The Kentucky Derby is a funny thing—this Saturday, women in hats and men in bow ties will be drinking bourbon and cheering on horses with names like McCraken (7/1), Gormley (16/1), Royal Mo (66/1) and Classic Empire (4/1) (not kidding). It’s a scene out of Great Gatsby or Harry Potter, decadent and bizarre. It begs the question …

What would you name your horse?

“Lady Justice,” said Trish Gibson, because eventually she does prevail!

“Against All Odds,” Eva Hamilton, “because apparently you can win that way.”

“Paulinaka” said Paulina Smith, “Because why not name a horse after myself, people do that with boats.” Excellent point.

“Blazing Saddles,” said Alicia Farrer, “because that movie is hilarious!” And an oddly appropriate horse name if it wins.

“Depending on the gender, Flapper Girl or Douchebag,” said Meggie Seigert. “Because the world clearly needs more Flapper Girls and because Douchebags have a quite tiring effect on the creatures close to them, so my horse would totally win.”

KEEPING IT CLEAN

Jamie Duncan picks up Key West HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

E

very day at 4 a.m., Waste Management’s fleet hits the streets, making Keys life a little cleaner and safer, thanks to men like Jamie Duncan. A born and bred Conch, Duncan loves being a garbage man. This is his town and he is going to take care of it. With a broad smile and inviting laugh, Duncan is not afraid to show his affection for his customers, always one to help out with cans or lend an ear.

Showered with cold sodas and a Christmas card or two, it’s clear his positive attitude is infectious.

Duncan sees men come and go from the job, but he’s a company man at the helm of his truck and has no plans to do otherwise. His reward? Picking up his three boys, Devin, Nathaniel, and Marcus, every day after school and helping make their world a better place.

How long have you worked for Waste Management? What do you do? 14 years now, and I have done a little bit of everything from washing trucks to now driving my own mini truck down the lanes.

“I just love my job, I wouldn’t be where I was at without my job.”

Best part of the job? Talking to the older customers and checking in on them. I help them out with their cans and get to know them. And driving past schools with the little kids shouting “Stop!” when they see the trucks.

Worst? The heat — not really the smell, you get used to that, but then again, my smell is a little off.

What’s the most unusual thing you have found? A possum; it was alive in the can at the golf course. We let them take care of that.

Has anyone ever offered you a bribe? I never refuse a cold soda.

Is it the Sopranos? Is there a garbage mafia? No, not here — but you never know about other places.

Do you have a favorite street or area?

I have different routes for different days, but I love Tuesdays; those customers make my day.

Biggest pet peeve ? When people don’t tie their bags—the tipper can shake the garbage out all over the place. (Tie your bags people!)

Here is your chance to tell residents a piece of advice; what is it? Put out your garbage the night before; they may think they know when the garbage man is coming, but it can change. Also, everyone can eliminate a lot of trash by recycling.

And parents, sorry, most toys are NOT recyclable.

What have you learned about Key West doing your job? I see people just pick the trash off the street, so they know it’s our island and we need to take care of it. It’s good.

Worst events to clean up after? Both Fantasy Fest and New Years; both are awful.

What’s a secret a garbage man will never tell you? You can learn a lot about how a person lives through their garbage.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Politics puts Keys at risk It’s now apparent, unreservedly, that our southern environmentalecosystem region, which includes: the Gulf of Mexico and coasts, Atlantic seaboard, South Florida economic region and Everglades, and the U.S. Out Islands of the Florida Keys are under dire threat from one who should be protecting, not putting at greater risk, this vast system of world-dependent resources.

Recognizing his ignorance of the outside real world, compounded by the special interest desires of his administration which have a COMPLETE disregard for the environment, it now becomes the responsibility of those who agree, this should be our Concord Bridge!

“We are opening it up (to drilling),” said Trump, while signing an executive order. These reckless unthought-out actions, by someone who thinks oil comes out of the ground in cans, are so loud, I can’t hear a word his defenders and justifiers are saying. Today I opened the Miami Herald and read: “Trump targets marine sanctuaries in Florida and elsewhere for possible oil drilling.”

That the president would move to allow oil drilling closer to, if not within, Florida and Atlantic coast state waters is unnecessary and a slap in the face to even many who voted for him because they didn’t have a choice. What does he (you) not understand about both the negative environmental and economic risk for greater production of an already oversupply of this commodity? It was seven years ago this month - the Macondo Deepwater Horizon, negligently managed by BP, blew out of control and killed 11 people and destroyed elements of the Florida economy and four other states for years.

Florida’s economy is dying a death of these insidious thousand cuts!

Mosquito Control receives Zika funding Florida Keys Mosquito Control District received additional funding from the Florida Department of Health to assist in Aedes aegypti control efforts. The Florida Department of Health will reimburse up to $145,724 for Aedes aegypti control measures through June of 2017. Reimbursable items are limited to operational costs and will include aerial liquid larvicide product, personnel costs, equipment purchases, and the purchase of traps used for surveillance. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes can carry many diseases such as Zika, dengue and chikungunya. Remember to dump standing water.

Green Parrot hosts Drink and Draw The Green Parrot will host “Drink and Draw” on the first Tuesday of each month – the next is on June 6 – from 8 to 10 p.m. The first guest host will be local artist Tony Gregory. Bring a sketchbook, pens, and paper, or they can be provided. More experienced artists can bring their own materials.

Drink & Draw is not a class, and there is no fee. It is a low-key, drop-in social workshop devoted to drawing practices.

AVIS COLLINS ROBINSON WORKS ON DISPLAY IN KEY WEST

N

ew paintings and quilts from Avis Collins Robinson portray, both directly and metaphorically, the richness of African American life and the deep, layered meanings of a simple word: soul.

“The Fabric of Soul” is on exhibit through May 25 in the Sanger Gallery of The Studios of Key West.

In “The Souls of Black Folk,” one of the most important American books of the 20th Century, W.E.B. Du Bois used the concept of “soul” to convey the universal nature of the human struggle – joys and sorrows, the satisfaction of accomplishment, the comfort of family and the persistent resonance of history.

Robinson’s portraits are more than beautifully rendered likenesses; they invite the viewer to look into her subjects’ souls and experience our common humanity.

Her quilts, too, are imbued not just with striking color and form but also with history and emotion. She uses fabric to tell stories of freedom and funk, of

spirit and solidarity. Using the rich traditions of African American quilt making as a foundation, she has developed a new visual language – sometimes with deceptive simplicity masking great complexity, sometimes so jam-packed with energy that the pieces of fabric almost seem to be in motion, always overflowing with soul.

Robinson recenty was selected as an artist into the prestigious Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies; as part of the program, one of her quilts was prominently installed at the United Nations building in New York.

The exhibition includes more than 30 paintings and textiles, as well as artifacts — such as an original Eli Whitney cotton gin made in the late 1700s, slave documents, and a segregated water fountain from Washington, D.C. Also showing, in the XOJ Gallery, is studio artist Mark Hedden presenting “Nocturnal: Key West at Night.”

LONG LIVE THE CONCH REPUBLIC Down and Dirty at the Bloody Battle

Well, I was pretty beat up.

After an hour of being pounded with water hoses and pegged with stale Cuban bread with the Conch Republic Royal Air Force planes flying over, dropping

toilet paper bombs on the boats in the harbor, I was exhausted, and a mess.

And, it was amazing!

As part of my royal duty as the Queen of the Conch Republic — which I took very, very seriously — my biggest obligation (and of course, one of the things I was most excited about) was to accompany the Schooner Hindu into the battle against the U.S. Coast Guard. The royal family Chaplain Terri Hill and the Feudal Baron Stephen Ferguson joined the crazy expedition.

With mostly Conch Republic visitors onboard, I am pretty sure there was at least one guy who thought I was like “actually” the “real” queen. “I will fight with my people,” I told them as I put away the trash bag I was going to use to cover my jeans and shirt.

Apparently, a trash bag makes you a bigger target, unlike, you know, the crown on my head …

The cannons shot from shore as the battle began and my hair tightly wrapped around the crown in the wind. My sunglasses shot across the deck of the Hindu while being blasted by water hoses from the Coast Guard Cutter Charles David Jr., as I waved to

my buddies the Gerardots and the Paynes onboard the ship.

Then, the Cuban bread missiles came flying in from their upperdeck, more convenient, position.

So much bread.

Going into my first-ever battle, I didn’t realize the sopping wet dough balls stale Cuban bread turns into after it’s hurtled from boat to boat across soaking wet decks. It’s gross, and dries like concrete, but makes for more accurate aim with the water weight.

To the guy I accidently pegged with said dough ball, right in his, ahem, dough balls, I am soooo sorry (but that was the most epically aimed piece of war tool I’ve ever used and I saw how impressed you were with my immaculate aim as you pointed to me halfway bent over in pain but in awe of my awesome arm).

Until next year, long live the Conch Republic, long live Key West, long live fundraisers for Wesley House Family Services, and long live these traditions that make this wonderful, unique place the most amazing place in the world to live.

Mallory Square is packed with spectators, but the real action happens shipside.

Royalty onboard Schooner Hindu includes the dough-ed up Royal Chaplain Terri Hill, Royal Feudal Baron Stephen Ferguson, Royal Cousin to Ferguson Suz Tread, and me, the Queen ;)

Stephen Ferguson is a genius.

He runs for Feudal Baron each year to raise money for Wesley House Family Services as he can’t run for king. (The late Mel Fisher is always hailed as King since he started the fundraiser 20-something years ago.)

Ferguson’s royal status allows him to be in charge of the land if the King is not present – making Ferguson, basically, the acting King. Touché, Baron. Now off with your head.

THE ‘PLAID’ CURTAIN

The Waterfront Playhouse will close its 2016-17 season with the musical hit “Forever Plaid,” by Stuart Ross, the tribute to “guy groups” that were popular in the 1950s when male quartets would melt hearts with close harmonies and engaging personalities.

The Wall Street Journal called the show “laugh-out loud fun.”

“Forever Plaid” begins on a stormy night in the early 1960s, when four eager singers known as The Plaids meet their untimely ends in a cherry red 1954 Mercury on the way to their first big gig. Now in 2017, this quartet of comic crooners gets one last chance to return from the afterlife to do the show they never got to perform. The four lads deliver comic patter and the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950s, including “Three Coins in the Fountain,” “Gotta Be This or That,” and “Moments to Remember.”

“Forever Plaid” is one of the most popular titles in the musical theater canon, having been performed all over the world, including in 1997 at the Waterfront. Artistic director Danny Weathers felt it was time to bring back the Plaids in all their goofy glory. my moved to Key West two and a half years ago after spending every summer in town with her dad for lobster mini season, and then almost every weekend in town while she was at college at Florida Atlantic University.

She’s been at Tattoos and Scars since August.

“I love who I work with, I love the locals, and I love my bosses,” she said while making drinks at a recent Florida Keys SPCA event held at the bar. “It’s a low-key locals place, filled with friends.”

She said the popular drinks right now are anything Deep Eddy vodka-flavored.

“Probably grapefruit and orange are the two most popular,” she said. “Add some Sprite to the orange flavor Deep Eddy and it’s pretty spot on to an Orange Crush.”

When she isn’t bartending, she’s on the boat or doing whatever she can on the water. “Fishing, Snipes, paddleboarding,” she said, “that’s what I love.”

Tattoos and Scars, at 512 Greene St., is open from 11 a.m. to 4 a.m. daily.

The floors are covered in complementary peanut shells from the buckets of dry roasted peanuts that are handed out to the guests.

“Please throw the shells on the floor,” she said. “It’s part of our ambience.”

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you?

I have been on the Conchettes all four years of high school. The team has made me a more confident person and a better leader. My practices allow me to relax and enjoy dancing alongside my close friends. I am also a part of the Key West High School Dance Marathon Team. We partnered with University of Florida to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and it feels great to give to such a worthy cause. I also participate in Executive Board, Mu Alpha Theta, Zonta, Operation Support, National Honor Society and CSALT. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why?

My biggest inspiration at KWHS has been my dad because he has always pushed me to reach my goals and taught me that I can achieve so much through hard work. I can always rely on him to keep me on track.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why?

I think that the class that has best prepared me was my Comp II class.

In this class, I researched and gained knowledge about things I would have never known. I also feel like it furthered my writing technique and being able to effectively communicate, which are both important life skills to have as an adult.

What is your favorite social medium and why? Who do you follow?

My favorite social medium is definitely Instagram. It’s a great way to allow others to see into your everyday life. I mostly follow friends, celebrities, and fashion accounts. I love keeping up with the newest trends and seeing what the movie stars are up to.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges?

I would say the biggest challenge facing the Keys is our isolation from resources, but at the same time, that is what makes us such a special place. It’s hard here sometimes because unlike big cities, not everything is at our fingertips but it’s what keeps us unique.

W

riting their name for the first time, hundreds of Key West children have proudly looked up and smiled at one woman, Mrs. Sidney Jones. And Mrs. Jones, for almost 30 years, has championed and cherished those first moments, first true accomplishments, with joy and ceaseless admiration for the never-ending fortitude of the young mind. It’s her job; she’s a teacher.

And what a wonderful job she has done, teaching generations of families at St. Mary’s Basilica School in her hometown. A fifth generation Conch, Mrs. Jones originally started at May Sands Exceptional Child Center helping with special education, but after having her own children, found herself back at The Basilica School, her alma mater.

“I know in my heart, you have a niche where you belong,” said Mrs. Jones, referring to her many years with Pre-K. Now teaching the next generation of children of former students, Mrs. Jones reflects, “Sometimes I think I have been here too long, but in a lot of ways, it is so great when people remember me. It means I have made an impression.”

Her advice to any new teacher: understand that children come from all situations and practice patience, patience, patience. But Mrs. Jones’s success also comes from her good nature. When an entire classroom of happy toddlers misunderstood and believed the Pope was coming to St. Mary’s, not Miami, they naturally told their parents. It was difficult to correct the children. Why? Mrs. Jones said it, so of course it was true.

Next year will be her 30th year teaching. Years filled with first ABC’s, Christmas crafts and friends may come to an end, but Mrs. Jones said, “I really don’t see myself just sitting at home.” Watching the Basilica School grow yearly and kids changing habits with more technology, doesn’t deter Mrs. Jones, but she may step back.

It will be sad to see her go but for hundreds of students, she has left a lot to remember.

RUNNING WITH THE BAND Sister Hazel to run 100 relay and perform HAYS BLINCKMANN

t was no small endeavor for drummer Mark Trojanowski to persuade his fellow Sister Hazel band members to run 100 miles with him. But the band has stood the test of musical time and will also rise to the challenge of not only running the Keys100 Ultramarathon relay together but performing a concert the next day at the Waterfront Brewery on Sunday, May 21. Sister Hazel, best known for popular hits such as “All for You” and “Change Your Mind,” continues to tour after 23 years and create great music all the while giving back to the community.

“Expect a tired band,” Trojanowski laughed. “Since I had to convince the guys – took nearly two months – I get to run the most, 22 miles with the 7 Mile bridge included. Hope it’s not too hot.” Again, Trojanowski chuckled, knowing the weather in the Keys.

strangers to Key West, often here to play a concert, hit the songwriter’s festival or just vacation. But all of them will do anything, even run 100 miles, for charity, especially for The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. The band is named after an actual nun and the boys have taken that to heart. Team Hazelnut, as they refer to themselves, have continually supported lead singer Ken Block’s charity for cancer research and patient care called Lyrics for Life. Block lost his brother Jeffrey to cancer.

his is one of those crazy, jaw-dropping, page-turning stories that can make a reader whisper an expletive by page 3. Key West resident Dan “Tito” Davis and Peter Conti, Hollywood screenwriter, wrote a helluva story about Tito’s life drug trafficking and running from the FBI for 13 years. “Gringo: My Life as an International Fugitive” is now available on Amazon , and #3 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases for Law Enforcement Biography, with good reason.

“I blew the country with just a fake driver’s license,” Tito said.

He disappeared from the Feds in 1994 while out on bail for a crime he didn’t commit, although he was committing other crimes.

Dan Davis then became Tito the “Gringo” in Mexico, starting an epic odyssey through slums and jungles all the way to country clubs of South America. “You never wanted to bring the heat, but there were a lot of close calls.

I took being on the run seriously; I didn’t want to be drunk or high.”

Tito has complete clarity of all his ordeals making his recall undiluted.

It ended in 2007, when he was captured by Venezuelan mercenaries and returned to the U.S. government. Unbelievably, the whole journey was thanks to a lying high school buddy and a pissed-off divorcée. After 10 years in an American jail, Tito is living and writing as a free man in Key West. Enjoying his Conch life, Tito smiles, “Now I play a lot of pickleball, ride my bike and I’m a book pimp.”

“I know a lot of wise guys and people of color who are in the drug game but I had never met a midwestern white dude who was in so deep. And I could see that he was smart,” said author Peter Conti, who won over Tito to help him tell his story. Conti also notes, “I cannot see how this won’t be a film or a limited run TV series.

I’ve been in contact with several people but I’m not rushing into anything.” (Brad Pitt is one of those “people.”)

STAMP OUT HUNGER On Saturday, May 13, local letter carriers are asking for Key West’s help to “Stamp Out Hunger.” The National Association of Letter Carriers sponsors the nationwide food drive and the local branch uses it to make a major impact on the supply of food in food pantries in Key West. Postal carriers are urging the community to help feed those in need by – on that Saturday – leaving non-perishable food items by their mailboxes for the local letter carrier to collect. Food donations will stay in the community, distributed to benefit the food banks at Metropolitan Community Church, Glad Tidings Church, Catholic Charities and St. Mary’s Church.

This is the 25th year for the national event, which last year collected 82 million pounds of donations across the nation. CONTRIBUTED

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center - Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager The Domestic Abuse Shelter (DAS), a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, has an opening for a full-time Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager. Candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. Responsibilities include the day to day supervision and management of DAS residential facilities. The Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager possesses at minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence, or high school/equivalency and four years providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence. Two years of successful supervisory experience in a domestic violence and/or sexual assault agency is required. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups, proven experience training staff, and excellent organizational skills.
