Around the globe, May 4 is celebrated as Star Wars Day. Thanks in large part to a play on words (May the Fourth/May the Force…), the day has become part of the films’ continuing legacy. In fact, one of the first references to the iconic line dates back to May 4, 1979, following the election of Britain’s first woman prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. After her historic win, her party ran a congratulatory ad in the London Evening News, reading “May the Fourth be with you, Maggie.

Congratulations.” So in anticipation of May 4, and the franchise’s next movie “The Last Jedi,” the Weekly asked locals…

Which Star Wars movie is your favorite, and why? “‘The Force Awakens.’ I saw the other ones but this one was easier to keep up with. It was nice that they made a new one,” said Brianna Acevedo, of Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill. Acevedo’s father is, ironically enough, named Jedi. The force is strong with this one.

Christian Cardoso, also of the Big Chill, said, “‘Rogue One,’ because the cliffhanger at the end was pretty well done with how they depicted Luke and foreshadowed.”

Jorge Rodriquez, of Lockout Specialist Locksmith, said, “‘A New Hope.’ It caught my attention so much that I went to the theater to see it when it first came out. It came out in a period where people didn’t believe in aliens or talk much about them, so it was new to see a movie showcase them and speak freely about foreign life.”

“The first one, ‘A New Hope.’ In my youth I had always been a bit of a science fiction fan. When I saw the computer generated graphics, they were amazing to me at the time,” said diving captain Capt. Kermit.

Marta Rivera of Sunrise Café in Tavernier said, “‘The Force Awakens.’ I didn’t see the preview going into the movie and it completely surprised me. It was the first Star Wars movie I’ve seen.”

42 affordable housing units added

N

early four years after planning began, Paradise Point Senior Living Community in Key Largo celebrated its grand opening – adding 42 more affordable housing units to Monroe County.

With a price tag of $12.9 million, Paradise Point apartments are the only rent-restricted housing for low-income seniors outside of Key West.

Gorman & Associates’ Florida market president, Hana Eskra, noted that nearly half the residents at Paradise Point are part of the Florida Keys workforce.

U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, Monroe County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy and Monroe County Housing Authority’s Manuel Castillo also addressed guests at the opening. Murphy and Castillo explained the role that federal affordable-housing tax credits played in opening Paradise Point and stressed the need for continuing public-private partnerships.

Curbelo said he looks forward to working with Naval Air Station Key West to expand the number of affordable housing units in Monroe County even more. Curbelo met with the Assistant Secretary of the Navy Steven Iselin and other Navy officials on March 7.

STAN ZUBA GABRIEL SANCHEZ

E

lected last fall to the Monroe County Mosquito Control Board after he asked voters to place a physician on the board, Stan Zuba was the only Democrat in Monroe County to taste victory that evening. The pediatric physician had worked hard to campaign on his extensive record, which included president of Mariners Hospital medical staff and director of inpatient pediatrics in Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He said he’s learned a lot in his time on the mosquito control board, and attributes much of the success to county employees who work diligently behind the scenes.

What’s the best part of working with kids and medicine?

Kids are fun and keep me young at heart! Also despite how grave their prognosis may be, there is always a chance they will survive despite the odds - just because they are kids.

What’s your favorite childhood memory of Long Island?

Surf fishing every fall for bluefish and striped bass off the beaches of the North Shore.

Growing up with two industrious parents can teach a lot. What characteristics of your work ethic can you attribute to your parents?

Hard work and dedication do pay off.

My parents grew up poor during the Depression. In 1964 they borrowed $10,000 from a relative and bought a mom-and-pop hardware store. They only had $75 left in their pockets.

Twenty years later they were able to send me to medical school without having to take out a loan.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

Designing, writing the curriculum for, and implementing a state-of-the-art pediatric residency training program at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago – one of only two programs approved that year in the entire country.

How did you get to the Keys?

Unbelievably, through an internet ad from Baptist Health looking to hire a pediatrician for a new outpatient clinic located in Key Largo in 1997.

Cooking is one of your favorite pastimes; what would you say are some of your best dishes?

Zuppa De Mussels (mussels in Marinara sauce) and crabmeat stuffed lobster.

What’s the last book you read?

“The Art of Happiness” by the Dalai Lama.

Would you rather have tickets to see the New York Rangers play in the Stanley Cup finals or New York Yankees in the World Series and why?

That’s tough! The Yankees, because I spent many days of my youth at the original Yankee Stadium.

Who were some of your childhood heroes?

My mom and dad for sure. Also Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino from the golfing world.

What is your all-time favorite vacation destination?

Hands down – Thailand. A beautiful country with great food and kind and loving people.

If you could have studied another discipline, what would it have been?

Becoming a fishing boat captain.

Truthfully, I was going to make it into medicine or I was going to fish professionally.

If you could have lunch with one historical figure, whom would it be?

Martin Luther King Jr. What is your preferred movie or television genre?

Horror films or action dramas.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned in your time on the Mosquito Control Board?

How extremely technical the science of mosquito control is, and how passionate the mosquito control district leadership and staff are about protecting our citizens. They are truly the unsung heroes of the Florida Keys!

Who has been your strongest supporter throughout the years?

That’s easy, Eric Anderson, my life partner of 32 years.

Hurricane season around the corner

Monroe County Emergency Management Director Marty Senterfitt speaks with Jeff Tavss, executive producer at WPLG Local 10, and chief photographer William Damas, for the TV station’s upcoming special on hurricane season. M

arissa Sardar says her favorite part of being a DJ is the moment she sees everyone on the dance floor let loose.

“That’s when you can really have some fun,” laughed Sardar.

Sardar graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in communications, then landed her first internship at Miami’s WPOW Power 96 as an on-air DJ. She moved on to produce and broadcast traffic reports for Clear Channel radio. In between reports she would practice in the upstairs studio.

She liked her job, but really wanted to mix music live.

When a friend asked her to DJ their wedding, she agreed, and things went really well. Soon after, she started getting calls to DJ various events and, eventually, Morada Bay’s full moon parties.

Sardar has been performing for four years – publicly for two – and has polished her style of tropical house music. She said some of her influences are electronic music’s big beat genre, and artists like Girl Talk, and Australian DJ KILTR. Her brand of tropical house is feel-good, chill and, as she described it, “classic hits with a hint of lime.”

At the full moon parties, she tries to keep people on their toes - sometimes mixing in older songs or mixing and matching songs most wouldn’t expect to hear together. Sardar’s musical palate includes old school hits from Prince, KISS, Michael Jackson, and Tom Petty mixed with the likes of modern day names like The Weeknd, Justin Timberlake, Zayn Malik, Calvin Harris, Rihanna, and other pop and hip hop giants.

DJ Sardar is set to DJ in the Philippines next January for the Plus.Six.Three. Festival in Cebu.

Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill

B

artender Bruce Herpich knows all about happy endings. He makes 20 of them a day. Herpich said Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill is known for its tropical libation the Happy Ending, made with key lime rum, key lime liqueur, crème de cocoa, pineapple and orange juice with graham cracker bits; bits that Herpich stores in a specific container labeled “straight up g crackers.” It’s that serious … or, seriously delicious more like. It’s his go-to recommendation.

When he’s on the other side of the bar, Herpich enjoys his Jack Daniels and IPAs – especially those from Florida Keys Brewing Co. Herpich said his typical bar crawl usually starts at the Big Chill, then Cactus Jacks, and finally Caribbean Club, in a journey he’s dubbed the Beermuda triangle.

Herpich not only knows his drinks, he’s got a knack for cooking, too.

“My favorite part of living here is going out on the water, catching something fresh, and going home and cooking it,” said Herpich.

When he finally takes time off, he loves to travel with his wife, Tanya, who he says is also his best friend.

RELAY FOR LIFE Community unites in fight

t one o’clock sharp, survivors of cancer continued to show their resilience as they stepped off on the first lap of the Upper Keys 2017 Relay for Life. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the annual fundraiser’s course was beachside at Founders Park. Four giant letters spelling “HOPE” were set up next to the course, serving as a powerful message. The theme of the relay was a beach luau, complete with Polynesian tunes, hula dancing and cookout. At night a luminaria ceremony was held to remember those lost to cancer, honor the survivors and supporters and bring hope to those still affected.

f you’re not southern, seersucker may be a foreign word to you. But since we’re officially in seersucker season with the Kentucky Derby commencing on May 6 and many hot and humid months ahead, Seersucker is a fabric to get familiar with.

Seersucker is made of linen, cotton, silk or synthetic fibers woven on twin-beam looms that give it a textured striped look. The reason for the fabric’s popularity is that it’s lightweight and breathable, keeping the wearer cool in warm climates. Also, the puckered look of the fabric means it can be worn straight out of the laundry with no ironing required.

The traditional seersucker fabric is blue and white and was used primarily for men’s suits. Today you will find the fabric used for shorts, pants, shirts, skirts and dresses in a variety of pastel colors.

The fabric came to the U.S. from England after being discovered in the 1600s in India. The name stems from the Persian word for “milk and sugar,” likely comparing the smooth and rough stripes of the fabric to the smooth and rough texture of milk and sugar.

The fabric didn’t start as the preppy man’s summer suit. It was worn primarily by employees of gasoline companies, butchers and train engineers and railroad workers – which is where the term “railroad stripes” originated. Likewise, hospital volunteers wore uniforms made of a red and white seersucker fabric, giving them the name “candy stripers” because of the similarities of the uniform and a candy cane.

It wasn’t until after the 1920s that the fabric gained popularity with preppy undergraduates and Southern professional men. Southerners

needed a lightweight fabric for summer that would withstand the heat and humidity and keep them looking proper. lantation Key School’s PTA took a gnarly trip back in time to an ’80s prom, for this year’s Keys Gone fundraiser to benefit underresourced enrichment programs. The Tavernier Elks Lodge hosted the dance, the organization’s most totally awesome fundraiser of the year, and its largest. Big hair, neon, tight leather, cone bras, ’80s crime drama stars, you name it – it was there. Throughout the night prom-goers had a chance to bid on prizes and gift packages via a silent auction. The ’80s weren’t that long ago. So take a chill pill: it’s totally apparent the spirit of those times is alive and well in the PTA’s dance moves.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you?

I play three sports, football, soccer, and baseball. They are very important to me because I would like to pursue a professional career in one of those. It’s also important to me because I want to represent this school with pride.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why?

Overall, there has not been one specific class that has prepared me for life after high school. Just taking the higher level classes that I’m taking has made me realize that the real world will be much harder than anyone can anticipate.

Snapchat. My favorite filter was the helicopter hat one, but they don’t have it any more.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges?

A major challenge in the Keys is that the coral reefs are being contaminated. With more people coming in, it will only make it worse. Over the summer, I am helping Keys Life magazine with a big sandbar cleanup that will certainly help.

What are your plans after high school?

I definitely plan to attend a four-year university after high school. With that, I would like to play either baseball or soccer at that university.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not?

I will not permanently make the Keys my home. This is because the area is too small and the cost to live here is very expensive. Plus a change of scenery is nice, too.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center - Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager The Domestic Abuse Shelter (DAS), a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, has an opening for a full-time Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager. Candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. Responsibilities include the day to day supervision and management of DAS residential facilities. The Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager possesses at minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence, or high school/equivalency and four years providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence. Two years of successful supervisory experience in a domestic violence and/or sexual assault agency is required. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups, proven experience training staff, and excellent organizational skills.
