It’s over. For the past 12 weeks, 90 Marathon residents have engaged in a community weight loss program known as Marathon Meltdown. The group went from weighing 20,226 pounds to 18,737 pounds; the island is lighter by 1,489 pounds! The contest culminated in an awards party on Wednesday night at Florida Keys Country Club. Affordable housing guru puts himself on the line Mothner gets OK for developing ‘my backyard’ SARA MATTHIS

M

arathon’s Josh Mothner is a Realtor by trade, but his passion and expertise are all about affordable housing. From 2002 to 2006 he was a board member on the Middle Keys Land Trust (both as treasurer and president). From 20032004, he served on Marathon’s affordable task force and again in 2015 when it reformed; at that point he served as chairman. He also worked with county officials on the issue some years ago.

So, when the lot directly behind his home in Marathon went up for sale, he decided to put everything he’s learned (and every “shekel” he has) into building four more units.

“Why? Well, it’s literally in my backyard,” said Mothner.

On Tuesday, the City of Marathon approved both his conditional use and developer’s agreement. The council members, who know Mothner well, were clear that they will hold him to

The property comes with one affordable building right (he sold off the market rate and replaced it). He has earned two more through the city’s lottery program, and has asked to “borrow” one from the next lottery.

Plans call for four 1,000-squarefoot homes on the lot and to preserve as many of the mature trees as possible. Is it possible to squeeze three bedrooms into a small home? “I don’t know. I have to look at it, but it’s real affordable housing,” he said. “The designs are being drawn up right now.”

In other news: • Marathon City Councilman Steve Cook wants to readdress the city’s ordinances regarding food trucks.

“The ordinance we have now is pitted against them,” he said, mentioning that only two currently operate in Marathon. Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron supports the idea. She said, “I’m glad we are having this discussion. We need to expand business, not prohibit it.”

The council directed staff to organize some workshops with existing “brick and mortar” restaurant owners and other stakeholders to discuss broad topics before debating the details such as permitting, hours and garbage removal.

• The council approved a conditional use permit for Tranquility Bay Adult Daycare to operate in the space formerly occupied by Mattress & Beyond across from Walgreen’s at 108th Street.

• The council voted 4-1 to deny a request to build nine workforce housing units and six market homes at 250 Gulf Terrace (at the west end of the airport runway) by GEM Homes. The council cited concerns about additional traffic at the intersection of U.S.1 and Aviation Boulevard and access for a nearby homeowner. The council also noted the applicant does not have any permits in place, although the applicant said he needed approval from the city before the county would grant interlocal permits from its lottery pool.

Effort joins others across country, world

M

ore than 40 scientists and supporters gathered on April 22 to join marches around the country and the world in support of science. The march was organized as a grass-roots idea via social media and echoed others over concerns that politicians are ignoring science in making decisions. Participants marched across the No Name Key bridge, carrying signs emphasizing the value of science and the role it plays in protecting the environment generally, and specifically referring to the Keys – with signs like the one proclaiming “Science saved our Key Deer” and “Sea level is rising and so are we.”

The walls of the upstairs lounge, My New Joint, are filled with interesting fishing-inspired artwork. Mostly the creations of the talented artist Derek DeYoung, it was only fitting the outside wall would add to his list of accomplishments.

Owner Lynn Bell couldn’t be happier with the new mural. “Big shout out to Derek DeYoung for bringing his talents to my front wall space,” she said. “With the help of Janell DeYoung and Rob Kramarz, the job came out spectacular.”

“Derek’s art directly reflects his joy and enthusiasm for fishing and the outdoors. He studies his subject matter and gets inspired when he is in nature,” said Janell DeYoung, Derek’s wife.

12-WEEK COMMUNITY WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE COMES TO AN END t’s the Weekly’s honor to conduct the annual weight loss challenge with the help of Liz and Chris Kuck from Keys Strength and Community. Really. Every year I am amazed by the spirit of community and competitiveness and fun the contestants of the Marathon Meltdown put up on the scale every week.

This year, we had 90 contestants and 18 team sponsors. (Herbie’s Bar & Chowder House sponsored two teams!) Some of the sponsors were helping out business partners or employees, others had nothing but good will in their heart.

Amazingly, this crowd lost about 1,400 pounds.

That’s the equivalent of four panda bears, or the heart of one blue whale, or an average size cow. Wow! The awards ceremony was held Wednesday at the Florida Keys Country Club and the prizes and winners were revealed. Here are some more fun facts:

SHOWING UP MATTERS In 2017, the Marathon Meltdown challenged added another element — community workouts. We met four times over the course of three months to sweat together. We visited the fitness trail behind City Hall once, rode our bikes around the airport, and met for an amazing beach workout lead by Chris and Liz Kuck of Keys Strength and Conditioning in the sand. The contestants were awarded points for attending, and half-points if they brought along friends and family.

(Studies show success rates improve when you make it fun and communal). The Top Participation team goes to Flowers by J&J.

There’s something to be said about teachers. They read the rules and understand them.

They show up on time. They are organized. The three teams from Stanley Switlik Elementary lost a combined 202 pounds.

CAMPS OFFER SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE The school year is winding down and summer looms on the horizon. From art to sailing to sports, plenty of activities await for June through August. Here is information to help parents and kids come up with a summer plan.

BOOT KEY SAILING CAMP Four, two-week sailing sessions in Marathon’s Boot Key Harbor June 12-23, June 26-July 8 (no class on July 4, makeup following Saturday), July 10-21 and July 24-Aug. 6. • 9 a.m. to noon for 5- to 8-year olds and 1 to 4 p.m. for ages 9- to 18-years old.

• $100/session • Each session will consist of 10 classes teaching children the basics of sailing on a variety of small craft. Each student must bring a fitted Coast Guardapproved lifejacket and pass a swim test. • For details, call 707-849-0072.

‘Bathroom Humor’ next week at MCT

H

ere is truth in labeling: “Bathroom Humor,” the final mainstage production of the season for Marathon Community Theatre, takes place entirely in the bathroom of a swanky home during an office party.

Everyone feels obligated to attend the party, though most would rather not be there, and the place to escape the drunks and dumb games is the bathroom. All the latest gossip — about co-workers and spouses, not-sosecret affairs and wardrobe malfunctions — is discussed. There’s even a down-on-his-luck Elvis impersonator.

“Bathroom Humor” was written by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore, also the authors of “Love, Sex and the I.R.S.” The show opens at Marathon Community Theatre on Thursday, May 4 and runs through May 21 on Thursday to Saturday nights with a special matinee on Sunday, May 21. Showtime is at 8 p.m. and the matinee begins at 3 p.m.

The show stars Jessica Young, Trish Hintze, Nancy Smith, John Schaefer, Sean Sayer, Jimmy Dean, Jerry Nussenblatt and Neil Angiulo. It’s directed by Jim “Boomer” Kelly and Dale Colburn.

It’s an ensemble show, with everyone sharing about equal stage time. But theater-goers won’t forget the role played by Sayer.

“It’s Stu ‘The Stoner,’” said Kelly.

“If you couple the DNA of ‘Cheech and Chong,’ ‘Dazed and Confused,’ and ‘That 70’s Show,’ you will get that character.”

Kelly said he stumbled across the play while searching for a script to use during a special workshop for directors two years ago. He said it took some convincing to get the higher ups to agree to stage ‘Bathroom Humor.’

“There’s no nudity and no potty humor, but it’s fairly racy — a little cursing, some sexual innuendo and talk about drugs. It’s a house party.

And you never know what goes on in the bathroom at a house party unless you’re in it.”

Those in the audience might never look at a bathtub, guacamole dip or plant food in the same light. And watch for John Schaefer (Arthur), who plays the role of boss, to have a memorable scene.

“Arthur makes an interesting exit.

For that matter, it’s an interesting entrance too,” said Kelly.

The soundtrack includes hits from Tom Jones, Wham!, AC/DC, and The Grateful Dead.

The experts at Freddie Mac have put together a guide with some top terms you’ll hear: • Pre-approval letter. A letter from your lender telling you how much home you can afford and the maximum amount you are qualified to borrow. Having a pre-approval letter while shopping can help you move faster, and with greater confidence, in competitive markets.

• Appraisal. After you make an offer on a home, your lender will order an appraisal to get a professional opinion on its value. This is a necessary step in getting financing secured, as it validates the worth to you and your lender.

• Closing costs. In addition to a home’s price, a buyer must pay “closing costs.” This is the cost to complete the real estate transaction. This includes points, taxes, title insurance, financing costs, items that must be prepaid or escrowed and other costs.

Closing costs are generally 2 percent to 5 percent of your home purchase price.

• Escrow. The holding of money or documents by a neutral third party before closing. Escrow can also refer to an account held by the lender or servicer into which a homeowner pays taxes and insurance.

• Mortgage rate. The interest rate you pay to borrow money for your house. The lower, the better.

• Fixed-rate mortgages. A mort-

gage with an interest rate that doesn’t change during the term of the loan, typically 15 or 30 years.

• APR. The annual percentage rate is a broader measure of your cost for borrowing money and includes the interest rate, points, broker fees and other credit charges you’ll be required to pay. Because these costs are rolled in, the APR is usually higher than your interest rate.

• Credit score. A number ranging from 350 to 800 based on an analysis of your credit files. Your score plays a significant role when securing a mortgage, as it helps lenders determine the likelihood that you’ll repay future debts. The higher your score, the more options that may be available to you, including lower interest rates.

• Private mortgage insurance. If you make a down payment of less than 20 percent on your conventional loan, your lender will require this. It serves as an added insurance policy protecting the lender if you’re unable to pay your mortgage, and it can be canceled from your payment once you reach 20 percent equity in your home.

erver Miki has been making sangrias at Brutus Seafood for the past six months for her guests, and she loves everything about her job, the food, and the customers at the restaurant.

Her go-to drink of choice is the white sangria because it’s made with fresh seasonal fruits. Right now it’s paired with pineapples and peaches. The red sangria is paired with blackberries and raspberries.

She said the sangrias go best with the freshest seafood on the island and suggested the daily special on the menu of the whole fried yellowtail snapper. “As long as it came off the boat this morning, we have it on the special menu,” she said. “We have the freshest seafood and it makes it a pleasure to work here with such a quality menu.”

Hailing from Summerland Key, she’s been back in the Keys for the past six years after a stint in Virginia. When she isn’t working, she’s spending time with her six-yearold son, Luke, preferably at the beach and not messing with her dreaded hair (which she hasn’t cut in five years.) “I am about to cut it,” she said citing her 21-year-old twin sons who also have dreads. “It’s too hot and heavy and summer’s already here.”

THE TAO OF THE KEYS Taoist Tai Chi classes build strong bodies, minds

T

aoist Tai Chi has many moving parts; it’s part Eastern philosophy and part martial arts. Combined, they have a very wholesome effect.

“The 108 movements are designed to move every bone, every muscle, every tendon and every ligament in the human body,” said Jeff Pinkus, a volunteer Taoist Tai Chi instructor in Marathon. “But the benefits go beyond that.”

On Saturday morning, about 25 practitioners gathered in the parish hall of St. Columba Episcopal Church — each seeking unique and overlapping benefit and result. In the upcoming weeks, the group is having an open house and classes for beginners.

The Weekly had the chance to sit down and interview the Tai Chi practitioners and came away with the following points.

• It’s accessible. Anyone can do this; even being able to stand is not a requirement, as some sit in chairs and follow along due to a permanent or temporary incapacitation. Many of those in the Marathon class have had hip and knee replacements, suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, or have other aggravated conditions. Tai Chi is open to the very young and the very old and everyone in between.

• It’s healthy. “If Harvard University believes in it, I think we can say it’s pretty good for you,” said Pinkus, handing over an overview of the subject published by the university. Among the claims are better upper- and lower-body strength, aerobic conditioning, balance and flexibility. Pinkus said the exercises can also massage and re-align internal organs for better function. The practice can also have a healthy benefit for the spirit and mind. It requires focus and builds mental acuity. And its free-flowing form promotes mental peace.

“Tai Chi made my husband more patient and easy to live with (laughing). But there have been other benefits as well. Every year the doctor was telling me that I was losing bone density.

After a couple of years that stopped, and last year the doctor told me it was coming back.”

—Jean “I have issues with my heart and I’m 88 years old. I can’t even walk across the room with becoming short of breath. But, for some reason, I can do two hours of Tai Chi with no problem.”

—Sunny “I was a gym rat for years until I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I was sitting at home alone until I was invited to this class.

This has been the best experience of my life.”

—Karen “My husband and I live on a sailboat and we’re not young. We have issues with balance and I had a bad shoulder. It’s been a year since we’ve been coming to class, and we haven’t fallen off the boat yet!”

• It’s affordable. The entire Taoist Tai Chi organization’s goal is to make the practice as widely available as possible. The instructors volunteer their time. And students pay a nominal fee for small administration concerns like insurance.

• It promotes community and cultural exchange. Unlike other forms of exercise, even some martial arts, there is no competition in Tai Chi. Everyone is there to focus on his own progress and to support the progress of others in the class. Because the movements are a “universal language,” they often bridge the language and cultural gap for those traveling to workshops in other geographic regions. The same is true for the classes in the Keys. (There is another studio in Key Largo.) “We don’t discriminate based on economic class, age, or race,” said Pinkus. “The only thing that we ask is that you leave your ego at the door. But make sure to pick it up on the way out!” Beginners also have a chance to learn about Taoist Tai Chi founder Moy Lin-Shin, who emigrated to Canada from Hong Kong, and learn about Taoist principles.

“I had carpal tunnel surgery on one wrist and was afraid I was going to have to have it on the other as well. But Tai Chi offers great overall conditioning. I don’t have any symptoms because I am constantly working my arms and wrists and hands.”

—Mary “I’ve had two hip replacements and I wasn’t very sure of my balance when I started Tai Chi. I used to walk with a cane to keep upright. Now, I can go up ladders with no problem.”

—Phil “After a season of Tai Chi in Marathon, I looked for a group near my home in Virginia. I drive 45 minutes to practice Tai Chi in a botanical garden.

It’s worth it. I have a whole new community of Tai Chi friends.

We are on the same plane when it comes to health and supporting each other.”

—Vesta “I’ve always been a fit person, but I used to be a ‘no pain, no gain’ type of exerciser. This has really helped my flexibility. One day, I leaned over and I could touch the floor. Progress is slow, but it happens.”

—Anna “Since starting Tai Chi, I’ve grown half an inch!”

The Royal Family of the Conch Republic was recognized at the Royal Investitures last week.

ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF THE FORGOTTEN Chicago, Yes, Rush, ELO finally in; still too many out

M

adonna is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As far as I know, she has yet to produce a real rock record.

A pop star? One of the most successful ever. A rocker? Hardly.

Other non-rock inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame include Grandmaster Flash and Run-D.M.C. Rap and hip-hop pioneers, perhaps. Do they belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Some may argue they don’t.

What’s far more troubling than the Material Girl’s status as an inductee, however, is the absence of several real rock bands that really do belong in the Hall. These are some very surprising omissions, and I’ve been informed that these omissions may be intentional.

The Rock Hall has come a long way in finally inducting Chicago, Rush, Yes, and Electric Light Orchestra. These bands feature some of the most awesome musicians who ever graced a stage.

Their combined works have inspired many; the “progressive” label seemed to turn off the powers that be for far too long. Thankfully, some of these wrongs have been righted. Still, there are so many glaring oversights — and the Rock Hall has some ’splaining to do!

The Moody Blues – There’s absolutely no legitimate reason the band that gave us hit songs like “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon,” and “I’m Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band” (as well as more than 40 years of albums and touring) should be continually ignored by the Hall. They have been eligible for more than 27 years, and have had actual radio hits across several decades. Unfounded rumor has it that their ’80s hit, “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere,” was a reference to their missing induction invitation.

Induct them, already.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Each one of these people should be in the Hall individually for their talents. Yet they’re not. Classic albums like “Tarkus,” “Trilogy” and “Brain Salad Surgery” make ELP no-brainers for induction into the Hall of Fame. Yet no help for ELP — still not Lucky Men. C’est la vie. And with the passing of both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake last year, the Hall has missed a golden opportunity to recognize the band while they could still appreciate the honor.

Jethro Tull – “Aqualung.” “Minstrel in the Gallery.” “Too Old to Rock ‘n’ Roll: Too Young to Die!” “Songs From The Wood.” With 40-plus years of constant

recording and touring, Ian, Martin, and the boys have certainly earned the right to be inducted.

Unfortunately, the people in charge at the Hall are “Thick as a Brick.”

JOHN Tina Turner BARTUS – while she was is a City Council inducted with member and a her abusive thenformer Mayor of husband Ike, Tina’s the City of Marasolo career is Hallthon. John is also worthy as well. She a musician who performs around has been eligible for town at various 18 years. Speaking of belonging, Pat Benatar (“She Belongs to the Night,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”) isn’t in. Other acts not in the Hall include Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, The Smiths, Sonic Youth, Roxy Music, MC5, Radiohead, Judas Priest, The Cure, Todd Rundgren, T Rex, Big Star, King Crimson, Beck, The Cars, The Doobie Brothers, Warren Zevon, Procol Harum, Def Leppard, Bad Company, The Spinners, Little Feat, Dire Straits, War, The B-52s, Supertramp, Steppenwolf, Boston, The Guess Who, Three Dog Night, New York Dolls, Blue Oyster Cult, The Zombies, The Scorpions, Ben E. King, J. Geils Band, The Commodores, Thin Lizzie, Styx, Joe Cocker, Badfinger, Grand Funk Railroad, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, The Turtles, Tears for Fears, John Mayall, The Grass Roots, Billy Idol, Diana Ross, Iggy Pop, Herman’s Hermits, George Thorogood, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Sedaka, America, Harry Nilsson, Ten Years After, Phil Collins, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and so many more. These bands and artists are certainly part of the history of the wide spectrum of music that is rock, and probably belong in the Hall at least as much as Run D.M.C. The people at the Hall need to have their heads examined and their ears cleaned out. And maybe they should get out of Cleveland once in a while and listen to the wide variety of music that is rock and roll.
