Camps abound up and down the Keys — see pages 26-27 — but as the old saying goes ... Do we ever really listen to our children? Of course parents are happy their precious kinder are learning about sea snails and rigging a sailboat. But did we even consider what the kids may like? So we asked them…

Hey kids, what kind of camp would you like to go to?

“Trampoline camp,” said Kai Bryant. Honestly, not a bad idea to just have the kids bounce all their energy away.

“Scooter camp – not the motorized kind. And skateboards, let’s ride skateboards all day,” said Leo Castro.

“Princess Camp,” said little Grace Gilbert, who would happily spend all day like Princess Jasmine.

“Farm camp – which I am going to this summer,” said Taylor Gibson, “I get to hold chickens, and I love the goats.”

“I just want to make big paintings and drawings all day,” said Cesar Castro. “I love art; I could be an artist.”

AMERICA PLAYS AT THE KEY WEST THEATER

A

udiences know every single word. EVERY. SINGLE. WORD. The band America has had so many hits on the radio, there isn’t a harmony or lyrical hook that isn’t recognizable. “When you cast your spell you will get your way, When you hypnotize with your eyes, A heart of stone can turn to clay —doododooodoooodo.” Just like that, the whole song materializes. For anyone who has listened to music for the past five decades, America’s songs bring back memories and a dreamy time of songwriting at its finest. And this is the chance to see them live at The Key West Theater on Sunday, April 30.

“Back in the ’70s, there was an incredibly rich batch of music,” said Gerry Beckley, songwriter and co-founder of America. When the band formed in 1970, they become a part of a genre that included the Beach Boys, Cat Stevens (whom they opened for), Neil Young and The Eagles. Beckley had met Dan Peek (who passed away in 2011) and Dewey Bunnell, fellow Army kids, in a London high school, where they formed America and wrote their first self-titled album, “America,” a monumental hit. Largely influenced by the Beatles and the Beach Boys, the young friends quickly adapted to the California scene and won a Grammy. From then on hits like, “Horse with No Name,” “I Need you,” “Sister Golden Hair,”

“Ventura Highway,” “Tin Man” and later “You Can Do Magic” become the golden hits of soft rock.

“We’ve had a lot of good fortune, from meeting Dewey and Dan in high school to just being in the right place,” continued Beckley. “But also we’ve worked very hard to keep the band going.” Beckley and Bunnell still play about 100 shows a year. And the music often appears in the fabric of mainstream culture with “Horse with No Name” playing on the game “Grand Theft Auto” and the hit show, “Breaking Bad,” and “Sister Golden Hair” on “The Sopranos.” (Beckley would love to meet Vince Gilligan, he’s a super fan.)

“There is a lot of emotional attachment to the music for both the audience and for us,” said Beckley. “It hasn’t disappeared over time.” Nor has the feeling of their songs, especially with “Sister Golden Hair,” the ultimate song about male commitment phobia; or try to drive through the desert without singing, “I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name. It felt good to be out of the rain. In the desert you can remember your name. ‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain.”

America is American music, defining a whole generation songwriting.

When asked what concert Beckley would go to today, he stuck to his California stars, Wilco.

Interview with actress Erin McKenna

T

his actress/singer/performer won the 2016 Bubba People’s Choice award because she is hitting her stride and has no plans for stopping. Erin McKenna can be mesmerizing on stage. From her lilting voice to her comedic timing to her overall effervescence, it’s no wonder the stage keeps drawing her back and that she keeps drawing the crowds. A Long Island native, she studied dance and psychology at Hunter College in the big city. Without much hope of a stage career, her love of dance and the body led her to a career in massage therapy. After a quick 1,000-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail, McKenna realized she really could do just about anything.

She has mentored teens, done mission work in St. Lucia, worked with Habitat for Humanity – giving is her nature.

And that’s what audiences get. “I love to perform, it is such a passion of mine,” she said. Ten years ago, she came to Key West and saw Desireé in Drag Show and thought, “I need to live here.” McKenna has shone in plays like “Venus in Fur,” “The 39 Steps,” and all things burlesque. Right now, she is performing in “Short Attention Span Theatre” at the Red Barn. And fair warning: McKenna loves her karaoke, and that is one tough act to follow.

If you had a TV tagline, what would it be? It’s for my burlesque alter ego, Cheeky Derriere!

I still don’t understand how Funions are goofy, but it’s catchy.

What is your nerdiest passion?

I like quantum physics and the pineal gland.

If you could take three items on a deserted island, what would you choose, and why?

Coconut oil for moisturizing, nourishment and dental hygiene (its uses are endless), endless supply of pens and paper - with them, you can never get bored.

When I am rescued, I’d have documented the tale.

If you were invisible, what would you do in Key West?

There is no such thing as invisible in Key West. But if I were, I totally want to see how people really are at home in their PJs. What was your first thought this morning? I don’t want to get out of bed and where am I supposed to be today?

Favorite guilty pleasure? Reading gossip rags on airplanes and the occasional binge watching of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” (but I only do it to discover highlighting and contouring make-up tips).

If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? To never be destroyed by big business, natural disasters or human foolishness.

If not a performer, what would be your dream job? I would love to be a neuroscientist, and discover parts of the brain that we are unaware of. Or a physicist — the concepts of dimensions, time and space are so interesting.

Parallel universes and such.

For lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose?

Lunch with my Nana; she passed away about 11 years ago. I would love to sit with her now that I am older and somewhat wiser.

Finish these sentences: My friends and family would describe me as … friendly.

My autobiography would be titled … “The Waxing and Waning of My Silly Psyche.”

One secret I shall never tell … I would love to have a secret, but I can never keep my own.

We will miss Kim dearly and wish her the best in her next chapter.”

riginally from just outside New York City, Paul Mandell performed in musicals, learned guitar and eventually began singing in a few bands in high school. He continued to play in bands at local clubs during college. After graduating with a degree in speech communications he had no idea what he was going to do. After years spent in unfulfilling corporate jobs, he

answered an ad in The Village Voice from Irish Kevin’s looking for entertainers, and “New York Pauly” was born.

“My experience, up to that point, was very limited,” Paul said. When he got the gig and moved to Key West in 2003, he was immediately put on one of the most popular stages on the island. “I was learning as I went along how to do a show for the particular crowd at Kevin’s – developing a set that featured tried and true party songs,” Mandell recalled.

Blending an eclectic set list – on any given night he can go from Johnny Cash to Bon Jovi to Katy Perry to Frank Sinatra – with an “anything goes” Duval Street vibe, “New York Pauly” connects with his fans through music, comedy, and a playful and sometimes provocative banter. Whether he’s inviting someone to jump onstage and sing a song, pitting audience members against each other in the famous Guinness chugging contest, joking with someone sitting at the bar, or rocking the Miley Cyrus classic “Party in the USA,” he tailors the arrangement of his show to suit the crowd. “It’s not about what song I might feel like playing,” he said.

When asked if he gets tired of playing the same songs all the time, he is quick with his response. “I get asked that all the time, and the answer is no, that’s the job,” he said. “If the hardship of my job is that I have to sing ‘Sweet Caroline’ every night, I can live with that.”

His ability to read and connect with a different crowd every night not only helps Paul decide what to play next, but it also helps him decide who will be his next target – and his banter with individual audience members actually gets requested from time to time. “I actually have received tips with notes that say ‘it’s my friend’s bachelor party, please embarrass him.’ Most people understand it’s all in good fun.” The comedy is Paul’s favorite part, “When the room just explodes laughing,” he said, “this is very cool.”

Paul is able to think back on his days in corporate America and remain humble. “I do appreciate how special my situation is,” he said. “I am grateful beyond words to the owners of Irish Kevin’s for allowing me the privilege of being on their stage for almost 14 years.”

K

aitlyn and Kelley met in college, traveled the world together and ended up in Key West working at Shots and Giggles together. Even though Kelley is packing up to move home later this week to Martha’s Vineyard, their 10-year bond will forever be strong.

The two agreed that the most popular thing at Shots and Giggles is, surprise, shots!

Their favorites to serve among the locally driven clientele are Jameson whiskey and Suerte tequila. The popular mixed drinks usually include Tito’s vodka.

Both Kelley and Kaitlyn agreed that the best part of working is the customers. “It’s the best locals on the island,” said Kaitlyn. “They come here after work, sometimes before work, too. We always have a lot of fun.”

Hannia, the owner of the bar, said the staff is such a tight family that Kelley will be hard to replace. “We set the bar high here,” she said. “I need another Kaitlyn or Kelley, because they have been the perfect duo for the past five years.”

Kaitlyn said she’s staying put. “I came down with a backpack and planned to stay for six months,” she said. “Six years later, I’m still here.”

hirteen fighters from FightSports Florida Keys in Big Pine Key brought home 14 medals at the 2017 Newbreed Jiu Jitsu Classic Tournament in Miami Springs on April 8. The team, made up of six adults and seven kids, brought home a total of six gold medals, four silver, and four bronze.

My biggest inspiration in school has been Officer Diggy. Although he doesn’t work here any more, he has always inspired me to do better and be a better person.

I plan to go into the military and go to college after I graduate from high school.

No, I would not make the Keys my permanent home. I have been here my whole life and am ready to go out and explore.

KEY WEST HIGH SCHOOL HONORS NATIONAL MERIT FINALIST Brian Coward Day recognizes academic achievements

K

ey West High School recently celebrated the academic achievement of senior Brian Coward, who earned the elite honor of being named a National Merit Finalist. He is one of just 16,000 in the country honored for achievements in academics, athletics and service. He has aspirations to pursue engineering at the University of Virginia. To show Conch Pride, the school held Brian Coward Day on April 13.

“I’ve had the opportunity to see Brian grow up from a quiet, studious young student in elementary school to the accomplished young man he is today,” said principal Amber Archer Acevedo, who also was Coward’s principal at Poinciana Elementary. “I am honored to present him with this distinguished award.”

Recognized for his outstanding performance in the STEM field, Coward was selected to participate in the U.S. Naval Academy Summer STEM Program and attended the National Youth Leadership Seminar and the University of Florida Youth Leadership Conference. He was recognized by the governor as Monroe County’s Florida Sunshine State Scholar. He was also selected by his peers as the Best All Around for the Class of 2017.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center - Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager The Domestic Abuse Shelter (DAS), a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, has an opening for a full-time Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager. Candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. Responsibilities include the day to day supervision and management of DAS residential facilities. The Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager possesses at minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence, or high school/equivalency and four years providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence. Two years of successful supervisory experience in a domestic violence and/or sexual assault agency is required. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups, proven experience training staff, and excellent organizational skills.
