Basketball, baseball, hockey — details of last night’s games are on everyone’s lips. Who won? Who lost? Who scored? Who blew it? Who went to the White House and who stayed home? Sports consumes Americans, Keys people included. This week, we asked …

What’s your favorite sports team? “I’m going to have to say Argentina’s national soccer team. The kids’ mom is Argentinian and they are getting old enough to care,” said Brenden “UB” Eubank.

Brody Vandervoort is both a baseball and a football player. Although his family had plenty of suggestions he sticks with his favorite — the Boston Red Sox. “I don’t know, they’re just my favorite team. Plus, I have an uncle from Boston.”

Christine Paul, dean of students at Marathon High School, can only answer one way. “My favorite sports teams are the Marathon High School Dolphins.”

Call, Click, or Visit Today! “My answer is J-E-T-S!,” said Neil Angiulo. “I’m originally from New York, and I know I’m living in Dolphin land, but …”

Here goes the first test run of 20,000 Wolbachia-infected males from Mosquitomate. Tubes filled with 1,000 males contaminated with the bacterium were released by Beth Ransom from Mosquito Control on Stock Island on April 18, in hopes of reducing mosquito reproduction. These are NOT genetically altered mosquitoes; the bacterium renders them sterile and unable to reproduce with females. For 12 weeks, two times a week, mosquitoes will be released and compared to a control site elsewhere in the Keys. Stock Island is the first trial in the state. HAYS BLINCKMANN/ Keys Weekly

T

he annual political pilgrimage to Tallahassee took on special meaning this past week as Monroe County elected officials and administrators visited to the capital to lobby legislators on issues affecting the Keys. Created in 2009 by State Representative Holly Raschein, Florida Keys Day is now one of the most popular lobbying events, because legislators appreciate the travel challenges as well as the courtyard reception featuring Keys fare like conch fritters, Key lime pie and rum punch. This year’s event even featured a performance by Marathon Councilman John Bartus. Now a year removed from the passage of the Florida Keys Environmental Stewardship Act (FKESA), some state officials say the $5 million annual commitment is at risk, as bills funding Everglades restoration left little money for other projects. “I am hopeful we will be part of the final budget negotiation and will certainly be grateful for whatever we can bring home,” said Raschein. “We are just as important as the Everglades. We are a vital resource to the state of Florida and our economy depends on a pristine environment – which is in line with the Everglades policy.” This year 98 individuals — including elected officials from the county and each of the five municipalities — joined administrators, CEOs and community activists to bring a unified voice to the Capitol. “We are all facing the same problems and in need of the same funding to accomplish our goals — which is to keep nearshore waters pristine,” said Islamorada Mayor Jim Mooney during the courtyard reception. “We are so complicated down there that there is no simple answer in the Florida Keys.” The delegation’s schedule included meetings with the Office of Insurance Regulation, where members of FIRM and Ocean Reef’s David Ritz grilled OIR Commissioner David Altmaier on the risk models in relation to windstorm premiums. Other presenters included FWC, the Surgeon General, Department of Economic Opportunity and Visit Florida President Ken Lawson, who praised the Keys representative for stepping in to support the tourismbased agency when house budget cuts threatened its existence. “Representative Raschein is a real leader, someone that is a friend to me and will stand up for your community,” Lawson told the group. “Tourism is the backbone of our economy and community and Visit Florida has been extremely effective in the Keys, spending a million dollars here alone,” Raschein said. Florida Keys Day was sponsored by a number of local businesses and organizations from Ocean Reef to Key West.

MARATHON WEEKLY / APRIL 21, 2017

THE CAUSE & THE COLLECTION SARA MATTHIS

“I

sara@keysweekly.com

t’s an easy sell. As soon as I tell them it all goes to the kids, they start looking harder,” said Jodi Gonzalez. She’s the parish administratorslash-store manager for St. Columba Episcopal Church’s newest venture — the Hammock House Nearly New Thrift Shop. She said this, smiling as she straightened neatly organized clothing on hangers. Although it opened in November, it’s still largely unknown to the bargain-shopping, deal-finding, lovers-of-everything-unique population mourning the loss not only of the Salvation Army in town a few years ago, but also the closing of the Habitat for Humanity resale shop on Big Pine Key. Until the Hammock House’s operations opened, it was a black hole for shoppers whose lifeblood quickens at the word “resale.” The Nearly New Thrift Shop is tucked away in Gulfside Village, between the dentist office and the Zumba studio on the east side. It’s got the goods — and the stuff is good. Labels like Chico, Tommy Bahama and Ann Taylor Loft are common. It has brand-name fishing shirts for men plus odds and ends for around the house. The costume jewelry arranged in the glass case sparkles brightly. “The jewelry.” “The knickknacks.” “The purses.” Rev. Deborah Maconaughey, a self-admitted thrifter, chimes in with “And the prices are reasonable!” after Allison Cranmer, Linda Dissen and Cathy Walters name their favorites. These women, and the church staff and parishioners, pour much of their energy into the cause for one important reason — the children. “Our mission is to offer highquality care for children after school and at camps over the summer and school breaks through the Hammock House,” Maconaughey said. Certainly, the congregation’s heart knows no obstacles when it comes to providing for the kids. Its extensive programs cover everything from drum circles to mainland field trips to see the Marlins play to staycation and sleep-away camps over the summer. Everything, and we mean everything, is free! “I think we could do more. It’s just the logistics …” said Maconaughey, wistfully.

CHURCH-OPERATED THRIFT STORE FUNDS KIDS’ PROGRAMS

BRIEFLY Sends us your Summer camp info The Keys Weekly newspaper is collecting camp information from every area of the Keys to help parents and kids come up with a summer plan. Send details such as the dates, times, activities and cost to sara@keysweekly. com. Information is due by Tuesday, April 25. Photos are welcome, as well. Hair-a-thon helps local family Trish Farthing of Trish’s Island Girl Salon is hosting a “Hair-a-thon” on Sunday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at her salon at 11524 Overseas Highway. The event benefits the four children of Clifford Cease, who was allegedly murdered recently on Big Pine Key. Proceeds from the haircuts will help the family with immediate financial needs. For more information, call 305395-2616.

Allison Cranmer is the director of the Hammock House. She and the other volunteers have about 20 children in their care every day after school, and about three times that number on school breaks and summer vacation. SARA MATTHIS/Keys Weekly

When the donated goods for the regular weekend thrift sale at St. Columba spilled over into the yard, and not another toaster or wedding dress could be crammed into the tiny shed, the church sought extra space. That, paired with the need to serve the kids, meant they had to go bigger — into the space in Gulfside Village. It takes about $84,000 to entertain, feed, transport and educate the kids every year. Right now, they have about 20 kids regularly after school, but the program swells to three times

that number during the special summer camps and on school breaks. More, even, to appease the church’s voracious appetite to do it bigger and better. “This year we are going to have a water park on the church grounds for the kids,” said Maconaughey. “It’s true, we’ve been planning it for about two years.” Oh, and then she hinted that church officials are looking for a bigger space for Hammock House. It never ends!

“Our mission is to offer high-quality care for children after school and at camps over the summer and school breaks through the Hammock House.” — Rev. Deborah Maconaughey

There will be free activities for children that will help build awareness about environmental issues including touch tanks, a lobster pot, making re-usable shopping bags, a sand sculpture contest and face painting. All visitors can enjoy music beginning at 11 a.m., and there will be a silent auction. For more information, call Sandy Haas at 513-708-7213. The Executives are locally educated in the real estate industry bringing quality service to their clients. They offer residential and commercial sales and leasing, developments, vacation, annual and affordable property management, luxury home sales, and land and investment opportunities. Broker Gidget Jackson has 30 years of experience in residential, commercial and property management in Florida and takes pride in the personal professional services offered by her company. “There is no deal is too big or too small,” she said. “We sell them all from Key Largo to Key West.” She says the company stands out because they do something different in the industry by tailoring their services to meet their client’s needs, rather than the traditional way of blanketing services and agreements. “We offer a Quick Sale Program that saves sellers lots of money when they offer a property at market price and it sells quickly,” she said. “This shows our dedication to our clients first.” The Realty Executives franchise is an international company with a wide network in the real estate industry for more than 50 years, Jackson said they pride themselves in advanced technology to benefit their customers. “Our company maximizes internet exposure of our listings beyond local and automatic MLS feeds to allow syndication of our listings throughout the world,” she said. MARATHON WEEKLY / APRIL 21, 2017

‘IT SHOULD BE A HOLIDAY’ Grouper season opens May 1 KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

WANT TO LEARN HOW TO CATCH A LIONFISH?

“T

he first day of hunting season up north is like a holiday,” said Castaway Waterfront Restaurant owner John Mirabella, who is hosting the “Uno De Mayo” grouper and lionfish tournament on May 1. “The opening day of grouper season should be a holiday, too.” In the spirit of keeping things simple, Castaways and Tilden’s Dive Center are hosting the first opening day tournament in the Middle Keys — even though it falls on a Monday. “I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time,” he said. “And, now that I have more space to do it, we were able to throw this together rather quickly.” Mirabella just bought the marina property adjacent to the 15th Street restaurant, and is hoping to fill the canal with boats for the tournament weighin. “The spearos will be able to spend more time on the water and get the party started faster, since the weigh-in and party can be reached by boat,” he said. For a tournament in its first year, he said, he hopes for 25 participants, with proceeds benefiting Sanctuary Friends Foundation of the Florida Keys. “Castaways and Tilden’s have always been a huge supporter of our projects and with the lionfish eradication efforts in the Keys,” said Monroe County Mayor and Sanctuary Friends Board Chairman George Neugent. Mirabella has had lionfish on his menu since the invasive fish first showed up in Florida Keys waters. His lionfish recipes have been shared around the world and in very fine publications such as the Keys Weekly and National Geographic. Wendy Hall of Tilden’s Scuba Center, also a champion of lionfish eradication, hosts an annual lobster and lionfish tournament during lobster mini season.

REEF Environmental Education Foundation hosts free lionfish collection and handling workshops and lionfish dives in several locations throughout the Keys. Workshops teach ways to catch and handle the venomous spines on lionfish, and include practice time with professionals during a skills dive to collect the invasive species. To register for the workshops, visit reef.org. Upcoming events include:

– eggs laid by invasive lionfish EVERY three days

The registration fee is $65 with a captain’s meeting (including sushi, beer, tournament hat, and six tank fills) on Sunday, April 30 at 6 p.m. at Tilden’s Dive Center in Marathon. The weigh-in fiesta will be held on Monday, May 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Castaway’s Waterfront Restaurant. Additional fiesta tickets for family and friends can be purchased for $25. Prizes include gift cards to Tilden’s Scuba Center and Big Time Bait and Tackle, stays and dinners at local resorts and restaurants, fillet knives, and more. There will also be a raffle of other prizes for $5 tickets. Categories include largest grouper, total weight of three grouper and all lionfish, and largest lionfish. To register or for more information, call Wendy at Tilden’s at 305-743-7255. Grouper season starts Monday, May 1 at midnight.

Week 11 Going forward, the Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed in the paper every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders. Teams marked with an asterisk (*) had at least one member miss the previous weigh-in. Although we still calculated the team’s percentage of weight loss, it was weight-loss achieved over two weeks.

THINK

Fad diets, diet pills, juicing — they don’t work. In our parents’ day there was cottage cheese and wrapping yourself in garbage bags to promote weight loss. Before that there were “tonics” and little exercise horseys. The bottom line is this — if there was a pill or a potion that really worked in the long term, then not one of us would be talking about weight management at all. Unfortunately, we succumb to these gimmicks because we are so desperate to find a quick fix. Listen: the only long-term effective weight management skill is to change the way think about fueling our bodies. We need to think of food as fuel for daily living and to fuel it the best way we can. The rest takes care of itself. —Myfitnesspal.com

Holy, olive oil! You know how nutritionists keep telling us to use it “sparingly”? That’s because there are 238 calories in just 2 tablespoons of olive oil. So, remember, while olive oil is full of healthy fat, it’s also full of calories.

238 calories = 2 tbs olive oil

Recipe

THAI COCONUT CURRY TURKEY MEATBALLS INGREDIENTS 1 lb ground turkey 1 lb ground turkey sausage* 1 tsp curry powder 2 tsp ground basil ¼ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp garlic powder ¾ cup almond flour 1 egg, beaten 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbsp chopped fresh ginger 3 tbsp Thai red curry paste 1 14 oz can + ¾ cup full fat coconut milk ⅓ cup chopped fresh basil 1 tsp salt + more to taste

INSTRUCTIONS Begin by preheating your oven to 375. Mix together the ground turkey and sausage in a medium sized bowl. In a smaller bowl, mix together curry powder, basil, ginger, garlic powder, and almond flour. Add to the mix and incorporate well. Finally, add the egg. Form the meatballs into 1- to 1.5-inch diameter balls, and place on a large baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes. While meatballs are cooking, make the sauce. Heat a large skillet to medium high heat, add coconut oil. Add the chopped veggies: onion, bell pepper, garlic, and ginger. Cook for 5-7 minutes until onion is translucent. Add curry paste, then all of the coconut milk. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes until the curry paste is completely mixed into the sauce. Add salt, and more to taste if needed. Add meatballs to the sauce, and cook for another 5 minutes. Finish off with fresh basil. Serve hot over spaghetti squash, noodles, zoodles, rice, or cauliflower rice. — wholesomelicious.com *Turkey sausage can be hard to find without fillers and added sugar. You can also use ground pork, or all ground turkey as a replacement.

Local band is the hottest ticket in Marathon SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

O

kay, they don’t play that often; but when they do, they pack the house. In Pursuit, a threepiece band, consists of Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Captain Dave Dipre (keyboards and vocals), Detective Lieutenant James Norman of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (guitar and vocals), and Captain Joe Moreira (drums), a local commercial fisherman. The name “In Pursuit” is a good fit. “James and I are always in pursuit of the bad guys, and Joe, well he’s in pursuit of the fish,” said Dipre, the band spokesman. Dipre and Norman have been playing together for about two years, often teaming up on the holidays for jam sessions in Dipre’s backyard. Moreira joined about a year ago. Now they play two or three dates a month around town. All of the guys have about 30 years of experience playing music. “We come together really well — great harmonies, instrumentals,” Dipre said. “I guess the band name is also about being in pursuit of making the music better, playing better, the pursuit of happiness.” This is definitely a labor of love for the trio, as they all have families and demanding day jobs.

In Pursuit will play Saturday, April 22 and Saturday, April 29 at Burdines. Their standing gigs right now are at Overseas Pub and Grill and Burdines in Marathon. And they play what they love. “We do covers of songs you know, but not stuff you hear every day on the radio — Zac Brown, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin and just a ton of different tunes,” said Dipre. The band plays awesome versions of Jerry Rafferty’s “Baker Street” and OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars.” Right now, the band’s complicated schedule means that only Dipre and Norman will play on Saturday, April 22 at Burdines, and Dipre will play solo on Saturday, April 29 at Burdines. Come out to listen!

30 STUDENTS GOING OVERSEAS County second to New York in EIL

T

hirty students from Monroe County schools have been chosen to take part in international programs this summer. The students, who will travel to 19 countries and take part in 24 different programs, outnumber those of any other county except the New York City metro area, said Heather Beard, director of admissions for Experiment in International Living, a crosscultural program based in Vermont. Divya Navani, a 9th grader at Key West High School, received a full scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Only 10 students nationwide received scholarships from this foundation, said Aaron Morehouse, executive director. Eighteen of the Monroe County students participate in the Take Stock in Children program, said Beard. Eight others received meritbased partial scholarships through the Experiment in International Living’s essay contest. “We have more vacancies available in certain programs for additional Monroe students, if they apply right away. Students should contact me directly at 802-258-3412 or at heather.beard@experiment.org,” Beard said. “The Experiment actively recruits students from Monroe County, Florida, and we were invited to give presentations at Key West High School, Key West Collegiate Academy, Marathon High School, and Coral Shores High School. MARATHON WEEKLY / APRIL 21, 2017 The Marathon Weekly is proud to partner with Marathon High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and MMHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Fin Pride.”

ANNE GRACY JUNIOR

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? The activities that consume most of my time are band, soccer and cross country. All of these have helped immensely with my drive and work ethic. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why? Ms. Ramos has been my biggest inspiration at MHS. As my cross country coach, she has really encouraged me to step up as a leader and improve my times. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? AP calculus has given me insight into the rigor of a college class. Ms. Heyl realy makes it challenging and never relents when it comes to assigning work. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? Snapchat, just because I’m not very active on Instagram. I like the voice modifying filters. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Tourists in the deli line at Publix. Seriously. What are your plans after high school? I’ve wanted to attend the University of Florida since I was little, but I don’t know yet what I want to pursue while I’m there. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? No. After college, hopefully I will be able to move back to Jacksonville where I was born. I just don’t think I can survive without Chick-fil-A. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … to seize every opportunity available to me. If I hadn’t moved here, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do all the things I love.

T

hey’re mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky, The Addams Family. Da da da da. Snap. Snap. Da da da da. Snap. Snap. Oh, yes, the famous TV show has been turned into a musical comedy and the Marathon High School drama club will reveal its interpretation of all that dark humor on Friday and Saturday. “It’s the story of Wednesday Addams all grown up, her coming-of-age story,” said director Carrollyn Cox. “She finds a boyfriend and doesn’t know exactly what world she belongs in — the ‘normal’ world or the Addams family.” The show opened on Broadway in 2010 starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. Locally, it stars junior Ariana Patterson in the leading role and sophomore Aaron Tipsword as her beau. Gomez is played by junior Jay Walters and the role of Morticia belongs to sophomore Shannon Pitchford. There are 10 title characters and a cast of another dozen as dancers, extras, prop wranglers, and spot operators. “It’s a big cast and crew — about 40,” said Cox. “But, I have to say, the kids have taken ownership of this show. I have done very little in the way of choreography or makeup design. They have done it all themselves.” Patterson’s amazing pipes are featured throughout the show with numbers like “Pulled” in Act 1 and “Crazier Than You” in Act 2, and Walters’ singing voice is surprisingly strong for his first musical role. Pitchford’s comedic timing is impeccable, and look for Hannah Gracy to be a scene-stealer as the Addams’ grandma. And then there’s Anthony Proudnik as Fester … he grabs Weird by both ears, kisses it on the lips, and saunters off stage. He is outstandingly funny. There’s some laugh-out-loud bits — especially the marital strife between Gomez and Morticia and the recurring effusive delight in the macabre. “The cast has a really good energy. The little kids are really excited and that’s nice to be around,” said stage veteran and graduating senior Gracy.

The Addams Family musical comedy performances are on Friday and Saturday, April 21-22 at the school auditorium. Curtain is at 7 p.m. and tickets are $10 at the door — there are plenty of seats but get there early for a good one.

“I

wanted to live on an island, so I ended up here,” said Tarpon Creek Bar and Grill Bartender Dani, who moved to the Keys from Philadelphia. “I was tired of living the city life.” Overlooking Bonefish Bay harbor, she shakes up mojitos and more while chatting with her guests. “I love the people who come in here,” she said. “They are usually relaxed, happy to be here, and want to have fun. Plus, do you feel this breeze and see this view?” Her mojito of choice is the mango mojito. Made with mango rum and a mango puree, “you’re tasting the love in it,” she said. The menu item she says best complements the drink: The Island Chicken. Served with a mango salsa and black beans and rice, she said it is her favorite go-to entree. When she isn’t bartending, she’s loving on her 3-year-old dog, Buddha, preferably at the beach. ACROSS THE POND

How to complain in the King’s English…

I

’ve always been partial to good British humor (humour?). I’m especially fond of the Monty Python stuff, particularly “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” (“Who are you who are so wise in the ways of sciJOHN ence?” “And there was BARTUS much rejoicing.”) Even when people aren’t is a City Council trying to be funny in member and a former Mayor of Great Britain, they are the City of Maraoftentimes very amusthon. John is also ing. My friend Wayne a musician who “Mac” McCormick from performs around the UK recently sent me town at various establishments. an e-mail with actual complaints from proper Brits, many of which I’ll repeat here so that I may fill up a column. Tenants in housing often have issues and complaints for their landlords. What makes the British complaints different from the American complaints is how they’re worded. For example, in America, if the toilet doesn’t work, we call the landlord and say, “The (expletive deleted) toilet doesn’t work!” Across the pond, one might handle the same complaint in a much different fashion: “Sometime before I shuffle off this mortal coil, if it’s not too much trouble, I’d fancy a crap in my own working loo.” Without further ado, here are some actual UK tenant complaints. Please imagine these spoken in a fine British accent. 1. My bush is really overgrown round the front and my back passage has fungus growing in it. (I won’t touch this one.) 2. He’s got this huge tool that vibrates the whole house and I just can’t take it any more. 3. It’s the dogs’ mess that I find hard to swallow. (Just wash it down with water.) 4. I want some repairs done to my cooker as it has backfired and burnt my knob off. 5. Their 18-year-old son is continually banging his balls against my fence. (That’s gotta hurt!) 6. I wish to report that tiles are missing from the outside toilet roof. I think it was bad wind the other night that blew them off. 7. My lavatory seat is cracked, where do I stand? (Huh…?) 8. I am writing on behalf of my sink, which is coming away from the wall. 9. Will you please send someone to mend the garden path? My wife

tripped and fell on it yesterday, and now she is pregnant. (Well, at least we now know what causes that.) 10. I request permission to remove my drawers in the kitchen. (Whatever turns you on, dude.) 11. 50% of the walls are damp, 50% have crumbling plaster and 50% are plain filthy. (Good counting, Einstein!) 12. The toilet is blocked and we cannot bathe the children until it is cleared. (I don’t even want to know what they use the sinks for.) 13. Our lavatory seat is broken in half and is now in three pieces. (This person was in the same math class as Einstein above.) 14. This is to let you know that our lavatory seat is broke and we can’t get BBC 2. It’s not just tenant-landlord complaints that Mac sent me. Here are some actual newspaper story excerpts that found their way to the UK press: • Commenting on a complaint from a Mr. Arthur Purdey about a large gas bill, a spokesman for North West Gas said, “We agree it was rather high for the time of year. It’s possible Mr. Purdey has been charged for the gas used up during the explosion that destroyed his house.” (The Daily Telegraph) • Irish police are being handicapped in a search for a stolen van, because they cannot issue a description. It’s a Special Branch vehicle and they don’t want the public to know what it looks like. (The Guardian) • At the height of the gale, the harbourmaster radioed a coastguardsman and asked him to estimate the wind speed. He replied he was sorry, but he didn’t have a gauge. However, if it was any help, the wind had just blown his Land Rover off the cliff. (Aberdeen Evening Express) ••••• John Bartus performs at the Lorelei, and Satuday night with Jade Storm at the Hurricane. Wednesday usually finds John at Tarpon Creek at the Holiday Inn Express, and Thursday, John plays at Sparky’s Landing. www.johnbartus.com
