Some things are sacrosanct. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and … the Easter Bunny. Or, they should be. But eventually the cat has to come out of the bag and young children learn the truth about very special family traditions. We asked …

When did you learn the truth about the Easter Bunny?

“My parents told me,” said Christina McIntyre of Food for Thought. “Of course I was sad. It meant no more Easter stuff!”

Ted Violissi can’t remember the specifics, but has a clear memory of another myth buster. “Our parents told us to keep the Santa thing alive for one more year for my little brother who was in second or third grade. On Christmas Eve, my dad stepped in the ashes of the fireplace and walked around the tree in his sock feet,” he said.

“My Easter Bunny got arrested when I was like six years old,” said Takara McKnight. “We had just visited him in Key Largo. My dad showed me the arrest picture. He was still wearing his ears.”

“I grew up on a farm in Elkhart County, Indiana. We had horses, pigs, chickens, cows and white rabbits. I don’t think we ever had an Easter Bunny,” said Keith Weldy.

The Easter Bunny has questions about this question: “What truth? What are you talking about? Do you know something that I don’t? Please be specific.”

arathon Mayor Dan Zieg asked the city staff to research the idea of a city business license at the council meeting on Tuesday. It would be in addition to Monroe County’s occupational license. “I spoke to (Monroe County Tax Collector) Dee Dee Henriquez and she said we could require ADA-compliant ramps, elevators, parking and fire inspections (as a condition of the license),” Zieg said, referring to the Americans with Disabilities Act. When asked for clarification from other council members, he said the licensing wouldn’t apply to existing businesses but would be a requirement of new business, regardless of whether the property was leased or owned. “Everyone up to this point would be grandfathered in,” Zieg said. “But at some point, everyone would have to be compliant. This would be a first step.” Current Florida law stipulates that any local renovation of commercial property must devote 20 percent of the total cost to meeting ADA guidelines. Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey told the council that the City of Marathon enforces that state law and cited a specific recent case of a local business owner who renovated a space to include a wheelchair ramp. Councilmember Mark Senmartin floated a related proposal a few months ago, suggesting that local businesses be required to have annual fire safety inspections. He said it would ensure safety, as well as provide a small revenue stream for the City. However, both he and John Bartus voiced their concerns about a city business license. “I think you are going to kill a lot of business,” Senmartin said. On Thursday, Bartus said a business license essentially is just another tax on small, local businesses. “The City needs to move slowly and deliberately on this issue. We shouldn’t do anything without advice

Mayor floats idea of Marathon business license

Zieg said it would address ‘health and safety issues’

and ‘buy-in’ from our local business community and the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce,” Bartus said. “The Americans with Disabilities Act is important. It’s also a federal law. I’m not sure the City needs to be in business enforcing a federal law, particularly at the expense of local small businesses that are renting commercial space in older buildings.” In other news: • The code board presented its case for its continuation in light of the city’s proposal to replace it with a special magistrate. • The council asked for an outside opinion on whether Zieg and Senmartin can run for office again. Both were already seated when the city charter was changed in 2015. Previously, council members were able to serve for three two-year terms. It now states that members can serve for two, threeyear terms. Council members are limited to terms of six consecutive years. At the end of both Zieg and Senmartin’s term they will have served five years. But the charter states “beginning in 2015” making it most likely that, legally, both can run again.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

sara@keysweekly.com

M

arathon’s heroes don’t always get the recognition they deserve. For instance, Ed Waldorf, 89, is still flying and still putting all the hours into his pet project — the Experimental Aircraft Association Museum in Marathon. It’s free, it’s open every day, and there’s a wealth of fabulous details few know. “This,” said Waldorf, pointing to a Soviet Aeroflot pilot’s cap, “was brought in by a Fed Ex pilot who traded his cap with the Aeroflot pilot over in Germany. He just brought it in here and gave it to us.” The museum is filled with lots of great artifacts like that — old World War II flight kits, a 1970s vintage instrument training simulator, and pictures of the original Marathon runway. It was dirt and much wider and longer than it is now. According to local pilot Teresa Condas, Waldorf is essential to the museum’s success. “He’s a dreamer, in a good way,” Condas said. “He wanted a hangar for our club. He got a hangar. He wanted doors for it and figured out how to do that. He fundraised to get the signage that he wanted. He’s a make-it-happen kind of person.” Keith Weldy, a non-pilot member of the club, describes Waldorf as “the glue that holds this chapter together.” The little museum has about 15,000 visitors a year. That may seem high, but it isn’t enough for the congregation of volunteers who run the place. The EAA museum is located at the Marathon Airport in the hangar next to the Sheriff’s Office and is open almost every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during season.

12 QUESTIONS WITH

ED WALDORF

SARA MATTHIS

MARATHON WEEKLY / APRIL 07, 2017

Nickname? Nothing. (Someone told The Weekly that he’s called the “Father of Aviation in Marathon.” He told us that honor belongs to the late Ken Agnew.)

How long have you lived in the Keys? Since 1984. I was born in western New York and lived in Miami for 35 to 40 years. I moved to the Keys when I got tired of the snow. (Waldorf has a DRY sense of humor.)

What other jobs have you had? I served the U.S. Coast Guard for two years during World War II in Seattle, owned two Carvel ice cream stores in Miami, and worked for Breakstone Food Co. (cottage cheese). I was also an air traffic controller for a couple of years; I only earned $6,200 a year doing the last one. When was the EAA chapter formed in Marathon? It was in 1999. The Keys aren’t so much about the “experimental” part. We focus more on the Young Eagles part of the program that interests young kids in flying. Since 1992, 2.5 million kids have had an introduction to aviation through the program nationwide. The more kids that have that chance, the more kids that will pursue a pilot license. (The next Young Eagle day in Marathon will be on May 20, 2017.)

When did you learn to fly? I learned in Rochester, New York, when I was 29 years old. I flew a Piper PA 11.

Tell us an interesting aviation fact. There are only about 600,000 licensed pilots in the United States, 120,000 of which are commercial pilots. That’s a tiny portion of the population.

What’s changed about aviation since then? The federal aviation regulations used to be just 16 pages. Now, it’s as thick as a Bible.

When was the last time you flew? Just this morning. I just went around the patch to see if I could land this cotton-pickin’ thing.

FATHER OF MARATHON AVIATION

What do you fly now? I have a Legend Cub. If you could have any plane, what would it be? I think I would go back to a Piper Archer. It’s simple, it’s comfortable and you can travel with it.

What other hobbies do you have? Back in the day I used to dive a lot, snorkel, fishing — stuff like that. And I sailed. I lived aboard in St. Petersburg, Florida and kept my boat in Coconut Grove, Florida. Did your family follow in your footsteps and become pilots as well? One of my daughters became a pilot, as well as a son-in-law and a grandson. I haven’t got the rest of them going yet.

AUCTION SET TO BENEFIT FAMILY Big Pine Key man was raising four children

F

amily members Shamera and Larry Pratt are having a silent auction to benefit the children of Clifford Lawson Cease, who was allegedly murdered last month on Big Pine Key. The auction is set for Sunday, April 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Castaways Restaurant in Marathon. Cease was father to four, including three children of no biological relationship born to his estranged wife and her former husband. The children range in age from 1 to 8 years old. The youngest is the son of Cease and the woman charged with his murder.

Currently, the children are staying in Marathon with Shamera and Larry Pratt, who is the youngest child’s biological uncle. She works at Bishop & Rosasco and he works for Florida Keys Air Conditioning. The couple plan to petition the court for full custody of all four children. Funds raised will help pay for living expenses, and possibly adoption fees. For more information about the silent auction, or to donate, call Shamera Pratt at 305-563-1166. A celebration of life for Clifford Lawson Cease was held on Tuesday, at the Sombrero Beach main pavilion. —Weekly Staff report

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Make U.S. 1 safer What can be done or who can we put pressure on to make U.S. 1 safer? Just recently there was yet ANOTHER head-on crash where multiple people were air lifted. At certain areas on U.S. 1 there are “rumble” bumps that are either embedded into the white line or grooves that have been carved into the road. GREAT!!! But that does not solve the head-on problem because BOTH of these warning systems are on the outside to warn against a driver running off the road. Why can’t these grooves be put into the center line the entire length of the highway where there is one lane each direction? This is a common warning system that is used in the roads of northern Wisconsin and they have seen a dramatic decrease in head on crashes from people falling asleep or just looking out their windows and drifting over the center lane. Even the U.S. Department of Transportation has found that these center lane rumble strips can reduce head-on crashes up to 60 percent. Here is a link to the U.S. Department of Transportation on the subject of center line rumble strips , their safety and how they don’t cause any additional wear on the roads: https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/roadway_dept/ pavement/rumble_strips/safety.cfm I have seen on U.S. 1 that there are center line reflectors or bumps but those are spaced so far apart they do not effectively alert the driver who has crossed the center line. The warning grooves need to be constant. Heck, I have passed many slow drivers over these areas and never felt my tires go over the bumps, thus the need for “constant” warning grooves. I find it so shocking that, with as much traffic as the Keys experiences and the high number of head-on crashes we see, a more focused effort on warning drivers of crossing the center line has not been made. It is time that we stop seeing people needlessly killed because a drunk driver, a drowsy driver or a distracted driver simply wanders over the center line. Please let’s make a push to make our road safer with “milled rumble strips.” Michael Kennedy Ramrod Key

Construction of luxury resort begins in June SARA MATTHIS

hile plans to stop taking reservations for recreational vehicles at Knights Key RV Resort keep getting pushed back, plans for construction of a new luxury report are still on track, according to the principals. Last week, the RV park put up a notice advising patrons the park would close at the end of April. That date got pushed back until June 30, and again until July 8. According to Vice Presidnet Noah Singh of The Singh Company, the two endeavors are compatible for now. “There’s no reason to close the park early. We want it to stay open as long as it can,” he said. Already, a construction trailer has been moved on to the property in preparation for the construction of a high-end, 199-room resort. The RV park has many loyal customers who are dismayed that a multi-year family tradition is coming to a close.

Resort construction will begin in June, and workforce housing will be the first to be completed. —Noah Singh

“We’ve been coming down here since 1992,” said Lorraine Search, who spends three months a year at the park. She and her husband have found another RV space in town for next year but said many of her friends have put their “rigs” up for sale. Resort construction will begin in June, Singh said, and workforce housing will be the first to be completed. The plans call for 199 rooms, a three-meal restaurant and bar, and shoreside waterfront activities and concessions. The final design will look very similar to the 175-room Oceans Edge Hotel and Marina that was recently completed on Stock Island. “It will be classic Conch,” Singh said. The Singh Company has developed and sold dozens of large scale projects in the Florida Keys including Tranquility Beachfront Hotel and Resort in Marathon and The Marker in Key West.

County and municipal officials meet with Florida Department of Transportation representatives to discuss safety on U.S. 1. CAMMY CLARK/Contributed

Neugent hosts meeting with FDOT

M

onroe County Mayor George Neugent hosted a three-hour meeting Friday with the Florida Department of Transportation’s District 6 Secretary Jim Wolfe and government officials throughout the Keys to discuss a wide range of ideas and projects to improve pedestrian safety, traffic flow and problem areas along the Overseas Highway. “We are here to work on ways to help mitigate our traffic problems because everybody has had enough of it,” Neugent said. “It affects us all and it potentially affects our economy.” The meeting, held at the Monroe County Marathon Government Center, was not to make decisions, but for officials from the county and the municipalities of Key West, Marathon, Islamorada, Key Colony Beach and Layton to voice concerns and ideas directly to Wolfe. It also was the opportunity for the government officials of the Florida Keys to express their unity to FDOT that traffic congestion in any part of the Keys is a problem for all. “We all live along the same road and stretch of islands,” Monroe County Commissioner David Rice said. “What happens in Islamorada affects Key West and what happens in Key West affects Marathon. We all need to work together and be involved in coming up with the best solutions.” Issues that were discussed – and that FDOT agreed to look into or further study – included: • Need for pedestrian bridges: Discussion addressed building permanent ones at locations such as the triangle in Key West and at Founders Park in Islamorada, as well as the purchase of temporary pedestrian

bridges that can be used at different sites, such as Rowell’s Waterfront Park in Key Largo and the Marathon Community Park. • Need for center turn lanes: Officials from the county and the municipalities brought up several problem areas along U.S. 1 where the lack of turn lanes leads to traffic backup and potentially to accidents. • Rumble strips: Rice brought up a citizen’s suggestion to put rumble strips along the centerline of the road to help prevent head-on collisions. Wolfe said he got the same citizen’s email and thought it was worth considering. • Ways to lessen the number of vehicles on U.S. 1: Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi requested that FDOT look into the feasibility of some type of rapid transit/light rail system. Discussion also included creating a better bus system. • Need for uniform pedestrian crosswalks in the Keys: FDOT agreed to continue to work on making the crosswalks safer. At the meeting, county officials also asked FDOT to look into the possibility of designing the rehabilitation of the Old Seven Mile Bridge to include the running of electricity to the countyowned Pigeon Key. Discussion also included how and where to run the trolley system once the bridge’s renovation is completed – and what can be done regarding the expected heavy use of the parking area at the north end of the bridge. “This meeting has been very helpful for me,” said Wolfe, who was accompanied by FDOT Traffic Services Program Engineer Ramon Sierra. “We wouldn’t have known about some of these issues because we don’t live here, and we don’t drive here regularly. … We have taken notes and notes on the issues discussed and will look into them.” — Contributed

Dog Lab specializes in making dogs happy through training and dog daycare. The company, established in 2016, does basic and advanced training, search and rescue training, puppy classes, and behavioral changes for abused dogs through positive reinforcement with fun games and interactions. Dog Lab also offers classes to become an animal trainer. The owner Gus Cirulli and his team have more than 20 years of experience with wild and domestic animals at zoos and aquariums. “When you have worked with so many different species, you become versatile and a lot sharper on behavioral modification,” he said. At Dog Lab, they know a lot of locals have demanding work schedules, sometimes with two or more jobs, and this way, furry friends have a place they can go for a better quality of life. Some of the dogs come all week, other just come for play time a couple times a week to relieve stress and add stimulation to their day. Cirulli has also funded “Noses for Conservation,” a nonprofit organization that trains dogs in South America from shelters to help search for endangered species.

rom the outside, it looks like an eight-hour project. But insiders know that Relay for Life is a five-month endeavor that begins just after the American Cancer Society walk. This year, there are 16 teams participating. “Teams start raising money at the kick-off in November,” said Relay For Life Middle Keys chairman Christina Gonzalez. “Key Colony Beach does the golf ball drop and Hawks Cay Resort hosts a turkey trot.” In addition, teams have bagged groceries at Publix Supermarket, hosted a gala and cornhole tournaments, and auctioned off eligible bachelors and bachelorettes from the Middle Keys. But the final push comes on Saturday, April 8 from 2 to 10 p.m. at Marathon Community Park. There, the teams set up booths around a track. Cancer survivors, caregivers and those who have lost loved ones to cancer bond as they walk, pausing to visit at the booths. Most of the booths will be hosting some type of interactive experience — whether it’s handing over food for a small donation, or playing a game. The entire event is familyfriendly. “We play music and the Body Language dancers perform from 3 to 4 p.m. and the Zumba dancers take over from 7 to 8 p.m.,” said Gonzalez. Gonzalez’s crew included Candace Doyle, Jenni Cameron, Ora Greene, Maria Banks, Sherry Holmes and Hill Bell with special assists from Michelle Card and Suzy Curry

ave you ever seen the inside of the old jail (or the new one), or watched someone be extracted from a crushed car, looked inside Trauma Star and military aircraft, seen how cute airboat drivers are in Everglades City (I mean know why the Everglades are so important to the Keys), been to the residentsonly parts of Ocean Reef, or seen the inside — alllllll the way inside — of the Monroe County medical examiner’s office? Well, I hadn’t until Leadership Monroe County, but more importantly, I got to do these things with 21 of my new best friends. Last weekend, at 6.5 miles into the 7 Mile Bridge Run, I realized exactly how the past seven months of leadership sessions have paid off. I needed to know — for reasons — someone in a KRISTEN of authorLIVENGOOD position ity and that person, thank goodness, I is a Marathon High School and happened to know USF grad, mom of through Leadership. two beautiful little Leadership girls, and wife to Monroe County’s some cute guy mission is buildshe met in a bar. The 22 of us began our seven-month journey by selling “Arabic oil” to each other. We brawled over prices, learned about tourism, and then brawled again while hunting down “pinky,” the highly sought-after scavenger-hunt flamingo. I learned first hand that working together and helping each other out is always the better thing to do. We spent the weekend in Everglades City learning about its influences on Florida Keys history, and about the

Leadership Class 25 graduates this weekend in Key West after seven months of learning about the inner workings of the Monroe County. One of my favorite experiences was seeing the inside of the Ranger dive training facility with my new best friends Lindsey Ballard, Kate Bauer-Jones, Dammit Darrell Birkhimer, Mike Card, Wendy Coffman, Steve Cook, Theresa Faber, John Gallant, J.C. fragile environment that is the lifeblood of the Keys. We looked for ghost orchids, pissed off Lou Caputo, and played “flip cup” with alumni. (If you thought the little communities in the Keys are small, then you haven’t been to the Everglades, where the only thing that stays open past 10 p.m. is Circle K.) Watching a video of Hurricane Katrina’s wrath in Mississippi during the emergency management session was an eye-opener. When hospital employees started numbering themselves in case the water didn’t stop rising, it hit home for our class. Our class project, emphasizing “3-4-5 Stay Alive,” will be released before hurricane season. We saw the inner workings of the local jails, hospitals, schools and government offices. We had our own Kate Bauer Jones of United Way involve us in an interactive simulation that explored poverty in the Keys. The experience brought some of our classmates to tears over such simple, yet profound, obstacles such as a lack of transportation or food. I am sad to have the experience end (but excited about cocktails this weekend at Shirley Freeman’s house!), and my bosses are probably happy to have me back to work on all my missed Fridays. Cheers to Class X-X-Y. Oops, I mean V – the best chocolate-making class in the history of leadership.

MARATHON WEEKLY / APRIL 07, 2017 The Marathon Weekly is proud to partner with Marathon Middle School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and MMS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Fin Pride.”

JOHNEIL MITCHELL EIGHTH GRADE

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MMS and why are they important to you? I am not really in any activities as yet, because I didn’t get the chance to talk to anyone about it yet. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MMS and why? There are a lot of teachers that have been my inspiration. They all try their best to allow you to get work done so you can make yourself, your parents and school proud. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Pre-algebra is very important. It was the only class I was struggling in and I try my best to get my facts straight and even get a lot of help from Mr. Hare. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? Snapchat. I love the flowers filter. What are your plans after high school? I plan to get a high GPA and complete all my assignments so I’m ready for what’s next.

ops Stiglitz continues to be remembered fondly as a family man, and major supporter of Marathon High School and Stanley Switlik Elementary. The Career and Technical Center at Marathon High School is named in his honor — “Pop’s Place.” His memory also lives on through the annual Pops Stiglitz coed softball tournament and home run derby that raises money for Marathon High School scholarships taking place the weekend of April 21-23. “Pops’ thing was simple. If you raise $500, you better give out $500, and we have been keeping with that tradition,” said Bambi Kuck, the event co-organizer with Oni Ferreiro. “Pops was always raising money for the kids, and was always looking for different ways to help the schools.” Last year, the addition of the home run derby meant an extra night to the tournament. Kelley Struyf, of the Stiglitz family team, was a home run derby participant last year and plans to do it again this year. “I think the guys like it the most because they get to measure up to each other,” said the 2011 Marathon High School graduate. “Plus there is beer, raffles, stuff like that. It’s a lot of fun.” The derby takes place on Friday, April 21 at 7 p.m. at the Marathon Community Park fields. The batter and pitcher must be signed up to play in the weekend’s tournament. There will also be a D.J. and raffles that evening. The tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23. “It’s a great weekend, and a great cause,” said Neil Cataldo, who has been playing in the Marathon tournaments since the inception of the Pops tournament’s predecessor, the Nate Grill tournament. “It shows the commitment of this community to continue

to give to the youth.” Kuck expects a full field this year and can’t wait to raise more money for Marathon kids. “We want more spectators for the tournament,” she said. “We really hope more people will come out and watch; there is some really good softball being played out there.” Plus, beer and full concession — what’s not to love? Last year, 16 Marathon High School students received $13,000 raised from the tournament for college scholarships. Marathon High School seniors can find the scholarship application in the CAPS office. The application is due by May 12. Also, students who need community service hours are welcome to volunteer; call Bambi Kuck at 305-731-3800.

W

anna try out some yummy beers on tap and not have to order a pint of each? At Castaway, with their 52 beers on tap, a flight is the way to go. Castaway bartender Tracy has been serving up drinks for the past four and a half years after moving to the Keys nine years ago from Knoxville, Tennessee. Her five flight choices are: Franziskaner, Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc, Sculpin, Grapefruit Radler, and Castaway IPA. Each serving is 7 ounces. She said if trying out the beers during happy hour (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.), she would suggest the buffalo shrimp, but for dinner, you can’t beat the sushi rolls. Her favorites are the King of the Jungle lionfish roll, Seven Seas roll, and the Surf and Turf roll. In the event a favorite beer is found, all drafts are $1 off during happy hour and are half off during the bonus happy hour from 3 to 5 p.m. Tracy’s favorite part of working at Castaway is chatting with all her regulars and visitors who come through the doors. She is also a big fan of the owners John and Arlene. “They have always been so good to me.” When she isn’t bartending, she’s shell collecting and beachcombing, and exploring the other islands. “There’s so much to offer down here,” she said. “It’s the best; no one knows your last name, or cares how much money you make.” Castaway Waterfront Restaurant is located at 1406 Ocean View Ave, down 15th Street in Marathon.

Week 9 Going forward, the Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed in the paper every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders. Teams marked with an asterisk (*) had at least one member miss the previous weigh-in. Although we still calculated the team’s percentage of weight loss, it was weight-loss achieved over two weeks.

THINK Some people view weight loss as punishment, but it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself. Instead of focusing on the less-appealing aspects of weight loss like eating less, look forward to its benefits, and your positive thinking will likely inspire you to make changes.

Give me rice over pasta any day. And I like rice better than potatoes too. White and brown rice is almost identical when it comes to calories — a little over 200 calories for one cup. But the body digests brown rice differently — it has less of a glycemic load and more fiber. Cauliflower rice, — Sara Matthis though, is by far the best; it has about 25 calories a cup.

Cauliflower Rice

Bikes

This may be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Really. It capitalizes on the trend of cauliflower “mashed potatoes” by creating a faux rice option. Eat alone, or pair it with protein for a complete meal. FYI, ready-made cauliflower rice is available at Publix in both the frozen and fresh produce sections. INGREDIENTS: 5 cups of raw cauliflower “rice” (about 1 medium head of cauliflower; cut into florets and then pulsed briefly in the food processor until they are the size of grains of rice). 3 tbsp salted butter 3 garlic cloves, minced 6 tbsp shredded parmesan cheese salt and pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS: In a small saucepan over a stovetop, add butter and minced garlic. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring often, until garlic flavors are infused into the oil (melted butter). In a large skillet, wok or frying pan, add cauliflower rice and bring to mediumhigh heat over stove top. Pour in butter mixture. Sprinkle cheese on top. Stir to mix and cook until cauliflower is tender. Add salt and pepper to taste and stir a few more times until everything is thoroughly mixed. Serve while warm. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley if desired. — kirbiecravings.com

O

nce again, the miracleworkers of the Marathon Runners Club pulled off another 7 Mile Bridge Run. The logistics were made a little more complicated this year with the construction zone on the Old 7 Mile Bridge, and yet the race went flawlessly. Thousands of runners crossed the bridge safely and most of them will try for one of the lottery spots again next year. —Weekly Staff report

MARATHON WEEKLY / APRIL 07, 2017

Forget the Final Frontier?

Things may be looking up in America’s space efforts

I

was a Space Coast kid from the 1960s. My dad really was a rocket scientist — he worked for the Chrysler Corporation on the Apollo/Saturn IB program. Even though there were political forces to reckon with back then (can anyone remember why Mission Control ended up being located in Houston, so far away from the Cape Canaveral launch site?), at least there was a unifying vision of where we needed to go, and a time frame of how soon we needed to be there. And we got there — the moon — thanks to hopes and dreams and engineers using slide rules. What we also had were good old-fashioned reliable liquid-fueled boosters that just worked. The Apollo/ Saturn IB combination was reliable, and technologically superior to the Soviets’ Soyuz spacecraft. And the Saturn V was THE heavy-lift booster that not only got us to the moon, but also could have been used to really expedite the construction of the International Space Station, had it still been available. Don’t even get me started about how we totally wasted further research opportunities when we allowed Skylab to fall back to Earth. Unfortunately, President Nixon killed the Apollo/Saturn program, leaving three moon missions on the table, dooming Skylab, and abandoning America’s superior and reliable manned launch vehicles in favor of this political kludge that became the Space Shuttle. Like most other rockets, the Shuttle was built of components made by the lowest bidders. Unlike other manned launch systems, however, the Shuttle design was compromised along the way with the addition of solid rocket boosters (basically Roman candles that can’t be shut off once ignited) and no escape mechanism for the astronauts on board. Far from a reliable “space truck,” the Shuttle was a very complex and very expensive launch vehicle. The successor to the Space Shuttle was supposed to be NASA’s Constellation program, featuring the Ares I and Ares V boosters and a larger Apollolike command and service module assembly. These, for all intents and purposes, have been abandoned. All we’ve been doing since the end of the Shuttle program is hitching a ride with the Russians, who still fly the same Soyuz spacecraft they were flying in the 1960s and 1970s. It’s what we could still be doing reliably with Apollo/ Saturn technology.

This has left the United States – the most technologically advanced nation both on and off the planet – without a way to get astronauts into and back from space JOHN for years. Things, however, may be BARTUS looking up. NASA is a City Council has revealed that member and a it wants to send an former Mayor of Orion capsule with the City of Maraastronauts on a luthon. John is also a musician who nar orbital mission performs around within the next two town at various years, relying on establishments. a new SLS (Space Launch System) that borrows some booster technology from the old Shuttle system. And SpaceX is planning to send two space tourists on a lunar orbital mission in 2018, aboard their (as yet untested) Falcon Heavy rocket. I hope they both succeed. While some may argue that space flight is a luxury we can do without during tough economic times, I argue that the benefits to humankind have far outweighed the costs in so many areas, from technology to medicine and beyond. Besides, when one looks at what the government has wasted billions on over the past decades, the entire space budget is but a drop in the bucket. And America shouldn’t hand over our leadership role in space science to someone else. But we need a vision that will set America’s course into the future, one that includes the ability for us to get people into and back from space. If we don’t outline that vision, if we just say, “Forget the Final Frontier,” then the Russians and the Chinese will become the world’s premiere space powers. And we’ll be able to visit our rockets in museums and reflect on our glory days. Let’s hope that NASA and SpaceX are wildly successful, and that the USA reclaims the leadership role in space technology. ••••• John Bartus plays this Friday (tonight) as well as Sunday and Monday at the Lighthouse Grill at Faro Blanco, Wednesday at Tarpon Creek at the Holiday Inn Express, and Thursday, at Sparky’s Landing. www.johnbartus.com
