Will Sears or Kmart permanently close? Key West is in a bit of corporate limbo right now, (will they stay or go?), and frankly, it stinks. Will Walmart swoop in like vultures or will prayers be answered for a Target? Then again, do we need another box store or will Amazon Prime become our only go-to? Lots of Big Box questions, so we asked locals …

How do you feel about the closing of ‘Big Box’ stores? “It would be awful; where would we go to shop?” said Gary Hartman. “It’s already 2 1/2 hours anywhere, but if we got a Kohl’s, Target or Best Buy then that would be great. But not Walmart.”

“That’s weird to even think about,” said Elizabeth Chalaca. “We don’t have anything else so it would be super sad. I just couldn’t imagine having nowhere to shop.”

EXPIRES 4/14/17

“Just sad,” said Bob Shillinger. “We would need to replace them with something, not a Walmart though, but a Bass Pro Shop wouldn’t be bad.”

“I couldn’t imagine losing Kmart, but then again, if we got a Target that would be fantastic,” said Lee Ann Rose. ”But not a Walmart, that wouldn’t be as good.”

“I’ve lived here twelve years,” said Pam Dula. “And ever since I have lived here they have said Walmart is coming, and still no Walmart.” Listen to Pam, folks, just because they say it, doesn’t make it so.

Officials seek U.S.1 improvements Neugent hosts meeting with FDOT

M

onroe County Mayor George Neugent hosted a three-hour meeting Friday with the Florida Department of Transportation’s District 6 Secretary Jim Wolfe and government officials throughout the Keys to discuss a wide range of ideas and projects to improve pedestrian safety, traffic flow and problem areas along the Overseas Highway. “We are here to work on ways to help mitigate our traffic problems because everybody has had enough of it,” Neugent said. “It affects us all and it potentially affects our economy.” The meeting, held at the Monroe County Marathon Government Center, was not to make decisions, but for officials from the county and the municipalities of Key West, Marathon, Islamorada, Key Colony Beach and Layton to voice concerns and ideas directly to Wolfe. It also was the opportunity for the government officials of the Florida Keys to express their unity to FDOT that traffic congestion in any part of the Keys

• Ways to lessen the number of vehicles on U.S. 1: Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi requested that FDOT look into the feasibility of some type of rapid transit/light rail system. Discussion also included creating a better bus system. • Need for uniform pedestrian crosswalks in the Keys: FDOT agreed to continue to work on making the crosswalks safer. At the meeting, county officials also asked FDOT to look into the possibility of designing the rehabilitation of the Old Seven Mile Bridge to include the running of electricity to the countyowned Pigeon Key. Discussion also included how and where to run the trolley system once the bridge’s renovation is completed – and what can be done regarding the expected heavy use of the parking area at the north end of the bridge. “This meeting has been very helpful for me,” said Wolfe, who was accompanied by FDOT Traffic Services Program Engineer Ramon Sierra. “We wouldn’t have known about some of these issues because we don’t live here, and we don’t drive here regularly. … We have taken notes and notes on the issues discussed and will look into them.” — Contributed

is a problem for all. “We all live along the same road and stretch of islands,” Monroe County Commissioner David Rice said. “What happens in Islamorada affects Key West and what happens in Key West affects Marathon. We all need to work together and be involved in coming up with the best solutions.” Issues that were discussed – and that FDOT agreed to look into or further study – included: • Need for pedestrian bridges: Discussion addressed building permanent ones at locations such as the triangle in Key West and at Founders Park in Islamorada, as well as the purchase

of temporary pedestrian bridges that can be used at different sites, such as Rowell’s Waterfront Park in Key Largo and the Marathon Community Park. • Need for center turn lanes: Officials from the county and the municipalities brought up several problem areas along U.S. 1 where the lack of turn lanes leads to traffic backup and potentially to accidents. • Rumble strips: Rice brought up a citizen’s suggestion to put rumble strips along the centerline of the road to help prevent head-on collisions. Wolfe said he got the same citizen’s email and thought it was worth considering.

elaney Smith seems like a normal 11-year old. She’ll talk about what she did at school, she’ll chug down a soda while laughing about her friends, she’ll even show off her new puppy, Nala – things an average 6th grader does. But if you happen to be checking out Nick Norman and the Naturals on a Friday afternoon at The Lazy Gecko and they call Delaney up to the stage, you’ll realize as soon as she gets behind the mic that she is anything but average. “I don’t have any of my own shows yet, but sometimes local musicians invite me on stage to sing a few songs with them,” Delaney said with a smile. While she may not be headlining any shows yet, she is certainly an accomplished musician in her own right. Last year Delaney won the Junior category at the Habitat for Humanity Votes for Notes competition, she’s performed twice at the annual Key West Musicians Festival, she plays saxophone in the HOB Middle School Band, and she regularly performs with the Bahama Village Music Program Joyful Voices Choir and School of Rock (of which she was the founding lead singer). As a Christmas present last year, her mother Cassidy — a constant presence wherever Delaney happens to be performing, her biggest supporter and No. 1 Fan — bought her studio time at the Grateful Guitar Studio to record an original song Delaney wrote for her grandmother. Ever modest, when asked about her performing ukulele as well as vocals for her song, Delaney would rather talk about everyone else playing on the track and how much

their support means to her. “D-Reay is engineering the recordings and playing percussion, James Whitehead is helping and playing guitar, and Daryl Brooke is adding some steel guitar,” Delaney said, “and I appreciate every second of their influence.” Moving to Key West from Cincinnati, Ohio with her mother and grandmother in 2011 has surely helped her development as a musician, and a community that accepts people for who they are has helped define what Delaney loves about music so much. “You can be yourself with music – you can write about what you’re feeling, or you can make something up,” she said. “There are so many different types and styles – you can choose your favorite or create your own!” — Contributed

erri knows a thing or two about cocktails in Key West, since she’s been serving ’em up here since 1989. She’s been at Tree Bar for the past year and a half, after 20 years at the now-closed Rusty Anchor. “I love the diversity of the different people I come in contact with,” she said, while squeezing fresh oranges and grapefruit in the machine. Her go-to drinks include the fresh juices, like screwdrivers, double-oh sevens, and greyhounds. Since she’s there from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the week, she also said the Ramey’s Famous Bloody Mary is pretty popular. Being the first stop on the Key West Pub Crawl for a lot of the cruise ships that come into town, sometimes she’s there even earlier to help get the party started as soon as possible for the island’s visitors. When she isn’t working, she’s spending time with her granddaughters. “I am usually at softball and soccer games over the weekends,” she said, “or trying to get out on the boat.” Across the patio is Angelina’s Pizza, the perfect accompaniment to the drinks mentioned here. The complex is located at 202 Duval St.

Paul Melroy has settled into his latest endeavor as executive director of Key West Film Society and Tropic Cinema with humor and quiet gusto. A Cherry Hill, New Jersey man, Melroy’s roots are rock’n’ roll but he has an affinity for the more refined artistries such as opera and art house films. “I’ve worked with some of the greatest singers in the world, including people like Jose Carreras,” said Melroy of his time as managing director of the Atlanta Opera; when he was managing director for Conspirare, one of the world’s finest vocal ensembles. (They won a Grammy in 2015 for Best Vocal Performance.) Accolades aside, Melroy and his wife came to Key West for the sunshine and love of film. When talking about taking over for Matthew Helmerich, former director, he said, “I have wanted to keep things seamless.” Melroy has instituted some “quieter changes,” as in, even more art house and music films as evidenced by the varied and exciting upcoming Tropic schedule. When asked if he gets to see a lot of movies, Melroy said with a slight smile “I play hooky to see one or two.”

A LITTLE PAST COUNTRY LEE ANN WOMACK AT THE KEY WEST THEATER HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

C

ountry legend Lee Ann Womack is just as heartfelt and genuine in person as in her music. She speaks with a surprisingly soft Southern lilt for such a commanding songstress, but her message, like her talent, is strong and clear. Walking away from the glitz and glam of mainstream country music, Grammy-winning Womack is seeking humbler stages

Lee Ann Womack said she likes the smaller venues. CONTRIBUTED

and reaching out to newer audiences – thankfully, because now Womack will be coming to Key West for the first time and playing one night only at The Key West Theater on Monday, April 10. Womack gushed with excitement, “Florida has true country music fans. I have never been to Key West but I can’t wait; who knows, maybe I won’t leave, like the rest of you.” She is touring with Alan Jackson right now, but also is venturing out solo. “I’ve spent many years in the spotlight; I’ve earned the right to do it differently. I really want to play in smaller venues, not where they play basketball or hockey.” With mega-hits like “I Hope You Dance,” “I’ll Think of a Reason Later,” and “A Little Past Little Rock,” Womack can certainly call the shots. Her career has earned her multiple Country Music Awards and Grammy nods, one win, but she’s been in the business long enough to say, “There is not much of a country music scene any more.” Womack is a Dolly Parton/Loretta Lynn type of old-school country singer. Her latest album “The Way I’m Livin’” is a soulful blend of poignant ballads and passionate songs chosen by her and released on a smaller label. She puts herself now among peers such as Alison Krauss and Patty Griffin and shuns the big business of country hits.

“Writing or listening, I don’t go for the party feel,” said Womack. “I want to fill the void for people who want serious music. It’s American roots music with a mixture of old-fashioned bluegrass.” She likened her career to a race between the tortoise and the hare: slow and steady wins by focusing mostly on the quality of the music. Opening act will be Key West’s own Nick Norman making it a show not to be missed and most assuredly will be sold out. Go to www.thekeywesttheater.com for tickets.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I am a part of the Conchettes, SWAT, Executive Board, and CSALT. These are important to me because I enjoy being involved in school and helping the community. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? Mr. Carter, because he has taught me a lot about music in AP Music Theory and choir. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? AP Government, because before that class, I knew nothing about it and how it works. Now that I know more, I can make good decisions in the future. What is your favorite social medium and why? Whom do you follow? Twitter, because people put the funniest things on there. I follow Ariana Grande, Chrissy Teigen, Jimmy Fallon, and James Corden. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The congestion of traffic in the mornings and afternoons, especially during the holidays. What are your plans after high school? After high school I am going to major in early childhood education and I hope to apply for a program to travel around the world and teach at military bases. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? No, because I want to travel the world and teach. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… how close a community can be through tough times and that I can rely on my close friends for the rest of my life.

Jimmy Weekley

The city attorney has found a way for me to run one more time,” Craig Cates joked, before clarifying that he has reached the term limit. He urged the community to get involved. “I don’t consider myself a politician, but a community servant.” A big announcement coming from Key West City Commissioner Jimmy Weekley from District 1: “I am not, in no way, shape, or form, running for mayor. Let me just squash that rumor now,” he said at the forum.

“You can’t stop what’s going to happen to Key West,” he said. “But, let’s try and slow it down.” Dave Gonzalez is a native Conch and currently the curator at Ernest Hemingway House and Gardens. He mentioned that tourism Dave Gonzalez needs to “meld” with the heritage of Key West and that he would be a strategic leader for the community. Monroe Holloway, a 2003 graduate of Key West High School, said he wants to help out the younger generation in Key West. He cited wages, housing and childcare as important issues. “Our community has always been one Monroe Holloway to look out for each other,” he said. “We need to focus on the key drivers and be the beacon of the One Human Family we speak of so often.”

Todd German, chairman of Hometown, said he was extremely pleased with the turnout, especially in an off election year. Scanning the beachside crowd, he mentioned the new young faces in the crowd who came out to test the waters. “We hope to host a candidate workshop in the near future,” he said.

KEY WEST CITY COMMISSION Sam Kaufman, incumbent, said he will be running again. “I love being on the city commission, and keep an open-door policy,” he said, carrying signs he had saved from the last election. “I am all in for 2018.” Oliver Kofoid said he is not officially running, yet, but said “never doubt what small people can do.” Kofoid said he loves District 2 and that his commissioner (Kaufman) is doing a good job, but hopes someone will run against him. “If no one does, and my company says it’s OK for me to run, then this may be the only time I’ll be able to stick it to a lawyer,” he said, smiling. Sunny Andracchio of Schooner America wasn’t sure which district he will be in, but said he loved Key West and the people of the island. “I will always vote for the interests of the people as a whole,” he said. Sunny Andracchio

Commissioners Richard Payne and Margaret Romero were not present and no one announced intent to run in either district.

MONROE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Monroe County Commissioner David Rice said he will be running for re-election. “I love being on the commission; campaigning, not so much,” he said, adding he wants to help plan for the future. As of yet, there are no challengers. Hometown chairman Todd German said the District 2 seat, which George Neugent will be vacating, will be a hot race to watch. Two people, Chuck Weitzel and Chuck Licis, spoke at the event but have not filed officially. KEYS ENERGY UTILITY BOARD Charlie Bradford, Group 5, said he plans to run for the seat he currently holds, and said with the addition of a new seat that will encompass the Lower Keys to have representation through the Seven Mile Bridge, he hopes qualified candidates will step up. “We think it is important to have people on this board that have experience,” he said. “The energy board is very serious and it’s important to know what it going on.”

MONROE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD Both Bobby Highsmith and John Dick said they will be running for re-election and there were no challengers present. Highsmith spoke of the stability in the school board, while Dick said he was proud that Monroe County teachers are the highest paid in the state. U.S. HOUSE, DISTRICT 26 Key Wester Giancarlo Espinosa stepped up to speak. Since becoming an American citizen a year and a half ago, he said he’s “going all in.” Espinosa discussed issues like healthcare, incarceration rates, and bank bailouts. The Giancarlo Espinosa seat is held by Congressman Carlos Curbelo, who was unable to attend due to Congress being in session.

Greg Daniels

Greg Daniels said he’s looking into running for one of the open seats. As a member of the Keys Energy Advisory Board and a construction coordinator for a local telephone/internet/cable provider, he said he’s worked with Keys Energy and has a background to support his campaign.

Walt Drabinski has a 40-year background in the electric industry as an electrical engineer and a management consultant for electric companies. “I can contribute to the energy board and I hope you will support me,” he said to the crowd.

Hometown PAC is no longer a political action committee, and is now a nonprofit organization. “Since we don’t endorse, there was no reason to remain a PAC,” said Hometown Chairman Todd German.

ON THE STAGE

KEY WEST WEEKLY / APRIL 07, 2017

ADVENTURE 101 HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

KEY WEST THEATER PRESENTS ‘OKLAHOMA SMITH AND THE PANTHEON OF ANNIHILATION’ emember yelling, “No Indy, Don’t go in there!” at the movie screen? Obviously Chris Shultz and Michael Marrero did when they wrote their new play “Oklahoma Smith and the Pantheon of Annihilation” now playing at the Key West Theater. It’s their version of an older, weightier and funnier Indiana Jones – now dubbed Oklahoma Smith – in a slapstick interactive musical comedy. Finally it’s OK to yell at the stage because the audience decides what happens next in Oklahoma’s adventures (or misadventures). Shultz and Marrero have created a new theater genre — musical comedy game show. “It contains profanity, drug use and firearms,” said Marrero, preparing the audience opening night, “and that is in just the first seven minutes.” The play is riddled with the familiar but always with a comedic twist. Oklahoma Smith, played by local favorite David Black, starts off as a retired teacher pulled back into saving the world and fight the evil Mistress Nefarious, played by a delightfully accented Alexandra Zeto. He must find the “Book of the Dead” with trusty sidekick Beanpole and not fall in love with an almost identical Karen Allen played by seasoned actress Dakota Mackey-McGee. But plot aside, the most ludicrous and hysterical moments are delivered by the background characters, played by local funny men Brandon Beach, Pony Charvet and Chad Newman — let’s just say wigs, dresses and lots of rhinestones are involved. From plot twists to actors playing multiple characters, the play has it all, but don’t plan on sitting back and just enjoying the show. The audience is the show when asked to pick the next scene or action for Oklahoma resulting in victory or defeat. And hey, when the audience chooses wrong, just like any techie knows, REBOOT! It’s hilarious, original and terribly indicative of Key West’s love of dark comedy, cross-dressing and nostalgia for anything ’80s.

“Time is an amazing currency,” said Shultz, referring to the four years of development the play has undergone, “There is a huge amount of talent involved and grown locally. But, sorry, there are many f@*#ing curse words.” “Oklahoma Smith and the Pantheon of Annihilation” runs through April 29 at the Key West Theater, 512 Eaton St. Tickets are available at www. thekeywesttheater.com or by calling 305-985-0433.

amily members Shamera and Larry Pratt are having a silent auction to benefit the children of Clifford Lawson Cease, who was allegedly murdered last month on Big Pine Key. The auction is set for Sunday, April 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Castaways Restaurant in Marathon. Cease was father to four, including three children of no biological relationship born to his estranged wife and her former husband. The children range in age from 1 to 8 years old. The youngest is the son of Cease and the woman charged with his murder.

Currently, the children are staying in Marathon with Shamera and Larry Pratt, who is the youngest child’s biological uncle. She works at Bishop & Rosasco and he works for Florida Keys Air Conditioning. The couple plan to petition the court for full custody of all four children. Funds raised will help pay for living expenses, and possibly adoption fees. For more information about the silent auction, or to donate, call Shamera Pratt at 305-563-1166. imply elegant. That is the best way to describe the new restaurant, Little Pearl — Fish House and Wine Bar at 632 Olivia St. The food is sophisticated, creative, and above all, strikingly delicious. Paired with refined decor, Little Pearl is challenging the Key West culinary scene to go to the next level of fine dining. Before the New York Times or The Huffington Post swoops in and turns this Key West gem into a social media darling, experience it first. owned Blackfin Bistro and now owns Antonia’s and Thirsty Mermaid. “At Little Pearl we provide an elevated menu with the best products and freshest seafood. I’m particularly inspired by the passion and creativity of my amazing chef partners, John Inglesby and Ryan Shapiro.” The team has created a seafood experience that is indulgently satisfying and uncompromising. Little Pearl’s starter Bangkok Octopus with mint, basil, cilantro, and mung beans immediately characterizes the chefs’ creativity. The octopus was tender, coated in slight heat of chili oil and balanced by the fresh cooling herbs. The Tuna Carpaccio, a favorite special, is both peppery and spicy, opting for bold flavors over the mundane. Any critic would be silenced by the Seared U-10 Diver Scallops served over roasted sweet corn puree, shiitake mushrooms and chorizo oil. Perfectly cooked, the scallops are sweetly supple on the inside with crisp veneer atop and the other ingredients add just the right earthy bite. Finish with the homey treat of Moscato and Ginger poached pear with vanilla gelato swimming in salted caramel. And that, friends, is the perfect meal. “The menu is impressively creative but not overwhelming or intimidating,” said co-owner Kristen Onderdonk. While seafood is the star of the show, there is also a grilled 16-ounce bone-in ribeye choice, as well as a comforting dish of Kobe beef cheek Ragu with homemade gnocchi. Little Pearl’s wine collection is varied and happily offers newer, thoughtful choices. The staff, led also by co-owner Lisa Onderdonk, is seasoned, friendly and Key West family, making Little Pearl an immediate neighborhood favorite. Little Pearl boldly declares substance and style go hand in hand.

‘GOOD PEOPLE’ OPENS AT WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSE Play examines roles of luck, character

I

s it luck or strength of character that helps people escape from the situations into which they are born? “Good People,” opening Thursday, April 13, at the Waterfront Playhouse, takes a look at that question, asking why some people have all the luck – and others don’t. Written by Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright, David Lindsay-Abaire, “Good People” was a Broadway hit a few seasons ago, with Frances McDormand winning a Best Actress Tony for her performance. The play won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for best play and was nominated for the Tony Award, the Drama Desk

Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for outstanding Broadway play. It has been one of the most produced plays recently in regional theaters. The play takes place in South Boston — or “Southie” as the locals call it — an Irish working-class neighborhood, known for its history, unique culture, racial tensions and class struggles. It’s a place where a night on the town means a few rounds of bingo, and where the monthly paycheck will hopefully cover the bills. “Good People” is the story of Margie Walsh, who loses her job at the local Dollar Store. Her hilariously snarky two best friends (and bingo buddies) try to provide comfort, while offering questionable advice for her next steps. Her friend Jean, “the mouthy from Southie,” pushes her to look up an old fling. That would be Mike Dillon, who is their one acquaintance from the neighborhood who became a success — a doctor in Boston. The hope is that he might have a job for Margie. However,

the meeting doesn’t go as planned as secrets are revealed and emotional fireworks explode. “I’ve wanted to do this extraordinary play for a few years now,” said director Danny Weathers. “It beautifully captures what I love about good theater — brilliant writing, lots of twists and turns, character-driven humor and really juicy roles for actors. And this cast will knock your socks off. They’re amazing.” The cast for “Good People” includes George diBraud as Margie. Michael Castellano plays Michael, the doctor. Playing Margie’s two best friends are Mary Falconer and Peggy Montgomery. Justin Ahearn plays Stevie, Margie’s boss and bingo pal. Simone Elizabeth Bart, who has numerous Off-Broadway and New York credits, plays Michael’s much younger wife. Michael Boyer creates the world of Boston with multiple set locations. John Jaworski is the lighting designer, Jaime Laba is in charge of costume design and Carmen Rodriguez is the props mistress, with Annie Miners acting as stage manager. —Contributed

he Community Foundation of The Florida Keys presented its 2017 Partners in Paradise awards on April 2 at Sidebar Key West. Active foundation members came together to honor individuals who go above and beyond in our community. This year’s recipients were John Padget of Take Stock In Children; Carmelo Vitale and Carolyn Sullivan, owners of The Bottlecap Lounge; and Tom Callahan from Star of the Sea Outreach Mission. Board Chair Roger Heinen honored everyone by saying, “All of us emphasize the importance of partnership by working together on issues facing our community.” —Weekly Staff report

HAYS BLINCKMANN/Keys Weekly 1. Delaney Smith, left, Raniya Harris, Elina Sweeting-Hodek and Julia Baeder from the Bahama Village Music School of Rock kick off the festivities with a little ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’ 2. Kimball Ingram, owner of Sidebar, hosts the fabulous brunch with Foundation Vice Chair and father Michael Ingram. 3. Dianna Sutton presents Carolyn Sullivan and Carmelo Vitale (not pictured) an award for their business the Bottlecap Loung. The Bottlecap has hosted a record 500 nonprofit events and raised over $500,000 for our community in the past decade, but as Sullivan humbly joked, “We’re just the Bottlecap, what are we doing here?”

4. Executive Director Thomas Callahan of Star of the Sea Outreach Mission is cheered by Rosi Ware as he heads up to receive the Outstanding Non-Profit award. SOS serves more than a half-million meals each year and provides over 1.8 million pounds of food to 9,000 homeless and low-income individuals annually. 5. Ginger King and Rene Romo have a little champagne toast before the ceremony. 6. Chairman of the foundation, Roger Heinen, called John Padget ‘an obvious choice,’ with president and CEO Dianna Sutton, as they award the education advocate and businessman as Outstanding Individual for his influential work with Take Stock In Children.

ave you ever seen the inside of the old jail (or the new one), or watched someone be extracted from a crushed car, looked inside Trauma Star and military aircraft, seen how cute airboat drivers are in Everglades City (I mean know why the Everglades are so important to the Keys), been to the residentsonly parts of Ocean Reef, or seen the inside — alllllll the way inside — of the Monroe County medical examiner’s office? Well, I hadn’t until Leadership Monroe County, but more importantly, I got to do these things with 21 of my new best friends. Last weekend, at 6.5 miles into the 7 Mile Bridge Run, I realized exactly how the past seven months of leadership sessions have paid off. I needed to know — for reasons — someone in a KRISTEN of authorLIVENGOOD position ity and that person, thank goodness, I is a Marathon High School and happened to know USF grad, mom of through Leadership. two beautiful little Leadership girls, and wife to Monroe County’s some cute guy mission is buildshe met in a bar. She enjoys being ing relationships a social busy bee, for constructive red wine, running alliances among (very, very slowly), Florida Keys leaders and spearfishing. – how I got in, I have no idea – to work toward long-term goals for the betterment of Monroe County. The 22 of us began our seven-month journey by selling “Arabic oil” to each other. We brawled over prices, learned about tourism, and then brawled again while hunting down “pinky,” the highly sought-after scavenger-hunt flamingo. I learned first hand that working together and helping each other out is always the better thing to do. We spent the weekend in Everglades City learning about its influences

Leadership Class 25 graduates this weekend in Key West after seven months of learning about the inner workings of the Monroe County. One of my favorite experiences was seeing the inside of the Ranger dive training facility with my new best friends Lindsey Ballard, Kate Bauer-Jones, Dammit Darrell Birkhimer, Mike Card, Wendy Coffman, Steve Cook, Theresa Faber, John Gallant, J.C. Holmes, Donatella Kelly, Chuck Licis, Chuck Lindsey, Barbara Neal, Derek Paul, Jennifer Powell, Jolynn Reynolds, Stuart Strickland, Lisa Thornhill, Angie Walterson, and Chris Todd-Young. CONTRIBUTED

on Florida Keys history, and about the fragile environment that is the lifeblood of the Keys. We looked for ghost orchids, pissed off Lou Caputo, and played “flip cup” with alumni. (If you thought the little communities in the Keys are small, then you haven’t been to the Everglades, where the only thing that stays open past 10 p.m. is Circle K.) Watching a video of Hurricane Katrina’s wrath in Mississippi during the emergency management session was an eye-opener. When hospital employees started numbering themselves in case the water didn’t stop rising, it hit home for our class. Our class project, emphasizing “3-4-5 Stay Alive,” will be released before hurricane season. We saw the inner workings of the local jails, hospitals, schools and government offices. We had our own Kate Bauer Jones of United Way involve us in an interactive simulation that explored poverty in the Keys. The experience brought some of our classmates to tears over such simple, yet profound, obstacles such as a lack of transportation or food. I am sad to have the experience end (but excited about cocktails this weekend at Shirley Freeman’s house!), and my bosses are probably happy to have me back to work on all my missed Fridays. Cheers to Class X-X-Y. Oops, I mean V – the best chocolate-making class in the history of leadership.
