Air ambulance sets record Trauma Star service has airlifted 200-plus this year O n March 26, Monroe County’s Trauma Star air ambulance service had the busiest day in its history.

In a four-hour period, Trauma Star responded to two vehicle accidents 53 miles apart, and a stabbing, transporting five people to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. A sixth person was airlifted by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Air Rescue.

As of March 26, Trauma Star’s two medically equipped helicopters – which can carry up to two people – have transported 202 people in 2017. Of these 202 cases, 50 involved picking up victims in the field as opposed to a Keys hospital. The breakdown of the 50 field transports: 38 trauma, 7 heart attacks and 5 strokes.

“The Trauma Star program always is busy during peak tourist season in the Keys, but this year already is proving to be exceptionally busy,” said Monroe County Fire Rescue’s Andrea Thompson, Captain of Trauma Star and Emergency Medical Services. “We have our second helicopter in operation for a daily 12-hour shift to ensure our community has this life-saving service when it is needed.”

Sunday’s busy night began at 6 p.m. when Trauma Star 1 (the program’s newer helicopter, purchased last year) responded to a motorcycle accident on Sugarloaf Key. The 43-year-old male driver and 29-year-old female passenger – both of Key West – were airlifted to Miami.

They were both in serious but stable condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At about 7:15 p.m., Trauma Star got its second call of the night. This time, there was a head-on collision just south of MM 70 on U.S. 1 on Long Key. Three people in the crash needed to be airlifted: a 42-year-old male and 37-year-old female, both from Georgia, and a 27-year-old female from Miami.

Trauma Star 2 (the program’s second helicopter) transported two of the victims and Miami-Dade’s Air Rescue helicopter transported the third. All were in serious but stable condition, according to FHP. Trauma Star 1 was returning to the Keys from Ryder Trauma Center when it got another call at about 9:55 p.m. to transport a male stabbing victim, in his 20s, from Big Pine Key. Monroe County Fire Rescue transported the victim to Trauma Star’s Marathon headquarters, where he was transferred to Trauma Star 1, which took him to Ryder Trauma Center. He died later from his wounds.

“A day like Sunday shows how important Trauma Star is to the residents and visitors of the Florida Keys,” Thompson said. “I want to thank our flight crews for doing such an amazing job.”

BRIEFLY Sheriff’s office issues traffic alerts Several events will cause traffic delays this weekend. Deputies will be working all three events in an effort to minimize delays, but people traveling through any of these areas during these times should plan extra time to get where they need to go.

• Seven Mile Bridge: On Saturday, April 1 the 7 Mile Bridge Run will shut down traffic both north and south for two and a half hours at the Seven Mile Bridge. Travelers should plan to be across the bridge by 6:30 a.m. to avoid being stuck on one side or the other.

Traffic flow will resume at 9 a.m., but usually takes at least an hour after that to get back to normal. Please plan any travel accordingly and please be patient during the traffic disruption.

• Islamorada: Island Fest at Founders Park in Islamorada will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. And, on Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m., a fundraiser will take place in the area of the MM 84. Islamorada traffic is heavy and slow on a good day, so these two events will most likely cause even more delays in the area.

Open house at FKCC Florida Keys Community College invites prospective students and their families to any of three open house events at the following FKCC locations, dates, and starting times: Middle Keys Center on Wednesday, April 5 at 5:30 p.m., Upper Keys Center on Tuesday, April 6 at 5:30 p.m., and Key West Campus on Saturday, April 8 at 10 a.m.

The regular $30 application fee will be waived for those who submit an application during one of the events.

‘Learn to Sail’ program coming again this summer Middle Keys Sailing Program classes in Boot Key Harbor, sponsored by the Marathon Yacht Club Educational Foundation in partnership with the City of Marathon, will start June 12.

n Tuesday, April 4, members of Marathon’s Code Board plan to present their objections to the Marathon City Council regarding a plan to replace the seven-person panel with a special magistrate. At the Feb. 28 council meeting, City Manager Chuck Lindsey and City Attorney Dave Migut briefed the council on their research on costs and qualifications for a special magistrate, one man or woman who would decide code cases for the city.

“We have an excellent city council and they will do what they believe is right for the city,” said James Leonard, a two-year code board member with two more years to serve. “But, my feeling is that a group of people who collaborate on a decision is better than one individual. I will support the council’s decision one hundred percent, but I feel that the current code board is working quite well.”

The code board, who is reportedly acting unanimously, cite their case by mentioning the wealth of local knowledge and experience on the board, the low cost of operating the board, and emphasizes that the members are chosen by Marathon Council members themselves.

Monroe County, Key West and Islamorada all use special magistrates. The cost runs from $150 to $200 per hour. On the mainland, the average cost is $136. In February, both Migut and Lindsey cautioned the council that a special magistrate is not necessarily cheaper than a code board.

“It’s a wash,” said Lindsey.

The entire council complimented Code Director Stacy Charlton on the department’s performance and focus on compliance, rather than penalty — 75 percent of code enforcement violations are resolved before the board must weigh in.

Most of the comment concerned the pros (impartiality and lack of bias) and cons (lack of local understanding) of a code board versus a special magistrate.

“A magistrate keeps us honest. If the city’s case isn’t strong enough to make it past the magistrate, then we learn what we need to do to make it better,” Lindsey said. “And the magistrate will take recommendations from the city on how to proceed. We can also ask the magistrate to show leniency if there’s room for that. It makes enforcement easier and removes bias.”

Currently, the code board consists of local volunteers: James Leonard, Steven Britske, Ryan Frederick, David Grego, Robert Petrick Jr., John Repetto and Trevor Wofsey.

ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUP FIGHTS FOR MOSQUITO SANCTUARY 32-acre preserve would cost $12 million Weekly Staff Report

“H

ow is the life of a deer more endearing than that of a mosquito?”

That’s what Nancy Bitzman, chairman of LCILB (Love Comes in Little Bites) is asking Monroe County Commissioners.

LCILB, which calls itself a for-profit animal rights group, has been fighting against “mosquito cruelty” in coastal areas since 1989. Currently, the group is seeking a $12 million “mosquito sanctuary” along 32 acres centered between Rockland Key and Big Coppitt.

“The Florida Keys are guilty of the mass genocide of billions of innocent creatures,” said Bitzman. “What we are proposing is no different than the Key deer sanctuary on Big Pine.”

In addition, the LCILB, based out of Berkley California, has proposed a $4 million dollar mosquito protection net that would cover the proposed land area, along with demands that limit air, auto and foot traffic to the area.

However, many argue the mosquito sanctuary will cost millions in wasted tax dollars and is a direct conflict with the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, which currently works to eliminate mosquitos in the county.

“First I had to fight against GMOs in my back yard,” said Key Haven resident Jim Wilson, where GMOs were literally proposed for his back yard.

“And now these guys want to place a mosquito factory just above our neighborhood. What’s next? An iguana sanctuary?”

LCILB has discussed a phase two to go along with the mosquito proposal, which would include added rights for iguanas. Over the last decade, the group has successfully imposed mosquito, rat, snake and roach sanctuaries in areas such as Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, Trenton in New Jersey, and Flint, Michigan.

“We have to be sensitive to their demands and take this very seriously,” said Monroe County Mayor George Neugent. “We are currently reviewing their proposal and trying to find a compromise suitable for both sides.”

Monroe County Commissioners have until July of 2017 to counter the group’s proposal. After that time, Bitzman says the county will be subject to severe legal penalties and national scrutiny.

“I always hear people brag about ‘one human family’ in Key West,” said Bitzman. “Well, I guess the mosquitos didn’t get the memo. How would the Keys look to the rest of the world if everyone knew they slaughtered innocent creatures?”

Currently, Mayor Neugent believes a compromise for the sanctuary can be made for a fraction of the cost, with the mosquito sanctuary located just above Key Haven.

“I believe this can be a burden shared by Key Haven residents,” said Neugent. “After all, they brought this on us by placing national attention on the GMO opposition.”

Take Stock in Children - Monroe Take Stock in Children provides a unique opportunity for deserving students from economically challenged households to escape the cycle of poverty through education.

The Take Stock scholar meets with a caring volunteer mentor each week, usually during lunch, and benefits from the guidance of a skilled college success coach through middle and high school. To remain in the program, the student is expected to maintain A’s, B’s, and C’s, good attendance, and good behavior each quarter, and continue to meet weekly with his or her mentor. The student will receive access to a Florida Prepaid college tuition scholarship upon graduating from high school. The scholarship covers all tuition and local fees towards the attainment of a bachelor’s degree.

Established in 1999, Program Coordinator Chuck Licis says the key to success is the dedicated group of 275 volunteer mentors who meet weekly with the scholars, who guide the students and help them learn valuable self-advocacy skills. He also said the skilled college success coaches, four Keyswide, also meet regularly with the students and offer workshops on study skills, test preparation, college applications and financial aid.

t was revealed this week that Marathon City Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron had a fully realized career as a songstress.

Yes, she is Toni Tennille of the famous Captain and Tennille ’70s duo who penned and sang such hits as “Muskrat Love” and “Love Will Keep Us Together.”

“I just didn’t want that fame to get in the way of what I am trying to accomplish on the council,” said Coldiron, who was first elected to serve in 2015.

Although Coldiron (nee Tennille) has made important contributions to music, they are largely overlooked. For example, she played

with The Beach Boys and also sang on a Pink Floyd album. On the local level, Coldiron has spearheaded efforts to improve local planning law and made council meetings more fun by providing the blow-up beach balls for residents to spike from the audience during citizen comment.

BRIEFLY City offers solution to Triangle Traffic After five years of continuous traffic jams, accidents and aggressive driving incidents surrounding the northern “triangle” roadway leading in and out of Key West, City officials recently announced a handful of proposed solutions to one the community’s most talked about nuisances.

Recently, city officials discovered the lights along Cross Street and MacDonald Avenue, both under county jurisdiction, were not synchronized with city stoplights.

“I think this was something Sunny McCoy did as a joke back in the ’80s,” said Commissioner Jimmy Weekley.

“Problem is, we all forgot about it.”

However, the city has proposed several ideas that could provide immediate relief to commuters, while saving thousands in tax dollars. At an upcoming April 11 meeting, the city will review an idea proposed by local resident Jay Hall.

“I live in the Golf Club and I’ve always grabbed my newspaper from those guys in the middle of the triangle,” said Hall. “And then it hit me.

We could have those guys operate the red lights as they sell newspapers.”

If passed, City Manager Jim Scholl says, the city could consider a similar “no nonsense” approach to other issues facing the city such as constructing underground tunnels or overhead bridges to eliminate the dangerous crosswalks. City officials anticipate a response from the state Department of Transportation in two years, or as soon as 18 months.

TDC explores new marketing initiatives Agency seeks to attract new visitors Weekly Staff Report

$40 million is a lot of money. Every year, the Tourist Development Council collects that in bed tax revenues from Florida Keys visitors.

Most would say the money is spent wisely and drives the economic engine of the county. Others think it could be spent better. At a meeting on Tuesday, the TDC voted to try some new marketing campaigns to improve the visitor experience while silencing some of their harsher critics. Below is a short synopsis of the four microplans:

• CORPORATE SUBSIDIES. Big corporations like Payless shoe store, Sears, and Kmart are on the brink of bankruptcy and as more of the big retailers close, they are leaving gaping holes in the Keys’ commercial infrastructure.

Big Pine resident Cleophis Rankdale has been a proud member of the Radio Shack battery club for years.

“Those tourists fund Fantasy Fest,” said Rankdale. “And my remote control needs weird batteries.”

The subsidy amounts are still being worked out, but are reportedly generous. “People WANT to buy those useless beach umbrella screws for the sand, and there’s just nowhere else that sells them except Kmart,” said the same source. “You can’t get that from the artisans at Mallory Square.”

• New law enforcement uniforms. In an effort to seem less forbidding to carefree visitors on vacation, the TDC has approached the Monroe County sheriff’s office regarding new uniforms: Short shorts, in the traditional forest green, paired with Vibram Five Finger toe shoes for better mobility.

“I’m just worried that my badge is going to tear the thin fabric of our dri-FIT® racer-back tanks when I try to pin it on,” said MCSO Captain Jonathan Crane. “And where am I going to put my gun?”

BRIEFLY Tourists to sit on Marathon Council For the first time, two Marathon City Council seats will be filled by tourists.

Under a change scheduled for a vote this week, Keys visitors staying at least five nights in Marathon will be eligible to seek one of the two two-year “guest” seats on the city council.

“Let’s face it,” said Councilman John Bartus, who proposed the change, “we’re spending their money.

It’s only right that they get a seat at the table.”

The city council is expected to approve the change at its April 1 meeting, scheduled to begin when Freddie Bye takes his first break at the Brass Monkey. The measure will require the removal of two current council members. That removal, under the plan, would follow the same procedure as the recently enacted procedure for choosing a mayor.

‘Turtle Highway’ plan before Congress

• Endorsements. To reach a younger and more hip audience, the TDC has signed an endorsement deal with Monroe County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy, 81, who has agreed to push the Keys on her Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat accounts (#NoKeysHaters). She will also create a TDC-funded video at the Southernmost Point to the tune of Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy.” “I think the first person I will call is Miami rapper Pit Bull,” Sylvia said. “If anyone has his MySpace page, beeper number, or street address so I can write him a letter, I would appreciate it if they passed it along.”

• More traffic. TDC officials worry that some members of groups traveling to the Keys are missing “the good stuff.” And, so, they are planning a campaign to suggest to visitors traveling as a group that each person bring their own car, or Segway, provided it can achieve speeds of 30 mph. “Some people worry this will create extra traffic,” said Marathon Councilman John Bartus, who uses his “down time” in traffic to beat his high score at Candy Crush. Bartus has written to the software game developers, encouraging them to add a feature wherein users can tag their location — i.e., #StuckOnOverseas.

“Check-ins are good,” said Bartus.

An eight-lane elevated toll road that would run from Key Largo to Key West is part of a federal infrastructure plan expected to be introduced soon in Congress.

The route, to be called the Turtle Highway, is projected to cost $110 billion. It would be built using funds from the Mexican government’s repayment to the U.S. for building a wall along the border between the two countries.

The superhighway is part of a massive infrastructure proposal scheduled to be introduced on April 1 by the White House. (Thank you, Trump.)

Officials say the elevated highway would be built above existing roads and bridges in the Keys.

The existing route, U.S. 1, would be generally limited to use by Keys residents, although visitors would be allowed to use it with an “Iguana Pass,” obtained at service plazas along the elevated route. Those passes are expected to cost $500 per year. Revenue from the passes would go to the Tourist Development Council.

arlier this week, HBO thrilled subscribers who have been waiting with bated breath for information regarding the third installment of the popular crime anthology, “True Detective.”

The series will be set in Marathon, and the network has confirmed that a top-shelf cast of Liam Hemsworth and Adam Driver will star in the series, with rumors circulating that Jennifer Lawrence could sign on in the coming weeks.

“We wrote season 3 with Marathon in mind,” said series creator Nic Pizzolatto. “The island’s natural beauty is a perfect juxtaposition to the city’s seedy underbelly.”

Pizzolatto wouldn’t give many details, except to say the story would take place during the Mariel Boat Lift and would be mostly shot around the west end of Key Vaca with other scenes filmed on Coco Plum Beach and Havana, Cuba.

The critically acclaimed first season, starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey (first cousin of Rev. Deborah McConaughey of St. Columba Church) as a pair of homicide cops investigating the murder of a young prostitute in Louisiana, was nominated for several Emmy Awards for acting, writing and direction.

The sophomore season, starring Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams and set in California, was met with less than favorable reviews.

HBO President of Entertainment Sue Naegle said the success of the Netflix original series “Bloodline” helped green light the project.

“We wanted something salty. A show people could relate too, but one that would also allow our viewers to lose themselves in,” she said.

“Early ’80s Marathon will provide us with the backdrop we need to pull off an ambitious show like ‘(True) Detective.’”

Naegle said the show will have a $40 million production budget for the eight episodes and went on to say produces are already having a tough time securing housing for the show’s cast and crew.

The Weekly also confirmed that Marathwon business owner and resident Tim O’Connell has been squiring around location scouts, while consulting with casting directors on possible extras for the show.

“I can’t reveal too much right now, but I can tell you that the Overseas Pub and Grill will be a consistent feature in the series,” said O’Connell. “And if anyone wants a shot at being featured as an extra, they should reach out to me.”

Filming is expected to begin in July and HBO has set a tentative release date of April 1, 2018.

t’s always a matter of contention: is the bridge 7 miles or 6.8 miles?

Either way, after a little research and several interviews with numerous Keys residents and officials, the actual bridge run is closer to 8 miles. Maybe 9.

“When you do the math, it’s definitely closer to 8,” said two-time bridge run finisher Maggie Sayer.

“Once you account for the zigzagging along the way to the water stations, the circling back under the fire truck’s misting system, and hopping over people proposing on the hump of the bridge, the numbers just don’t add up.”

Charles Grimes, who works for a surveyor in town, decided to put it to the test last week around midnight.

“I started at the beginning of the bridge on foot and basically ‘ping ponged’ across both lanes a couple of times,” he said. “Once you account for the slope of the hump and my incredibly accurate measuring tools (my feet) it felt like 20 miles after several beers and side steps, but measures to exactly 7.8569 and a half miles.”

That’s more or less accurate, depending on who is doing the math.

After bringing it to the attention of bridge race officials, they said, “If the Cow Key Bridge Run can round down to a zero K, we can round up to 8, maybe 9 miles.

Spinach & feta turkey burgers This wildly popular recipe from bellyfull.net has been modified with some healthy substitutions. Instead of the called-for mayonnaise, substitute with a yogurt-based tzatziki; and leave the breadcrumbs out altogether. Serve on a bed of spinach, or some fresh quinoa.

• 1 1/4 pounds lean ground turkey • 1 1/2 cups packed fresh spinach, finely chopped • 4 ounces crumbled feta cheese • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper • 1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • tzatziki • cucumber slices • thin red onion slices

In a large bowl, mix together with your hands the turkey, chopped spinach, feta, garlic, black pepper, and olive oil until combined. Divide into 4 equal portions (approximately 4 inches in diameter, 1 inch thick.) Transfer to a plate and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours. Preheat a grill to medium. Oil the grates and grill burgers until no longer pink and juices run clear, about 5 minutes per side.

Serve on a bed of greens or whole grain and garnish with cucumber, and red onion.

THE WEEKLY GOES TO WASHINGTON A visit with U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo BRITT MYERS

T

ypically I catch up with our U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo in warmer conditions, but last Friday I had the opportunity to drop in (literally) on the young U.S. Representative during session at our nation’s capital.

As the temperatures outside a snow-covered D.C. were teetering below freezing, the bowels of the Capitol building were steaming with issues ranging from the environment to health care.

After several years of incessant political news streaming from every device, the personal experience was uniquely surreal. On my way to meet Congressman Curbelo, I bumped right into Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and her posse, who almost ran me over in a stampede of documents and leather messenger bags. Suddenly, the entire political process, which seemed like a four-year primetime drama on television, was happening live right in front of me like Jefferson Smith naively promoting the Boy Rangers.

Graciously, Curbelo stepped out of a Ways and Means Committee meeting to chat. Obviously weary from extended sessions (some lasting well beyond 4 a.m. on a given evening), the congressman quickly caught a third wind and said, “Sorry it took a moment to come out, but we were working on an important VA measure that affects our veterans’ ability to choose their doctors.”

During my brief tour, the Congressman led us through the Republican “Cloak Room” and stepped onto the House floor to cast a vote using what resembled a debit card being inserted into an electronic receiver. And later, from a private capitol-building balcony overlooking the Washington Monument, Curbelo briefed the Weekly on his most recent activity.

“This has been a busy week. Climate change continues to be a primary focus for me and has been a major point of emphasis this week,” said Curbelo, who recently co-sponsored the

1 Republican climate change resolution and has gained national notoriety for his bipartisan efforts. “And of course, health care is a major focus this week and I’m working to ensure the most vulnerable of Americans have access to health care without the burden of increased costs, fewer health options and the threat of fraud. And then today, we are working to do right by our veterans by offering them the ability to choose their doctors while granting our leaders the authority to hold the employees aat the VA accountable.”

Typically, we see Carlos during his constituent visits and can easily forget how chaotic and demanding his role is. Moreover, it was eye-opening to see just how far our congressman had come in such a short time. As one of the younger representatives, it was apparent that his bipartisan reputation (a rare trait in D.C.) has earned him respect on both sides of the aisles— and it would come as no surprise if the 37-year-old representative from the 26th District of Florida is destined for greater roles in D.C.

magine $9 to go to Miami. Locals can’t even get a ride from Key West to Stock Island for $9, let alone Miami. So what’s the catch? Just book first, not last, according to the new Go Buses transportation operating between Miami and Key West. Academy, which runs Go Buses, is a national transportation chain familiar with busing people up and down the Eastern Seaboard, and really can do it at a low cost. Residents who wrestle with the high prices of airfare and shuttles to the mainland now have a new alternative.

“We have a dynamic pricing system, and price is based on demand,” said Michael Curreri, northeast regional director who introduced Go Buses to the Chamber of Commerce last week. This means booking ahead of time can be cheaper than not just a tank of gas, but half a tank of gas. If booking last minute, higher fares will apply, depending on passenger demand “but it doesn’t really exceed $32,” said Curreri.

Since January, Go Buses’ introductory Keys route has been a daily shuttle between Miami’s Downtown and South Beach to the Caroline Street Bus parking lot. Already highly popular with tourists, it’s time locals take advantage of the fares ranging from $9 up to $32 to Miami and reverse the advantage.

“Soon we will implement phase two with a twice-daily bus service to Miami International and Fort Lauderdale airports stopping in Key Largo, Marathon and Key West,” said Bret Brittenum, general manager.

Again, imagine from $9 to $30 to the airport; it seems inconceivable but don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

Go Buses are new, clean, modernized deluxe motorcoaches. They offer ample leg room, WiFi, electrical outlets, reclining seats, restrooms and are ADA-compliant. The double decker bus can accommodate up to 84 people, with bonus features like tables downstairs or the best view of the Keys from the second story. Go Buses also offers frequent rider and loyalty programs.

If it saves money and gets residents where they want, then by all means, Go Bus.

imone Mullis holds a special place in her heart for Dockside, the bar on Sombrero Boulevard overlooking Boot Key Harbor. Not only was it her first job when she moved to the Keys five years ago, but it is also where she met her boyfriend. She and boyfriend Michael Payne co-own Marathon Ale House and are now taking on a new project with Dockside Boot Key Harbor.

“I couldn’t find a place to live and work when I moved down, and while looking for Italian food one night, random I know, my GPS brought me to Dockside,” she said. “I fell in love with the bar and Marathon.”

She says the bar brought her to her best friends like Randy Barnett from Fiddle Rock, her girlfriends, her

The answer is mid-April, preferably on April 20, said Mullis. She said Dockside will offer a full bar rounded out with great frozen drinks and will keep up to its previous name with some of

the best entertainment around.

She’s already booking entertainment.

The two are revamping the kitchen and hope to bring food to the bar in the next few months, but for now will focus on great drinks and music.

“I’ve been thinking about this place subconsciously for years,” she said. “Season came and I was worried we wouldn’t have enough time for it, but Michael knew we could do it, and we couldn’t pass up on the waterfront location.”

She said the off-the-beatenpath place will continue to cater to locals by keeping prices low, like they do at the Ale House.

She is also looking for reliable help, which she chalks up as one of the successes from Ale House, “We are a family, and we look out for each other and have each other’s backs. It’s nice to work with people who care for the business as if it’s their own.”

Philcox, Robinson win DAR essay contest The Florida Keys chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized seniors in high school who participated in the annual DAR High School Good Citizen and Essay Scholarship on March 11 at its monthly meeting in Marathon. Tessa Eggers of Key West was the $500 winner. She wrote about the challenges of democracy for the essay contest entitled, “Our American Heritage and our Responsibility for Preserving It: How do the combined actions of many good citizens keep our nation moving forward?”

In 2016, Eggers won the opportunity to participate in the Florida House of Representatives messenger program through an essay contest as well.

History, psychology and government are areas she would like to explore in college. Eggers is ranked in the top 10 percent of the senior class at Key West High School.

Marathon High School’s Rachel Philcox and Bailey Robinson of Coral Shores High School, who will attend the University of Florida this fall, were essay scholarship runners-up and received $100 each from the chapter. very culture, regardless of history, sees an emergence of young, talented artists who reflect the future more than the past and Cuba is no different. Here in South Florida, Cuban culture is already a well-known vein of creativity pulsating with excitement with its re-entry into the modern world.

With an opening on Thursday, April 6, the Studios of Key West will exhibit three top emerging artists from Cuba: The-Merger (a contemporary collective made up of Cuban artists Alain Pino Hernandez, Mario Miguel González Fernández, and Niels Molerio Luis), Mabel Poblet and Lisandra Ramirez. Each artist uses multimedia, iconographic imagery, and explores a new sense of individualism of the next Cuban generation. These artists prove they haven’t been isolated by their past but freed from it.

What’s refreshing about the works is they aren’t distinctly Cuban.

The artists do not limit themselves to their heritage, but explore more relatable, youthful images that speak to a broader sense of art and culture.

Mabel Poblet’s self-portraits are oddly aligned graphic images comprising multidimensional colorful layers. While the exact meaning of the work can elude the viewer like an escaped thought, the result is still a vibrant visual impact without being overly personal. Poblet is on the brink of worldwide stardom when she shows at the Venice Biennale this year.

Lisandra Ramirez’s Japanese-influenced kitty sculptures look more like a polished cartoon. Fun and sleek, her use of Pop iconography is lighthearted and inviting. The team The-Merger creates fantastical sculptures from a variety of materials, morphing well-known American images into surreal statues. These works celebrate individualism while keeping a keen eye on the whole world around them.

“The-Merger, Mabel Poblet and Lisandra Ramirez are all innovative artists and rising stars in a small country with 24,000 registered artists,” said Jed Dodds, executive director of The Studios. “Cuba has been an artistic powerhouse for hundreds of years and these artists demonstrate the reason why.”

The exhibit will run April 6-27 in the Sanger Gallery at The Studios of Key West, simultaneously with Margo Ellis at the XOJ Gallery and Karen Luknis’ “Repurposed Kids” in the Project Gallery.

T

he first phase is complete for the new nature center of the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges on Big Pine Key, but the “work is only just beginning,” one official says.

“Our vision for this nature center is a community gathering place for both locals and visitors where they can learn about the many special plants and animals that can only be found in the Florida Keys,” said Refuge Manager Daniel Clark. “We look forward to continuing to work with the community and our many partners to build this new nature center together,” said Clark.

The nature center was a part of a comprehensive plan for the Lower Keys refuges – National Key Deer Refuge, Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge, and Key West National Wildlife Refuge – and was approved in 2009. The environmental assessment for the nature center was completed in 2016.

The first part of the project began with the laying of the building pillars, parts of a sidewalk, parking for those with disabilities, and public bathroom foundation. The building was completed in February of this year at a cost of $210,180.

The new nature center will also include a nature oriented gift and bookstore, managed by the Friends and Volunteers of Refuges - Florida Keys (FAVOR), the nonprofit Friends group which supports the four Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges.

As much as $2 million in funding still needs to be identified for the exhibits inside the building, parking lot, public restroom, nature trail boardwalk, outside exhibits, interpretive panels, and landscaping.

The hope is to open the center in the summer of 2018.

“We plan to have various activities throughout this year where the community can get involved,” said park ranger Kristie Killam. “One easy way folks can start getting engaged is with exhibits. We want our exhibits to be interactive, fun, and focused on what makes our natural areas so unique. People can share what they would like to see and do or what they have seen at other nature centers that they liked,” said Killam.

DOMESTIC ABUSE SHELTER HIRES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

T

he Domestic Abuse Shelter, Inc. (DAS) Board of Directors announced the hiring of Sheryl Schwab as the agency’s new executive director.

“Sheryl is an experienced leader, having served in several of the state’s certified domestic violence centers,” said DAS Board Chair Jennifer Powell. “Her commitment to domestic violence survivors and their children is evident in her passion for our important work.”

Schwab spent 14 years at Women in Distress of Broward County, including as director of training and education, director of outreach services, and director of programs and services. Most recently, she served as director of victim services at Peace River Center.

Schwab has been involved statewide through her service on the board of directors of the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

“I am incredibly excited to begin working with the DAS Board of Directors, our community partners and survivors of domestic violence as we take the next steps together,” said Schwab. “I believe together we can create the social change necessary to make a lasting impact for survivors and their children and for our entire community.”

I

f the idea of running seven miles seems more trouble than it’s worth, but you still want to do something athletic, skip the 7 Mile Bridge Run and head for Cow Key the next day.

OK, skip the athletic part, too.

The Cow Key Channel Bridge, stretching about 300 feet between Key West and neighboring Stock Island, is among the shortest of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway’s 42 bridges. It’s also the site of a “Zero K race” set for Sunday, April 2, for people who want to compete in an “athletic” challenge without breaking a sweat.

“A lot of people say we’re ‘milking it’ with the Cow Key Channel Bridge Run, but it’s ‘udderly’ awesome,” quipped race co-producer David Sloan.

Hundreds of entrants typically take part in the annual race, including many wearing cow or bull costumes inspired by the name of the bridge. Some bring their dogs or other domestic animals, though actual bovines are not allowed.

Participants are encouraged to move at their own pace and clock their own times as they travel the “grueling” distance. Separate heats are staged for competitors with pets, relay teams and people vying to post the slowest possible time.

The Cow Key Channel event is scheduled the day after the Middle Keys’ annual 7 Mile Bridge Run. Entrants in the 2017 race are to gather beginning at 10 a.m. in the “costumed cow corral” at the entrance to Key West for “grazing,” final registration, race packet pickup and costume judging.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 11:45 a.m., followed at noon by the ringing of cowbells to start the stampede across the bridge.

A post-race party is planned at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, 5210 College Road.

Attractions include live music, food trucks, libations and awards presentations in multiple categories.

RUNNING THE BRIDGE

Parking, party details are different in 2017

H

undreds of runners will take to the 7 Mile Bridge in Marathon on the morning of Saturday, April 1 as part of a decades-long tradition that has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity.

There’s one important element that’s different this year — the parking and buses.

As usual, the bridge will be closed beginning at 6:45 a.m. in both directions. Instead of parking and congregating at Knights Key, this year race participants will meet at Stanley Switlik Elementary School at 33rd Street and Overseas Highway. There will be limited free parking. Starting at 5:30 a.m. school buses will transport the runners to the race start. The final bus for racers will leave the school at 6:40 a.m.

The race begins at 7:20 a.m. at the northeast end of the bridge, in Marathon. It ends at Veterans Park at the southwest end where school buses will transport runners back to the parking zone for the race party — food, beverages and music . The bridge is scheduled to reopen at 9 a.m., and officials say it could take some time to clear traffic in the area.

Packet pickup is on Friday, March 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Marathon. Race officials say you’ll get your packet faster on Friday if you wait till after the 6 o’clock rush. On the morning of the race, Saturday, April 1, packet pickup will be from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. at Switlik Elementary School. Runners must have identification that matches registration, and no one will be allowed to pick up others’ race packet.

The Marathon Runners Club’s 7 Mile Bridge Run began as a dedication run in 1982, celebrating the opening of the “new” 7 Mile Bridge.

Money raised from this event is donated to the youth of the Middle Keys, both at the local schools as well as other youth groups which promote athletically oriented activities. The Marathon Runners Club has donated more than $500,000 since the run began in 1982.

ounders Park will host the 26th annual Island Fest on Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2. Islamorada’s first spring festival kicks off at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. both days.

The two-day event features some 100 artists with works that include painting, crafts, sculpture and jewelry. Ten artists will also create original plein air works onsite. This year, Islamorada’s Jason Barth is featured as the event’s poster artist.

Along with arts and crafts, kids will have a chance to paint a life-sized dolphin statue, build sand castles, and compete in a hula hoop contest. On Saturday, there will also be a contest to create the word “sunset” out of colorful sand provided.

Island Fest will also see the return of the All-American Road Vintage Cruisers car show. For a sixth year, the show will exhibit unique and antique cars, trucks, motorcycles and rat rods.

Awards will be presented for Coolest Cruiser, Raddest Rod, KeyZ Rider, Longest Haul, Big Kahuna, Funkiest Foreign, Best of Show and People’s Choice. Entries are still welcome; those interested may contact the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce.

The festival will feature music of all genres. Among musical performances scheduled are Tim Charron, Seranation, David Feder, the DelSol Band, and Island Vibes.

Crowd favorite Pit Bull of Blues of Miami will conclude the Saturday lineup of musicians.

Also returning to the event is the “What Floats Your Boat” homemade-boat race. The race is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The competition pits contestants and their vessels against one another for a handful of silly honors, including the Yachtiest Award, Thriftiest Award, Anchor Award, Krazy Krewe Award, Sink and Swim Award, and Lucky Ducky Admiral Award.

Festival admission is free and on-site parking is available for a $5 donation. Events will proceed regardless of weather. More information is available from the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce at 305-664-4503.

State parks host Native Plant Day John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park will host Native Plant Day as an Earth Day event on Saturday, April 1.

Nursery volunteers from sister park Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock will have information booths where visitors can learn the importance of native plants, how to propagate and care for native plants, and how to plant butterfly gardens. Native plants, raised by the nursery volunteers, will be given away for planting at Keys’ residences.

At 9:30 a.m., Susan Kolterman will share her knowledge of butterflies and the native Keys plants that they prefer.

Activities for children will be available, including a special nature walk for children accompanied by an adult at 10:30 a.m. Another 45-minute nature walk sets off at 11:30 a.m., as well as two butterfly garden tours at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

azy Days bartender Gary moved from Pine Island to Marathon three years ago and has been serving up drinks for the past six months at the waterfront restaurant. “I love the people and you can’t beat this view,” he said gesturing to the open-water view. He used to visit a lot when one day he just said it was time to move south.

The namesake Lazy Day is made with Malibu and Bacardi Gold rums with pineapple and orange juice and a splash of cranberry. “It’s our signature cocktail, considering it’s the same colors as the sunset that can be seen from the dining room tables overlooking the ocean,” he said.

He said, of course, the drink goes best with the Lazy Days style hogfish. Encrusted with bread crumbs, sautéed and topped with fresh diced tomatoes, scallions, shredded parmesan cheese and topped with key lime butter, he said the lazy way is the best way.

When he isn’t working, he is hitting the beach or riding his bicycle.

Islamorada Traffic — a solution in (or out of) sight?

Village, FDOT won’t confirm ‘underground’ rumors…

A

nyone familiar with driving in the Keys during the height of season knows what a frustrating experience it can be.

Especially in the area from the Snake Creek Bridge through Upper Matecumbe Key, U.S.1 often resembles a linear parking facility more than an actual highway. The Village of Islamorada and the Florida Department of Transportation have struggled for years to find a solution, but have always been stymied by myriad factors, including the federal government’s reluctance to do anything about the Snake Creek drawbridge.

The drawbridge, under federal rule, must open once an hour to allow boat traffic through Snake Creek.

This leaves the automobile traffic backed up, often for miles in both directions. Everyone acknowledges that this is a huge problem; no one has been able to come up with a working solution… until now.

Documents obtained by The Weekly, allegedly drafted by a Federal Aviation Administration administrator named April Fulsdaye, reveal that the FAA is weighing in on this issue.

Apparently, Ms. Fulsdaye was caught in the disharmonic convergence that was the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market, combined with the opening and closing of the aforementioned drawbridge. She missed her flight out of Miami. And she was not happy.

According to anonymous sources, Ms. Fulsdaye showed up in her office the next Tuesday, ranting about how traffic mismanagement had caused her to miss her flight, and how the FAA could not stand by while travelers’ air rights were being infringed upon. She placed calls to ranking officials in the federal Department of Transportation, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Coast Guard, and anyone else who claimed federal jurisdiction over the Islamorada area.

And here is what we found that came out of those conversations.

Action Item 1: the Snake Creek Tunnel. One of the first major infrastructure projects under the Trump Administration would be the construction of a “Big Dig”-style tunnel beginning at Coral Shores High School and ending at Mile Marker 80, the southwestern tip of Upper Matecumbe Key. The tunnel would bypass

the drawbridge, Founders Park, and everything on Windley Key and Upper Matecumbe. It would ensure the flow of traffic even through events and the typical congestion of that area during season.

Action Item 2: the rewriting of federal and local regulations to maintain a better traffic flow during season.

Additionally, the feds would draft emergency legislation banning large events like the Nautical Flea Market and BayJam from happening during peak season months. The proposed legislation would limit any Islamorada event to the months of August through November, with the exception of Labor Day, Columbus Day, and Fantasy Fest weekends.

Action Item 3: upon completion of the Snake Creek Tunnel, the emergency legislation would expire. The drawbridge would resume daytime openings, but under the two-hour intervals as above with a 10-minute maximum open time. Furthermore, the drawbridge would be scheduled for eventual retirement. As the bridge approaches the end of its functional lifespan, no funds will be committed to its repair.

It will be locked in the upright position like the Boot Key drawbridge in Marathon.

Expect to hear the blowback from local officials as the Snake Creek Tunnel project nears its construction start date of April 1, 2018.

HIRING FOR THE FOLLOWING POSITIONS: Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center - Program Director The Domestic Abuse Shelter (DAS), a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, has an opening for a full-time Program Director. Candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. Responsibilities include the day to day supervision and management of DAS residential facilities and outreach programs.

The Program Director possesses at minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence, or high school/equivalency and four years providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence. Two years of successful supervisory experience in a domestic violence and/or sexual assault agency is required. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups, proven experience training staff, and excellent organizational skills. Those who identify as survivors of violence or abuse are encouraged to apply.
