KEY WEST WEEKLY / MARCH 31, 2017 HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

April Fools’ Day is a time to cherish and appreciate loved ones and friends - Hah, who are we kidding?! Them, that’s who! Nothing is better than a little Saran Wrap over the toilet bowl to let someone know you love them. Turn off the AC and watch your husband panic over the age of the compressor or hand a friend a fake winning lottery ticket (not that any of those things have ever happened, ever.) When playing a prank, whom should we turn to—the experts of course. So we asked famous pranksters ...

What do you do on April Fool’s Day? “The trick is, meow, to see, meow, how many, meow, times you can say, meow,” said Officer Foster, “Not like I am jumpin’ around all nimbly bimbly from tree to treeIt’s just, meow, the Cat Game.” Meow.

“Build elaborate sets and make strangers look ridiculous” chuckled Allen Funt, “then when they had no idea what was going on, jump out and yell, ‘You’re on Candid Camera!’ Oh it just scared the bejeezus out of them. Great fun.”

“I love making celebrities look goofy,” laughed Ashton Kutcher. “Put them in a grocery store or something and they have no idea what to do. Most of them don’t own a wallet. Then point and yell ‘punked!’ They have no idea what is happening.”

“It’s so easy to make people laugh in the US and A,” said joker Borat, “It is custom to eat cheese made from breast of wife, and oh, the you Americans make such funny faces when you eat it.”

“I used to call Cesar Romero in the middle of the night — who always thought he was the better Joker,” said Jack Nicholson, “And I would just start laughing and laughing. He would threaten to call the police, and I would say ‘Why don’t you call Batman! Hahahahaha.’ Then I would chase Catwoman around.”

ONE MAN, ONE PHRASE, ONE HUMAN FAMILY HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

T

15 questions with artist J.T. Thompson

here is a reason it’s called a catch phrase, because it really does catch everyone’s attention and sometimes, everyone’s heart. Artist J.T. Thompson did just that when he put the words “All People Are Created Equal Members of One Human Family” on a bumper sticker and helped Key West shine as the city of love. Born in 1954 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Thompson found Key West 38 years ago by way of Denver and Venice Beach. A graphic designer, he took over Solares Hill Design Group Key West with best friend Bob Beckwith and never looked back. Thompson has not just been an example of tolerance and equality in Key West, but also of activism and motivation. Since 2000, Thompson has given away millions of stickers proclaiming “One Human Family” – the city and the county’s official motto. Equality Florida just named Thompson the 2017 Voice for Equality honoree. He is a proud Captain in the Conch Republic Navy, Honorary Lesbian with the IWFFL, Monsignor in the Sisters of Diversity, President of the Key West Wreckers, and designer of five Fantasy Fest posters. Awards? “The only one that matters is karma,” said Thompson.

“The ‘One Human Family’ movement has reinforced my faith in humanity. Millions of people understand we are all a part of each other, with more every day.”

8. What are your nerdiest passions? Antiquities, archaeology, physics, inventions, psychology, and anthropology.

9. If you could take three items on a deserted island, what would you choose? I’d take my doggie buddy Beau, my human buddy Gregory, and my Dad — he’s my hero. Between the three of us, we’d make everything we need. 10. If invisible, what would you do in Key West? I would wish I was back to being visible. Activists have to be visible. 11. What was your first thought this morning? How can anyone be up and functional at this hour? 12. Favorite guilty pleasure? Spending an hour with my best friend. 13. What’s the most memorable reaction to “One Human Family” campaign? Amy Culver took OHF to the Datoga Tribe in the middle of the Sahara Desert — and changed their entire world view from being totally separate from everyone, to being geographically isolated but a part of humanity. And an 11-year-old in Richmond who reported that she met with 100 classmates individually and gave them each a sticker and an explanation of human unity, then finished by saying that I should not worry about racism, because she was “going to fix that.” Other inspiring letters come from almost every country, from Scotland to the South Pole!

1. Full Name? James George Thompson. 2. Worst nickname? “Metal Mouth” as a teen with steel caps and braces! The best nickname, though, is “Ensign Walrus” as helmsman onboard the Schooner Western Union. 3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life; why? Eleanor Roosevelt, who singlehandedly managed to author and achieve unanimous ratification of the United Nations’ (an all-boys club in 1948) Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I would want to know how she sees the world today and how she’d effect progressive changes now.

4. If you won the lottery, what extravagant thing would you do? Pay off the homeless facility and animal shelters’ debt. 5. What movie or music would people be surprised you love? “The Great Race,” “Music Man,” “Ragtime,” “The Money Pit,” “Taxi Zum Klo.” 6. If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? A weather bubble over the Keys that magically keeps dangerous storms away. 7. Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? He’d be a cartoon mashup of Dudley Do-Right, Snidely Whiplash and Dirk Digler.

14. What fantasy dream job would you have if you could? I have it. I love my craft and the talented artists that I get to collaborate with. Here, we all can live our own unique lives together; being as eccentric, colorful and spirited as we want — paying it forward and making each day its own fantasy come true in the place that’s as close to paradise as an island can be. 15. Funniest Key West sighting or story? A tame one: a local hairdresser the morning after The Copa’s Prom Night, in a soiled poodle skirt, a spike heel in hand (one missing), a wig under her arm, and makeup (that was never meant to see daylight) smeared into telling streaks ... just walking home in Old Town with a grin from ear to ear.

ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUP FIGHTS FOR MOSQUITO SANCTUARY 32-acre preserve would cost $12 million Weekly Staff Report

“H

ow is the life of a deer more endearing than that of a mosquito?” That’s what Nancy Bitzman, chairman of LCILB (Love Comes in Little Bites) is asking Monroe County Commissioners. LCILB, which calls itself a for-profit animal rights group, has been fighting against “mosquito cruelty” in coastal areas since 1989. Currently, the group is seeking a $12 million “mosquito sanctuary” along 32 acres centered between Rockland Key and Big Coppitt. “The Florida Keys are guilty of the mass genocide of billions of innocent creatures,” said Bitzman. “What we are proposing is no different than the Key deer sanctuary on Big Pine.” In addition, the LCILB, based out of Berkley California, has proposed a $4 million dollar mosquito protection net that would cover the proposed land area, along with demands that limit air, auto and foot traffic to the area.

Let them bite you! Give their children a chance!

However, many argue the mosquito sanctuary will cost millions in wasted tax dollars and is a direct conflict with the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, which currently works to eliminate mosquitos in the county. “First I had to fight against GMOs in my back yard,” said Key Haven resident Jim Wilson, where GMOs were literally proposed for his back yard. “And now these guys want to place a mosquito factory just above our neighborhood. What’s next? An iguana sanctuary?” LCILB has discussed a phase two to go along with the mosquito proposal, which would include added rights for iguanas. Over the last decade, the group has successfully imposed mosquito, rat, snake and roach sanctuaries in areas such as Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, Trenton in New Jersey, and Flint, Michigan. “We have to be sensitive to their demands and take this very seriously,” said Monroe County Mayor George Neugent. “We are currently reviewing their proposal and trying to find a compromise suitable for both sides.”

Monroe County Commissioners have until July of 2017 to counter the group’s proposal. After that time, Bitzman says the county will be subject to severe legal penalties and national scrutiny. “I always hear people brag about ‘one human family’ in Key West,” said Bitzman. “Well, I guess the mosquitos didn’t get the memo. How would the Keys look to the rest of the world if everyone knew they slaughtered innocent creatures?” Currently, Mayor Neugent believes a compromise for the sanctuary can be made for a fraction of the cost, with the mosquito sanctuary located just above Key Haven. “I believe this can be a burden shared by Key Haven residents,” said Neugent. “After all, they brought this on us by placing national attention on the GMO opposition.”

MONROE COUNTY

KEY WEST WEEKLY / MARCH 31, 2017

TDC explores new marketing initiatives Agency seeks to attract new visitors Weekly Staff Report

$40 million is a lot of money. Every year, the Tourist Development Council collects that in bed tax revenues from Florida Keys visitors. Most would say the money is spent wisely and drives the economic engine of the county. Others think it could be spent better. At a meeting on Tuesday, the TDC voted to try some new marketing campaigns to improve the visitor experience while silencing some of their harsher critics. Below is a short synopsis of the four microplans:

• CORPORATE SUBSIDIES. Big corporations like Payless shoe store, Sears, and Kmart are on the brink of bankruptcy and as more of the big retailers close, they are leaving gaping holes in the Keys’ commercial infrastructure. Big Pine resident Cleophis Rankdale has been a proud member of the Radio Shack battery club for years. “Those tourists fund Fantasy Fest,” said Rankdale. “And my remote control needs weird batteries.” The subsidy amounts are still being worked out, but are reportedly generous. “People WANT to buy those useless beach umbrella screws for the sand, and there’s just nowhere else that sells them except Kmart,” said the same source. “You can’t get that from the artisans at Mallory Square.”

• New law enforcement uniforms. In an effort to seem less forbidding to carefree visitors on vacation, the TDC has approached the Monroe County sheriff’s office regarding new uniforms: Short shorts, in the traditional forest green, paired with Vibram Five Finger toe shoes for better mobility. “I’m just worried that my badge is going to tear the thin fabric of our dri-FIT® racer-back tanks when I try to pin it on,” said MCSO Captain Jonathan Crane. “And where am I going to put my gun?”

• Endorsements. To reach a younger and more hip audience, the TDC has signed an endorsement deal with Monroe County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy, 81, who has agreed to push the Keys on her Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat accounts (#NoKeysHaters). She will also create a TDC-funded video at the Southernmost Point to the tune of Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy.” “I think the first person I will call is Miami rapper Pit Bull,” Sylvia said. “If anyone has his MySpace page, beeper number, or street address so I can write him a letter, I would appreciate it if they passed it along.” • More traffic. TDC officials worry that some members of groups traveling to the Keys are missing “the good stuff.” And, so, they are planning a campaign to suggest to visitors traveling as a group that each person bring their own car, or Segway, provided it can achieve speeds of 30 mph. “Some people worry this will create extra traffic,” said Marathon Councilman John Bartus, who uses his “down time” in traffic to beat his high score at Candy Crush. Bartus has written to the software game developers, encouraging them to add a feature wherein users can tag their location — i.e., #StuckOnOverseas. “Check-ins are good,” said Bartus.

BRIEFLY City offers solution to Triangle Traffic After five years of continuous traffic jams, accidents and aggressive driving incidents surrounding the northern “triangle” roadway leading in and out of Key West, City officials recently announced a handful of proposed solutions to one the community’s most talked about nuisances. Recently, city officials discovered the lights along Cross Street and MacDonald Avenue, both under county jurisdiction, were not synchronized with city stoplights. “I think this was something Sunny McCoy did as a joke back in the ’80s,” said Commissioner Jimmy Weekley. “Problem is, we all forgot about it.” However, the city has proposed several ideas that could provide immediate relief to commuters, while saving thousands in tax dollars. At an upcoming April 11 meeting, the city will review an idea proposed by local resident Jay Hall. “I live in the Golf Club and I’ve always grabbed my newspaper from those guys in the middle of the triangle,” said Hall. “And then it hit me. We could have those guys operate the red lights as they sell newspapers.” If passed, City Manager Jim Scholl says, the city could consider a similar “no nonsense” approach to other issues facing the city such as constructing underground tunnels or overhead bridges to reduce the danger of the crosswalks. City officials anticipate a response from the state Department of Transportation in two years, or as soon as 18 months. Tourists to sit on Marathon Council For the first time, two Marathon City Council seats will be filled by tourists. Under a change scheduled for a vote this week, Keys visitors staying at least five nights in Marathon will be eligible to seek one of the two two-year “guest” seats on the city council. “Let’s face it,” said Councilman John Bartus, who proposed the change, “we’re spending their money. It’s only right that they get a seat at the table.” The city council is expected to approve the change at its April 1 meeting, scheduled to begin when Freddie Bye takes his first break at the Brass Monkey. The measure will require the removal of two current council members. That removal, under the plan, would follow the same procedure as the recently enacted procedure for choosing a mayor.

HBO TO FILM ‘TRUE DETECTIVE, SEASON 3’ IN KEY WEST Crime drama will feature top actors, iconic scenery Weekly Staff Report

E

arlier this week, HBO thrilled subscribers who have been waiting with bated breath for information regarding the third installment of the popular crime anthology, “True Detective.” The series will be set in Key West, and the network has confirmed that a top-name cast of Liam Hemsworth and Adam Driver will star in the series, with rumors circulating that Jennifer Lawrence could sign on soon. “We wrote season 3 with Key West in mind,” said series creator Nic Piz-

zolatto. “The island’s natural beauty is a perfect juxtaposition to the city’s seedy underbelly.” Pizzolatto wouldn’t give many details, except to say the story would take place during the Mariel Boat Lift and would be mostly shot around Stock Island, with other scenes filmed in Old Town Key West and Havana, Cuba. The critically acclaimed first season, starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as a pair of homicide cops investigating

the murder of a young prostitute in Louisiana, was nominated for several Emmy Awards for acting, writing and direction. The sophomore season, starring Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams and set in California, was met with less than favorable reviews. HBO President of Entertainment Sue Naegle said the success of the Netflix original series “Bloodline” helped green-light the project. “We wanted something salty. A show people could relate too, but one

that would also allow our viewers to lose themselves in,” she said. “Early ’80s Key West will provide us with the backdrop we need to pull off an ambitious show like ‘(True) Detective.’” Naegle said the show will have a $40 million production budget for the eight episodes and went on to say producers are already having a tough time securing housing for the show’s cast and crew. The Weekly also confirmed that Stock Island business owner and resident Bobby Mongelli has been squiring around location scouts, while consulting with casting directors on possible extras for the show. “I can’t reveal too much right now, but I can tell you that Hogfish Bar and Grill will be a consistent feature in the series,” said Mongelli. “And if anyone wants a shot at being featured as an extra, they should reach out to me.” Filming is expected to begin in July and HBO has set a tentative release date of April 1, 2018.

What’s in a name? Truman Amphitheater choices down to two Weekly Staff Report he long awaited Truman Amphitheater, which recently endured one final attempt to undo 20 years of planning, is finally coming to fruition within the next year. The only problem? The $4 million structure is still without an official name. “We initially hoped that Jimmy Buffett or his brand would hang their naming rights on the theater,” said Key West Mayor Craig Cates. “But recently, we’ve had a strong push from the community and the Coconut Castaways (trop rock legend Howard Livingston’s fan club) to attach a local name to the facility.” On Tuesday, after hours of deliberation, the Truman Waterfront Advisory Board proposed two localized names for the City Commission to vote on at an upcoming April 11 meeting. There, the commission will choose between Howard Livingston and the MM 24 Band or the Doerfels as the namesake for the new amphitheater. (One rogue commissioner voted for the “Oscar-Cat man, Raven and Silver Guy Wonder Emporium.”) “We sought community input and these were the overwhelming choices,” said one advisory board member, who asked to remain anonymous. “Howard has a huge fan following, but we also recognize the impact the Doerfels have had on our community.” Already, proponents of Howard Livingston are pointing to a recent name change surrounding the Doerfels. The band, which was previously made up of 12 siblings, recently

T

regrouped with five of the brothers forming “Fuel on Fire.” “I think we can all agree the Doerfels changed the way we listened to music here in the Keys,” said Key West Mayor Craig Cates. “But let’s be honest, kids grow up and they lost the ‘cute factor’ that we all loved.” Cates went on to say he is favoring Howard Livingston and that his relationship with the singer songwriter is in no way influencing his decision. “Sure, Howard and I are best friends,” said Cates. “I spend time at his house. We go out to eat. He slept on my couch on Christmas Eve. But that has nothing to do with my decision to support naming the amphitheater after him. We built this city on trop rock. And the Howard Livingston Memorial Amphitheater is a great way to honor my late friend.” When asked what he thought about the proposed name, Livingston seemed perplexed when emailing back to the Weekly. “I just don’t get the ‘Memorial’ part,” wrote Livingston. “For some reason Craig thought I was lost at sea back in February. Can someone please tell him I’m still alive?” However, at least some City Commission members were not as sold on Livingston. “I think we need to take a step back and review all of our options,” said Commissioner Margaret Romero. “We have a lot of local names that were not considered, such as Bobby Nesbitt, Larry Baeder and Lionel Richie — and I would hate to see back room politics influence this important decision.”

APRIL Merger of the century Keys arts community goes corporate

Weekly Staff Report ey West Art and Historical Society, The Studios of Key West and Key West Theater will soon announce a historic merger. Beginning April 1, all three organizations will become one. Instead of vying for public funding and competing for famous artists and musicians, the three colossal art organizations will equally share membership and fund-raising efforts. The re-branding of each organization will take place immediately with each entity departing from their recognized acronyms--KWAHS , TSKW and KWT. The new singular organization will be referred to as ArtMart of Key West and the new logo will simply be ArtMart with the tag “Save Money, LIve Better.” “We feel this is the key to commercializing and capitalizing on art in Key West,” said Jed Dodds, director of The Studios Of Key West. “I like to think of it as Key West moving away from the mom and pop/non-profit mentality and into a WalMart era of the arts here at home.” Dodds saw no connection between the moniker ArtMart and WalMart and claims it came to him in a dream sequence.

K

Michael Gieda (pronounced Geeda, folks), director of The Key West Art and Historical Society, echoed the need for one art conglomerate on the island. “They [TSKW] have always produced a nice glossy catalog and they have a pretty cool bookstore,” said Gieda. “But we really need some jazz hands to make art pop around here.” Gieda demonstrated with a little toe tap and “Ta Da” move. Among those ideas, Gieda says he has brokered a deal with Starbucks, which will have satellite locations in each facility, along with corporate sponsorships such as CVS, Radio Shack and Payless Shoes. Gieda went on to say that he has never worked very well with Dodds, but he does think that Elena Devers is “whatever.” And while all three organizations have been fairly amicable over time, the Key West Theater’s Kelly Norman was less enthusiastic about the merger. “I have to deal with Michael Marrero on a daily basis,” said Norman. “Now you throw Gieda and Dodds into the mix and you have the holy trinity of art divas. It’s just a lot for one woman to handle.”

BRIEFLY ‘Turtle Highway’ plan before Congress An eight-lane elevated toll road that would run from Key Largo to Key West is part of a federal infrastructure plan expected to be introduced soon in Congress. The route, to be called the Turtle Highway, is projected to cost $110 billion. It would be built using funds from the Mexican government’s repayment to the U.S. for building a wall along the border between the two countries.

The superhighway is part of a massive infrastructure proposal scheduled to be introduced on April 1 by the White House. (Thank you, Trump.) The existing route, U.S. 1, would be generally limited to use by Keys residents, although visitors would be allowed to use it with an “Iguana Pass,” obtained at service plazas along the elevated route. Those passes are expected to cost $500 per year.

T

his Miami favorite is bringing back its Latin-Rock-Cumbia mash-up to The Green Parrot. Grammy-nominated Locos por Juana has two shows (5:30 and 10 p.m.) on Friday and Saturday, March 31 and April 1. Nominated in 2009 in the Grammy category of Best Latin Rock or Alternative album for their album “La Verdad,” Locos por Juana has finally gotten its due from the awards gods. In 2016, it released “Caribe.” In recent years, the band has shifted to focus more on Jamaican-style reggae and incorporated some dub influences. “The new full-length album not only proffers novel sound for the band, but it also marks the first time LPJ has chosen to go bilingual – with most of the tracks switching indiscriminately between Spanish and English,” according to topshelfreggae.com.

Locos for Juana, which roughly translates to “Crazy About Jane,” delight in genre-crossing. With members hailing from Colombia, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico, the band mixes ska, rock, salsa, Jamaican dancehall, Cumbia, reggae, hiphop, funk and electronica — sometimes in one song. What makes their sound work is their wild energy; they hurl themselves into their music with such passion and excitement that they pull you along with them. Billboard Magazine tagged their album one of this year’s Hot Picks. With strong ties to Suenalo and the Spam Allstars, two other Miami groups well known to Parrot patrons for past steamy performances, Locos por Juana is something only Miami could cook up, creating a sound that reflects the diverse mixture of cultures and genres that Miami has to offer. The result is a highly charged mix of rhythms irresistible to dancers. — Contributed

ary Ellen’s Bar and Restaurant bartender Alina has been serving cocktails at the new restaurant since it opened three months ago. She moved here four years ago, and stays for the weather and the people. Her favorite thing on the tap is Mary Ellen’s Old Fashion and the Moscow Mule. Both are made in house, and served on the tap along with their specialty beers. “It’s straight whiskey and muddled fruits,” she said. “It’s really popular.” Her favorite part about working at Mary Ellen’s is the people who come in. “It’s 85-90 percent locals and the people who live here are so nice, so it works out well,” she said. Her go-to items on the menu include the sweet potato waffle fries and the grilled cheese sandwiches. The Florence is three cheeses, a blend of cheddar, Havarti, and Monterey Jack on Texas toast. She personally adds a little ham to the lineup for the most perfect lunch entrée. When she isn’t working at Mary Ellen’s, she also serves tables at another local restaurant, plays volleyball, sews, and has impeccable taste in clothing. magine $9 to go to Miami. Locals can’t even get a ride from Key West to Stock Island for $9, let alone Miami. So what’s the catch? Just book first, not last, according to the new Go Buses transportation operating between Miami and Key West. Academy, which runs Go Buses, is a national transportation chain familiar with busing people up and down the Eastern Seaboard, and really can do it at a low cost. Residents who wrestle with the high prices of airfare and shuttles to the mainland now have a new alternative. “We have a dynamic pricing system, and price is based on demand,” said Michael Curreri, northeast regional director who introduced Go Buses to the Chamber of Commerce last week. This means booking ahead of time can be cheaper than not just a tank of gas, but half a tank of gas. If booking last minute, higher fares will apply, depending on passenger demand “but it doesn’t really exceed $32,” said Curreri. Since January, Go Buses’ introductory Keys route has been a daily shuttle between Miami’s Downtown and South Beach to the Caroline Street Bus parking lot. Already highly popular with tourists, it’s time locals take advantage of the fares ranging from $9 up to $32 to Miami and reverse the advantage. “Soon we will implement phase two with a twice-daily bus service to Miami International and Fort Lauderdale airports stopping in Key Largo, Marathon and Key West,” said Bret Brittenum, general manager. Again, imagine from $9 to $30 to the airport; it seems inconceivable but don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

Go Buses are new, clean, modernized deluxe motorcoaches. They offer ample leg room, WiFi, electrical outlets, reclining seats, restrooms and are ADA-compliant. The double decker bus can accommodate up to 84 people, with bonus features like tables downstairs or the best view of the Keys from the second story. Go Buses also offers frequent rider and loyalty programs. If it saves money and gets residents where they want, then by all means, Go Bus. Visit www.GoBuses.com or call 1-877-249-4440

Time for a cat app All in one app for the Hemingway House and Cats HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

T

he Hemingway House currently has 53 feline residents and yes, there is an app for getting to know each and every one of them. Locals have always had a nonchalant pride when describing their six-toed resident counterparts. And now, beloved Uncle Ernest’s kitties have been chronicled with the Hemingway Cats app. With a swipe of the screen, locals and tourists alike can identify all of Hemingway’s toms and learn all about them. “It started with the launch of the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum app last November,” said Teresa Willis, who worked with the Hemingway House to create an impressive comprehensive self-guided tour app of the house and grounds. The app is available in five languages and helps answer any and all questions about the history of Hemingway and his famous abode. Willis’ Blue Turtle Gallery is steps away from the Hemingway house, where she runs her website and app-development business, and sells her fine art. “We have been tracking the app and realized the cat feature was the most popular,” continued Willis, who has watched the Hemingway House app take off. “So the Hemingway Cats app has been a fun offshoot. We had a great time putting it together because the cats are so pretty and different.” The spin-off app has a photo and information about each of the Hemingway felines, along with Hemingway’s own history with the cats. The app lets a user choose cats by color — orange, calico, etc. — then scroll through the pictures and find the feline’s information. Us-

ers learn the cat’s name, birthdate, and what part of the Hemingway grounds the tom prefers to roam. “They are territorial and each lives on a different part of the property,” said Willis. Keep houseguests occupied or send children on a mission to learn about the best kept cats in the world — either way, both apps are fun and informative. The apps are available on Google Play and in iTunes. The comprehensive Ernest Hemingway House & Museum App retails for $5.99 and the individual Hemingway Cats app is $2.99.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I’m heavily involved in the Key West High School wrestling team and television/film production. Both of these are passions of mine as I find them to be fun and challenging.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: To vote for Nitti and Krzystof Madro’s movie for Audience Choice, visit pbcgov.com/filmfestival. The movie is about an unlucky man who discovers the world around him through the glass of a magic camera lens.)

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Television/film production has not only helped me find my passion, but it has also helped me by teaching me the important fundamentals of filmmaking and storytelling. What is your favorite social medium and why? Whom do you follow? Snapchat. It’s how I communicate with all my friends as well as keep up to date with new trends. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? I believe one of the biggest challenges our community is facing is the changes in our environment. Our community relies on tourism, and if the reef continues to decline and the tides continue to rise, our community suffers. The easiest way to combat this is through education and effort. We need to work together to preserve the natural beauty that is our home. What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend NYU, where I will study undergraduate film and television.

very culture, regardless of history, sees an emergence of young, talented artists who reflect the future more than the past and Cuba is no different. Here in South Florida, Cuban culture is already a well-known vein of creativity pulsating with excitement with its re-entry into the modern world. With an opening on Thursday, April 6, the Studios of Key West will exhibit three top emerging artists from Cuba: The-Merger (a contemporary collective made up of Cuban artists Alain Pino Hernandez, Mario Miguel González Fernández, and Niels Molerio Luis), Mabel Poblet and Lisandra Ramirez. Each artist uses multimedia, iconographic imagery, and explores a new sense of individualism of the next Cuban generation. These artists prove they haven’t been isolated by their past but freed from it. What’s refreshing about the works is they aren’t distinctly Cuban. The artists do not limit themselves to their heritage, but explore more relatable, youthful images that speak to a broader sense of art and culture. Mabel Poblet’s self-portraits are oddly aligned graphic images comprising multidimensional colorful layers. While the exact meaning of the work can elude the viewer like an escaped thought, the result is still a vibrant visual impact without being overly personal. Poblet is on the brink of worldwide stardom when she shows at the Venice Biennale this year. Lisandra Ramirez’s Japanese-influenced kitty sculptures look more like a polished cartoon. Fun and sleek, her use of Pop iconography is lighthearted and inviting. The team The-Merger creates fantastical sculptures from a variety of materials, morphing well-known American images into surreal statues. These works celebrate individualism while keeping a keen eye on the whole world around them. “The-Merger, Mabel Poblet and Lisandra Ramirez are all innovative artists and rising stars in a small country with 24,000 registered artists,” said Jed Dodds, executive director of The Studios. “Cuba has been an artistic powerhouse for hundreds of years and these artists demonstrate the reason why.” The exhibit will run April 6-27 in the Sanger Gallery at The Studios of Key West, simultaneously with Margo Ellis at the XOJ Gallery and Karen Luknis’ “Repurposed Kids” in the Project Gallery.

Two inventors and a president walk into the woods…

nnovation versus business versus government: this is the basis of the play “Camping with Henry and Tom” now playing at the Red Barn Theatre. It’s a thoughtful discussion about core American issues among three iconic figures, Henry Ford, President Warren G. Harding and Thomas Edison. The result is a witty, funny and thoughtful look at American ideals without being irreverent. What if three American icons crashed their Model T and were stuck for hours alone in the woods? Playwright Mark St. Germain took the premise from an actual camping trip made by the two inventors, added the

president and used it to create the unlikely scenario. Isolated and alone, it was inevitable they would tackle issues such as death, money and politics. Michael McCabe delivers a sensitive and unambitious President Harding, who cannot help the dying deer the Model T ran into - “I don’t have enough killer instinct” - but acts as protector against outside forces, the wolves. It’s an ironic portrayal of the government as the hapless, unwilling

participant in important matters. Barry Tarallo seems flawless as the ruthless businessman Henry Ford as he says, “We are machines on 10 toes.” Ford and the president’s exchanges address the biggest issue in America, business versus government, as Ford says, “I wanna knock the rust off this government.” But Ford also reminds the President, “Remember the capital is D.C., not Wall Street,” as he tries to lobby and blackmail the president for his own dirty wants and desires. The delight of the play is the curmudgeon Thomas Edison played by Richard Grusin. He claims to be Switzerland ,“neutral and cold,” and the father of invention is there to remind the audience, “This is not a social situation” among the three men. Mulling his aging body and realizing even Jesus Christ can’t save any of them, Edison’s one-liners are the comic relief to the underbelly of the American ego. The play resonates with themes still echoing today in American society and politics. With Gary McDonald’s outstanding backdrop, a beautifully painted woodland scene, “Camping with Henry and Tom” delivers a smart and entertaining night at the theater. FLORIDA KEYS NEWS BUREAU/Contributed

NO BULL IN THIS RACE Cow Key Zero K is set

I

f the idea of running seven miles seems more trouble than it’s worth, but you still want to do something athletic, skip the 7 Mile Bridge Run and head for Cow Key the next day. OK, skip the athletic part, too. The Cow Key Channel Bridge, stretching about 300 feet between Key West and neighboring Stock Island, is among the shortest of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway’s 42 bridges. It’s also the site of a “Zero K race” set for Sunday, April 2, for people who want to compete in an “athletic” challenge without breaking a sweat. “A lot of people say we’re ‘milking it’ with the Cow Key Channel Bridge Run, but it’s ‘udderly’ awesome,” quipped race co-producer David Sloan. Hundreds of entrants typically take part in the annual race, including many wearing cow or bull costumes inspired by the name of the bridge. Some bring their dogs or other domestic animals, though actual bovines are not allowed.

Participants are encouraged to move at their own pace and clock their own times as they travel the “grueling” distance. Separate heats are staged for competitors with pets, relay teams and people vying to post the slowest possible time. The Cow Key Channel event is scheduled the day after the Middle Keys’ annual 7 Mile Bridge Run. Entrants in the 2017 race are to gather beginning at 10 a.m. in the “costumed cow corral” at the entrance to Key West for “grazing,” final registration, race packet pickup and costume judging. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 11:45 a.m., followed at noon by the ringing of cowbells to start the stampede across the bridge. A post-race party is planned at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, 5210 College Road. Attractions include live music, food trucks, libations and awards presentations in multiple categories. More information is available at cowkeybridgerun.com. — Contributed

RUNNING THE BRIDGE

Parking, party details are different in 2017

H

undreds of runners will take to the 7 Mile Bridge in Marathon on the morning of Saturday, April 1 as part of a decades-long tradition that has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity. There’s one important element that’s different this year — the parking and buses. As usual, the bridge will be closed beginning at 6:45 a.m. in both directions. Instead of parking and congregating at Knights Key, this year race participants will meet at Stanley Switlik Elementary School at 33rd Street and Overseas Highway. There will be limited free parking. Starting at 5:30 a.m. school buses will transport the runners to the race start. The final bus for racers will leave the school at 6:40 a.m. The race begins at 7:20 a.m. at the northeast end of the bridge, in Marathon. It ends at Veterans Park at the southwest end where school buses will transport runners back to the parking zone for the race party — food, beverages and music . The bridge is scheduled to reopen at 9 a.m., and officials say it could take some time to clear traffic in the area.

Packet pickup is on Friday, March 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Marathon. Race officials say you’ll get your packet faster on Friday if you wait till after the 6 o’clock rush. On the morning of the race, Saturday, April 1, packet pickup will be from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. at Switlik Elementary School. Runners must have identification that matches registration, and no one will be allowed to pick up others’ race packet. The Marathon Runners Club’s 7 Mile Bridge Run began as a dedication run in 1982, celebrating the opening of the “new” 7 Mile Bridge. Money raised from this event is donated to the youth of the Middle Keys, both at the local schools as well as other youth groups which promote athletically oriented activities. The Marathon Runners Club has donated more than $500,000 since the run began in 1982.
