Pizza. It’s Italy’s third hottest import behind Lamborghini and Monica Belluci. Each day, Americans eat roughly 100 acres of pizza. That’s 350 slices per second. There is no wrong way to enjoy a slice of pizza — unless you’re one of those weirdos who start at the crust and work to the point. Any combination of toppings usually tastes good. Pepperoni ranks as the most preferred topping among connoisseurs, while anchovies come in last. To see find out how locals like their pizza, the Weekly asked…

What’s the perfect slice of pizza? “I love the buffalo chicken pizza. It comes with buffalo hot sauce, onions chicken, and American cheese,” said Tamara Clayton, pizza artisan at Domino’s Pizza.

Ana Maria Leyva, also of Domino’s Pizza, said “Plain with just cheese.”

Clair Williams, of Landsaw Eyecare, said “I like the meat lovers pizza.”

Gaby Telles, of AT&T, said “I’m simple. I like pepperoni.”

“Mushrooms, pepperoni, pineapple, spinach and black olives,” said Jesenia Cordle, also of AT&T.

On Friday, March 17, Cindy Freeburg went home to be with her Savior. There are so many people with so many stories about who she was and how she touched their lives. In addition to her Lord, she loved Rick, her husband of 40 years and true soul mate of more than 50 years; her sons Erik and Tyson, her “daughters”-in-law, Crystal and Heather; and of course her four grandchildren, Cael, Liana, Sloane and Bode. Her brother John, sister Sally and nieces Laura and Candace were also loved dearly. She touched the lives of many people through her ministry in BSF. She had been working as a commercial interior designer for many years. As her boys got older, she worked less to really spend her time raising them. At the same time, she heard about BSF and started as a class member in 1988. Then, as group leader, substitute teaching leader to teaching leader and finally, area advisor. This all encompassed a span of 30 years. She was an amazing Bible scholar and loved to teach and train others. During her life she loved our family, played a lot of tennis, loved boating and travelling — especially to North Carolina and California where our sons and families had relocated. For seven years in Islamorada, she loved our community, our church, and of course, the hospital. She felt God had moved us down here for a reason, or for many reasons, and felt the love and support of so many people. Memorial services for Cindy will be held at the Island Christian School, 83400 Overseas Highway in Islamorada at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

Michael Trixx

InTune 10 best covers of Chuck Berry songs

GABRIEL SANCHEZ

M

gabriel@keysweekly.com

agician Michael Trixx began his career doing street performances in his hometown of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Almost instantly he was noticed, and was sponsored by Budweiser for his first two years performing magic. His accolades are quiet impressive. In 2009, Trixx was featured on NBC’s America’s Got Talent. He’s won both South Carolina’s and Florida’s State Championship of stage magic. He’s toured the United States, Mexico, and the United Kingdom – and has performed a special show for former President Jimmy Carter. Twice. Even with all his accomplishments, Trixx remains humble, charismatic, and highly determined to be even bigger and better. That’s a tough task, seeing as his high energy performances are fast paced, sprinkled with humor, and mind bogglingly awe inducing. From the get-go, audiences can tell they are in for a wild ride. The former ‘80s and ‘90s era bass player combined his love of magic and heart pumping hard rock music to keep his show rocking and rolling. You can count on seeing plenty of fire, levitation, a confetti blizzard, and magic birds. Trixx and his seven feathery assistants have mastered the skill of appearing and vanishing into thin air – it’s jaw-dropping. Birds appear from fire, wands, newspapers, balloons, and every other item he pulls out of his bag of tricks. Perhaps the zaniest part of the show is when a seemingly infinite amount of eggs begin to pop out of his hat, hands, birds, and even mouth. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself toe tapping, laughing out loud, and asking yourself, “How the heck did he do that?”

Michael Trixx preforms at the Lorelei every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at sunset. His show runs 45 minute typically, and the magician has merchandise and instructional magic DVDs for sale so his fans can too learn the tricks of the masters, and show off for friends.

The Catch

T

uesdays are The Catch’s authentic Mexican night, and there’s no better libation for the occasion like the margarita. It goes perfectly with their generously stuffed burrito, or loaded nachos. In Holly Lopez’s margarita you’ll find agave nectar, fresh lime, tequila, triple sec, sour, and a splash of orange juice. (The splash of agave nectar does an especially good job of sweetening the margarita.) Lopez is also known to make her own spicy Bloody Mary mix, which some have said are the best they’ve had, per Lopez. She brought the recipe down from her home state of Delaware. Now in her 16th year of bartending, Lopez got her start mixing adult beverages at the Dover Downs Hotel, a casino and racetrack. A veteran of the Navy, Lopez served eight years as a Corpsman, which are the medical personnel attached to the Marine Corps who take care of troops in Navy military hospitals. Three years ago Lopez made the move down to the Upper Keys after her parents retired and convinced her to migrate to warmer weather. Now she spends her free time doing fishing of any sort, swimming, kayaking, and spending time with her husband and two kids. She also is a proud mother of her 13 yearold Jack Russell Terrier named Russell.

THE ARTS

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / MARCH 24, 2017

Amanda Jorgensen will offer pottery classes at Our Place in Paradise.

GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

T

he Upper Keys’ first communal art gallery — Our Place in Paradise — is celebrating its grand opening next month. The gallery will open for the first time on Friday, April 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. Guests will have a chance to meet the artists and learn about future workshops and classes while enjoying hors d’oeuvres and drinks. There will also be a raffle for an original oil painting by resident artist Kathleen Denis. The following day, April 8, the gallery will have a Demo Day. Artists will host demonstrations to show off their unique skills and abilities. Demonstrations will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 2 p.m. The gallery’s mission is unique among the Upper Keys’ art galleries, said co-founder Joanne Kolb. Using a collective approach, the goal is to “connect artists and work together to promote the arts, each other, and the other local galleries,” Kolb said. “We’d like to see the space used for community outreach. We want to offer our workspace to other artists, potters and glass artists to come and hold their own workshop,” said Kolb. The gallery is home to several artists, including Lane Kenworthy, a Florida International University professor and glass artist; Denis, whose personal studio will be a mainstay at the gallery; Peter Carolin, a multifaceted artist who also teaches oil painting courses for Florida Keys Community College in Key West; clay artist Frank Shaw; painter Robert J. Simone, who will be holding a three day workshop on seascape painting. Resident clay artist Amanda Jorgensen is especially excited about the new gallery. The 10-year artist teaches wheel throwing and hand building, as well as glass blowing. Jorgensen began clay art in high school, continued through college and eventually taught a few semesters of clay work. “I think clay is a great way for adults to rediscover their childhood,” said Jorgensen. “It’s a very welcome distraction for a lot of people who’d like to forget about the stressors of life.”

Welcome to Our Place Community Gallery opens its doors

Jorgensen first got involved with Our Place in Paradise after Frank Shaw told her about it. She later visited during the Paradise Paint Out plein air event. She said she’s most excited about working with the new equipment, holding her workshops, and experimenting with glass again. Our Place in Paradise is supported by the Share All Our Blessings nonprofit organization, which promotes art education, spiritual encouragement and supports charitable needs in the community. Any artist interested in holding workshops or using the space may contact the studio via email at ourplaceinparadise@outlook.com, by phone at 305-916-5828, or via the studio’s Facebook page. Our Place in Paradise is located at 88711 Old Highway, in Tavernier. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gallery assistant Irevi Troncoso, left, cofounder Joanne Kolb, rear, and co-founder Liza Moore are proud to open their doors to the community.

esides a taxing district, Monroe County Tourist Development Company also collects quite a bit of information about our visitors — where they’re from, what they do when they’re here, where they stay and how much they pay to visit paradise. In both 2015 and 2016, the TDC sampled 3,600 visitors with a face-to-face survey and the resulting report compares and contrasts the data providing some interesting bits of data. For example, in the last year more visitors are arriving in their own personal vehicles, more friend groups are traveling to the Keys, and if tourists visits another city in Florida, they are choosing Orlando more often than Miami. Where the graphics indicate an increase or decrease, that is the difference between FY 2016 and FY 2015. Special thanks is owed to Kelli Fountain, director of market research at the TDC.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

LADY STAY 12 questions with ‘Jodi’ Weinhofer of Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / MARCH 24, 2017

KRISTEN LIVENGOOD

I

kristen@keysweekly.com

t was just plain luck that Joanna Weinhofer ended up in Key West. “I had a great job that I didn’t want. I had a boyfriend that I didn’t want. It was a really cold, snowy winter with weather I didn’t like,” she said, of the decision to visit her older brother who is now a local fisherman. “He said don’t go back, so I took a year off, and that turned into 25-plus years.” Growing up, she had a gamut of jobs from lifeguard on the Jersey Shore, to server, to bartender, to working with developmentally disabled children, and shooting sports and fishing photography in Boston. After college at Holy Cross in Massachusetts (majoring in European Lit, Spanish, Pre-med with Biology minor), she was a property and condo manager, and pension and benefits specialist. But the Keys always called to Jodi. “I have been coming to the Keys since I was a kid to go fishing,” she said. “My father did not believe in vacations that did not include fishing. So every winter we came down to the Keys to fish.” So, with all the tourism details in this issue of The Weekly, we figured who else to get to know a little better than Jodi Weinhofer, president of the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West?

1. Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating … who walks in and sits next to you? My parents. They have both been gone for a while now, and you don’t realize all the things you want to ask them or tell them until they are gone. It would be amazing to see them again. 2. How did you become involved with Florida Keys Lodging Association? I had done property management and vacation rental management for Greg O’Berry Realty and then I was a condo manager. Someone recommended I apply, and the rest is history. 3. What are some of the biggest obstacles with the lodging association? There is a huge disconnect between the fact that our economy in the Keys is based on tourism, and what that looks like. I wish we could find a way to make everyone realize how many ways tourism touches their lives and how much of a balancing act it all is, even if they don’t directly work in the industry. 4. What is your favorite tourism, “heads in beds,” event? We have so many good ones, but I would have to say Key West Songwriters Festival (coming up in May). I didn’t know how much I liked country music until I heard the writers talking about why they wrote a song and then hearing them sing it. You get a little peek into their souls, and the venues are so intimate, and then you get amazing music. It is really something special!

5. What would your superpower be? Ahhh – this is for real – my superpower is Parking Karma. Not what anyone, including me would pick, but it runs in my family, and it really does come in handy. 6. If you could take one item on a deserted island, what? why? Scott or Lucy — preferably both. I would want to be there with my best friend – whether that is my guy or my dog. 7. Favorite guilty pleasure? I am a bit of a movie junkie. I love going to the movie theater, preferably at the Tropic where I can get good popcorn, carrot cake, and a glass of wine to enjoy the movie. 8. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you do/buy? Travel! I would go on an amazing trip to Spain and Italy and Greece and Ireland. I would definitely take my family and my friends with me. Or, maybe I would do something more practical first and pay off my mortgage so I can stop paying such outrageous insurance. 9. If you could change the world, what would you do? That is a tough one. Make sure everyone has enough food and water. But I think if we could make sure that everyone got a decent education — that could really help solve a lot of the other problems in the world. I have met a lot of people who just needed a little help to become really amazing. 10. Favorite place you’ve traveled to? Or, lived? I love every place I travel – whether it is Italy or Greece or Nantucket. But, I would either say Madrid, Spain because I lived there for a year in college or Ireland because we went with the whole family to see where my mom came from. And staying in an old castle is pretty darn cool. 11. What did you want to be when you grew up? A doctor. 12. So, this local fishing brother of yours, is he the same Weinhofer who took rocker Ozzy Osbourne and his son Jack fishing this past week? No comment. Wink.

CSHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / MARCH 24, 2017

The Upper Keys Weekly is proud to partner with Coral Shores High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and CSHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Hurricane Pride” and congratulate all of the outstanding students of the week. What organizations and activities are you involved with at Coral Shores High School and why are they important to you? I play three sports — football, soccer and baseball. These are very important to me because I would like to pursue a professional career in one of those sports. It’s also important to me because I want to represent this school with pride. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Coral Shores High School and why? Jake Hurst. During my first two years playing football he helped me immensely to learn the game and along with his persistence he helped me to stay focused in the classroom. He has been a great influence in my life.

What is your favorite social medium? Whom do you follow? Snapchat. My favorite filter was the helicopter hat one, but they don’t have it anymore. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? A major challenge in the Keys is that the coral reefs are being contaminated. With more people coming in will only make it worse. Over the summer I plan to help with a big sandbar cleanup that would certainly help. What are your plans after high school? I definitely plan to attend a four-year university and would like to play baseball or soccer at that university.
