Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi answers questions from the audience on March 8 at the Key Largo library. Marathon’s meeting is on April 10. CONTRIBUTED

PLANNING AHEAD I County wants to hear from you

f you want a say in how Monroe County sets its priorities and plans to spend your money, here’s the chance. The county is asking for public input as it begins work on its strategic plan covering 2018 to 2023. The plan will guide policy and budget decisions; it is an update to the plan.

The first step is to hear directly from the county’s citizens about priorities, concerns and vision for the future of the county. What issues and infrastructure would you like to see your county government tackle in the next few years? To obtain this input, the Monroe County Board of County Commis-

sioners is hosting three meetings that are open to the public. Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi will provide a “state of the county” update and county commissioners and staff will be available to answer questions. The schedule: • The first meeting was held March 14 at the Murray Nelson Government and Cultural Center, 102050 Overseas Highway, Key Largo. • Next up is a meeting on Thursday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at Harvey Government Center, 1200 Truman Avenue, Key West. • The third meeting is on Monday, April 10 at 6 p.m. at the Marathon Government Center, 2798 Overseas Highway, Marathon. At these meetings, the public will be able to fill out a residential and/or business survey about county government that also will help shape the new strategic plan. The surveys also are available online at monroecounty-fl. gov. “We look forward to hearing from the community,” Gastesi said. “These meetings will enable us to garner a current understanding of the public’s issues, needs and priorities.” —Contributed

KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

It’s estimated that almost 5,000,000 visitors come to the Keys every year. (For more tourist stats, see pages 14-15.) And while ALL locals realize they are the engine of our economy, sometimes the wear and tear — stop-and-go traffic, a grocery store line that is painfully long, and lack of shady parking spots — is cumulative. It’s about this time of year that islanders start wondering when things will ease up. So the Weekly asked locals …

When is season over? Even though he doesn’t look old enough to drink (he is, we checked), Matt “Beef” McKeon said he looking forward to being able to walk from the Ale House across the street to The Brass Monkey without seeing a car. “We should be able to play in the road after midnight without any danger,” he joked.

Cristina Malafy 305.775.9909 Cristina@ACRESales.com www.ACRESales.com

Brandon “Pop-tart” Simmons said he’s mostly looking forward to sleeping in. “I’ve been up fishing every day for the past four months,” he said. He is a charter mate on the Tailwalker out of Duck Key.

“Season is over when I have to fold up the beach towels,” said Jenny’s mom, who owns a home on Key Colony Beach and winters in the Keys from Boston. (We only know this beautiful lady as Jenny’s mom and she said she loves The Weekly!) She also wanted to add in a “Go Pats” while she was hanging at her favorite restaurant, Key Colony Inn.

Cherie Dunford, a nurse at Fishermen’s Hospital, said she’s looking forward to a less busy emergency room, and to be able to make a left-hand turn. “It’s coming soon, to a Marathon near you,” she said on a rare night off with her firefighting husband Eric at Overseas Pub.

Carolyn Anthony, of Grassy Key Outpost and Sparky’s Landing, said she’ll be happy when grocery shopping is a pleasure again. “When the customer’s at Publix are wearing more than bathing suits, that’s when I’ll know season is over,” she said.

F

or the past three years or so, Marathon library branch manager Christy Danford has been — literally — rearranging the books and taking stock of the situation. With a background in both library sciences and information technology, she and the staff have plenty of exciting ideas worthy of the new library soon to be built in Marathon. It will be located on the corner of Stanley Switlik Elementary School block, where the adult education building is now. The combined space will include multiple meeting rooms, expanded curriculum and a building with as many “green” features as possible. But the action is starting now with a birthday party on Friday, March 24 and the public is invited to learn about what’s going on now, and what’s planned.

MARATHON WEEKLY / MARCH 24, 2017

Dust off the old books Marathon’s library undergoing revitalization

2. CULTURAL LITERACY In 2017, the Marathon library has started inviting musicians and artists to interact with the community. The Kennedys, a New York-based duo, performed on a stage in the newly refurbished garden area. The library currently has a display of the work of the late photographer Arthur Rothstein, on loan from another institution. “And, on Friday, we will have local artist Courtney Foster, who is a chalk artist, who will be creating an exhibit in the Kids’ Room,” Danford said.

3. BOOKS They always have been, and always will be the reason for the library’s existence. Right now, the Marathon library has 33,000 physical items — books, DVDs, audiobooks and CDs). Last fiscal year, there were 52,000 visits to the library where 2,000 patrons checked out 15,373 items. There’s no reason to be overwhelmed, librarians have plenty of suggestions including the the monthly exhibit at the front door that is always cleverly themed. This month? “I can’t remember the title but it’s green” in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. “Of course, we have many e-audio (recorded) and e-books (digital) offerings too,” Danford said. Users can use the Overdrive App to “check out” the books.

reasons to love the library 1. DIGITAL LITERACY “Before I started studying library science, my background was in information technology,” Danford said. Sooner rather than later, the library plans on offering basic computer classes for both seniors and kids. Danford recently toured libraries on the mainland with You-Make (sewing and embroidery machines, painting and easels) and You-Media centers (Mac computers with suites of design, film and sound recording software, robotic kits, green screens and sound booths). “But, I don’t know if that’s what the Keys wants. It may be more appropriate to have sophisticated navigation software or technology with ecology applications,” Danford said.

Library is celebrating a birthday The public is invited to the Marathon library’s birthday party on Friday, March 24 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. In addition to light refreshments, the library will have presentations on its history and staff, a 3D printer and live chalk mural artist demonstrations. Designs for the new library will also be on display.

5. LIBRARY STAFF More than almost any other department, Monroe County Library Services suffered during the budget cuts of the recent recession. Slowly, it’s building back to where it was and Danford hopes to even expand further with the help of the human resources. Student mentoring will be important as those programs progress, as is the standard, helpful librarian — the one that can steer guests to reliable information sources, maintain order and be the welcoming ambassador to all segments of Marathon’s population. 4. WHAT’S COMING In the plans for years, the new Marathon library is set to be complete in late 2018. “We stalled for a little bit to consider some of the ‘green’ features,’” Danford said, adding she hopes solar panels can be added to the roof of the structure. It will be located very close to Stanley Switlik, easily accessible to those students, and include more than one community space. “We will have a separate room just for library programming and events, plus a room that everyone can use,” she said. “It will also be home to the adult education center and we hope that we can help each other out with dual programming.” Plans call for a temperature-controlled archival vault with materials from the state and associated reading room. With Danford’s background in tech, expect lots of those bells and whistles.

BY THE NUMBERS 40,000 — number of registered patrons in Monroe County library system 350,000 — number of visits to Keys libraries in FY 2016-17 30,000 — the number of Keys patrons who checked out e-audio (recorded) and e-books (digital) books in FY 2016-17

BIG CONCERT, BIG CHECK The American Legion Riders from Marathon’s Post 154 recently presented Project VetRelief, top, with a check for $16,200 — proceeds from February’s Coral Head Music Fest featuring Molly Hatchet and the Georgia Satellites. In addition to supporting the agency that provides services to veterans, the Riders also gave a donation to Wesley House Family Services and set aside funds for regular projects such as Marathon High School scholarships and flag retirement ceremonies. During the formal check presentation, Marathon local and concert organizer Rich Anderson, right, was surprised with an award of his own. Project VetRelief awarded him an achievement award — one of only three that the agency has ever distributed. “You cannot imagine how honored I feel,” Anderson said. CONTRIBUTED

The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys serves the needs and philanthropic aims of donors who wish to better the Keys, now and in the future. Since 1996, the foundation has been making grants, supporting local nonprofits through programs and services such as the Leadership Success Academy and Unsung Heroes, and investing time and resources to helping individuals and families support what they feel passionate about here in the Keys. “We believe there is great potential, tremendous power, and unlimited possibility when we all work together and pool our resources to make our community better,” said the foundation’s president Dianna Sutton. “We’ve accomplished more working together than we could have working individually. Partnerships are essential to our work and our success.”

esides a taxing district, Monroe County Tourist Development Company also collects quite a bit of information about our visitors — where they’re from, what they do when they’re here, where they stay and how much they pay to visit paradise. In both 2015 and 2016, the TDC sampled 3,600 visitors with a face-to-face survey and the resulting report compares and contrasts the data providing some interesting bits of data. For example, in the last year more visitors are arriving in their own personal vehicles, more friend groups are traveling to the Keys, and if tourists visits another city in Florida, they are choosing Orlando more often than Miami. Where the graphics indicate an increase or decrease, that is the difference between FY 2016 and FY 2015. Special thanks is owed to Kelli Fountain, director of market research at the TDC.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

LADY STAY 12 questions with ‘Jodi’ Weinhofer of Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West

MARATHON WEEKLY / MARCH 24, 2017

KRISTEN LIVENGOOD

I

kristen@keysweekly.com

t was just plain luck that Joanna Weinhofer ended up in Key West. “I had a great job that I didn’t want. I had a boyfriend that I didn’t want. It was a really cold, snowy winter with weather I didn’t like,” she said, of the decision to visit her older brother who is now a local fisherman. “He said don’t go back, so I took a year off, and that turned into 25-plus years.” Growing up, she had a gamut of jobs from lifeguard on the Jersey Shore, to server, to bartender, to working with developmentally disabled children, and shooting sports and fishing photography in Boston. After college at Holy Cross in Massachusetts (majoring in European Lit, Spanish, Pre-med with Biology minor), she was a property and condo manager, and pension and benefits specialist. But the Keys always called to Jodi. “I have been coming to the Keys since I was a kid to go fishing,” she said. “My father did not believe in vacations that did not include fishing. So every winter we came down to the Keys to fish.” So, with all the tourism details in this issue of The Weekly, we figured who else to get to know a little better than Jodi Weinhofer, president of the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West?

1. Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating … who walks in and sits next to you? My parents. They have both been gone for a while now, and you don’t realize all the things you want to ask them or tell them until they are gone. It would be amazing to see them again. 2. How did you become involved with Florida Keys Lodging Association? I had done property management and vacation rental management for Greg O’Berry Realty and then I was a condo manager. Someone recommended I apply, and the rest is history. 3. What are some of the biggest obstacles with the lodging association? There is a huge disconnect between the fact that our economy in the Keys is based on tourism, and what that looks like. I wish we could find a way to make everyone realize how many ways tourism touches their lives and how much of a balancing act it all is, even if they don’t directly work in the industry. 4. What is your favorite tourism, “heads in beds,” event? We have so many good ones, but I would have to say Key West Songwriters Festival (coming up in May). I didn’t know how much I liked country music until I heard the writers talking about why they wrote a song and then hearing them sing it. You get a little peek into their souls, and the venues are so intimate, and then you get amazing music. It is really something special!

5. What would your superpower be? Ahhh – this is for real – my superpower is Parking Karma. Not what anyone, including me would pick, but it runs in my family, and it really does come in handy. 6. If you could take one item on a deserted island, what? why? Scott or Lucy — preferably both. I would want to be there with my best friend – whether that is my guy or my dog. 7. Favorite guilty pleasure? I am a bit of a movie junkie. I love going to the movie theater, preferably at the Tropic where I can get good popcorn, carrot cake, and a glass of wine to enjoy the movie. 8. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you do/buy? Travel! I would go on an amazing trip to Spain and Italy and Greece and Ireland. I would definitely take my family and my friends with me. Or, maybe I would do something more practical first and pay off my mortgage so I can stop paying such outrageous insurance. 9. If you could change the world, what would you do? That is a tough one. Make sure everyone has enough food and water. But I think if we could make sure that everyone got a decent education — that could really help solve a lot of the other problems in the world. I have met a lot of people who just needed a little help to become really amazing. 10. Favorite place you’ve traveled to? Or, lived? I love every place I travel – whether it is Italy or Greece or Nantucket. But, I would either say Madrid, Spain because I lived there for a year in college or Ireland because we went with the whole family to see where my mom came from. And staying in an old castle is pretty darn cool. 11. What did you want to be when you grew up? A doctor. 12. So, this local fishing brother of yours, is he the same Weinhofer who took rocker Ozzy Osbourne and his son Jack fishing this past week? No comment. Wink.

Lost & Found Local returns lost class ring SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

T

revor Wofsey, a local postal carrier, has a hobby that finally, finally yielded some satisfactory results. He’s a longtime fan of metal detectors. At Christmastime, he invested in a second-hand White Surfmaster PI, good to 100 feet. (“That’s too deep for me.”) And, on Sunday, he found a Marathon High School class ring in a couple feet of water at Sombrero Beach in Marathon. Its identifying features included the name “Paul,” the Gemini sign, and the year he graduated — 2012. Like any self-respecting, smalltown detective, Wofsey followed a time-tested method of detection and deduction. He chatted up the neighbors about his find. One guessed it might be Paul Acosta. So, he put it up on a Facebook message board and hit immediate pay dirt. “I think the first person to tag me in the post was [teacher] Jeff Cox. I’m still getting calls — ‘Is that your ring?’” said Acosta, laughing, on Tuesday. Acosta said he lost it while playing ball at the beach. He was standing in the water playing catch when it happened. He said it took a couple of minutes to realize it was missing.

“It’s in pretty good shape,” Acosta said, examining the ring. “I expected it to be all rusted out.” “Yeah,” said Trevor, sadly and a little wistfully. “It’s probably the best thing I’ve ever found. I find mostly junk — little girl costume jewelry and Corona bottle caps and old pop tops.” But the thrill of the hunt is strong with Wofsey. “But this one time, this guy found a gold wedding ring with diamonds right in front of my eyes.” As he related the story, his eyes glazed a bit and a smile crept over his face. Yes, we suspect Wofsey will be back at the beach next weekend. [Conversation overheard in the lobby of Marathon City Hall at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.] Trevor: Hey, are you Paul? Paul: Yes. Trevor: Here it is! How long ago did you lose it? Paul: Like four or five years ago, right after I got it. I’m surprised someone found it now. Trevor: It was in knee-deep water. Paul: I figured. That’s where I lost it. Trevor: That’s the first good thing I’ve found. Paul: Thank you.

y

Come by car, boat or foot!

It’s hard to tell who is happier — Paul Acosta, left, owner of the ring, or Trevor Wofsey, who found it.

Around 40 participants were on hand at the Marathon Community Park last weekend for the Russell Earl “Bucky” Dent Skills Clinic, hosted by Marathon’s Art Stephens. (Dent is a former American Major League Baseball player and manager with two World Series rings.) The kids, top, learned basic skills of baseball at the free clinic. Earlier that week, Capt. Jack Carlson of Big Time Bait and Tackle, bottom, helped Marathon campers with their fishing skills at Oceanfront Park. The activity was part of a spring break camp offered by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. One camp activity during the week was a fishing clinic to introduce young anglers to the sport of fishing. Big Time donated most of the bait for the event. CONTRIBUTED

MARATHON WEEKLY / MARCH 24, 2017

Week 2 The teams with the highest percentage of weight loss from Feb. 6-13 are listed below.

Going forward, the Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed in the paper every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders. Teams marked with an asterisk (*) had at least one member miss the previous weigh-in. Although we still calculated the team’s percentage of weight loss, it was weight loss achieved over two weeks.

THINK If there’s any more seductive bit of diet sabotage than the “I deserve it” mindset, I don’t know it. Thoughts like, “With the day I’ve had, the world owes me a hot fudge sundae,” are a method for nurturing and rewarding yourself. But, and this is important, there are better ways to do it. Call your best friend, cuddle with a pet, or go sit on the dock for 10 minutes uninterrupted, even if there are still dirty dishes in the sink. — Sara Matthis

No. Stop it. Drop that. That’s what you need to say to yourself if you find your hand moving, of its own accord, toward a Krispy Kreme glazed donut. It packs 190 calories in each delicious, golden ring. Still want it? Consider this: an average 200-pound man would need to walk two miles to burn it off. And who has just one donut?

N

ot just a bartender at Grassy Key Outpost, Matt Lynch, a jack of all trades, works the expo line, runs the convenience store, and takes to-go orders, too. And, that’s fine with him, since he’s been working in the hospitality industry in Marathon for 33 years. He can still be found at Sparky’s Landing, but loves his little breaks at the Outpost because it’s a cool 72 degrees inside and he’s not sweating. “I don’t have on my signature sweatbands when I am here, so people are usually thrown a little off,” he said jokingly. Lynch said the most popular beer is Iguana Bait on tap. “It’s made with hibiscus flowers and honey and by Florida Keys Brewing Company,” he said. “Everyone seems to really like it.” Everyone loves Matt, too. As a graduate of Marathon High School in 1985 (and proudly the senior class president), he added that the Outpost “seriously has the best pizza in the Florida Keys. They are made from scratch and they are awesome,” he said. He also suggests the spice pork lettuce wraps as an appetizer, and Mom’s Meatloaf or the shrimp and grits as an entrée. “I really love working for the Anthonys,” he said of Matt and Carolyn who own both Sparky’s and the outpost.) He celebrated five years with them in January. Sparky’s is located on Key Colony Beach and, just a few miles away, Grassy Key Outpost is on Grassy Key.

Musical Legends, Part Whatever Another tuneful installment of an ongoing series

F

or those readers blissfully (or otherwise) unaware of my passion, my driving force, it is this: playing music. Sharing my songs with a receptive group of people, large or small, is really what keeps me going. There is precious little I’d rather be doing than just that. Second to that is listening to good music played live. So far this year, I’ve been blessed to have experienced three legends in concert (four, if you count the JOHN Bob Dylan show BARTUS the day before Thanksgiving is a City Council member and a last year). What former Mayor of follows is a quick the City of Maramini-review of thon. John is also those three arta musician who ists, three of my performs around town at various all-time favorite establishments. singer-songwriters. In January, Don Henley brought his show to the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood. Don brought another 14 musicians and singers along to give life to his songs from the Eagles, his solo hits, and some choice cover songs as well. Fans of his solo songs like “Heart of the Matter,” “Sunset Grill,” “End of the Innocence,” “New York Minute,” and “The Boys of Summer” were very happy. There were a couple of interesting cover choices — “It Don’t Matter to the Sun,” a Garth Brooks (as Chris Gaines) song was a treat; Don’s big band really rocked on a surprising rendition of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” It was the Eagles songs that many came to hear, and Mr. Henley did not disappoint. A couple of musicians who played on the last several Eagles tours accompanied Don through standards like “Life in the Fast Lane,” “Witchy Woman,” “One of These Nights,” and “Hotel California” (Steuart Smith, who played Don Felder’s parts on Eagles tours after Felder was let go, was amazing all night on the fretboard). Personal favorites included “The Last Resort,” an epic song about the human tendency to destroy the places we love — “Call some place Paradise, kiss it goodbye.” Another from the Hotel California album was part of a two-song tribute to Glenn Frey as Don closed the concert:

“Wasted Time,” which was followed by “Desperado.” Throughout the concert, Don Henley’s voice was strong and true, proving that some things do indeed improve with age (Mr. Henley turns 70 this July). It was over 25 years ago that we first heard the piano arpeggio that was the prelude to the lyrics, “Put on my blue suede shoes and I boarded the plane.” That song about Beale Street, Graceland, and an old piano player named Muriel won Marc Cohn the Grammy for Best New Artist a quarter-century ago. “Walking in Memphis” was just his biggest hit, and he brought it (along with so many other great songs) to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Arts. After I had bought tickets to that show, I found out he was also playing at the Key West Theater. Yes, I went to that one, too. He brought along a keyboardist and percussionist, and Marc mostly stayed behind a grand piano, coming out now and then to play his lefthanded Gibson acoustic guitar. Marc had an easy and friendly rapport with his audience, telling the stories behind many of his songs, and playing audience requests (I got a song request played at both shows — “Olana” in Lauderdale and “Healing Hands” in Key West). Other favorites included “Silver Thunderbird,” “True Companion,” “Dig Down Deep,” “Listening to Levon,” and so many more off his albums. CDs. Collection of downloads… whatever. During the show, Marc reflected on his career and what he called “the transformational power of music.” He told of his journey to find and develop his songwriting voice, using his songs as examples and mileposts. All in all, it was a rewarding and soulsatisfying experience. Next week: Gordon Lightfoot! • • • • • If you haven’t made plans for tonight — Friday, March 24 — please stop and help the Marathon Library celebrate it’s 55th birthday! The event starts at 6:30 p.m., and I will be performing in the garden behind the library! I am really looking forward to this, and I hope to see you out tonight! John Bartus performs Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek at the Holiday Inn Express, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, Friday at the Marathon Library 55th birthday bash, Saturday evening solo at the Key Colony Inn, and Sunday and Monday evenings at the Lighthouse Grill at Hyatt Place Faro Blanco. www. johnbartus.com
