KEY WEST WEEKLY / MARCH 24, 2017 KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

It’s estimated that almost 5,000,000 visitors come to the Keys every year. (For more tourist stats, see pages 16-17.) And while ALL locals realize they are the engine of our economy, sometimes the wear and tear — stop-and-go traffic, a grocery store line that is painfully long, and lack of shady parking spots — is cumulative. It’s about this time of year that islanders start wondering when things will ease up. So the Weekly asked locals …

How do you know when season is officially over? Diane May lives on Petronia Street and said she’ll know when season is over when her friends can finally find a parking spot in front of her house. “I can’t wait for my friends to be able to come visit me again,” she said. “They won’t come until there is parking.”

One of Aqua’s famous performers, Elle, said she’s just excited about being able to walk down Duval Street without having to look where she’s going. “The less children I step on, the better,” she said before heading on stage.

Kristen Ryan, who lives in Key West eight months out of the year, said she’s looking forward to finding parking spaces again. “I can’t find a spot to watch the sunset at Mallory Square, or here at Aqua Idol,” she said. She was supporting the Aqua Idol finale raising money for The Waterfront Playhouse, where she sits on the board.

“When the chicken can cross the road,” Lee Ann Holland said, adding, “and a tourist doesn’t stop to take a picture of it.” She retired to Key West in 2004 and loves the island, even when it’s filled with spring breakers.

Stephen Kitsakos said it best, “It’s never over, sometimes there’s just less people.” As a theater director and writer who sits on the board at The Studios of Key West, he said the more people in the off season the merrier.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

KEY WEST WEEKLY / MARCH 24, 2017

LADY STAY 12 questions with ‘Jodi’ Weinhofer of Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West

KRISTEN LIVENGOOD

I

kristen@keysweekly.com

t was just plain luck that Joanna Weinhofer ended up in Key West. “I had a great job that I didn’t want. I had a boyfriend that I didn’t want. It was a really cold, snowy winter with weather I didn’t like,” she said, of the decision to visit her older brother who is now a local fisherman. “He said don’t go back, so I took a year off, and that turned into 25-plus years.” Growing up, she had a gamut of jobs from lifeguard on the Jersey Shore, to server, to bartender, to working with developmentally disabled children, and shooting sports and fishing photography in Boston. After college at Holy Cross in Massachusetts (majoring in European Lit, Spanish, Pre-med with Biology minor), she was a property and condo manager, and pension and benefits specialist. But the Keys always called to Jodi. “I have been coming to the Keys since I was a kid to go fishing,” she said. “My father did not believe in vacations that did not include fishing. So every winter we came down to the Keys to fish.” So, with all the tourism details in this issue of The Weekly, we figured who else to get to know a little better than Jodi Weinhofer, president of the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West?

1. Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating … who walks in and sits next to you? My parents. They have both been gone for a while now, and you don’t realize all the things you want to ask them or tell them until they are gone. It would be amazing to see them again. 2. How did you become involved with Florida Keys Lodging Association? I had done property management and vacation rental management for Greg O’Berry Realty and then I was a condo manager. Someone recommended I apply, and the rest is history. 3. What are some of the biggest obstacles with the lodging association? There is a huge disconnect between the fact that our economy in the Keys is based on tourism, and what that looks like. I wish we could find a way to make everyone realize how many ways tourism touches their lives and how much of a balancing act it all is, even if they don’t directly work in the industry. 4. What is your favorite tourism, “heads in beds,” event? We have so many good ones, but I would have to say Key West Songwriters Festival (coming up in May). I didn’t know how much I liked country music until I heard the writers talking about why they wrote a song and then hearing them sing it. You get a little peek into their souls, and the venues are so intimate, and then you get amazing music. It is really something special!

5. What would your superpower be? Ahhh – this is for real – my superpower is Parking Karma. Not what anyone, including me would pick, but it runs in my family, and it really does come in handy. 6. If you could take one item on a deserted island, what? why? Scott or Lucy — preferably both. I would want to be there with my best friend – whether that is my guy or my dog. 7. Favorite guilty pleasure? I am a bit of a movie junkie. I love going to the movie theater, preferably at the Tropic where I can get good popcorn, carrot cake, and a glass of wine to enjoy the movie. 8. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you do/buy? Travel! I would go on an amazing trip to Spain and Italy and Greece and Ireland. I would definitely take my family and my friends with me. Or, maybe I would do something more practical first and pay off my mortgage so I can stop paying such outrageous insurance. 9. If you could change the world, what would you do? That is a tough one. Make sure everyone has enough food and water. But I think if we could make sure that everyone got a decent education — that could really help solve a lot of the other problems in the world. I have met a lot of people who just needed a little help to become really amazing. 10. Favorite place you’ve traveled to? Or, lived? I love every place I travel – whether it is Italy or Greece or Nantucket. But, I would either say Madrid, Spain because I lived there for a year in college or Ireland because we went with the whole family to see where my mom came from. And staying in an old castle is pretty darn cool. 11. What did you want to be when you grew up? A doctor. 12. So, this local fishing brother of yours, is he the same Weinhofer who took rocker Ozzy Osbourne and his son Jack fishing this past week? No comment. Wink.

WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN Key West’s Oldest House is a hidden charm HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

S

tepping through the gate of The Oldest House, it’s always surprising to see the expansive lawn and tropical sanctuary just steps off bustling Duval Street. Amid the busiest part of Key West, the Oldest House has held a commanding presence, enduring hurricanes, fires, and wars, placing it at the center of Key West history. Built in 1829 on Whitehead Street by Captain Francis Watlington, it was moved to 322 Duval Street in 1836 where it has remained as both template and emblem of Key West architecture. Recently, the Oldest House has had a facelift with new sod, new ADA-compliant bathrooms, a new roof and loads of new paint – all in all, $125,000 in repairs. The Old

Island Restoration Foundation, which keeps the property, is bringing the Oldest House into the 21st century while maintaining the charm of the past. Looking to revitalize interest in the venue, the foundation is trying to get the word out again that what’s old can be new again. “People forget to see us as a resource,” said Kathy Sage, assistant administrator. While the lawn is perfect for weddings and events, can host up to 300 people and is financially more economical than other locations, it has gotten lost in the sea of shiny new

“One month can see visitors from 40 states and 20 countries at The Oldest House.” —Kathy Sage, of assistant administrator.

hotel venues. But the Oldest House is more than a setting; it is the keeper of our culture. “We think long range about the community” said Teri Beard, administrator. “We are about getting involved.”

The Oldest House garden welcomes such Key West annual events as the conch blowing contest, holiday gingerbread decorating, plein air painters and Key West Literary Seminar. Soon the facility will partner with The Key West Art and Historical Society for future events. In all, there are 300 people devoted to the Oldest House and the Foundation, and they are always seeking more. “The mission is the same … wanting to preserve and maintain historic architecture of Key West,” said Beard. “We helped create a passion for preservation in Key West.” Every year the foundation raises $25,000 in grants for conservancy of Key West, allowing homeowners and non-profit commercial buildings to apply for financial help with their own preservation. Also, funds generated through the annual House Tours create Take Stock in Children Scholarships. The Oldest House has the unique job of maintaining and preserving Key West’s heritage while bolstering vital community events. Beard welcomes all visitors, saying, “We love to have everyone in the community involved, tourists and residents alike.” More information is at www.oirf. org for more information.

Jazz-Age Retrospectacular

Rock Solomon brings vintage era to life KRISTEN LIVENGOOD

“The Jazz-Age Retrospectacular is an interactive look at the music, style, and culture of America’s most iconic music era, the Jazz-age.” —Rock Solomon

SCHEDULE: Friday, March 31: Mystery theater at Mangoes Restaurant. Saturday, April 1: Multimedia jazz noir concert at The Studios of Key West. Sunday, April 2: Swing dance lessons at Bottle Cap’s Blue Room.

I

kristen@keysweekly.com

t’s an era that isn’t easily forgotten, filled with jazz music, women puffing on skinny cigarettes, parties that lasted into the night with flappers, speakeasies, cronies, and Satchmo. Musician Rock Solomon is bringing that vintage style and sound to Key West again. “Instead of just a concert, I am trying to involve the community in the history and culture of jazz through an experience,” said Solomon. So, he’s planned three weekends — one each month through June. The first is Friday, March 31 through Sunday, April 2 and includes interactive experiences ranging from murder mystery theater, to narrative concert, to swing dance lessons. “It’s proven to be a really cool experience,” he said. “Everyone so far has gotten really into the vintage attire, the hair, the makeup, the raiding of grandma’s closet for Gatsby-like outfits.” Solomon grew up around music — his dad a big-band leader, and mom a jazz vocalist. He “rebelled” by joining the corporate world until one day he woke up and accepted his musical destiny. He’s played around Key West for some time but, “I was having trouble finding gigs, so I decided to make my own path and create more,” he said. The TDC agreed with his jazz festival pitch, and funded the events. “I think they really liked the interactive part of it,” he said. On Friday, March 31, the weekend kicks off with an interactive mystery theater experience at Mangoes Restaurant on Duval Street. “You walk in, get a great meal, and are handed a card explaining your character for the night,” he said. As the night goes on, more cards are handed out explaining twists in the plot for the whodunit. Doors open at 6 p.m. for cocktails and murders start happening at 7 p.m. Bar bystander tickets start at $45 and includes a glass of champagne for guests who are in attire, witnesses are $115 and includes the five course meal including gratuity and tax, and VIP suspects are $165 which includes the dinner, VIP booth seating and open well bar.

Rock Solomon sings a song at swing dance night at the Blue Room with his swing band, James King on piano, Coy White on trombone and Luis Vera on drums.

‘Detective’ Solomon interrogates a ‘suspicious guest’ at the Mystery Dinner Theatre Cabaret in Mangoes upstairs ballroom.

Saturday night at 8 p.m., the multimedia concert series brings Jazz Noir to The Studios of Key West. “It’s a story about a Key West singer in the 1930s experiencing the ups and downs of the great depression, hurricanes, and rum running through songs, narrative, and video,” he said. Each month brings a different layout and guest talent. General admission is $38 and VIP preferred seating with champagne is $55. The Sunday swing dance lessons have proven to be a favorite. Lucy Carleton brings her 20 years of experience as a social dance instructor to a ’40s style dance night at Bottle Cap’s Blue Room. “It’s for everybody. If you haven’t done it before, we’ll get you started, and if you have, we will get you doing new things,” she said. The best part she says is it’s a great ice-

breaker. “You don’t have to bring a partner, we are constantly rotating during the lessons so everyone meets and dances with everyone.” (And, Solomon’s live swing band brings the tunes from 7 to 10 p.m.) Tickets start at $15 pre-purchased online, or $20 at the door. “Bring the glamour and gangster,” Solomon said. Inspired by Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra, Solomon said, “It’s a love of vintage culture and vintage music.” Other weekend Jazz Retrospectaular events also take place May 5-7 and June 2-4. For more information and to buy tickets to the events (there are single event passes, and full weekend passes available), visit mixdeity.com.

REPRESENTATION

KEY WEST WEEKLY / MARCH 24, 2017

THE WEEKLY GOES TO WASHINGTON A visit with U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo BRITT MYERS

britt@keysweekly.com

T

ypically I catch up with our U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo in warmer conditions, but last Friday I had the opportunity to drop in (literally) on the young U.S. Representative during session at our nation’s capital. As the temperatures outside a snow-covered D.C. were teetering below freezing, the bowels of the Capitol building were steaming with issues ranging from the environment to health care. After several years of incessant political news streaming from every device, the personal experience was uniquely surreal. On my way to meet Congressman Curbelo, I bumped right into Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and her posse, who almost ran me over in a stampede of documents and leather messenger bags. Suddenly, the entire political process, which seemed like a four-year primetime drama on television, was happening live right in front of me like Jefferson Smith naively promoting the Boy Rangers. Graciously, Curbelo stepped out of a Ways and Means Committee meeting to chat. Obviously weary from extended sessions (some lasting well beyond 4 a.m. on a given evening), the congressman quickly caught a third wind and said, “Sorry it took a moment to come out, but we were working on an important VA measure that affects our veteran’s ability to choose their doctors.” During my brief tour, the Congressman led us through the Republican “Cloak Room” and stepped onto the House floor to cast a vote using what resembled a debit card being inserted into an electronic receiver. And later, from a private capitol-building balcony overlooking the Washington Monument, Curbelo briefed the Weekly on his most recent activity. “This has been a busy week. Climate change continues to be a primary focus for me and has been a major point of emphasis this week,” said Curbelo, who recently co-sponsored the

1 Republican climate change resolution and has gained national notoriety for his bipartisan efforts. “And of course, Health Care is a major focus this week and I’m working to ensure the most vulnerable of Americans have access to health care without the burden of increased costs, fewer health options and the threat of fraud. And then today, we are working to do right by our veterans by offering them the ability to choose their doctors while granting our leaders the authority to hold the employees aat the VA accountable.” Typically, we see Carlos during his constituent visits and can easily forget how chaotic and demanding his role is. Moreover, it was eye opening to see just how far our Congressman had come in such a short time. As one of the younger representatives, it was apparent that his bipartisan reputation (a rare stigma in D.C.) has earned him respect on both sides of the aisles— and it would come as no surprise if the 37-year-old Representative from the 26th District of Florida is destined for greater roles in D.C.

1. Congressman Carlos Curbelo shows the Weekly’s Britt Myers the Republican ‘Cloak Room’ during a recent visit in the U.S. Capital. 2. Snow dotted the grounds of the Capitol building in Washington D.C. last week. 3. Curbelo stepped out of a Ways and Means Committee meeting to greet Myers.

But with monumental issues such as health care, climate change and VA measures on deck — I asked Curbelo what he was most looking forward to over the next few days. And with a sincere grin, the Congressman quickly replied, “I’m heading home today to see my family for a few days. And I can’t wait.” I also need to thank Nicole Rapanos, Charles Castagna, James Todd and Congressman Curbelo’s staff for their hard work, and also facilitating the visit.

rom just south of Nashville, Tennessee, Turner Harrison had no formal music education to speak of. “I just grew up playing with friends,” he said. “I started my first band when I was 14. We were ska punk and it made my high school years unforgettable.” Ask him the name of that first band and he lets out a small grin, “The band was called ‘Breakdown.’ Sure, we could have picked a better name, but in high school I made sure to do most things 60 percent of the way.” Since then, Turner surely cannot be accused of doing anything else 60 percent of the way. In 2010 he bought a sloop in Fort Lauderdale and shoved off on an adventure around the Caribbean – which lasted a year and a half until he “wanted to see trees again” – and he wound up in Key West trying to sell her. “Selling a boat doesn’t happen overnight, or over a hundred nights for that matter, so I wound up staying in Key West almost a year,”

said Harrison. It was during this unexpected year in Key West that he met Jeff Clark and Cayman Smith-Martin – the first two local musicians he began jamming with and playing with around town. With a formal education in design and spending time as a musician, a graphic designer and a multimedia artist, Turner landed a “real world job” (as he calls it) that took him to Prague, Czech Republic, once the sloop was sold. He’s been working hard ever since to find a way to pursue all of his interests, and after years of hard work he is now splitting his time between Key West and Europe, pursuing both musical and non-musical interests in each location. His band in Prague, TiNG (tingband.com) is releasing its third album in May. Locally, you can find Turner playing regularly at Blue Heaven, Salute and The Green Room. On Tuesdays, he teams up with Tony Baltimore at Sunset Pier at midday, and with Ross Brown and O’Horse in the trio “Malcolm and the Fiddle.”

S

idebar bartender T.J. was hanging out in Alaska when he met a few people on their way to Key West. Ready for a change and with a deep love for the ocean, he moved sight-unseen to the island nine years ago. Behind the bar at Sidebar, he said everyone’s been asking about Deep Eddy vodka lately. “It tastes great, and there are so many flavors,” he said. “Just add a little sprite, soda or water, and there is a delicious drink.” The charcoal filtered Texasmade flavors are never-ending from Ruby Red grapefruit to orange, to peach, cranberry and sweet tea. “I can make a sweet tea Deep Eddy drink with lemonade and it’s the perfect Arnold Palmer,” he said. While Sidebar doesn’t serve food, T.J. said Trolley Pizza next door is a perfect accompaniment to a late night of drinking. He also said the DJ, free pool with drink purchase, and video wall make for a cool hangout spot. “DJ’s love this place because it’s all the latest technology,” he said. His favorite part of working Sidebar is the owners. “They are warm and welcoming and very community oriented,” he said. When he isn’t working, he’s by the ocean, usually paddleboarding with his two rescue dogs. Sidebar is located at 504 Angela St. and open late night to 4 a.m.

B

esides a taxing district, Monroe County Tourist Development Company also collects quite a bit of information about our visitors — where they’re from, what they do when they’re here, where they stay and how much they pay to visit paradise. In both 2015 and 2016, the TDC sampled 3,600 visitors with a face-to-face survey and the resulting report compares and contrasts the data providing some interesting bits of data. For example, in the last year more visitors are arriving in their own personal vehicles, more friend groups are traveling to the Keys, and if tourists visits another city in Florida, they are choosing Orlando more often than Miami. Where the graphics indicate an increase or decrease, that is the difference between FY 2016 and FY 2015. Special thanks is owed to Kelli Fountain, director of market research at the TDC.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I am involved with Mu Alpha Theta and it is important to me because I like math. I am also involved with a couple extracurricular activities outside of school, like helping with my little brother’s hockey team. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? I have had several teachers who really inspired me, but I think the biggest one is Mr. Whaley because of how hard he made me work. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Mr. Whaley’s class best prepared me for life after high school because he was my pre-calculus and AP Calculus teacher. What is your favorite social medium and why? Whom do you follow? My favorite social media would have to be Instagram because it has multiple uses. I can connect with new people, talk to friends, and even catch up on recent events. I mainly follow friends and people who inspire me. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Two major challenges facing the Keys are drunk drivers and those crosswalks on the boulevard. For drunk drivers, there should be more night shift officers on duty, and for the crosswalks, we should just get rid of them because they have already caused several deaths and accidents. What are your plans after high school? I plan to go to college after high school. As of right now, I am unsure where, but I do know I will be staying in Florida. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? No, I like the cold and bigger cities.

A reception follows the Sunday concert. Tickets are $20 and available at keystix.com or at the door.

Plans are for a question and answer session with the local Keys residents involved after the film on Tuesday.

Compute the commute Largest employers aim for greenest trips

F

or one week, employees of 10 of Key West’s largest employers will see who can take the greenest way to work. From Monday, March 27 through Sunday, April 2, the workers will earn points for reporting their green methods for traveling to and from work. The third annual Green Commute Challenge creates a rivalry among the city’s largest employers because they can make the most difference in going green. This year’s challengers include: the City of Key West, the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County, Southernmost Beach Resort, Florida Keys Community College, the Monroe County School District, Tropical Soup Group (five restaurants), Keys Energy Services and the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District. This year two new competitors have entered the fray: the Pier House Resort and Spa and Monroe County.

Human-powered commuting – walking, biking, skateboarding and the like – gains the most points, but the challenge rewards everyone for being a part of the competition. Single drivers are encouraged to carpool to gain points, and this year there will be a double-points bonus day for employees who take the bus to work. Last year, standout participants included Tropical Soup group, who reported 46 percent of its employees biking and 17 percent walking. Southernmost Beach Resort, the grand prize winner, had its name engraved on the traveling plaque and will be defending its title in this year’s competition. —Contributed

Race recalls shipwreck tradition

T

he next installment of the Schooner Wharf Bar Wrecker’s Cup race series is set for Sunday, March 26 at 1 p.m. The race follows a seven-mile course from Key West Harbor to Sand Key, recalling the tradition of the wreckers in the Key West of the 1800s, who would race to save lives and/or salvage goods from shipwrecks. Vessels compete in different classes: classic, schooner, multihull, monohull over 40 feet, monohull 30 to 39 feet and monohull under 29 feet. The entry fee is $30. First, second and third places will be awarded in each division, with trophies, Pusser’s Rum ceramic flask, Schooner Wharf Bar Tabs and Wrecker tee shirts as prizes. Visiting yachters are invited to join in.

A captains’ meeting will be Saturday, March 25 at 7 p.m. on the Schooner Wharf’s Sail Loft with complimentary Pusser’s Rum Punch and hors d’oeuvres from the Schooner Wharf Galley. Participating vessels will be eligible for up to four BBQ dinners for captain and crew at the awards ceremony, where a video of the race will be shown. More information is available at schoonerwharf.com or by phone at 305-292-3302. —CONTRIBUTED
