LOCAL CHATTER

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / MARCH 17, 2017 GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

What do you get when you take a couple thousand college kids from all over the country, add a little beer and booze, shake vigorously, and pour them into Monroe County? You get Spring Break 2017 – Keys edition. Throughout the month, tourists and students from various states and colleges will cycle into the Keys, in what is considered one of the busier times of the year. Though the Keys are yet to become a destination completely inundated by the proverbial drunk Spring Breaker (sorry, Panama City Beach), the influx is distinguishable by the number of people complaining about traffic. So to minimize the number of spring breakers that locals will need to coach up, the Weekly asked…

What advice do you have for spring breakers? Alfredo Collado, of Island Grill, said, “Party at the sandbar. Booze cruise responsibly, and don’t drink and drive, or you’re assuredly going to jail.”

“Come down, have fun, respect the Keys, respect the locals, and don’t drink too much or get hurt,” said Char Dorst, manager at the Island Grill Mandalay location.

“Make sure you always have a designated driver, and if you plan on smoking what college kids smoke, bring enough,” said Ciara Diaz.

“Have a lot of fun, but make sure you have a designated driver. Hit up Robbie’s to feed the tarpon, check out the Lorelei for sunset, and rent some kayaks to go around the island,” said local hat artisan, Hatmon Do.

Tracy Curley, of Mangrove Mike’s Café said, “Wear sunscreen and don’t dive into the sandbar.”

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / MARCH 17, 2017

2016-2017 PERFORMING SEASON

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Back bills on clean water Monroe County has an opportunity, right now, to make a difference in Everglades restoration and shift toward the Florida Bay. Fifty-thousand acres of Florida Bay sea-grass died during the summer of 2015 because of hyper-saline conditions. With no way to get more fresh water in to the estuary, this situation was and will continue to be inevitable. SB10 and HB761 have been written specifically to address this problem. The bills will expedite the process of identifying land south of Lake Okeechobee to build a reservoir to store and clean water before sending it south. If these bills don’t pass, this process will be delayed until 2021. Science and unbiased professional opinion says we simply cannot afford to delay this process any longer. Now is not the time for complacency; the stakes are simply too high. As citizens of Monroe County we have a civil obligation to voice our concerns and opinions, and our representatives have an ethical responsibility to represent their constituents. We must stand in solidarity and urge them to support these bills. I know that politics are at work in shaping the future of how the Bay will fare, for me, my friends, and my parents who make their living here. You can speak up, write a letter, make a phone call, or even set up a meeting with your legislators to make a difference. I urge everyone in Monroe County to, at least, pick up the phone and call our local House Representative Holly Raschein (305453-1202) and Senator Anitere Flores (305-222-4117) to tell them to support these two bills. HOT AND SPICY Sauce and

seasoning masters redefine Keys heat GABRIEL SANCHEZ

H

gabriel@keysweekly.com

ere’s how two Keys masters came to create the hot sauces they love: Meet Justin Lee. In college, Lee would often get hot sauces as gifts. “I had so many I was collecting them, so I started mixing and making my own,” said Lee. “I use to carry it around in a Patron bottle, until people started asking for it.” Eventually he started growing peppers, cooking and experimenting. By 2003, his recipe was essentially mastered. “When I was playing in Fort Lauderdale, the restaurant our band played at kept insisting I start a company,” said Lee. “It seemed like a good idea, and mainly I just needed to have enough stock to supply myself, friends and family.”

Justin Lee, left, and Brian Doughetry are both sauce masters.

So in 2009 he started Hot and Tasty LLC, and Bone Lee Gourmet Hot Sauce was made available for purchase. Lee says his savory hot sauce has been designed to be on every table and every counter top in the country. “It was my personal recipe, and as soon as I started making it, I immediately got picked up,” said Lee. Originally, the recipe had to be toned down. Thankfully, Lee keeps much of his recipe simple, with most of the secret resting solely in the peppers and vinegar he uses.

And then something completely unexpected happened: Bone Lee Gourmet caught fire among hot sauce connoisseurs. Both nationally and internationally recognized now, some 2,000 bottles sell every 90 days. “I’m big in Switzerland, Singapore, England and Canada,” said Lee. “Anybody who likes to eat, I want to know them.” Moving forward, Bone Lee is planning to launch new sauces, Bone Lee Gourmet Mellow and Bone Lee Gourmet Reserve – the hotter stuff, which Lee mostly prefers.

Meet Brian Dougherty. Dougherty earned the nick name Señor Pelon (which translates to Mr. Hairless) while working in a local kitchen and fooling around with a mostly Latino cooking staff. “I’m a good cook, but no chef. I’m just a guy who cooks and enjoys it,” said Dougherty. Most of his general restaurant knowledge came from working in food and beverages since his early teens. Dougherty says he’s held every restaurant position at some point or another. But one day he couldn’t find anything in the store that was “worth a darn.” “Either it was too sugary or too salty,” he said. Having worked in smoke houses in Georgia, Colorado, Texas, Virginia, and the Carolinas, Dougherty began playing with spices to achieve the taste he desired. Señor Pelon’s first product, the BrainRub Dry Rub/Chili Powder, was born. The southern style cumin-based seasoning gets its kick from half a dozen different dried chili peppers, along with other traditional spices, like garlic and oregano. It’s ideal for those who like a little heat. “If you get a bit with a pepper in your bite, it’ll bite you back,” laughed Dougherty.

T

he emergence of the Carousers began when mandolin player Kris Bacen and guitarist Nick Kimball met. At first, the duo performed bluegrass tunes, old country hits, and classic rock. Then the two linked up with Brian Shervington, Cliff Stutts and Jimmy Lozar, after some friends recommended they jam. From there, the band developed their three piece and five piece arrangements. “The two have very different sounds,” said Kimball, who alternates between playing rhythm and lead, and has a rock background. Bacen’s background in bluegrass and folk music, and Lozar’s experience traveling in the 1970s playing blues harmonica, give the band an

authentic twang. Their bassist, Stutts, and drummer, Shervington, bring backgrounds in classical music, fusion and reggae. The band primarily does cover songs – including by the Grateful Dead, Tom Petty, The Doobie Brothers, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, and David Bowie – and some originals. This year their goal is to write, hit the studio, and produce their first original album. It’s been some time coming, since the band formed in 2012. The Carousers have played at the Florida Keys Brewing Co., Lorelei, Ocean-

view Sports Pub, and will be playing Dillons on Saint Patrick’s Day as well as Bay Jam. “We’re always looking for new places and people to play for. The last two summers, we’ve gone out to Montana and played our tours out west. We like to bring smiles to people’s faces and play great music,” said Kimball. More than anything, the Carousers say they aren’t about one lead man or individual. The entire band takes the ensemble approach and believes the music is stronger because of it.

sland Grill’s mixologist, Juan Cordero, has a knack for crafting cocktails. With eight years of experience, Cordero was once a manager in Washington, D.C., where one of his jobs was to formulate a completely new drink menu every 60 days. He created the “You’ll think of me in the morning,” which, with 18 different liquors, juices and liqueurs, is deceptive yet delicious. But he knows how to keep it simple too, so a Manhattan was his first recommendation. He crafts his with a good bourbon, sweet vermouth, a couple dashes of bitters, and garnishes it with a cherry. Cordero moved to Virginia 12 years ago from El Salvador. Never shying away from learning, Cordero would use his 90-minute commute to learn English. “I would practice English by spelling road signs on the way to work,” said Cordero. “I’ve learned more about life and history since I’ve taught myself English.” He lives with Crystal, his rescued pet rabbit. “She was five weeks old when the rescue said they couldn’t find her a home. Now she’s the most spoiled rabbit in the world,” he said. The Island Grill at Mandalay is at 80 E. Second St., MM97.5 oceanside, Key Largo.

KEYS HISTORY & DISCOVERY CENTER PRESENTS

CONNECTION BETWEEN SHIPWRECKS, TREE RINGS AND HURRICANES DR. VALERIE TROUET, UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

Trees remember hurricanes. A correlation between Spanish shipwrecks in the Caribbean and the thickness of tree rings found in pine trees from the Florida Keys has been discovered and the data proved sufficient to extend the Caribbean hurricane record all the way back to 1495. These fascinating connections will be explored by University of Arizona Associate Professor Valerie Trouet whose research aims to better predict future changes in hurricane activity at the regional scale (e.g., for the Florida Keys) through a better insight into past hurricane dynamics.

AFTER 19 YEARS, MANGROVE MIKE’S CAFE STILL A CATCH

I

t was back in February of 1998 that Islamorada Councilman Mike Forster opened the doors of Mangrove Mike’s Café. Fast forward 19 years and the restaurant is now one of the most popular eateries in the Upper Keys. “Mike is here every day and a great ambassador not only for the restaurant, but the community as well,” said five year employee Pam Schmidt. Forster’s commitment to Keys politics is rivaled only by his commitment to serving scrumptious food, particularly his breakfast menu. But the restaurant’s reputation for superior food has taken a team effort – from the highly entertaining “Grandma” Pat Ferguson, to the kitchen staff who have mostly stayed together for over a decade, like cook Fany Mendoza. “I’ve worked here for almost 13 years; we’re always busy, especially with the locals that come every day,” said Mendoza. “You make a lot of friends working here over the years, and I have special plates that I make for some of them.” As for her food recommendation, she says to try the cinnamon French toast and Kitchen Sink omelette. Other popular dishes are the lobster and hogfish Benedict and tater

3

tot tower, which often surprises guests with its enormous size. “We also make an amazing oatmeal. It comes with a mix of different berries, walnuts, brown sugar, as well as our French toast,” added Schmidt. The restaurant has seven separate types of French toast and pancake stack options, plus gluten free versions of both. Both have toppings like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, apples, and peaches. Its omelette and wrap section has 11 selections, with home fries, hash browns, grits, tater tots, or fruit salad. The eatery’s Mexican wrap, Popeye spinach wrap, and signature mangrove omelette with crabmeat, asparagus and lobster sauce, are all solid choices. The ambiance of the café brings out the feel of a true Keys food joint. “There are so many stories you can tell and hear by looking at the pictures on the wall. People come in and comment that the history of the Keys is sort of depicted on our walls,” said Schmidt. The walls of the café have been painted with numerous local fish and a “Pioneers and Legends” list of local back-country and offshore guides who have passed away. Patrons will also find pictures of dozens of locals and famous faces, like George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara Bush fishing the nearby waters. Jitarius Billafonté of Travis’ Tile-nAll says he was lucky enough to meet his future wife at the restaurant, after sometimes visiting twice a day. Mangrove Mike’s Café also caters weddings, private events, and office functions at reasonable prices. The café began a lunch program with Island Christian School to feed students and also supports local food banks to feed the less fortunate. Stop by Mangrove Mike’s and have breakfast at one of the most iconic eateries in the Upper Keys, located at Sunset Inn plaza at 82200 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada MM 82.2, bayside.

correlation between Spanish shipwrecks in the Caribbean and the thickness of tree rings found in pine trees from the Florida Keys has been discovered – and the data proved sufficient to extend the Caribbean hurricane record all the way back to 1495. The researcher who researched the link will speak next week in Islamorada. University of Arizona Associate Professor Valerie Trouet will speak on the “Connection Between Shipwrecks, Tree Rings and Hurricanes,” on Wednesday, March 22, at 6 p.m. at Keys History & Discovery Center at the Islander Resort, MM82, Islamorada. Doors open at 5 p.m. Trouet’s research aims to predict future changes in hurricane activity better at the regional scale (e.g., for the Florida Keys) through improved insight into past hurricane dynamics. Cost for non-Discovery Center members is $25 and includes light appetizers. A cash bar will be available. Reservations are recommended and can be made at 305-922-2237, online at keysdiscovery.com or via email to info@keysdiscovery.com. Trouet also will speak on Thursday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front St., Key West. —Contributed

Earlier that day, he will give a workshop to Key Largo middle school students. Farrell’s music is regularly played and featured on Public Radio International, and his “Codas” CD was the instrumental album of the year at the 7th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards. He has performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Carnegie Center, New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Memphis Acoustic Guitar Festival. Admission for the Tim Farrell concert is $15 and free for those 12 and under. More information, samples of his music, and tickets are available at keysice.com. ait, Kevin Rayburn is a musician? Yes, and so is the daughter of matriarch Sally Rayburn. Norbert Leo Butz and Schuyler Fisk will be part of the 23rd annual Bay Jam on Sunday, March 26, at Founders Park in Islamorada. The event also features homegrown Keys favorites like Leah Sutter, David and Nyan Feder, Alan Truesdale’s “Usual Suspects” and Steve Venini. “Many people might be surprised to learn that Norbert is a Tony awardwinning Broadway singer and performer known for his lead roles in the musicals ‘Rent,’ ‘Wicked,’ ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ and ‘Catch Me If You Can,’” said David Feder, president of Islamorada Community Entertainment, which produces Bay Jam. Butz, who plays Kevin Rayburn on “Bloodline,” sings and plays guitar, with his band of world-class stage and session players, said Feder. Fisk is the daughter of Sissy Spacek, the actress who played the matriarch of the Rayburn clan in the Netflix series set in the Keys. Fisk grew up in Virginia and performed in several movies (she starred in the 1995 film “Babysitters Club”) before turning to music. She will be playing with Virginians Carl Anderson and Sam Wilson. The New York Times praised Fisk, saying that her “Virginia roots show through in the loping cadence of her clear, remarkable voice.” Bay Jam was created to provide scholarships to Keys high school students to pursue music, dance, voice or the arts. The event is a family-friendly day. Concertgoers can enjoy a swim at the bay-front beach just steps away from the ICE Amphitheater stage, check out arts and crafts vendors from all over the country, and sample a variety of food and award-winning local beer. Attendees can bring blankets and lawn chairs, but coolers are not permitted. —Contributed

LUCK T OF THE CONCHRISH

St. Patrick’s Day Keys Style KARUNA EBERL

keberl@allaboutfloridakeys.com

he Keys may be 4,282 miles from Dublin, but come March 17 patrons at every drinking establishment from Key West to Key Largo will be clad in green and raising toasts to friendships, sunsets, fishing, puppies, green food coloring and whatever else comes to mind. Jameson will fill glasses and drinking songs will float across warm breezes. Many restaurants and dinner cruises will serve up Irish fare, and a few will go a bit further. Key Largo maintains two Irish traditions. March 11 brings the Upper Keys Irish Festival, with a parade, singing contest, live music, Irish dancing and plenty of corned beef, hosted at the Caribbean Club (MM 104, caribbeanclubkl.com). Then on March 17 proper, Snappers Oceanfront Restaurant & Bar continues the party with a parade and celebration (MM 94.5, snapperskeylargo.com). The biggest party in Marathon lands in Key Colony Beach, with its annual parade. Parade assembly begins at 4:30 p.m., with vehicles gathering at the 15th Street Circle and walkers meeting at Sunset Park. At 5 p.m., vehicles will start the parade, going to 14th Street toward Sunset Park, where walkers will join in. The route then follows Ocean Drive all the way to its end at First Street. The parade is followed by, you guessed it, corned beef. Sparky’s Landing serves that up, but the party overflows from there into all of the nearby bars as well, including Key Colony Inn, turning the evening into one, big festive block party (sparkyslanding.com). Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge cuts straight to the libations with its annual St. Patrick’s Day dance and beer drinking contest. The rules: wear green, form teams of six, try to win (MM 33, bpkfl.com). Nearby Boondocks Grill goes Irish with food, music and mini golf (MM 27.5, boondocksus.com).

The biggest Keys’ Paddy’s Day party, however, starts at MM 0. Every year Key West turns from “one human family” into one big Irish one. Not that anyone in Key West requires a holiday to drink and be merry, but this day comes as a fun excuse to bust out goofy hats, green Mardi Gras beads, green tutus, green … whatever the heart desires. This year marks the 39th annual St. Patrick’s Day Bar Stroll, which is actually on Saturday, March 18. Walk from the ocean to the gulf, and stop at most of the bars in between. Local Rick Dostal started the beloved Key West charity event in 1979 and diligently keeps it alive today. It was once a “run” between bars, but since running and chugging often ended with the beer back out on the sidewalk, it eventually became a stroll. A T-shirt and beer ticket is $30, and only an additional $10 for magic Irish boxer shorts. Don’t know what those are? Investigate at stpatricksdaybarstroll.com. For those who prefer a lessplanned day, all that’s in order is a walk through Old Town. Merriment spills out of every bar along Duval, along with plenty of live music, dancing jigs and green drinks. There are three Irish pubs in town: McConnell’s Pub & Grill (900 Duval), Shanna Key (1900 Flagler Ave.) and the perpetually celebratory Irish Kevin’s Bar (211 Duval), all of which up the traditional Irish food menu for the day. And don’t forget the sunset at Mallory Square — what better way to start off a lucky St. Patrick’s Day evening than by watching the elusive green flash at sunset.
