So, the Keys has this cute (horrifying) little saying: “Come on vacation, leave on probation” which it applies to Spring Breakers who go a little overboard while visiting the islands. And to be fair, in Key West they had this special mobile justice system — orange-vest/fine/volunteer hours while hung over — that is a fabulous deterrent. But in Marathon, which sees far fewer college break partiers, the effect is less obvious. We asked locals …

Do Marathon and Spring Breakers mix?

“They are good to have,” said Hendry Budi, a convenience store operator. Of course, he said, it’s not so good if the neighbor is old and the kids are “partying like rock stars.” “Lower Keys Medical Center was pleased to help recognize our neighbors whose efforts make a significant impact on our community,” says David Clay, LKMC CEO (pictured above, center) with CFFK Board Member Ron Burd, CFFK President/CEO Dianna Sutton, LKMC Chief Operating Officer John Emery, and CFFK Chair Roger Heinen.

Dr. Larry Hribar sees it as a positive, too. “I don’t think they cause a lot of trouble, but to be honest I think a lot of them pass through Marathon,” he said.

Paula Wolfe agrees. “Yes, they come into the barbershop in Gulfside Village and they are pleasant.”

“I think they do. I think it’s good to bring young people in town,” said Thea Ramsay.

y 12-year-old younger brother, Ivan Aldama Jr., had his motocross race bikes stolen in Miami-Dade County this past weekend. Although we live in Marathon, we travel all around the country racing professionally at many amateur events. (My brother is ranked top 10 in the country.) This past weekend someone stole all three race bikes, valued at around $15,000 each. We have contacted many newspapers and news channels to help us find my brother’s bikes. The family has also started a “go fund me” account to help my brother keep chasing his dreams. If you have any idea what happened to the bikes, please contact the police department in your area. Week 6 The teams with the highest percentage of weight loss from Feb. 6-13 are listed below.

The Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed at the top of the page every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders. Teams marked with an asterisk (*) had at least one member miss weigh-in. Although we still calculated the team’s percentage of weight loss, it was weight loss achieved over two weeks.

THINK “It’s no fun without food.” It’s amazing how many activities are paired with food — candy at the movies, margaritas on date night, coffee and doughnuts while reading the Sunday paper. It becomes a classic Pavlovian response. Eventually, eaters stop listening to hunger pangs or fitness cues and just eat on autopilot. Change your mind by altering your routine. If it’s your habit to eat nachos at the bar while watching the game, watch it at home with hummus and dip. Or just switch chairs. Instead of date night, plan active outings. — fitnessmagazine.com

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

THRUSTERS

COURTNEY GALANTINO/twistoffateimagery.com

Place your feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart, toes angled outward. Hold a dumbbell in each hand with an overhand grip. Rest each dumbbell on your shoulder with your palms facing away from you. Your elbows should be slightly elevated. Find a spot on the wall in front of you just below the ceiling line. You will keep your eyes fixed on this spot throughout the movement to ensure you do not allow your chest to fall forward and move your back to a weak structural position. Inhale as you drop into a full squat. Keep your heels on the ground and allow your knees to track outward. Slightly exhale as you return to the starting position, keeping the dumbbells at shoulder level. Snap your hips forward as your legs begin to reach full extension, and forcefully exhale. The hip movement, combined with your upward momentum, will launch the dumbbells upward from your shoulders. Use your arms to complete the movement until they are straight and the dumbbells are overhead. Your elbows should be in line with your ears at this point. Begin again by inhaling as you simultaneously begin to squat and lower the dumbbells to the starting position on your shoulders. The dumbbells should be resting on your shoulders before your upper thighs are parallel to the floor. — Liz Kuck, Keys Strength and Conditioning, keysstrength@gmail.com

LET FOOD FOR THOUGHT HELP YOU MELTDOWN!

Mini-egg frittatas These “egg muffins” are full of protein and veggies, and less than 80 calories each. Great for Whole 30, 21-Day Fix, or Paleo diets. INGREDIENTS: 10 large eggs 1 cup chopped bell peppers 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 cup cooked crumbled breakfast sausage, bacon or diced ham 1 cup chopped spinach 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a non-stick or silicone muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray. Heat olive oil into a non-stick frying pan over medium high heat. Add the bell pepper and onion and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the meat and spinach and cook an additional 2 minutes. Place 1 heaping tablespoon into each muffin cup. Next whisk the eggs into a medium size bowl. Stir in the salt and pepper. Then pour over the meat mixture in the muffin tin, leaving 1/4” from the top. Cook for 23 to 25 minutes, or until the egg has puffed and comes clean with a toothpick. After they are out of the oven, run a knife around the edges to pop the egg frittatas out. Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. Eat within 5 days. — iheartnaptime.net

n an abundance of caution, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam announced Thursday that a team of federal, state and local partners will continue to release sterilized flies for two more life cycles to protect Key deer from screwworms. “We’ve been talking with our federal partners about the ‘glide path,’” Putnam said referring to the agencies’ exit strategy, “which is a positive thing.” “I don’t expect to see another case,” said the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Dr. John B. Welch. So far, more than 140 million sterilized flies have been released to stop the spread of screwworm among Key deer in the Lower Keys. The agencies plan to leave an operational team in place to release two more batches of sterilized flies that would protect the herd through most of the fawning season. The interdiction stations, or the pet check at the top of Key Largo, could close as early as next week after having checked about 16,000 pets leaving the Keys.

The infestation was first detected in late September, and had everyone’s attention by October 2016. About 13 percent of the herd that originally numbered 1,000 has been euthanized. Putnam said the outbreak in the Keys was both a blessing and a curse. “The curse is that there are so many islands; the blessing is that there is only one way out and one way in and it’s such a distance from the mainland,” he said. All of the speakers — including Dr. Rebecca Bech of the USDA who leads the laboratory in Panama where the sterilized flies are incubated — praised the teamwork of the federal, state and local agencies and the vigilance and volunteerism of Keys citizens. “It was as bad an infestation as we’ve seen in the U.S., and certainly in Florida,” Putnam said. “But we are thrilled with the success of saving that species of deer and protecting the mainland from this scourge.”

‘I don’t expect to see another case.’ —Dr. John B. Welch, USDA

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

MARATHON WEEKLY / MARCH 17, 2017

KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

ANOTHER STARRING ROLE

D

evin Clarke, a 2005 Marathon High School graduate and Kit Kat Klub emcee in Marathon Community Theater’s “Cabaret,” is a jack of many trades. The always busy theater junkie is also an educator at Dolphin Research Center. Born in California, and moving to the Keys when he was 4 years old, he studied religion and culture at FSU and participated in the Marching Chiefs. “Going from the MHS Marching Band, with only 30 members, to the world’s largest collegiate marching band, around 600, was amazing,” he said. “I also became the captain of the color guard in the band for two years in a row.” His favorite part of working at DRC? “I get to connect guests to the stories of the dolphins, sea lions and birds that call DRC home,” he said. “I also get to help teach the future generations about conservation and the 3 R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle.” Continuing to add to his list of starring roles at the theater, he’s also been Max in “The Producers,” Paul in “Moon over Buffalo” and Max in “The Sound of Music,” and is on the board of directors for the theater. By the way, “Cabaret” runs through April 8. Hint, hint.

15 questions with Devin Clarke, dolphin whisperer and master of ceremonies 1. Nickname? Diva (from the Marathon Community Theater), Vones or Devonia (started at work and just stuck). 2. Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating. Who walks in and sits next to you? Elaine Stritch, even though she has passed. I think we would get along really well. She’s sassy, crass and just perfect. 3. How did you become involved in the theater? I asked my Grandma if I could audition. I don’t remember why I wanted to, neither does my grandma, but I did. I was cast in Fiddler on the Roof as an awkward, tone deaf 11-year-old. 4. Alan Cummings is within a 50mile radius and you randomly run into him. What’s the first thing you do/say? I would probably fangirl squeal. And, he would probably run off at that point. But if he didn’t, I would love to pick his mind about the character in “Cabaret” that he won the Tony for, that I get the honor of playing at MCT. I have some big combat boots to fill with this character.

5. What’s your funniest Keys story? It wasn’t funny at the time, but through a series of miscommunications, I was left in Key West by my friends. I waited by a car I thought was the one that we went down in, but I was wrong. I ended up falling asleep in the Courthouse parking lot, with a dead phone, and had to take the Key West city bus, eventually making it home. 6. Which TV or movie character is your alter ego? Tina Belcher from “Bob’s Burgers.” She is my spirit animal. Awkward but with the right amount of self-courage. 7. What would your superpower be? I would like the power to shapeshift into any animal I wanted! I could fly, swim, practically disappear and just experience the world as they do. 8. What is your nerdiest passion? Well, Broadway and theater would be the answer to that. I have a memory for lyrics, songs, dates, actors and actresses and anything else you could think of that comes along with Broadway musicals. 9. If you could take one item on a deserted island, what would you choose? Why? “How to Survive on a Desert Island for Dummies” because I wouldn’t know what to do.

10. What was your first thought this morning? The night before was our big dress rehearsal for “Cabaret” and the end is a very powerful reveal and I forgot to unbutton my bottom button on my jacket. So I woke up thinking, “That darn button!” 11. Favorite guilty pleasure? Re-watching episodes of RuPaul’s “Drag Race.” 12. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do/buy? Pay off my student loans! 13. If you could change the world, what would you do? I am a hippie at heart. Peace and love. But ultimately in a perfect situation it would be helping any individual that needs the basic necessities. 14. Who is your celebrity crush and why? Jonathan Groff. He is a Broadway actor originating roles in musicals like “Spring Awakening” and “Hamilton.” 15. Favorite place you’ve traveled to? Or, lived? NYC! The hustle and bustle, the arts districts and just the liveliness of the city was amazing.

City studies solutions for Coco Plum Beach

EXISTING ROCK REVETMENT

COASTAL EROSION: SARA MATTHIS

T

he City of Marathon is expecting the final draft of a plan to slow beach erosion at Coco Plum Beach. The report by Cummins Cederberg calls for five jetties and oval breakwaters that diminish in size from east to west. Currently, the sand washes away, all the way up to the sea oats.

The result is a “beach” that is completely covered in seaweed. Every two or three years, the city pays about $200,000 to replenish the sand. It also pays a contractor $87,000 a year to rake it twice weekly. “We can’t fight Mother Nature. A front can come in on a high tide and cover the sand with more seaweed and it looks like we haven’t touched it in weeks,” said Public Works Director Carlos Solis.

According to Coco Plum resident Linda Berrigan the problem started about eight years ago. “The state came in and cut down the Australian pines that were holding the beach together,” she said. That type of tree is not native to the state of Florida. There is no way to estimate the cost of the project until it’s further along. Many agencies — Army Corps of Engineers, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and state Department of Environmental Protection — will be involved, which also means the project may not start for one or two years, if

approved. If the project is built, some sand replacement will be necessary, but at much longer intervals. “At this point, we don’t know how much mitigation we might have to do, like replanting sea grass. That can affect the cost,” Solis said. Berrigan commends city staff and council for their work on this project. “So far, I am pleased with the effort the city has made to pursue the goal of stabilizing Coco Plum beach,” she said. “The city has been diligent and professional in pursuing the preservation of this beach. It is an asset to our entire city.”

IN MEMORIAM

MARATHON WEEKLY / MARCH 17, 2017

JESSICA LYNN IRWIN KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

Y

esterday I wrote the hardest 135 words of my life – my best friend’s obituary. Today isn’t any easier. It all began in the front row in Ms. Young’s fourthgrade class. She was a tiny blonde, too talkative, free spirit sitting right next to the goodie-goodie-criedwhen-she-forgot-her-homework me. We somehow got along really well after a few wet willy fights, helping each other with journal entries, and playing M.A.S.H. — some paper game where you figure out your whole life; she wanted a house, four kids and to be a stay at home mom, I wanted a shack, four marriages and Vegas. As time passed, we still had our fourth-grade friendship, this time with legal IDs. Jessica, with her bright eyes and smile, and still very loud mouth that would get us in trouble, could walk into any room and command it. We spent the next three years goading my brother Chase who wanted to duct-tape our mouths shut during hour-long car rides or anytime we were next to a pool table. Man, we had fun. Jumping in the marina at Hog Heaven at midnight, because some tourist didn’t think we would. (We won a $100 bet.) Then we’d dance all night soaking wet. Or, our season tickets to University of Miami games and “slipping” down 13 rows of stairs for front row seats. Some nights we would just stay in, drink wine, laugh. Once, and the details are a little blurry, we somehow ended up at a wild dance party at her parents’ house with all of the neighbors. Jessica was very close to her mother and family and adored them so much. After I got pregnant, our wild nights turned into icing cupcakes and her Swiffering my messy house. “Pumpkin,” what my daughters call her, was there for every major event in my kids’ lives from day one.

AUGUST 11, 1984 – MARCH 11, 2017

Jessica, left, and Kristen were life-long friends.

Cinco De Mayo will never be the same. She and I always spent it with Coronas, and sand, and friends, and adventures. A May 5 wedding date was a no-brainer when Travis and I got engaged. Jess helped me pick out my wedding dress (with a bathroom incident my mom will never forget), and fixed all the other bridesmaids’ hair before she worried about herself. She stood right next to me on the beach (after talking me down from the slice of pizza that almost made me a run-away bride) and held my eight-month-old daughter during the ceremony. Nights out were now dinners at my house playing “Left Right Center,” girls night sleepovers with the kids, pool dates, and lunches whenever we had a minute to catch up. It feels like yesterday, but three weeks ago Travis and I dropped by her perfectly decorated home. My daughters were playing with Mia, her dog, and the two cats in the yard. We just sat on her porch talking about life, like we always did. She was so easy to talk to. And, everything seemed fine. Looking back through the past six months of our texts, we should have seen each other a lot more than one lunch date, and a chance meeting. Those 30 text messages basically look like, “Hey, whatcha doing this weekend?” followed by “… at such-and-such, what about this day?” and “Hey, I know you’re super busy, but pool day soon,” followed by “Yes!” … and never a follow-through. I just wish, more than ever, that we had more time to make more unforgettable memories.

Celebrating a life Jessica Lynn Irwin was born on August 11, 1984 at Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon and died on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at her home on Conch Key. She was a lifelong resident of Marathon and a graduate of Marathon High School in 2002. She is survived by her parents Bruce and Letty Irwin, sister Chelsey, brother Ryan (Nicole) and nephew Wyatt, and her extended Irwin and Cassidy family. Her family welcomes anyone who wishes to attend the celebration of her life on Saturday, March 18 at 4 p.m. at Kirk of the Keys in Marathon. She loved spending time with her family and close friends, and being on the water. She will be remembered fondly by all who loved her for her bright smile, her small stature, and her huge heart.

he 41st annual Marathon Seafood Festival took place last weekend at the Community Park. Thousands and thousands of visitors and locals poured through the gates to eat the food, volunteer at the booths and kick up their heels to great music for two days. It’s put on by the Marathon Chamber of Commerce and Marathon chapter of Organized Fishermen of Florida. Proceeds benefit local causes and student scholarships in the Keys. — Weekly Staff report JASON KOLER/Keys Weekly and LARRY BENVENUTI & FELIX HILARY/Contributed 1. The festival was blessed with the return of the ‘fly over’ from jets stationed at Boca Chica NAS. 2. The ‘balloon man’ twists up colorful creations, while traversing the grounds on stilts! 3. The dinner plate at the festival is heavy, but made light by the work of many hands. 4. Tina Boan, left, Lisa Tennyson, Roman Gastesi, Kristy Callaway, and Commissioner David Rice represent Monroe County government. 5. Marianne Benvenuti digs in her purse for the $5 admission.

ait, Kevin Rayburn is a musician? Yes, and so is the daughter of matriarch Sally Rayburn. Norbert Leo Butz and Schuyler Fisk will be part of the 23rd annual Bay Jam on Sunday, March 26, at Founders Park in Islamorada. The event also features homegrown Keys favorites like Leah Sutter, David and Nyan Feder, Alan Truesdale’s “Usual Suspects” and Steve Venini. “Many people might be surprised to learn that Norbert is a Tony awardwinning Broadway singer and performer known for his lead roles in the musicals ‘Rent,’ ‘Wicked,’ ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ and ‘Catch Me If You Can,’” said David Feder, president of Islamorada Community Entertainment, which produces Bay Jam. Butz, who plays Kevin Rayburn on “Bloodline,” sings and plays guitar, with his band of world-class stage and session players, said Feder. Fisk is the daughter of Sissy Spacek, the actress who played the matriarch of the Rayburn clan in the Netflix series set in the Keys. Fisk grew up in Virginia and performed in several movies (she starred in the 1995 film “Babysitters Club”) before turning to music. She will be playing with Virginians Carl Anderson and Sam Wilson. The New York Times praised Fisk, saying that her “Virginia roots show through in the loping cadence of her clear, remarkable voice.” Bay Jam was created to provide scholarships to Keys high school students to pursue music, dance, voice or the arts. The event is a family-friendly day. Concertgoers can enjoy a swim at the bay-front beach just steps away from the ICE Amphitheater stage, check out arts and crafts vendors from all over the country, and sample a variety of food and award-winning local beer. Attendees can bring blankets and lawn chairs, but coolers are not permitted. —Contributed

MHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

MARATHON WEEKLY / MARCH 17, 2017

33

Faculty and students at Marathon High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students stand out amongst their peers and are recognized by the Weekly Newspapers. What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I am part of the MHS Culinary team and it is important to me because I want to be in the culinary field when I graduate and participating in competitions is a good way to show off my skills.

SENIOR

CHRIS GASKILL

Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why? My biggest inspiration at MHS is Chef Stanton, because he is the one who introduced me to culinary and who has taught me a lot. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? I guess I’m not hip enough to have an Instagram or Snapchat account, but you can see photos of MHS Dolphin Bistro’s work on Instagram at MHS_ dolphin_bistro. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenge facing the Keys is the lack of culture. Being from a family of classical musicians and working as one, it’s hard to compete with Buffet by playing Bach down here. I would like to see some more emphasis on music appreciation in the school, especially in the elementary schools. What are your plans after high school? My plans are to attend culinary school, then maybe open a restaurant. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I do not think I will make the Keys a permanent home. I am originally from the New York City area and wish to go back to live with my brothers in Brooklyn. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … how much I miss the civilized world, where there are Starbucks and Chipotle.

The Art Studio

T

here’s an art to glass, and an art to coffee. Donald McMullen knows them both. (Okay, he also knows the “art” of a wall ball at Keys Strength and Conditioning where he goes four times a week, but that’s another story.) The ice mocha is a fabulous combination of milk (choices abound — full, half, almond), Ghirardelli chocolate sauce and gourmet beans ground fresh for each cup from a Latin American source. Oh my. It pairs nicely with glass. Seriously. The brew keeps patrons of The Art Studio properly focused on their tasks. McMullen is, himself, a glass artist or glass blower, except he uses the borosilicate type of glass (Pyrex) to make globes, pendants and knobs all on display at the art space in the Middle Keys. Right now, it’s all commission work but look for him to start selling and showing on a commercial scale. “If you need a set of custom kitchen knobs for your renovation, I’m your guy,” McMullen said. Originally from Minnesota, McMullen and his fiancée Christina are tying the knot next year in Louisiana. That’s a long way off, so in the meantime stop off for a cup of the new slow brew, slow drip coffee made in a sci-fi type contraption of glass tubing and beakers. It’s really slow — like three hours to make one cup. No worries, though, batches are made ahead of time and stored in the fridge. The coffee has a tea consistency, the potency of an espresso, and the chill temps of an iced coffee drink. This is a must-try. The Art Studio is located at 12535 Overseas Hwy. in Marathon.

Event celebrate wildlife refuges

A

weeklong celebration of the “cousin” of the national parks continues through Saturday with several events on Big Pine Key. Outdoor Fest – filled with familyfriendly, mostly free outdoor adventures and hands-on activities – runs through Saturday, March 18. It’s a celebration of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex and the Friends group FAVOR. “The National Wildlife Refuge System is part of America’s network of amazing public lands, with refuges being the ‘cousin’ of America’s National Parks,” said ranger and outreach coordinator Kristie Killam. “We’re really fortunate to have these areas for people to visit and enjoy nature.” The Outdoor Fest was created to remind people of the natural resources available in the Keys and encourage them to get outside, while promoting an understanding and appreciation of the refuges – home to some of the world’s most endangered habitats, plants, and wildlife species, including the endangered Key deer. The Keys are home to four national wildlife refuges – National Key Deer, Crocodile Lake, Great White Heron, and Key West National Wildlife Refuges. This year’s fest kicked off in Key Largo at Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This weekend, events ranging from star-gazing to kayak tours and more are scheduled on Big Pine Key. For more information about the refuges, FAVOR, and the event, visit www.favorfloridakeys.org/outdoorfest or contact Kristie Killam at 305.304.9625 or email Nancy or Jan at flkeysoutdoorfest@gmail.com. -Contributed

ftentimes, I take pen in hand (well, fingers to keyboard) to write about the things that irritate us, the things that make our lives less than pleasant. It’s the curmudgeonly thing to do, and seeing as I’ve been a bit of a curmudgeon since my mid-teens, this column can be somewhat of a safety valve for the collective tensions boiling inside all of us. But not today. Today, I want to reflect on a pretty incredible week. Let’s start with the 41st annual Original Marathon Seafood Festival, now in our rearview JOHN mirror. What an BARTUS amazing festival it was! First of is a City Council member and a all, thanks to former Mayor of our commercial the City of Marafishermen and thon. John is also the Organized a musician who Fishermen of performs around town at various Florida, Maraestablishments. thon Chapter. They are our community’s heritage, and without them, there would be no seafood to inspire a festival! Thanks to the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce, the other event host, that partners with the fishermen to put on this awesome event. Thanks to the festival committee (on which I sit, as a matter of disclosure), our myriad volunteers and workers and sponsors who make everything happen. And thank you to the City of Marathon (another organization with which I have some familiarity) for providing an event site and valuable services. Personally, I’d like to thank all the people who make the festival a musical success year after year. Our performers and bands bring their A-game and great attitudes to the festival stage, and I am grateful. My partners in sound, Glenn Faast and Kris Estes, go above and beyond every hour they put in. Thanks to my bandmates: Glenn, Adrienne Z, Rob Garza, and Steven Miller. It is a privilege to make music with you. Thanks to our setup stage crew

assistants Bruce, Sherri, and Danny. And special thanks to our late Sunday speaker-lifting stage crew: City Council Member Steve Cook and City Manager Chuck Lindsey. Switching gears, I’d like to thank Monroe County Mayor George Neugent for spearheading an effort through our municipalities and not-for-profits all the way to the TDC and County Commission. This past Wednesday, the county voted to put the cities on equal footing with the county on bricks and mortar bed tax dollars for reimbursement of visitor-related projects, and to give our not-forprofits a better deal and a fair shake when applying for those funds as well. Former Islamorada Mayor Deb Gillis asked George why the cities were eligible for only 50 percent reimbursement while the county was eligible for 100 percent. George raised the idea with me on Election Day last year as we both stood holding signs at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Sombrero Beach Road. Meetings (a lot of them) ensued, all Keys municipalities unanimously passed a resolution asking for equal treatment drafted by Marathon Deputy City Manager George Garrett after these meetings, and now the county has followed through by adopting the objectives stated in the resolution. Thank you George and the rest of the commission for standing behind fairness and equity. Finally — and I bet you’re not going to see this one coming — I’d like to thank Comcast. (W-h-a-a-t?) It seems my column two weeks ago rattled some cages in the Xfinity hierarchy. Since then, I have been in contact with a senior director of customer experience in the main offices in Philadelphia, along with a member of the Florida leadership team. Both apologized for the unreliable service and my treatment while in the clutches of Comcast customer support. Not only that, they both told me that Comcast was committing extra resources and personnel to solve the problems plaguing us here. This is a quote directly from an email I received: “We certainly still have a lot of work to do but please know that the focus on the customer experience is there from the highest levels of the company.” It’s a start. And with that, a grateful curmudgeon saves a document and moves on … John Bartus performs Friday with Adrienne Z at St. Pat’s Day at the Key Colony Inn, Saturday evening solo at the Key Colony Inn, and Sunday and Monday evenings at the Hyatt Place Faro Blanco.
