KEY WEST WEEKLY / MARCH 17, 2017 HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

It’s time to switch gears and think of all the possibilities, opportunities and happy likelihoods for the new amphitheater. It will be here, decorating our skyline, sooner than we know it, so let’s daydream for a minute. Imagine biking through your own neighborhood, enjoying the setting sun with your friends, and being yards away from your favorite rock star, WOW. So we asked locals…

Who should be the opening act for the new amphitheater?

“Ty Dolla Sign,” said Audrey Samz, “I’m a hip hop rap chick.” (Yea, I didn’t know him either).

“The triple threat – Michael McDonald, Bob Seger, and Kenny Loggins,” said Brad Garrison of Mary Ellen’s Bar, “because they have the best hair in the business.” That would be the ultimate hair band.

“Ben Harper,” said Jen White, just the right music for a Key West sunset on the waterfront.

“If the Rolling Stones can play in Cuba, then they should come here too,” said long-time local Kit Carson – hopefully, correct.

“The remaining Beatles,” joked Kurt Fazekas, “all two of them.” In case you are wondering that would be Paul and Ringo.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

KEY WEST WEEKLY / MARCH 17, 2017

S

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

20 Questions with Scott Duszynski, president and CEO of The Keys Federal Credit Union 1. Full Name? Scott Duszynski 2. Worst nickname? Not worst, but only one … that I know of. Scooter (Scoot for short). 3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life; why? George Washington. I’d really like to ask just how far off we are from what they thought our country should be like. 4. What question do you hate to answer? Any question that has the phrase “you people” in it! 5. What’s your favorite TV or movie about banks or bankers? “It’s a Wonderful Life.” 6. If you won the lottery, what extravagant thing would you do? Go on a month-long vacation with my entire family (Mom, Dad, brothers, sister, nieces and nephews!)

10. If invisible, what would you do in Key West? Probably go around town doing random things to help the ghost tour give guests something crazy to talk about!!

NO SECRET

cott Duszynski, president and CEO of The Keys Federal Credit Union, truly loves what he does and his success is apparent and remarkable. Arriving from Indiana 22 years ago, Duszynski worked every banking position (accounting, IT, manager, CFO, executive VP to CEO) while being equally involved in the Keys community. His team at the Credit Union created a special “NO” sign for Duszynski because he has an inability to say it to anyone. “I like to help,” Duszynski, “I’ve been a part of many organizations, helped on numerous fundraisers and run four marathons.” With a charming smile, affable wit, and as he says, “an unrealistic view of the world – I want everyone to be happy,” Duszynski is leading the credit union to all time levels of progress. The Credit Union now has 51 employees and significant new technology. A “yes” from Duszynski certainly means success.

7. Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Mr. Potter (from “It’s a Wonderful Life”). 8. What is your nerdiest passion? Putting everything into Excel!

9. If you could take three items on a deserted island, what would you choose? Why? Machete, tarp and water. I’d take these things so I would be able to create shelter and make things to survive.

11. What was your first thought this morning? What the heck did I do yesterday to make my back hurt so bad? 12. Favorite guilty pleasure? Watching the British series “MI-5” over and over. 13. What’s the funniest thing you have seen at the bank? When someone dressed up as Cupid for a credit-card promotion. It was supposed to look like some sort of toga but really looked like a big ole diaper. 14. What dream job – if not this one – would you have? Professional wish granter! 15. If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? A solution to the affordable housing situation … once and for all! 16. You are sitting at a diner counter eating; whom would you want to walk in and sit next to you? Dolly Parton. She has the most amazing attitude and outlook on life! Finish these sentences: 17. My family would describe me as … someone that likes to make people laugh, albeit unintentionally at times! 18. My autobiography would be titled … “Never Give Up.” 19. If I could, I would be … someone that can sing well! 20. When I go, I will go … with a smile on my face.

“You can do really good things, be professional, be productive and still have fun.” —Scott Duszynski, CEO of The Keys Federal Credit Union

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

A Day to Honor Our Doctors – March 30th

The health care environment is in perpetual change, brought on by scientific breakthroughs, technological advancements, government regulations and reform. But there is one constant: physicians still shoulder the ultimate responsibility for a patient’s care, whether it be in the emergency room, on the operating table or in a clinic. From the days of Hippocrates, doctors have held the fate of their fellow human beings in their hands – and certainly in their hearts. That is why we pause on Doctors’ Day each year to thank the men and women who made the decision to embrace the strenuous journey to become a physician. We at Lower Keys Medical Center are grateful for the physicians who work in our hospital, centers and clinics. We celebrate and honor their commitment to their profession, our mutual patients and our community. It is so easy to marvel at the almost miraculous life-saving tools that medicine employs today. And just as easy to become frustrated with medicine when chronic disease, terminal illness and horrific accidents win the battle over a doctor’s most drastic lifesaving measures. It is too easy to forget that a physician – the healer, the comforter, the saver of lives – is a human. The same doctor who was triumphant in making a diagnosis in a perplexing case then has to deliver that news to a patient and family. A pediatrician who treats a severely injured or ill child may go home and tuck in her own little one. A longtime family doctor caring for a patient declining with age and illness may be facing the same challenges with his or her own elderly parent. On March 30th, we take time to thank our medical staff members for their unwavering care to the thousands of lives we touch each year. We thank them for working weekends and holidays and for responding to emergency calls that may take them away from a family dinner or a child’s birthday party. The physicians who serve our hospital and clinics all have their own stories to tell, tales of heroic measures inside our walls and in our community. This Doctors’ Day, and every day, we acknowledge their contributions, skills, sacrifices and commitment to and for our community. — Lower Keys Medical Center Board of Trustees and Employees

M 3 M FULFILLS DESIRE

‘I get to pick some really wonderful movies’ M 3 M stands for Movies on the Third Monday, but the next two showings are actually on Tuesdays. After April, the series will resume in November.

“Man is born to seek power, yet his actual condition makes him a slave to the power of others.” – Hans Morgenthau

hen Maxine Makover unexpectedly came across some extra money earlier this year, she knew she wanted to do something good with it. She has a passion for movies, as an executive producer of two successful independent movies: “Any Day Now” with actor Alan Cumming, a movie that went on to be the number one independent film in Japan, and “The Space Between,” which was picked up by USA Network for its 9/11 storyline. “I secretly have always wanted a movie theater,” she said. So, she donated her newly acquired movie equipment to Congregation B’nai Zion, 750 United St., and started the M 3 M movie series. “I get to pick some really wonderful movies to show the community.” On Tuesday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m., the 2013 documentary “Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love” will be shown. It chronicles the life and music of Hamlisch, and features Woody Allen, Barbra Streisand and AnnMargret. Waterfront Playhouse Artistic Director Danny Weathers, who was in “A Chorus Line,” will be on hand to talk about his experiences with Hamlisch. On Tuesday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m.,

“Morgenthau,” winner of a New York Emmy for Best Historical Program, will be shown. The documentary follows three generations of a Jewish-American family’s dynasty at the forefront of the 20th century’s most dramatic social and political moments. The film includes former President Bill Clinton, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, former New York mayors Rudy Giuliani and Ed Koch, and journalist and author Tom Brokaw. Since being founded in 1887, Congregation B’nai Zion has been a vital part of Key West. With this new outreach initiative showing films that enrich, educate and entertain, Makover, who has vacationed in Key West for 23 years, and moved permanently in 2006, wants to help continues the synagogue’s long history of community involvement. Reservations are not required, but seating is limited. Refreshments and desserts will be served after the screening. The series is open and free to anyone. Donations are welcome. SPCA 10TH SPRING SOCIAL Celebrating ground-breaking of new facility KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

T

en years ago at the Elks Club in Key West, the first Florida Keys SPCA Spring Social was held. From there the event grew to Freddy Cabana’s hangar at Key West Airport and then to its current location on the greens at Key West Golf Club. This year on Friday, March 24 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., the FKSPCA will be hosting its annual Spring Social and honor those who started the event 10 years ago. Those being honored include longtime Florida Keys SPCA volunteers Lisa Cowen, Georgia and Tom Favelli, and Christopher Rounds, who knew firsthand how urgent the need was for a new shelter. Rounds put together a menu and Cowen collected silent auction items for the very first Spring Social, and as they say, the rest is history. “The Spring Social is now our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Tammy Fox, FKSPCA executive director, citing special events and volunteer coordinator Tiffany Burton and her team for their amazing work. “The dream of a small group of friends is making a huge difference in the lives of the staff and volunteers of the FKSPCA and the animals in their care.” This year’s Spring Social features Tom Luna as emcee; Josh Ramsteck and Bassman Bill as entertainment; beer from Florida Keys Brewing Company; and chefs Martin Liz and Christopher Rounds providing dinner. The event features one of the largest silent auctions on the island, and a live auction as well. VIP and general admission tickets are available starting at $55 at keystix.com, or at the shelter at 5230 College Rd. Tickets include dinner and a beer and wine open bar; there will be a cash liquor bar. Parking will be at Florida Keys Community College with Historic Tours of America trollies running guests back and forth to the party.

This silent and live auction will be huge! Auction items include a signed Kenny Chesney guitar, an Archeo rug valued at $6,000, a stay at Little Palm Island, Napa Valley and Puerto Rico trip, and a private cocktail party for up to 25 people at Curry Mansion Inn. Not to mention all the other items like kayaks, signed books, doggie and kitty swag, and more.

FLORIDA KEYS SPCA BY THE NUMBERS $55 general admission, $125 VIP admission

MONDAY, MARCH 20 AND THE TONY GOES TO...

Since 1999, Florida Keys SPCA’s low-cost or free spay/neuter clinic has serviced more than 13,000 animals. Almost 3,000 animals came through the doors at both the Key West and Marathon campus in 2016. 419 animals were reunited with their owners last year. The capital campaign to build the new shelter began about three years ago. The new shelter will be 23,000 square feet, about the same size as the present facility but under one roof rather than several ramshackle buildings. Almost $700,000 - how much the Spring Social has raised since its inception. Currently, there are 166 animals waiting for fur-ever homes in Key West, and 78 animals at the Marathon campus. More than 500 people will attend this year’s Spring Social. 600 items will be in the silent auction, and there will be 7 live auction items.

Repairs to Palm Avenue Bridge set for summer

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

H

ere we go again, with Key West’s necessary evil: road construction. The Palm Avenue Bridge, maintained by Monroe County not the city of Key West, is in dire need of a facelift. But before everyone declares the sky is falling, Judy Clarke, Monroe County engineering director, has a plan. Pending design approval from Florida Department of Transportation, which is granting $1.4 million toward the overall $1.8 million project, construction could begin as early as June and last an estimated six months. Once the design is approved, the county will be able to advertise for contracting bids. The majority of the work will take place this summer, including nighttime closures, but will be suspended for holidays and special events such as mini lobster season. “Keys bridges, mostly built at the same time, were expected to last fifty years,” said Clarke, “This will add fifteen to twenty more years. When maintenance only lasts five years or less, then we have to look at other options such as rebuilding.” The bridge, built in 1965, now has 52 years of wear and tear as the potholes aptly demonstrate.

Construction will include repairing the deck, sidewalks, support beams, navigational lights, the road leading to the bridge, and lastly, replacing the limerock base with asphalt. Using an apshalt base will allow the road to be used the next day. Clarke has estimated eight nights of construction between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., with one lane open to traffic. Another inconvenience could be repairs done below the bridge. If needed, a barge will be brought in that would force the channel to close, but that cannot be foreseen until the contractor creates a pre-construction plan. “We will make sure the contractor coordinates with all entities impacted by construction, such as City of Key West and harbor officials,” said Clarke. “We have tried to account for all possibilities. “Based on the information, construction should have little effect on the marina; we have several entrances,” said Doug Bradshaw, port and marina services director. “I think things should go smoothly, and we should be able to make any arrangements for customers and vessels ahead of time if something changes.”

“We will be working to keep the road open as much as possible.” — Judy Clarke, of Monroe County engineering director.

The Palm Avenue Bridge in Key West will be repaired this summer. HAYS BLINCKMANN/Keys Weekly

he Bone Island ’Bones are back. The group, three trombones and rhythm section, will give its 11th annual jazz concert at the Little Room Jazz Club, 816 Duval St., on Wednesday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m. The group consists of Joe Dallas Jr., his father Joe Dallas Sr. and Harry Schroeder on tenor trombones. The bass trombone slot will be filled by Georges Hemund on baritone sax. Schroeder said the band’s name “has kind of a clunky rhythm. It certainly doesn’t swing. But ‘The Hip Bones’ seemed too strong for a group that plays, among other things, some oldfashioned blues and an old tune called ‘New Orleans,’ and nobody wanted ‘The Funny ’Bones.’ And this one at least fits.”

All of the musicians are regular players with the Paradise Big Band. Joe Sr. is a regular visitor as trombone soloist. The rhythm section is Tim McAlpine, guitar; Bubba Low Notes, bass; and Skipper Kripitz, drums.

“Four trombones is a lot of weight to push around,” Schroeder says, “but this rhythm section can do it. They all have great time, as well as being inventive and tasteful soloists.” Trombone quartets go back many years, to Beethoven and beyond. They became popular in the ’50s and ’60s, when the great jazz trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding put several such groups together. The Bone Island ’Bones is dedicated to continuing that tradition. All the charts were written by Schroeder for the group: many of them have never been heard before. — Contributed

artender Merri Brown landed in Key West a lot like many others — she was tired of cold winters up north and she knew someone who was already in town. Making a call to her sister, Janine, who also bartends at Pier House, she had a place to stay and a line on a job at the waterfront beach bar at Pier House. “Look at my office,” she said recently while shaking up cocktails for the Habitat for Humanity concert fundraiser on the beach. “You can’t beat a view like this.” She said the most popular cocktail at the beach bar is, without a doubt, the Pier House Punch made with four different liquors. “It’s a show to watch any of the bartenders make it,” she said. “We’ve perfected the art of the pour; three bottles at the same time.” When she isn’t working, she’s enjoying good food and spirits all over town. “When I’m not here, I want to be served,” she said. The Pier House is located at 1 Duval St., Key West.

here is a reason rock stars are called legends, and Gene Simmons of KISS lives up to every single expectation. Millionaire Gallery, owned by Michael Rypel and Bruce Matthews, hosted Rock Lives On, a spectacular Gene Simmons master class on March 11 and 12 on Duval Street. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 20 individuals to learn songwriting from the star and basically jam with Simmons and KISS drummer Paul Bassett for a few hours. Simmons was tough but inherently kind as he guided, pushed and worked his students on chords and lyrics. He commanded the room with a fast wit, extended fist bumps like pieces of gold, and made everyone feel special. Simmons might have the tough exterior of “The Demon,” his stage persona, but politics aside, he filled the room with a sense of fortitude and positivity. His favorite song? “Smile” written by Charlie Chaplin. What does Siri call him on his iPhone? “My Lord and Redeemer.” His response to being asked to stick out his infamously long tongue? “No thanks, the floor’s dirty.” When a pretty girl walks in a room? They get a direct stare with the comment “I like girls.” Nobody in the room walked away without learning to toughen up a little, be better at everything and for “$&@#’s sake, enjoy yourself.” —Weekly Staff report HAYS BLINCKMANN/Keys Weekly 1. At Millionaire Gallery, Simmons comes off stage to teach the class of 10 — while friends, family and paying audience members watch. 2. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Since we are so small, we don’t have as much as the mainland. For example, specialists. I have a rare disease that requires a special doctor. We don’t have one down here, so I have to travel three hours away every couple of months just to see my doctor. What are your plans after high school? I am going to the University of Denver and hope to get my degree in biology or criminology. It’s been my dream to become a NICU nurse. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I have lived in Key West my whole life and it’s the only place in Florida I like. I’m not sure if I will make it my permanent home, I have to experience other places first.

laywright Mark St. Germain likes to ask “What if?” and applies that question to historical figures whose lives and exploits pique his imagination. He’s taken audiences inside the cluttered Harlem home of the Collyer brothers in “Dancing Lessons”; given them imagined conversations between C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud in “Freud’s Last Session” and between literary giants F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway in “Scott and Hem.” Now, St. Germain will give us his take on Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and President Warren G. Harding in “Camping with Henry and Tom,” opening at the Red Barn Theatre, 319 Duval St., on Tuesday, March 28. The play, starring Barry Tarallo as Ford, Richard Grusin as Edison, and Michael McCabe as Harding, is directed by Murphy Davis and runs Tuesdays through Saturdays, through April 15. All curtains are at 8 p.m. There will be a reduced-price preview on Monday, March 27. “A play like this is my take on the truth and the personalities they involve,” said St. Germain, “a combination of facts, and fiction when interpreting those facts through dialogue.”

In “Camping with Henry and Tom”, Germaine starts with an actual camping outing taken by Ford and Edison in 1921. He uses poetic license to add Harding, who never made the historical trip. Documented quotes and biographies paint a realistic picture of this trio, whose private personas often differed significantly from the personalities offered to the public. The play touches on political maneuvering (Ford thinks he should be President and has nothing but contempt for a Harding he sees as weak) and judges of the modern age (“We’re toymakers, Henry,” says Edison. “That’s all we are.”). It’s an exploration of friendship, politics, and leadership. “That’s what I like to do,” said. “I just try to get into the minds of people who are fascinating and have changed the world in some way,” said St. Germain. Audiences will find resonance with today’s political landscape and upheaval with many of the themes touched upon and lines delivered. The play won Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle Awards in its New York premiere. Tickets are available by visiting redbarntheatre.com/tickets or calling 305-296-9911. There will be a catered opening night after-party in the theatre’s courtyard, where ticket holders for that performance can mingle with cast and crew. —Contributed

Ecurie Vitesse Sports Car Club’s holds March Madness

W

hat does it mean to be a car enthusiast? Just ask Joelle Fuller and her husband, Skip Taylor, vice president of the Ecurie Vitesse Sports Car Club and within minutes, it is wonderfully apparent. Driving can be an engaging hobby, albeit expensive, but under the right circumstances,

incredibly fun, challenging and thrilling. This Sunday, March 19, at the Florida Keys Community College, Fuller and Taylor will be behind the wheel for the club’s technical driving course and invite any driving enthusiast to join. “It starts simple; you do a race or technical challenge,” says Taylor. “Then your car ends up morphing with new rims, race tires, then you play with the engine-and then it’s a whole new car and you love doing it every weekend.” Not ones for the Key West nightlife, the couple see the car club as not just a hobby but a lifelong passion. This isn’t the Keys version of Fast

and Furious. Autocross is a timed competition on a defined course that tests technical skill. Drivers do not simultaneously race against each other but against the clock in 20 various classes depending on make of car and size of engine. The Coast Guard and Navy introduced autocross to the Keys in the mid-’60s. Back then, courses were constructed in Peary Court, Searstown parking lot and the Kmart lot in Marathon. As the races grew, locals joined such as Fuller’s parents, Jack and BJ Fuller, and it came under direction of residents. Fuller has been a part of racing since childhood and Taylor joined the club in 1983. “People join from all walks of life – lawyers, doctors, housewives – but it’s really for anyone who wants to be a better driver,” said Fuller. She and Taylor share an ’05 Mini Cooper, meaning they are in the same class racing against each other. Any type of car can race as long as it passes safety inspection with good tires, mufflers and seat belts. So don’t be surprised to see a Porsche or Lotus waiting in line behind a Miata or Subaru. There is a steadfast group of six to seven locals who maintain the club and host course events throughout the Keys, such as the 1.7-mile course recently on Loop Road in Lower Sugarloaf and BayBottom Crawl.

Targeting derelict vessels Removals planned at Marquesas Keys

The map shows the locations of the derelict vessels, which are strewn along six islands of the Marquesas Keys. MONROE COUNTY MARINE RESOURCES OFFICE/Contributed

T

o restore shoreline and nearshore habitats in the once pristine and remote Marquesas Keys, the Monroe County Marine Resources Office is leading a $61,200 project to remove up to 32 abandoned and derelict vessels and their associated debris. This project will begin Sunday, March 12, weather permitting, and be completed by April 1, the start of bird nesting season. The Marquesas Keys, about 17 nautical miles west of Key West, are located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. These islands have been a historic landing spot for Cuban migrant rafters, who leave behind their rustic vessels known as chugs that contain batteries, fuel, oil, polystyrene foam, plastic and other hazardous materials. Monroe County removes about 80 derelict vessels each year from sanctuary waters, but this is the county’s first removal project in the Marquesas Keys. “Monroe County is pleased the removal work is about to start,” said Rich Jones, senior administrator of the marine resources office. “This project has required extensive planning and coordination with multiple state and federal agencies, and is logistically complicated due to the remote location and specialized boats and equipment necessary.” Daniel Clark, refuge manager for the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges complex, said the Marquesas Keys provide some of the last remaining habitat in the Lower Keys for several threatened and endangered species, including the piping plover, green and hawksbill sea turtles, and

the Miami blue butterfly. “Removal of these vessels and marine debris is critical for the continued conservation of these rare animals and their habitats,” Clark said. Vessel removal also will eliminate human health threats and safety hazards to people who try to climb on them or access them. This project involves Monroe County, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service that oversees the refuge, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Division of Law Enforcement, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Coastal Office and the U.S. Coast Guard. Monroe County and the Sanctuary have hired local-based Coffin Marine Services to remove the vessels, which range in size from 18 to 25 feet, and are spread across six islands. Some of the chugs are submerged in the nearshore waters and others are strewn along sandy beaches and mangroves. Coffin Marine Services will use a 60-foot barge with a boom crane and other resources to remove the boats. To minimize environmental impacts from the project, the boats will be removed from sensitive habits before hazardous material is recovered. The project is being paid for with Monroe County Boating Improvement Funds, which are generated from recreational vessel registration fees, and Sanctuary Damage Assessment and Restoration Revolving Funds, which are recovered from incidents involving injuries to Sanctuary resources. — Contributed

THE ARTS

KEY WEST WEEKLY / MARCH 17, 2017

HIDDEN TREASURES TAKE THE STOCK ISLAND STUDIO TOUR

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

V

isiting an artist’s studio is like stepping into a closet of the imagination. Everything from paint to wood to glass is on display waiting for the moment of being assembled and re-invented. The Stock Island Studio Tours on Saturday, March 25, hosted by the Studios of Key West, is that rare chance to visit some of the wellknown artists of Key West and see the “before and after” of some of the most creative people in Key West. There will be seven stops on the tour, featuring artists Cindy Wynn, Jimmy Wray, Perry Arnold, Derek Arnold, Craig Berube Gray, Steven King, Pamela Kostmayer, Rudi Repenning, A.D. Tinkham, Simone Lasswell and Pam Bluth of Renegade Clay, the craftsmen of Coast Projects, and others. With open doors, the artists have stories to tell and treasure troves of art. Longtime artists Jimmy and Karen Wray have worked on Stock Island 30 plus years and welcome visitors to their Key West Woodworks shop at Safe Harbour Marina. Learn about Jimmy Wray’s sculpture pedestals made from reclaimed native trees of Key West. Beautifully carved with a 33-horsepower portable bandsaw, the pedestals weigh up to 300 pounds and give new life to demolished trees in Key West. “Jimmy has the foresight and design skills to create something no one else can see,” said wife and fellow woodcarver Karen Wray. Karen Wray has also created a space no one else could imagine upstairs at The Lost Supper Club. She has put together a unique gallery hidden above the fray of the harbor. Filled with artists such as Elizabeth Devries, Tobias McGregor, Dalva Duerte, Craig Sasser, Gretchen Mills and more, the gallery itself is a one-of-a-kind space furnished with treasures of Stock Island. Wray’s own pieces titled “Balancing Acts” are on display as interactive table sculptures. She describes them as “giving people the potential to be an architect, designer, and engineer and create their own random moments.”

A

weeklong celebration of the “cousin” of the national parks continues through Saturday with several events on Big Pine Key. Outdoor Fest – filled with familyfriendly, mostly free outdoor adventures and hands-on activities – runs through Saturday, March 18. It’s a celebration of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex and the Friends group FAVOR. “The National Wildlife Refuge System is part of America’s network of amazing public lands, with refuges being the ‘cousin’ of America’s National Parks,” said ranger and outreach coordinator Kristie Killam. “We’re really fortunate to have these areas for people to visit and enjoy nature.” The Outdoor Fest was created to remind people of the natural resources available in the Keys and encourage them to get outside, while promoting an understanding and appreciation of the refuges – home to some of the world’s most endangered habitats, plants, and wildlife species, including the endangered Key deer. The Keys are home to four national wildlife refuges – National Key Deer, Crocodile Lake, Great White Heron, and Key West National Wildlife Refuges. This year’s fest kicked off in Key Largo at Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This weekend, events ranging from star-gazing to kayak tours and more are scheduled on Big Pine Key. For more information about the refuges, FAVOR, and the event, visit www.favorfloridakeys.org/outdoorfest or contact Kristie Killam at 305.304.9625 or email Nancy or Jan at flkeysoutdoorfest@gmail.com. -Contributed
