Habitat for Humanity hosts community meeting Habitat for Humanity invites all interested parties to a community meeting at the Big Coppitt Fire Station on Saturday, March 18 at 2 p.m. The meeting will serve to introduce the proposed project to build 10 new homes with affordable deed restrictions on the vacant site on Big Coppitt. Staff members will be available to answer questions about the project and will provide a short presentation about the homeownership program and the application process. Children and teen poetry contest Monroe county students are encouraged to submit poetry entries to the Robert Frost Poetry Contest for Children and Teens by Friday, April 14.

Children aged 6-12 and teens aged 13-18 are encouraged to email or drop their poems to The Studios of Key West, poetry@tskw.org. Students should include their name, parent or guardian’s name, phone number and age with submissions. Poetry can be any length, based on any subject, and be rhymed or unrhymed. Teachers may also submit the work of their students. Top prize for each age group is a $75 cash award, second prize is a $50. Honorable mentions will also be given. Winners will be recognized with certificates at a reception and public reading in May.

n March 1, 2017 the Florida Keys Lionfish crisis swung in favor of the humans at 8:49 a.m. when Ian Michael Mirabella was born at the Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West.

The future world-record holding spear fisherman and underwater adventurer is the son of John Mirabella and Amanda Mae Couturier of Marathon. His dad owns Castaway Waterfront Restaurant where his mom works as head bartender.

His maternal grandparents, Mike and Debra Couturier, live in Cedar Springs, Michigan while paternal grandmother Cynthia Mirabella resides in Cocoa, Florida. His paternal grandfather Michael Roger Mirabella is deceased.

Young Mirabella was born weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces and measured 19.75” – or roughly the size of a legal mutton snapper.

his time of year, the whole town of Marathon celebrates its commercial fishermen in conjunction with the Original Marathon Seafood Festival, set for Saturday and Sunday, March 11-12. Art Stephens is one of them.

(In his own words, he’s been “killing fish” for more than 30 years.)

beer tent; for years it’s been his responsibility to make sure the tent is fully staffed for the demanding job of quenching the thirst of festival-goers. The tips at the beer tent support a really good cause that’s close to his heart — kids’ athletics.

But it’s impossible to overlook Art Stephens. Just look for the guy in the 10-gallon white hat with a very faithful Snoop by his side.

20 Questions with Art Stephens 1. Full name: Art Stephens.

2. Where were you raised? In a little place called Yorktown in southeast Virginia.

3. Did you ever think you would grow up to be a commercial fisherman? No. I didn’t even consider that you could make a living being on the water because I was raised during a time that if you didn’t get a business degree you were considered a failure. But I loved being on the water as a kid — catching blue crabs, picking oysters and footin’ clams.

4. How did you get to the Keys? I arrived in Marathon in 1977 on a 36-foot navy launch with a four-cylinder Perkins. (That means it didn’t go fast.) I was delivering the boat for some friends of mine and they couldn’t pay me right away. So I decided to get some work so I could buy the ticket back. I got a job cutting bait for crab traps. And the rest is history.

5. And then what happened? Well, by the time I was 24 years old, I paid taxes on 73k from what I earned captaining my own commercial fishing boat. I decided to go home that year for Christmas, and arrived in my brand new Coupe de Ville. My parents didn’t believe it was mine!

6. What was your very first job? My first job was as a probation officer running a boot camp in Colorado — basically the step between jail and a foster home. It was a rewarding job and I had some success stories.

7. What other jobs have you had? Well, I’ve also been a charter boat captain, done excavation work, and worked in a cabinet shop. Liz and I are building a house right now, and I am doing all the interior work.

8. In Havana, during the Mariel Boat Lift, what did you feed the crew of the other boats impounded in the harbor? I had thousands of pounds of shrimp aboard.

Every night I would bring out 200 pounds and dole it out.

9. What will you do when you retire? If I live long enough, I’m going to move to my property in Tennessee. It took me 20 years to realize that growing up on a farm is the best upbringing you could have. I want that experience for my grandkids.

10. What did your involvement look like, being a single dad of two daughters and one son? It involved a lot of coaching — baseball and volleyball. My kids are in their 20s and 30s now, but I just quit umping two years ago.

11. What’s the beer tent’s claim to fame? We have the concession with the highest percentage of profit.

12. What are the health requirements to work in the beer tent? Must be able to run 500 8-yard sprints an hour.

13. What’s your favorite scripture? “Be still and know that I am God.” 14. What’s your life motto? “Some will, some won’t, some do, some don’t, I might.”

15. What’s your favorite TV show? “College Game Day.” 16. What’s your favorite movie? “Jeremiah Johnson,” the Western starring Robert Redford.

17. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Aaron Rodgers’ (Green Bay Packers) passing arm.

18. Favorite professional sports team?

The Dolphins and Canes.

19. What’s the last vacation you took? I went to Panama with a friend. We spent a couple of days surfing at Boca del Torres.

20. What do you love best about Marathon? It’s such a giving town. I regularly have one local that drops a $100 check in the tip jar at the Marathon Seafood Festival. He doesn’t drink, but wants to support our community.

he Marathon Seafood Festival is upon us!

The fun runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 12. The event takes place at the Marathon Community Park at MM 49, oceanside.

As usual, the entire town has put aside normal doings to pitch in and pull this off.

“This truly is a community effort, and rightfully so as the Marathon Seafood Festival benefits our community,” said Daniel Samess of the Marathon Chamber of Commerce. “It draws visitors to our islands, the scholarships benefit kids, and grants and donations help our local non-profits, youth sports, and other Marathon Chamber programs that benefit our valued 575-plus members each year.”

The festival is the joint work of the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce (logistics) and the Organized Fishermen of Florida (catching and cooking). The festival’s main attraction is the food — a line of booths offers everything from a seafood dinner to fish dip to conch fritters plus desserts and more. Looking for a lost friend?

The Rotary Club is selling raffle tickets — $5 each or 5 for $20 — for the “basket of cheer.” (It’s actually a really nice Yeti cooler that’s filled to the brim with cocktail ingredients.)

“It’s important for Rotary to have a booth,” said Patrick Stevens, president of the local Rotary Club. “Not only can we spread the word about the club’s good work, the raffle tickets help pay for student scholarships.”

DEBATE OVER DOLLARS CITIES: ALLOCATION IS UNFAIR

PROMOTION KEEPS KEYS STRONG

A

t our last City Council meeting, we unanimously joined other Keys municipalities — as well as Ocean Reef, Last Stand, the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce, and others — to request fair treatment over distribution of bed tax (tourist tax) dollars. Currently, 25 percent of one penny of that tax is budgeted for “bricks and mortar” — tourism-related capital improvement projects for local governments and non-profit attractions like the Wild Bird Center and Pigeon Key. The county can reimburse itself 100 percent of capital costs, but cities and non-profits are only entitled to 50-percent reimbursement.

Decisions about funding are made by the local District Advisory Committees (DACs), passed to the Tourist Development Council (TDC), and ratified by the Monroe County Commission.

A resolution on this issue was passed unanimously by Islamorada, Layton, Marathon, Key Colony Beach and Key West. Seeing as 83 percent of bed tax dollars are generated from Keys municipalities, it seems only right to make municipal governments equal beneficiaries. It would make things easier for non-profits and ensure up to 75 percent reimbursement. And, it asked that bricks and mortar funding not get rolled back into advertising. This would ensure that projects coming down the line have funding. The local DACs would still make all funding recommendations.

When the TDC heard the issue at its meeting this past week, they basically told the cities to drop dead. Key West Mayor (and TDC member) Craig Cates spoke eloquently in defense of the resolution. Sadly, he was the only one. A litany of lodging industry representatives (and the Key West Chamber of Commerce) spoke about a tourist economy in shambles.

In fiscal 2012, the county collected just over $25 million in the one cent added to bed taxes. Four years later, that number was nearly $36.5 million. That’s hardly an industry in decline.

But what was more shocking was the condescension and belittling of elected officials by appointed advisory industry representatives.

Any change was anathema to their push for more advertising dollars.

Those are taxpayer dollars, and they come under the sole authority of elected officials (in this case, the Monroe County Commission).

The TDC has done an excellent job marketing the Keys. I served three years on our local DAC, and I completely understand the need for advertising and marketing. But I also realize the need to provide a good experience for visitors, and that’s where bricks and mortar dollars for local governments and non-profits come in.

This Wednesday, the Monroe County Commission can remind the TDC that tourist tax dollars are still taxpayer dollars, and that the authority of their distribution rests solely with the County Commission. Call your commissioners and ask them to stand united with their elected municipal representatives and support this unanimously approved resolution. ­— John Bartus is a Marathon City Councilman and former president of the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce.

s chair of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council (TDC), it is appropriate to respond to John Bartus’ column. I welcome the opportunity to provide information regarding the council’s recent decision to not vote in favor of a Marathon City Council resolution requesting 100 percent reimbursement for bricks and mortar projects for Monroe County’s incorporated areas and nonprofit organizations.

In his column, Mr. Bartus unfairly accused TDC board members, saying “they basically told the cities to drop dead.” He also claimed that board members “thumb(ed their) nose(s) at elected municipal officials.”

Any person who attended the meeting knows these accusations and claims are false. The meeting was civil and respectful for those representing both sides of the issue. The recording of the meeting supports that fact.

It was disheartening to read a column with such a fractious tone that painted the TDC board members as being disrespectful to elected officials.

The resolution presented to the board was drawn up before any conversations with TDC members were held. Several long meetings with TDC leadership took place after the resolution had been drafted.

Unfortunately, none of the suggestions given to our elected officals were reflected in the resolution presented to us.

The TDC voted against the resolution because: The tourism industry strongly believes the primary purpose of bed tax revenues (paid for by visitors and not Keys residents) is to advertise and promote the destination and keep the Keys economy strong.

Less advertising and event funding will affect visitation to the Keys, which will negatively impact local economies and reduce salesrelated taxes for local governments.

The District Advisory Committees (DACs) are made up of representatives of each local community, their businesses and the publicat-large. DAC members are capable of deciding where tax revenues earned in their district should be spent. It is imperative for DACs to develop their own budgets.

The current capital funding policy of matching 50 percent for municipalities and non-profit organizations is suitable because applicants should invest their own financial resources as well. This procedure has been proven for over 20 years.

The decision by TDC was supported by the Florida Keys Lodging Association, four of five Keys chambers of commerce and all DAC chairpersons at the meeting.

It’s important to remember that tourist development tax dollars are paid for by visitors when they stay in a Keys lodging facility. This can be a hotel, motel, guesthouse, campground or vacation rental.

Monroe ad-valorem, or property, taxes are not allocated to TDC. Tourist tax revenues are collected by the Monroe County Tax Collector and placed in a Tourist Development Trust Fund that is managed by TDC, as per state statute. All TDC recommendations are approved by the Monroe County Commission.

TDC’s meetings are open to the public and meeting schedules are on Monroe County’s website. Keys residents are encouraged to attend.

Spicy Turkey Sausage and Kale Chili INGREDIENTS: 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 lb. ground spicy turkey sausage 1 large onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 tbsp. chili powder 1 tsp. dried oregano 1 tsp. cayenne 2 tbsp. tomato paste 1 15-oz. can diced tomatoes 1 15-oz. cannellini beans, rinsed 3 c. low-sodium chicken broth 1 large bunch kale, torn into pieces

DIRECTIONS In a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, heat oil. Add turkey sausage and cook until golden and cooked through, about 6 minutes. Add onion, garlic, red pepper, chili powder, cayenne, and oregano and cook until tender, 6 to 7 minutes. Add tomato paste and stir, 1 minute. Add diced tomatoes, white beans, and chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and add kale.

More than 500 signed up to participate in the annual Sombrero Beach Run to benefit Keys Area Interdenominational Resources (KAIR). It was perfect, albeit windy, weather for the five-in-one race day. Runners competed in the 10k and 5k, and some undertook the combined 15k challenge. There were plenty of walkers, and kids got a chance to show their stuff during the 1-mile fun run. SMALL RUN WITH LITTLE DEER 5K is part of Outdoor Fest

The third annual “Run with Deer” 5K run/walk is set for Saturday, March 18, at 8 a.m., starting and ending at Big Pine Community Park on Sands Road and wandering through rural roads within the boundaries of the National Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine Key. Co-sponsored by the Southernmost Runners Club and FAVOR Florida Keys (Friends And Volunteers of Refuges), the race is part of the Florida Keys Wildlife Refuges’ Outdoor Fest, a weeklong celebration of the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuge system that encourages people to get outside in a wildlife-friendly manner.

“It’s a fun route and a great way for people to get out in nature, get a little exercise, and contribute to the National Wildlife Refuges,” said Nancy Chatelaine, FAVOR Volunteer/Race Coordinator.

The Fest, which spans the four national wildlife refuges in Florida, features family-friendly, mostly free outdoor adventures and hands-on activities is set for Saturday, March 11 through Saturday, March 18, and includes the Saturday “Run with Deer” 5K that starts at 8am, followed by an awards ceremony at the Park and a familyfriendly Outdoor & Wildlife Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will feature exhibitors from local non-profit and environmental organizations, local artists, music, lots of kids’ activities including big bubbles, face-painting, T-shirt making, a giant memory game, and more.

Proceeds from the race benefit FAVOR Florida Keys and will be used to help support purchase of exhibits for the new refuge ranger center, habitat restoration, education and outreach, and many other projects in the four Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges that help protect our endangered wildlife.

The weeklong Outdoor Fest in the four Keys wildlife refuges offers plenty of ways to get children outside.

The fest, which runs from Saturday, March 11, through Saturday, March 18, includes expert-guided birding, nature walks, and backcountry boat trips; evening wildlife programs; nature sketching, nature photography workshops and a photo contest; kayak excursions, a natural history bike ride, and the 3nd Annual Run/Walk with Deer 5K on Big Pine Key; and two family-fun wildlife fairs.

“Nature can bring out the explorer in any kid,” said Crocodile Lake Refuge Ranger Jeremy Dixon, who has three children, ages 4, 7 and 10. “Any bug, tree snail, strange leaf, or even designs on tree bark opens up a wonderful world of discovery.”

The week-long outdoor extravaganza, presented by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex and their Friends group FAVOR (Friends And Volunteers Of Refuges), offers an up-close take on National Key Deer, Crocodile Lake, Great White Heron, and Key West National Wildlife Refuges.

Kids ages 4-12 and their caregivers will enjoy a two-hour scavenger hunt for iconic Key Largo wildlife on Monday, March 13 from 2 to 4 p.m., and a hands-on activity to learn about ecosystems and “The Food Web” on Tuesday March 14 from 2 to 4 p.m., both starting at Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Headquarters. On Thursday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., kids and their families can discover the Japanese art of wildlife origami, making cranes and other wildlife, and later that same day from 1 to 2:30 p.m., participate in a kids’ photography workshop.

he Keys may be 4,282 miles from Dublin, but come March 17 patrons at every drinking establishment from Key West to Key Largo will be clad in green and raising toasts to friendships, sunsets, fishing, puppies, green food coloring and whatever else comes to mind.

Jameson will fill glasses and drinking songs will float across warm breezes.

Many restaurants and dinner cruises will serve up Irish fare, and a few will go a bit further.

Key Largo maintains two Irish traditions. March 11 brings the Upper Keys Irish Festival, with a parade, singing contest, live music, Irish dancing and plenty of corned beef, hosted at the Caribbean Club (MM 104, caribbeanclubkl.com). Then on March 17 proper, Snappers Oceanfront Restaurant & Bar continues the party with a parade and celebration (MM 94.5, snapperskeylargo.com).

The biggest party in Marathon lands in Key Colony Beach, with its annual parade. Parade assembly begins at 4:30 p.m., with vehicles gathering at the 15th Street Circle and walkers meeting at Sunset Park. At 5 p.m., vehicles will start the parade, going to 14th Street toward Sunset Park, where walkers will join in. The route then follows Ocean Drive all the way to its end at First Street. The parade is followed by, you guessed it, corned beef. Sparky’s Landing serves that up, but the party overflows from there into all of the nearby bars as well, including Key Colony Inn, turning the evening into one, big festive block party (sparkyslanding.com).

Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge cuts straight to the libations with its annual St. Patrick’s Day dance and beer drinking contest. The rules: wear green, form teams of six, try to win (MM 33, bpkfl.com). Nearby Boondocks Grill goes Irish with food, music and mini golf (MM 27.5, boondocksus.com).

The biggest Keys’ Paddy’s Day party, however, starts at MM 0. Every

year Key West turns from “one human family” into one big Irish one. Not that anyone in Key West requires a holiday to drink and be merry, but this day comes as a fun excuse to bust out goofy hats, green Mardi Gras beads, green tutus, green … whatever the heart desires.

This year marks the 39th annual St. Patrick’s Day Bar Stroll, which is actually on Saturday, March 18. Walk from the ocean to the gulf, and stop at most of the bars in between. Local Rick Dostal started the beloved Key West charity event in 1979 and diligently keeps it alive today. It was once a “run” between bars, but since running and chugging often ended with the beer back out on the sidewalk, it eventually became a stroll. A T-shirt and beer ticket is $30, and only an additional $10 for magic Irish boxer shorts. Don’t know what those are? Investigate at stpatricksdaybarstroll.com.

For those who prefer a lessplanned day, all that’s in order is a walk through Old Town. Merriment spills out of every bar along Duval, along with plenty of live music, dancing jigs and green drinks. There are three Irish pubs in town: McConnell’s Pub & Grill (900 Duval), Shanna Key (1900 Flagler Ave.) and the perpetually celebratory Irish Kevin’s Bar (211 Duval), all of which up the traditional Irish food menu for the day. And don’t forget the sunset at Mallory Square — what better way to start off a lucky St. Patrick’s Day evening than by watching the elusive green flash at sunset.

itting in her seventh grade class years ago at Horace O’Bryant School in Key West, Sebrina Alfonso dreamed of conducting a symphony. Now, as she stands in front of the many musicians who play to the movements of her arms, she is the maestra conducting her own South Florida Symphony. And, it’s not just for lovers of the grandeur, but also as an educational experience for 3,500 elementary and middle-school students from Key Largo to Key West.

Students received a firsthand symphony experience under the direction of Alfonso, with narration by Donna Wissinger, this past week. Elementary and middle-school students were given in-classroom instruction and guidance, then brought to school district auditoriums to hear the sounds at work. Younger students witnessed “Peter and the Wolf” come alive, while seventh-graders saw the magic of the reef with a commissioned piece, “Preserving Our Coral Reef.”

“I really enjoyed it,” said fourthgrader Naima, 10. “It was so relaxing; as soon as they started playing, all of my tension just went away.”

Naima and her classmates from Sugarloaf School learned about the instruments and the story of “Peter and the Wolf” a few months ago. “It was great to experience the story without the instruments to begin with, then to see it in action.”

Elizabeth Young, executive director of Florida Keys Council of the Arts, said the intimidation of attending a symphony is absent when students and teachers experience it in this manner.

“The in-classroom learning explains all of the instrument families and how they work together, and then they get to see and feel how the orchestra is a team effort,” she said.

The arts council, Monroe County School District, South Florida Symphony and the teaching artists help bring the program to the classrooms, and the students to the concerts.

The seventh-graders integrated their experience with their science curriculums. The music for “Preserving Our Coral Reef” was inspired by Dr. David Vaughn, of Summerland Key’s MOTE Marine Laboratory.

“The main purpose of the program is to educate middle-school students about the dynamic ecosystem that is off their shores and to inspire them,” said Wissinger in her grant application for the school program.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you?

I am on the varsity tennis team; tennis is my favorite sport and I enjoy playing.

I am also in the Mu Alpha Theta club — it satisfies my nerdiness and love of math. I am also on the Academic Challenge Team and in Honor Society — it’s important to try hard. I’m also a part of the drama club and Thespian Society. I recently received the Sunshine Scholar award, based on merit in the STEM fields, and will represent Monroe County at the state level.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why?

My biggest inspiration would be Ms. Cox. She is a good friend to students and advocates for our rights. She is also a strong, supportive teacher.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why?

AP calculus with Mrs. Joshua is the class most similar to those I will be taking in college.

Snapchat. No filter — we live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth and it’s great just the way it is.

The biggest challenge is getting a large enough, and skilled enough, workforce to fulfill the needs of the Keys.

What are your plans after high school?

I hope to go to college to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

he annual stone crab dinner is the brainchild of the Marathon Alumni Athletic Club and is hosted by Keys Fisheries in Marathon. Selling tickets is a full-press, community wide affair. In addition to dinner tickets, the organizers also sell a limited number of $100 raffle tickets for prizes of $10,000, $500 and $100.

Proceeds from both are split between the general athletic fund (for travel, uniforms and equipment expenses) and the needs of the team whose coach has sold the most tickets.

On Sunday, hundreds of locals came to eat waterside, or take the bounty home.

artender Yeni Matie has been slinging drinks at The Island Fish Co. for six years. But she is no novice to the island ways, since she started working there right after her 2006 graduation from Marathon High School.

“It’s a family environment and family owned business,” she said. “I work with all of my best friends.”

She said the drink of choice at The Island is the P.I.A. – short for Pain in the A**. “It used to be more of a P.I.A. to make,” she said. The drink is a mixture of pina colada and rumrunner and topped with a floater.

“It’s an original recipe,” she said.

“None of it is made out of a mix.”

She said her favorite thing to recommend is the Baja fish tacos. “The tacos complement the drink well,” she said. They are made with flash fried mahi, cilantro, cabbage, tomatoes and jalapenos, topped with a Baja taco sauce served with rice and beans.

“My favorites are ever-changing since I have worked here for so long,” she said. “I’ve tried everything 100 times.”

When she isn’t bartending, she is hanging out with her family and playing with her dogs, Loki and Lola. She also likes kayaking with her husband Ronnie. “You can’t beat that it’s summer year-round here,” she said.

S

ynchronized swimmers need to be flexible, strong, coordinated, and completely comfortable in the water. The complexity of the sport requires constant practice and dedication. The Upper Keys’ Synchro Sirens embody every bit of that dedication – only smaller.

Led by former Ohio State University’s national collegiate champion and Keys native Coach Isla Turner, the Sirens are hard at work mastering the skills they’ll need to be champions.

In three years, the club has grown in membership from four to 15, with both competitive and recreational teams.

Now in her third year of synchronized swimming, young Siren Ava is enjoying herself as much as ever.

“I did the camp and thought it was really fun, so I joined the club and kept doing it. My favorite part are the drills the group does,” said Ava. The tiniest Siren, Alice, was given the duty of being on top of the lifts, which she said are always fun. Being on top of the formation has allowed her to break out of her shell. So the team gave her the “Turtle” award.

Turner often challenges her Sirens’

ability levels. Using a combination of weight belts, ankle weights, and inflatable jugs to help master stabilizing upside-down, Turner uses advanced training techniques to get the most out of her swimmers.

Turner relies on technology as training aids too. Along with an underwater microphone, Turner records the girls with a GoPro and then reviews the routine on her iPad with the group, tweaking each swimmer to expedite muscle memory.

“In the first few years of learning the sport, it takes a lot of practice, especially in the beginning,” said Turner.

“That’s why our swimmers are required to practice 3 to 4 days a week.”

That’s not all. Turner may assign extra training, homework and set goals for the girls outside of practice to help them move along faster. The sirens have welcomed the challenge.

Siren Skye says her favorite part about being part of the team is “learning routines, and I also like the costumes.”

Another Siren, Liza, said she enjoys being part of a team and making new friends the most. Liza was recognized by the team for her willingness to help other swimmers, aptly being awarded the “Friendly Frog” award.

In the first few years of the sport,

training is dedicated to developing the swimmer’s orientation in the water, learning drills in and out of the water, mastering sculling skills, and conditioning. Sculling is the term used for horizontal movements by the arms used to keep a swimmer’s head above the surface.

“The hardest thing they’ll learn at the beginning are the different types of sculling skills that they’ll need when they perform different spins,” said Turner. “At any competition, they have to perform 4 figures and compete individually while their forms are observed by a panel of judges. Their forms are 35 percent of the placement score; the other 65 percent is their routine.”

At competition, the swimmers are not allowed to use caps or goggles.

That means swimmers have to get used to having water in their eyes. To keep their hair contained, the team uses Knox gelatin to solidify their locks into a stiff bun. Synchronized swimmers refer to it as “knoxing.”

“It feels like you have a rock on your head,” said the oldest Siren, Maleah. “You have to use hot water and conditioner to get it out, but it takes a couple days.”
