MARATHON WEEKLY / MARCH 03, 2017 SARA MATTHIS

The Monroe County School Board held its first public hearing on changing start times for local high schools on Feb. 28 in Marathon. This is on the heels of sending out a survey to every parent of students enrolled in the school district. Although the results of the survey have not been revealed and no decisions have been made, the district appears to be exploring later start times for high schools. Even minor changes to the schedule, however, have the chance of throwing off a family’s schedule. So the Weekly asked …

Do you think school should start later? “I have four children to wake up, feed, get dressed and three to get ready for the bus,” said Catherine Dunn, mother of elementary-age children. “It is a challenge to be punctual. I would be fine with starting later, but not earlier.”

Galina Nikiforova, mother of a middle schooler, prefers a later start. “Teenagers are biologically incapable of getting to sleep early; I think they naturally fall asleep at about 11 p.m. But I also understand that it might not be convenient for some families.”

Capt. Don Hiller, father of a seventh grader, would rather leave things alone. “When he was in grade school it was always a rush to do sports and homework. We wouldn’t finish until about 9 p.m.”

“I think it needs to stay the same,” said Leslie Ryder, mother of two at Marathon Middle High School. “They also need time to devote to after-school activities and jobs.”

“At some point of the year, the kids are waiting at the bus stop in the dark,” said Pete Chapman, father of young children. “Certainly, we shouldn’t start any earlier.”

Council to replace code board with special magistrate SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

B

y a 3-2 vote on Tuesday, the Marathon City Council dictated exactly how the ceremonial mayor is chosen. The new ordinance replaces the informal vote that took place as soon as the newly elected council was seated. Councilman Steve Cook initiated the change. He said he saw the process as “broken.” “This is almost a kindergarten-simple procedure. We know who is going to be next,” Cook said, adding that it would remove any hint of Sunshine Law violation, where council members speak about the vote in private before the vote. The new rule uses seniority to determine the next mayor. The person who has the most years on council, without having served as mayor, is first in line. The person with the secondmost seniority would be second in line, and so on. In the event that two council people have identical seniority (were elected at the same time), the person elected with more votes will have seniority. John Bartus and Mark Senmartin, who both have previously served as mayor, voted against the ordinance. “I think we are creating way too much procedure for what is technically a ceremonial position,” said Bartus. “The [new ordinance] is like giving everyone a trophy at Little League,” said Senmartin. Cook disagreed. “The people have elected someone, generally, that can sit in the center seat,” he said, motioning to where Mayor Dan Zieg sits on the dais. “And if someone has sat there, they can help the next person through.” Under the new rule, which takes effect immediately, the next mayor will

be Vice Mayor Michelle Coldiron. There was a motion to approve, and a second. At that point, Senmartin said he had more to add, but Zieg stopped him. “We have exhausted the discussion,” he said. ••• City Attorney David Migut presented his findings on creating a special magistrate position to replace the current code board. He said special magistrates are most often attorneys, and as such, would remove the necessity of having an extra lawyer. “The city attorney can’t represent the council and the code board,” Migut said. Monroe County, Key West and Islamorada all use special magistrates. The cost runs from $150 to $200 per hour. On the mainland, the average cost is $136. Both Migut and City Manager Chuck Lindsey cautioned the council that a special magistrate is not cheaper than a code board. The entire council complimented Code Directory Stacy Charlton on the department’s performance and focus on compliance, rather than penalty; 75 percent of code enforcement violations are resolved before the board must weigh in. Most of the comment concerned the pros (impartiality) and cons (lack of local understanding) of a code board versus a special magistrate. “A magistrate keeps us honest. If the city’s case isn’t strong enough to make it past the magistrate, then we learn what we need to do to make it better,” Lindsey said. “And the magistrate will take recommendations from the city on how to proceed. We can also ask the magistrate to show leniency if there’s room for that. It makes enforcement easier and removes bias.” Currently, the code board consists of local volunteers: James Leonard, Steven Britske, Ryan Frederick, David

In other news: • The city has taken ownership of a trailer on a canal on 81st Street. The owners turned over the deed in lieu of accrued code violation fines. Options include selling the property and putting the funds in the affordable housing trust fund, trading it for non waterfront lots and possibly more building rights, or keep it and use it to “sweeten the pot” for developers who seek to build affordable housing. The council delayed action, awaiting further developments. • Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay gave the council a check for $172,000. The funds are savings — or unspent funds — from the amount the sheriff’s office receives to police Marathon • The council agreed to have a workshop to discuss planning and regulations for Marathon’s larger homes. Parking and wastewater fees for big houses — more than four bedrooms and bathrooms — were mentioned.

Week 4 The teams with the highest percentage of weight loss from Feb. 6-13 are listed below.

Going forward, the Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed in the paper every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders. Teams marked with an asterisk (*) had at least one member miss the previous weigh-in. Although we still calculated the team’s percentage of weight loss, it was weight-loss achieved over two weeks.

Cucumber and Hummus I have a new, favorite snack — cucumber and hummus. I buy the Sabra brand of “supremely spicy” hummus at Publix. It’s the work of seconds to peel the cuke and slice it up. Four things I love: • This type of snack keeps well in the refrigerator at work — it doesn’t go bad right away. • The spicy element, I’m told, kicks up my metabolism. • Cucumbers do a world of good for the body. Whether you put them on your eyes to reduce swelling, or eat them, the chemical makeup is beneficial. Because it contains so much

water, it’s said to sweep the toxins out of the body. • The snack adds up to 98 calories and contains 4g of fiber, 5g protein and 4g of fat. Plus, nobody can be hungry after eating half of a cucumber. Do you have a healthy snack to share? Email sara@keysweekly.com. — Sara Matthis

MIDDLE KEYS

MARATHON WEEKLY / MARCH 03, 2017

Talk focuses on Duck Key bridges

SARA MATTHIS sara@keysweekly.com

I

t’s no secret that the four little bridges on Duck Key are in need of repair. Built in 1955, they may qualify for the National Register of Historic Places. On Thursday, at 5:30 p.m., the residents of Duck Key were to meet with Monroe County officials to discuss repair and/or replacement. “We want the bridges to be safe. We want them to be fixed. But the historical value of those arches is also important,” said Fritz Anderson, a Duck Key resident, before the meeting. No details about the public forum were available at presstime. The county recently released an engineering report authored by Kisinger Campo & Associates, to augment another report from 2014. The report highlights the bridges’ design deficiencies, familiar to anybody who has ever driven across them. They are crumbling above and below the waterline. They are narrow. They are steep, making it difficult to see what’s coming. There’s no shoulder and while the cement balustrades are very pretty, they are not crash-tested. Most importantly, there’s no room for pedestrians – although that doesn’t stop residents and visitors from crossing them on foot regularly. The new report outlines multiple “alternatives,” ranging from a straight refurbishment to refurbishment plus adding a pedestrian bridge to complete replacement. The last option calls for the 25-foot-wide bridge to be widened to 33 or 42 feet, depending on whether there would be one sidewalk or two, and for the

ornamental balustrade to be replaced with a more industrial option. The meeting on Thursday was to begin gathering public opinion. Judith Clark, Monroe County’s director of engineering, said the county plans to assess the input from the public, historic preservation officials and the Coast Guard. (The Coast Guard, actually, will have the final say as the bridges cross canals with heavy boat traffic.) “From an engineering perspective, (just refurbishing the bridge) is my least preferred option because it does not address the safety issue created by the narrow width and no sidewalk,” Clark said. If the process goes smoothly — agreement from all the parties, and funds are forthcoming for design and engineering — two of the bridges could be under construction in early 2018 and take a year to complete. Some Duck Key residents, though, are expressing concern over changes to the aesthetics of the bridges, reportedly designed after those in Venice at the time they were constructed in 1955. The distinctive balustrades and decorative pineapples, especially, are near and dear to the hearts of homeowners. At least one alternative calls for “Texas Railing” —stainless steel cable barriers strung horizontally between posts. “There’s a very thin line between refurbishments and replacement. If you do too much, then you have to make more changes to meet all of the current guidelines,” Anderson said. “I want to remind officials that this is a residential community that is almost built out. We don’t want the bridges over-engineered, but we want to feel safe.”

as the stage at Marathon Community Theatre ever seen something so delightfully racy? Maybe, but this is hot, hot, hot — the Kit Kat Klub girls and guys, the acting, the music. For a small town and a small theater, Marathon has a lot of talent on display. Opening Thursday, March 9, and running through April 8, the Marathon Community Theatre brings out some on the island’s top veteran performers and introduces the community to some new names.

It’s 1929 in Berlin. The Nazi regime is about to hit Germany hard, but in the meantime, the audience is engulfed in the drama of the backrooms of the Kit Kat Klub’s cabaret. The emcee, played by Devin Clarke, paints a perfect picture of the lives of singer Sally Bowles, played perfectly by Allison Sayer, and broke writer Cliff Bradshaw, played by Chance Ruder, and the surrounding characters who fall into their lives. “The cast and music are fantastic,” said Ann Hart, vice president of production who brought “The Producers” and “Chicago” to the Marathon stage. “This is my last show. I had to do this before I turned 80.” In addition to the cast, the Tony Award winning music is unforgettable, with songs like “Cabaret,” “Money,” and “Mein Herr.” A live orchestra plays the music from the balcony. This is a must-do night on the town. Just leave the kiddos at home, because “what happens between the sheets,” is impossible to misunderstand.

KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Keys Weekly 1. The emcee, played by Devin Clarke, welcomes the theater-goers to a night of fun at Berlin’s Kit Kat Klub. He enjoys including the audience, a.k.a. the Klub’s guests, in the fun. 2. The dancing and singing continues into the second act, after a 15 minute intermission. 3. Cliff Bradshaw, played by Chance Ruder, and Fraulein Schneider, played by Lesley Aaron, discuss room rent at a local boarding house. 4. The local talent doesn’t disappoint - Kit Kat Klub’s head lady, Sally Bowles, played by Allison Sayer, dazzles with her voice.

KCB celebrates 60

Key Colony Beach Day celebrates its 60th Birthday on Sunday around the grounds of city hall. Event parking is head-in along 7th Street, as well as in open lots by 8th Street and on Sadowski Causeway. The event starts with the Shriner Pancake Breakfast at 8 a.m., and features music all day, including the popular Blues Brothers and others, until 5 p.m.

K

ey Colony Beach celebrates its 60th birthday at the annual Key Colony Beach Day set for Sunday, March 5. Hosted by the Key Colony Beach Community Association, more than 70 vendors will be in attendance with wares varying from artwork to the new food court area. “Our community association fosters and encourages programs and activities in the city,” said Key Colony Beach Community Association President Gail Cortelyou, who moved to the island in 1999. “The community association gives out free-of-charge space for the event to any local non-profit who wants it, and the money we make, like from the silent auction, is reciprocated into the community.” Last year, Key Colony Beach Community Association gave out some $8,000 to local non-profits such as Take Stock in Children, KAIR, Florida Keys SPCA, Habitat for Humanity, Grace Jones, and Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition. The group also sponsors two scholarships at Marathon High School, and helped with beautification projects around the island. This year, the association also started a popular Coconut Crawl, helps with the holiday boat parade, hosts free concerts in the park open to everyone, and more. Pat Joseph-Becker, Key Colony Beach resident and founder of Key Colony Beach Realty, has fond memories of the event dating back to 1971. She and her late husband joined the Key Colony Beach Chamber of Commerce upon moving, which has since become the community association. “I have vivid memories of my children in the casting contests,” she said. “It’s

unbelievable how much the event has grown.” To this day, she says she still believes “KCB is the place to be.” The realty company will be handing out free popcorn at the event, as always. According to an article written by Key Colony Beach’s late patriarch Charles Anderson in the early ’70s, the city was literally dredged up from the ocean to become a 365-acre island. In 1957, the City of Key Colony Beach incorporated, becoming the second incorporated city in the island chain, 130 years after Key West. The 11 residents voted for incorporation unanimously, along with the island’s developer F.P. Sadowski, who was the first mayor of the city. In 1959, sales on the island topped $1.6 million. When Hurricane Donna hit in September 1960, there were only 51 structures on the island, and it took less than 90 days to clean up.

CHET DUNN KEY COLONY BEACH DAY PADADE GRAND MARSHAL

Chet Dunn was honored this year with induction into the Key Colony Beach Hall of Fame. The awardees are listed in the hallway of Key Colony Beach’s City Hall. The award began in 1994 and is given to those who have contributed to the betterment of the city. Past KCB commissioner Tucker DeGraw doted on Dunn, saying he’s helped with hurricane clean-ups over the years, was instrumental in Key Colony Beach’s Sunset Park, helps his neighbors in need, and is a big part of the Shriners Club in the Keys. Dunn will lead the 11:30 a.m. parade Sunday.

Iguana Gone is a new, natural repellant HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

W

inter might provide a tiny respite, a kind of “not as many as usual” situation, then bam! The weather warms and it’s iguana here, iguana there, iguana everywhere. They are the house quests that were never invited to the party. What to do? Developer and builder Frank Abdo’s yard in Fort Lauderdale was turning into Jurassic Park. Nothing could deter the iguanas from eating his bougainvilleas or swimming in his pool like it was the Marriott. He saw the first iguana in 2000 and thought, “How cute.” And just like the movie, it turned into disaster a decade later. Female iguanas can lay 20 to 70 eggs per clutch per year and live up to 12 years; it’s not hard to do the math. But Abdo’s wife, Jan, didn’t have the heart to kill the languorous creatures and tested her husband’s ingenuity to find another way to save his yard. “I thought there must be a ‘natural balance’ to things,” said Abdo, who realized if the bold vegans were attracted to plants, then something in turn must repel them. Two years of development, and Abdo had a working formula. Aptly named “Iguana Gone,” Abdo’s all natural deterrent hit the market at the start of 2017 – to rave reviews. “Iguana Gone is made out of 100 percent natural ingredients, no chemicals or pesticides, completely safe for pets and humans,” said Abdo. But he laughs, “It has a foul odor,” smelling similar to rotten sesame oil. When it’s applied to a white scent strip every 10 days and planted 10 to 15 feet apart in the yard, the iguanas want nothing to do with the area. It has lasting effect on the iguana’s senses. “The iguanas have a physiological trigger, when they use their tongues to test the air, they capture the scent mol-

ecules and a stress and flight reaction occurs and they leave,” said Abdo. “Not one person who has used the product has said it was ineffective.” Abdo is now getting requests from around the world. Not only does Iguana Gone repel iguanas, but curly tail lizards and frogs as well. Abdo’s website iguanagone.com provides tips and has instructional videos on correct usage (beware of sprinklers and yard crews). If infested, keep the test strip soaked and wait a week to 10 days to see results. Abdo is always available for help, because he’s been there, he understands, and like his customers, he just wants that iguana gone.

“Iguanas are an ecological and human disaster, from salmonella to destroying our yards.” —Frank Abdo, developer of Iguana Gone

newly updated study by United Way of Florida shows that almost half of the households in Monroe County don’t make enough money to afford their basic necessities. The 2017 United Way of Florida’s ALICE report shows the number of families living below the survival threshold in Monroe County has increased since the report was first issued in 2012. ALICE (families and individuals who are “Asset-Limited Income-Constrained Employed”) households are made of working people who don’t earn enough to make ends meet each month, given the high cost of living in Monroe County. ALICE individuals are employed in fields as diverse as healthcare, childcare, retail, hospitality, business, and more. United Way of the Florida Keys President and CEO Kate Bauer-Jones noted, “Here in the Keys, if you’re not ALICE, you certainly know someone who is. They are friends and neighbors, the people we see and interact with every day, working hard to survive in the most expensive county in the state.” — Contributed

his adult osprey was spotted by a kayaker in the water in the basin known as Dodge Lake behind the airport on Aviation Blvd. at the beginning of the month. The bird had its wings out trying to propel itself somewhere where it could get out of the water. Ospreys are known to have strong wings and can completely submerge and then re-emerge from underwater when hunting fish. Occasionally, however, the bird attempts to get a fish that's too big to handle and ends up either exhausted or waterlogged. Due to all the surrounding sea walls and docks, the bird finally found an “out” via a residential boat ramp of an empty, gated house that was for sale. The rescuer was smart and called the Realtor listed on the sign, who was kind enough to provide the Marathon Wild Bird Center with the gate combination so staff could rescue the bird. Overall, the bird checked out perfectly healthy yet wouldn't self-feed or fly away once thoroughly dry. Some Xrays revealed the bird had no fractures or pellet shots. A few days later, not only did the bird start to self-feed, but the bird center staff noticed that, once silent, it had suddenly become very vocal and was moving around a lot more. By Feb.

20, the bird was flying to the top of its 8-foot tall pen. After three previously failed attempts at release, the bird flew off high into the sky later that afternoon thanks to a little lift from our intern, Blake Lamb. Since the birds don’t "talk," we can only guess the reasons some of our patients come to us. Like many, this one will always be a mystery! — Kelly Grinter is the executive director of the Marathon Wild Bird Center located on the Crane Hammock Museum property. We thank our future leaders and MMHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Fin Pride.”

MARCH

SARAH KRATZERT SEVENTH GRADE What organizations and activities are you involved with at MMS and why are they important to you? I play softball. It’s important to me because I have played for almost nine years now (including before I moved to Marathon) and I enjoy it so much. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MMS and why? My inspiration is my civics teacher, Mrs. Walker. She is such a powerful person, her presence seems important. She is kind and funny and she takes the time to listen. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I feel like my civics class pushes me above and beyond and it helps me to see how the world changes and changed.

• March is the month when property taxes are due before a penalty is applied on April 1, 2017. For taxpayers who may be on the installment plan, your final tax bill for 2016 was mailed out February 28th. Local Business Tax reminders were also mailed out. • Real estate tax payments POSTMARKED after March 31st. must be in certified funds and include 3% interest on the March amount. Reminder bills mail out on February 28th totaled 7,573 real estate tax and 435 Tangible tax bills. • Section 319.22 (2) (b), Florida Statutes, requires an owner or co-owner who has transferred or sold a motor vehicle and has delivered the motor vehicle to a purchaser, to notify the department within 30 days after the sale or transfer using the form HSMV82050, Notice of Sale of Motor Vehicle, Mobile Home or Vessel, or the completed form labeled “Notice of Sale of Motor Vehicle, Mobile Home or Vessel” located on the top section (back) of the certificate of title. Notice by such owner or co-owner shall satisfy the notice requirement for limitation of liability.

Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? Snapchat. I love the dog ears filter in black and white, though I love the flower crown, too. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The challenge that I am aware of in the Keys is the fact that usable water is scarce. I mean, we’re on an island! I would like to find some way to either filter saltwater or make something to get better freshwater in the Keys. What are your plans after high school? I want to get into a good college, though I’m not quite sure which major yet. I also want to play college softball.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I would love to stay here. It will be permanent if, in the next few years, my dad doesn’t get transferred again. The Keys feel like home. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… how many dangers are really facing the Earth.

Fun at the Sombrero Run Saturday’s race is actually five in one SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

A

lthough close to 400 runners and walkers have signed up for the annual Sombrero Beach Run on Saturday, March 4, there’s still time to fit in a few more. “People can register on Friday, March 3 at Sombrero Beach from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and it’s open again on race day starting at 7 a.m.,” said race director Beth Moyes of Theme Runs of Key West. This is actually five races in one. Yes, five. The 10k starts at 8 a.m., and the 5k starts at 9:15 a.m. That means uber-athletes can combine them for a 15k challenge. Then, there’s walkers doing the 5k course. And, after it’s all said and done there will be a kids’ fun run. The 15k is a special challenge. “It really takes an endurance athlete,” said Moyes. “Because there’s a pause between the two races, runners find it hard to stop and start again.” Some find it worth the effort,

4-7PM

The race is a huge favorite with Marathon locals — but draws from other Keys communities while also attracting visitors on vacation looking for a little exercise. There’s also a huge silent auction, and a coveted single entry into the exclusive Seven Mile Bridge Run in April. It’s all for a good cause. Proceeds from the event, co-sponsored by the Southernmost Runners Club, benefit Keys Area Interdenominational Resources (KAIR), a Marathon-based

nonprofit organization that provides a food pantry and emergency services to Keys families in need. Parking is a challenge, so spectators and racers are encouraged to show up early at Sombrero Beach. Pre-registration for the 15k Challenge, where runners compete in both the 10k and 5k and are eligible for awards in both categories, is $45 on race day. For 10k and 5k participants, the race day cost is $35. There are discounts for students and military.

Luz Gonzalez Stalnaker, left, and Jill Culver cross the finish line in tutus in 2016.

though — there’s an extra prize! The Sombrero Beach Run is unique in another aspect as well. There’s a party setting on Friday night — think wine and cheese and music — and again on Saturday morning with healthy bites and … um, beer after the race.

The unstructured fun run for kids is very popular with the short set.

MARATHON WEEKLY / MARCH 03, 2017

JIM BREUER’S COMEDY ‘ABOUT REAL LIFE’ From ‘Saturday Night Live’ to Saturday night at home HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

B

reuer’s the guy that made you laugh in high-school. Whether he was cracking a joke or doing impersonations, he was the one you wanted at the party. Now things are a little different; everyone’s a little older, life’s a little more serious. But who’s to say that can’t be funny too? Performing at the Key West Theater on Friday, March 10, Breuer won’t be re-enacting his famous “Goat boy” character from “Saturday Night Live,” or the lovable stoner from the hit cult film, “Half Baked” co-starring Dave Chappelle. Breuer’s a family man now and likes to just joke about it. “The show is clean and very relatable,” said Breuer. “After 24 years of marriage, it’s like I have been a police officer in a constant domestic dispute.” Breuer is referring to living in a house with his wife and three teenage daughters in New Jersey. “I am un-Hollywood and un-pop culture. My stand-up is about real life.” Breuer rose to fame fast back in the ’90s. In his early 20s, he was already being offered gigs on TV and landed a cast role on “Saturday Night Live,” along with comedians Will Ferrell, Norm Macdonald, and Tim Meadows. He has been on every late night show including Conan, Stewart, Kimmel, and Fallon. After “Half Baked,” Breuer starred in the popular films “Zookeeper,” “Dick,” “Titan A.E.” and “Beer League.” He is a frequent guest on Howard Stern, whom he credits for keeping his stand up shows filled. Nowadays, Breuer has a recurring role on the new primetime CBS comedy “Kevin

Can Wait,” starring Kevin James. Listed as one of Comedy Central's “100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time,” Breuer says of his following, “We grew up together.” Breuer might poke a little fun at Key West; he loves to watch people, and can’t help but comment on what he sees. This is the last stop on his tour and he can’t wait to get here. But he stays away from religion and politics saying, “I am just there to make people laugh, not make a statement.” Also, Breuer may talk about his new album, “Songs From The Garage” which mixes his love of pure ’80s heavy metal and comedy. The album has a little star power from Brian Johnson (AC/ DC) with vocals on two tracks and producer/ guitarist Rob Caggiano (Anthrax, Volbeat). Reviving metal music does prove part of us may never grow up and that’s a good thing.

Jim Breuer Friday, March 10, 7 and 10 p.m. Tickets at thekeywesttheater.com

“I am not cocky, but I am gonna knock you out.” —Jim Breuer, comedian.

“I love Key West for its outstanding support of the arts.” —Annie Miners, of Waterfront Playhouse and Red Barn Theatre

FUNNY GIRL A nnie Miners has crushed the whole bucket list thing. Whether she is on stage or off, her humor, moxie and energy take center stage. Just a Minnesota girl, there was always a spark to do something special — if for no other reason than to prove to her beloved brother Jon that having an adopted baby sister was better than a baby brother. With dreams of grandeur, she headed to New York to be a record producer but ended up back home working in promotion — first in radio, then on to Prince’s night club Grand Slam. Yes, that Prince, and Miners has the stories from Paisley Park tucked away like purple gemstones, and a few good rock star pictures as well. She also helped produced national events such as OzFest and Lilith Fair. But when her mother passed, Miners did the enviable and chucked the glitz and glam for life on the turquoise waters. Miners sailed off into the sunset for a while in the Bahamas and Florida, but civilization snared her again when she auditioned at the Marathon Community Theater. She hadn’t been on stage since she was 5 years old, but the flicker was still there. Three years acting in Marathon led her to Key West on one fateful audition and an available old seaport boat slip. For the past five years, Miners has been a driving force behind Keys theater not only as marketing coordinator for Waterfront Playhouse and Red Barn Theatre, but also as an actress, director and stage manager. She works at The Studios of Key West and is a volunteer at the Tropic Cinema, and huge supporter of our fur friends at the SPCA and Pawadise Pet Rescue.

P

richard’s grandmother, Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, was an English crime novelist, short story writer and playwright. She is best known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around her fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She also wrote the world's longest-running play, a murder mystery, “The Mousetrap,” and six romances under the name Mary Westmacott. Prichard was producer of the plays “Being Poirot” (2013), “Agatha Christie's Poirot” (1989) and “Agatha Christie: A Woman of Mystery” (2007). He said his grandmother helped spark his love of the arts. "When she was young she was a singer, and if you'd offered her the choice when she was young, she would rather have been a singer than an author," he said, during one interview. "She encouraged me in my love of the arts — particularly in music and the opera." Prichard has been president of National Museum Wales and chairman of the Arts Council of Wales. He is the Welsh National Opera's honorary president. He received a medal for Philanthropy in 2012 from the Prince of Wales. Christie's stage play “The Mousetrap” holds the record for the longest initial run: it opened at the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End of London on 25 November 1952 and as of 2017 is still running after more than 25,000 performances. She is the best selling author of all times. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and a billion in 44 foreign languages. She was made a Dame in 1971 for her contribution to literature. She died in 1976. Prichard’s trip to the United States is sponsored by the English Speaking Union of Miami and the visit to the Upper Keys is sponsored by Friend of the Key Largo Cultural Center.

F

ernández will share her first-person, intimate account of growing up in Cuba. Through her insight as one of the Cuban elite, Fernandez will describe her life in Cuba, the surrounding political environment during the 1960s and ’70s, and a transparent view of her father and her relationship with him. Born in 1956 as the illegitimate daughter of Fidel Castro and Natalia Fernández, Alina Fernández grew to rebel against the political climate in Cuba. An outspoken dissident, in 1993 she disguised herself as a tourist and escaped Cuba, and was later granted political asylum in the U.S., where she remains one of her late father’s most outspoken opponents. Fernández lives in Miami where she works in radio, and has a radio show called “Simplemente Alina” (Simply Alina) on WQBA in Miami. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the fare on her variety show is light, with guests such as painters and musicians. She devotes Wednesdays to Cuban politics. Fidel Castro led a revolution against the dictator Fulgencia Batista. He ruled the island nation from 1959 to 2008, when he stepped down from the presidency, passing it to his brother, Raul. Fidel Castro died in November 2016. Fernández also will speak on Thursday, March 9, at 6 p.m. at the San Carlos Institute on Duval Street, sponsored by the Key West Art & Historical Society.

M

arathon resident Bruce Ferraro just returned from Antarctica. “It’s my sixth continent, and next month I am going to Africa, the seventh,” said Ferraro. “In terms of people who have visited all of them, I think it’s like one percent.” Ferarro’s trip began with a flight to Santiago, Chile, then another flight to Punta Arenas. There he boarded a 400-foot ship with 300 other tough souls. The expedition took almost two weeks. “It’s very interactive once you get down there; you get off the ship twice a day,” he said. “I saw a million penguins, sea lions, seals, whales,

albatross. … The wildlife is amazing.” He said the cruise directors and passengers take extra precautions to preserve the pristine environment — going as far as to scrub their boots before and after landing. The real drama, though, happened on the way back to South America. In the Drake Passage — the roughest stretch of ocean in the world, just off Cape Horn — the ship sailed through a hurricane. Ferraro said the captain even handed out hurricane certificates, certifying their experience. “The seas were 39 to 40 feet high. To put that in perspective, that’s about as tall as the concrete electric poles in Marathon,” Ferraro said. And, yes, he’s taking the Conch Republic Flag to Africa, too, where he plans a photo safari and a shark cage dive. The Conch Republic flag will be making its way to Africa next month. CONTRIBUTED

O

n the little island of romance, located a short boat ride off Big Pine Key, Bryan Donohue fell in love with a job and met his wife. With four years of working as a bartender on the island under his belt, and a couple from when he was in high school as a dockhand, Donohue says the most popular drink is the Gumby Slumber. The 2001 Key West High School graduate, whose nickname growing up was Bottles, makes the drink with Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, orange juice, pineapple juice and cranberry juice. It's garnished with shaved coconut soaked in rum and an orange slice. “All of the guests who visit the island are given a Gumby Slumber on the boat ride over,” he said. “It’s a great boat drink and a staple on the island. Guests always ask for ‘the drink they had on the way over.’” He met his wife, Lauren, on the island, and they are expecting baby number one in about six months. When he isn’t working or prepping for baby, he’s on the boat exploring the out islands of the Keys.

TOOT THAT ‘HORN’ Conch shell contest Saturday

M

Gabriel Price, Alison Higgins, Jacqueline Luhta, Dee Dee Green, Kelly Perkins and friends pooled their creative genius to create their 2016 Papio Kinetic Parade Green Machine prize winner, “Awesoma, the Narwhal Queen” – a kinetic float sculpture made from a trike covered in a wide variety of reused and recycled items including plastic water bottles, music CDs, soda and beer cans, mattress springs, satellite dishes, tulle fabric and wine corks. rtists, builders and assemblers can put their creative and engineering skills on display in May. The Key West Art & Historical Society will host the second annual Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade May 5-7. Teams of any number and age are welcome to enter this parade of pedaled or pushed sculpture, whether the work is small and simple or elegantly engineered. The event is intended to reflect and promote the artistic culture of the Keys, said Michael Gieda, executive director of the society. Inspired by and named for the late Keys artist Stanley Papio, a humorous rebel metal-artist who explored the value of recycled materials long before it was hip to be rusty, the weekend’s events will kick off at the Custom House Museum on Friday, May 5 with a presentation on Papio and kinetic art from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a reception on the porch. The parade launches at noon on Saturday, May 6, followed by a beach-party celebration at the Southernmost Beach from 1 to 3 p.m., complete with cash awards for the best kinetic sculpture floats and art bikes.

Events wrap up on Sunday, May 7, with a Papio Picnic and Kinetic Kids Day at Fort East Martello Museum from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring a tour of the Papio Collection at noon, with family-friendly activities and food and drinks for purchase. Entrance to the museum that day will be free. Registration is $25 for kinetic sculpture floats and $15 for art bikes, with registration fees waived for society members. Cash prizes will be awarded for various categories. Registration deadline is Monday, May 1 for kinetic sculpture floats and May 6 for art bike entries (limited to first 100 registrants). More information is at papiokineticparade.com. — Contributed

any will try. Some will fail. Some will honk the conch. Several dozen people from around the country are expected to compete Saturday, March 4, in the 55th annual Conch Shell Blowing Contest. Blowing a conch shell might not rank high as a symphonic accomplishment, but aficionados are expected to "trumpet" their fondness for the quirky form of musical expression during an annual test of skill in Key West. Held at noon in the garden of the Oldest House Museum, 322 Duval St., the contest celebrates Key West's historic connection to the hardy sea mollusk. Blowing into the conchs' fluted pink-lined shells is a Key West tradition, with "conch horns" employed as signaling devices by early Native Americans, 19thcentury seafarers and resident shipwreck salvagers, among others. Today the conch shell remains an enduring symbol of the Florida Keys and Key West, whose native-born citizens call themselves "Conchs." Conch chowder and fritters are popu-

lar local dishes, and in 1982 the island chain staged a symbolic secession from the U.S. and proclaimed itself the independent Conch Republic. During the often hilarious Conch Shell Blowing Contest, contestants pucker up and attempt to make music (or at least respectable sounds) in front of a standing-room-only audience. Entrants typically include men, women, young children and groups. All are judged on the quality, duration, loudness and novelty of the sounds they produce. Nicknamed the "Conch Honk," the challenge is presented each spring by the Old Island Restoration Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of Key West. The 2017 contest is free to enter and watch. Contestants can register at the Oldest House Museum from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. Those without "instruments" can purchase conch shells on-site. KEYS DISEASE

MARATHON WEEKLY / MARCH 03, 2017

An Open Letter to Comcast …an alleged cable and Internet service provider Dear Comcast: You s&$k. am so sick and tired of the Internet outages … the cable television outages and freezes … and your pathetic and virtually useless “customer service.” I really don’t know what your problems are, but you need to fix them before another more reliable provider comes into this market and cleans your clock. The latest Comcast tragedy was a downed power line in Homestead that took out the fiber optic line that provides service to all the Keys. In the middle of the Oscars. This follows months of intermittent Internet service as well as semi-regular outages of Internet and TV service. The other recent huge TV outage (there are smaller ones all the time) happened during the AFC Championship game. I just wanted to watch the Steelers attempt to play the Patriots … but I couldn’t. The entire cable service froze. I spent nearly two hours that night on the phone in Comcast Customer Service Hell, first speaking with a technician who didn’t know an HD cable from a channel lineup card, and then waiting on hold for over 30 minutes for a supervisor who never picked up. And why does it feel that the entire Xfinity X1 “platform” is the biggest beta-testing experiment ever foisted on an unsuspecting public? And what is it with this renaming of overarching concepts to describe less-than-stellar service? It’s not Xfinity, it’s INfinity! Same with AT&T who took the “ni” out of U-verse. But I digress. Nearly every call I’ve made to Comcast Customer Service has ended without a good resolution. And I’ve received neither satisfaction nor any significant refund for the amount of frustration and lack of service I’ve endured. So imagine my surprise when I received an email this morning asking me to take a Comcast Customer Service survey! I did. My answers to their questions are as follows: “Why would/wouldn’t you recommend Comcast to your friends?” Your service is so damned inconsistent. I’ve had Internet problems for months, spent way too many hours on hold and (eventually) speaking with Comcast technicians who in many cases hadn’t a clue as to what the real issue was. Spent even longer on hold waiting for a supervisor to discuss a meaningful discount to compensate me for my time without service ... and receiving no call-backs and occasional pittance

amounts tossed my way. And the TV goes out at crucial live program times, like the AFC Championship Game and the Oscars. I really don’t get to watch that much TV, so when I do sit down, and the program can’t be seen because of problems with your (lack of) service, it is about as frustrating as dealing with Comcast customer “service.” “What could we do better?” What could you do better? Put the customer through to a supervisor who can really solve problems or at least provide real and significant refunds JOHN to frustrated cusBARTUS tomers for their loss of service at is a City Council crucial times. And here’s the big one: ACTUALLY PROVIDE THE SERVICE FOR WHICH I’M PAYING THROUGH THE NOSE! Is that clear enough? Apart from my survey answers, the other thing I would recommend to you, Comcast, is hiring enough qualified and competent people to ensure you might actually qualify as an actual cable and Internet service provider. The people you have working here are awesome and dedicated people, and they could use some real help that I’m sure they’re not getting from the penny-pinchers and bean-counters in the home office. Look, when your service works, it’s good (and quite expensive). But the fact that it so often doesn’t work, and you don’t seem to give a damn about fixing it or taking care of your customers, is the real tragedy here. In closing, allow me to repeat myself: Comcast, you s&$k. ••••• John Bartus performs Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek at the Holiday Inn Express, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, Friday with Jade Storm at the Overseas, and Saturday noon at the Lorelei in Islamorada and evening at the Key Colony Inn. www.johnbartus.com
