Boats are the preferred method of transportation in the Keys. And probably the most expensive. Like Conchs, boats come in all shapes, sizes and builds. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford the pricetag and upkeep necessitated by a seaworthy vessel. (You know what “boat” stands for? Bust out another thousand.) In a perfect world, everyone in the Keys would drive to and from work/play on their 39 foot SeaVees, drinking piña coladas, all while dolphin do backflips over the bow. Since it’s always nice to daydream, the Weekly asked locals…

If you were given a boat, what would you name it?

“Lucid,” said musician Ted Hyde. “Because if someone gave me a boat, it would be in a dream.”

Thousands are expected for the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market in Islamorada.

T

he signature fundraiser of the Upper Keys Rotary Club is the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market held at Founders Park in Islamorada, set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25-26. About 300 volunteers oversee the event that hosts thousands of visitors searching more than 220 vendor booths for deals on boats, nautical gear, fishing equipment, scuba stuff and even home décor.

The event sprawls all over Founders Park, with the main gate at the fire station on U.S.1 at MM 87. The food and drink is down by the beach and the booths are packed cheek-by-jowl along the lanes and on the lawn.

“At the Rotary food booth you’ll find hamburgers, chicken, hot dogs, and other food at affordable prices,” said Rotarian Frank Derfler. “At the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market you get low ‘boat show’ prices on boats and marine gear, but don’t pay the high ‘boat show’ prices to eat and drink. This is a family event that you’ll find affordably enjoyable.”

The event has raised more than $250 million in direct scholarship aid that has benefitted over 170 local graduating students and current college students. Rotarians from the other Keys clubs provide significant volunteer help to make this event a “gigantic” success.

“The Rotary Club Scholarship awards result from the effort of hundreds of people in the community who work the annual Gigantic Nautical Flea Market,” said Derfler.

“The planning cycle ends when we award the scholarships, then we get planning again for the following year.”

Sheriff’s deputies will be on hand directing traffic, but the large number of cars associated with this event will be an issue. Anyone traveling through the Islamorada area during this time should be aware of it and plan extra time for the trip. Those people needing to make flights in Miami should plan up to an extra two hours in order to make it in time.

‘BAREFOOT GENEALOGIST’ TO SPEAK

rofessional genealogist Crista Cowan from Ancestry.com, hosted by the Florida Keys Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, will give a special Ancestry presentation on Monday, March 6.

“I have attended Cowan’s powerfully informative presentations and some of the stories she relates are personal – she has you crying and laughing at the Genealogist same time,” said Crista Cowan DAR Regent Karen Kovarik. “In addition, for attendees to pay only $30, which includes lunch, is unheard of. Genealogy sessions normally cost big bucks!”

Cowan, “The Barefoot Genealogist,” has been with Ancestry.com since 2004. She will discuss how to navigate the Ancestry.com website and “discover ‘Who Do You Think You Are’,” said Kovarik.

he Islamorada Chamber of Commerce met on Feb. 21 and 22 to mingle, talk business, and network at its monthly after-hours and luncheon. First State Bank of Islamorada hosted the after-hour’s get-together, where finger food, drinks, and an art raffle entertained attendees. The following day, the chamber reconvened at the Postcard Inn for its monthly meeting. Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi and Islamorada Councilwoman Deb Gillis updated members on the progress of various projects and the outlook for other initiatives around the Upper Keys.

T

he Cat Daddies are every bit as slick as their stage names.

Be warned: If you bring your momma to a show, she may end up dancing on the stage. You can blame Buddy McGee’s vocals and rhythm guitar. Or maybe Bones Hopkins started shredding her favorite solo. Then again, it might have been because Steel-eye Davis never misses a beat on drums … but more than likely it was Big Baby Franklin slapping his bass like it owes him money. It doesn’t matter. These guys rock.

Buddy McGee, the band’s founding member, played in bands in college, and came up learning songs by Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and many other hits the Cat Daddies still play. His door to the music industry began with an internship at Alligator Records in Chicago. He’d later go on to bigger and better things, producing more than 60 major label releases in Brazil.

He then teamed up with Islamorada native Big Baby Franklin to form the Cat Daddies, and crowds have been purring ever since. Franklin, who digs a lot of the heavier stuff, revealed that his root influences are groups The Who, Led Zeppelin, and Rush.

“Nowadays I like to rock stuff like Mastodon, Opeth, (and other progressive metal),” said Big Baby Franklin.

Meet the Cat Daddies: Bones Hopkins, left, drummer Steeleye Davis, Big Baby Franklin, and Buddy McGee bring the house down.

Around 2006, Bones Hopkins came onboard after McGee’s neighbors referred the guitarist in passing. After a twist of fate brought Hopkins down for New York, he took over lead work for the Cat Daddies and backs McGee on vocals. Most of his riffing goes note for note with some of the legends. It’s hard to look away when Bones is getting busy.

After cycling drummers, they’ve brought on Steeleye Davis. After a recent performance at Hog Heaven, Davis revealed that a broken toe and crippling flu wouldn’t stop him from doing his thing that night. After a break from drumming, Davis has been part of the band for two years now.

For the better part of a decade, the Cat Daddies have been getting around the south Florida music scene. The band describes itself as a blues and rock oriented act that plays music from the 1970s and modern rock.

Originally from Saskatchewan, Canada, Jefferies has been slinging drinks on and off for 20 years. Februarys use to feel a little colder, but as she’s acclimated to the Keys, so have her seasonal drinks.

“How does a margarita sound?” she asked. It sounds excellent.

A little Franco’s sour mix, Patron, triple sec, splash of orange juice, and Jefferies’ margarita will set the tone for the rest of your afternoon.

“I enjoy making some of the sweeter shots like green tea and white gummy bear shots,” she added.

Jefferies made her way to the Keys after vacationing with her husband Kevin. Having previously worked for a small boat manufacturer, Kevin decided to start a career in the fishing charter industry. He runs the 26-foot Pacemaker of First Down Charters. Though the family business is fishing, Kim prefers snorkeling and diving, and when ashore, loves watching her son play lacrosse.

U

pper Keys Rotary President Frank Derfler is a jack of many trades and a master of most of them. Derfler retired after a successful career as a senior editor for consumer magazines. In 1989 he founded one of the first magazine-based testing facilities, PC magazine’s Local Area Network Laboratories. In all, Derfler has published two novels and 22 technical books, but now only writes books for family, friends, and fun. As an educator of communication, Derfler has taught at the University of New York, and locally at Coral Shores High School. Along with an accomplished professional career, Derfler served 20 years in the Air Force before honorably retiring. As a recreational pilot, Derfler has logged 600 hours in his Zodiac 601XL light sport airplane. Nowadays, he spends his time enjoying the sunset on his bayside porch and devoting his efforts to various organizations in the Upper Keys.

As a senior editor of a series of magazines, what grammatical or spelling mistakes have become pet peeves?

Go on a "which" hunt. If you use "which" in a sentence, you need to rewrite the sentence. The Oxford comma is a GOOD thing. Those that don't use the Oxford comma are misguided.

You served the armed forces for more than 20 years, eventually retiring as an Air Force officer. Where was the most interesting place you visited?

The "E" Ring of the Pentagon. I had an office in room 5E486. The 5th floor of the Pentagon was an afterthought.

There are no outside windows. My bosses all had offices on the 3rd and 4th floors. There is serious business going on there, many good people working hard.

What style of leadership did your military experience give you the most?

Ask questions that are really suggestions.

Having established one of the first magazine based testing laboratories in the country, what did it teach you about communicating with consumers?

I worked for the magazine magnate Bill Ziff. He preached, "Make the who, what, when, and where available to the reader." He also preached, "Every cover should sell sex, power, or money. Preferably all three."

With two novels and 22 books published, which was the most rewarding book you’ve written? Why? My most rewarding books are those that I only circulate to family and friends. I don't have to be politically correct.

Since retiring, how have you involved yourself in supporting the Keys community?

I served on the board of the Good Health Clinic, a Founder at Mariners Hospital, and I'm on the board of the Wild Bird Center.

This year I have the privilege of being the president of the Upper Keys Rotary Club.

Beyond technology and its advancements in the field of communication, you bring up the notion of disintermediation – or getting rid of the middle man. Briefly explain its prevalence in media; cite some examples.

Disintermediation. It brought you eBay and Amazon. Cut out the middle man.

It is a new era sweeping away the old, but not without a lot of screaming.

Did Amazon "destroy" Sears or did Sears fail to adapt?

People always purchased the newspaper or magazines that matched their own ideas. Now, they can connect with others directly. The result has been called an “echo chamber.” It's a new form of interaction, but it isn't unique.

People always have a tendency to cluster with others like themselves. Now, it's easier.

The use of psychographics, the study of personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles, is becoming commonplace for websites. How have you seen its use trend in communication and marketing?

We have always written to a "target audience." Now, computers and statistics guide the delivery of the message. The same tool, only more precise. It also enhances the echo chamber effect.

After teaching at Coral Shores High School, what was your favorite part of working with local kids?

I still try to make every meeting of the Coral Shores High School Interact club. I am an active part of our Rotary scholarship committee. We interview the scholarship applicants and get to know them well. Then, the most rewarding part is getting the reports back as the students go through school.

In terms of marketing, what is the number one form of communication that reaches locals and tourists for the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market?

We have conducted surveys of our attendees with very large sample sizes. When asked how they found out about the event, the vast majority of people say, "I just knew." That tells you a LOT about the validity of polling! The second most common answer is "Signs along the highway." That's why you will see magnetic signs on the cars of Rotarians and the wrap on our trailer.

What is the last book you read?

Who are some authors you respect?

Many of your readers who like the outdoors would like the "Woods Cop" series written by Joseph Haywood. Highly recommended.

Name one historical figure you’d like to share a meal with.

I daydream about meeting Benjamin Franklin. That would be so much fun. I've often read about his life and times. It would be such fun telling him things.

Back to the sea It takes a village to save a sea turtle, and on Feb. 18, a village (Islamorada) came out and offered amazing support for a sea turtle's return to sea!

Marilyn, a 160-pound sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle, was rescued in late December from Tavernier Creek, where she was found floating and unable to dive. Marilyn was emaciated and treated at the Turtle Hospital for an intestinal impaction. She gained over 20 pounds while convalescing and was back in good health. Marilyn arrived at Founder's Park Beach in the Turtle Hospital ambulance, where she was greeted by more than 100 folks there to wish her well. Kids gathered around to hear Marilyn's story and learn about ways they can help to protect sea turtles. Marilyn had a proper sendoff and went back to the wild! CONTRIBUTED

History museum shows movies

The monthly meeting of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles will be held on Wednesday, March 1 at the Tavernier Elks Lodge, located on the Overseas Highway, MM 92.6. The public is invited at 9:30 a.m. to socialize before the program begins at 10 a.m.

‘Bloodline’ actor to attend Habitat fundraiser

“Bloodline’s” bad boy Kevin Rayburn, will be at the Habitat for Humanity Cocktail Party on Friday, March 3 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. He’ll be there to share some of his experiences living and working in the Keys.

Butz won Tony awards on Broadway for Best Actor in a Musical for “Catch Me If You Can” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.”

He also received the Drama Desk Award for Best Actor in a Musical for those roles, as well as several nominations for his Broadway performances in “Cabaret,” “Thou Shalt Not,” “Buicks,” and “The Last Five Years.” He participated in the producing, writing and recording of The Angel Band Project’s album “Take You With Me,” for which all proceeds benefit the Voices and Faces Project. The project’s mission is to create a network of survivors willing to speak out about sexual violence.

Butz’s sister was sexually assaulted and murdered in 2009.

Sheriff announces next citizen’s academies

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will be holding its next Citizen’s Police Academies starting the week of March 6 through graduation the week of April 12. In the Upper Keys, classes will meet at the Roth Building on Plantation Key. In the Middle Keys, classes will meet at the Sheriff’s Office Aviation Hangar in Marathon. In the Lower Keys, classes will meet at the Sheriff’s Headquarters building on Stock Island. The classes will take one night a week from 6 to 9 p.m. including one ride-along with a deputy. Classes will be held in the individual district holding the academy.

The Murray Nelson Government Center hosted the culinary event, as well as a book signing, auction, and talent show by the Granny Rapperz. The Visiting Nurses Association & Hospice of the Florida Keys holds the event to help fund palliative and hospice services in the Keys.

Local restaurants prepared dishes representative of various countries and styles of food.

Chefs from Kaiyo Grill & Sushi, the Green Turtle Inn Restaurant, White Lion Café, the Fish House Restaurant/Encore, Playa Largo Resort and the Hilton Key Largo Resort showcased their tasty creations.

Stage fright nowhere in sight

C

oral Shores High School is proud to present its most ambitious production to date – the Phantom of the Opera.

Debuting on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., the show has been in the works since last school year. Through the hard work of Director/Producer Michele Zofchak, every element of the famed musical tragedy has been given life. An enormous crew of students, their families, local businesses, and the community at large have come together to aid in the show’s success in numerous ways. The cast’s greatest feat, a twostory revolving set stage, will remain in use long after the production, said Zofchak, and serve as a reminder of how hard these students worked.

MEET THE STUDENTS BEFORE THEY TAKE THE STAGE. GRAYSON COX Class: Senior Character: Madame Giry In his fifth and final production at Coral Shores, Grayson Cox says he’s happy to go out on a high note with the school’s largest production.

Fitting into character has been Cox’s biggest challenge this time around.

“Madame Giry is a complex character. She’s stern but loving,” said Cox, adding “it’s quite difficult for me to match the character’s voice, she’s an alto or soprano, and I’m a baritenor.”

Cox says he’s also enjoyed the set build process and painting the different backdrops.

“The revolving stage is amazing.

Every time I see it in action I can’t believe we built it,” said Cox. Cox plans to go to New York after high school to major in music theater.

He’s already familiar with the scene.

“I’d say our version of ‘Phantom’ rivals the Broadway version I’ve seen,” said Cox. “But maybe I’m just biased.”

ALEXIS DURAN Class: Senior Character: Christine Daae Playing the role of the Christine Daae, Alexis Duran has been working on expanding her range into what her character requires for more than a year.

Thanks to vocal guru Suzanne Gagliardini, Duran said her singing style is more operatic than it was when she started.

Duran said since September, she’s put in more than 100 hours into backstage work, set building, and helping coordinate the music with the intricacies of the production. Now in her fifth production, Duran is excited to put on a quality show for her family, especially those coming from out of state just to see the show.

“The show is a lot more advanced than what you would expect from a high school show. The paintings on the set took a lot of effort by many different student artists,” said Duran.

DANIEL WALKER Class: Senior Character: Richard Firman David Walker describes his character of Richard Firman as a “bed-hopping French capitalist.”

Now in his sixth production with Zofchak, Walker recognizes a bond among the cast.

“It’s like a family. I’ve known these people my whole life and have enjoyed working with them; it’s been fun,” said Walker. “Because it’s like a family, there is the occasional in-fighting, but we work through it, and get back to business.”

Walker had lofty praise for Zofchak.

“Ms. Z works really hard, sometimes too hard. To us, she’s like a mother figure,” said Walker. “She always puts in 110 percent effort, and does the work of 12 people.”

With the addition of the enormous revolving stage, Walker said the show is going to be larger than life, and definitely larger than anyone expected.

DAVID MARYIANSKI Class: Junior Character: The Phantom In only his third production at Coral Shores, Maryianski has been tapped to be the Phantom of the Opera. Maryianski said it’s been challenging getting into the often misunderstood character.

“He’s a great composer, magician, architect, and musical prodigy. He’s just angry at the world for judging and shunning him,” said the young lead.

“His personality is the opposite of how I am. He’s angry and I’m not; I’m more of a joker.”

In the last year, Maryianski has worked with Gagliardini to help his vocal range expand. He said he’s evolved as a singer and credits the role with challenging him to do so. More than a year ago, he started listening to the music to better understand the direction and inflection of each line. The Maryianski family, parents included, have all helped in the production.

ZANE ABSTEN Class: Junior Character: Raoul Vicomte De Chagny In first grade, Zane Absten wore a costume of the Phantom for Halloween.

When asked how it feels to be cast as the antagonist to the Phantom, Absten replied, “I’m ok with it. It was too hard to make me look that ugly anyways.”

Since his first role ever, as an oompa loompa, to now in his ninth production as a lead, Absten said he’s always liked being the center of attention.

Absten has been on board with the production since the cast and crew were bagging groceries at Publix to raise money to buy the rights to the show. Now that they’ve come so far, he’s proud of the work everyone has put in.

“I think it’s on par with a professional production, if not better,” said Absten.

fter months of raising moolah, the final donations were tallied up. At the end, Kahunas John Gallant, Adriana Cuomo, “Retz” Reeves, and Dr. Bob Foley raised more than $50,000 for the Good Health Clinic. Throughout each of their respective campaigns, the four contestants found ways to bring attention to the good efforts of the clinic, while also raising a lot of money.

Alongside last year’s winner, Nelson Sanchez, clinic Executive Director Kate Banick thanked the four for their hard work and talked a bit about the services the clinic provides.

But there can be only one Big Kahuna — Retz Reeves. She raised a cool $16,390.

Have scholarship, will travel

Students accepted to Experiment in International Living

F

ifteen high school students from the Keys are going on an adventure. The merit-based scholarship winners are taking part in the Experiment in International Living (EIL), an international cross-cultural program, this summer.

“These students will be traveling to 11 different countries and 12 different programs, and received $20,000 in merit-based scholarships, in addition to $11,000 in needbased financial aid from The Experiment,” said Aaron Morehouse, executive director.

The students were selected based on an essay contest.

“The Experiment actively recruits students from Monroe County,” said Heather Beard, the program’s director of admissions and financial aid. In 2016, EIL gave presentations at the three public high schools and Key West Collegiate Academy. Students who had experienced a trip were invited on stage to address their peers.

In addition to the 15 essay winners, EIL has three other Keys students participating this summer in three other countries through three additional Experiment programs.

“One student, Divya Navani, a freshman at Key West High School, received a prestigious full scholarship. She will participate in the ‘Argentina: Community Service and the Great Outdoors’ program,’” Morehouse said.

There are also 36 more applications from Take Stock in Children student scholars and EIL administrators said about 40 participants from the Keys will travel this summer.

“Monroe County has the highest number of students participating than any other county in the U.S., outside of the New York City metro area,” Morehouse said.

The students will depart in June in small groups with other students from across the U.S. on four- and five-week summer programs for high school students in Europe; the Americas; Africa, south of the Sahara; North Africa and the Middle East; and Asia and the Pacific. Students are challenged to explore the host country through hands-on experiences in local communities through the lens of a specific theme, including: sustainability and the environment; arts and social change; language and cultural discovery; leadership training; or peace, politics, and human rights.

CSHS TRAVELERS Coral Shores High School students who will be taking part in the Experiment in International Living’s cross-cultural program this summer: ALYSSA SLOCUMB, In her essay, freshman Alyssa Slocumb discussed her passion for Japanese animation, otherwise known as anime or manga. “I have been wanting to go to Japan for years and im really excited for the trip,“ she said. Japnese animes like Blue Exorcist and Black Butler have fostered Slocumb’s imagination in this diverse field of artwork. In her free time she draws her own anime.

ALEJANDRO TOVAR-MORALES, Having traveled around Europe, the Venezulean born sophomore has always wanted to learn about an asian culture — so he chose Japan. “I really found interest in how they do things, especially because they were isolationist and still managed to grow a divese culture,“ said Tovar Morales. Having written about language, culture and traditions, he’s most excited to learn about poetry, religion, and Japanese literature.

JULIANNE JANKOWSKI, “I though it was a really interesting topic, especially during the election and times of political unrest,“ said Jankowski of her essay based around the European Union and contemporary politics. She’ll have an opportunity to see European politics firsthand when she sits in at the European Parilament in Brussels. With the goal of developing peace building tactics and human rights knowledge, Jankowski says she has an interest in activism.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you?

I am involved in the Coral Shores High School band and Take Stock in Children also. Band is important, as playing an instrument lets you play your feeling and expressions. Take Stock is important as it teaches me college readiness and leadership skills.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why?

My biggest inspiration at Coral Shores would have to be Mrs. Wischmeier. The reason why is because she teaches math very well and my skills have been greater ever since I’ve been in her class.

I was never good at math before 10th grade.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why?

I feel that the class that prepared me for life after high school would be math, as my career choice involves a lot of it.

Too much building of franchise business. I would stress the importance of local business and encourage more local business building.

Why or why not?

I’m not really sure. It all depends on my career and what jobs are available in the Keys that involve computers.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center - Program Director The Domestic Abuse Shelter (DAS), a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, has an opening for a full-time Program Director. Candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. Responsibilities include the day to day supervision and management of DAS residential facilities and outreach programs.

The Program Director possesses at minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence, or high school/equivalency and four years providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence. Two years of successful supervisory experience in a domestic violence and/or sexual assault agency is required. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups, proven experience training staff, and excellent organizational skills.
