A month removed from the transfer of power between two presidential administrations, there is a lot to talk about. Donald Trump’s presidency has brought about reforms in a lot of areas. Immigration policy, regulatory rules, foreign policy strategy and cabinet resignations − we’ve seen a lot in only a short time. While some have welcomed the new changes, others have expressed concern. In the interest of healthy political debate, the Weekly asked locals…
How do you think the new President is doing?

Yansi Fanco, also of Wendy’s said, “He’s doing a bad job. This is a country of immigrants. Now some immigrants are scared to send their kids to school and go to work because they’re afraid.”

full week of family-friendly, mostly free outdoor adventures and hands-on activities is just ahead, including a glimpse into a refuge that normally is closed to the public. From Saturday, March 11 through Saturday, March 18, the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuge Complex and their Friends group FAVOR (Friends And Volunteers Of Refuges) host the second annual Outdoor Fest that encourages people to get outside in a wildlife-friendly manner while promoting the history and stewardship of the refuges. Newest to the four Florida Keys Refuges is the remote Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge,

a 37-year-old refuge at MM 106.3 on Card Sound Road off U.S. 1. The events in the Upper Keys portion of the fest provide a rare glimpse into this refuge that is typically closed to the public due to the number of extremely endangered species that inhabit it and are sensitive to human impact. The refuge’s name alone suggests one of them — the federally endangered American crocodile —attracted to the large dredged berms along the
canal banks of a former major housing complex project that ultimately “failed.” Kayak tours through the mangroves into Barnes Sound, tropical hardwood hammock nature walks, and an evening outdoor experience attracting Florida Keys moths and other cool insects with “Moth Man” citizen scientist David Fine are all safe and educational opportunities to possibly view this elusive, toothy creature and the many others that inhabit the area. The fest includes everything from
educational nature walks, history talks, and get-your-hands dirty gardening workshops that educate on the importance of composting and replacing invasive exotic plants with natives. “Some of the most troublesome invasive plants we have on the refuge include Brazilian pepper and Australian pine,” said Jeremy Dixon, Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge Manager. “They can out-compete native plants and the wildlife that depends on the native plants suffer.” These events and the other Outdoor Fest events, which are offered throughout the four Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges, will provide participants with plenty of opportunities to enjoy these special public lands designated to protect and maintain the many natural habitats and creatures found in them. For more information about the refuges, FAVOR, and the list of events, visit www.favorfloridakeys. org/outdoor-fest or contact Kristie Killam at 305.304.9625 or email Nancy or Jan at flkeysoutdoorfest@ gmail.com. — Contributed

MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 24, 2017
Week 2 The teams with the highest percentage of weight loss from Feb. 6-13 are listed below.
Going forward, the Weekly will list the teams that have lost the biggest percentage since the last weigh-in. That means that the leading teams may not be listed in the paper every week. The team with the highest percentage of weight loss will be revealed at the final awards party. The Weekly will also provide details about each weigh-in on its Facebook page, “Marathon Meltdown.” Join the group for updates about team successes, recipes, tips and other reminders. Teams marked with an asterisk (*) had at least one member miss the previous weigh-in. Although we still calculated the team’s percentage of weight loss, it was weight-loss achieved over two weeks.

Goblet Squats Start by standing straight with legs shoulder-width apart. Balance a dumbbell on end and choose a comfortable weight. Lower yourself until the knees reach a 90-degree angle, while keeping your trunk and core tight, and head at a neutral and natural angle. Pick up the weight as if you’re holding a goblet and carefully press off the ground without bouncing from the previous movement. (Don’t lean forward; this is key to remaining injury-free.) Continue to move from a straight position to the 90-degree bend and don’t place the weight back on the ground. — Liz Kuck, Keys Strength and Conditioning, keysstrength@gmail.com

n the eve of the 41st anniversary of the Marathon Seafood Festival, it’s time to take a look back at the fishermen and their families who have put their backs into making this festival successful. Often, local families take over a particular task — making the seafood dinners, creating the fish dip, or frying the conch fritters to perfection — and do it for years. The new generation is born into the job and takes it over as they come of age. Mix and match the photos and names from this batch of 1990s photos of the Marathon Seafood Festival from the collection of Marathon’s Bennett Orr. — Weekly Staff report

oward Livingston is known for “Living on Key West Time,” but on Thursday, March 2, he will be living on Marathon time. In the annual fundraising concert, Livingston will play acoustics with bandmates Rick Cleaver and Tim Alpine of the Mile Marker 24 Band at Marathon Yacht Club. “Marathon is a great city,” said Livingston. “The folks at the yacht club are so wonderful and so generous.” In the past two concerts, the yacht club has raised almost $50,000 for Howard’s charity of choice, KOA Care Camps for children battling cancer. This year, the concert will raise funds for local youth — scholarships money and the summer sailing camps the Marathon Yacht Club hosts. “When we started the Marathon Yacht Club Educational Foundation, we wanted to do something for kids here in the Keys,” said Jann Mellman, who is passionate about teaching local youth the ways of the water. The foundation started in 2013, and has since given $20,000 in scholarships to Marathon High School graduates and adults seeking money for marine related education. “We really want to increase the number of kids who participate in the summer sailing program,” Mellman said. “We are looking to add a meal program into this summer’s camp. Marathon Yacht Club has already said they would donate three-day’s worth of food for the kids. We are hoping we can find someone else who can donate food on Mondays and Tues-
days when the club is closed.” Mellman added that Livingston has been so gracious over the years and that the event is open to the public. “We really need the public to come out and support this,” she said. The educational foundation is a separate 501(c) (3) organization from the club, and she has high hopes that the community will continue to support such a worthy cause. Tickets are $85 and include the music of Livingston and his bandmates, as well as a silent auction, and food. There will be a cash bar. Doors open at 6 p.m. with Livingston playing from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.mycef.education/.

Bargain hunt is on Gigantic Nautical Flea Market raises funds for Rotary scholarships
T
he signature fundraiser of the Upper Keys Rotary Club is the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market held at Founders Park in Islamorada, set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25-26. About 300 volunteers oversee the event that hosts thousands of visitors searching more than 220 vendor booths for deals on boats, nautical gear, fishing equipment, scuba stuff and even home décor. The event sprawls all over Founders Park, with the main gate at the fire station on U.S.1 at MM 87. The food and drink is down by the beach and the booths are packed cheek-byjowl along the lanes and on the lawn. “At the Rotary food booth you’ll find hamburgers, chicken, hot dogs, and other food at affordable prices,” said Rotarian Frank Derfler. “At the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market you get low ‘boat show’ prices on boats and marine gear, but don’t pay the high ‘boat show’ prices to eat and drink. This is a family event that you’ll find affordably enjoyable.” The event has raised more than $250 million in direct scholarship aid that has benefitted over 170 local graduating students and current college students. Rotarians from the other Keys clubs provide significant volunteer help to make this event a “gigantic” success. “The Rotary Club Scholarship awards result from the effort of hundreds of people in the community who work the annual Gigantic Nautical Flea Market,” said Derfler. “The planning cycle ends when we award the scholarships, then we get planning again for the following year.” —Weekly Staff report
• DATES: The event runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26. It’s held at Founder’s Park in Islamorada, MM 87. • PARKING: Parking is at Coral Shores High School, MM 89, oceanside. Shuttle buses run continuously. • GATE: The gate is located on the southwest end of the park at the Fire Station. Suggested admission donation is $5.
Pet Friendly Food & Drink Restrooms & ATMs Kids Activites Beach Access Free WiFi
The annual Gigantic Nautical Flea Market is expected to cause heavy traffic and significant delays for drivers. Sheriff’s deputies will be on hand directing traffic, but the large number of cars associated with this event will be an issue. Anyone traveling through the Islamorada area during this time should be aware of it and plan extra time for the trip. Those people needing to make flights in Miami should plan up to an extra two hours in order to make it in time.

esidents and visitors got a bird’s-eye view of the Marathon area via a Ford TriMotor airplane that took up residence last week at the Marathon Airport. In flights lasting about 15 minutes, the 1929 plane – which has previously been an Eastern Airlines plane, a Cuban airliner, and had roles in two movies – circled from the airport over Marathon, over the Seven Mile Bridge, Boot Key Harbor, Vaca Cut and more. The Tri-Motor, owned by the Wisconsin-based Experimental Aircraft Association, could handle nine passengers at a time in the seats that are more generous in leg room than their more modern counterparts. The tour’s next stop was in Naples, Florida. —Weekly Staff report SARA MATTHIS & MIKE HOWIE/Keys Weekly 1. Capt. Tom Leahy grabs the controls. His co-pilot was Evan Doumis of Overseas Aero Tours. 2. Marathon Cinema Movie Theater The Marathon Cinema, established in 1996, is the only movie theater located in the Middle Keys. It is nearly 50 miles to other cinemas in Monroe County. First-run movies are shown daily from the quaint 100-seat theater where guests can sit at a table and enjoy food, beer and wine, or be seated in more traditional theater seating. Marathon Cinema is a non-profit entity and is a part of the Marathon Community Theatre playhouse group. A long history of operation generated by locals has contributed to our success over the years, since it is run by neighbors and friends in the community. “Marathon Cinema is a place for small-town social interaction,” said cinema manager Sam Nekhaila. “Being able to go to the movies and sit at tables with friends to enjoy food and drinks creates a sense of a close-knit community where people enjoy spending time with others doing something fun.” Location: 5101 Overseas Highway, Marathon Phone: 305-743-0288 Website: marathoncinema.com

4. This Dodge Lake home claims winding paths and trees, a meditation corner, swim up pool bar, and trees marked with names. This oasis has rare plants like Red Congo palm, rainbow eucalyptus, lignum vitae, noni and breadfruit tree, as well as mature native trees along the landscape.
2. The stunning view of the Gulf from this behind-the-airport property was overgrown with weeds when it was bought four years ago. Outdoor living spaces and entertainment areas were added with an extensive variety of bromeliads. The owner has taken her gardening vertical by adding bromeliads and orchids to any host tree available. 3. Down the street from Garden Two, Hurricane Wilma wiped this garden’s slate clean in 2005. The property now boasts a secret garden, a peninsula overlooking the Gulf, and a variety of native trees and plants that iguanas find distasteful.
5. This Flamingo Isle home and garden is owned by a local artist and spills creativity from every corner. The home features art collected from her world travels, open air entertaining spaces, and her artist studio. The garden resonates a Bali feel with meditative gardens, koi pond, and spiritual statutes. A walk along the paths will be heaven for garden-lovers’ eyes. 6.The grounds of the 24-slip live-aboard marina overlooking Florida Bay is maintained with draught, wind and salt resistant plants and wild orchids. The private community has entertaining areas, a tidal pool, and mangrove pathway. Weather permitting, live-aboard boat tours will also be included.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW
E
lio Pis was born in Cuba and raised there until he was 12 years old, when he moved to Marathon with his dad, Alberto. His father fled Cuba looking for freedom and better opportunities for his family, sisters Grethell and Isabella, and mom Maria. After graduating from Marathon High School in 2006, Pis received a bachelor’s degree from FIU, and has been steady on the modeling circuit for Ford Models in South Beach. He spends his off time in the Keys as an “orchestra man,” as his dad calls it, “a man who does a little of everything.” KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com
1. Nickname? Drip is my checkers name. One drop at a time, I can fill an ocean, it just takes patience. 2. Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating … who walks in and sits next to you? Jesus sits next to me. Wouldn't it be cool if he would turn my water into wine? 3. What helped you learn English the fastest? American girls. 4. How high maintenance were the models you’ve dated? They were pretty expensive at the maintenance shop. 5. You look tough; can you kick butt? I train in martial arts to keep my body and mind strong, stay humble, and be prepared. I love to stay sharp and ready. I am a mere green belt in Jiu

ELIO PIS Jitsu, but I am the meanest, baddest, yet the most gentle and humble practitioner you've ever seen. 6. What happens when you’re at the beach? I can't go to the beach in my Speedos without the ladies pulling out their cameras. 7. Which TV or movie character is your alter ego? “I'm your huckleberry,” baby. Doc Holliday from the movie “Tombstone.” 8. What is your nerdiest passion? Checkers! I have easily played 20,000 checkers games. I have played against legends who I used to read about in books. I aspire to be a checkers world champion maybe in my 40s or 50s when I have more free time. 9. How many times a month do you have to be in South Beach? I go as needed to castings and auditions, and to do the jobs required as a model and actor. It is also a great city to unwind and have a little fun. 10. If you could take one item on a deserted island, what? I would take an acoustic guitar, so I could serenade the mermaids at night. 11. The boat is sinking; what do you grab? The cooler with the drinks.
12. What would your superpower be? Biggest charmer on earth. 13. What was your first thought this morning? Hustle. 14. Pet peeve about modeling? Hurry up and wait. 15. If you could change the world, what would you do? I would make nature our priority — less concrete and more trees. I
recommend visiting Yosemite National Park at least once in your lifetime. 16. Who is your celebrity crush, and why? Catherine Zeta-Jones was stunningly beautiful in the movie “Zorro” back in the day. I used to get jealous at El Zorro for taking her. 17. What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be an FBI agent when I grew up. I might still try that someday. We'll see. Finish these sentences. 18. My autobiography would be titled … “He came, He conquered, He left.” 19. At the end of a rainbow there is … a magical place where the colors of the rainbow touch the ground. I've seen it with my own eyes as a child. 20. I live by the motto … do what makes you happy and fulfills your soul; life is short.

Spring fashion trends Spring is upon us which means it’s time to give your wardrobe a refresh. Bemusings. fore buying a new item, envision three outfits the new piece can be worn with. If you can only think of one, then let it go as it will spend more time hanging in your closet than being worn. Here are a few of the hottest trends for spring to get your wardrobe ready for the season: All things pink At the top of my list for spring must-haves is hot pink. Girly girls will rejoice this season as the color is making a major statement from bright fuschia to dusty rose, pretty in pink is the unofficial color of the season. Break out all your prettiest pinks this spring for casual outings to the beach and more formal evening occasions. Statement sleeves The cold shoulder was big in 2016, but this season, statement sleeves ranged from ’80s-inspired puffball sleeves, single shoulder cutouts, flouncy ruffles, bell sleeves, and voluminous rounded shoulders. This spring it’s all about proportion with lots of attention on your arms. Look for blouses, shirt dresses and knitwear with lots of sleeve style. Graphic stripes Nautical stripes are a spring staple typically found in bright whites and classic navy. This season stripes are bright and bold in criss-cross patterns, vibrant geometric prints, and rainbowbright hues. Stripes are no longer your classic basic; they’ve received a jolt of energy in graphic primary colors that stand all on their own. Pair these bold prints with minimal accessories to let the pattern take center stage.
Metallics Sequins and metallics are usually reserved for holidays and New Year’s Eve parties but this spring, designers are loving head-to-toe gold and silver. For a modern feel, pair a metallic skirt with a graphic stripe or bright floral pattern along with chic sneakers for a more casual look. Floral Florals are a classic must-have for spring, but this season gives blossom prints a ’70s spin with bright contrast hues such as pink, orange and green in feminine silhouettes. If you’re wearing head-to-toe floral with a bright dress, opt for classic accessories such as a metallic or neutral sandal or wedge. Athleisure Athleisure got a sexy upgrade this season with body-hugging knits that outline every curve. Leggings are another classic sportswear that’s been reinvented this season. This ready-towear basic was found on the runway in velvet, lace and spandex for a high fashion feel. And don’t forget about the hoodie. You’ll find hoodies on jackets, vests and shirts for a laid-back feel. Statement earrings Over-the-top ear candy is everywhere this spring. These statementmakers are the accessory of the season. Go big or go home this spring when it comes to your ears. Pair these decadent, brightly colored earrings with a simple romper and sandals for a chic look. Happy Shopping!

EDUCATION
MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 24, 2017
Have scholarship, will travel
Students accepted to Experiment in International Living
F
ifteen high school students from the Keys are going on an adventure. The merit-based scholarship winners are taking part in the Experiment in International Living (EIL), an international cross-cultural program, this summer. “These students will be traveling to 11 different countries and 12 different programs, and received $20,000 in merit-based scholarships, in addition to $11,000 in need-based financial aid from The Experiment,” said Aaron Morehouse, executive director. The students were selected based on an essay contest. “The Experiment actively recruits students from Monroe County,” said Heather Beard, the program’s director of admissions and financial aid. In 2016, EIL gave presentations at the three public high schools and Key West Collegiate Academy. Students who had experienced a trip were invited on stage to address their peers. In addition to the 15 essay winners, EIL has three other Keys students participating this summer in three other countries through three additional Experiment programs. “One student, Divya Navani, a freshman at Key West High School, received a prestigious full scholarship. She will participate in the ‘Argentina: Community Service and the Great Outdoors’ program,’” Morehouse said. There are also 36 more applications from Take Stock in Children student scholars and EIL administrators said about 40 participants from the Keys will travel this summer. “Monroe County has the highest number of students participating than any other county in the U.S., outside of the New York City metro area,” Morehouse said. The students will depart in June in small groups with other students from across the U.S. on four- and five-week summer programs for high school students in Europe; the Americas; Africa, south of the Sahara; North Africa and the Middle East; and Asia and the Pacific. Students are challenged to explore the host country through hands-on experiences in local communities through the lens of a specific theme, including: sustainability and the environment; arts and social change; language and cultural discovery; leadership training; or peace, politics, and human rights. The Experiment in International Living, a program of World Learning, has been offering immersive experiential learning programs abroad since 1932. More information is at www.experiment.org.

MHS TRAVELERS
The Marathon High School students who will be taking part in the Experiment in International Living’s crosscultural program this summer: Abbie Franck, right Abbie’s family has German roots, so she’s excited to visit Germany, Belgium and Netherlands this summer. For four weeks, this MHS sophomore will be studying contemporary politics and the European Union. “I visited Washington, D.C. in the fifth grade and really enjoyed learning about our history and government. I think I will enjoy Germany, too.” Her themed visit, however, is completely different than the degree she plans on acquiring — engineering. “I really love math and science,” she said. Amber Romance, left “I’ve always wanted to go to Europe in general. And when I saw this program, I knew that this was it,” said Amber, a sophomore at MHS. She will be studying the French culture and regional identity. The group will travel around the country, and will live with a family for part of her three-week stay in France. “We’ll be studying the cuisine, participating in outdoor activities and learning the language,” said Amber. After high school, Amber plans to get a college degree and become a teacher. John Sheagren, center John applied for the most sought-after EIL trip — to the Galapagos Islands and the Andes. “They discouraged me from applying, but I thought, ‘I’m going for the glory.’” John will spend four weeks traveling from Quito to the rain forest and over and across the Andes Mountains before hitting the ocean. “We will be studying ecology, environmental conservation, biology and biodiversity.” That’s in line with this MHS junior’s career goals — to major in environmental sciences or biology. — Sara Matthis
MMS STUDENT OF THE WEEK
MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 24, 2017 The Marathon Weekly is proud to partner with Marathon Middle School School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and MMS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Fin Pride.” What organizations and activities are you involved with at MMS/MHS and why are they important to you? I am involved with Keys to be the Change and the soccer team.
LOGAN D’ALESSANDRO EIGHTH GRADE
Who has been your biggest inspiration at MMS/MHS and why? I think Dr. Belotti is my biggest inspiration because she has always pushed me to do the absolute best in school. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I think math has best prepared me for life after high school because it is used for pretty much everything. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? I prefer Snapchat, but I don’t have a favorite filter. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? I think poverty is a big problem with the Keys. It is a beautiful place but also a very expensive place. I think we should try to create more affordable living spaces. What are your plans after high school? I plan on going to college to get a degree. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I want to travel when I get older and see many places … so, probably not. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… to try my best at everything I want to do. There is no second chance when it comes to living, so why waste the one you have?

Key Colony Inn
K
ey Colony Inn’s bartender Billy Blasingame operates like a well-oiled machine. He doesn’t waste a step, forget an order or fail to smile during the busy happy hour at the popular eatery on Key Colony Beach. Billy has been bartending at Key Colony Inn for 10 years, with a couple breaks in between, after moving from Memphis to the Keys. “A couple friends worked summers in my area and convinced me to come down for a winter, and I never left,” he said. “When they told me they had a job lined up for me in the Keys, I was there.” The signature drink at Key Colony Inn is, of course, the martini espresso. Loved by soccer moms everywhere, it contains healthy portions of alcohol that are balanced nicely with potent caffeine. It’s sweet, too! His favorite part about working at Key Colony Inn is the dedicated staff and hardworking owners. “It’s nice being somewhere where the owners are really busting their butts to make sure the restaurant is smoothly run,” he said. When he isn’t bartending, he’s helping the reef by plucking as many invasive lionfish out of the water as he can, and loves lobstering and bike riding. Key Colony Inn is located at 700 E. Ocean Drive in Key Colony Beach, just north of Marathon’s downtown. Turn off U.S.1 at the Sadowski Causeway.
MUSICAL RELEASE Songwriting duo debuts CD
T
he musical fruit of a project that “has taken years to develop, nurture and finalize” will be on display on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. in Key West. Dreamsmith, the songwriting duo of Larry Smith and Adrienne Z, will debut the CD “Dream Again” at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton St. The two met at the Pier House Resort Wine Galley, where Smith was the musical director and performed nightly. Adrienne, a singer songwriter originally from Boston, stopped by to see Smith showcase her friend, singer Michelle Dravis. Adrienne sat in on piano and impressed Larry by performing one of her original compositions. Smith invited her to write melodies and lyrics to some of his instrumentals, along with evolving pieces. The new album is a collection “examining life in today’s America,” Smith said. “How do you describe this music? It has elements of pop colliding with jazz overtones and even components of classical music.” Smith holds a degree in music education from Mansfield University, Mansfield, Pennsylvania. He has been in Key West for 25 years and said he has “played every establishment on the island,” though he said the Pier House position

would be his “most rewarding job.” Adrienne graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, with a degree in musical engineering as well as songwriting. She performs mostly solo – but also with the Adrienne Z Band and Jade Storm. She has produced six full-length CDs of her original music and can be heard throughout the Keys. The evening also will see the official release of “The Seidenberg Sessions,” a collection of Smith’s instrumental jazz compositions by the Larry Smith Quartet. The music of both CDs will be performed by Adrienne, Smith, Geoffrey Lowe, Skipper Kripitz, Christine Cordone, and a few surprise guests. Tickets and more information are at tskw.org.
