UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2017 GABRIEL SANCHEZ

A month removed from the transfer of power between two presidential administrations, there is a lot to talk about. Donald Trump’s presidency has brought about reforms in a lot of areas. Immigration policy, regulatory rules, foreign policy strategy, cabinet resignations, and even Skype in press questions − we’ve seen a lot in only a short time. While some have welcomed the new changes, others have expressed concern. In the interest of healthy political debate, the Weekly asked locals…

How do you think the new president is doing? Anthony Mitro, of the Post Card Inn, said, “He has a very weird tactic of exploiting fear in people, but it seems like he wants to get things done.”

“It’s someone who has Washington’s interest at heart, and at the end of the day I still have to pay taxes,” said Jack Whittle of Islamorada Dive Center.

Jeff Tharp, of Islamorada, said “He’s handling things interestingly.”

Maite Martin, of Mai D’cor in Islamorada, said “I’m all for a new president. Sometimes we need to make bold changes to make an impact in the direction we are going.”

“I think he’s doing an excellent job. He’s his own man. One of things I like about him the most, is that he surrounds himself with good people and then makes up his own mind,” said Rick Berry of Key Largo Rods. “He has potential to be the greatest president we’ve had since Reagan.”

GIGANTIC HEROES Meet the people behind flea market GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

T

he Upper Keys Rotary Club will host its 21st annual Gigantic Nautical Flea Market next weekend, Feb. 25-26. The flea market has long been an ideal place to find boating, fishing, diving, and other nautical gear and trinkets, at bargain prices. Free parking is available at Coral Shores High School, where a shuttle bus service will take them to the festivities. A $5 scholarship contribution from adults is requested. The event starts at 8 a.m. with a $5 all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast. From lifelong locals to the transient tourist, the Giant Nautical Flea Market has something for everyone. Behind the scenes, however, the Upper Keys Rotary Club has been toiling away to make this year’s flea market the best yet. Here are just four of the estimated 300 volunteers who make it happen. JILL MIRANDA BAKER Jill began her service as an Upper Keys Rotarian 10 years ago. The newly elected president is slated to begin her tenure on July 1. Baker has worked her way up through the ranks of the Upper Keys Rotary Club, serving in every officer position. Known for her laugh, Baker has devoted time to the nonprofit world for more than 20 years. “Anytime I can help out I do,” said Baker of her work as a Rotarian. “From the get-go you have to be

committed to volunteering to make a difference.” She’s given her time and effort coordinating Islamorada’s Fourth of July festivities, cooked breakfast for graduating students from Island Christian School, and is also the first executive director of the Florida Keys History & Discovery Foundation. Dubbed “the Queen” of the Giant Nautical Flea Market’s food services, Baker is coordinating a mouth-watering menu for attendees. What’s for breakfast? How about $5 all you can eat pancakes, eggs, hash browns, sausage links, and orange juice or coffee. For lunch? All-American hot dogs, BBQ, burgers, pork, conch, sausage with peppers and onions, snow cones, and popcorn. CLAIRE JOHNSON Claire has lived in the Keys for 20 years, with 11 of those involved with the Upper Keys Rotary. When she isn’t cruising in her 39-foot Fontaine Pajot catamaran, or ripping around on her Harley Sportster, Johnson lends her efforts to the Keys community. She’s previously volunteered as part of Project Graduation. Johnson has also been part of the crew that preps lunch for the village’s little league baseball teams, and helped keep the Fourth of July fireworks display going. The Giant Nautical Flea Market is the Upper Keys Rotary’s largest effort. It also happens to be Johnson’s favorite event. Why? “Because it makes the largest impact on helping the local

kids,” said Johnson. “Almost every dime raised goes to scholarships.” Johnson has taken on the role of chairperson for the flea market, which entails overseeing most operations. Johnson says she’s worked really hard to get the flea market to where it is. ROBERT STOBER The man, the myth, the Stober. Robert received his law degree from Miami Law School. Since moving to the Keys, he’s tailored his legal expertise to match his environment. Stober is one of the Upper Keys’ top legal minds on admiralty and maritime law, which make him more valuable aboard a vessel than a life jacket. Ten years a Rotarian, Stober is the flea market’s volunteer coordinator. Each year, roughly 300 volunteer roles are assigned, tracked and commissioned under the keen supervision of Stober. He’s got his duties down to a science, carrying around an enormous folding volunteer sheet, which resembles a large road map. If you’re not careful, he might put you to work. While most volunteers are Rotarians, their families, and friends, Stober also coordinates community service — a requirement for graduation — with students from Coral Shores High School and Island Christian School. Last year, Stober estimates the flea market raised more than $150,000 in scholarships for local students. NICOLE M. KRAUS Nicole moved to the Keys in 2010 – like most, for the warmer weather. This Ohio State Buckeye has a passion for marathon running. She’s raced across Chicago, Miami, Washington D.C., and Nashville, and next is eyeing the Big Sur Marathon in California. Kraus also keeps her cardio by keeping up with her three teenage boys. Four years a Rotarian, Kraus’ role in the Giant Nautical Flea Market is all things vendor. Kraus finds vendors, registers them, collects the dough, and situates the 270 vendor spots throughout the flea market; it’s an enormous undertaking. She also coordinates with roughly 30 non-profit organizations for the event, helping them expand their exposure.

ASK RECEIVES

Autism society grateful for fundraiser

O

n behalf of the Autism Society of the Keys (ASK) and the Board of Directors, I would like to say thank you to all those who helped us in any way to make the first ASK fundraising event a great success. It is only with many people working together for a common goal that an event such as this could happen. The mission of the Autism Society of the Keys is to improve the quality of life of children and families affected by autism. There are 24,000 new cases of autism diagnosed in the United States each year. There are hundreds in Monroe County and these children are the target of our efforts. Funds raised during this event and throughout the year help provide services including payments toward insurance deductibles, initial screening expenses and critical services, transportation costs to get children to and from doctor appointments, therapy and counseling services, books and DVDs for children and adults addressing autism issues such as “red flag” symptoms, iPads specifically programmed with activities for autistic children, monthly Keys-wide workshops promoting awareness and offering hope to families affected. The Autism Society of the Keys would like to personally thank the dozens of volunteers, sponsors and donors; speakers, Jimmy Morales and Cheryl Meads, friends, family and businesses who donated raffle items and their time to support this cause. The venue was the fabulous HGTV House in Islamorada. We thank each and every one of you and want you to know that we truly appreciate your part in bringing this event together and helping us promote autism awareness and the services we offer. I am honored and humbled to be a part of this organization and again, say thank you for your valuable assistance in making it happen. Sincerely, Jill Campbell President, Autism Society of the Keys

The science of making chocolate Key Largo Chocolates holds delicious classes KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

M

essed up Valentine’s Day? There is still hope for you in the form of locally made chocolates at Key Largo

Chocolates. When Kristie and Bob Thomas’ daughter’s nuptials were on the horizon, Kristie jumped on the opportunity to take a cake-making course for the occasion. “The cake was so beautiful, no one even wanted to cut into it,” said Bob in the back kitchen of Key Largo Chocolates while hosting a chocolate making workshop. Before that, he didn’t know a truffle from a ganache. Chef David Rodriguez just joined the team, too, with a background in corporate pastry-making for big names like Ritz Carlton, the White House, and Whole Foods. While Kristie explained where the cocoa is from and the differences in the percentages of chocolates, Chef David walked the class through

three perfectly tasty infused masterpieces — Praline Truffle, White Chocolate Tequila Rose, and Black Forest Truffle. Testing chocolates along the way, the students also brought home a box of goodies for later. The class went over basics, like ratios, as well as important tips, like not walking away from the milk. “Bubbles in the milk means it’s almost ready, but don’t let it boil,” said Chef David. Taking the temperature too high will separate the chocolate and milk, rather than crystalizing them together. Bob and Kristie like to host chocolate making classes with at least 12 people, and the cost is around $65 per person and includes wine. Just in case you need a post-Valentine’s Day treat, Key Largo Chocolates is located at 100470 Overseas Hwy. and has a ton of locally made chocolates for choosing. To inquire about chocolate making classes, call 305-453-6613.

Making chocolates in the Keys is not as easy as (Key Lime) pie. “Humidity is a huge factor,” said Bob Thomas.

Owner Kristie Thomas holds up a tin for forming truffles. They just finished an order for 5,000 chocolates for Ocean Reef. KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Keys Weekly

FEEL GOOD TIDBIT: On Thursdays, Bob Thomas picks up food for Burton Memorial Food Bank from Publix and Winn Dixie, because his refrigerated truck is certified to carry the cold food to the food bank. “If Bob didn’t do that, it would probably just get thrown away,” said Kate Bauer-Jones of United Way of the Florida Keys, who was at the chocolate making class. “They are such good people.”

Chef David Rodriguez shows a class full of chocolate makers the ratios of chocolate to heavy cream and how not to boil the milk.

Concert of originals Guitarists contrast string count, share ability GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

T

ake two musicians, 18 strings and a variety of musical styles and you get two hours of a one-of-a-kind guitar concert. The Keys Jewish Community Center presents the “18 Strings & Attitude” concert on Wednesday, Feb. 22 from 8 to 10 p.m. The concert will feature guitarists David Feder and Sam Weis. Feder has spent 48 years mastering his craft, and playing music is still what he prefers to do with his days. As a member of the center, Feder said he’s looking forward to filling the acoustically welcoming walls of the synagogue with music. He’s also eager to play alongside Weis. “When they asked me to play with Sam, I jumped at the chance. I think our music is contrasting enough for the audience to really

enjoy it and have fun,” said Feder. Feder draws from songs he’s developed over the years that give off a “Brazilian-flamenco-Latin” feel. He typically plays contemporary finger-picking originals, most of them improvisational. Each performance is different. Feder said his performances rely on the energy of the audience for feedback. “The flavor, tempo, and note choice all culminate into a group experience,” said Feder. “I try to make it a synergistic process, inviting the audience to become active participants in something that will never happen again.” Weis took up the 12-string guitar at 15, though she previously began playing double neck pedal steel guitar and standard six-string guitar at age 10. As a kid, she accompanied local bands at bars. Later, she’d adventure into rocking with hard rock bands in Chicago and Seattle. Her playing evolved, however, and she returned to focusing solely on those trusty 12 strings.

“I love the instrument because it’s very orchestral. There is so much sound bouncing around on it, with its big bass sounds and metallic chimes,” said Weis. “It’s a really exciting instrument.” She says there are plenty of opportunities on the fret board to make different sounds. Weis also uses non-standard tunings in her music, alternating among four or so tunings. Weis recorded her first album, on vinyl, in 1984. She’s completed five albums since. The Keys Jewish Community Center is at MM 93.1, oceanside. Contact Linda at 305-396-7000 or linda@lindakaplan.com to reserve a spot; entry is $25 at the door.

The ability to make a wellconstructed passion fruit mojito is what makes bartender Jim Horan THE man.

Bumby’s Raw Bar Bumby’s refreshing new passion fruit mojito is something special. Made with Bacardi white rum, passion fruit puree, muddled fresh mint, simple syrup, shaken, and topped with club soda, this invigorating libation is beachfriendly. “It’s really refreshing and fruity, and brings the rum taste front and center,” said 20-year bartending veteran Jim Horan. After hitting life’s reset button, Horan has now spent a decade in the Keys. Also a Mariners Hospital spin class instructor, he introduces himself as “Gym Nasium.” Horan also owns Keys Baby Rentals, which rents baby furniture. “We don’t rent babies, but we would lease a baby under the right terms,” chuckled Horan. “Yeah, no, we don’t rent babies.” Horan’s baby, a little Chihuahua terrier mix named Roxy, keeps him on his toes. It’s been good practice, seeing as the betrothed Horan is expecting his family to grow. Until then, he unwinds via vino and paperback. His choice of libation as he reads is an aged cabernet or pinot grigio. Visit Bumby’s at 82779 Overseas Highway Islamorada, and pick Horan’s brain over a Passion Fruit Mojito. You might just learn something, or you can always lease your next baby.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2017

GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

C

apt. Steve Friedman’s summers playing in the waters near his grandparents’ home in central Illinois sparked a curiosity for fish that has yet to end. As his angling ability evolved, the urge to fish as much as possible grew. He’s chased fish as far west as New Mexico, where Friedman spent days on the banks of the San Juan River pursuing rainbow and brown trout. He’s fished the chilly waters of Lake Michigan, just a stone’s throw from his hometown of Chicago. His summers were spent casting his line throughout Florida, which has nurtured his love of saltwater fishing. Once he entered the world of guiding, he conquered the white waters of Eagle and Roaring Fork Rivers of Colorado. Seventeen years ago, Friedman, wife Kristine and two children, Benjamin and Sidney, made the decision to permanently call South Florida home and guide in the Florida Keys. Now, his home is being threatened by forces outside his control, and he’s calling upon the guide community to band together to save our waters. How has the seagrass die off affected your work as a guide? It has made thousands of acres of once-fruitful fishing grounds unproductive. It has lowered numbers of fish. It has raised questions and concerns in some clients, about if it's worth it to come fish or not. What is one thing local fishermen can do today to aid in the restoration of Florida Bay? Talk about it. Remove the taboo of acknowledging the crisis. Give a positive course of action: call your state reps. Show up at meetings. Be a relentless advocate. Where do you see the future of backcountry fishing headed in the next decade? It's perilous. There has been legislation in place for decades which is supposed to improve the situation (namely CEPP and CERP). New initiatives in SB10 and HB761 call for new measures and will be voted on in weeks. Their passage or failure will determine whether the Bay will prosper or perish.

15 QUESTIONS

Why do you believe there is a perceived apathy from the fishing guide community toward the crisis in the bay? Denial. It's scary to think our job, our passion is in jeopardy. If clients get wind of the dying seagrass, the polluted coastal waters, the dwindling fish counts, they'll go elsewhere. What would you say to someone who believes that Florida Bay can recover without the aid of locals pressuring state legislators? That's a passive naive view. When does profit ever back down willingly for “the greater good?” If left to duke it out alone, which do you think will triumph: The sugar industry and politicians, or seagrass and heron? The only leverage we have is our unified voice. If someone wanted to be more involved in Florida Bay Forever, where would you direct them? To Elizabeth Jolin @ www.floridabayforever.org What would you say to offshore fishermen who believe the Florida Bay crisis doesn’t affect them? Does a bad heart affect the rest of your body? If the nursery of our fishery — the Bay — is coding on the table, the offshore limbs are doomed as well. Not to mention that tourism disappears, and there go all the charters — Bay or Oceanside. What changes to local fishing practices can guides implement to aid in the recovery of the bay? Sound fishing principles are as crucial as ever: catch and release is recommended. If you kill a fish, only take what you will eat tonight. Dispose of fishing line properly. Stay off the flats unless you know what you're doing. What is one misconception about the life of a fisherman? That it's an easy life. That we're slackers. We may fish you for eight hours but we work 12-hour days. We're up at dawn and barely make it home to our families for dinner.

CAPT. STEVE FRIEDMAN

What was the last book you read? I just finished “Testimony” by Robbie Robertson and am now into Bruce Springsteen's biography “Born to Run.” Who has been an inspiration to you? Capt. Steve Huff has been a beacon of inspiration for me in the guiding game. What is one thing we can teach the next generation about protecting the environment? Your choices have a ripple effect. They're not isolated. They are amplified over time. Choose wisely. Be the change you want to see in the world. When you’re not fishing, where can you be found? Watching fishing shows. Organizing tackle and handling boat maintenance. Working on house projects. Fulfilling my responsibilities as commodore of the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association. At the baseball field watching my son play. Helping my daughter with homework. Hanging with the wife and kids. How did you end up as a fishing guide in the Florida Keys? I tried the corporate scene in a law firm in Chicago, where I grew up. It was what I thought I “should” do, but it was one of the most miserable times in my life. In 2000, I moved to Islamorada. Sandy Moret was good enough to hire me at his Florida Keys Outfitters shop, and from there I began building my guiding career. Describe the ideal first mate. Reliable and willing. This is not a job for a barstool sailor. Be a person of your word, be humble enough to learn and wise enough to follow your heart.

Happy birthday, Garden Club Debbie Leonard, left, Debbie Sue Jonas, Donna Nussenblatt, and Mary Leahy show off their garb for the Garden Club of the Upper Keys’ 65th annual birthday bash. The event, celebrating the 1952 founding of the club, is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. at the Francis Tracy Garden Center. Admission is free. GABRIEL SANCHEZ/Keys Weekly

BRIEFLY Discussion centers on Keys in Film The History of Filming in the Keys will be presented by Syndicated Film Critic Shirrel Rhoades as part of the Keys History & Discovery Center Presents lecture series. The doors open at 5 p.m. for the presentation on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada. Rhoades, a writer, publisher, professor and filmmaker, will discuss the history of filmmaking in the Keys, which had its first start in 1898 with Thomas Edison. During the Golden Age of Hollywood, “Rose Tattoo” and “Beneath the 12-Mile Reef” were filmed in the Keys. In following years, films about World War II, such as “Operation Petticoat” and “PT 109,” recreated scenes from other tropical locales. Mainstream movies filmed in the Keys in later years include “Cuba Crossing,” “Running Scared,” “License to Kill,” “True Lies” and “2 Fast 2 Furious,” and the Netflix series, “Bloodline.” Rhoades will discuss the benefits of filming in the Florida Keys and how these films impacted the recognition of the Keys as a tourist attraction. Members of the Keys History & Discovery Center are free. Cost for non-members is $25 and includes admission to the exhibit as well as light appetizers. A cash bar will be available. Reservations are suggested and can be made at 305-922-2237 or info@keysdiscovery.com. The Discovery Center is in Islamorada, MM 82.

Satellites landing SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

T

he Keys Weekly had the opportunity to interview two of the four members of the Georgia Satellites in advance of their arrival this weekend in Marathon. Unfortunately, very little of it was suitable for print in a family newspaper, despite the raucously funny tone of the interview. Let’s put it this way — the band thinks the tour/music is incredibly important but not at all serious. “I just go where they tell me. I show up at the airport and they tell me where I’m going,” laughed lead guitarist and lead vocalist Rick Richards. He’s an original member of the band that got its start in the ’80s. It wasn’t until 1986, though, that the band released its biggest hit — “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” — written by Dan Baird. (Only Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” kept it from the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100). “Listen, we were an Atlanta bar band. We bastardized some country songs and put some rock in there. And we were also heavily influenced by the British Invasion. We didn’t cater to the trends or the demographics. And then all of a sudden we just had this song that people liked,” Richards said. “We had that hit song and we were just happy to be there.” The band opened for the likes of Tom Petty, David Bowie, Hank Williams Jr., Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger and REO Speedwagon. “The caliber of the women and the caliber of the hotel were definitely upgraded,” he said. The other hits on the self-titled album that propelled them to fame in 1986 were “Battleship Chains” (Terry Anderson) and “Every Picture Tells a Story” (Rod Stewart). In 1988 they recorded a version of “Hippy Hippy Shake” featured in the movie “Cocktail” starring Tom Cruise. Soon after, Baird left the band for a solo career and the musicians went into a bit of a hiatus before reforming in 1993. The current lineup features Richards, and newcomers Fred McNeal (vocals, rhythm guitar), Bruce Smith (bass) and Todd Johnston (drums). In all, the Georgia Satellites has four studio albums; the latest — “Shaken Not Stirred” — was released in 1997.

Don’t hand me no lines and keep your hands to yourself

When he isn’t playing with the Georgia Satellites, Richards told the Weekly, he’s a gynecologist. “He’s telling the truth,” said drummer Todd Johnston. “No, he’s not.” In reality, Richards collaborates quite a bit with Guns n' Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin in his band, Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds. They toured in the 1990s and have recorded seven albums. “We just finished something a couple of months ago. It’s on iTunes or YouTube or some sh@! like that,” he said. (We’re guessing here — but in 2016, they performed together on the “Walk’N Song;” possibly that’s what he’s referring to.) Richards promises the band will play a rockin’ set list. Yes, they will play all the favorites. Yes, they’ll play a couple of oddballs. (“I really like the Beatles’ ‘I Am the Walrus.’”)

SCHEDULE-ISH 11:30 a.m. — gates open 11:45 a.m. — Opening Ceremonies (American Legion Color Guard with special guest Bill Hoebee from the “Hoebee in the Afternoon Experiment”) Noon-12:45 p.m. — Shastina 1:15-2:15 p.m. — Fiddle Rock 3:15-4:30 p.m. — Georgia Satellites 5:15-6:15 p.m. — Above The Skyline 6:45-8:15 p.m. — Lazy Bonez 9-10:30 p.m. — Molly Hatchet

Did you know? Drummer Todd Johnston’s day gig is as an investor with a Silicon Valley startup that is investigating genetic testing for food supply. He also speaks Spanish and has two children (one planned, one not). “Playing music means I get to enjoy my life and not become a fuddy duddy.”

Bring a chair As with other events at Marathon Community Park’s amphitheater, the public is encouraged to bring some lawn chairs or a blanket. No coolers. Beer will be for sale at the event, and all proceeds benefit the projects of the local chapter of American Legion including scholarships, donations to charity, and Project Vet Relief.

he Boy Scouts of America Sea Base played host to this year’s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Workshop. Some 119 youth leaders came together to learn and play alongside one another, and represented Monroe, Broward, and Miami-Dade county, as well as Grand Bahama Island. Every Rotary club of Rotary District 6990 was encouraged to sponsor three students. Monroe County sponsored 15 students. This year’s workshop theme was “peace through leadership.” The workshop aims to create an atmosphere of democratic living, promote insight and understanding for intelligent leadership, and encourage interpersonal skills rooted in values. “The exercises they do teach them how to be better leaders, problemsolve, conflict resolution, time management … everything that you need to be a good leader,” said District Governor Ellen Blasi, of Rotary Club of Key Biscayne. “They start off doing an exercise that’s competitive, but as they get into it, they realize it’s more about cooperation than competition.” The three-day program emphasizes personal responsibility, integrity, goal-setting, and teamwork. —Weekly Staff report

CSHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2017

19

The Upper Keys Weekly is proud to partner with Coral Shores High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and CSHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Cane Pride.” What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? Nothing right now, but I am applying for the National Honor Society. Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why? My biggest inspiration at Coral Shores has been Mrs. Rife because she helps and guides me to the the right path. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? ESOL because it’s teaching me how to speak English and how to move forward in life. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? Snapchat. The flower crown. What are your plans after high school? Go to college and pursue the medical field. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? No because I want to go to a college somewhere out of town. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… how to make the closest of friends.
