Tourists say the darnedest things (well, that’s the nice way to put it). Yes, we locals love, value and appreciate the many who come to eat our eats and buy our goods but some of the questions, phew, it’s kind of hard not to have a good laugh. Yes, we really do only have one sunset a night, honest, and weirdly enough it sets in the west (I know, crazy). So in an effort to let off a little tourist steam, we asked locals to finish this sentence:

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

KEY WEST WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2017

Faith in community P 20 Questions with Principal Robert Wright of The Basilica School

rincipal Robert Wright of St. Mary’s Basilica School learned early in life that the measure of a man can be his faith. When Wright left home at 16, he experienced firsthand that “God will provide if you trust.” Observing the peace and stability religion provides, Wright has dedicated his life to helping administer the value of faith. Putting himself through school, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and a master’s from the University of Dayton. He then started working as a government and history teacher in Tallahassee, wanting to be in “a position to give back.” Eventually, his wife, Jessica, a sixth generation Conch, led him home to Key West to raise their five children and be surrounded by family and community, which is in no short supply at the Basilica School.

With a thoughtful demeanor, Wright is full of offhand wit, inherent strength and a keen sensitivity to his community. Now, school enrollment is up 40 percent and growing since he arrived in the fall of 2013. Wright appreciates that Key West is a “community that takes care of each other,” and notes his biggest problem is making room for everybody. Wright’s mission is to shape kids with character, respect and integrity – values from the gospel. Whether he is returning 100 emails a day, sharing inside jokes with his students, or throwing impromptu Christian hip hop dance parties at home, the joy his faith has brought him is obvious, and obviously catching.

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

1. Full Name? Robert Wright. 2. Worst nickname? Robby. 3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life, why? Tupac, or did he ever die? No seriously, Saint Pope John Paul II — a rebel with a cause. 4. What question do you hate to answer? How old are you? (Note: wouldn’t tell me either.) 5. Name one thing you would want to teach the world tomorrow? Forgiveness. Because anything contrary to mercy destroys joy. I tell my students all the time, “The lord calls us to forgive. He doesn’t say we have to share Starbucks together but we have to forgive.” 6. Who’s your favorite TV show or movie about education? “Stand and Deliver.” Or else “Waiting for Superman.” They’re different but both moving. 7. If you won the lottery, what extravagant thing would you do? Build a gymnasium. My school needs one. 8. Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Leonardo, the turtle, from “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” 9. What is your nerdiest passion? Dancing.

10. If you could take three items on a deserted island, what? why? My bible, beer and BBQ. Why? It just seems right. I guess I should say something practical like a knife, a compass and flint. 11. If invisible, what would you do in Key West? Grocery shop. It’s tough making it through an aisle without “talking school” with someone. Buying milk can take 30 minutes. 12. What was your first thought this morning? “Ugh.” Is that a thought? 13. Favorite guilty pleasure? Cereal at bedtime. 14. What dream job would you have (if not a principal)? Disney World, maybe a stuntman; I would do it for the discount. 15. If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? Bike lanes. 16. You are sitting at a diner counter eating. Who would you want to walk in and sit next to you? My wife.

Finish these sentences.. 17. My family would describe me as … ”pretty cool.” 18. My autobiography would be titled … “Reckless and Rosaries.” 19. I’d like to teach the world to … pray. 20. When I go, I will go … when He calls.

f you've ventured out to the many music venues in Key West lately, chances are you've heard James Whitehead. James grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, where he can remember his parents and siblings always playing music on the record player. He bought his first guitar from a friend when he was 15 years old and taught himself a few chords and learned how to play his first song, "Stairway to Heaven." Eventually he was able to upgrade to a fake Stratocaster and played in bands in high school and college. After graduating from the University of Dayton, James landed a marketing job for a court recording software company in Cleveland. That company was headquartered in Florida and after a few years he made the move to Fort Lauderdale. James had a friend who was working in Key West who was able to offer him a place to stay, and James jumped at the opportunity. He moved to Key West and worked as a bartender

at Sloppy Joe's for 10 years. During that time he was able to sit in with fellow musician Zack Seamiller. Zack and James played classic rock and a lot of Zack's original tunes. Eventually James got another day job, this time doing marketing with Get Grounded Footwear. About a year ago Get Grounded folded, and James found himself in a position to be able to play music fulltime. He now plays around town six days a week at spots like Blue McCaw, Lazy Gecko, Viva Saloon, Dante's and The Galleon. For now James is happy to be playing music for a living while raising his daughter in Key West. He is also working on putting together enough original material for an album. He wrote "Don't Treat Me Like a Fool" which was performed live at one of the soldout Ramble concerts at the Key West Theater. James also hopes to continue collaborating with friends Nick Norman and Derek Reay.

Abbondanza Italian Restaurant “It’s a great classic with an Italian twist,” said Abbondanza bartender Isabella. “A splash of Averna Italian liqueur added to the traditional ingredients like muddled cherry and oranges makes a great Old Fashioned.” Hailing from Colombia, she’s been making drinks in Key West for the past five years, and joined the Italian restaurant’s team four months ago. “I really love the customers here,” she said on Valentine’s Day, gesturing to the folks enjoying the quaint tavern-like atmosphere. “Most are locals and so nice to hang out with while they are dining.” Isabella suggested the Veal Marsala as a favorite to pair with the old fashioned. Other favorites are the Abbondanza Scampi, and Pescatore dishes. When she isn’t bartending, she’s out on the water. “It’s the best part of living here,” she said. “I love to dive and snorkel and spend time on a boat.” Abbondanza is located at 1208 Simonton St., Key West. The menu was recently updated with new dishes and drinks.

resh yellowtail or frozen tilapia? Key West Pink or farm raised shrimp from China? It can be easier, and cheaper, for restaurants to bait and switch (forgive the pun) a seafood dinner. Menus up and down the Keys tout local cuisine with marketing words such as “local” or “fresh” next to their lobster tails and hogfish sandwiches, but how do consumers know if the fish was really caught in our waters? There is one surefire way to find out. Just ask: Who caught it? This is the premise of the popular threeyear-old “Know Your Fisherman” campaign in the Keys. Paul Menta, Tony Osbourn and Chris Holland, owners of Three Hands Fish Market of Key West, created the campaign as the ultimate “ocean to plate” program to combat the common, national problem of seafood fraud. “Back in the ’70s in Key West, people went down to the docks, bought fish directly from the boat and took it home,” said Captain and Chef Menta. “We are just getting back to that idea. This isn’t about hurting Keys restaurant business, but we are trying to help the next

Front and back of a ‘Know Your Fisherman’ baseball card.

generation of Keys commercial fishermen keep their family businesses.” The Keys’ commercial fishing industry is indispensable to the community and local economy, but is not sustainable when competing with cheaper fish from around the world. Menta hopes the program will grow with more local fish retailers adopting this business model and more restaurants joining the campaign. “We are a seafood destination, so let the consumer be the police, let them ask who caught it and let them make a choice where to eat,” he said. Menta stresses that fish immediately begin to deteriorate once filleted and put on ice. In order to truly get the “freshest” fish, catch and delivery to restaurants is the way to go. Ultimately, Menta would like to see “Fresh Fish from Florida” attached to every catch, similar to the “Black Angus Beef” label popular in supermarkets. There are 41 popular Key West restaurants participating in the campaign. When a diner asks “Who Caught it?”, servers can offer proof in the form of a baseball card naming one of 12 local fishermen who caught the fish of the day. Mayor Craig Cates has jumped at the idea, naming Feb. 22 as the official “Know Your Fisherman” Day. “This is just the first of many steps Key West will take,” said Cates, “to ensure that our island proudly and confidently remains a world capital of fresh and sustainable seafood.”

MIA’S BIG HEART AND BIG BIRTHDAY

Heart Month is personal to this family KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

“W

hen you are sitting in the hospital with a sick child, it’s a level playing field,” said Wendy Wilson from the E Dock at Faro Blanco Marina on the family’s 32-foot Bayliner. “It doesn’t matter what your social level is, or what kind of car you drive. It’s kind of like boating. We are all rooting for each other, all here to help each other out.” Wendy, Bobby and their four dynamic daughters, Nina, AnnaMay, Ella, and Mia are on the “loop” – an almost yearlong trip from Ohio down the Mississippi, around Key West and back up the East Coast. And they are doing it with youngest daughter Mia, a happy, bright ball of sunshine who is battling a congenital heart defect. Mia takes about 40 medicines a day. The chatty preschooler loves to draw and paint, talk on the phone and take selfies. She wants to know your name, who you’re married to, what everyone’s job is, and if she can wear your sun-

glasses and watch. She can’t swallow food, so she’s hooked up to a feeding machine almost 24-7. But, that doesn’t keep her from swimming in the pool with her sisters, or riding on the fly bridge with her dad out to Sombrero Reef. Mia was born flat-lined on Feb. 19, six years ago. Doctors prepared Wendy and Bobby to expect five hours, then five days, and now she’s about to celebrate her sixth birthday. Her sister, Nina, was in middle school at the time and remembers the kids at school worrying about what kind of shoes they were wearing. “It all just seemed so minuscule when a little baby is fighting for her life,” she said. The next five years were spent in basic quarantine for little Mia, with three open heart surgeries, and issues

with her eyes, ears, stomach, and even a broken leg. Bobby and Wendy always said they wanted to do the loop when they retired, after watching friends complete the journey in the pre-social media days via emails and dial-up AOL. Those same friends sold them their boat, and with zero big-boat experience, they packed up the family, and all of Mia’s medicine, and got underway. One hundred eighty-three days later, they found themselves in Marathon. “We have to stay in marinas and close by medical care, just in case,” said Wendy, pointing out the converted shower where they store all of Mia’s medicine. “We also need a real shower.” In Marathon, they have already been on a tour of the Coast Guard

Station, the Turtle Hospital and the girls’ favorite, Aquarium Encounters. Mia’s favorite was the stingrays; she likened them to dogs. AnnaMay’s was the sea slug in the touch tank, and Ella loved the angelfish. The girls are looking forward to seeing the Butterfly Conservatory in Key West, if Bobby can find a spot at The Galleon to dock. While in port, family in Ohio send Mia’s medical supplies down via FedEx and there is constant communication with her doctors via a wifi hotspot, the same hotspot Bobby uses to work as an electronic processor. And, there are harbor hosts – complete strangers – who accept packages for them, or give them rides to the grocery store. “The deliveries aren’t little either. It’s usually like eight huge boxes that fill the entire cabin,” said Wendy. “We are waiting on Mia’s heart meds today. It’s a little nerve-wracking.” But, while one daughter paints her toenails on the dock, and two are paddleboarding and kayaking in the harbor, and little Mia catches rides on the golf cart with her new friend Celina, Bobby and Wendy said they wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s great to be together as a family,” they said. “We had to do this now; we don’t know when we’d get another chance.” To follow the family, Mia is on a Facebook group at “Mias Big Heart,” and the family’s loop adventures can be found at “Wilsons on the Water.” They plan on being finished with the loop by mid-June, when Mia has to be back home for more tests and surgeries. Since February is Heart Month, the family wants to raise awareness for future research. “If we can do something now that will help someone 20 years from now in our same shoes, then we have to,” said Wendy. “If someone five years before Mia hadn’t tried something new, we may not have her here with us today.”

MIA’S BIG BIRTHDAY PARTY The Faro Blanco crew has come to love Mia and her family. They are throwing Mia a birthday party, and the family a bon voyage party on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. in the Captain’s Room at Lighthouse Grill, and then probably moving poolside, since Mia loves the pool. *Remember Mia has a very susceptible immune system, so please don’t bring unnecessary germs.

KEY WEST WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2017 The Key West Weekly is proud to partner with Key West High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and KWHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Conch Pride” and congratulate all of the outstanding students of the week. What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I am currently involved in Keys To Be The Change, Project Unify, and Beta Club.

11PM

What is your favorite social medium and why? Who do you follow? Facebook, because it allows me to keep in contact with my family and friends who don’t live here. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? One of the biggest challenges in the Keys is the amount of trash getting in the ocean. I would do more cleanups, more frequently. What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend either UCF, UF, or NSU and get my Ph.D. in accounting. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? No, because although I think Key West is a beautiful community, the accounting opportunities will be better in Orlando. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… how close a small community is.

SONGS OF THE SIREN

Rorey Carroll comes back to Coast

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

R

orey Carroll is a lyrical modern siren. She is the mesmerizing image and sound of legendary guitarstrumming, long-haired Joni Mitchell, combined with the bandit ways and humor of actress Mary Louise Parker. Carroll’s musical evolution reads like a Kerouac novel. She has ridden the rusty rails and seen the other side of the law. For the 32-year-old Nashville singer/songwriter, the result is musical poetry. Rolling Stone included Carroll’s second album, “Love is an Outlaw,” as one of “15 Great Country and Americana Albums You Didn't Hear in 2016.” And now is your chance. Carroll will be returning for an encore performance at Coast on Stock Island on Saturday, Feb. 25 highlighting her latest album. “When Rorey took the stage in November the crowd fell in love with her at first sight,” said Coast owner Billy Kearins. “She really captured the audience from the opening chord,” and he immediately invited her back. “My sound is Americana folk with some rock ’n’ roll infusion,” said Carroll. “I’ve been a bit of a gypsy so I like drifter lyrics.” Leaving her middle-class Chicago roots by age

ROREY CARROLL Live at Coast Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. Tickets available at coastprojects.com

19, Carroll hiked the Appalachian Trail alone, jumped box cars around the U.S., got busted for transporting marijuana and played music everywhere she could. From the streets to dive bars, Carroll picked up a guitar and learned folk and bluegrass music from anyone and everyone. Her mentor is the famed Todd Snider, whom she played with at Coast. Carroll writes her own music and arrangements, which are both haunting and humorous. She often draws from the same sense of love, loss and irony young poets often lament. With a soothing and seductive voice, she weaves songs like her latest hit “Love is an Outlaw” capturing love’s irony: “It doesn’t keep quiet, it doesn’t know how to act, It is as awkward as a teenage boy who just came in his pants, I hope it lasts with you, I do I hope we pass on through the blues…” It’s easy to fall in love with her voice, and better still her stories. As Carroll sings, “You can’t give it up for anyone, I am holding out for loveI only want it if it’s good, and just not good enough…” Not a concert to be missed.

T

he Custom House Museum in Old Town Key West was the setting for a flash-mob style Kiss-In event, hosted by Key West Art & Historical Society on Valentine’s Day evening. Hundreds of couples – including a coconut-wielding man kissing a “Cast Away”-inspired “Wilson” volleyball and a woman puckering up with a toy dolphin – locked lips at exactly 6 p.m. next to artist Seward Johnson’s “Embracing Peace” sculpture, in a photo op moment that has been picked up by international media. “When there seems to be so much anger and separation in the world, our message is that Key West embraces peace,” said Shawn Cowles of the historical society. Johnson’s 25-foot-tall “Embracing Peace” sculpture was inspired by photographs of a sailor and nurse in Times Square, New York, celebrating the end of World War II – an image that has been called the most famous kiss in American history. — Contributed

Five homes that represent different eras of the history of Key West are on this 2.2-mile walking tour, sponsored by the Old Island Restoration Foundation. Homes range from an 1870s Bahamian-style “great house” to a 21st-century construction that replicates the down-home appearance of its antique neighbors. Tour can be split into two days. Tickets $30 to $35, at www.oirf.org or 305-294-9501; on day of tour, at the five locations, cash or check only.

Molly Hatchet, born in Jacksonville in the late 1970s, headlines this all-day Saturday music festival, joined by the Georgia Satellites, Lazy Bonez (a Southern rock tribute band), Fiddle Rock, Above the Skyline, and Shastina. In addition, about 80 vendors will have booths set up on site. Tickets $25 in advance (keystix.com), $35 at the gate. Festival is being put on by the local chapter of the American Legion Riders.

Alison Lurie, a novelist, memoirist and writer of non-fiction, won the Pulitzer for fiction for “Foreign Affairs” in 1984. Her work has been compared with that of Henry James, Edith Wharton and Jane Austen. Of the comparisons, Lurie said, “I think it's very nice but a little over the top. One thing I do have in common with these writers is that I’m interested in family relationships and childhood and memory.” Doors open on Monday at 5:30 p.m. Free admission.

Hear a presentation Wednesday on Sandy Cornish’s Civil War Garden, followed by champagne and samplings of tropical fruits harvested from Grimal Grove. Cornish’s freedom papers were destroyed in a fire and he subsequently was tracked by slave hunters who tried to capture him. To render himself useless as a slave, he maimed himself, and eventually ended up in the Keys, where he had the first successful farm — mentioned in an 1850s horticultural magazine. ‘Avenue Q’ comes to Waterfront Playhouse

W

hen artistic director Danny Weathers scheduled the Broadway hit musical, “Avenue Q,” as part of the Waterfront Playhouse’s 2017-18 season, he knew one of the big challenges with the show would be the puppets. Part of that challenge would be getting the actors familiar with puppeteering in a short time. As director, Weathers had to find someone who was versed in puppeteering, as well as the puppet specifics for the adultthemed “Avenue Q.” Enter the Studios of Key West and its board member Stephen Kitsakos. Back in the spring, just after announcing the season, Weathers learned that Kitsakos’ group was planning to schedule an adult puppeteering class with Jason Jacoby, a cast member in the current New York company. Jacoby has been with the Broadway and Off Broadway production of “Avenue Q” for more than four years. In addition to performing, he’s the puppet captain, responsible for putting new cast members into the show, as well as keeping the puppeteering running smoothly. “Avenue Q” is the story of recent college graduate Princeton, who

moves to the big city but can only afford to live way out on the eponymous street. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Lucy (the slut), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the pervert), superintendent Gary Coleman (yes, that Gary Coleman) and others. Together, they struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. The play won the 2004 Tony “triple crown,” for best musical, best score and best book. Jacoby flew in to Key West in late January. His goal was to transform the Waterfront cast of “Avenue Q” into puppet masters in two days – or at least lay the groundwork. He taught the actors the techniques of synchronizing dialogue, how to hold the puppet onstage, puppet eye contact, sexual situations (this is an adult puppet show) and how to express a puppet’s “emotions.” “Avenue Q” has music and lyrics by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez with the book by Jeff Whitty. It is not a children’s show. It’s rated R for audiences 16 and up, due to adult language, themes and full frontal puppet nudity and sex. —Contributed

“Avenue Q,” March 2-25, 8 p.m., Waterfront Playhouse, 310 Wall St. Lowpriced previews on Feb. 28 and March 1. More information, tickets at waterfrontplayhouse. org, or at 305-294-5015.

Engage with Nature and Creativity During the Second Annual Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Outdoor Fest

F

or most, nature’s capacity to instill awe goes without saying. Sea turtles nesting, dolphins frolicking, birds wading and migrating— wildlife encounters like these can leave us inspired and renewed. But a growing body of research is beginning to show that contact with nature has many proven physical, mental, and emotional benefits too, with “Nature Therapy” sometimes even prescribed as a supplemental Rx treatment and approach to well-being. Here in the Keys, with over 400,000 acres of land and shallow waters that make up the subtropical Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges, there are many opportunities to tap into nature’s therapeutic bounty. Saturday, March 11 through Saturday, March 18 the Refuge Complex and their Friends group FAVOR (Friends And Volunteers Of Refuges) hosts the second annual Outdoor Fest with a full week of family-friendly, mostly free outdoor adventures and hands-on activities— events that will not only boost your mood, but enhance your connection to your creativity while you explore that natural world around you. “Our lives are so busy and hectic now-a-days,” says FKNWRC Deputy Project Leader Christine Ogura. “Nature transports me to another place that slows me down and gives me time to take a breath, reflect and appreciate. Art-making does the same thing. One inspires the other.”

Ogura will lead a “Fun with Wildlife Origami” workshop during the Outdoor Fest on Thursday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the National Key Deer Refuge visitor center. The workshop is one of several “Nature Therapy” type of workshops for children and adults offered that week, in addition to several other events, activities, lectures, and field trips. Other “Nature Therapy” type workshops include: Intro to Nature Sketchbook Journaling on Wednesday, March 15 from 9 to 11 a.m., a Sunrise Photography Walk on Wednesday, March 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., a Kids Photography Workshop on Thursday, March 16 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and a Photography Contest with a special pop-up photography exhibit and reception at the National Key Deer Refuge visitor center on Wednesday, March 15. All of the above workshops are free and open to everyone regardless of artistic abilities, and advanced registration is required, either online or at the Visitor Center. “No experience is needed,” says Loretta Gallant, who will lead the Intro to Nature Sketchbook Journaling workshop. “Just a desire to discover the joy of expressing yourself through art in nature.” Gallant looks forward to sharing what she says is “a new way to deepen the connection to the natural world” with others. Her offering is a perfect example of how to tap into Nature Therapy, which is based on the idea that people are connected to and impacted by the natural environment. The Outdoor Fest is brought to you in part by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. new script by a local playwright – revised after 10 years of life intervened – will get its debut in Key

West. Following a long tradition of supporting original scripts, Fringe Theater Key West opens “Cock Talk,” a play written by Key West local Wayne Keller. It runs Feb. 2226 at 7 p.m. in the Side Bar, at 504 Angela St. in the Aqua Night Club complex. “The script literally showed up on my doorstep within days of the announcement that I would be the new artistic director for Fringe. I was intrigued by the title (of course) and liked the premise,” said Rebecca Tomlinson, who is serving as the show’s chaperone. “So I called the playwright and said we’d be open to producing it if he’d be open to developing the script further.” The show is a show within a show. Three friends get together to present what they see as a male version of “The Vagina Monologues.” But the show doesn’t go according to plan. “I wrote the play ten years ago and moved on with my life which included getting married and raising kids,” Keller said. “So when Rebecca asked me to reconsider where the play goes and the jour-

ney the men take, it made sense. My perspective on life has changed in the last ten years. Now the play reflects that.” The play is (very) adult and features Chad Newman, Don Beardon, John Reynolds and Pony Charvet. “The show has adult themes. And it pushes the envelope,” said Charvet, who is also the play’s director. “But it also explores what it’s like to be a guy just trying to figure things out.” Since this is the first staging of a new script, Fringe is planning to host an audience talk-back after each performance. — Contributed
