Valentine’s Day is…

“Valentine’s Day is … a time to spend with family and have lots of love,” said Erin Kenny. That’s a very good thing to remember always.

“Valentine’s Day is … the day you get stuff for another family that has lots of hearts on it,” said Tessa Dickstein, who has seems to have a very big heart herself.

Valentine’s Day gets a bad rap. Called a Hallmark holiday or a great rose massacre, V-Day seems to ignite karaoke machines into horrid renditions of “Love is a Battlefield” or “All by Myself.” But let’s take a second and remember when it was good and sweet and new and wonderful. That first red carnation? That glitterfilled card with a scrawly heart? Yep, elementary school, that beautiful time when a coated heart meant love – not Jared. So as a reminder to us old folks, we asked the kids to finish this sentence…

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

KEY WEST WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 10, 2017

KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

M

ark Hedden knows birds. His short story basically goes: born in Massachusetts, moved to Jersey, got degree, wife Nancy, dog Elly, and he’s pretty proud of winning a poker game a few weeks ago. When given the choice of working for Geraldo Rivera or moving to Key West, he chose Key West, and he’s so happy he did. As executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society, with the mission to connect people with nature that surrounds them, he also is a writer and photographer and has a workspace at The Studios of Key West.

Worst nickname? Something about getting called “Marky” drives me crazy. Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating. Who walks in and sits next to you? Phil Hartman. He was on “Saturday Night Live” and “News Radio,” and he did a lot of the voices on “The Simpsons.” One of the funniest human beings ever. I’d like to talk to John James Audubon, too, though he was a bit of a showboat. The one bird you’ve been searching for your entire life? All of them. But there’s a thing called a gyrfalcon – a giant white falcon of the northlands – they are majestic AF. Are hawks really like ninjas? Hawks are all kind of ninja. I think short-tailed hawks are the most ninja in how they fall silently out of the sun, from hundreds of feet up, with their talons extended, taking prey that never sees them coming. If you put a woodpecker in a room, what would happen? Back in the 18th century, Alexander Wilson (he’s famous in bird world) left a hurt Ivorybilled woodpecker alone in his hotel room. He came back and the furniture was pretty much matchsticks and sawdust, and the woodpecker had almost drilled a hole through the wall to escape. What’s your funniest Keys story? I got chased across town by a cop who thought I was someone else. He kept calling me “Kenneth” and I kept saying “But, I’m not!” Which TV or movie character is your alter ego? Bill Murray in “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.” If you could take one item on a deserted island, what? A boat, so I could leave.

BIRD GEEK 20 QUESTIONS WITH MARK HEDDEN

The boat is sinking, what do you grab? Memory cards from my camera shoved into a Ziploc bag. I might throw the phone in there, too. What would your superpower be? Flight. Definitely flight. Pet peeve about birdwatchers? A penchant for unfortunate hats. Funniest misconception about birds? That they are nice and boring, and that they have great love lives. If you could change the world, what would you do? Figure out a way to stop trashing the planet. I really like nature. Also, it’s the thing that keeps us alive. Who was your first celebrity crush and why? Trixie from “Speed Racer.” (It was before I learned that female characters are supposed to do more than fawn over the lead male character and fall into peril.) But Trixie could wear a pair of goggles like nobody’s business. Favorite place you’ve been looking for birds, what did you find? I went to Colombia last year. Unbelievably beautiful. Saw an owl that hadn’t been described to science yet, which means it doesn’t officially exist yet, though it’s been living in the same tract of forest for tens of thousands of years.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to get paid to jump motorcycles over cars while wearing a white leather jumpsuit. I feel it’s still a career option. Camera you use, and most difficult bird to photograph? I shoot a Canon 7D with a 100-400 zoom lens. The belted kingfisher is a hard bird to get a good picture of. You see them all the time but can’t get within 50 yards of them. It’s the photographic equivalent of the Greek myth of Tantalus. Finish these sentences: My autobiography would be titled … “Let The Wookie Win” 19. At the end of a rainbow there is … A nice marsh with a lot of birds I haven’t seen before. 20. I live by the motto … “I’m right on the edge. I don’t know what happens next.” – Steve Zissou

AMPHITHEATER PROCESS OFFERS POSITIVE POLITICS IN KEY WEST BRITT MYERS

britt@keysweekly.com

Y

es, full disclosure. I personally supported the proposed Truman Waterfront Amphitheater, which remained a reality after a 5-2 vote by City Commissioners this past Tuesday. The vote, which blocked a motion to rescind the multimilliondollar project, was one of the most anticipated agenda items at a commission meeting since the city’s decision to award $12.5 million to a private firm that purchased Peary Court last July. In the case of the amphitheater, many argued (mainly on contentious social media forums) the drama and hype leading up to Tuesday’s meeting was “unnecessary,” “disheartening” and a “waste of time.” In fact, a “protest rally” took place last Saturday on the proposed construction site, which only added to the dramatic buildup leading up to Tuesday’s vote. Yet amid the drama, and the idea that we could have (and likely should have) been focused on more pressing items (such as affordable housing) in the city, a rare attribute, seldom seen in recent governments across our nation, shone through the partisan darkness that has infected our country's ability to disassociate policy with party. Miraculously, supporters and dissenters of the amphitheater were not divided by party lines in Key West. Rather, most of those I saw and heard throughout the debates were seemingly a mingling of the left and right. And while this may not seem too extraordinary to the common observer, take a moment to consider the social division our nation has experienced since the presidential election. All too often our policies, conversations and social norms have been predicated on the idea that our neighbor belongs to one of two factions—the left or the right. And while I am taking nothing away from the convictions that identify our nation’s two major parties, one should be alarmed that an overwhelming “with us or against us” attitude has left little acceptance for those willing to examine policies without a restrictive conservative or liberal filter. Refreshingly, Key West politics, particularly from our dais and community members, continues to thrive without party allegiance. I’m willing to bet, like each of us, each council member leans either more favorably to the left or right. However, the amphitheater decision (no matter the outcome) was a refreshing reminder that our city, unlike so many others throughout our nation, maintains the ability to inject empathy and individual discernment into policy. In a world that demands we either subscribe to a Fox News or CNN worldview, it is my hope the Southernmost City can continue to live — and argue — under an enduring spirit of individual independence.

The Eggplant salad at Al Maidah is a must try.

KEY WEST GOES MEDITERRANEAN Al Maidah menu filled with delightful dishes HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

“A

l Maidah” is Arabic for “A table filled with food” and the new Mediterranean restaurant on White Street lives up to its name. Featuring dishes from Morocco, Turkey, Uzbek, Russia, Greek, Italy, and other cuisines, Al Maidah has a menu filled with delightfully different dishes veering from the usual southernmost fair. The menu can be described as healthy or decadent, dependent on the diner’s appetite. Mediterranean food is often hailed as one of the best diets, rich in vegetables and olive oil. The perfect example at Al Maidah is the eggplant salad. Even if you don’t love eggplant, something about this dish is completely satisfying. The eggplant is roasted until tender, then mixed with balsamic vinaigrette, tomatoes, basil and oregano and makes a perfect appetizer or side dish to share. A more unusual starter is khachapuri, a native Georgian dish. Khachapuri is a homemade bread bowl with cheese baked into it and filled on top with a runny egg. It’s a satisfying, unusual take on the American favorite combination of egg, cheese and bread. Lamb is a Mediterranean staple. Al Maidah has the more common dishes such as Gyro or shawarma, but try the Turkish dumplings called Manty. Manty are delectable steamed dumplings filled with a tasty seasoned mixture of lamb and onions served with a yogurt dipping sauce. And finish the meal with traditional homemade baklava, a heavenly crisp pastry filled layered with nuts and syrup.

Al Maidah 1019 White St. www.almaidahkeywest.com 305.922.2177

Al Maidah’s menu is packed with options, from the obvious like falafel, tabbouleh, and kebabs of all kinds to the hard-to-find like a good Borscht or Lamb Doner. But Al Maidah also offers traditional American fare like pasta and New York-style pizza, making it a dining experience for everyone, including the kids. Taking over the former Bistro Solé space, 1019 White Street, Al Maidah is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sit shaded in the large outdoor area or at the bar, off the beaten path of Duval and enjoy the flavors of some of the world’s best food.

Al Maidah’s homemade baklava is the perfect sweet dessert

Mural shows Keys connections

A

large-scale mosaic mural featuring art by almost 400 Florida Keys residents is touring the island chain to celebrate the connection between the community and local cultural initiatives. The Connections Project mural, spearheaded by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, is on display through Feb. 22 at the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center in Key Largo. The mural is made up of individual canvases measuring 6 inches square that were provided to local artists and creative residents. The completed canvases feature art in mediums including painting, photography, mixed media and quilting. Subsequent exhibition dates and venues are Feb. 24 through March 8 at Ocean Sotheby’s Gallery in Islamorada, March 10-22 at Shady Palm Gallery in Marathon, March 24 through April 5 at Big Pine’s Artists in Paradise Gallery, April 6-17 at Royal Furniture in Key West and April 18 through May 12 at the Gato Building in Key West. A reception is scheduled at each venue. After viewing the mural, patrons can make a $35 donation for one individual canvas or a $100 donation for three at any reception or online at www.keysarts.com. The mosaic pieces will be randomly chosen and mailed to donors. Proceeds benefit Keys artists and arts organizations. — Contributed

ey West Art & Historical Society invites locals and visitors to a flash-mob-style “Kiss-In” event on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, February 14, starting at 5:30 p.m., in front of the 25-foot tall Seward Johnson ‘Embracing Peace’ sculpture at the Custom House Museum at 281 Front St., Key West. The goal is to fill the street in front of the Museum on Valentine’s Day with a crowd of couples emulating Johnson’s sculpture, which was inspired by photographs of a sailor and nurse locked in a kiss in Times Square, New York, celebrating the end of World War II – an image that has been called the most famous kiss in American history. Participants are encouraged to arrive at 5:30, with the Kiss-In photo op to happen at exactly 6 p.m. “In a time when there seems to be so much anger and separa-

tion, let’s show the world that Key West embraces peace,” said Shawn Cowles, operations manager of the society. “This ‘Kiss-In’ pose will only be for a brief second but will share an important message to the world.” More information is available from Cowles at 305.295.6616, Ext. 111. — Contributed

efore the Baby Taylor guitar was invented, and before the ukulele craze, a very young Tim Hollohan started out on the smallest instrument his dad could find him, a mandolin. By age seven he was performing alongside his dad and uncle in a band called Stain Glass Bluegrass. They played old gospel songs like “The Old Rugged Cross” in an upbeat bluegrass style and performed in churches and at county fairs in South Carolina and Georgia. As he got older, Tim was more interested in sports than guitar, until an exgirlfriend encouraged him to start playing music in public. So in his mid-20s he learned a bunch of Buffett covers and got his first gig at Cheeseburger In Paradise in Greenville, South Carolina. One day they asked if he had a band for a Cinco de Mayo party and he said he did, but he didn't. But what he did have is a family full of musicians, so he started a band called Sullivan's Roof along with his brother, Sean Hollohan, and cousin, Robert Gunning the Fifth (aka Five Alive), and eventually his other cousin Andrew Gunning (now also a fulltime Key

Wester). The band performed upbeat sing-along ’90s pop like Matchbox 20 and the Goo Goo Dolls. While Tim played with the band a lot, he never thought he could really play music exclusively, so he still had a “day job.” After a whirlwind 24-hour visit to Key West he wound up landing a job at a building supply company in Monroe County and moved down in 2010. When he first got to Key West, he worked during the week and played music on the weekends. His first gigs were at Hog's Breath and Willie T's (before the stage and lighting). Tim eventually quit his day job and began working four to five nights a week playing music, but with all the extra singing, he developed a vocal nodule and had to take time off. In retrospect it was the best thing that could have happened because he was able to start over and think about playing music more seriously.

“Really I don’t know where it came from, that idea of trying to arrange the terms of my surrender. I don’t get to do that. It’s a labor in vain in that respect, if you think you can negotiate that with anyone, or anything. In reference to the title song, it’s in terms of love. You’ve got to give it up. The song says, ‘I can’t negotiate the terms.’” --John Hiatt, who will play the Key West Theater on March 20.

NO NAME PUB

B

artender Christy visited the Keys last August from Mississippi and fell in love with the island vibe. "I went home, sold my house, and moved to Little Torch," she said. With an estimated $500,000 tacked to the walls of No Name Pub on Big Pine Key, she said the charm of the place is nothing compared to her co-workers and customers who frequent the bar. Her favorite thing to serve up is the No Name Amber on draft. "It's always super cold and refreshing on hot Florida Keys days," she said, handing it over in a No Name souvenir glass. Her suggestions for food: none other than the famous pizza. Her favorites are the white shrimp and the royal. When she isn't working, she's enjoying what the Keys have to offer and spends her time on the boat fishing and likes to explore the island on her bicycle. No Name Pub's motto is "it's a nice place if you can find it." Directions aren't too bad, but lost tourists often ask how to get there. The address is 30813 Watson Blvd., turning at the only stop light on Big Pine Key. Don't forgot a few dollars to hang on the wall and be prepared to read about the rich history of the bar, which was established in 1936.

Under blue skies and balmy temps, the southernmost city took the plunge and raised over $8000 for Samuel’s House. Almost 200 swimmers braved the perfect weather and donated $25 and more for a T-shirt and dip in the ocean. The event raised money for Samuel’s House, which provides housing and other services for the homeless. —Weekly Staff report

Still Lucky after 35 years

BRIEFLY

New owners set gallery opening party HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

I

n today’s online world of digital imagery overload, are art galleries still relevant? Absolutely. The new owners of Lucky Street Gallery, Betty Gay and Jon McIntosh are poised to prove it. Gay, a photographer and installation artist, and McIntosh, an illustrator, painter and graphic designer, are focusing their knowledge and passion into bringing the next generation of Key West art to Lucky Street. “Our goal was to keep the legacy of Lucky Street as a Key West institution,” said McIntosh, “and create a space that was truly a premier gallery.” The newly renovated gallery is a former Cuban bakery on White Street. Gay and McIntosh waited a year for the building to be finished envisioning what is now a reality. With an industrial cement floor and high white walls, it is comparable to any New York gallery and can only do art justice. “It’s a gallery where established artists can step outside their boundaries, and new artists can find a place in Key West,” said Gay. The room itself can be adjusted and altered for installation works, large paintings and group shows creating a variety of options for art. Gay and McIntosh, at first glance, may seem a mismatched duo. Gay, a West Virginia native, has the youthful flair, while McIntosh, with his Boston roots, has the creative experience. They met by chance working for Lucky Street’s

former owner, Sandra McMannis, and partnered to buy the gallery when it came up for sale. The owners vary in artistic tastes but complement each other with their humor, wit and zeal for the arts promising to make future shows more interesting than not. “We want to be a more forward looking gallery,” said McIntosh, “but we also know it’s not just about putting art on the walls but in people’s homes.” The owners both agree that service and attending to the 35 years of loyal customers will be a main priority. Lucky Street has been the home to Key West’s most prestigious artists such as John Martini, Michael Haykin and Roberta Marks and now, the own-

One-act premieres New plays by Florida writers at Key West Theater

F

rom a disconnection from technology that becomes a revelation to a story of two people brought together by fate, a series of one-act plays will premiere this month in Key West. “129 Miles From Walmart,” opening at the Key West Theater on Friday, Feb. 17, includes world premieres of original short plays and celebrates those who are living their lives a bit differently than most. “We want to continue to give a voice to new playwrights,” says Key West Theater Artistic Director Juliet Gray, “especially those living and writing in Key West.” Most of the new works in “129 Miles From Walmart” – the title reflects the distance to Key West

The evening stars Colin Bevis, Brian Furlong, Erin McKenna, Joanie Sullivan, Philip Cole White and Alexandra Zeto. In “How to Explode the World,” by Key West playwright Jon Rhoads, a veteran surgeon mentors a young doctor through a crisis of conscience. The play “It’s in the Stars,” by Gainesville playwright Stefanie Anarumo, is the story of two people who are brought together by the manipulation of fate. Integrating American Sign Language into the story, this original piece explores the true meaning of communication, love, and understanding. “129 Miles From Walmart: New One-Act Plays by Florida Writers” opens on Friday, Feb. 17 and runs through March 18 at the Key West Theater, 512 Eaton St. in Old Town. e-creations of military maneuvers, period crafts demonstrations, and living history demonstrations brought the Civil War to life last weekend in Key West with the annual Civil War Heritage Days at Fort Zachary Taylor. Contributed 1. Historic re-enactor Mark Moss of Key West ignites interest in a group of Horace O’Bryant Middle School students with a black-powder demonstration during Civil War Heritage Days at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park on Friday. Black powder was the gunpowder of the day during the Civil War era. Key West Art & Historical Society sponsored 145 eight-graders from the school to attend and participate in the 31st annual living history event. 2. Historic re-enactor Rick “Deadeye” Wheelus (background) coaches Horace O’Bryant Middle School students, front to back: Isabella Lopez, Yanessa Camejo, Marie Willy, Edmary Cea, Zamyrie Hepburn and Deshawn Fisher in a heavy artillery loading drill. 3. Jerry Leitschuh, a historic re-enactor and member of the 10th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry from Springfield, Illinois, shows a group of Horace O’Bryant Middle School students a Civil War era bullet. 4. ON THE STAGE

KEY WEST WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 10, 2017

Maribeth Graham and David Black play a couple traveling through 50 years of marriage in ‘I Do, I Do.’ LARRY BLACKBURN/Contributed

A classic revival ‘I Do, I Do’ comes to Red Barn

T

he story goes that the great acting teams who have played the lead roles in “I Do, I Do” found it difficult to leave because they loved them so much. Broadway legends Mary Martin and Robert Preston – the originators of the roles of Agnes and Michael Snow – ran an unheard-of (in the day) 560 performances. Carol Lawrence and Gordon MacRae took over and ran for nearly as long. Carol Burnett and Rock Hudson took the show on a national tour that ran for nearly two years. Now, two of Key West’s bestknown actors, Maribeth Graham and David Black, will take the stage in a revival of the classic musical, at the Red Barn Theatre starting Feb. 21. So what makes this show garner such devotion, not only from the actors but from audiences and critics as well? “Everyone can relate to it,” said Black. “Anyone who’s been in a marriage, or a relationship, or even a friendship. Two people come together, and soon they have to deal with what they love about each other, and, yes, what they dislike about each other. It’s about what’s underneath that holds it all together. It’s really a very sweet story.” And with 19 very hummable Broadway tunes, it’s a musical lover’s dream, according to Graham. “The melodies are simply beautiful,” she said. “There’s a lot of the pure genius of ‘The Fantasticks’ in it. It’s very uplifting.” With book and lyrics by Tom Jones (no, not that Tom Jones) and music by

“I Do, I Do,” Tuesday through Saturday, Feb. 21-March 18, 8 p.m., Red Barn Theatre, 319 Duval St., Key West. Information at 305-296-9911 or redbarntheatre.com.

Harvey Schmidt, the show was written in the mid-’60s about a couple’s 50-year marriage from 1895 to 1945. Jones swept the awards table with “The Fantasticks” a couple of years earlier, and with “I Do, I Do”, he garnered another seven Tony nominations. The show’s director, Red Barn Artistic Director Joy Hawkins, got to see the final performance of Martin and Preston in their inaugural run years ago. “I just loved it,” she said. “And to this day I know every note and word in every song. There is just something about it that gets you – a richness, a cleverness to the story and the music. There’s a reason it’s a classic.” The opening night performance on Feb. 21 will include an after-show party catered by Danny Becker and Three Fine Cooks. All ticket holders that night are encouraged to attend and mingle with the show’s cast and crew. “I Do, I Do” is sponsored by WLRN and in part by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. — Contributed
