The Super Bowl is afoot. Cue the hilarious commercials, outrageous halftime show, lofty predictions, and lit Super Bowl parties. Every year, teams trudge through the regular season with hopes of making it to the Mecca of American sporting events. And if you’re lucky enough (sorry Browns fans) your team probably has a shot at making the big game. Just as the teams prepare for a night of spectacle and emotion, so must the fans. So to make sure everyone’s Super Bowl checklist is up to date, the Weekly asked …

What snacks shouldn’t you forget for the big game? “Layered bean dip, artichoke dip, tacos, and my secret curry cheese dip, of course,” said Carole Hayes of the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center.

Judy Chesher, of Art on a Whim art gallery, said “Finger foods, ice cream, cake, tacos, or fresh fruit.”

Katie Bajra, of the Rain Barrel Artisan Village, said “Sardines and pickles.”

“Hot dogs and hamburgers for sure. They’re a must,” said Saul Facio of Puerto Vallarta Mexican Bar & Grill.

“It’s not so much the food that I’ll forget, it’s more something that you drink,” joked Terri Keeney, also of the Rain Barrel Artisan Village.

Taste Around the World Annual event benefits hospice services GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

T

he Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of the Florida Keys are collaborating yet again to bring Upper Keys residents the annual Taste Around the World. On Saturday, Feb. 18, local restaurants will create dishes representing various countries and their unique cuisines. Partnering with Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center, the annual tasting will welcome guests to its third installment at the Murray Nelson Government Center starting at 6:30 p.m. Taste Around the World will feature dishes from Kaiyo Grill & Sushi, the Green Turtle Inn Restaurant, White Lion Café, the Fish House Restaurant/Encore, Playa Largo Resort and the Hilton Key Largo Resort. Last year’s defending “People’s Choice” winners, The Key Largo Conch House, is excited to be a part of the event again, said owner Laura Dreaver. After deciding on Spain, the Conch House is tossing around the idea of making paella. “We have been participating since

the first year, and we think it’s a great organization, so we’re happy to all volunteer our time. We look forward to it every year,” said Dreaver. The Green Turtle Inn chose Japan and Italy as its culinary inspirations. Chef Ryan Wisely and company won’t disappoint. “We’re super excited to be doing it this again year,” said Green Turtle Catering Director Amanda Blamowski, after a hiatus. “We decided on making pickled octopus salad and short rib lasagna parmesan with green sauce.” Authors David Sloan and Brad Berterlli also plan to hold a book signing for “A Local’s Guide to Bloodline: 50 Famous Film Locations in the Florida Keys.” A talent show and silent auction are also planned. The Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of the Florida Keys provides physical, medical, emotional, and spiritual support to patients with advanced life limiting illnesses. Through the organization’s palliative and hospice programs and services, patients and their families are provided with compassionate care aimed at improving quality of life.

CROWN THE KAHUNA gabriel@keysweekly.com

BEACH LUAU SETS THE STAGE

T

he 6th annual Beach Luau is set for Saturday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at Angler House Marina in Islamorada. Along with a luau feast, drinks, and entertainment, and silent auction, this year’s Big Kahuna will be crowned. Kahuna Through donations and sponsorships sales, kahunas raise money for the Good Health Clinic in Tavernier. Contestants began campaigning in October and are in the final stretch of fundraising. Since 2011, more than 30 Keys locals have participated in the Big Kahuna Contest. Over the years they have helped raise more than $130,000 for the Good Health Clinic. The clinic provides health care to citizens of Monroe County who are struggling: low-income residents, uninsured, or homeless, for example. Past Kahunas include Nelson Sanchez of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Rob Stober of Hershoff, Lupino and Yagel, Vicki Walker of Centennial Bank, Capt. Skip of Blue Chip Charters, and Rick Freeburg, CEO of Mariners Hospital. “Like the contest and contestants, this year’s Big Kahuna trophy has also gotten bigger and better,” said clinic Executive Director Kate Banick. Kahunas can be as creative as they want in raising money. While some have used conventional means to raise funds, others have spiced up their efforts in anticipation of the Feb. 15 deadline.

pon entering Blue Mangrove Art Gallery, you’ll notice the masterpieces on the walls are lush with bold color and eye-popping realism. Much of that is thanks to the colorful originals of Jessica Ann Hessing. Hessing, a native Conch, takes her artistic inspiration from Keys sights and marine life. Her artwork is very much reflective of her first love − the ocean. “I’ve always painted, but once I started my marine biology program in college, I switched my subjects from flowers and some of the things I saw traveling to fish,” said Hessing. “Mahi are probably my favorite to paint,

along with sailfish, and octopus.” Hessing’s background in marine biology allows her to capture every colorful detail of the water and sea life. She usually paints with acrylics, which give off vibrancy and pull on-lookers in. Hessing also uses thick outlines to add a meatiness to her creations. Her choice of surfaces includes canvas, driftwood, and recycled items. “I do a lot of underwater photography, which is where I take a lot of my imagining from,” said Hessing. What’s next for the budding Keys artist? “I’ve been working with a company to start making boat wraps, golf cart wraps, and trailer wraps,” said Hessing. “I also have been teaching paint classes from Key Largo to Little Torch Key; it’s my style, just a bit simplified.” Hessing’s originals range from $900 to $1,500. Limited edition giclee prints range from $180 to $500. Visit www.Jessicaannart.com for paint class information.

ey Largo Conch House is quaint in many ways. The small restaurant is nestled among palm trees, protecting its guests from the harsh Florida sun. Its compact layout and “old Keys” style porches give off the feeling of being home. In keeping with its simplistic approach, the draft beer options are well thought out, minimalistic, and rotate monthly. They’ve managed to find one gem recently that is surely worth trying: the Sea Cow Milk Stout. “It’s more of an acquired taste,” said Ashley Galloway of the beer’s nutty and chocolaty flavors. “It goes really well with one of our desserts.” Galloway, a Key Largo native, has been tending bar for four years. In her down time, she devotes attention to painting. Whether it be a sip and paint night, or creating one of her unique cartoon crossovers, Galloway uses the medium to relax and stay creative. “One of my more interesting crossovers is of the characters from Bob’s Burgers and Adventure Time,” said Galloway. A student at Florida Keys Community College, Galloway has dreams of being an emergency-room nurse. Visit Galloway at the Key Largo Conch House located at 100211 Overseas Highway, Key Largo. She’ll have a Sea Cow Milk Stout ready.

t was an evening in December, as Carson Bennett and Amber Benjamin were cutting up avocados, when an idea sparked. From Amber’s family history of healthy eating, and Carson’s love of snacks, the two decided to open a guacamole stand. Guaca-Go was born. “I’ve always come up with ideas, but this time we felt we were on to something,” said Bennett. “It’s difficult to find something to eat that is quick, easy, cheap and healthy. We felt this idea was a good middle ground.” The ingredients they choose for their guacamole are purchased from local farmer’s markets. After a bit of experimentation, the two decided on using ingredients not typically found in other traditional guacamoles. Some of their more unusual ingredients include serrano peppers, garlic, cabbage, orange bell peppers, coconut oil, and secret spices. After mashing the ingredients together, they put the fresh guacamole back into the original avocado skin, which doubles as a bowl. Served with a bag of fresh tortilla chips, the “guac” can go anywhere. “The fun part about our guacamole is that it really sells itself. People see others carrying it around and they’re definitely intrigued,” said Benjamin. “Before we knew it, we had folks showing up with Tupperware and buying 4 or 5 at once so they can eat it throughout the week,” said Bennett. Brad De Chantal, of Florida Bay Outfitters, had plenty to say about

his new favorite snack. “The fresh taste is fantastic, and you can modify it to suit your liking. The presentation is clever and it’s a healthy affordable option. It’s perfect after you’ve been on the water all day, and goes great with a beer,” said De Chantal. Half a skin goes for $6, while a whole is $10. If you’re wondering what Guaca-Go does with all the avocado pits they are left with, you’d be surprised to know that they have started growing their own avocado trees with the goal of self-sustainability. The budding entrepreneurs say they have always enjoyed challenge and being creative. While working as traveling tour guides, the two paired up, adapted to each other’s style, and guided 22 people around San Francisco. Since relocating to the Keys last October, their teamwork and creativity has only gotten stronger. Eventually, the two say they would like to franchise Guaca-Go. (It used to be called Guaca-Goie, like the banner pictured.) They are in the process of re-branding and hope to develop a system that is easy to market. “We want to partner with more local businesses as well,” said Bennett. Guaca-Go is located just outside of the Caribbean Club in Key Largo. Though currently at one location, Bennett and Benjamin would like to pop up at public events throughout the Keys, including private parties. They are slated to attend the annual Pigeon Key Art Festival in Marathon. Visit www.guaca-go.com for more details.

mosaic created by hundreds of artists and art lovers will begin a tour of the Keys next week. And after the tour, fans can own part of the massive work. The Florida Keys Council of the Arts is launching its fifth annual Connections Project road show with a grand opening reception at the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center in Key Largo on Tuesday, Feb. 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. featuring a vibrant 24-foot mosaic mural created by local artists and art lovers. The reception, with wine and hors d’oeuvres, is open to the public and sponsored by Royal Furniture. For the Connections Project, the arts council provides a 6-inch by 6-inch blank canvas to local professional artists and artistic residents, who then create a piece of art. “People of all abilities and skill levels are encouraged to participate,” said Florida Keys Arts Council Executive Director Elizabeth Young. “We offer workshops for non-artists, led by local artists. And, we’re privileged to have more than 300 professional Keys artists contributing a piece of art to Connections Project 2017.” Once the nearly 400 completed canvases are collected, the mosaic is assembled by volunteers and taken on the road from Key Largo to Key West, for six art receptions and exhibitions, for about two weeks at each stop. After connecting with the art, patrons can also collect art by making a $35 donation for one canvas or a $100 donation for three at any reception or online at www.key-

Tracking will help monitor during fawning season

T

hirty adult female Key deer are now able to “pop” their collars – radio collars, that is. In mid-January, Key deer researchers from Texas A&M University and veterinarians and biologists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service captured and placed electronic tracking collars on Key deer at Big Pine and No Name Keys. The small, lightweight flexible vinyl collars are specially made for Key deer. The collars allow the service to find and monitor these Key deer does more easily now – and more importantly, during the upcoming fawning season – for possible screwworm infestation. Fawning season, which usually starts in March or April, will be a critical time because of how these parasites lay eggs in open wounds, where they hatch and become flesh-eating maggots. Does and fawns are particularly vulnerable during the birthing process. Biologists are checking on these collared does several times weekly. When fawning season begins, they will increase observations to a daily schedule. The deer that have received advanced veterinary care have a number shaved onto their sides for relocation and monitoring. The fish and wildlife service has been visually monitoring these deer, and will continue to do so through the next few months as a sort of welfare check.

Earlier this month, two Key deer, from Big and Little Munson Islands, were confirmed to have been infested with screwworm by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory. One of these was found deceased and the other was euthanized. “We’ve got to be especially vigilant with fawning season coming,” said Dan Clark, Refuge Manager, Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex. “Should fertile screwworm flies be detected or an infested animal confirmed, Key deer does and fawns will be at higher risk. If it happens, we’ll be prepared to move swiftly with preventative treatments and/or other contingency operations already planned and established to protect the subspecies.” The radio collars will also provide data to improve the Service’s ability to estimate the population and identify changes in population numbers. The presence of New World screwworm was confirmed here on Sept. 30, 2016. Since then, the Service has worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Monroe County, and others to eradicate this parasite and protect the endangered Key deer and other wildlife from infestation. — Contributed

oy Scout Troop 914, chartered by San Pedro Catholic Church, recently traveled up to the Lincoln Marti camporee to compete alongside other Boy Scout, Girl Scout, Cub Scout, and Adventure Scout troops. The Upper Keys scouts won best all-around campers at the event. “The goal of the camporee is to get the various organizations together and see how they intermingle and what they teach each other during the competition,” said Troop 914 Scout Master Chris Walterson. More than 25 troops gathered at Carlos Arboleya Camping & Picnic Grounds in Miami for the “Scouts Go to the Movies” event. The competition had various facets, including flag designing and pioneering. Pioneering tests a scout’s ability to build rustic structures by using rope, poles and knots. It is one of scouting's oldest skills. With a little ingenuity, troop 914 built a 6-foot by 65-inch movie screen and lounging sling to enjoy the show. “The boys came together and showed that they were able to take something out of nothing, and then make it useful,” said Walterson. To join the Boy Scouts, contact Troop914@keysscouts.com for details. —Weekly Staff report

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

DR. FRANK TRUE LANSDEN (LEFT) Dr. Frank True Lansden, who goes by Dr. True, loves the Keys. He and his wife Lisa just saw their fifth son off to college and now have expanded the practice from Marathon to Key West. Originally, Dr. True studied law, but followed his father’s footsteps into medicine at the age of 30. He studied at Tulane University (residency, plastic surgery), Medical University of South Carolina Residency (general surgery) and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Featured on “Good Morning America” twice and on an HBO documentary, Dr. True has helped call out illegal doctors, underground plastic surgery operations and has helped victims of poor cosmetic surgery. There is nothing false about True, a dedicated family man and surgeon. Helping people just happens to be the genuine outcome of his work. 1. Full Name? Dr. Frank True Lansden Jr. 2. Worst nickname? False. 3. Who’s your favorite TV or movie doctor? Alan Alda, Hawkeye from “M*A*S*H.” 4. What misconception do people have about plastic surgeons? They think we use plastic and we are all “boobs and butts.” Actually, it’s about working with the body from head to toe, cradle to grave — all types of problems, any age. 5. If not a doctor, then what dream job would you have? I was going to be a lawyer once, and a pilot, but now I would have to say a yacht broker; I love boats. 6. Finish this sentence: The world needs more … happy people. 7. What is something people don’t know about cosmetic surgery? Botox is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. There are so many different ways to use Botox for a variety of problems. 8. Favorite guilty pleasure? Bread pudding, any kind. 9. What procedure do you like doing? Facelifts: the change can be so dramatic and they don’t take long for results. 10. Your work philosophy? When I recreate something, I always think about form and function; the two go hand in hand. That’s how you make people happy.

BEDSIDE MANNER 20 QUESTIONS WITH PLASTIC SURGEONS DR. JEFFREY WEINZWEIG AND DR. FRANK TRUE LANSDEN

L

ike finding a four-leaf clover, it was good fortune for the Keys when Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig and Dr. Frank True Lansden joined the staff at the Lower Keys Medical Center on the exact same day last February. Now Dr. Weinzweig and Dr. Lansden, both board certified plastic surgeons, are combining resources and working together to advance cosmetic surgery in the Keys. With lengthy resumes and years of experience, the doctors provide an invaluable resource for residents, whether it’s emergency reconstructive surgery or cosmetic procedures. For many, that means no more trips to Miami. But these doctors – who slip Greek and Latin into everyday conversation – aren’t just about Botox or facelifts. Dr. Weinzweig and Dr. Lansden provide an immense level of expertise with treating skin cancer, reconstructive breast cancer surgery, repairing mutilated hands, facial reconstruction, and more. They are on call at the Lower Keys Medical Center, as well as at their practices, to help residents of the Keys rebuild their bodies, from small feel-good procedures to life-changing reconstruction.

DR. JEFFREY WEINZWEIG (RIGHT) Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig and his wife, Ashley, spent a weekend in the Keys and that was enough to move their family of three young boys to Key West. Dr. Weinzweig had paid his dues in the cold by receiving his medical degree from Columbia University, with a surgery residency in Chicago, plastic surgery residency at Brown University, on faculty at Brown, a fellowship in hand surgery at the University of Connecticut and a craniofacial surgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He has seven issued and pending patents in the fields of aesthetic surgery, craniofacial surgery and the management of migraine headaches. With more than 200 publications, five textbooks and a first novel on the way, it’s safe to say Dr. Weinzweig is passionate about his work. 1. Full Name: Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig. (No middle name; Dr. Weinzweig’s father was a Polish immigrant who survived the Holocaust and reached New York City. Middle names were not a common practice.) 2. Worst nickname? At the moment, “Gimpy.” (Dr. Weinzweig was wearing a boot due to fracturing his foot by falling.) 3. What question do you hate to answer? “Will this hurt?” But I respond, “Not for me!” 4. Who’s your favorite TV or movie doctor? Howie Mandel, Dr. Wayne Fiscus on “St. Elsewhere.” 5. If not a doctor, then what dream job would you have? Architect, but really reconstructive surgery is similar. 6. Finish this sentence: The world needs more … competent surgeons. 7. Which TV, movie or super hero character is your alter ego? Clark Kent. 8. What is your nerdiest passion? I am writing my sixth textbook and developing software about facial tissue. I think that is nerdy enough. 9. Favorite guilty pleasure? Licorice. 10. Do you look at people’s faces off the clock? Yes, sometimes. But it’s when procedures aren’t done well. I can’t help but notice them. If a procedure is done well, then I shouldn’t notice it, right?

CSHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 3, 2017

17

The Upper Keys Weekly is proud to partner with Coral Shores High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and CSHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Cane Pride.”

JUAN GONZALEZ FRESHMAN What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? I’m involved in basketball and football at Coral Shores because sports are something I’ve done my whole life and love them. Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why? My biggest inspiration is Coach Bryant. He’s like a father figure to his players. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Math and science because I plan on being an engineer. Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? I barely use either. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Invasive species. We need to find a way to relocate them. What are your plans after high school? I want to go to a four- year university. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Not really because there’s not much to do. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… About marine life.
