he City of Marathon officially broke ground on its new utilities and public works building on Wednesday. The $1.9 million structure, located at 104th Street and U.S.1, is paid for by the state Mayfield Grant (70 percent) and a gas tax. “Besides being a much needed home for both public works and the utility departments, it will also be a centralized facility for shipping and receiving, storing equipment, and allows us to be efficient by storing needed materials such as gravel and sand on site,” said Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey. The project was designed by K2M Designs, is to be constructed by Pedro Falcon Contractors and overseen by a Chen-Moore & Associates representative. The project is set to be complete by October. When finished, it will also feature men and women’s showers, secure storage area, card key access and video surveillance.

Marathon Vice Mayor Michelle Coldiron, left, Mayor Dan Zieg, Public Works Director Carlos Solis, Councilman Steve Cook, Councilman Mark Senmartin and Utilities Director Dan Saus throw some ceremonial dirt. Councilman John Bartus was unable to attend. SARA MATTHIS/Keys Weekly

Thanks for hospitality Last weekend we hosted five couples at our home for a few days. The men were fraternity brothers at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the late ’60s and have remained friends ever since. Friday was the perfect day for a trip on the water so we decided to go to Burdines for lunch on our boat. We had taken the group there in past years and they loved it. All 12 of us had an excellent meal complete with their delicious French fries, stone crab chowder, and sandwiches and beverages. When it was time to pay the check our lovely waitress, Megan, said the meal was on Randy as a thank-you for our past patronage! What a surprise! Our out of town friends were so impressed with the kindness, friendliness and generosity of Burdines! Thank you Randy and the excellent staff at Burdines for all you do. We will highly recommend you eat at Burdines for a wonderful experience in Marathon! The Super Bowl is afoot. Cue the hilarious commercials, outrageous halftime show, lofty predictions, and lit Super Bowl parties. Every year, teams trudge through the regular season with hopes of making it to the Mecca of American sporting events. And if you’re lucky enough (sorry Browns fans) your team probably has a shot at making the big game. Just as the teams prepare for a night of spectacle and emotion, so must the fans. So to make sure everyone’s Super Bowl check list is up to date, the Weekly asked…

Baptist and Fishermen’s sign affiliation agreement Health institutions are one step closer

Weekly Staff report

B

aptist Health South Florida and Fishermen’s Community Hospital have signed an affiliation agreement. The merger is expected to be complete by June 30, 2017 and is subject to various contingencies and approvals. Both organizations have compatible not-for-profit cultures committed to quality and community benefit. “Baptist Health and Fishermen’s Community Hospital share a similar mission of providing high-quality, compassionate care to our communities,” said Brian E. Keeley, president and chief executive officer of Baptist Health South Florida. “This affiliation will help to complement the excellent care that Baptist Health already pro-

vides at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, and will provide patients in the Florida Keys with expanded access to Baptist Health’s services and physicians across South Florida.” “We are excited to become a part of Baptist Health South Florida and to continue our work in providing exceptional care to our community,“ said Peter Chapman, chairman of the Fishermen’s Community Hospital Board of Trustees. “Baptist Health is known throughout the region for their excellence in patient care and their community-focused mission. We share their vision and look forward to working with our new partner for the benefit of our patients and employees.” The two organizations signed a letter of intent in November of 2016 and will continue working together on the affiliation.

BRIEFLY Tax prep volunteers needed United Way of the Florida Keys is looking for volunteers to assist with a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offered free to taxpayers with low or moderate incomes. Volunteers are trained to ensure low-income families receive appropriate credits and will receive free training to become IRS certified tax preparers. Tax preparation will be held throughout the Keys beginning in February. For more information, contact Loretta Geotis at vita@keysunitedway.org, or call 305797-1704.

A Key deer scampers away after being fitted with a radio collar. CHRISTINE OGURA/Contributed

Key deer on the radio Tracking will help monitor during fawning season

T

hirty adult female Key deer are now able to “pop” their collars – radio collars, that is. In mid-January, Key deer researchers from Texas A&M University and veterinarians and biologists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service captured and placed electronic tracking collars on Key deer at Big Pine and No Name Keys. The small, lightweight flexible vinyl collars are specially made for Key deer. The collars allow the service to find and monitor these Key deer does more easily now – and more importantly, during the upcoming fawning season – for possible screwworm infestation. Fawning season, which usually starts in March or April, will be a critical time because of how these parasites lay eggs in open wounds, where they hatch and become flesh-eating maggots. Does and fawns are particularly vulnerable during the birthing process. Biologists are checking on these collared does several times weekly. When fawning season begins, they will increase observations to a daily schedule. The deer that have received advanced veterinary care have a number shaved onto their sides for relocation and monitoring. The fish and wildlife service has been visually monitoring these deer, and will continue to do so through the next few months as a sort of welfare check.

Earlier this month, two Key deer, from Big and Little Munson Islands, were confirmed to have been infested with screwworm by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory. One of these was found deceased and the other was euthanized. “We’ve got to be especially vigilant with fawning season coming,” said Dan Clark, Refuge Manager, Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex. “Should fertile screwworm flies be detected or an infested animal confirmed, Key deer does and fawns will be at higher risk. If it happens, we’ll be prepared to move swiftly with preventative treatments and/or other contingency operations already planned and established to protect the subspecies.” The radio collars will also provide data to improve the Service’s ability to estimate the population and identify changes in population numbers. The presence of New World screwworm was confirmed here on Sept. 30, 2016. Since then, the Service has worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Monroe County, and others to eradicate this parasite and protect the endangered Key deer and other wildlife from infestation. — Contributed

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

S

ince February 2009, Jennifer Johnson has been in the finance department for the City of Marathon, promoted to finance director in May 2014. She is soft-spoken, thorough and diligent. As an employee of Bishop & Rosasco, Johnson manages the finances for the Middle Keys city.

MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 03, 2017

For 13 consecutive years, Marathon has been awarded the “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting” for its comprehensive annual financial report. The long name accurately reflects its importance — in 2015, only about 170 cities in Florida achieved the same standard.

1. Full name: Jennifer Johnson. 2. Worst or best nickname? My friends and family call me Jeni or Jen. 3. Why math? I’ve always liked math — there’s an answer; it has balance. 4. Why accounting? My senior year of high school, I was also enrolled at the community college in Melbourne, Florida. The teacher told a story about a young woman earning $100 an hour as an accountant. I thought, “Sold!” (Later I would find out that’s not exactly true.) Plus it fits my nature — I am a little shy and I like working independently. 5. What would surprise Marathon residents about Marathon’s finances? Well, we have a low tax rate. For example, the city has one of the lowest millage rates for a municipality in the state of Florida. 6. Do you like public accounting? Yes; not only do I get to work on governmental finances, but I also get to work on some other engagements. It’s never the same from day to day, and I enjoy the many different people that I get to work with. 7. What degree(s) do you hold? I have a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting from University of Central Florida. 8. How many boxes of financial records are currently stacked in your office? 14 in my office, but there are a lot more. It’s part of our contract, to retain all the finance records. 9. What’s your lucky number? Seven — I was born on Dec. 27 at 7:17 p.m. and weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces. 10. What are your future career goals? I would like to get the GFOA award for Distinguished Budget Presentation for the city’s budget. 11. Do you play the lotto? Not religiously, no. The odds aren’t there. 12. Do you have a formal, personal budget? Yes, I have a budget. My husband doesn’t really stick to it, though. I tell him just because you have money in your pocket, doesn’t mean it’s not designated! My husband and I just started a business, so I’m helping him with his books, in my personal time. I tell him, keep every receipt!

Johnson, 37, moved to the Keys eight years ago to join her now-husband Brian “Red” Johnson. And, yes, she does the books for him, too.

SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

20 QUESTIONS WITH JENNIFER JOHNSON 13. How did you meet your husband? We met at the wedding of my best friend to his brother. He was the best man and I was the maid of honor. I caught the bouquet and he caught the garter. BUT we didn’t start dating until years later. 14. What’s your favorite software? I’m an Excel freak. 15. If you could have any superhero power, what would it be? I would love to fly. 16. What websites do you hit every day? Keysnews, TMZ, and the Elite Deal Club. 17. What do you do on the weekend? Play any sports? We do the normal things — go out on the boat, go fishing. In high school, I was on the rowing team. We were pretty good; we almost made it to the nationals. 18. Do you have fur babies? Yes, three. Bubba, Izzy and Sadie-Mae. Bubba we found on the side of I-95 during Thanksgiving weekend one year. 19. What’s your favorite music? Stick Figure is my favorite group. I like reggae, I guess. 20. What’s the most surprising thing about Marathon’s finances? There is not a lot of wiggle room in the budget for capital improvements. The city receives roughly $3 million a year in discretionary sales tax revenues. We are using those funds to pay the bond on City Hall that’s close to $1 million per year. Once we transfer the $650,000 to the stormwater fund, that only leaves approximately $1.35 million of uncommitted funds annually, to be used for future capital improvements.

Lazy Bonez, a Southern Rock tribute band from Florida, will be jammin’ at the Coral Head Music Festival in mid-February.

NOTHIN’ LAZY ABOUT IT Lazy Bonez to share stage with Molly Hatchet and Georgia Satellites SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

Y

ou know what might be better than an ’80s Southern Rock band? An ’80s Southern Rock tribute band. Tribute bands don’t swear allegiance to any distinct discography. “It’s a tribute band, so they are going to play all the hits,” said concert organizer Rich Anderson. “Sweet Child of Mine.” “Don’t Need Nothin’ But a Good Time.” “Rock You Like a Hurricane.” Lazy Bonez is coming to Marathon on Saturday, Feb. 18. The band will join the Georgia Satellites and Molly Hatchet, trading places on the Marathon Community Park amphitheater stage from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. “We play a very specific genre of rock,” said lead vocalist Joey Bravo. “There’s no Cyndi Lauper or Flock of Seagulls. We cut our teeth on Van Halen, AC/DC, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Bon Jovi — party stuff.” Bravo is joined by Ludwig Austin on bass, Jwani Brito on drums and Dorian Vaz on guitar. Formed in 2010, the band has moved past gigs in smoky joints to headlining at Bike Week in Daytona in 2015, playing a gig for 15,000 in Mexico and another concert at Busch Gardens in 2014.

Tickets to the Coral Head Music Festival on Saturday, Feb. 18 are $25 in advance or $35 at the gate. Tickets available at www.keystix. com. The show is being put on by the Marathon chapter of the American Legion Riders.

“Mostly we play festivals and we have corporate clients like Royal Caribbean and Hard Rock Café,” said Bravo. “We’ve played in Mexico and Texas and Buffalo, New York, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. You never know where the show is going to be.” Lazy Bonez is super enthusiastic about Southern rock, so don’t expect any cheesy, halfhearted parody of a parody. “We ARE of this age, which I won’t divulge because we’re so young and sexy. It was a positive time for music. It had an identity and a wardrobe,” Bravo said. Oh, the Spandex, the leather, the long hair. Bravo said he’s excited to play alongside the Georgia Satellites and Molly Hatchet. “Bring your party with you on Feb. 18. We’re going to have us a good time that night.”

he Elwell family was recognized in Key West this past weekend as this year’s Humanitarians of the Year. Patriarch Ross Elwell, eyes filled with tears, said, “Do something special for someone who needs it, any chance you get.” Shirley Freeman, former Monroe County commissioner, of Key West was also recognized with the lifetime achievement award. The gala is named for Florence Spottswood, who brought the Red Cross to the Keys in 1917, only five years after the railroad arrived in Key West. hristopher Rounds and Patrick Hegarty are no strangers to remodels. The duo completely flipped the $2.5 million investment of Key West’s La Te Da three years ago, which went from an abused historic business, to one of Key West’s most sophisticated small resorts, complete with restaurant, piano bar, and cabaret. As new owners of the recently renamed La Te Da by the Sea, Rounds and Hegarty hope to add their Midas touches to the oceanfront properties once known as Casa Del Sol, Yellowtail Inn and Bonefish Motel on Grassy Key. “We have been spending a lot of time running back and forth from Home Depot and Royal Furniture,” said Rounds. “I’m pretty sure I just paid for the new Royal Furniture building in Marathon.” The 38 rooms are undergoing extreme makeovers, from all new linens and mattresses, to painting and flooring. “We are starting from a clean slate,” Rounds said. “We had to.” Catherine de Villada and Cathy Picard spent their anniversary weekend in one of the property’s two bedroom suites. “It was a beautiful stay,” said de Villada, who frequents the Key West La Te Da property. “We really enjoyed overlooking the ocean, the beach at the resort, and dinners at Hideaway Café.” As a bonus, famed Key West artist Rick Worth, a family friend of Rounds and Hegarty, is working on all the artwork for the resort. (And, they are still looking for the stolen Rick Worth-created Cornelius from Key West’s La Te Da’s Christmas display ...)

La Te Da is short for La Terraza de Marti – The Key West location’s balcony is where Jose Marti gave revolutionary “Cuba Libre” speeches in the 1890s. Rounds says the same hospitable, courteous staff that are well known at the Key West property will be at the Grassy Key property.

As homeowners in Key West and their home-away-fromhome in Conch Key, Christopher Rounds joked that he needed the new business to help pay for their Conch Key house. The over-the-water Conch Key house is equipped with a glass floor in the kitchen so “certain items” could be passed from the boats to the house securely during its onetime drug-running days. It’s also the same house where the Keys scenes were filmed for the 2001 “Heartbreakers” movie starring Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ray Liotta, and Jason Lee.

This is the band’s third trip to the Keys, but the farthest southwest they’ve traveled in the islands. n addition to fine art, live demos, and period re-enactors, the organizers of the annual Pigeon Key Art Festival have added one more element — a concert. The Beatlemaniax take the stage on Saturday, Feb. 4, playing from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. “Everyone loves the Beatles,” said festival organizer Jill Snodgrass. “It will be a great little show everyone will enjoy. Guests are invited to enjoy some time with friends and family under the stars.” The concert is free with the price of festival admission ($7). Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs and spread out on the green after the vendor booths have buttoned down for the night. The concessions, beer and wine tents will

remain open. The Beatlemaniax play songs made popular by the “mop-tops” during the “touring years” of 19621966. (Coincidentally, Ron Howard just produced a documentary by the same name, focusing on the same material.) Guests should not, for example, expect to hear anything from the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. “The later songs were composed as studio creations, not to be played live,” said band member Orlin Stoyanov, adding that there is plenty of material to choose from. the music is from that specific period, and often includes the gems found on the “B” side of the albums. The Beatlemaniax are incredibly detail-oriented. The musicians wear reproductions of the suits — “stitch for stitch” — worn by the Fab Four. They play the same brand, same vintage instruments. Band member Jack Maravell plays the violin-shaped, worldfamous, Hofner ’63 bass that Paul McCartney played. Maravell was specifically recruited to the band because he is a left-handed bass guitar player. Because each of the band mates

However, guests who come to the show and make a $7 entrance donation receive a voucher good for a half-price ticket for an island tour within one week of the festival. PIGEON KEY ART FESTIVAL

MINIATURE IN SAND

T

here’s something new at the Pigeon Key Art Festival this weekend — Key West sand sculpture artist Marianne van den Broek is bringing Missouri’s Dan Belcher to Marathon Community Park. Together, they will use 15 tons of sand to recreate the tiny Pigeon Key and the surrounding bridges on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4-5. Guests are welcome to watch the masters at work. “We’re really excited about this. I think we’ll be very close to where Wyland will be working. It should definitely be a very creative vibe,” Van Den Broek said. Van Den Broek organizes the sand sculpture contest in Key West every year over the Thanksgiving weekend. — Sara Matthis

THINGS ABOUT SAND SCULPTURE It’s regular sand. Well, quarry sand. And it’s sifted, too … so maybe not so regular. The special sand’s consistency makes it easy to work into sculptures. The letters sometimes incorporated into a sculpture are cut by hand; no stamps involved. Rain doesn’t really ruin a sand sculpture. The structural foundation is just sand. Artists do pack it firmly, though, so it’s not a fluffy pile of loose grains. The most popular sand sculpting tools are a trowel, a paint knife (spatula) and a paintbrush. And patience.

L

ocal Scouts gathered last weekend to dispatch the Stripes and Stars with dignity. Including state flags, more than 200 old flags were burned in a special ceremony at Oceanfront Park in Marathon. The event was put together by Cub Scout Pack 901 and Cubmaster Frank Westerband. It was attended by the Color Guard; Ariana Patterson sang the national anthem. — Weekly Staff report

3

GEORGE GARRETT/Contributed 1. The crowd formed a respectful circle to watch the flames. 2. The proper way to dispatch a flag — too faded or worn to fly — is to first cut it into pieces before burning it. 3. The local Cub Scout pack has grown exponentially this year and now has more than two dozen members.

MHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 03, 2017

The Marathon Weekly is proud to partner with Marathon Middle School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and MHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Fin Pride.” What organizations and activities are you involved with at MMS and why are they important to you? I am involved in the Student Government Association. It is important to me because our middle school has a voice and we are able to plan activities such as canned food drives and giving back to the people.

Ginger Henderson - Represented the Sellers of 90 Calle Ensueno

Who has been your biggest inspiration at MMS and why? My biggest inspiration has to be my older brother, Adonis. He encourages me to do well in school, read often and study. I look up to him because he follows his dreams and is currently in the Marine Corps.

How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? In today’s world, scientists and creators come up with new, smart technology such as iPhones, iPads and computers. What advice would you give to a sixth grader entering middle school? I would tell them to always put school first, study and don’t stay on your phone because that will just put you behind. Always believe in yourself, and encourage yourself. What movie character do you most identify with or would most like to be? Pocahontas is a strong and independent woman. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Traffic is a problem. We need more traffic lights to make it easier to turn off the highway. What are your plans after high school? My plan after high school is to go to college and study United States law. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me … to always bring sunscreen and enjoy the beach and amazing weather.

Travis W. Bennett, DMD

KELLY SALAZAR EIGHTH GRADE

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I think U.S. civics and history have prepared me for life after high school because I would like to be a lawyer and study law.

To our BUYERS and SELLERS. We hope you enjoy your new homes.

s it a drink or a meal? Who cares! The Bloody Mary at Castaways in Marathon is nothing short of spectacular. Along with the tomato juice and vodka and a rim of spices comes a veritable salad — a peel-n-eat shrimp, crispy bacon, blue cheese-stuffed olive, lime, pickle and lemon. Whew! There are plenty of pairings for the Bloody Mary at the waterside restaurant on the southwest end of town. Look for the snapper BLT sandwich on the specials menu, or pair it with the hogfish “Wreckdiver Style” or the lionfish in white wine basil cream with artichoke hearts, mushrooms, scallions and tomatoes. Over the years, Castaways has also developed quite a reputation with its sushi bar. It has an entire page devoted to the delicacy under such categories as “Extraordinary Sushi Rolls” as well as “Sushi Specials.” The bar features the aforementioned local seafood, plus fresh delicacies such as salmon and giant clam, when available. To find Castaways, turn off on 15th Street, headed toward the ocean, then bear gently to the right on Ocean View Avenue. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 03, 2017 MIKE HOWIE

A

touch of history and a bit of humor can offset the inherent sadness of a graveyard, at least in Key

West. Since before the Civil War, the Key West Cemetery has provided a final place of rest. From simple stones to carved angels to granite obelisks, markers point out the graves of the ordinary and the extraordinary. A cemetery is no typical tourist attraction, but this is no typical cemetery. Anyone can wander through – it’s open daily with no admission charge. But even better: the Historic Florida Keys Foundation offers guided strolls, with interpreters at several gravesites to provide histories that go deeper than carved marble. The first such events of 2017 were this past weekend and at three of the 10 tour stops, the interpreters were family members of the deceased. The $10 fee for these strolls helps fund the foundation’s preservation work. With the help of Jane Newhagen, archivist for the cemetery, here are 10 things you might not know about the Key West Cemetery: • The 19-acre cemetery, which is owned by the city, was created in 1847, after a hurricane on Oct. 11, 1846, destroyed several burial grounds, unearthing bodies and washing them inland. • A freshwater stream runs under the cemetery. There are still a few disconnected pump heads that once provided drinking water for visitors, until health officials decided the water wasn’t safe. • The cemetery is on a flight path for the Key West airport. Between that and the roosters, it is not the quietest place. • The “population” of the cemetery is somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 -- three to four times the living population of Key West. The cemetery is still active. Some 100 burials take place there each year. • The oldest tombstone is that of Capt. James Johnson, who died in May 1829. His grave marker was recovered after the 1846 hurricane. • Monroe County sheriff’s deputy Frank Adams was trying to make an arrest after a brawl on Oct. 7, 1901, when the arrestee’s brother rushed Adams. The two fought, and the assailant took Adams’ service weapon, shooting him three times, killing him. (The attacker, Robert Frank, was cap-

WALKING WITH THE DEAD 10 THINGS ABOUT THE KEY WEST CEMETERY HISTORY

tured and admitted the killing; he was sentenced to life in prison.) The grave of Adams, the first sheriff’s deputy to be killed in the line of duty in Monroe County, was unmarked and undiscovered until 2005. • Sandy Cornish, a former slave who fought off slavers who wanted to capture him and resell him, mutilated his body to make himself useless as a slave. He owned an orchard in Key West and was involved in starting the Cornish Chapel of the AME Church. He died in about 1869 and is buried in the cemetery. The historical foundation has installed a memorial to him on the grounds, but no one knows where his grave is. • The memorial to Benjamin Albury (1806-1863) and his wife Mary (18141890) may have a link to Abraham Lincoln. The marble on the Albury monument may be from the same quarry that supplied the stone for the Lincoln Memorial. • Among others buried there are Richard Moore Kemp, who discovered the species of sea turtle named for him; “Sloppy” Joe Russell; Frank B. Booth, a member of Teddy Roosevelt‘s Rough Riders; and casualties of the 1898 explosions that sank the USS Maine, which led the U.S. to declare war on Spain. • Some of the tombstones lighten the mood, including the famous “I told you I was sick.” That stone, marking the death on June 18, 1979 of B.P. “Pearl” Roberts, is one of several on a small family mausoleum. Just a few feet higher, at the gable of the structure, Gloria M. Russell (1926-2000) notes, “I’m just resting my eyes.” Across the cemetery, the gravestone of Edwina Lariz (1923-1986) declares: “Devoted Fan of Singer Julio Iglesias.”

The next two Key West Cemetery guided strolls are scheduled for Feb. 25 and March 25. More information, including how to register for the strolls, is at historicfloridakeys.org or 305-292-6718.

Top : Keena Allen of the Monroe County sheriff’s department discusses the grave of Frank Adams, the first sheriff’s deputy in Monroe County to be killed in the line of duty. Q: What is YouTube? A: YouTube is a website that features literally millions of video clips on a computer server the size of West Virginia. These video clips are available “on demand,” which means that you direct your web browser to the YouTube.com website, “demand” to see a particular video, and wait patiently for it to start playing in your browser. This should only take 5-10 minutes, depending on whether Comcast’s Internet service is actually working. Q: What if I only have dial-up? A: Please reboot into the 21st Century. Q: How do you find the video you’re looking for? A: You find the video you’re looking for by using YouTube’s “Search” feature. There’s a little “text box” that will allow you to type in “text” to begin the search for your particular video. Q: OMG! R U kdng? A: Not that kind of “text,” imbecile. As an example, let’s say you want to find a video of a performance by Bob Dylan. Q: Why would I want to do that? A: Just play along nicely while we go through the example. Searching the text string “Bob Dylan” shows that there are about 1.7 million relevant videos. Now, not all of them will be actual Bob Dylan videos.

Q: Why is that? A: Because both real professional musicians and wannabes post videos of themselves performing songs by all sorts of artists, like Bob Dylan. Some even just do their own tributes to the artists in question. Q: What’s the worst Bob Dylan tribute on YouTube? A: That would have to be a video from Pepi, who shot himself – with his camera – singing along to a song by the Mandolin Brothers as he was sitting in his car. (www.youtube.com/ watch?v=vXIpug92L1Y) Q: What is that weird string of text between the parentheses? A: That is the URL of the video. It rhymes with hurl, which can be very appropriate after watching some of the videos on YouTube. Q: What is the absolute worst musical video on YouTube? A: That would be a clip from a live performance by a band called, coincidentally, Complete. The song is called “Hoogie-Boogie Land,” and in the genre of Utter Crap, it’s a freakin’ masterpiece. Spark it up, Sparky. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukjnrXTTvPY) Q: What else is there on YouTube? A: Anything you might ever want to see, from inspirational musical and theatrical performances to the utmost in human stupidity – it’s all stored digitally on their mega-server. As an example, there are way too many videos of people touching their tongues to bug zappers. If your parents had an iPhone or camcorder at the maternity ward, chances are your birth has been posted on YouTube. Q: Is there anything I can do to keep the details of my life off of YouTube? A: No. Q: How can I find out more? A: Direct your web browser to YouTube.com and search for anything or anyone you want to see way too much of. Please remember to shower, eat, and sleep now and then when you can pry yourself away from the computer. • • • • • John Bartus plays Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek at the Holiday Inn Express, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, this Friday with Jade Storm at Lorelei in Islamorada, and this Saturday with Adrienne Z and Steven Miller at Holiday Isle Tiki at the Postcard Inn. www.johnbartus.com
