SUPER BOWL is here and for some in this great nation, it’s the day of reckoning— quarterback vs. quarterback, stats, statistics, Vegas odds, coming to a head. Our own office has not gone unscathed, with the boss, Britt Myers, being an Atlanta native and well, let’s just say, others are very “Patriotic.” Some viewers are in it for the supply of feel-good ads and a mesmerizing halftime show (whether good or bad). And for others, well, it’s just a plausible reason to eat bean dip for dinner and drink beer on a Sunday. The event can be many things to many people so we asked locals to finish this sentence ...

Key deer on the radio Tracking will help monitor during fawning season

T

hirty adult female Key deer are now able to “pop” their collars – radio collars, that is. In mid-January, Key deer researchers from Texas A&M University and veterinarians and biologists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service captured and placed electronic tracking collars on Key deer at Big Pine and No Name Keys. The small, lightweight flexible vinyl collars are specially made for Key deer. The collars allow the service to find and monitor these Key deer does more easily now – and more importantly, during the upcoming fawning season – for possible screwworm infestation. Fawning season, which usually starts in March or April, will be a critical time because of how these parasites lay eggs in open wounds, where they hatch and become flesh-eating maggots. Does and fawns are particularly vulnerable during the birthing process. Biologists are checking on these collared does several times weekly. When fawning season begins, they will increase observations to a daily schedule. The deer that have received advanced veterinary care have a number shaved onto their sides for relocation and monitoring. The fish and wildlife service has been visually monitoring these deer, and will continue to do so through the next few months as a sort of welfare check.

Earlier this month, two Key deer, from Big and Little Munson Islands, were confirmed to have been infested with screwworm by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory. One of these was found deceased and the other was euthanized. “We’ve got to be especially vigilant with fawning season coming,” said Dan Clark, Refuge Manager, Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex. “Should fertile screwworm flies be detected or an infested animal confirmed, Key deer does and fawns will be at higher risk. If it happens, we’ll be prepared to move swiftly with preventative treatments and/or other contingency operations already planned and established to protect the subspecies.” The radio collars will also provide data to improve the Service’s ability to estimate the population and identify changes in population numbers. The presence of New World screwworm was confirmed here on Sept. 30, 2016. Since then, the Service has worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Monroe County, and others to eradicate this parasite and protect the endangered Key deer and other wildlife from infestation. — Contributed

OPINION

KEY WEST WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 3, 2017

The People’s Amphitheater

T

he idea of an amphitheater as a component of the Truman Waterfront Park has been in place since the original Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRACC) Plan approved in 1998. On May 1, 1999 (Resolution 99-151) the city voted to apply to the U.S. Department of Interior for a public benefit conveyance, which included backup materials that described an amphitheater being developed “at the center of these open areas for public gatherings, outdoor theatre and concerts, or a series of other uses.” Commissioner Harry Bethel moved to pass the resolution with a second by Commissioner Percy Curry and a unanimous vote by the then City Commission to approve. This was the beginning of the story of the Truman Waterfront Amphitheater. The City has accelerated the implementation of the approval and construction of the Park in 2011, resulting in the approval of the Park Master plan

by Truman Waterfront Advisory Board (TWAB) and the City Commission, acting as the Local Redevelopment Authority (LRA). The Park Master Plan was approved by the LRA both on March 3, 2011 and again on October 15, 2012 and by the TWAB at a joint hearing with the BVRAC on March 19, 2012 and then again on August 20, 2012. In 2015 a Resolution (15-344) was passed to approve the task order for the Truman Waterfront Park Amphitheater design and construction document preparation in the amount of $302,184. And on April 5, 2016 the City Commission voted 6-1 to pass the resolution ratifying the inter-local agreement with the TDC for funding in the amount of $2 million for the Truman Waterfront Park Amphitheater and public parking project. So for almost two decades, the City of Key West has been trying to build an amphitheater for the people of Key West. For almost 20 years, the common factor here is that local government, members of various boards

and committees including TWAB and Bahama Village Redevelopment Advisory Committee and the people they represent have agreed by vast majority to give the residents and visitors of our island community a place where we can share in celebration, be exposed to local performing arts and provide an alternate venue to the taxpayers of our community where we can dance, sing, and experience culture, host non-profit events and fundraisers and just a cool place to hold public or private occasions with endless possibilities. And now, at its pinnacle moment, the construction contract has been granted and we are days from breaking ground, a small minority want to stop the amphitheater. I find it strange that a project 20 years in the making is finally able to come to fruition and a few people think they have the right to take this from our people. This is something for the people of our community and for whatever reasons this small voice may have, it is unfair to punish the majority of our town. Not on my watch. Not while I am Mayor of my hometown. I promised you all I would fight for the people and I will do everything I can to give this gift to our community. You deserve it. Some members of our community or our local government are fixated on how much money this amphitheater will generate. Well, it does have the potential to host at least six major events per year with world renowned headliners and the potential to sell thousands of tickets and generating tens of thousands of dollars per event. But that is if we decide to use it for that. The fact is, it could generate nothing for the City in terms of revenue and that should be okay too. Because our people deserve it — a place where our local Literary Seminar can hold a session under an amazing Key West sunset or our children can put on a holiday program

under a starry night sky. This will truly serve as a community venue. So I invite you all to share your ideas. AIDS Help, maybe this year you would like to increase your revenue from the Headdress Ball and not have to turn guests away due to limited seating? Key West High School, maybe you would like to hold this year’s Christmas Choir Concert in the open air and sing for a crowd of thousands of our residents? Relay for life, are you thinking about how beautiful it would be to honor your cause while circling the beautiful new outdoor area where the community can come support you with parking and accessibility throughout the day? How cool would it be to watch the Zombie Bike Ride end at the amphitheater with a great big finale? Bahama Village Art program, how about a live art auction from the new stage while the Bahama Village Music Program plays? Wedding and event designers, conference organizers, wouldn’t this be a great space to host grand parties or fresh-air training sessions? How about a cooperative yoga session or community fitness effort? Keys Chorale performances, up and coming actors, musicians, and local artists, songwriter’s festivals? I invite you all to share your thoughts and ideas with me and our City staff so that we may start to get a sense of how our community envisions using this amazing gift to our city. You see, this could be a world-class amphitheater for all to enjoy. Mayor Craig Cates City of Key West

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

KEY WEST WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 3, 2017

TURN IT ON

I

t’s the lilt and cadence of Linda Russin’s voice, hard to place, but so distinct and endearing among the media personalities of Key West. Russin, an Oklahoma native, is the recognizable woman behind the news segment that airs daily on Island 106.9, the station she and her husband, Dr. John Russin, have owned since 1995. Why did a surgeon and a businesswoman buy a radio station? Simple: they love music and saw an opportunity to be a part of the business. Russin, who started with a bachelors in language arts from the University of Oklahoma, has taught English and journalism, worked in public relations for Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, as well as advertising. She is accredited in public relations with the Public Relations Society of America and runs a rental company in Hollywood. The media is her forte. Carving out a niche for Island 106.9 as the “new rock alternative,” Russin holds her own when talking about the latest bands, hits, and the over-played as well. Not often does a woman who was named Rotarian of the Year two years ago, reads the Bible every day and is the new coordinator for Relay for Life, listen to Beck. Yea, WOW. Russin is seemingly the opposite of a typical radio personality, quiet in demeanor (no piercings or tattoos either) but she knows her audience. Leaving out politics from her news, she hits the major events and Conch sport highlights, and really does play more music than talk. “It’s a short drive anywhere around the island; people want the local news and to just listen to music,” said Russin. Key West is a radio-rich town, and Russin is part of the gold.

20 QUESTIONS WITH LINDA RUSSIN, OWNER OF ISLAND 106.9 1. Full Name? Linda Kay Hamlin Russin. 2. Worst nickname? Growing up, my family always said I had big feet and a big butt! 3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life, why? Abraham Lincoln. He was a great man who suffered a lot, but did the right thing in outlawing slavery and trying to bring the country together. He also had great faith in God. 4. What question do you hate to answer? How often does your husband come to Key West? (He works in Cooperstown, New York.) 5. Name a performer you secretly love/admire/adore that would surprise people? I like so many performers. But, I have been thinking about my heroes. My heroes are Sam Holland (he started Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood in the 1950s – quite a story.) Also, Jefferson B. Browne, the first president of the Rotary Club of Key West, who later became Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court. My uncle, O.K. Bivins, is a hero. He became the Director of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. He researched names and built a large memorial to peace officers who died in the line of duty in Oklahoma.

6. What’s your favorite TV show or movie about radio? “WKRP in Cincinnati,” of course. 7. If you won the lottery, what extravagant thing would you do? Travel around England and the U.K. 8. Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Kyra Sedgewick in the TV show, “The Closer.” 9. What is your nerdiest passion? College football, and OU football. 10. If you could take one item on a deserted island, what? Why? The Bible, and, of course, WATER. I read a chapter in the Bible every day. 11. If invisible, what would you do in Key West? Go see movies for free. 12. What was your first thought this morning? “It's a good day, the cat is fine, and the radio station is on the air.” (I turn on the radio first thing every morning). 13. Favorite guilty pleasure? Eating steak or prime rib. Drinking alcoholic punch! 14. What misconception do people have about radio? That Sirius/XM/ Pandora/Internet radio has taken over. It hasn't. There are more regular radio listeners now than ever. 15. What dream job would you have? Being an ESPN color sports commentator. I really like stories about people in sports.

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

16. Funniest Key West sighting or story? Trice Denny at the Happy Hour Show on Fridays at Island 106.9. I have to be careful and go to the bathroom before she comes to the station, because she makes me laugh so much. (LOL – PIMP, ask Trice what that means). Finish these sentences.. 17. My family would describe me as … weird. 18. My autobiography would be titled … Never Growing Old. 19. The world needs more … love and caring, of course. 20. When I go, I will go …. “do not go gentle into that good night.” Poem by Dylan Thomas

Fantasy Fest welcomes We’ve Got The Keys New company takes over for 2017 event KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

N

adene Grossman Orr, owner of We’ve Got The Keys, is no stranger to hard work, event planning, or Fantasy Fest. So, when Linda O’Brien of Market Share, the company that previously ran Fantasy Fest, retired in December, Grossman Orr and her team – including art guru Marky Pierson and past Fantasy Fest coordinator Lindsey Sigafoos – was not only a suitable choice, but quite possibly the best choice. We’ve Got The Keys has planned Singer Songwriter Festival, POSH, corporate events, and previously Key West Film Fest. Grossman Orr has also been uber-involved in the community and helps each year collecting thousands of dollars’ worth of items for “Troop Rewards” for veterans who visit Key West after serving overseas. She’s also the 2003 Fantasy Fest Queen, and a mom to an almost 3-year-old. “Nadene was the natural candidate for Fantasy Fest,” said O’Brien, the 27-year Fantasy Fest planner. “Her experience in event planning will serve her well. Nadene will be successful in anything she decides to do. She is a hard worker and a person you can depend upon. I am very pleased the Tourist Development Association Board chose her company.” Grossman Orr said she’s looking forward to the event, and is overwhelmed by the amount of encouragement and support she’s received from the community. “I think the community is just as excited as I am,” she said. She’s filled with good ideas, too, like focusing on the arts community. “Marky’s relationship in particular with the arts community is invaluable,” she said, citing his work with Zombie Bike

Ride and the Papio’s Kinetic Sculpture Parade, among others. “We have opened the door to more community partners and more creativity.” Grossman Orr said she’s happy to consult with the later-evening, lifestyle Nadene Grossman Orr events to help add some panache, and is planning on a separate “after dark” schedule for such events. “We have a few events in the works, and many venues who said they are eager to participate again,” she said. “People will be pleasantly surprised with the lineups.” She also mentioned the Fantasy Fest poster contest will remain, but Pierson has some other creative shirt ideas up his sleeves. “Locals are going to love the shirts,” she said. “They might even buy one.” The 10-day Fantasy Fest takes place the last week in October with the parade this year on Saturday, Oct. 28. The event began in 1979 to boost tourism during a once slow period for Key West.

“I’m very happy to hear Nadene is taking over management of Fantasy Fest and putting together such a talented team to work with her,” said Key West Mayor Craig Cates. “I believe they will bring new enthusiasm and improve the event with all their fresh new ideas.”

SUSANNE EAST-BROOKE keysweekly.com

Leah Orlikowski:

From street to stage

T

hanks to fair weather and a guy named Fairbrother, singer-songwriter Leah Orlikowski has spent the last 10 years making music in Key West. Leah grew up in Conifer, Colorado where she was always around music. Her father, a musician himself, was a big influence, but when she was very young she remembers her grandparents introducing her to a 13-year-old blind Christian singer, and being very impressed that this young girl had a great voice and rose above her challenges. Leah sang with her father a lot. They mainly did folk music, including Janis Joplin, Jethro Tull and Van Morrison. They performed a house concert at a gathering of close friends each year, and Leah was also in her high school choir. It wasn't until age 18 that Leah learned to play guitar, on an instrument her uncle made for her. Her dad taught her some

chords and the first song she learned was Concrete Blonde's “Joey.” Her first job was as a street performer at the 16th Street Mall in Denver where she made the decision to pursue music fulltime. She paid $100 a month to sleep on a couch and was able to record her first album, “Shaking Hands With Love and Death.” In winter 2007, when she could no longer make money on the cold streets of Denver, she headed south. She went to Austin and New Orleans before landing in Key West where, while walking down the street trying to find a busking locale, Ken Fairbrother invited her onstage at Willie T's. She went on to play at Willie T's every day for two straight winter seasons and spent summers in Put-in-Bay, Ohio, where she recorded her second album, “Decide And Conquer.” These days, Leah can be heard as a solo act around town; she also started playing in a trio, with Andy Westcott on guitar and Randy Morrow on drums. The trio can be heard at Sloppy Joe's every other Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. For more, see her Facebook page, LeahMarie Music.

Crisandra serves up Bistro 245’s Sunset Celebration Cocktail for sunsets at Margaritaville Resort. KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Keys Weekly

Sunset Celebration Cocktail is the perfect accompaniment to a Key West sunset. Made with Bacardi O rum, Cointreau liqueur, cranberry juice, fresh squeezed orange juice, served shaken with an orange twist, its colors mimic the setting sun over the horizon at Margaritaville Resort’s pier and Bistro 245. Crisandra, who has been at the resort for two years, said it’s the most popular drink, followed by 90 Miles South and the Catch & Release martinis. She said the lobster quesadilla is a perfect companion to the Sunset Celebration Cocktail. Made with Florida lobster, tomatoes, caramelized onions, cumin, and an assortment of cheeses and salsa, it too highlights the famous Key West sunsets. Crisandra has been visiting the Keys for 15 years. She lists Key West as her hometown, “where the heart is.”

HARVEY COMES TO TOWN Pen and ink drawings on display at Custom House

F

amed maritime artist, scientist, conservationist and explorer Guy Harvey, whose evocative pen-and-ink sketches depicting scenes from Ernest Hemingway’s ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ are exhibited at the Custom House Museum, visited his works on Wednesday. The artist’s visit was a brief stop in Key West with jet-setting patrons Dave and Cheryl Copham, who are both the owners and loaners of the 59 exquisitely detailed pen-and-ink sketches which Harvey created as a teenager over the course of a year while attending boarding school in England. The works were first published in 1999 in the book ‘Santiago’s Finest Hour.’ The Custom House on Front Street is the flagship museum of the Key West Art & Historical Society. I plan on leaving after graduation and going to Orlando for college. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? ehind every good play has to be a good set designer and Michael Boyer is that man at The Waterfront Playhouse. An Illinois native, Boyer is one of those rare breeds who picked a career early in life and stuck to it. As a technical director and scenic designer, Boyer has created set designs for well over 400 productions, adores and credits the people he works with, and loves every minute of it. “I am always thinking about it, gathering ideas and searching for set props,” said Boyer. When he saw someone walking with a grandfather clock, during the Women’s March, he didn’t hesitate to ask for it. “I figured the guy had walked it all the way to Mallory Square and maybe he didn’t want to walk it home?” said Boyer, with the gleaming eye of someone who won a prize. Key West can be limiting for set design. Boyer makes do with minimal secondhand stores, no craft store, limited storage and a constant battle against termites to keep his props. He travels during the playhouse’s off season, searching for period set pieces, and is a constant, savvy online shopper. He works closely with Danny Weathers, managing artistic director at Waterfront, every year to build the perfect “scenario” for the playhouse’s five to six productions. Both theater aficionados have designed previously together at The Tennessee Williams Theater before their 13-year tenure at the Waterfront Playhouse. “Danny hands me the plays during

the summer, and I read and re-read them,” said Boyer. “I make sketches and wait to hear what Danny thinks, but usually we have the same ideas.” Boyer has created sets for plays like “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” “Lend Me A Tenor,” “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “Twelve Angry Men,” “The Glass Menagerie” and “Equus” for the Waterfront and “La Traviata” for Island Opera. He was also the original set designer for Joyce Stahl’s local wonder, “The Nutcracker.” The process starts by researching what the original productions looked like and, as Boyer said, “adapting the play to try to create my own scenes.” For example, Broadway may have room for a two-story building in the playhouse’s upcoming production, “Avenue Q,” but not Waterfront. Boyer will have to make it happen squeezing in buildings and stoops and making way for puppets. Boyer was always interested in set design, with an early career in New York summer stock to teaching set lighting at Southwest Missouri State. “I taught Kathleen Turner and John Goodman everything they needed to know about stage lighting,” laughed Boyer. Well, it worked.

“Everything in the theater is a deadline.” —Michael Boyer, of Waterfront Playhouse

on’t expect the usual jokes about relationships, parenthood or even politics, when comedian Shane Mauss performs at the Key West Theater on Friday, Feb. 10. He is going to talk about drugs. Yes, the great big taboo - DRUGS, psychedelic drugs in particular. Mauss’ show is a trip, pardon the pun, an actual journey into the history and realities of psychedelic drugs. Mauss is a 20-year veteran user and an advocate of psychedelics, calls himself a psychonaut, and simply loves to inform, as well as joke, about them. “The show isn’t just about sharing my experiences,” said Mauss. “I talk about the lengthy history of psychedelics; a lot of it is informational.” Mauss likens the show to a bit of a “Ted Talk” as he goes deeply into the religious, therapeutic, and legal aspects of the drugs as well as his own experimentation. “I think I make a pretty strong case that psychedelics are the least used drug in history and they just aren’t that bad.” But it is a comedy show, so Mauss uses his “big ideas to set up even bigger jokes.” Psychedelics are defined as acid or LSD, magic mushrooms, peyote or mescaline, Ayahuasca or DMT, ibogaine, and salvia. Mauss is open about his usage, and surprisingly, about not using them as a party drug. “I use them alone, to gain insight. It’s meditative for me and I actually get a lot of comedy material.”

Mauss has been a comedian for 13 years and has won the award for Best Stand-Up at the HBO U.S. Comedy Festival. He has appeared on Jimmy Kimmel, Showtime, five times on Conan O’Brian, and has had specials on Comedy Central and Netflix. This show, “A Good Trip,” has been performed in 130 U.S. cities in the past year. “This show gets a response, even if you have never tried psychedelics,” said Mauss. He said audience members have told them his comedy show also is a learning experience. Mauss’ ultimate goal is to demystify the drugs and lift the stigmas. So which is Mauss’ favorite hallucinogen? “I always have really loved mushrooms, and smoking pure DMT is, well, exceptional.” Mauss’ show is sponsored by the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies. Love story – of sorts – returns Fringe Theater brings back ‘Hate Mail’

F

ringe Theater Key West announces the return of its summer show, the offbeat comedy “Hate Mail.” Written by Bill Corbett and Kira Obolensky, the show will run Friday through Sunday, Feb. 3-5. Shows are at 7 p.m., at Little Room Jazz Club, 821 Duval St., Key West.

“Hate Mail” is a love story, of sorts. Star-crossed lovers Preston and Dahlia begin their exchange of letters and notes in a rather antagonistic setting. Their journey takes them through friendship, love, and loss. The play features Pony Charvet and Susannah Wells as the lovetorn duo. Michael Robinson is the production’s musical director, a feature unique to this Key West production. “Music can make the words come alive – especially in a reading,” Robinson said. “The pacing, the mood shifts, even the setting itself can really be impacted by the right song.” Tickets are $25 and are available at www.fringetheater.org or by calling 305-707-4053.

BRIEFLY FKCC VIP chat on tides and currents

Tennessee Williams remembered through April

Florida Keys Community College’s VIP Series of speakers continues with “Tidal, Ocean Current, and River Based In-Stream Hydrokinetic Power Production in the U.S.” on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre. Dr. James VanZweiten will lead this locally relevant and timely presentation. The college is working to unlock the potential of hydrokinetic energy in the Keys through a new degree in Engineering Technology that concentrates on tidal power. Tickets are $5 at the door. Admission is free for students at Monroe County schools.

As part of the 106th birthday celebration of playwright and Key West resident Tennessee Williams, the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit announces a series of public competitions for prose writers, poets, and professional and amateur painters. The submission deadline for the short story writing and poetry contests is March 8 with possible publication in an online journal; the deadline for registering for the plein air painting contest is March 3 and the painting will take place on the morning of March 4 at Tropic Cinema, Eaton Street. An exhibit of the paintings will be held at the Tropic Cinema Gallery. The full details about these public events and registration forms are available at twkw.org. FREEMAN AND ELWELLS RECOGNIZED AT EVENT

The Elwell family was recognized in Key West this past weekend as this year’s American Red Cross of Greater Miami and the Florida Keys Humanitarians of the Year. Shirley Freeman was honored with the Red Cross’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The event is named after Florence Spottswood, who brought the Red Cross to the Keys in 1917, only five years after the railroad arrived in Key West. A

touch of history and a bit of humor can offset the inherent sadness of a graveyard, at least in Key

West. Since before the Civil War, the Key West Cemetery has provided a final place of rest. From simple stones to carved angels to granite obelisks, markers point out the graves of the ordinary and the extraordinary. A cemetery is no typical tourist attraction, but this is no typical cemetery. Anyone can wander through – it’s open daily with no admission charge. But even better: the Historic Florida Keys Foundation offers guided strolls, with interpreters at several gravesites to provide histories that go deeper than carved marble. The first such events of 2017 were this past weekend and at three of the 10 tour stops, the interpreters were family members of the deceased. The $10 fee for these strolls helps fund the foundation’s preservation work. With the help of Jane Newhagen, archivist for the cemetery, here are 10 things you might not know about the Key West Cemetery: • The 19-acre cemetery, which is owned by the city, was created in 1847, after a hurricane on Oct. 11, 1846, destroyed several burial grounds, unearthing bodies and washing them inland. • A freshwater stream runs under the cemetery. There are still a few disconnected pump heads that once provided drinking water for visitors, until health officials decided the water wasn’t safe. • The cemetery is on a flight path for the Key West airport. Between that and the roosters, it is not the quietest place. • The “population” of the cemetery is somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 -- three to four times the living population of Key West. The cemetery is still active. Some 100 burials take place there each year. • The oldest tombstone is that of Capt. James Johnson, who died in May 1829. His grave marker was recovered after the 1846 hurricane. • Monroe County sheriff’s deputy Frank Adams was trying to make an arrest after a brawl on Oct. 7, 1901, when the arrestee’s brother rushed Adams. The two fought, and the assailant took Adams’ service weapon, shooting him three times, killing him. (The attacker, Robert Frank, was cap-

tured and admitted the killing; he was sentenced to life in prison.) The grave of Adams, the first sheriff’s deputy to be killed in the line of duty in Monroe County, was unmarked and undiscovered until 2005. • Sandy Cornish, a former slave who fought off slavers who wanted to capture him and resell him, mutilated his body to make himself useless as a slave. He owned an orchard in Key West and was involved in starting the Cornish Chapel of the AME Church. He died in about 1869 and is buried in the cemetery. The historical foundation has installed a memorial to him on the grounds, but no one knows where his grave is. • The memorial to Benjamin Albury (1806-1863) and his wife Mary (18141890) may have a link to Abraham Lincoln. The marble on the Albury monument may be from the same quarry that supplied the stone for the Lincoln Memorial. • Among others buried there are Richard Moore Kemp, who discovered the species of sea turtle named for him; “Sloppy” Joe Russell; Frank B. Booth, a member of Teddy Roosevelt‘s Rough Riders; and casualties of the 1898 explosions that sank the USS Maine, which led the U.S. to declare war on Spain. • Some of the tombstones lighten the mood, including the famous “I told you I was sick.” That stone, marking the death on June 18, 1979 of B.P. “Pearl” Roberts, is one of several on a small family mausoleum. Just a few feet higher, at the gable of the structure, Gloria M. Russell (1926-2000) notes, “I’m just resting my eyes.” Across the cemetery, the gravestone of Edwina Lariz (1923-1986) declares: “Devoted Fan of Singer Julio Iglesias.”

The next two Key West Cemetery guided strolls are scheduled for Feb. 25 and March 25. More information, including how to register for the strolls, is at historicfloridakeys.org or 305-292-6718.
