O

n behalf of St. Columba Episcopal Church, located at 451 52nd St., Marathon, and the 2017 Florida Keys Celtic Festival Committee, I would like to say thank you to all those who helped us in any way to make the fourth annual Florida Keys Celtic Festival a great success. It takes so many people to make an event such as this happen. This year’s Festival survived some weather issues and emerged as a successful event not only for St. Columba and The Hammock House, but for the entire community as well. The purpose of the Celtic Festival is to provide support to The Hammock House, located at St. Columba, a free after-school and summer camp program for local children. The Hammock House provides nurturing and nutrition to children during times when parents are working and times when school is out of session. It is a no-cost, healthy place for children to thrive emotionally, intellectually, artistically and spiritually. The City of Marathon staff, the Parks Department staff, the press, hundreds of volunteers, members and supporters of St. Columba, sponsors and donors, the vendors, the production company, musicians, technicians, our residents and visitors, and businesses all provided a tremendous and generous support to this effort. We thank each and every one of you and want you to know that we truly appreciate your part in bringing it all together for a great weekend in Marathon. We hope you will continue to take the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the Celtic heritage. The Festival is growing and we are already working on the Fifth Annual Florida Keys Celtic Festival scheduled for January 6-7, 2018. Mark your calendars. I am honored to be a part of this event and again, say thank you for every assistance in making it happen. Sincerely, Loretta Geotis Director Florida Keys Celtic Festival

The “vehicle for hire” business — okay, taxi service — is undergoing a sea change. In yesteryear, you had to know the number for the local cab company. Heck, you had to use a payphone to call them. Now, companies like Uber and Lyft are just a smartphone app click away. Automatically connected to a credit card, the app means users don’t even need cash to get from point A to point B. And, yet, this modern convenience is largely unknown in the Keys. We asked locals ...

Have you ever used Uber?

Now & Zen LOCAL SPA MEMBERSHIP MENU

Chris Kuch, owner of Keys Strength and Conditioning, has a love-hate relationship with Uber. “It’s easy, safe and effective. But when I get the bill, it’s like ‘dang!’”

“My sister uses it in places like Boston and Chicago,” said Jamie Clary. “We always take our car wherever we go. We don’t leave Marathon much.”

We’re pleased to offer the following selection of spa services priced exclusively for our Calm Waters Spa Now & Zen members. Joey Gonzalez wants to try it. “I would like to experience it. We used a cab in New York, and the driver also worked for Uber, so he told us all about it. He was a nice guy.”

“To be honest, I’ve been fortunate enough to own a car since I was 15 years old,” said Kelly Struyf. “I don’t think I’ve ever used a taxi. Maybe once in Las Vegas. That’s it.”

“Yes! Wait, is Marathon considering Uber service? Then throw in a couple of extra ‘yesses’! When we go to the bigger cities, we use it, and we also used it in Germany,” said Meagan Formica, a trainer at Keys Strength and Conditioning.

SURVIVOR SHARES STORY Breaking free from the sex trade Weekly Staff report

A

lyssa Beck is a survivor of sex trafficking who lives in Jacksonville. She will be coming to the Keys this weekend to participate in three meetings organized by Keys Coalition. She will be accompanied by her mother and her 2-month-old baby. The tour was coordinated by the Keys Coalition Against Human Trafficking and marks the fifth anniversary of the group’s founding. “The impetus was our discovery that minors were being marketed for sex in the U.S., not just in third world countries. Until 2011, we never realized how prevalent it was in this country,” said Tim Gratz, acting chair. “Our main purpose is to prevent sex trafficking, primarily through education and awareness.” For those who think it’s not a Keys issue, Gratz said, five minor women, in three separate cases, were transported to the mainland to become part of the trade in recent years. He said it happened via an online advertising site which, “through immense and sustained pressure, has finally been censored.” Beck has discussed her experiences with the Statewide Council on Human Trafficking and she also told us that she has personally worked with Attorney General Pam Bondi on the issue. The Keys Weekly interviewed Beck for a preview of her remarks in the Keys. Keys Weekly: How did you become a victim? Alyssa Beck: At the age of 15, I met a girl in a rehab facility my parents put me in for my use of marijuana. I really admired her and wanted to be like her, so when she asked me if I wanted to run away with her I automatically said yes, not knowing that she was already caught in the sex trade. After being on the streets with her for two weeks, I was taken by a man I had only met once before. He held me hostage in a seedy hotel room and allowed men to pay him $20 for a piece of my innocence. KW: How did you escape? AB: After a few weeks of being held hostage in the hotel room, I lost all hope. I wanted nothing but to die or be free. I remember praying to a God I thought couldn't exist, saying, "If you're really there, please HELP ME!" About 24 hours later I came up with a brilliant idea. I convinced my trafficker that I

was in love with him and knew somewhere we could "make a lot of money" if he just took me there. He reluctantly agreed. He took me to this place and I ran; he found me … beat me and told me he was going to kill me, but I didn't give up fighting and within an hour, I was free. KW: What can be done to fight trafficking? AB: I run into people all the time who don't know what human trafficking is, or they just compare human trafficking to the movie “Taken.” People think it doesn't happen in their country. The scary thing is that it happens not only in their country, but their state, city, and even in their neighborhood! The only way we can break the cycle of the sex trade is by becoming educated on what human trafficking REALLY is. My goal is to put a face to human trafficking and hope that in doing so people will begin realizing it can happen to anyone. The truth is human trafficking has no age, name, or race. And until we realize this, human trafficking will continue to destroy our country, cities, and communities.

TO REST WITH RESPECT Cub Scouts host flag retirement ceremony SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

T

here’s a half-full collection box at Marathon City Hall, another at The Home Depot and four at the American Legion. Hundreds of U.S. flags have been languishing in closets all over the Middle Keys. Now they are being collected for a ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Oceanfront Park. Curry Hammock State Park Manager Ken Triosi handed over 15 flags. “We had five U.S. flags, five state flags and five POW flags that had been stored in an office,” Triosi said. “We raise and lower our flags every day. As soon as we notice any kind of damage, we replace them.” The ceremony is being put together by Cub Scout Pack 901. Cubmaster Frank Westerband said about 200 flags have already been collected. He said the project grew out of a need identified by Boy Scout Dante Senmartin.

“It will probably develop into his Eagle Scout project. One young man saw a problem and is trying to fix it,” Westerband said. The ceremony allows the flag — the highest and best emblem of the United States of America — to be retired with dignity. First, the flag will be cut into quadrants. Then, the Scouts explain the flag’s symbolism before burning the pieces in a bonfire. The ceremony will also feature the national anthem, a professional bugler, and a 21-gun salute from the Color Guard. The public is invited to watch. Oceanfront Park is located behind Marathon City Hall between 99th and 98th streets, oceanside.

When the Stars and Stripes become faded, tattered and worn, it’s time to retire the flags with dignity.

BRIEFLY Volunteers needed for Pigeon Key Art Festival The 23rd annual Pigeon Key Art Festival is putting out the call for volunteers to fill more than 200 three-hour shifts on Friday through Sunday, Feb. 3-5 at Marathon Community Park. The event supports the Pigeon Key Foundation's marine science educational programs for children from all over the country. Volunteers receive free admission to the festival, a special T-shirt and free admission to the Beatlemaniax concert Saturday, Feb. 4. Help is needed for hospitality, vendor support, logistics, entry gates, parking and several other areas.

To register for one or more shifts, visit www.PigeonKeyArtFestival.com or contact Sean Krikorian at 573-6192200. Comedy show at American Legion Two comedy shows will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 7 and 9 p.m. at the American Legion in Marathon. Tickets are $12 each and can be bought in advance at the post – last year the show sold out. The money raised will help local veterans and the event is open to the public.

The ART of the Pigeon Key Festival SARA MATTHIS

sara@keysweekly.com

“Something that I saw with my mind’s eye.”

CREATIVITY COMES TO TOWN The 23rd annual Pigeon Key Art Festival features more than 70 fine artists from the Keys, the state and beyond to show their works Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4-5 in Marathon. In addition to the art in every medium, organizers have also planned food and beverage sales, entertainment, and children’s activi-

TERRILYNN Key West

T

erriLynn Seargent is the official poster artist for the festival in 2017. She knew exactly what she wanted to feature. “I was crossing the bridge and the sun was low in the sky. And that little house on Pigeon Key was yellow as it could possibly be. It was so gorgeous, over the top gorgeous!” TerriLynn said. “I grabbed my camera and clicked off ten or fifteen photos. You have to grab that moment; otherwise you’ll lose it.” TerriLynn has gradually migrated south until landing fulltime in Key West a few years ago. She is a photographer and, more recently, a digital artist. She essentially uses the computer to paint from a photo. “I catch a moment in time with my camera, and then I add lots of bright and bold colors,” she said. “It’s like creating something that you saw with your mind’s eye.” Indeed, the colorful images have a dreamlike quality, a filter of kindness and happiness overlaid on common Keys sights — a bicycle propped against a fence, fishing boats returning to harbor, and wildlife. The works are then printed on waterproof canvas in the giclée method. “Everything becomes a limited edition that I sign and number,” she said. Her works range from 12- by 18-inches to 16- by 30-inches, although commissioned pieces can be as big as four by six feet. Prices for the smaller works range from $100 to $400.

ties. Of course, noted marine artist Wyland will also make an appearance to paint live and then auction his creations. At the Marathon Community Park, the public swarms the lawns to see the best artists, culled from a juried selection process to attract the best and brightest. It’s all about the art.

“It’s as if the glass designs itself.”

JUNE POWELL Naples

A

TerriLynn / ‘Reflections’

June Powell / ‘Lunar’

lthough currently residing on the west coast of Florida, June Powell is a former resident of the Middle Keys. She lived in the Keys in the late ’70s and ’80s and worked as a medical technologist and then lab manager; her daughter Shannon Butler still lives in town. June found her artistic talent later in life after retiring. “I started with stained glass and then moved on to glass fusing,” said June, “and fell in love. I just love it.” With a new studio and bigger kiln, she is creating larger works. Some of the vessels — decorative bowls or vases — can weigh more than five pounds. “They are more sculptural than practical,” she said of her works that are fantastic layers of transparent and semi-transparent color and light, each with minute details that tell a story. “One of the things I love is that the glass finds its own direction of flow. I never know what will greet me when I open the kiln. It’s as if the glass designs itself.” June said she begins with sheet glass and a thick layer of dichroic glass (high-tech material covered with thin metal film to create a rainbow sheen). Then she adds pre-fused elements — frits, rods and stringers. The pieces go to the kiln for four separate firings for a total of seven days. June’s booth will feature the elaborate vessels, plus trinket dishes and some jewelry as well. Her vessels are priced at $685 to $835.

Seashell Designs by Dorothy McQueen After living in Marathon for the past 31 years and shell collecting ever since, Dorothy McQueen opened Seashell Designs creating one of a kind wedding accessories. Pieces include seashell bouquets, boutonnieres, centerpieces, and island or beach home decorations. “I came up with the idea to take my love of diving and shell collecting and make a business out of it,” said McQueen. “Since Marathon is the perfect spot for destination weddings, I decided seashells creations were the way to go.” Each design is made by hand and with love. She also makes shell ring holders for the ring bearer, and tropical barrettes for flower girls. She can even create the perfect ring holder for a special engagement on the beach. “Instead of having to throw all the flowers out after the wedding, you will have something that can be put into a vase and remembered forever,” she said comparing fresh flower and seashell design prices. “One look at my creations and you will never look at flowers the same again.” Location: 5701 Overseas Highway, Suite 2 (inside Keys Hairmasters) Phone Number: 305-393-1838 Website: seashelldesignsbydorothy.com Email: dbmcqueen@yahoo.com

S

tate dive team members are training with Keys law enforcement dive team members. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is part of the Joint Agency in-Water Strike (JAWS) team, a partnership with Florida State University Panama City, Bay County sheriff and Panama City Fire Department. Florida State has the equipment but not the staff for a team like JAWS, which specializes in water-based criminal investigations. Law enforcement agencies, like the FWC, have the staff but not the equipment. Through the agreement, FSU Panama City dive instructors have trained FWC dive teams and given them access to equipment, which kickstarted the agency’s now-thriving dive program. The FWC now has three fully functional dive teams, in the South Bravo, Southwest and Northwest regions. FWC South Bravo dive team members will train and cooperate with the existing Monroe County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team and the Key West Police Department’s Dive Team to provide public safety dive team services. The FWC dive team could be called in to do anything from finding a discarded weapon, investigating offshore incidents, a plane crash, diving accidents or body or evidence retrieval. SRB Dive Team members are lieutenants Liz Lyne, Manny Pomares and Ryan Smith; investigators Andy Cox and Paul Hein; and officers Glen Way, Chris Mattson and Courtney Baumgartner. — Contributed

HEAL BY MEAL Four-week plan reboots eating habits

C

ertified Raw Food Chef Beth Nagle Griffin and Food For Thought, Marathon’s health food market and organic café, are offering “Seed, Sprout, Bloom!,” a fourweek program of self-rejuvenation based on the Hippocrates Health principles. “I call myself a ‘healing meals mentor,’” said Nagle Griffin. The focus of her work is rejuvenation and healing through the restorative power of enzyme-rich, live foods. “The benefits of including more live, plant-based foods into your meals include weight loss, increased energy, increased immunity, and positive frame of mind,” said Nagle Griffin, who is a parttime resident of Marathon. Nagle Griffin said it serves everyone, whether they like to eat cooked foods or raw foods, are new to eating plant-based foods or are an experienced 'veg-head' looking for a reboot. The program includes: • Step-by-step instruction on how to make plant-based meals at home fast, easy and delicious. • Meal-planning coaching, including how to transition the family to plant-based meals, through weekly live demonstrations, instruction and discussion. • Facebook support: Participants will be supported throughout the week via a private page. (“That way, you're never left alone when that ice cream is calling well after dinner.”) • Discounts on local therapeutic services such as Healing Touch and Raindrop Therapy, and a once-a-week “living lunch box” and discount on juices and wheat grass shots from Food For Thought.

• Psychic medium Mark Griffin will offer the first six registrants a free 30-minute spirit reading, which he said will connect them with their loved ones in spirit or a psychic reading to help with guidance in one's life. The program begins on Thursday, Feb. 2 and will meet on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Food for Thought in the Gulfside Village. The cost for the four-week program is $295 per person. MONROE COUNTY

WAITING FOR A RIDE

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 27, 2017

Is local gridlock costing us?

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

The Keys are congested, and unlike the common cold, this congestion is not going away. Undeniably, Keys residents and tourists are fed up with the seasonal influx of cars, the bumper-to-bumper traffic and high cost of taxis. Public sentiment is growing for a solution to the transportation infrastructure and crying out for ridesharing services. According to a Key West city report by Mary Bishop called “Toward Car Free Key West,” traffic congestion is listed as the No. 1 complaint by residents; 82 percent of tourists are arriving with a vehicle. While being totally “car free” is not likely, a solution could lie in allowing popular Transportation Network Companies or TNCs — like Uber and Lyft — to step in and bear the burden of personal transportation. Ride sharing, now popular in all major U.S. cites, is the modern movement of green-ish transportation. Around the country, TNCs’ rates are significantly lower than regular taxi rates. No one, including city leaders, wants to push out friends and neighbors who are professional taxi drivers. But the picture is becoming much more complicated. Some locals are driving themselves rather than paying taxi costs. And consumers of the $2 billion Keys tourist industry have expressed surprise at the lack of modern ride sharing. Reticence for allowing TNCs within city limits is about regulations. If taxis have to be licensed and pay taxes, shouldn’t a TNC? And what about background checks for drivers, and vehicle inspections? How much should drivers be insured for, when personal auto insurance doesn’t cover a car for hire? Different TNC companies have different regulations. Should Keys municipalities create uniform restrictions? If so, the time is now.

STATE OF FLORIDA

MONROE COUNTY

KEY WEST

he Florida legislature is about to make a statement on the legality of TNCs with upcoming bills SB340 and HB221. Come spring, state legislators could enact laws which will supersede any local ordinance or law and allow TNCs on the streets, subject to regulations written by the state, and not local municipalities. Without any grandfathered laws, Keys officials may not have a say about how TNCs operate within county or city limits. While ride-sharing doesn’t seem to be a big issue for unincorporated Monroe County, it’s somewhat a concern in Marathon, and a big issue in Key West. “There needs to be some leveling of the playing field,” said state Rep. Holly Raschein. “Everyone needs to come to the table. Taxis need to modernize and ride sharing companies need to compromise with the needs of the cities.”

urrently, the county has 322 taxi business licenses on the books — but this is more accurately a tax. The $22 fee is paid to the Monroe County Tax Collector. There are no other rules on the books in Monroe County governing how taxis operate or background checks for drivers. The Board of County Commissioners raised the issue at its December meeting. County Attorney Bob Shillinger said the county has the authority to limit taxi numbers, rates and fees in the unincorporated county. Other than directing staff to work with the Tax Collector on how to register ride-sharing drivers, the board decided to hold off until the state weighs in.

enying ride-sharing is not good for our economy, locals or tourists,” said Key West Commissioner Sam Kaufman. “Locals would have a cheaper way of accessing downtown without having to pay to park, and without a car they may use the circulator bus more around town. Also, we may not need to spend millions building not one but two parking garages in old town. And for the tourists, having to rent a car daily could affect (whether) they pick the Keys for their vacation.” Vehicle-for-hire taxi licenses have been limited, costly and hard earned by Key West taxi companies and drivers. Resident drivers have dominated commissioner meetings, expressing their heartfelt opposition to new, outside competition. City regulation on vehicle-for-hire licenses has always safeguarded the taxi profession but conversely has also allowed a monopoly on taxi costs. “I have an issue with piecemealing our transportation plan,” continued Kaufman. “Since when have we allowed Tallahassee to influence our decisions?” Kaufman’s concern is putting regulations for TNCs on the books now to help with the eventual introduction and regulation of ride sharing companies in Key West. From Stock Island to Key Largo, ride sharing is legal and largely unregulated. Maybe it’s time to stop the gridlock, from every angle. Currently, there are 72 taxis, 10 vans, and 12 limos operating in Key West. Taxi companies reportedly pay $200,000 per medallions traded in the private sector, and $125 for each vehicle per year. Every two years, Key West Commissioners assess the supply and demand of taxis and award new rights via a lottery. It’s difficult to know how to protect the “property rights” of existing taxi companies in the face of such a technological sea change. It’s not unlike the death of Blockbuster brought about by Netflix.

T

UBER DRIVERS: Uber drivers must be 21 years or older, have a valid driver’s license, submit to a criminal background check, and have no history of major accidents or any DUIs. The vehicle must be a newer model car, inspected (Uber will provide its own inspection form and, in certain cities, Uber inspection sites). Drivers must have proof of personal car insurance, but Uber will provide the $1 million liability insurance. Uber drivers are personal contractors and are responsible for gas, tolls, maintenance and taxes of the vehicle.

C

UBER RIDES Download the Uber app to your smartphone and register with a credit card. When you need an Uber, enter a destination and Uber will provide the nearest driver. You will see wait time, size of car (request small or large size) and price of trip. Also, you will see name, vehicle type and license plate of selected driver. GPS is used to track all cars, so a driver’s location is always known. No cash is necessary as the fee will automatically be charged to your credit card. Tipping is on a voluntary basis and not required. Drivers and riders can be rated to help weed out inappropriate conduct.

MONROE COUNTY

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 27, 2017

“If the state approved, as soon as the Governor signs the bill, Uber or other companies could be here the next day whether anybody likes it or not.”

—Key West Commissioner Sam Kaufman

MARATHON

I

n 2013, before ride-sharing services were insanely popular, Marathon took pains to address its “passenger vehicles for hire” law. The council passed a law requiring taxi companies to register with the city, as well as registering vehicles and drivers. The taxi companies must register and pay $300 for a two-year license (each additional vehicle and each additional driver is another $50), show proof of insurance and a valid driver’s license. There is no background check. Currently, there are 13 companies registered to provide taxi service in Marathon and 53 registered vehicles. Mayor Dan Zieg said there is no current discussion about writing laws specific to ride-sharing. “I don’t see us doing that,” Zieg said. “I don’t have an opinion one way or another. My sons who live up north use the service, and they love it.” However, city staff is researching how other municipalities regulate taxi companies. As the law stands in Marathon, there is no mechanism for enforcement — code enforcement officers cannot pull over a taxi they suspect is operating illegally. Also, current Marathon law requires taxi drivers to have a business address, properly zoned, that would preclude most ride-sharing drivers. UBER FARES: Fares are calculated by adding a base fare (if applicable) + time and distance rates. Riders are also charged a booking fee ($1 or $2).

“There is concern and talk about the taxi situation at the state level, but we just don’t know the end result yet. The state loves to pre-empt municipalities, so it’s always a struggle to provide more resources for the public.” —State Representative Holly Raschein

ISLAMORADA

C

urrently, there is no ordinance addressing taxi or ride sharing services in Islamorada. Councilman Mike Forster said the village is waiting for Monroe County to implement rules and regulations. “If it looks good, we’ll follow suit and adopt their regulations. As far as I know, we have one Uber driver in Islamorada, and only one taxi driver who came from Key Largo to complain,” said Forster. “Until it becomes an issue, it’s not an issue. It makes sense to wait to see what the commissioners and councils decide.” — Sara Matthis and Gabriel Sanchez contributed to this report.

LIVING AVIATION HISTORY Vintage aircraft coming to Marathon

F

or fans of vintage aircraft, this is the place to be for the next couple of weeks. Four World War II vintage airplanes – three bombers and a fighter – will arrive next week in Marathon. Soon after, a plane that defined luxury in the 1920s – and that has had cameos in movies spanning decades (with stars Jerry Lewis in one and Johnny Depp in another) – will touch down. The Collings Foundation’s 110-city Wings of Freedom tour will bring a vintage Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator, North American B-25 Mitchell and P-51 Mustang to the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport from Monday, Jan. 30 to Feb. 2. In mid-February, the Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) immaculate 1929 Ford Tri-Motor will arrive as part of a national tour, offering an opportunity for passengers to experience flight aboard the world’s first mass-produced airliner. The Tri-Motor or the “Tin Goose” was first built by the Ford Motor Company in the late 1920s. EAA’s Ford Tri-Motor was constructed in 1929 and has an intriguing history, with roles ranging from service as Cuban airliner to extensive background fighting forest fires while transporting smoke jumpers. The aircraft also made a celebrity appearance in two major movies—1960’s “Family Jewels” starring Jerry Lewis and 2009’s “Public Enemies” starring Johnny Depp.

EAA’s Tri-Motor can carry up to nine passengers at a time, and every seat has a window. Passengers are encouraged to bring a camera to record and share this experience. Tickets purchased in advance are $70 for adults; walk up tickets are $75 and $50 for children 17 years old and under. The aircraft will visit Marathon from Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 16-19. Booking is available at http://FlytheFord. org, EAA’s Tri-Motor tour website or at 800-843-3612. The World War II aircraft tour is scheduled to arrive at noon on Monday, Jan. 30, departing after noon exercises on Thursday, Feb. 2. Hours of ground tours and display are: • Noon to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30; • 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 • and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Feb 2. Visitors may explore the aircraft at a price of $15 for adults and $5 for those under 12. Thirty-minute flights are available for $400 and up, depending on the aircraft; they are normally scheduled before and after the ground tour times. For reservations and information on flights, call 800-568-8924 or visit www.collingsfoundation.org. — Contributed

very year, Pantone, the global color authority, selects a color of the year which influences fashion and design trends for the year ahead. Pantone recently announced its selection for 2017, a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade called Greenery. Designers including Emilio Pucci, Lacoste and Gucci all used this tone in their 2017 spring collections. From an interior design perspective, decorating your home in Greenery is a great way to bring the outdoors in. Paint a wall in this revitalizing shade or add it to a room through artwork, throw pillows and accents. Enliven your space by adding this shade into your environment through leafy plants and succulents. Called nature’s neutral, Pantone Greenery is a versatile color that in fashion can be worn year-round. Pair it with neutrals such as white, tan, black or gray or with similar vibrant tones such as brights, jewel tones, and metallics. My favorite pairing of this color is with bold prints. The spring 2017 runways were filled with prints in Greenery. Michael Kors embraced Greenery in a vintage-inspired blue, white and leafy green floral dress with a vibrant green colored vest worn over top. Max Mara used Greenery in a tropical print with black accents, and Balenciaga designed a dress with a bold print reminiscent of the ‘70s with orange, purple and red florals on a vibrant green backdrop. This spring, surround yourself with the color of nature by wearing, applying and redecorating with the color Greenery.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 27, 2017

M

ike Walsh grew up in New Jersey (though he tries not to admit it) just outside New York City. At a young age, he shredded as a competitive wake boarder and tried his hand at a few other board sports. After high school, he moved to Long Beach Island in South Jersey and started working in a surf shop. It was there that he met his wife; the two worked together for years before Cupid struck. In that time, he learned the ins and outs of operating a surf shop. After scouting the East Coast for the ideal place to call home, again it was time to migrate south. (He’s fairly accustomed to island life, however, having lived in Maui, Hawaii.) In 2006, the Walshes moved to the Upper Keys with the dream of opening their own shop. After a few years of dreaming, saving, and planning, the two opened Otherside Boardsports, 82758 Overseas Hwy., Islamorada. What are some board sports you grew up doing, and what GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

do you ride now? Competitive wake boarding, snowboarding, surf, a lot of other sports as well, like mountain bikes – I raced motocross, and dirt biking. Now it’s mostly kite boarding and when it’s not windy, I hit the cable park. Who is your favorite board sport or extreme sports athlete? Kai Lenny. His family are extreme watermen from Maui. Even more than just his ability it’s his presence. He’s chill, positive and always has a smile. Even though he knows he’s great, he remains humble. Danny Hampson is also an insane wake skater – not only how he rides on a wake skate, but he can throw down on a wakeboard too. Skate videos have always been popular among dedicated riders.

Which is your all-time favorite? I like the older stuff. The skate company Girl’s Yeah Right video. The video used green screens to make the boards invisible; it was pretty cool. What is the most important lesson you would like to pass on to your kids? My son is my best friend. He’s my mini and does everything I do. I tell him to not take anything too seriously and not be afraid to work. Just be personable with everyone. What’s the gnarliest trick you’ve stuck? It happened when I was kiting in really large waves off Kanaha Harbor in Maui. I paddled out and go to drop in on the back side of a wave, until I looked down. I turned around to drop out and the next wave was stacking up behind it. So I was forced into it, and dropped into a 20 foot wave in Maui. It’s not really technical but there’s a lot of consequence. It gives you the same feeling. Who has encouraged you to pursue your dreams the most? My wife, hands down. She’s been with me since day one, we worked together for a lot of our years together. She is 100 percent my support and the reason I want to keep it growing. She’s the mastermind behind all of it; I’m just the janitor. What motto do you relate to consistently? Have fun. If you’re not having fun, you’re doing something wrong. Have any pet peeves? I have a bunch of them. Unappreciative or entitled people. Any phobias? Scorpions. I don’t do scorpions. Have any hidden abilities or odd talents? Nothing I can mention in the paper. Describe the perfect meal. I like simple. One of my favorite dishes is fish, rice and vegetables. Or like medium rare steak with a potato. Which form of comedy is the best? One-liners. Toilet humor is good. Where is your favorite place to relax? I don’t know; I don’t get to do that. I’d say in a hammock.

20 Questions: Mike Walsh

What is the simplest way to make a difference in the environment? Leading by example and education. If I can get other people to recycle their stuff or modify their way of life. What is your favorite movie and why? The Beach. It was idealistic at the time. When it came out, I was single and traveling. It just seemed ideal. If you could wake up with one special ability, what would it be? My son and I have this discussion all the time. We have it narrowed down to two: flying and having gills. Jersey gets a bad rap. What’s one positive thing about Jersey? It’s actually beautiful when you’re not near the cities. It has mountains and the largest pine forest in North America. Favorite music, band, or genre of music? Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails is ridiculous. You have a threemember wolf pack. Who’s in it? Moon, Matt, and my wife Shana. What’s your spirit animal? Probably a caveman.

T

iffani is no stranger to The Hurricane, after working there for the past eight years and growing up in Marathon. A member of Marathon High School Class of 2008, she said she loves the Keys because it's home and where her family lives. She said the most popular drink at The 'Cane, as it's affectionately known, is, of course, The Hurricane. "I'd have to kill you if I told you the ingredients," she said, of the original recipe. Unable to divulge the ingredients in full, she did say it has Bacardi Rum, Gosling’s, and a mixture of special fruit juices. Tiffani said you can't beat the pizzas at The Hurricane, which are baked in a stone oven. She is partial to the buffalo chicken pizza and general manager Hal said his favorite is the pepperoni, onion and sausage. "I really love the new owners," she said, citing the staff and customers as highlights of her job. "It's a really fun place to work again." When she isn't bartending, she is spending time with her 2-year-old daughter, Aria. Their favorite places to hang out are at the pool and Rotary Park. The Hurricane is located at 4650 Overseas Hwy., and they also offer delivery of those pizzas by calling 305-743-2220.

We thank our future leaders and MHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Fin Pride.” What organizations and activities are you involved with at MHS and why are they important to you? I play basketball and baseball. They are important to me because I get to spend time with my teammates and coaches. Who has been your biggest inspiration at MHS and why? Mr. Gonzalez has been my biggest inspiration because he is always there for me. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? The class that has best prepared me for life after high school is math. We use it for real-world problems. How is today’s world different than the one your parents or guardians grew up in? In today’s world there is more technology than before. I think things were harder back then. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Be a good student, play sports, be on time and keep up the good grades. What celebrity do you most identify with or most like to be? The person I identify with most is Kevin Durant, because I like basketball. If you could advise the president of the United States on one thing, what would it be? To give immigrants better rights. What are your plans after high school? I want to go to college and become a professional. Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me … that living in a small community brings us together.

BRIEFLY United Way offers grants

Joe Kinosian, foreground, and Noel Carey in ‘Murder for Two’

For Everyone, An Instant Comedy “Murder for Two” Plays at The Red Barn Theatre HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

“M

urder For Two,” playing at the Red Barn Theatre, is a mesmerizing, delightfully implausible, old-fashioned good time. Imagine a full-production play with a dozen characters and musical score, but only performed by two actors. The charismatic leads are the playwright himself, Joe Kinosian, and Noel Carey, who bring to life the full-fledged musical comedy whodunit murder mystery all on their own. The actors command every inch of the stage in a precisely choreographed off-kilter comedy that is as inventive as it is entertaining. Understanding the cadence of the play takes a few minutes, but after the rhythm reveals itself, settle back and enjoy the show. Policeman Marcus Moscowitz, an overly enthusiastic wannabe detective played by Noel Carey, bumbles through a murder investigation of a high profile novelist while surrounded by a variety of suspects. Each suspect, with distinct visible and character traits, is portrayed by the talented Kinosian. With comedic timing and

physical comedy comparable to classic John Cleese, Kinosian instantaneously switches from a ballet dancer to an un-bereft widow, a wily psychiatrist to a falsetto teenage girl. His skill at creating believable, humorous characters is downright convincing, fascinating and a joy to watch. It’s as if Carey is the maypole that Kinosian dances around, weaving rapid-fire plot and suspense. Both actors take turns at the piano and burst into song underscoring the play’s layered skill and masterly production. Opening night in Key West was Kinosian’s 569th time performing his hit “Murder for Two.” He has been performing and reworking the play since 2009. It has been produced around the world, and the biggest difference among venues, Kinosian said, is “adjusting to the size of the stage, which is always a challenge.” He is referring to The Red Barn Theatre’s most endearing quality, the intimacy between stage and audience, which Kinosian seamlessly mastered. “Murder for Two” has been called “Ingenious!” by the New York Times. Critics around the country have hailed it as one of the best contemporary OffBroadway musicals, calling it a “tour de force” and “vaudeville style romp” – and Key West is lucky to have the show stop here. “We are delighted and thrilled to bring in out-of -town talent to augment local talent,” said Mimi McDonald, Managing Director of the Red Barn, “We jumped on the opportunity to have them.” “MURDER FOR TWO” RUNS UNTIL FEB 11, 2017 www.redbarntheatre.com for showtimes and tickets
