BOAT SHOW AT HAWKS CAY

The three-day event features test rides in the waters around Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key, at MM 61. JASON STEMPLE/SE Multimedia LLC

More than 40 brands on display, in and out of water Weekly Staff report

L

ocals have a chance to try out top-quality boats this weekend at Hawks Cay Resort. “It’s so popular with Keys residents compared to the Miami or Fort Lauderdale boat shows. You don’t have the hassle and the crowds and it’s less hectic, even for the boat dealers,” said Capt. Rich Tudor. Yes, that Capt. Rich Tudor — tournament winner and television producer of “Saltwater Experience.” The boat show runs from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22. There will be more than 80 boats on display — in the water and on the hardtop —

featuring more than 40 brands from all the top dealers in the Keys. Some boats will be available for test rides, as well, and there’s a raffle for a brand new Everglades boat. In addition, to the “eye candy” there will be fishing, freediving and spearfishing seminars running all day long in the Hawks Cay Resort ballroom, plus dozens of vendors selling everything from tackle to speargear to jewelry and art. Check out the silent auction inventory — Yeti coolers, charters and more are up for grabs from the highest bidder. The event will also feature seminars by top anglers and spearfisherman including Capt. Rich Tudor, Capt. Tony Melton and Hadrian Vega. The boat show is a benefit for Island Christian School and the suggested donation for admission is $10. Save the admission ticket for 10 percent off the bill at Angler & Ale right next door. More information is at islandboatshow.com.

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 20, 2017 GABRIEL SANCHEZ

gabriel@keysweekly.com

Since 1995, the “Wet Foot, Dry Foot” policy the United States has taken toward Cuba has epitomized what the American dream meant for our neighbors to the South. For the Cubans who fled their country, the journey of making it to dry land and obtaining instant immigration status was perilous. Many made it; some did not. Following the Obama administration’s normalization of political relations with Cuba, a large number of immigrants flocked to the Keys’ shores. Now, that policy is over, and Cubans will have to use the same immigration procedures as every other foreigner. Its immediate impact will be felt in the Florida Keys, so the Weekly asked locals…

How do you feel about ‘Wet foot, dry foot’ ending? “Personally I think it’s good. They needed to better organize the laws behind it. It really made no sense to me before,” said Fabio Matos.

WATERFRONT HANDYMAN SPECIAL “It’s a good thing,” said George Eigner of Fish Tales. “I don’t see how we could have continued doing that; there wasn’t equality amongst all immigrants due to the policy.”

“I think it’s good they ended it. I know a lot of people who spend a lot of money to become American citizens and it’s not fair to them that a person can just make it to dry land and call it their new home,” said Morgan Gotti.

“I don’t have any thoughts on it yet; it’s too soon to tell its impact,” said Stephanie Lowery.

LOL!

The gig was booked through Comedy Machine, established in 2004 in California. “Our brand of comedy is PG-13ish,” said Steve Jameson of the agency. “We want people to leave happy, without being offended. That’s our brand of comedy.”

Lenny Travis lives on the mainland but his comedic reach extends to Showtime and A&E. He will perform on Saturday, Jan. 28 in Marathon. CONTRIBUTED

an encore? Add more comedy. Comedian Lenny Travis will headline the comedy night on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the American Legion. He said the gig came personally recommended. “My buddy Perry, who is also a comedian, called me up and said ‘You’re going to love this place,’” said Travis, explaining how he came to be one of three headliners at the comedy night on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the American Legion. The event met with such success its first year, organizers have added a second show. “We were turning people away last year,” said Derrick Johnson, American Legion adjutant and vice commander. “We sold out.” Travis will join comedians Andy Kern and Steven Briggs. Briggs tours the country and has a featured spot on Sirius XM. Kern has appeared on VH1 and Comedy Central. Travis … well, he wrote jokes for Rodney Dangerfield at the tender age of 18. Dangerfield paid $50 a joke.

Andy Kern

“Every single joke was about sex or drugs,” said Travis, laughing. “I caught his act ten years later and he was still using them. Boy, he really got his money’s worth.” Travis has also written for Jay Leno and Rosie O’Donnell and appeared on Showtime, A&E and Fox. Travis is a New York transplant, who has found a mine of new material in ‘Floriduh.’ (“My parents live in Century Village retirement home. I wander around wondering ‘What century?’”) Proceeds from the event benefit American Legion scholarships and the service club’s general fund. The 90-minute shows start at 7 and 9 p.m. Tickets are $12 and available at the American Legion at 4115 Overseas Highway, Marathon.

live auction of drawings created on the spot by marine artist Wyland. A 15-ton sand sculpture of the Seven Mile Bridge and Pigeon Key. A Beatles tribute band. And dozens of artists and craftsmen selling their work. The Pigeon Key Art Festival will bring this and more to Marathon in February. The 23rd annual festival will be Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4 and 5, at the Marathon Community Park, MM 49. The festival is the only fundraiser held by the Pigeon Key Foundation to support its education work. “People know Pigeon Key is the tiny island under the Seven Mile Bridge,” said Executive Director Kelly McKinnon. “But what a lot of people don’t know is that we operate a marine science center on the five-acre island.” The festival will include area research and eco-tourism organizations, including Aquarium Encounters, Dolphin Research Center, Friends of the Marine Sanctuary, Marathon Wild Bird Center @ Crane Point Hammock, Save a Turtle, and The Turtle Hospital. The Keys heritage will play a part in the

two-day event, with story-telling and period re-enactors, with support from the Key West Art and Historical Society, Historic Tours of America and the Friends of Old Seven. In addition to the artists and craftsmen, there will be a raffle art auction, live art paintings, classes and demonstrations. Wyland will create his signature drawings and auction them on the spot at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 with a concert by the Beatlemaniax from 5 to 8 p.m.; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5. Twoday entry is $7 for adults and free for children under 12. More information is available at pigeonkeyartfestival.com. — Contributed

Volunteers are needed for the Pigeon Key Art Festival, for setup on Friday, Feb. 3, and the event on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4 and 5. No specific experience is necessary. he first time Mike Minnick crossed the Seven Mile Bridge on his bicycle headed east with his dog three years ago, he was caught in a torrential downpour. “One second it was beautiful, and the next second it was raining so hard,” said Mike. He was worried that his dog might be blown out of the crate on the back of his bike, so he got off and pushed for about four miles. On the other end, he met some tourists who had witnessed his plight on the bridge. They promptly offered him a room in their vacation rental and dinner. His second trip headed east across the bridge earlier this week on his electric bike resulted in a flat tire. At the moment the ominous hissing started, he just happened to be streaming live on Facebook. “This lady — Holly with the blue hair of Big Pine Key — was watching. She jumped in her car and came and found me on the bridge,” Mike said, smiling. With her help, and a passing deputy, they were able to temporarily transfer Bixby to a car, allowing Mike the space he needed to change the tire safely. Then, another of Mike’s friends from Miami put him in touch with Shayne and Armand Messina of AM Electric in Marathon. They promptly offered him room and board, plus helped him fix his bicycle. “This man is a genius,” Mike said of

Armand, as Bixby and the Messinas’ dogs Noah and Ceasar cavorted in the shop yard. The fixes allowed Mike to continue on his very important mission — spreading the word about the positive aspects of rescuing a shelter animal. Bixby and Mike met in 2009 in Austin, Texas. Mike brought him home and they lived a pretty normal and uneventful life for a few years. Until a friend offered Mike a ticket to Burning Man, and he chucked all his worldly possessions for a life on the road. He got as far as Terlingua, Texas when the truck broke down. Some cross-country bicyclists convinced him to try the grand tour on two wheels. And that’s when Mike’s real journey began, crossing the country on a bicycle — himself, Bixby and a rubber chicken safety flag (aka Charlie Chicken). The adventure has taken them more than 20,000 miles all over the U.S. on a bike with Bixby’s bed mounted on the back. They’re still pedaling, making new friends everywhere and bringing attention to shelter animal adoption. In Key West, they visited the Florida Keys SPCA and other spots. In Marathon, Bixby has plans to visit the SNIP (Spay Neuter In Paradise) operation and the Florida Keys SPCA shelter in Marathon. Now he’s headed to reconnect with old friends at the shelter in Key Largo in the coming days. Follow the adventure on WheresBixby.com and Facebook.

Her father, Jose Wejebe, was a beloved Lower Keys fishing guide who hosted the “Spanish Fly” fishing show and was killed in April 2012 in a small plane crash in the Everglades. The same mentality goes for Jose’s legacy, and Krissy is making sure the show does go on. “My dad helped numerous charities,” she said. “He didn’t just stick to one thing. He was taking sick kids and wounded vets out on the boat whenever he had a chance. He was passionate about conservation efforts. He was across the board.” The Jose Wejebe Spanish Fly Foundation sticks to those roots, helping more than 30 children and veterans since its creation in 2012. Krissy and her husband, fishing guide Dave Moloney, keep Jose’s memory alive by partnering with Make-A-Wish, Outdoor Dream Foundation, Wesley House, the V.A. Hospital and more to pick participants for the trips. The weeklong trips include a vacation home donated by locals, offshore and backcountry fishing with local guides, a shark myth-busting trip, and up close and personal tours at Dolphin Research Center, The Turtle Hospital, and Mote Marine Laboratory. “We try to stay true to what Jose would do,” she said citing her dad’s marine mammal training background. “The Mote snorkel trip is a real eye opener, since we start where they are growing corals at the

lab, and then snorkel on reefs where the coral was implanted.” The fundraiser is celebrated during Jose’s birthday month. See the box for the events taking place Jan. 27-29, or visit josewejebefoundation.org. “Now, let’s just hope baby A.J. can wait a couple more weeks before making his debut,” Krissy said, awaiting Anthony Jose’s arrival.

The late Jose Wejebe shows off a silver king.

nglers can learn how to catch more and larger game fish in Florida Keys waters at the Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series set for Saturday, Jan. 28, in Islamorada. A stop on the 30th anniversary tour, the Keys session will be staged from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at Coral Shores High School, 89901 Overseas Highway (MM 89.9, oceanside). Fishing authority and NBC Sports television host George Poveromo is to be joined onstage by Keys and South Florida professional fishing captains Shannon Attales, Ron Brack, George Clark, Jr., Priscila Jager Clawges, Jimmy Gagliardini, Jason Long, Andrew Tipler, Mark Schmidt, Bouncer Smith, Diego Toiran and David Wicker. Glenn Law, a light tackle inshore and offshore fishing expert and editor at Salt Water Sportsman Magazine, will join Poveromo to cohost the event. Topics planned for the day include tricks to catch bigger dolphin, effective wreck-fishing tactics, locating the true edge of the Gulf Stream, targeting permit in channels, and flats fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon. Tickets to the seminar series cost $55 and include a course textbook, a one-year subscription or extension to Salt Water Sportsman magazine, several marine products, chances to win thousands of dollars worth of door prizes and a Florida Keys fishing trip.

In addition, a super grand prize drawing for a new Mako ProSkiff 17 is to be held one week after the final seminar. Attendees of the Islamorada seminar are entitled to attend the After Seminar Party at World Wide Sportsman, MM 81.8 bayside, with complimentary food, refreshments and live music from 5 to 9 p.m. "The fact that the seminar series is celebrating its 30th anniversary serves as the best endorsement to the caliber of our program," said Poveromo. "Throughout the years we have communicated a vast amount of pertinent how-to fishing information to our audiences." Seminar series sponsors include the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. he Kennedys are both a band and husband and wife; based out of New York, they are in the middle of a tour of Florida with gigs at the Key Largo, Marathon and Key West libraries, as well as Boondocks on Ramrod Key. “This is a working vacation. We take a little time off from playing and remember to have some other kinds of fun, too,” said Pete Kennedy, “but this isn’t our first trip to the Keys!” Singer-songwriters Pete and Maura Kennedy have been performing together for 20 years. Their latest album is called “West.” Dave Simpson of Pure M Magazine wrote, “West is a collection of thirteen enchanting tracks whose heartfelt and passionate execution makes for a wonderful listening experience.” Their musical influences include the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers and the Byrds. Pete said they love music “with good lyrics and good melodies.” Expect a couple of originals, too. “We usually close with ‘Stand,’” said Pete, of their most-requested song. “It’s about community, which is fitting, I suppose. An audience turns into a little community, even if just for a few hours,” Pete said. The duo resides fulltime in Greenwich Village, an enclave of artists. “There’s a lot of inspiration there.” For more info about the Kennedys, check out kennedysmusic.com.

The Marathon branch of Monroe County Public Library has something brand new — an outdoor stage in the back garden. The public is invited to attend the inaugural concert (The Kennedys) and fine tunes, light refreshments and awesome twinkle lights. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors into the community room.

artender Paula tried her hardest to get out of being The Weekly’s bartender of the week, but she didn’t get away fast enough. “I read these every week and have wondered how I’d get out of it if someone showed up,” she said, laughing. The retired high school English teacher sailed down from New York City and ended up in Marathon 13 years ago. “This is a good retirement job with a beautiful view,” she said from the upstairs bar overlooking Hawks Cay Marina. A server walked by with compliments sent from a table on the delicious drinks she made. Her drink of choice to make – The Mangrove Mojito. Made with Conch Republic white rum and muddled mint, lime, and simple syrup, the real show stopper is the watermelon. Served in a mason jar, “It’s a favorite among our guests,” she said. She suggests the fish tacos made with the house made “secret” sauce, and the crabby fries. “Old bay seasoned; they’re phenomenal,” she said. When she is enjoying her retirement, she spends it playing golf. “I don’t play well, but I do play often,” she said. She also loves bike riding, and taking care of her husband and the dogs they adopted from the local shelter. Angler and Ale is located on Duck Key before the entrance of Hawks Cay Resort.

Dream realized Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys Board of Directors along with community leaders, supporters, volunteers, and friends celebrate the new affordable home for longtime locals and Marathon High School graduates Ryan and Maria Banks and their three daughters. The home dedication ceremony was held on Jan. 7. This ceremony is a time for dedicating and blessing the home for the family as well as a day to thank all of the individuals and companies who help make this dream a reality. The new homeowners, like all Habitat homeowners, had to complete the required "sweat equity" necessary to the completion of the home. Habitat Middle Keys, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016, plans to build four new homes in Marathon. The Banks family is its 28th partner family. At the Jan. 7 ceremony were: Ailani, Savannah, Caidyn, Habitat board directors Mike Puto, Christina Gonzalez, Tammy Collins, Linda Mixon, Matt Bussard, Rev. WEEKLY INTERVIEW

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 20, 2017

HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

DR. FRANK TRUE LANSDEN (LEFT) Dr. Frank True Lansden, who goes by Dr. True, loves the Keys. He and his wife Lisa just saw their fifth son off to college and now have expanded the practice from Marathon to Key West. Originally, Dr. True studied law, but followed his father’s footsteps into medicine at the age of 30. He studied at Tulane University (residency, plastic surgery), Medical University of South Carolina Residency (general surgery) and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Featured on “Good Morning America” twice and on an HBO documentary, Dr. True has helped call out illegal doctors, underground plastic surgery operations and has helped victims of poor cosmetic surgery. There is nothing false about True, a dedicated family man and surgeon. Helping people just happens to be the genuine outcome of his work. 1. Full Name? Dr. Frank True Lansden Jr. 2. Worst nickname? False. 3. Who’s your favorite TV or movie doctor? Alan Alda, Hawkeye from “M*A*S*H.” 4. What misconception do people have about plastic surgeons? They think we use plastic and we are all “boobs and butts.” Actually, it’s about working with the body from head to toe, cradle to grave — all types of problems, any age. 5. If not a doctor, then what dream job would you have? I was going to be a lawyer once, and a pilot, but now I would have to say a yacht broker; I love boats. 6. Finish this sentence: The world needs more … happy people. 7. What is something people don’t know about cosmetic surgery? Botox is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. There are so many different ways to use Botox for a variety of problems. 8. Favorite guilty pleasure? Bread pudding, any kind. 9. What procedure do you like doing? Facelifts: the change can be so dramatic and they don’t take long for results. 10. Your work philosophy? When I recreate something, I always think about form and function; the two go hand in hand. That’s how you make people happy.

BEDSIDE MANNER 20 QUESTIONS WITH PLASTIC SURGEONS DR. JEFFREY WEINZWEIG AND DR. FRANK TRUE LANSDEN

L

ike finding a four-leaf clover, it was good fortune for the Keys when Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig and Dr. Frank True Lansden joined the staff at the Lower Keys Medical Center on the exact same day last February. Now Dr. Weinzweig and Dr. Lansden, both board certified plastic surgeons, are combining resources and working together to advance cosmetic surgery in the Keys. With lengthy resumes and years of experience, the doctors provide an invaluable resource for residents, whether it’s emergency reconstructive surgery or cosmetic procedures. For many, that means no more trips to Miami. But these doctors – who slip Greek and Latin into everyday conversation – aren’t just about Botox or facelifts. Dr. Weinzweig and Dr. Lansden provide an immense level of expertise with treating skin cancer, reconstructive breast cancer surgery, repairing mutilated hands, facial reconstruction, and more. They are on call at the Lower Keys Medical Center, as well as at their practices, to help residents of the Keys rebuild their bodies, from small feel-good procedures to life-changing reconstruction.

GRAND OPENING PARTY, Jan. 26, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. @ JW Plastic Surgery, 1075 Duval St., Suite C19, Key West OPEN HOUSE, Feb. 4, 5 to 8 p.m. @ True Plastic Surgery, 605 United St., Key West

DR. JEFFREY WEINZWEIG (RIGHT) Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig and his wife, Ashley, spent a weekend in the Keys and that was enough to move their family of three young boys to Key West. Dr. Weinzweig had paid his dues in the cold by receiving his medical degree from Columbia University, with a surgery residency in Chicago, plastic surgery residency at Brown University, on faculty at Brown, a fellowship in hand surgery at the University of Connecticut and a craniofacial surgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He has seven issued and pending patents in the fields of aesthetic surgery, craniofacial surgery and the management of migraine headaches. With more than 200 publications, five textbooks and a first novel on the way, it’s safe to say Dr. Weinzweig is passionate about his work. 1. Full Name: Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig. (No middle name; Dr. Weinzweig’s father was a Polish immigrant who survived the Holocaust and reached New York City. Middle names were not a common practice.) 2. Worst nickname? At the moment, “Gimpy.” (Dr. Weinzweig was wearing a boot due to fracturing his foot by falling.) 3. What question do you hate to answer? “Will this hurt?” But I respond, “Not for me!” 4. Who’s your favorite TV or movie doctor? Howie Mandel, Dr. Wayne Fiscus on “St. Elsewhere.” 5. If not a doctor, then what dream job would you have? Architect, but really reconstructive surgery is similar. 6. Finish this sentence: The world needs more … competent surgeons. 7. Which TV, movie or super hero character is your alter ego? Clark Kent. 8. What is your nerdiest passion? I am writing my sixth textbook and developing software about facial tissue. I think that is nerdy enough. 9. Favorite guilty pleasure? Licorice. 10. Do you look at people’s faces off the clock? Yes, sometimes. But it’s when procedures aren’t done well. I can’t help but notice them. If a procedure is done well, then I shouldn’t notice it, right?

ONE PERSON, ONE VOTE?

How the Electoral College renders certain voters (relatively) impotent

Jass Tremblay RE/MAX All Keys Realtor Jass Tremblay of RE/MAX All Keys Real Estate is currently helping Buyers and Sellers purchasing or selling properties in this one of a kind community. “The Florida Keys are so beautiful” she said. “I love sharing this paradise with new buyers and I feel privileged to be able to list and sell amazing properties. Her focus thus far has been on first time home buyers, investors, and luxury Real Estate. The key to her success is her dedication, passion and consistency. “When I have a transaction going with a Buyer or a Seller, I act as if it was me selling or buying the property. I am involve with every step and I am always seeking their best interest.”

One person, one vote. That concept is sort of “cornerstone of democracy” stuff right there. Each person in these United States has an equal voice and equal vote in choosing who will represent us in Washington, D.C. Except that it’s just not true. The Electoral College was implemented by our Founders, who just didn’t trust direct democracy. They were afraid that “factions of citizens with a common interest” might harm the nation as a whole. This could be a last resort to prevent an unqualified demagogue — or someone the Founders considered unfit — from assuming the office of the Presidency. The other argument is that the Electoral College protects smaller states from the possible tyranny imposed by larger states. And both arguments fall way short of reality. The composition of the United States Senate, with two senators per state no matter the population, is the constitutional safeguard against the second argument. As far as the first goes, the Electoral College has become a mere formality in modern presidential elections, with no Electoral-Collegevote-winning candidate having ever been denied the presidency by faithless electors. Five times in the history of our nation, however, the popular vote winner has been denied the presidency by the Electoral College. In 2000, Al Gore won the popular vote by a half-million votes over George W. Bush. The Supreme Court stepped in, stopped the Florida recount, and awarded the presidency to Bush. And just last year, Hillary Clinton got nearly 3 million more votes than Donald Trump, yet Trump managed to win by a large Electoral College margin. Fans of democracy (with a small “d”) have to look at these results and question the relevancy of the Electoral College. Three million votes is a large margin, and voters in some states have the right to feel somewhat disenfranchised. Let’s look at the math and see just how much some votes aren’t worth in the grand scheme of things. California is our most populous state, with 38.8 million residents and 55 Electoral College votes. Wyoming is our least populated state, with 584,000 residents and three Electoral votes. Califor-

nia’s population is almost 692,000 residents per ElecJOHN toral College vote. BARTUS In stark contrast, Wyoming has just is a City Council over 192,000 resi- member and a dents per Electoral former Mayor of College vote. That the City of Marathon. John is also means that one a musician who person’s vote in performs around California is worth town at various establishments. 27.7 percent of the vote of a Wyoming resident. As a Floridian, your vote is worth less than 29 percent of that single Wyoming vote. Do you think this is fair? Why should small sparsely populated states hold so much sway over national elections? If we are to realize the concept of “government of the people, by the people, and for the people,” why are certain people given less of a voice simply because of where they live? And taking it to the absurd, all Democrats have to do to win forever in the future is have a few hundred thousand of them relocate to sparsely populated western states with unbalanced Electoral College influence. And if the opposite had happened, if Donald Trump had won the popular vote but lost the Electoral College vote, I’d still be writing this column. Because if we are not going to use the Electoral College as the Founders intended, if we truly believe in the concept of “one person, one vote” and that we really are equal under the laws and Constitution of the United States, then the Electoral College needs to go away before the next presidential election. During the seemingly interminable election season of 2016, Donald Trump kept saying, “The system is rigged!” Turns out he was correct — except that the system was rigged in his favor! ••••• John Bartus performs Wednesdays at Tarpon Creek at the Holiday Inn Express, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, Fridays at the Florida Keys Country Club, and Saturdays at the Key Colony Inn. THE END of ‘Wet Foot,

SOCIAL SERVICES Wesley House Family Service CEO Beth Barrett “I don’t think that it would have a big effect on Wesley House. Now, any families that are picked up are going to be returned to Cuba. Second, we don’t see a lot of children crossing the straits on a boat. We occasionally get families that are undocumented, and those we help as much as we can. I don’t want people to die coming over from Cuba, but at the same time I don’t know what would happen to those would-be refugees that can’t leave Cuba.”

Dry Foot’

WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE KEYS The repeal of the “Wet Foot, Dry Foot” policy on Jan. 12 by outgoing President Barack Obama met with mixed reactions in the Florida Keys. This strip of islands, closest to Cuba, is where the vast majority of migrants land first. And yet, most disappear in the mainland’s maw just hours after arrival. The Wet Foot, Dry Foot policy allowed Cuban migrants who reached land to receive political refugee status and a path to citizenship. Those interdicted at sea were sent back. Now, all Cuban refugees without a visa will be returned to Cuba, except for some extreme cases of political persecution, according to the White House. The policy, which had been in place since 1995, was part of the fabric of life in the Keys. A group of men sitting on the side of the road with a deputy was a common sight, instantly understood by locals. Sightings of chugs were repeated from vessel to vessel over channel 16 on the VHF radio. It’s too soon to understand the repeal’s impact completely, but here are thoughts from different sectors of the Keys community on the new law of the land.

LAW ENFORCEMENT Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay “I expect to see a major decrease in migrant landings. The biggest change for our agency is that before, migrants would look for a deputy so they could start the asylum process — they would be high-fiving and giving thumbs up to the deputy. Any migrant who comes now is more likely to run from a deputy. The message to deputies on how to handle immigrants is this: We don’t want to be chasing illegal immigrants that hit shore, because they haven’t committed a crime according to the state law of Florida. Our job is checking their medical status, giving them water, and contacting our partners in federal law enforcement. Migrants would have to voluntarily comply with the process. “However, if they break a law — trespass on private property, steal a car — then it’s a different story. And if our fellow officers in federal law enforcement need our help, of course we will give it. If it’s a lawful and reasonable request, then we are going to do it.” TOURISM INDUSTRY IN THE KEYS Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West CEO Jodi Weinhofer “I am not sure it does affect the lodging industry in the Keys. This is really not a policy or a group of workers that is on our radar in the Keys. Perhaps due to language barriers or family connections, there are other areas like Miami in South Florida that are a better fit for these new residents.”

CUBAN COMMUNITY IN THE KEYS Former Key West City Commissioner Tony “Fats” Yaniz “Cubans saw this coming, that’s why there was an increase in crossings. They knew that if the U.S. normalized relations with Cuba, then the citizens were going to be treated like any other citizen of a Caribbean country. As the honorary Key West ambassador to Cuba, I’ve had a lot of calls. People were telling me, ‘My brother or my mother or my sister was ready to come.’ So on an individual basis, that hits home. As far as the repeal of the policy … the 50-year embargo didn’t work. In order for capitalism to move forward in Cuba, you have to end the Wet Foot, Dry Foot policy. As my friend said, ‘The best cure for communism is a well-marketed cheeseburger.’ The majority of Cubans crossing recently came here for the economic advantage, and who can blame them? In the long run, this will benefit the Cuban people as well as everyone else.” MONROE COUNTY SCHOOLS Superintendent Mark Porter “Previously when Cuban refugees made it successfully to dry-land U.S. soil they were taken to Miami for processing. I really don't have an accurate measure as to how many of them may have returned to Monroe County to reside and possibly enroll students in our schools. I don't think there will be a noticeable or appreciable difference in the number of students entering the Monroe County Schools. That said, regardless of this policy change the Monroe County Schools do continue to see significant increases in the number of ELL (English Language Learner) students. For the past couple of years we have made, and will continue to make, adjustments in our staffing models to meet the needs of this ever-growing segment of our student population.”
