ustrian diver Thomas Nemetz was out sailing when he had an epiphany.

“Why don’t they have maps of the ocean floor?” he wondered.

Previously, companies like Google attempted ocean mapping, but featured only general terrain charting, according to Paige Tyrell, marketing assistant of Ocean Maps.

That was then, this is now.

“Ocean Maps allows users to see color coordinated depth lines, hotspot with photos, toggle various views, read overall site descriptions, obtain temperature and visibility, and read about ocean life present,” said Tyrell. “Perhaps the coolest feature is Dive Mode, which virtually simulates the dive.”

The app has four views: terrain, underwater, depth, and dive mode.

Only a year old, the small Austrian-based company has charted 120 sites in the Red Sea, along with Attersee Lake in Austria and Kreidesee Lake in Germany, and now, the

the Tortugas and Sand Key are free with the download, while others need to be purchased. So far the company has a handful of downloads for different locations, but plan on merging them on to one platform.

Their exploration team spent 10 hours a day, for three weeks, canvasing sites and collecting data in the Keys. The team used side scan sonar and remote operated vehicles to gather information. They dove, took pictures and captured data on sites from Key Largo to Key West to build the 3-D models.

“Right now divers rely on memory or hand drawn maps. Our app gives you actual geographic data that is to scale,” said Tyrell. “We hope to increase safety by making the experience less overwhelming. If you have some idea of what you’ll encounter, it’ll be easier to orient yourself once you’re in.”

The next features Ocean Maps plans to introduce are a customizable route feature, and a virtual community to shares photos, hotspots, and custom routes with other users. Custom routes allow users to make their own tracks or remap wrecks if a storm reorients the site, for example.

Ocean Maps debuted the product at the Dive Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) event in Las Vegas this past November. That was where Capt. Tuck Hall, of Ocean Divers in Key Largo, first stumbled across the booth and saw possibilities in the new technology.

“I think there’s lot of potential there. The map of the wrecks were pretty well done and I think as a tool for briefing dives it holds promise,” said Capt. Hall.

However, Hall says the app still has a little more to go before it becomes a necessity. “The reef maps and resolution are not as polished as the wrecks, and the description and positional accuracy of wrecks needs a little adjustment.”

Ocean Maps is available on both Google Play and the iTunes store for free, and is seeking more feedback from locals.

BOCC accepts affordable housing recommendations

T

he Monroe County Board of County Commissioners held a special meeting Tuesday in Marathon to focus on the affordable/workforce housing shortage in the land-limited County.

The BOCC was presented with 33 recommendations established by a 14-member Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC) that also included Commissioner Sylvia Murphy and Commissioner Heather Carruthers. The Committee was established by County ordinance in 2015 and met monthly for a year.

The BOCC approved or supported most of the 33 recommendations, which addressed financing, monitoring, illegal rentals, community outreach and the County’s unique dilemma of having limited affordable allocation units to provide to builders under state mandate.

While the BOCC commissioners agreed that trying to “solve” the complex problem would take a concerted community wide effort, Commissioner Carruthers said: “We did make progress.”

Among the recommendations that the BOCC approved or supported: • Amend the definition of workforce housing in the Land Development Code to mean individuals or families who derive at least 70 percent of their income from work done in Monroe County or who are gainfully employed supplying goods and or services to county residents and visitors.

• Continue the inclusionary housing study for non-residential development to supply affordable housing for the employees it needs to operate • Direct staff to review legal, financial and legislative issues on the development of a property tax incentive for homeowners who rent a lawfully established existing market rate unit to a member of the workforce within the very low, low and median affordable housing income limits and rental rates.

While many places have problems with affordable housing, Monroe County has the unique challenge of its geography and environment. The state limits growth in Monroe County because the island chain has been designated an Area of Critical State Concern. The County only has 692 affordable allocations remaining.

Already in the pipeline are more than 15 projects whose developers have applied for or have indicated they will apply for affordable allocation units.

If all the projects in the pipeline are developed, only 162 affordable allocations would be left, said Mayte Santamaria, Monroe County Director of Planning and Environmental Resources.

“There are no easy solutions,” Santamaria said. “The Board took time today to review, debate and listen to the community on various strategies and incentives. The Board then directed staff to move forward with the ones they think could provide more affordable housing in the Keys.”

District surveys on school start times In response to parents’ concerns, School Board members have proposed that the district conduct a survey to get input on school start times.

It is important that parents complete the survey to express their thoughts on this important topic. Only one survey is needed even if you have children in more than one school. The survey will direct you to questions regarding both schools.

The preferred method is to take the survey online; however, paper and pencil versions of the survey will be available at your child’s school as

well. The online version is available in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole. If you are unable to complete the survey at home, you may go to the Parent Education Center at each school to complete the survey on a computer or you can complete a paper and pencil version as stated above. School staff will advise you how to complete the paper and pencil version. The deadline for completing the survey is Tuesday, Dec. 22. BRIEFLY MarineLab to host microplastic awareness seminar As a member of the Florida Microplastic Awareness Project, MarineLab is offering a community outreach educational event on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. It will be at the MarineLab facility located at 51 Shoreland Drive in Key Largo, MM 103.2 oceanside. Participants will learn about the impact that microplastic has on the ocean and the adverse effect on the plankton, fish and shellfish that may eat them or take them in over their gills. Participants are encouraged to bring a one-liter sample of canal or nearby water to examine for evidence of microplastics. The seminar will also cover microplastics in common household toiletries and other items. A small $5 donation is suggested to help offset the cost of the materials consumed in the lab. obbe Bonnen has remained the talented and humble musician whose authentic style mirrors his personality since he began his musical journey.

Growing up in South Miami during the 1960s listening to the classics, Bonnen lived during some of music history’s most significant moments.

“I remember where I was when I first heard Don Mclean’s ‘American Pie,’” said Bonnen of the iconic American classic. “I pulled off the road and thought to myself, ‘Wow, look what he’s done.’”

By the time he started playing on South Beach in the late ‘80s, an acoustic guitar was all the young musician needed. Bonnen enjoys playing songs that take a minimalist’s approach, like those by James Taylor or Paul Simon.

Caribbean Club Robbie Whitehurst has been working at the Caribbean Club since 1963. “I had to cut the grass back in those days; when my family took it over,” he said. Robbie and his two sisters, Kathie and Kristy, still run the historic club.

Robbie said, “Beer is a hot commodity, especially on a hot day. But in the mornings we are famous for our Bloody Marys.” They use fresh squeezed limes, and Robbie invites patrons to squeeze their own.

The long-standing establishment also proudly claims to be the only bar left that does Rum Runners in a blender, the old-fashioned way. Robbie finds other ways to keep busy, too.

“When not bartending, I work on the boat ramp, the pool table, the pool sticks … always something. Right now I’m working on my boat so I can participate in the parade,” he said, referring to the Key Largo Boat Parade set for Saturday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

On that night, the Caribbean Club has set eight waterfront tables available for $100 a piece to benefit Hospice.

Robbie said each table comes with a bottle of champagne, “the kind that has a cork.”

“We hope to make $1,000 for Hospice. Hospice does a great job, they make it comfortable for everyone’s final ride,” said Robbie.

Snow piles up at Founders Park Islamorada Chamber hosts 12th annual Holiday Festival

F

ounders Park was awash with Yule-tidings this past Friday for the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce’s annual Holiday Festival.

The scene included a 35-foot tall Christmas tree complete with falling snow, a rum bar spreading holiday cheer, vendors, a 30-ton snow mountain, lighted holiday parade fun activities for the kids and an appearance by the jolly old guy himself, Santa.

The amphitheater’s stage featured a pet parade, costume contests, holiday music and performances by students of On Your Toes dance studio.

“We had to make quite a few stops to see to everyone’s comfort,” said Torelli, adding the trip to Orlando took them twice as long. But the diligence and love paid off from watching the Olympic Torch be lit, suffering the agony of defeat with smiles and a dance party with Mickey and Minnie thrown by Disney hosts.

“The funniest part was slipping and sliding on the wet field during the game we lost,” said FKCC student and partner, DJ Smith, 18, a marine engineering major. “But everyone was still just so happy.” Smith, like Torelli, sought out the volunteer opportunity having worked with special needs kids in his home state of New York and is eager to do it again next year.

“We work so well together and created a really close bond in a short time, I wish it could of lasted all year,” said Torelli.

ey West is known for a lot of great firsts, and this one is no exception. Florida Keys Community College is the first Florida community college to have a Special Olympics flag football team. In their inaugural year, the United Flag Football team has already been crowned champions. The team, thanks to a group of dedicated athletes and student partners, brought home silver medals in November from the Fall Classic State Tournament in Orlando.

“The athletes are so caring and I felt like they really looked up to me, when little do they know, I looked up to them,” said Gaby Torelli,19, criminal justice major and partner to the team. “Our athletes got so much better from day one and never gave up which is all I could ever ask from anyone that’s on my team.”

Gaby Torelli was awarded a gold medal for Inspirational Partner of the Year at the games and it’s easy to see why. As a natural athlete, Torelli sought out the position on the team with willingness to give her time, heart and energy to something worthwhile. On the field, the team consists of two partners aiding and assisting three athletes; but it requires much more than tossing the ball around.

The team practiced every Wednesday for two hours, scrimmaged with Key West High, and due to a Miami tournament cancellation,

Beach & Beer Mile precedes half marathon GABRIEL SANCHEZ

T

he second annual Islamorada Half Marathon and 10K is set for Sunday, Dec. 11, at 7 a.m.

But the lesser known “Beach and Beer Mile,” may end up stealing the show among thirsty athletes. The Beer mile, which places four beer stations throughout a mile course, is set for Saturday, Dec. 10 at noon.

This year, roughly 1,000 runners will represent 40 different states and a few countries throughout all the races. Race founders, and Coral Shores alumni, Robbie McClung and Eli Bailin, organized the Beach and Beer Mile with the intention of adding something fun for locals to precede Islamorada’s premier destination running event.

“The half marathon and 10K is for more serious runners, so the Beach and Beer mile will be a fun departure from the usual race environment,” said Bailin. “It’s for locals, friends, or family, who came to root on their loved ones, but want to get in on the action.”

Registration-packet pickup for Sunday’s half marathon and 10K will be at Florida Keys Brewing Co. on Friday, Dec. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. Late race entries can also register that evening or the following morning at 10 a.m. at the Islander, a Guy Harvey Outpost.

Space is limited, so hasty registration is encouraged.

The Beer Mile kicks off the weekend races from the beachfront of the Islander Resort. The first wave of competitive runners departs the starting line at noon followed by a wave of social runners at 12:30 p.m.

Each beer station will be serving easy-drinking beer along with water and Gatorade.

“Were happy to take a real popular event like the Beer Mile, and put a Keys twist on it,” said McClung.

Entry is $35 for the Beer Mile, but locals can show their IDs at registration for a $10 discount. All participants receive a complimentary t-shirt.

With 125 pool chairs, there is plenty of room for tourists and locals alike to enjoy all-day food and drink specials with a revolving mix of live entertainment and DJs. The spacious deck area can hold 250 guests comfortably.

“It’s a balancing act between guests and tourists. We want locals to feel comfortable and guests to enjoy themselves on their stay,” said General Manager Kara Lundgren. “We want everyone to have fun and come enjoy what we like to call, our ‘casual elegance.’

In the cooler months, the Wave Pool is kept at a comfortable 84 degrees, and during the hot summer, it’s chilled. The Wave Pool is handicap accessible and the maximum depth of the pool is only 5 feet, so no diving. At night, color changing mood lights add to the relaxing ambiance.

Amara Cay’s staff enjoys seeing poolside guests’ smile, so they surprise them with treats. In the past, they’ve brought out popsicles, eucalyptus infused face cloths, and frozen grapes to hand out.

Just beyond the Tiki bar, construction is under way on a new lawn area for yard games. Amara already has games like Connect Four and life-size chess for guests, along with pool floats, and a “Beach Read” book program.

The new accommodations have received positive feedback from long

time guests.

“I think it’s spectacular, there’s no comparison with the old pool and the new one. It’s absolutely stunning and the view is wonderful, they’ve done a great job,” said John Fellgraff, whose son lives in the Keys and whom they frequently visit.

His wife, Judy, raved about the staff and attention to detail.

“The people here are so accommodating and friendly. That’s a big reason why we come back. They remember who you are and look to meet every want and need you could have,” said Judy. “Somebody really has a sense of design, and it reflects in the interior part of the resort as well. It’s great.”

In January, Amara Cay is launching its New Moon Parties. Admission is $15 and a complimentary drink is included.

The event will also welcome local DJs and live entertainment to perform.

Pollution, global warming, cutting down our mangroves, tearing up seagrass, touching coral, and coral dying due to rising PH levels are all part of it. I will use glass bottles, reusable bags, and not litter. Just be mindful!

econd-generation charter captain Paul Ross of Islamorada led his anglers aboard Relentless to the win of the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament that ended Sunday, Dec. 4. The tournament kicked off the renowned triple-crown Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Championship series.

Upper Keys anglers Fenton Langston and Jimmy Hendrix, with James and Debbie David of Fort Lauderdale, released 15 sailfish. Six sails were caught within 40 minutes Sunday which led the team to the overall win and trophy.

Second place, with 14 released sailfish, went to Capt. Robert Collins at the helm of Last Dance, fishing with Matt McLean of Naples, and Islamorada resi-

dents Ken Longaker, Robert Helms and Brandon Hopper. McLean contributed eight of the 14 sails to earn the highpoint angler trophy.

A field of 21 boats and 96 anglers tallied a total of 172 releases over the three-day tournament, according to organizers.

The remaining two events in the Gold Cup Series include the Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament set for Jan. 19-21 and the Islamorada Fishing Club Sailfish Tournament Jan. 25-26, when an overall series champion is to be crowned.

Deliver food to someone who would otherwise go hungry. Offer support to families facing the loss of a loved one.

With locations throughout the Keys, your closest Visiting Nurse’s Association, Hospice, Meals on Wheels or Center for Independent Living is only a phone call away. It may be the most important call you make this season of giving.

• Key West Rehabilitation Center distributes holiday gifts to those who call the facility home. The greatest need this year is lotion for the women, cologne for the men, and blankets for everyone. • Keys Area Interdenominational Resources, best known as KAIR, has been serving Marathon’s needy since 1998. They work in partnership with other agencies and organizations to help return people to productive lives. In 2012, they began overseeing Independence Cay to extend their services to the area’s homeless.

They accept donations of every type – time, cash, food, clothing, in-kind donations – they can use whatever you have to offer. A wish list and methods of donating are detailed on their website at KairOnline.net.

• Folks at Marathon’s DAV Chapter 122 assemble packages for community members deployed on active military duty both stateside and overseas. A donation box is located on their premises during normal operating hours beginning at 10 a.m. Items most needed are clothing, dehydrated food like jerky, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toothpicks, music CDs, and movie videos.

Local disabled vets can use a little help, too. Donations of money or gift cards can brighten the day of someone feeling lost and forgotten. The Chapter collects those, too.

Some of you may be reading this and think, sounds great but I’m already stretched out. No worries! Need exists all year long, not just during the holidays. Charity has no season. Your gift is appreciated no matter when it arrives.

Baby born in flight This summer, the LifeNet Key West crew picked up Martha Roca, who was just 26-weeks pregnant, from a nearby hospital to transport her to Miami for pregnancy complications. They were surprised when she told them halfway through the flight, “this baby is coming.�

Thanks to the calm strength of the medical crew, including Jo Thevenet, flight nurse, and Leo Mijares, flight paramedic, baby Jacob was born in flight at just two lbs. Gary Glover, pilot, handled the situation smoothly and was successfully able to bring Martha and Jacob to the care they both needed.
