Tablet and smartphone help available at library

An automated phone call requesting debit information is a scam, according to a recent report from Centennial Bank. The call informs customers their account has been locked, deactivated, or frozen and to enter a debit card account number in the keypad. Most of the calls are originating from an 844 area code. Centennial Bank said it does not handle frozen debit cards by calling or texting. For more information, please call 888-372-9788.

The holidays in Key West are sometimes a wonderful and bizarre affair. It is hard to describe to outsiders that we locals don’t long for a “white” Christmas or care much about chestnuts roasting over an open fire. We have conch train caroling, a massive parade we watch in shorts, lighted bikes and sailboats, and paddle boarding before Christmas dinner. And for some, it’s about celebrating your friends as much as family. So we asked locals…

What is your favorite Keys holiday tradition?

Becky Torres said, “It’s New Years. I always go to Bourbon Street to watch Sushi fall in the high heel.” Now, that’s a sentence only a local can understand.

2. Worst nickname? Danger Kitty.

D

on’t underestimate Raymond J. Vazquez. While his youth and charm are beguiling, there’s a lot more behind that clever smile. Born and raised in Key West, Vazquez wasn’t envisioning his future after graduating Key West High — good thing his father, Raymond Vazquez, president of Florida Keys Electric, knew his son well enough to have the perfect plan.

At a mere 18 years old, Vazquez’s father convinced him to take his Realtor’s exam. Not surprisingly, Vazquez is now one of the most popular real estate agents in the Keys (nominated twice for the Bubbas People’s Choice Award for Favorite Realtor). Presently an associate broker with Truman and Company, Vazquez has his foot in many of our doors, successfully selling real estate in Key West and co-hosting a TV show.

His accomplishments didn’t come without hiccups. Vazquez returned from college in Tallahassee to begin selling real estate right as the market hit recession. So what does a local boy do? Head out onto the water and become a premier fly fishing captain for two years. When

3. Name one famous person you would bring back to life, why? Jose Wejebe, he was a fishing legend and icon. He passed away a few years ago in a plane crash. I grew up watching him every Saturday on ESPN on the TV show “Spanish Fly.” I had the honor of meeting him a couple of times, through mutual friends, and he was a great guy. They say only the good die young; he was definitely someone that fit into that category. the recession lifted, he already had a job offer in New York, but family and friends knew he should stay. Keys real estate is Vazquez’s calling. Before the age of 30, Vazquez’s achievements include: the owner and broker of Vizcaya & Co. Real Estate Services, as well as the co-owner of Sellstate Island Properties, and he has served on the Key West Association of Realtors Board of Directors for three years. Now with Truman and Co., Vazquez also co- hosts "The Guide to Florida Keys Real Estate” with Jenna Stauffer on Channel 19. The program is gaining popularity, reaching more than 450,000 viewers.

It’s hard not to be impressed.

(He even has a pilot’s license). For Vasquez, his latest achievement means the most, owning his first home at 30-years-old with partner Matt Nooner. It seems “home” is synonymous with Vazquez, in every sense of the word.

“I take pride in the fact that I can say I sell real estate in one of the best places in this world — paradise.

I love what I do. I love my job. Not very many people can say that,” said Raymond Vazquez, Realtor.

4. What question do you hate to answer? Can you find me a four bedroom, three bath Conch home in Key West, on the water, with a pool, offstreet parking and under $400,000?

5. If you won the lottery, what would you do? Pay my debts, take care of my family, donate to charity and then travel the world. I love seeing new places!

6. If you had a TV tagline, what would it be? The Hustler.

7. Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Batman.

8. What is your nerdiest passion? I guess about the nerdiest thing I like to do every now and then, when I’m hungover, is stay inside all day and binge on pizza and play video games. That’s about it, though, surprisingly.

9. If you could take three items on a deserted island, what? why? Rum for a little buzz, sunscreen and a hat for protection, and a fishing pole to catch dinner. (That’s four.)

10. What was your first thought this morning? “Check your emails, Raymond; wait, on second thought, move slow. I probably shouldn’t have had that last drink!”

11. Favorite guilty pleasure?

Chocolate, I really like my desserts, but my guilty pleasure is definitely chocolate. It’s a serious problem.

12. What misconception do people have about real estate?

That we don’t work hard for our commissions. People really don’t have any idea how much work goes into all of it. From advertising to the closing table its time consuming. The successful agent, or the ones that stand out from the rest, work 24/7 at all hours and even while on holidays or vacation.

13. If not a Realtor, then what dream job would you have?

For a very long time I wanted to be a commercial airline pilot. I thought it would have been cool to travel the world and get paid for it at the same time.

14. Funniest Key West sighting? The chicken lady on her bike; that’s a new one.

15. You are sitting at a diner counter eating…who would you want to walk in and sit next to you? Probably Fredrik Eklund from “Million Dollar Listing NY,” although he probably isn’t one to sit at a diner counter.

The guy is a real estate selling machine. I’ve read his book twice and I think it would be pretty cool to pick his brain.

16. What don’t people know about you? I love to cook.

ocal musician and music producer Miguel Perez grew up in Key West during the 1980s. He remembers a far less commercialized Key West and a childhood spent mostly outdoors at a simple untouched beach that is now the modern-day Fort Zach. Miguel played trumpet and percussion in the band at Key West High, but was ultimately drawn to hip-hop music. His love of hip-hop lead him to electronic music and the world of DJ'ing, which he pursued while attending University of Florida in Gainesville.

After college, Miguel remained in Gainesville and started a career in real estate but spent all his spare time producing music. He taught himself digital audio production programs like Cubase and Reason and sat in with a lot of different bands, bringing his hiphop style to the stage.

After the real estate meltdown in the mid-2000s, Miguel was compelled to change tracks, so he got a teaching degree and in 2009 wound up teaching back in Key West. It was around this time that he also started getting more serious about music.

Back in Key West, his first gig was at the Oriole doing electronic music.

Then he started singing, and with his new-found talent formed Con Leche Band. About a year ago he started getting serious about guitar too, and now finds himself performing almost every night at spots like Lucy's, Lager Heads, Mangoes, and Blue Heaven. Miguel is grateful for a group of talented friends

While Miguel enjoyed teaching and was adored by his students, this past June he decided to pursue music exclusively. He was recently chosen as a new Studio Artist at The Studios of Key West and is also involved with the Key West Theater, and was a featured performer in last week’s Sunday Ramble.

Miguel still works with kids in the community teaching song writing and tutoring. His advice to students: “Start something now — don't wait, don't waste time.”

Bartender Christina Davis has been at the Springer’s location for the past seven years and came with the place from the two previous owners. Working the day shift, she loves her job because of her local lunch crew who come in for the specials.

She said her specialty cocktail is the Island Punch, a mixture of four different rums with pineapple and a splash of cranberry juice. “It’s perfectly potent and refreshing,” she said.

She and head server Liam Martin agree the new, best dish at the restaurant is the coconut shrimp, which is hand-breaded in house. “It’s brilliant,” said Martin. “Our new chef is incredible and a lot of our entrees, and all of our desserts and pizza dough is made in house.”

Davis used to spend her days off fishing and snorkeling, but lately has been consumed with her new real estate career at Coldwell Banker in Big Pine Key. “I’m working on my first deal now,” she said.

Moving from Ohio 24 years ago, she is still a huge Browns fan, watching games with her patrons at the bar and usually shedding a tear or two with each loss at the end of the game. “Let’s not talk about the Browns,” she said.

D

id you know that last Christmas Wesley House Family Services gave 1,500 kids about three presents a piece for the holidays? Or, that this year their number has almost doubled for the amount of kids that need presents? Well, there is a way we can all help from Key Largo to Key West by bringing a present to one of the three lighted bike parades happening Keyswide.

For the past eight years, hundreds of lighted bikes have lit up Key West from Bayview Park to Duval Street, and this year, two more events in Key Colony Beach and Key Largo have been added.

“The need in the Middle and Upper Keys has grown for children and to meet that need, we have to figure out a way to get more toys,” said Wesley House’s Jeremy Wilkerson. “This is a fun event that brings people together for a good time.”

On top of the three-mile, slow-paced ride, Santa will be at each event and children under the age of 15 will be fitted and given

a helmet, if needed. “The ride is short, so everyone in the family can enjoy it,” Wilkerson said.

In the past, pods of lighted dolphins, presents, and Santa and Mrs. Claus, and just lit up bikes have participated, and it’s even fun to watch along the routes. “It’s a great opportunity for the community to come together for a good cause,” he said.

An unwrapped present is all it takes to participate. Or, a cash donation is also welcome. “It’s for the kids, anything helps,” he said.

act: not everyone can sparkle. But those who do, those who can light up the night like a glitter bomb, well, those are the Muriels. They are Key West’s own trio of pure extravagant, lip-syncing, dancing, entertainment joy.

But they don’t just hang out on street corners blowing kisses ... well, yes, yes, they do. They are Kardashian-ism at its finest, riding around in their Muriel mobile shamelessly playing to, while simultaneously snubbing, the tourist paparazzi. They look like the Andrews Sisters time warped from Haight-Ashbury in matching outrageous outfits, “disco puff” wigs and signature oversized white sunglasses.

But it’s not easy being a Muriel, just ask Susan Campbell, Scott McCarthy, and Danielle Martin.

“The biggest challenge is to get dresses that fit all three of us,” laments Muriel No. 1 Susan Campbell, “And Scott still forgets to sit like a lady.”

“What can I tell you, I am a big woman, huge in Asia,” jokes the only male, Muriel No. 2 Scott McCarthy.

“We just love dressing up,” laughs Muriel No. 3 Danielle Martin.

The Muriels started like all fabulous (and horrendous) things do: when one thing lead to another. In 2011, the group started as the “Water Losers,” lip syncing Abba’s “Waterloo” at a birthday party. More gigs ensued and they evolved into the Muriels, stealing

Ever since, their dance card has been full. (Original Muriel, Kimberly Denney had to eventually leave due to the rigors of rehearsal scheduling.) My biggest inspiration at KWHS has been my parents because they push me to be better in sports and academics.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why?

The class that has prepared me best for life after high school is Mr. Forbus’ health class. My dream job is to be a pediatrician, and taking his class gives me opportunity to take field trips to trauma centers, plus hands-on classroom learning. I can say I’m ready for the medical field.

SALT Gallery welcomes the public to a preview of the “sister sanctuaries” of Cuba’s Parque Nacional Guanahacabibes and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It celebrates a conservation accord signed by the U.S. and Cuba last year and pays tribute “to the interrelated beauty of these two national treasures,” says Jeffrey Cardenas. The limited edition book features 100 images that exhibited last summer in Cardenas’ rare American solo show in Havana’s environmental gallery Sala de la Diversidad.

Key West Gallery will host Alexei Butirskiy and the world’s largest collection of his original paintings.

Butirskiy will be painting in the gallery Dec. 9 and 10 so clients can witness how he builds one of his masterpieces.

Alexei’s paintings portray the world around him in truthful and non-glorified terms. A sense of tranquility is conveyed in each of his paintings.

utcracker Key West will be performed Saturday, Dec. 10 to Sunday, Dec. 18 at the Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center. Eight public performances are scheduled, with professional dancers from around the world joining 60 local performers to retell this beloved holiday tale.

Key West’s local lore and maritime history set the stage with the story opening in 1864 at the Christmas party of the mayor of Key West. The adventure continues, taking young heroine, Clara, through a fight with the rooster king, battles with sailors and a trip to the coral reef where she floats over the wreck of the Atocha in a diving bell.

Beautiful period costumes, special effects and delightful new scenic enhancements contribute to the production, delighting audiences both young and old.

The principal dancers in this year’s production are Camila Ferrera, dancing the role of the Sea Star Fairy with Nurlan Abougaliev as her Cavalier.

In 2015, Nutcracker Key West was honored to become the only permanent production at Tennessee Williams Fine Art Center. Tickets can be purchased on Keystix.com with a special family night rate on Wednesday, Dec. 15.

ack in 2006, Key West rent was skyrocketing and artists’ “studios” were rapidly disappearing, seized for livable space. Fortunately, a few generous, forward-thinking patrons of the arts tasked themselves with forming The Studios Of Key West as the solution. The original goal of TSKW was to provide local artists — writers, painters, musicians — affordable studio space, have a communal gallery, offer classes and function as a non-profit organization. (Authors note: I was one of the original studio artists.) Now, TSKW is looking back on the past 10 years with pride and awe at the remarkable growth and expansion the organization.

“TSKW is an enormous testament to the vision of the people who came before me,” said Mary Jean Conners, newest board president. “The fabulous leadership makes it so easy to be president, although the whole operation takes an enormous amount of work.”

In a mere decade, it has expanded to its permanent home at 533 Eaton St., the renovated Scottish Rite Masonic

Center, with working studios, two galleries, a 200-seat theater, classrooms, and the adjacent Books and Books book store. The residency program hosts visiting artists from around the world providing lectures, performances, exhibits and a multitude of classes and events all year round. It is a cultural epicenter mixing long established artists with new, younger generations.

TSKW is built on the idea of possibility, but it was the public support that propelled its popularity. Years of generous giving and membership have brought TSKW this far, and with more membership it can go further. Members are given a host of advantages when it comes to a variety of events, but also they are a part of creating a space that encourages artists’ dreams.

“I am able to be a creative professional in Key West because of TSKW,” said Studio resident, Miguel Perez, who now works fulltime on his passion thanks to TSKW. “It’s the perfect place to share my music with the community.”
