Bartus, Cook, Zieg Vote will be verified late Thursday

To many locals, the result of the Marathon City Council was a surprise.

Four candidates — three of them currently sitting councilmembers — were vying for four seats. The biggest winner of the night was John Bartus with 27 percent of the vote.

He has already served three terms on council, ran independently twice since and was defeated, and most recently been appointed to finish the terms of both Ginger Snead and Chris Bull. Of course, he recently received a huge endorsement from the public as Marathon’s favorite celebrity at the recent Best of Marathon awards.

The second highest vote getter was political newcomer Steven Cook with 23 percent of the vote.

Then it starts to get interesting.

The initial count of Marathon voters put Marathon Vice Mayor Bill Kelly two votes ahead of Councilman Dan Zieg.

When all the precincts were counted Tuesday night, Zieg was ahead of Kelly by five votes with 23.33 percent of the vote, over Kelly’s 23.28 percent of the vote.

There is one slim chance that the outcome can change. Apparently, there were six provisional votes cast in the Middle Keys. Voters are issued a provisional ballot when, for example, they show up without a proper photo/ signature ID. The voters have until Thursday, Nov. 10 at 5 p.m. to show up at a Supervisor of Elections Office to have that vote verified and counted, but must do so of their own volition. If the voters verify their eligibility, and all six votes were cast for Kelly, he could win the third seat on the dais.

ickey Belin enlisted in the Army in 1944 on the same day as his brother, George, but the two parted ways immediately.

“He was the brain. They sent him off to study the Japanese language,” said Mickey. “I had another type of job entirely.”

Mickey’s service was brief, but memorable, all of it on the Fort Dix (actually, Fort McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst) campus in New Jersey not far from home. He was a part of the 62nd Signal Corps Command and claims to have been the fastest typist in the pool. But that only scratches the surface. Before he ever put on a service uniform, Mickey was an established musician, a trumpeter.

He said he played every time chance he got during the war.

“We played with the Army band, or just with the guys, or with the USO (United Service Organizations) when they came through,” he said.

Mickey said he played his first paid gig at the age of 10 when a tavern owner approached him about live music. Mickey put together a small, ragtag ensemble featuring himself on trumpet, a violinist, a drummer and a pianist.

“He was going to pay us 50 cents each,” Mickey recalled, grinning. “But when he figured out we could only play seven songs, he chucked us out of there.”

Mickey turns 99 years young this month, and his recall is perfect — the name of the tavern, the USO stars he saw on base, stories from the Old Country involving his father and the Cossacks, and the

fact that his doctor recently told him he’s good for at least another six or seven years, much to his delight.

“I just can’t believe how sharp he is. He’s got a great mind and remembers everything, all the dates,” said longtime friend Gordon Dodge, snapping his fingers.

Mickey’s third wife, Shirley, nods her head in agreement. The snowbirds met as Keys neighbors, before their respective spouses passed away, and resumed their friendship two decades ago. It’s been “legal” for 15 years, Mickey says with a wink.

He said his first vacation in the Keys was way back in 1964.

“My late wife and I fished off the bridges and we thought that was great. Then we went out on the Marathon Lady — $5 a day — and that was even better. Big grouper, big snapper; we were smitten,” Mickey said.

Throughout his life, Mickey’s “day job” was upholstery work that he learned from his father, a saddlemaker born in Russia. But no matter what, Mickey always played the trumpet. He sat in with Tommy Dorsey in Atlantic City and once played the World Fair, his finest moment he said. He still practices daily and plays once a week at the Marathon Grill and Ale House on Sunday evenings.

As for the Army, well, “I guess I got a little more responsible,” he said, grinning his irrepressible grin.

igh school let out for summer in 1943, and Arthur “Art” Sims, now a Marathon resident by way of New York, wanted to join the U.S. Coast Guard. He convinced his parents to sign him up at only 17. “It was a difficult decision for them as I was an only child,” he said.

After training, he was assigned to a ship, the U.S.S. Gallup PF47 with a background in firefighting and gunnery and was heading overseas.

“It only took one week … we were ordered to New Guinea where we were to shell a Japanese position while the U.S. Army attacked on land.”

“We had many close calls there with the return fire but once again, no damages and the landing was secured,” he said. “We had three more situations like this one before getting a little rest.”

Dealing with typhoons in the Philippines and being tossed around like a matchstick on the water, the crew worked tirelessly to explode mines in the rough waters. The ship found adversity after hitting a reef and bending propellers, sending them back to a Seattle Navy yard for repairs. “It was a hard two weeks of travel as we could not go fast and the ship would shake terribly,” he said.

After the repairs, they were ordered to the Aleutian Islands as a weather ship in the Bering Sea for the bombers that attacked North Japan and served convoy duty before finally being relieved in July 1945.

“Happy days, the war was over,” Sims said, who was eventually honorably discharged from the service and later retired in Florida.

o part of a service member’s uniform is more important than their hat or, in military jargon, their “cover.” Starting in boot camp, military members are instructed on how to properly wear their covers, how to maintain them, label them, and even on which part of the cover a hand salute is rendered. A service member wears a handful of various covers, some of which pair specifically with dress or working uniforms. Covers are a big deal, and have strict rules to their proper wear both indoors and outdoors. Some covers have even taken on an iconic status in pop culture, such as the Navy’s white hat, or Dixie Cup in “squid” language, which just became part of the women’s dress uniform for the first time in history.

TONY D’AIUTO ARMY AIR DEFENSE Marathon native Tony D’Aiuto enlisted at age 17, with his parents’ consent, before he ever graduated high school and served from 1978 to 1981.

He did basic training at Fort Bliss in Texas, then headed over to Bad Kissingen in Germany where he was an artillery mechanic, working primarily on the Hawk surface-to-air missile system with the 32nd Army Air Defense Command.

“I loved my time in the service, I wouldn’t change it for the world,” he said. “In fact, I kind of wished that I had made it a career.”

D’Aiuto’s father served during the Korea conflict as an aircraft mechanic. When he got out of the service, Tony followed in his father’s footsteps and now owns Antique Aircraft Res-

He enlisted in 1962 and served three tours in Vietnam and has four Distinguished Flying Crosses among other commendations. He flew the CH-47 Chinook and also a fixed-wing spotter aircraft working with three separate units during the war.

“The missiles were the size of telephone poles and we took 20 of those in lethal range in less than 15 minutes … and that was on the way to the target,” Davidson said. “It was that kind of day.”

He enlisted in 1963 and flew in 200 combat missions.

From 1968 to 1970, he was a Top Gun instructor in Key West. He resigned in the 1970s, but stayed in the reserves until 1975, leaving the service with the rank of Lt. Commander.

Davidson said the rank is equivalent to that of major in the Marine Corps … because he started his service in the Marine Corps which flew helicopters.

“Now helicopters are cool,” he

said, adding that he changed his commission over to the Navy. “But back then the Marine Corps’ helicopters were 6,000 old, worn out parts circling looking for a place to crash.”

ommanding Officer Captain Bobby “Beetle” Baker has only been head of Boca Chica’s NAS for four months and said he couldn’t be any luckier. FighterSweep.com named Key West’s NAS the number one Fighter Detachment location in the United States and he wholeheartedly agrees, he said. With the amazing weather, the boundless areas to fly and the after hours spearfishing, it’s a pilot’s dream.

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Captain Baker started his career at West Point and entered the Army.

Afterwards, he was headed to medical school but a buddy helped him realize flying fighter jets for the Navy was infinitely more exciting.

(Thus his call name “Beetle,” after Beetle Bailey from the Army). Now with a 20-year career behind him, Captain Baker is an accomplished F-18 fighter pilot, completed two deployments embarked on USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), lived in Germany, Italy, England (Oxford University as a Senior Fellow at St. Antony’s College), and two deployments embarked in USS Enterprise (CVN 65) in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

But Captain Baker isn’t the stereotypical stodgy military brass.

Easy going and positive, he’s got a few funny stories to tell about his adventures. He has already fallen in love Key West’s clear blue skies because really let’s face it, as he says, “Flying is awesome.”

9. How high have you flown? Let’s just say 50,000 and leave it at that.

10. What was your first thought this morning? I love Daylight Savings.

11. Favorite guilty pleasure? Twizzlers.

12. What misconception do people have about the Navy? People don’t realize how young, professional and diverse the Navy is.

13. If not the Navy, then what dream job would you have? Professional soccer player, Barcelona, Real Madrid or my favorite team, Bayern Munich.

14. If you could change someone’s opinion, what would it be? People are too pessimistic. They need to see the glass as half full, not half empty.

Baker has logged more than 3,400 flight hours, 104 combat sorties and 778 carrier landings.

His individual awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with combat V, five Strike/Flight Air Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals (one with combat V), Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Commander Carrier Air Wing One Pilot of the Year, and the LCDR Michael Longardt Award for Leadership from Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic.

n nearly every nook and cranny of military life there’s tradition. One favorite, which extends to every branch of service and government, is the challenge coin.

Challenge coins are small coins that are custom made to display an individual military organization’s insignia or emblem. For some higher ranking officers, diplomats, and members of government, custom coins are also crafted.

They are awarded to personnel in recognition of accomplishments from unit commanders with the purpose of raising troop morale. The coins themselves can be made of simple metals like pewter while some of the more important coins are fashioned from 24k gold. Some say the tradition is rooted in the RoCONTRIBUTED/ LEE DIEHL man Empire, and its custom of awarding coins to soldiers for their achievements.

Other competing origin stories stem from WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. The popularity of the challenge coin has extended outside of the military — police departments, fire departments, and other fraternal organizations now produce their own coins. NASCAR, the NFL, Civil Air Patrol, and the Eagle Scouts have also made their own coins.

But exactly how do you “challenge” someone?

To initiate a challenge, the challenger need only pull their coin from their pocket and slap it down on the table or bar. Those who have been challenged are to then pull out their own coins in a “coin check.” Don’t have a coin? Then buy a drink for the challenger. Do have a coin? The challenger buys.

There are some variations, of course. For instance, everyone in a group must buy a drink for the “highest ranking” coin. For example, President of the United States coinholders may never have to buy a drink again. Even local American Legion Post 154 have put their twist on the tradition of challenging.

G.I.s would be wise to have their coins handy on Veterans Day, if only as a story prompt. Don’t be caught empty handed.

t $130,000,000 a pop, the F-35 better be cool and, well, they kind of are. The new F-35’s Joint Strike fighter jets are the fifth generation of U.S. aircraft available in 3 versions: the F-35A (Alpha), the F-35B (Bravo) which is able to do vertical take off and landing, and the F-35C (Charlie) with an aircraft carrier tailhook. Dubbed “the quarterback of the sky,” what makes them so special?

First, the advanced technology or Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS) allows the plane to basically fly itself. Now, pilots will spend less time operating the plane and can focus more on their mission.

Second, it is the first jet with a pilot visualization system or DAS (Distributed Aperture System). This is a system of infrared cameras on the plane allowing the pilot to see in any direction, even “through” the aircraft. The pilot’s helmet (average cost $400,000) will seemingly look through the floor of the airplane and track anything with a heat sensor — wayyy cool.

The F-35’s were conceived in the early ’90s, but not contracted until 2001, and now finally being tested in 2016. Called out for being billions over budget and “most expensive weapon in history,” the new jet is having to prove its salt.

But it also has the potential of being the most stealthy and lethal weapon, aside from the advancement of drones. Pilots who previously flew Super Hornets for the Navy are now being retrained to fly the F-35 C, and it is happening here in Key West.

C/O of the NAS Captain Baker has welcomed ten F-35C (Navy-Aircraft carrier versions) to practice in Key West. “They are the wave of the future in order to keep up with our adversaries,” said Captain Baker.

The Boca Chica NAS did a 2013 environmental impact study and prepared to have the jets test fly in local skies. “This version of F-35 is not louder than the Hornet,” reassures Trice Denny, NAS public affairs officer, addressing usual local concern about jet noise. “It may sound different but it is not louder.”

he difficult transition of both deploying and then returning from a theater of war is a long and humbling experience. Here’s what DOESN’T help: When someone asks, “Did you kill anyone?”

The first time someone asked me that, I didn’t know what to say. This person was a full-grown adult, who I assumed would know better. But then it continued to happen. I would say I’ve been asked that question at least two dozen times. Even more puzzling, is the perGABRIEL ception that veterans WANT to answer that question.

SANCHEZ Here’s the long answer, it’s complicated.

The months that followed saw the Marine Corps, her family, and even his own leadership point the finger at Petty Officer F. Following a lengthy investigation, and months of blame seeking, the incident was deemed a freak accident. But this wasn’t the end of the ordeal for Petty Officer F. For years I saw my friend struggle with guilt, nightmares, PTSD, self-hate and depression.

So, imagine the difficulty Petty Officer F faces every single time someone asks him, “Did you kill someone?” It’s complicated.

Regardless of how war and its after-effects are portrayed in popular culture, I assure you it is very different. And while there are so many questions we can ask our veterans to better understand their experiences, asking someone if they took someone’s life, regardless of the situation, has no place. There is nothing to gain from this knowledge, there is no purpose in asking about the morbid details of someone’s death.

I challenge you to thank a service member this Veterans Day, and when the time comes to ask something, ask them “How many people did you help?”

That’s an order.

B

aptist Health South Florida and Fishermen’s Community Hospital have signed a letter of intent to explore a potential affiliation between the two organizations and are now working toward a definitive agreement expected to be formalized sometime in 2017.

Fishermen’s Board of Trustees Chairman Peter Chapman says the letter begins a period of due diligence that will open up detailed discussions between the two entities.

He said the Board, made up of Marathon residents, will remain as well as the medical staff and support staff.

Chapman says the board’s goal is for Baptist to continue to operate Fishermen’s as a critical-access

Domestic Abuse Shelter regains state certification

Monroe County’s only domestic violence center, Domestic Abuse Shelter, Inc. (DAS), regained their state certification from Florida’s Department of Children and Families (DCF), lifting a six-month temporary suspension. As required by DCF’s emergency order, DAS worked collaboratively with the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence (FCADV) and Victim Response, Inc. (The Lodge) to change its management and operations.

“Our goal from the very beginning of this process was to ensure that survivors of domestic violence and their children have access to critical lifesaving shelter, services and programs within Monroe County and that these services remain available long-term,” said DAS Board President, Jennifer Powell. “The past six months was intensive; however, this process resulted in an organization that is stronger and sustainable.”

In the interim, FCADV and The Lodge provided seamless, uninter-

hospital and expects the affiliation will expand healthcare services in Marathon.

“The benefits are that Baptist has strong financials, new technology, and strong leadership that will ensure long term sustainability of health care in Marathon,” he added.

“There are certain things we can do such as sharing doctors and installing new equipment that would benefit our community – possibly even providing cancer treatment.”

Fishermen’s Community Hospital has operated as a non-profit, community-owned hospital since July 1, 2011. Baptist is affiliated with Mariners Hospital in Tavernier and Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables and owns six other facilities in South Florida including Homestead Hospital, Baptist Children’s Hospital and West Kendall Baptist Hospital.

A significant element to DAS’s longterm success is community involvement throughout the Keys.

“We realize that in order to have strong community partners, we need to be a trusted partner and resource in the community,” said Powell.

Zonta and the Marathon Business and Professional Women, in partnership with DAS Board members, led an unprecedented number of fundraisers for survivors and their children accessing emergency services in Monroe County.

‘39 Steps’ is at MCT

arathon Community Theatre (MCT) will open the new season with a fast-paced, funny whodunit — “The 39 Steps” by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan. “The 39 Steps” is an Alfred Hitchcock juicy spy story with a dash of Monty Python.

The play won two Tony awards and a Drama Desk Award in 2008.

The cast of four introduces 30-plus zany characters. It is packed with action and will keep you laughing.

There’s a bit of romance too, of course.

The play features MCT veterans, Noelle Belden, Michael Chaplin, John Schaefer and newcomer, Brian White. Directing the play is Marilyn Tempest, assisted by Mary DeMartino; the producer is Riet Steinmetz.

The story contains dozens of characters, brought to life by only four talented and versatile actors.

The Eden of Big Pine Key

Grimal Grove launches crowdfunding campaign KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

A

fter working through $850,000 in fines on the once unusable Big Pine Key land, Grimal Grove’s nonprofit owner Patrick Garvey hopes he can now share the story of Grimal Grove and its late horticulturist property owner Adolph Grimal. On Sunday at Tropic Cinema in Key West, an eightminute documentary detailed the beginnings of the grove, which has been around since the ’60s, and its descent into untamed wilderness. That is, until Garvey saw a diamond in the rough.

“It was a lot of stress,” Garvey said in the movie trailer premiere.

“I got to know these trees well, the spirit of the land.”

Interesting Fact: The film’s editor Mark Yasenchak said Adolph Grimal made his own soil. While this isn’t uncommon, Grimal took the task very seriously sifting dirt and gravel into different classifications. If an exotic tree needed acidic soil, he collected urine from his guests, and his own, to add to the soil.

The documentary, being produced by Diomedes Raul Bermudez of Purpose Films, has generated some interest from PBS, but needs to overcome some hurdles – mostly financial. “It’s a story with a lot of layers,” Bermudez said. “This documentary is important to help preserve this property’s rich history.”

The grove is home to many tropical plants found nowhere else in the United States, including a fruiting cacao tree among others, and an intricate cistern system.

The ultimate goal of Garvey is to have a sustainable, truly edible botanical park and educational center.

hen I started my campaign for Marathon City Council way back on the sweltering summer day of June 9, I vowed not to take a single penny in campaign contributions. Candidates in the past had raised more than $20,000 to vie for a chance to sit in one of those five Council seats…

everything I believed when I set out to run a campaign for local office like no one has done before. Public service shouldn’t just be about running for office and collecting checks. I realize that running a large campaign takes money and contributions… but in a small island community like ours, a candidate should be known for his or her service to the community long before the first campaign for public office. To those voters who turned out and made me the number one vote-getter in the City Council race, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will work for the next three years to continuously earn the trust you placed in me.

Seeing as today — Friday, Nov. 11 — is Veterans Day, our deep heartfelt thanks needs to go out to our veterans and members of our Armed Forces, past and present. The holiday originated as Armistice Day to recognize the end of the World War in 1918 (before anyone could fathom that there would be a second World War). In 1954, Congress changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day, acknowledging that all veterans need to be celebrated and recognized for their service and contributions.

In my family, my father was an Air Force veteran during the Korean War years. My mother taught children of servicemen and women attending base schools overseas. My sister served as a combat medic in Iraq with the Army, and her husband is heading back to Iraq right now for his fifth tour as a combat medic. We all know people who have sacrificed their homes, their family and friends, and their safety and comfort to serve the nation. Some sacrificed their health and their very lives so that I have the freedom to write this column, and you have the freedom to read it in the relative peace and safety of your homes. We owe veterans and their families every bit of gratitude we can muster, for it’s because of them that it’s always a great day to be an American.

emember those small “Buy One, Get One Free” cards you pick up at a hotel or airport? Those are now a thing of the past with the advent of a smartphone app.

It’s greener, easier, and available anytime to anyone. That was the thinking behind David Thibault’s new app, Free Libations. Having been in the hospitality business for more than 25 years, Thibault has created an app that promises a free drink, benefitting both businesses and customers alike.

“Hundreds of BOGO cards would go out a month,” said Thibault, who spent years as a concierge, “so when the iPhone came out, I just figured there had to be a better way to do this.”

Free Libations is in the beginning stages and Thibault, a 15-year resident, is using Key West as the test market. Users can download the app for free to a phone and log in with Facebook. (Logging in with Facebook ensures the reviews are authored by real people, not anonymous internet trolls.) The phone’s GPS feature registers the city and shows users available restaurants with happy hour specials.

The restaurants marked by the signature “olive” logo will be able to scan the phone and register the customer for the free drink. Businesses registered with the app will attract customers and anyone with the app can partake in not just the “BOGO” but any other specials or advantages being offered. Some restrictions apply, and there is a 12-hour waiting period for the first free drink.

“Participating bars include Island Dogs, Half Shell Raw Bar, The Rum Barrel, Charlie Mac’s, Turtle Kraals, and Señor Frog’s. We’re looking for more.”

“I started from zero, just an idea,” said Thibault. Thibault partnered with Ben Hennington of the Sunset Social Drinking Club for managing and marketing and used local website designers 7th Wave.

After great success during Parrothead week, Thibault is taking the app to Nashville and developing the next market there. Soon cities around the country will have affiliated bars and restaurants and free drinks for everyone with a phone — which is basically everyone.

Although the app is a mere two months old, developments are in rapid progress such as working with hotel concierges, being able to buy drinks for other people, coordinate scavenger hunts between bars, and a special Free Libations Tervis cup for more discounts.

Thibault has lots of ideas for the app and Key West undoubtably is the perfect demographic.

artender Lance, or Ralph, or whatever name he goes by, warmed up after a minute of chatting at Barnacle Barney's Tiki Bar on the water behind Bluegreen Resort in Marathon.

Originally from Maine, Lance said everyone's running away from something. Personally, he was fleeing the cold winters up north after he retired from 26 years of teaching elementary students physical education.

A popular drink at the tiki is the Miami Vice, a combination of piña colada and strawberry daiquiri.

The most popular seller at the little poolside tiki bar is the blackened mahi sandwich, but he sticks to the housemade, hand-cut French fries because he’s a vegan.

His favorite part about his job is his cushy hours, working about 20 a week, and the amazing view overlooking the Gulf. "I deal with a lot of tourists, so everyone is usually in a good mood, spends a little money, and then leaves," he said laughing. The bar is also local friendly.

Recently he has been dreaming about his upcoming move to Hawaii with his wife. They are expecting their first grandchild and are moving to Honolulu to be with their family.

In the meantime, he's happy serving up drinks at Barney's. The bar plays live music five nights a week and has BINGO on Tuesdays and trivia on Wednesdays. Happy hour is daily from 3 to 6 p.m.

he Marathon campus of the Florida Keys SPCA is working on its first year celebration, a fundraising prom on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 6 to 10 p.m. on the lighthouse lawn at Faro Blanco Resort. The non-profit is dedicated to protecting abandoned, unwanted, and mistreated animals. The $75 ticket includes a sponsored cocktail hour from Florida Keys Brewing, three-course meal, DJ and dancing and a huge silent auction helping Marathon’s four-legged friends.

“The past year has been amazing,” said Marathon’s FKSPCA Director of Operations Tara Vickrey. “The staff and board have worked together seamlessly and we collaborate well with the Key West campus.”

Vickrey is encouraging everyone to come dressed in their best prom getup, but says it’s optional, as the main goal is to raise money for the animals — 84 of them, who are sheltered at the Aviation Boulevard shelter. “All the proceeds will be used for things like food, medicine and spay and neuter services,” she said.

of director president, said she can’t believe it’s been a year already. “Our family got bigger and we are thrilled to bits about it,” she said from the Key West campus.

“We respond to the needs to the community, and are so glad to be getting to know the Marathon community. We are fortunate to have Tara in Marathon, and Julie Botteri on our board. It’s only going to get better from here.”

Dawkins cited the retention of staff, and increase in volunteers as a great sign of where the shelter is heading in the future.

There are a couple new aspects to this year’s event, most notably the location. It will be held at the Marathon Community Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the soccer fields. In addition to the food, there will be live entertainment, an auction, tribute to the veterans, activities for kids and a fashion show.

“We have some out-of-town restaurants participating,” said event organizer Mallory Morton, adding that she hopes this will eventually become a Keyswide culinary contest. “This year we have a few restaurants coming from Islamorada to test their culinary

skills against our local chefs.”

The event is judged, but the public has a chance to cast a ballot, too, for the people’s choice award.

In 2016, there will be a kids’ area with the usual touch tanks, snow cone station and face painting. The Florida Keys Brewing Company is bringing its own truck (ok, a really groovy VW bus equipped with spigots), and volunteers will also serve domestic brews and wine.

Tickets are $2 each, available at the gate. “Tastes” of the food, appetizer-sized, will cost between one and four tickets.

“We want everyone to go around to all 14 booths and try something from each of them,” Morton said.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Business and Professional Women scholarships for adult and young women.
