King Tides, or the highest tides, are defined as a naturally occurring event a couple times a year around the world. In the past week, Key Westers have experienced excessive flooding due to the King Tides. Water levels rose not just around our beaches and docks, but on our streets, playing fields, parking lots and school yards. Yes, it’s just the usual pull of the moon, the sun, the Earth’s rotation but then again, climate change could be playing a role, too. Regardless, the flooding is an issue. So we asked locals…

“It’s a little bit of both,” said Laurie Bjorkland, “We should be worried about the tides and rising sea levels. Both problems can affect us.”

“I’m not convinced it’s rising sea levels,” said Todd Feit, owner of Island Love Story. “Places that look like they should be flooding, aren’t, so it has to do with sewer and drainage problems. We need to tackle the old sewer and drainage system. But, hey, with the high tide at least Smathers doesn’t smell anymore.”

A planning meeting for I Love Stock Island will be held Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at Stock Island Village Marina for anyone interested in helping with the island-wide cleanup and festival. The new I Love Stock Island Initiative is a not-for-profit (status pending) organization “dedicated to preserving the cultural history of Stock Island by promoting its healthy future through outreach, marketing and spe-

“Take Stock in the Rock” is an island-wide clean up initiative taking place Nov. 19. Incumbent Holly Raschein (R) faces challenger Dan Horton (D) in the race for State Representative, representing district 120. The district comprises all of the Keys, much of the uninhabited Everglades, and cities on the mainland including Homestead. Raschein was first elected in 2012, and Horton defeated Kevin Diaz (D) in the primary. The term length is two years.

1. Please explain, in layman’s terms, the duties of the elected state representative and the responsibilities of the office.

1. As your representative, my duty is to advocate for this community in Tallahassee. To me, that means working with both Republicans and Democrats to solve issues such as restoring the flow of fresh water into the Florida Bay. It also means fighting against the big corporations and special interests that seek to further their own goals at the expense of the people of Florida.

2. My top priority is protecting our clean water. That starts with restoring the flow of fresh water into the Florida Bay. I was proud to sign the Now or Neverglades Declaration. Sadly, Holly continues to refuse to sign the Declaration.

3. A lot of time. In the past three months alone, we have driven nearly 10,000 miles. I have personally knocked on doors in every community from Key Largo to Key West. I am grateful to this community for its incredible support throughout our campaign.

4. I have refused to take money from big corporations and special interests like Big Sugar and Florida Power & Light (FPL). I will work for the people of this community, and not for the special interests that run Tallahassee by buying off our elected officials. I encourage you to check out our campaign finance records, compare them to Holly’s, and then decide for yourself.

HOLLY RASCHEIN (R), incumbent

1. My job is to represent the needs and issues of our unique district in Tallahassee and assist constituents in their interactions with state government.

2. We have a lot of issues we are tackling in the Keys, so it is hard to pick just one. My top three are water quality, insurance rates (both property insurance as well as the worker’s compensation rate increases the Legislature will be trying to control on behalf of our small businesses) and workforce housing.

3. I am a full-time resident of Key Largo. The only time I am not here is when I am fulfilling my duties as your state representative in Tallahassee.

4. I believe that the experience I bring to this office is my greatest asset. I worked for our two prior state representatives before being elected myself, so I have a long history and deep understanding of our local issues. I also know the legislative process and have built great relationships with the key players in Tallahassee. I know who to work with and how to get things done, which is how I have been able to deliver results on a variety of issues for our district over the past four years in office.

Gras-like Krewe Mardi events slated troupes for 2017 model ugly jackets

The Mystick Krewe of Key West held its Ugly Jacket Party on Oct. 15 raising money for Luci’s Fund for Animals in Distress and honoring the 2017 king and queen of their Mardi Gras type events. The Krewe is made up of 10 troupes with 15 members a piece and each troupe represents a special aspect of Key West. In February, the Krewe will throw its Marrakesh Express ball.

n Nov. 8, Florida Keys residents will have a chance for their voice to be heard on the issue of a genetically modified mosquitoes (GMO) trial in either the Key Haven area or elsewhere in the Keys. Originally just a question for Key Haven residents (outside of Key West), the query is now on the ballot for all Monroe County voters to vote “yes” or “no” regarding the release of scientifically-altered mosquitoes in their area.

The referendum is “non-binding” meaning it’s simply a survey for the Florida Keys Mosquito Control Board to gauge public sentiment.

The referendum will read “trial in Monroe County” for all voters except Key Haven residents. Key Haven ballots will specifically ask if GMO mosquitoes should be released on Key Haven. The result may or may not affect Mosquito Control Board’s decision to release Oxitec’s GMO mosquitoes but it is not concerned about the release of MosquitoMate’s mosquitoes which are infected with a bacterium because they are not genetically altered insects.

his is the kind of story that makes you smile. Twentyfive years ago, two young girls met working at the former boutique, Lido, on Duval Street. They became inseparable best friends and since have shared just about everything life has to offer except one thing, their own business. Now Meredith Bollong and Tania Cole have combined their years of friendship and fashion into the already fabulous new store downtown, Vignette.

Different paths still lead them to the same dream. Back in 1999, Bollong, with partner Michael Min Khin, opened the successful Bésame Mucho in Bahama Village and Cole went on to manage Blue Boutique for 18 years. When Blue closed last June, all three saw an opportunity to partner in retail.

In three short months, they redid the previous “Cottage” space at 526 Southard Street, found new clothing lines and created the kind of store women in this town crave.

With the help and support of many friends who pitched in, they opened the doors in October.

“The opportunity was there with Tania’s passion for clothing,” said Bollong, who still remembers Cole coming to Key West with

This week is filled with crazy activities, and although there is a ton of stuff going on, some of the parties do double duty raising funds for those in the community in need of some extra funds.

SATURDAY NIGHT October 22 The annual Goombay two-day festival celebrates Bahamian-American contributions to the City of Key West and includes Bahamian food, arts and culture, Junkanoo parade and more. The event hosted by Bahama Village Community Coalition showcases the talents of the Gerald Adams Steel Pan Band, Bahama Village Music Program, KWHS Conchettes, Bahama Village Social Club, and more.

FRIDAY NIGHT October 21 Fantasy Fest King and Queen Coronation Ball at 6 p.m. at Casa Marina.

This event raises money for AIDS Help and is the culmination of the eight-week-long fundraising campaign by the four candidates vying for a king and queen crown.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at KWHS and why are they important to you?

I am vice president of my class and am also involved in NHS, CSALT, peer mentoring, yearbook, and soccer. I enjoy being involved in my school and community because I like to meet new people, help others, and be a leader.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at KWHS and why?

It is hard to pinpoint one inspiration. At KWHS, there are so many talented kids with amazing qualities.

All the time there seems to be a new record broken, a new club started, or a new competition won. All of the students inspire me in their own ways. They make me want to branch out and try new things and to be the best version of myself I can be.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why?

Mrs. Ford’s AP Language class has most definitely prepared me for life after high school. Along with excellently teaching her students the standard curriculum, she was able to teach us valuable life lessons that I will continue to apply to my life long after high school.

What is your favorite social media and why? Who do you follow?

My favorite social media is Instagram. I love being able to capture memories and share them with others. I follow my friends and my favorite celebrities like Selena Gomez and Zac Efron.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges?

The biggest challenge facing the Keys is the high cost of living. This makes it extremely difficult for young professionals and families to make the Keys their home. It leaves us in the position where we lack the community resources to provide ideal educational, social, and economical opportunities.

T

here is more than one way to get stoned in the Keys, but a favorite among locals is fishing for stone crab. Season opened on Oct. 15, so below are some rules and tips to get stoned legally.

The minimum size of a claw is 2 ¾ inches, measured from the inside of the knuckle joint to the lower tip of the immovable claw. Regular citizens are permitted five recreational traps per person, or they can catch them with a dip net. In no way, shape, or form can a stone crabber puncture, hurt, hook, or injure the crab’s body — stone crab might be the Florida Keys’ most important renewable resource since they regenerate new claws to replace the ones on the dinner plate. Bag limit is one gallon of claws per person, or two gallons per vessel, whichever is less.

Egg bearing crabs have orange egg sacks affixed underneath their bodies — do not take the claw off egg-bearing stone crab; it’s illegal.

The easiest way to get stoned is to buy a trap kit from a local store like Cudjoe Sales or Marathon Lumber and Building Supply. Kits run about $20 per trap, and will come with everything to get wet, except the concrete. Trap size is 2 by 2 by 2 feet and can be made of wood, wire, or plastic.

Most locals prefer plastic traps for durability, bait them with a pig foot (yes, you read that correctly) and place them in grassy spots next to sandy spots. Check them out every 10-14 days.

For regular citizens, the “R” must be visible on all “R”ecreational buoys. Most buoys are white, but some people decorate their buoys, and that is allowed as long as the “R” is still visible. Each recreational trap must also have trap owner’s information — name and address — affixed or etched into the trap. The traps have a biodegradable slat that will allow the stone crab to escape should a boat take the buoy for a ride, or a storm washes the whole trap away.

Successful trappers say a good catch is dependent on a good “pull” — clean the throat of the trap from debris growing on it with a couple passes of your hand every time you check the harvest.

Once a trap is pulled, a quickhand or tongs will help wrangle the wily beast before the claws are removed. Legally both claws, if of size, can be removed, but some leave the smaller one to help the crab defend itself, and collect food faster. The renewable delicacy don’t need its claws to eat, but can eat more and regenerate the claw faster with one. To see a video on how to remove the claws, visit myfwc.com.

ey West is known for its devotion to good food.

Just ask the man cooking it for us, Chef Bill Lay. Chef Lay is the owner, operator for OnPointe Restaurant Group which owns LaTrattoria old town, LaTrattoria Oceanside, Virgilio’s, Catered Affairs of Key West and now Saltwater Sandwiches at the VFW. It would be impossible to find a local (or countless tourists) who have not enjoyed, savored and even swilled one of Chef Lay’s culinary creations.

Originally a New Yorker, Chef Lay studied architecture at The New York Institute of Technology but chose to build a food empire instead.

“I fell in love with the restaurant business. Love the action, love the people, and love the interaction with new people on a daily basis. Although I didn't go to culinary school, I have trained under some fantastic chefs,” said Lay, who started in New York and traveled around the country cooking before settling in Key West 18 years ago.

Taking over the famed La Trattoria and Virgilio’s in 2006, Lay called it, “a dream come true for me. I cherish everyday for that decision.” Lay has won the Bubbas Award for Best Martini at Virgilio’s (no small feat in this town), Wedding Wire Top 5% caterer in the country, and crowned himself “Most Likely to Never Run a 5K.” With self-deprecating humor, unfathomable energy and drive and excellent taste in food, Chef Lay keeps Key West’s food reputation first rate, like himself.

A

s a musician, Carter Moore is a “jack of all trades and master of one: bass guitar.” While Carter can be seen around town playing drums, guitar and harmonica (sometimes all at once), playing bass is his true passion. He prides himself on playing bass “correctly” and being a professional, local musician.

Carter was drawn to the drums at a young age but was forced into playing the bass at around age 10 at the behest of his

musical father. (Ironically, Carter is now pushing his own son to play bass, too.) Carter's musical education started at his childhood home in Muskegon, Michigan where his father played piano and sang. At age 19, Carter moved to Detroit and did a lot of gigging, most notably with Joey Pullin and the Missiles, a Motown-meetsbig-band outfit with lots of horns and singers.

While this time period was challenging for him as a young musician, Carter attributes much of his success to this part of his musical journey.

Carter went on to tour around Michigan, recorded an album with John Mellenkamp's band, played and recorded with the Jo Gage Band, tried his luck in Los Angeles and even owned Moore Music, a music shop in his hometown of Muskegon, Michigan for awhile.

In 1993 Carter began spending winters in Key West when his cousin told him he'd like it because “it's laid back like you.” In 2014 when he moved to Key West as a full time musician, it was only natural that he hooked up with local musicians Woody Jenkins and Deb Hudson to play in their Motown show. These days you can hear Carter filling in around town on various instruments in various venues.

On Tuesdays he's a solo artist on Sunset Watersports' Sip & Sail Sunset Cruise — it's a nice two-hour set with an eclectic mix of covers from Cab Calloway to Tom Petty and some originals like “Johnny and June” (recording available on ReverbNation.com). His newest venture is with local band DWC Strain with Wayne Sorbelli, and David Warren. DWC Strain will be playing at the Gas Monkey on Monday, Oct. 24 and The Bull on Thursday, Oct. 27. Starting in November, DWC Strain will be the featured house band at The Gas Monkey every Friday and Saturday from 7-11 p.m.

rad is a simple man living a simple life. “A shot of Jameson, room temperature,” he said is his favorite drink to serve at 2 Cents Restaurant and Pub located at 416 Applerouth Lane in Key West. “And, it’s just my favorite all around.”

What makes his shot of Jameson extra special, he says, is that it’s served with a smile.

Other favorites include the Bang Bang Basil and Hibiscus Jalapeño Martini.

Brad has been serving drinks and bacon there since it opened in 2011. “I love who I work with, we are all close friends and it is nice to work somewhere where you don’t have to make up excuses,” he said. “This place speaks for itself, and everyone loves it.”

For food, 2 Cents is known for their bacon happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. daily, where guests receive a complimentary strip of bacon as an appetizer and then roll the dice to see what price they will pay for the drinks they order.

He has been in the Keys for the past 15 years on and off, and enjoys traveling with his wife, Beth. They recently returned from Norway, but he says the best trip he’s been on was when they visited Vietnam.

he Key West World Championship Powerboat races aren’t just for adults to “ooh” and “aah” over some racing machines, but for kids, too.

But some local students may not have the opportunity to see the boats or races at all. Senior Vice President of First State Bank Kurt Lewin, Super Boat International President Jim Carbonell, and attorney Robert Spottswood saw the opportunity to create a sponsorship for high school kids in marine studies programs to get up close to action. Interest in the marine industry is natural for Keys kids having grown up with the ocean as their backyard. Many of them drive boats before cars.

all stemming from their love of marine technology.

“It’s a chance for the kids to actually see what they are learning up close and personal,” said Catlett. “Where else can they see the latest technology like a surface drive or a bravo drive? They are the next generation of mechanics and engineers for the marine world.”

He credits the powerboat racers and mechanics for generating enthusiasm for the kids in the marine field.

“This year many kids will be able to be shadow mechanics and work with the teams. There’s no where else to get this kind of experience,” he said.

Coral Shores is now one of five high schools in the country partnering with Yamaha to help kids get marine industry certification and a step up for their future.

“I’m bringing 100 kids this year,” said Catlett, “I tell them all to talk and ask questions, make the most of it.”

The 36th annual Key West World Championships run from Sunday, Nov. 6 to Sunday, Nov. 13. The dry pits are at the Truman Waterfront and the races happen in Key West Harbor.

his past Saturday more than 34 teams and 200 people walked to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Knight Pier was a sea of pink, as marchers gathered for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. The event embraced a theme — “no one walks alone” with breast cancer. tarting on Sunday afternoon, and leaving a four-mile trail of horror, the zombies will be taking over the streets of Key West from Fort East Martello to Duval Street. Zombies and zombie hunters will creep through Key West on two wheels for the sixth annual bike ride.

What started as a couple hundred people six years ago under the creative and creepy direction of WeCycle owner Evan Haskell and WonderDog Studio’s Marky Pierson, has grown into one of the biggest events the island offers. (Last year, it’s estimated there were more than 8,500 walking dead out searching for fresh brains.) The family-friendly event starts with a kid’s zone, DJ Bell, live mural painting, food, drinks and face and body painting from 2 to 6 p.m. at Fort East Martello. At about 6 p.m., the zombies set off.

“The Zombie Bike Ride embodies the creative culture and spirit the Florida Keys are known for,” said Key West Art and Historical Society Executive Director Michael Gieda at Fort East Martello. “We are happy to support the event by offering the

Fort as the event’s starting point and family-friendly pre-party.”

When the zombies leave the fort, they will be taking up all four South Roosevelt lanes to travel west toward Atlantic Boulevard, passing Higgs Beach onward to Duval Street. ZombieFest takes place between the 100 to 300 blocks of Duval Street with official parties listed at zombiebikeride.com.

The registration fee enters cyclists into special drawings and supports parade costs, including motorcycle police escorts, trash and recycling, permits, and donations to Montessori Children’s School and The Key West Art and Historical Society.

The founders encourage families to participate in the ride (with protective helmets for children) and stress that participants do not need to do the entire route. There will be no parking available for vehicles at the Fort.

Have a clinical breast exam These can be performed by a doctor or nurse practitioner at either an OB/GYN office or clinic.

A positive finding of cancer Consult with your primary doctor and oncologist about the right course of treatment. Options include lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, total mastectomy and breast reconstruction can all be done at both hospitals. Chemotherapy and radiation are available at 21st Century Oncology Center in Key West. Mariners Hospital in the Upper Keys also has an oncology suite where chemotherapy can be delivered according to an oncologist’s plan. Many Keys patients travel to the mainland for further treatment. After treatment, women should continue to regularly visit their doctors for further checks, including clinical breast exams.

If the patient is between the ages of 50 and 64, she may be eligible for the Florida Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, FBCCP. In Key West, this can only be done at Womankind; in Marathon, women can be screened for the program at Community Health Center of South Florida (CHI). The patient is given a prescription to go to Fisherman's Hospital for a free mammogram, diagnostic mammogram and biopsy if needed. The program also pays for surgery and/or chemotherapy and reconstructive surgery.

Get a mammogram Mammograms are available at every Keys hospital. Both Lower Keys Medical Center and Fishermen’s Hospital also have ultrasound equipment, and LKMC will offer 3D mammography in 2017.

The hospitals often run specials during October for women without insurance, offering mammograms for a low-cost, flat fee. The Zonta Club of Key West and the Zonta Club of Marathon also offer vouchers for free mammograms for women who qualify. There are also diagnostic centers that provide mammograms, such as Mammography of Key West or the mobile HerScan. Check to see if the service includes a reading from a certified radiologist, or if that requires an extra payment.

No findings Whew! Schedule next year’s mammogram.

Step 3B Abnormal results.

Women who have been diagnosed with abnormalities should schedule further testing as soon as possible at the local hospital. The hospitals offer diagnostic mammograms conducted by an on-site radiologist. Biopsies can be performed during an ultrasound, and results will be sent to the patient and her doctor within 24 hours.

Town hall meeting addresses VA healthcare
