Monroe County’s Human Services Advisory Board a Blessing On behalf of Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the Florida Keys (VNA/ Hospice), I wanted to take the time to publically thank the Human Services Advisory Board (HSAB) and the Monroe County Commission for their tremendous dedication and the invaluable service they provide to not only to the residents of Monroe County but also to the numerous non-profit health and human service organizations that bridge the “gap” by providing much needed services and programs to residents of the Florida Keys.

The HSAB voluntary advisory board has a daunting — and sometimes thankless — task to ensure the county’s $2 million allocation is properly dispersed to organizations that have a proven track record in providing quality support services and programs that will enhance the quality of life for residents in need. As a volunteer TDC Cultural Umbrella board member representing District 5, I cannot begin to tell you about the insurmountable hours that go into reviewing and grading grant applications such as the HSAB application process. With the ever changing reductions in Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance reimbursements, as well as federal and state cutbacks in funding for health

and human services, the HSAB is a critical component for the health and well-being of our community.

VNA/Hospice is extremely thankful for the continuous support that we receive from the HSAB. The reimbursable grants that are distributed annually help to offset the cost of providing over $150,000 in charity care to the uninsured and underinsured annually. This year we were very blessed to receive an increase to help fund a new Palliative Care initiative –specialized care for people whose lives are changing when they are affected with a lifealtering or chronic illness or disease.

Thanks to the increase, we were able to leverage those fund for additional grants earmarked for this special program. We still need additional philanthropic support from donors to reach our goal of $250,000 to initiate the program, and we are well on our way thanks to the HSAB and the generous support of the Ocean Reef Community Foundation.

All of the wonderful non-profit organizations that apply to the HSAB want to ensure that residents and visitors alike have the same access to health care and human service programs that one would receive on the mainland. We could not do it without the support of the County Commissioners and the remarkable members of the HSAB Advisory Board. So on behalf of all the residents and the nonprofit community that provides these invaluable services – thank you – thank you – thank you!

Village voters to hear from candidates Weekly Staff report

n Monday, Oct. 3, the residents of the Village of the Islamorada will have the opportunity to hear the candidates’ positions on various issues. In addition, members of the community are invited to pose questions via email by Friday, Sept. 30.

All five candidates for the village — David Boerner, David Purdo, Cheryl Mead, Jill Zima-Borski and incumbent Mike Forster — will be present.

The forum will be held at the Islamorada Moose Lodge beginning at 6:30 p.m. The moderator will be Kim Sovia-Crandon and the panelists will be David Goodhue of The Reporter and Sara Matthis of The Weekly Newspapers.

Kim Sovia-Crandon is a 40-year resident of the Florida Keys and a former congressional aide for Ron Saunders.

“The Keys are changing, specifically the Village of Islamorada and Monroe County,” she said.

“I think it’s necessary to be an informed voter, and that’s why I went ahead and coordinated the forum with the top editors of Keys newspapers.”

County removes 16 derelict vessels

O

ver the summer, the Monroe County Office of Marine Resources has removed 16 derelict vessels – including a 50-foot cabin cruiser and a 32-foot steel sailboat – from public waters of the Florida Keys using a $99,924 grant from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

“We are thankful for the FWC grant, which made it possible for Monroe County to remove these abandoned boats,” said Rich Jones, Monroe County’s Marine Resources Administrator. “This effort helps to improve recreational boating access, eliminates navigation hazards and assists with the recovery of sensitive marine habitats.”

The grant from FWC’s Florida Boating Improvement Program is a significant addition to the approximately $190,000 that Monroe County’s Derelict Vessel Removal Program spends each year to remove an average of 60 derelict vessels.

The $190,000 is funded from the Monroe County’s Boating Improvement Fund, which is generated from recreational vessel registration fees.

These fees also fund other important boating and waterways projects, including channel marker installation and repairs, the vessel pumpout program and boat ramp repairs.

Of the 16 vessels removed during this latest derelict vessel project, the most expensive was a grounded 50foot cabin cruiser that partially blocked the channel entrance to Boot Key. It cost $24,248.

The removal list also included a 20-foot migrant vessel aground in the swimming area of Bahia Honda State Park, a 40-foot houseboat sunken near the navigational channel of Fleming Key Bridge and a 43-foot motor yacht that was unlit and sunken in a heavily trafficked boating area of Boca Chica Channel.

The Monroe County Office of Marine Resources directed the removal of the boats through a competitive program using prequalified contractors. Most of the derelict vessel removals are performed within a week of receiving legal authorization. Enforcement agencies must first mark the derelict vessels and try to track down the last known owners or other responsible parties to inform them of their legal responsibilities to take care of their vessels. It is a misdemeanor to abandon a boat. Even after a boat is removed by the County, efforts continue to get any known owners or other responsible parties to pay the costs.

hildren from Island Christian School took a brief morning break from class to learn how a simple act of kindness can impact a child’s life. The Samaritan’s Purse project, Operation Christmas Child, gathers shoeboxes, stuffs them with essential school supplies, toys, letters, and hygiene products, and delivers them around the world to children in need. On Sept. 20, their national speaker, Annabelle Rosario, was invited to the Island Community Church to speak to students and share her story of hope.

The daughter of a pastor in the Dominican Republic, Rosario came from very humble beginnings. But a shoebox given to her on Christmas, she said, gave her a profound sense of hope in times of hardship and tragedy. Mark the calendar for the international week of gift giving: Nov. 14-21. Island Girl Mini Triathlon Tavernier Creek site The Island Girl Mini Triathlon is set for Sunday, Oct. 30. The triathlon consists of a one-mile paddle, six-mile bike ride, and one-mile run on Old Highway in Islamorada. The paddle portion can be done from either a board or kayak.

cooter and moped crashes are happening on a weekly basis in Key West and rising by 10 percent each year. Trying to pin down a singular cause is impossible but defining trends are emerging that all Key West motorists — car and scooter drivers, local or tourist alike — need to address.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation warns riders to watch out for these key issues: collisions at intersections, inexperience, excessive speed and alcohol. Two wheeled vehicles are less visible to cars but, conversely, car drivers need to pay more attention (get off the phone folks and check your mirrors). Both riders and drivers are encouraged to take a more defensive stance on the roadways. Lastly any motorist should avoid speed, alcohol and drugs at all costs.

“Cars impede the riders right-of-way – cutting them off with a left turn is usually the culprit causing the scooter to t-bone the car. We kill two to three bikers every year in the Keys with that or cutting the rider off coming out of side streets or parking lots,” said Rupert Staudner, manager of Florida Keys 1st Motorcycle Riding School. Staudner would like to see more education for drivers on the rules of the road.

Sunshine Scooter Inc. has two rental locations and about 136 scooters on the road. They follow the City of Key West’s Safety Ordinance Sec. 18381: all rental companies must provide training before allowing riders to leave the parking lot. Also, renters must read the ordinance which details rules such as not driving on sidewalks, passing on the right, or excessive horn use. The ordinance also warns there is no liability insurance. Sunshine Scooter Inc. does provides free helmets, not required by law, and when riders choose not to use one, they must initialize their contract.

“I tell renters the stupidest thing they can do is drink and drive on a scooter. I caution everybody to drive defensively, I do when I am on a scooter,” said Jon Brenner with Sunshine Scooter. Over five years, he said Sunshine Scooter has lost six mopeds in its fleet to crashes.

Looking at statistics and talking with victims, police, doctors and businesses, one thing is clear — when it comes to two wheeled riding in Key West it boils down to patience by all motorists. Practicing caution whether an experienced or inexperienced rider, following the rules of the road and avoiding alcohol could save a life. Remember it’s not the scooter or the car that causes the crash, but the driver.

P

aul Wachter sat with adoring friends, family and new fans at the Looe Key Tiki on Wednesday for the premiere of “Survivor.” Set on the same island in Fiji that Tom Hanks washed up on in the movie “Cast Away,” the 33rd season of “Survivor” stars one of our own — Wachter is a Sugarloaf Key resident, band member of Haywire, and American Marine owner. He’s also 21 pounds lighter than when filming started, although he’s not allowed to divulge much else; no spoilers here.

“Can I get my picture with you?” people kept asking while waiting for the premiere to begin. The premiere actually had two purposes — a night of fun, plus a chance to raise money for Florida Keys SPCA. His wife, Connie, stood proudly by his side, while he helped raise money for the organization that cares for Keys animals.

Standing 6 feet tall, with a tattoo that reads “DILLIGAF” (Do I Look Like I Give A _ _ _ _), Wachter isn’t easily intimidated. Plus, this isn’t his first brush with a television camera. He was in a pilot for a television show “Treasure Warriors,” that never took off.

“I told them that if they made that show like ‘Survivor’ it would have been successful,” said Wachter. A young man who worked on the show, and now works on the “Survivor” team, remembered the comment.

“I got a call and was asked, ‘Do you still have the long hair? Do you still go to the gym?

His answer was yes to all and after 11 months of background checks, Wachter was shipped out to the Fiji island, only to spend the first night in pouring rain as a tropical depression turned to a cyclone in the Pacific. For the first time ever, the contestants were evacuated. (Again, this isn’t Wachter first brush with a hurricane. He’s braced many in his home state of North Carolina, but none in the Keys since taking up residence 10 years ago.)

This season of “Survivor” pits Generation X-ers against Millennials. Wachter is the oldest cast member, born in 1963.

“We didn’t always get a trophy in our time,” he said during the introductions. “We know how to work hard.”

In the first episode, his blue team lost the first challenge and were sent to deliberation to see who was voted off. His name was never mentioned. “Survivor” airs on CBS on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. The teaser for next week included someone being seen by the medics for heart trouble; let’s hope it’s not our hometown celebrity!

here is new campground in Key Largo. Keys Palms Luxury RV Resort at MM 104 is gearing up for its upcoming Oct. 1 opening. It’s situated between the Caribbean Club and the Amoray Dive Resort and offers bayfront amenities.

There are 30 RV sites altogether to accommodate class A and fifth-wheel motorhomes. Eight of them are “pull through” sites, meaning no need to back up. Each site has full electric hookups with 30, 50 or 100 amps. Each site has its own paved patio. There is an in-ground pool and Jacuzzi which both are ADA-compliant. There is wifi, a clubhouse and a fitness room available. There is a public men and women’s shower and coin operated laundry facilities. The site is secure and gated; visitors will be given remote controls for access.

“You can literally walk to go get something to eat, go out for drinks, even go out diving. We’re so close to everything,” said Glenn Cronin, the general manager.

Cronin said that they’re in the permitting phase of 25 dock slips directly in front of the park.

Eventually, this will allow patrons to use the boat ramp directly next door at the Caribbean Club.

If plans go accordingly, longer-term RV-goers can park their trailers at the James Miller, from Eye Catchers, installs Trailer Shop north of the lettering before the campground opens site at MM 106. on Oct. 1.

As for reservations, Cronin says there is one client booked for Oct. 1 so far. (Staff only started accepting reservations in mid-August.) Sites will be rented by the night, week or month.

“Well-behaved pets are allowed, but not in the pool or community clubhouse,” Cronin said. “I plan on meeting every visitor and doing an initial walk-through of the site to ensure their comfort.

The location is idyllic and convenient. It’s close to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, nightlife, restaurants, shopping and grocery stories. The grounds are pristine and well kept.

Further down the pipeline, Keys Palms Luxury RV Resort owner, Raul Medina, foresees that it may host weddings. It’s bayfront commodities offer sunset views, the perfect backdrop for taking vows.

Considering it’s amenities, location and affordability, its options are endless. For now, its focus remains on getting off the ground and running smoothly to “full-capacity” before embarking on new ventures.

Keys Casual The majority of the events in the Florida Keys all have one thing in common, the Keys Casual dress code. Women typically wear dresses or skirts with sandals as this works for our weather year round. For men the rule is, if you’d wear it fishing, don’t wear it to an event. ‘Raise A Hand,’ buy a book

M

ichelle Bennett has been really busy lately. She’s organizing the Purple Pumpkin Gala for Rett Syndrome in honor of her daughter, Stella, set for Saturday, Oct. 1. It’s a twopart endeavor — one, organize the party and, two, collect the special artist-painted pumpkins from where they’ve been scattered around town.

The works of art, painted on synthetic pumpkins, have been on display all summer at various businesses and public locations. The pumpkins are now being collected and the one that received the most $1 votes will be announced as winner during the gala.

With the voting over, and the tickets to the gala completely sold out, there is still one way to help. Buy the book — “Raise A Hand.” The book was put together by Clint Black’s brother, Kevin, who recruited musicians from every walk of life — Paul McCartney to Dolly Parton — to appear in the coffee table picture book.

Bennett said Kevin Black will be at the gala. He’s been a staunch advocate of Rett Syndrome awareness for the last 13 years since his 16-year-old daughter, Cortney, succumbed to the neurological disorder.

To support Bennett’s important work and to help find a cure, purchase a copy of the book “Raise A Hand.” The cost is $35 and all proceeds go directly to Rettsyndrome.org in hopes of inching closer to a cure for this debilitating disorder. Kevin Black will personally sign it.

Cyclists undertake 100-mile ride to help MARC clients

How long have you been riding? I started riding in 1993, but bought my first road bike in 2013 and that’s when I became more serious.

What made you want to do the 100-mile Tour De Keys? Cycling is definitely my passion and I absolutely love that I can ride for the purpose of helping others. It helps to me to know that in some small way I am making a difference in someone’s life. I cycled the ReMARCable Tour de Keys last year and it’s a great ride, great fun, great fellowship with a great purpose.

Other notable rides/races? I usually try to ride at least three or four centuries every year. Other yearly charity rides include Bike MS Breakaway to Key Largo, which is 150-175 miles and the No Hearts Apart Century Ride.

Favorite race fuel? Tailwind.

lthough the Overseas Trail is largely complete, riding bicycles 100 miles from Key Largo to Key West still presents a challenge. But local riders like these are ready to take on the task to raise money for MARC House, a Keyswide organization which helps local adults who are developmentally challenged.

The second annual Tour De Keys happens on Saturday, Sept. 24.

“Cycling has become a really big sport in the Keys,” said Becki Balcer, Tour De Keys co-director out of Key West, who has completed The Smart Ride through the Keys, and other century rides. “Most of the riders this year are Keys residents.”

The event will be capped at 100 riders, and participants number 83 as of presstime. “You know how people are in the Keys, so it’s very possible we will max out this year,” Balcer said.

Mark Terrill of Islamorada Sports, who hosts 100-mile rides through the Keys frequently, is the other director of this weekend’s race.

Balcer said she’s excited to see a lot of first time riders this year. “It’s reaching a different rider and shows that we will be able to continue to grow the ride,” she said. “And, we couldn’t do it without the volunteers who man the eight water stations throughout the Keys.”

As for the riders, be on the lookout for them this Saturday, Sept. 24 from sunrise until 5 p.m. There are many places where the Overseas Trail ends and cyclists must ride on the shoulder of the bridges. The ride is expected to raise more $15,000 — registration fees plus sponsorships — this year for the MARC Clients. For more information on MARC House, visit marchouse.org.

hat’s better than enjoying a dockside view on a hot summer day at Wahoo’s? Enjoying it while sipping a Key Lime Colada made by Jackie Walling. One of the more popular drinks among guests, the frozen Key Lime Colada has the sweet tang of Key Lime with the right amount of Bacardi Limon rum. The rim of the cup is also garnished with crushed graham cracker.

Unlike the colada, Jackie, a New Jersey native, prefers not to be frozen. “Not dealing with the snow anymore,” tops the list of reasons for her relocation months ago, she said. The slow pace of life took some time to adjust to, but now she says she really likes it. After a month-long road trip with her fiancé, the two found themselves in the Keys to test the employment waters. The couple promptly moved down.

In her downtime she’s paddleboarding and hanging out at the sand bar, in addition to reading Stephen King novels (she’s met him) and comics. When she finds herself on the other side of the bar top, “Jackie Daniels” prefers drinking (you guessed it) Jack Daniels. “My friends would all call me that and I kind of liked it, so it stuck,” she laughed.

Tal Cohen Jazz pianist set to perform Wednesday

O

n Wednesday, Sept. 28, acclaimed jazz pianist Tal Cohen will play at the Moka Café in Tavernier.

Cohen recently graduated from the University of Miami School of Music, where he received a full scholarship and teaching assistantship while completing his masters degree under the mentorship of Martin Bejerano.

He will be joined at Cafe Moka

by Goetz Kujak on drums and Robert Grabowski on bass.

Cohen was born in Israel and owes his musical roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years there. He moved to Perth, Australia as a teenager and earned a bachelors and masters degree in jazz performance at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Cohen has performed at the Melbourne, Australia Jazz Festival, performed a number of shows with world-renowned saxophonist Joe Lovano at the inaugural Perth

International Jazz Festival and was chosen to be a semi-finalist in the Wangaratta Jazz Festival’s 2013 piano competition, Australia’s most renowned jazz competition.

In 2014, Tal Cohen was named the Grand Prize Winner in the prestigious Barry Harris National Jazz Piano Competition in Detroit, Michigan, receiving first place and gaining an opportunity to perform his music at the Main Stage in the 2014 Detroit Jazz Festival accompanied by bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Nate Winn.

The concert is open to the public and begins at 7 p.m. with a $20 cover charge in advance, or $25 at the door. A hero gone too soon

efore last week, I would hear the statistic that 22 U.S. veterans kill themselves every day, and part of me didn’t believe it. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that so many of our best men and women succumb to feelings of hopelessness. Yet, I can relate.

I’m a veteran. And so was my cousin. Past tense.

When I came home, I was different. Once carefree, my persona had become far more serious and stern. I’ll never forget the first family Christmas party I attended and how ashamed I felt to have two family members approach me separately and ask if I was “okay;” especially because I was purposefully trying to mask how “not ok” I was.

But I had someone I could relate to, my cousin Uriel Flores. After graduating Nutley High School in New Jersey, he enlisted in the Navy, became a Corpsman (the Navy’s version of medics), and had a deployment to Iraq already under his belt. Uri kept “his” Marines safe and healthy, and had the type of grit you’d expect from a north New Jersey kid. I eventually found my way into the Navy Riverine Force, whose job it was to conduct maritime security operations on the rivers of Iraq and its surrounding coastal waterways.

Our jobs required extreme skills, physical readiness, and mental strength. We welcomed the challenge. We would both go on to proudly serve multiple tours, pushing our minds and bodies further than we had ever thought we could. Our jobs paralleled each other in many ways, and we would sometimes call each other to laugh and compare our journeys.

We talked about Iraq, coming home, and how different things were. Uri had always been a passionate person with a strong will and I took a lot of comfort knowing I wasn’t alone in readjusting. We talked about how difficult it was for even family to understand our experiences.

The years that followed would be harder than I imagined, and contact with Uri became less and less. Struggling to find balance, I would seek counseling at the veteran’s resource center on campus and for three years, work on myself to find healthy ways to cope with stress. In the end, I graduated the University of Central Florida in 2015, healthy and prepared to continue on with my life.

For reasons that are still unknown, Uri decided to take his life on Sept.

6, 2016, and on Sept. 10, Suicide Prevention Day, my family buried our hero. Aside from sadness, anger, and regret, confusion has dominated my thoughts recently. What would compel someone with a bright future to choose this route? Uri was enrolled at Columbia University in New York.

He was handsome and genuine and loved to laugh. I don’t know what he might have been feeling lately, or what circumstances in life had made him feel like he had no options. These questions linger and hurt immensely.

Perhaps a misconception of veteran suicide is that men and women come back from what they’ve done and feel ashamed. I don’t believe this is the case with Uri. He was proud of his service, and as a Corpsman, he spent his time healing and helping people rather than hurting anyone. He traveled many places and made many friends.

What I do know, is that a strong support system of people who can empower and listen, and have the patience to confront your shortcomings, are the catalyst for improving quality of mind and life. A gesture that simple can make a world of difference to a person struggling to find worth and motivation.

The complex paradigm of veteran suicide will not be solved by a single initiative or by a new President. The solution may be in our communities, with friends and family that listen and encourage. When the community becomes vested in the health and wellness of our veterans, and the issue of veteran suicide isn’t relegated to political talking points or uncomfortable conversation, maybe 22 will be just a number again.

Local suicide rate is double the state rate

S

eptember is Suicide Prevention Month.

Although, in the Keys, the staggering rate of Monroe County Suicide has been a cause for great concern for health care professionals and concerned citizens year round. From 2010 to 2015, 265 individuals committed suicide in the Keys. The data references those who ended their lives in the Keys, whether or not they were permanent residents.

“There is still a lot of research that must be done to determine what the contributing factors are for Monroe County's higher than average death rate over the last few years for suicide as compared to other counties in Florida,” said Alison Morales-Kerr of Florida’s Department of Health in Monroe County.

“Monroe County has the highest average death rate for suicide in Florida as compared to all other counties in Florida over the last five years.”

Data collected by state government puts the average suicide rate at 14.1 per 100,000 residents in the state. In the Keys, it’s 27.1 per 100,000 residentrs.

It was these soaring rates that initially caught the eye of Mary Lou Hoover, an active volunteer in the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention and local Out of the Darkness suicide awareness walk. Following a project spearheaded by her own class of Leadership Monroe, Hoover has kept the initiative going.

This year, Hoover and members of Class 23 will again be participating in the second annual Out of the Darkness walk on Sunday, Nov. 6 to raise awareness.

“We pushed to have open conversations with organizations, governments and the community.

We wanted to get people on board with the fact that we have a serious issue. We needed ways to begin to talk about how we can bring services and support groups into the community,” said Hoover. “Since the project, we started a mental health group in Key West that offers a broad continuum of care. The group is made up of professionals from various facets of the community that have an interest in the mental health and wellbeing of our citizens.”

Key West, along with the rest of the Keys, has large at-risk populations that contribute to the high suicide rate according to professionals.

“There are several populations that are largely at risk in the Keys, including our veteran population, homeless population, L.G.B.T.Q community members, and our transient population,” said Hoover.

This year, the Department of Health in Monroe County has taken additional steps to study, monitor, and identifying factors and predictors of suicide. Through the efforts of DOH-Monroe intern Summer DeBastiani, a doctorate student from the University of Miami, six additional questions about veterans’ mental health were added to survey regarding behavioral risk factors of individuals.

DeBastiani will be pooling data collected throughout the county for the next year to better understand the factors surround the high suicide rate. She said she believes some predictors of suicide amongst Monroe County residents can be linked to social isolation, substance abuse, and limited access to mental health care. She also said evidence shows that although most mental disorders increase the risk for suicide, that major depression and substance use disorders are the most associated with suicide risk.

“Therefore, a population such as Monroe County, that has decreased access to mental health care, increased access to drugs and alcohol, and a large veteran population is more at risk,” she said.

She’s also investigating the number of suicides among actual residents, as opposed to the transient population who end their life in the Keys.

According to the Department of Health, suicide has decreased from the fifth to the sixth leading cause of death in Monroe County for people under the age of 65 since 2011.

“Unfortunately, suicide is still often viewed and described as an individual issue; when it actually impacts families, communities, and society at large,” said DeBastiani.

Swim for the lighthouse ore than 180 athletes competed in a 9-mile open-water swim Saturday in the Upper Keys. Noah Zhang of Jupiter, Florida, finished first in the fourth annual Alligator Lighthouse Swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Zhang, 17, a high school senior at Oxbridge Academy, completed the swim in 3 hours and 46 minutes.

"This is the craziest race I have ever done," Zhang said. "When I came around the lighthouse I saw two turtles and a couple of barracudas,� he said.

Participants swam to Alligator Reef Lighthouse, around the beacon and returned to the Islamorada shoreline.

Islamorada residents David Jacobson, Tracy Collett, Robert Kelley and Eric Wunderlich won the four-person relay division with a time of 4:09:18.

The event was staged as a college scholarship fundraiser for Keys students interested in competitive swimming, but also to raise awareness of a need to preserve the 143-yearold Alligator Reef Lighthouse and five other aging lighthouses off the Florida Keys. — Contributed
