When Lisa was seven months pregnant, something went terribly wrong. Monroe County’s Human Services Advisory Board a Blessing

cooter and moped crashes are happening on a weekly basis in Key West and rising by 10 percent each year. Trying to pin down a singular cause is impossible but defining trends are emerging that all Key West motorists — car and scooter drivers, local or tourist alike — need to address.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation warns riders to watch out for these key issues: collisions at intersections, inexperience, excessive speed and alcohol. Two wheeled vehicles are less visible to cars but, conversely, car drivers need to pay more attention (get off the phone folks and check your mirrors). Both riders and drivers are encouraged to take a more defensive stance on the roadways. Lastly any motorist should avoid speed, alcohol and drugs at all costs.

“Cars impede the riders right-of-way – cutting them off with a left turn is usually the culprit causing the scooter to t-bone the car. We kill two to three bikers every year in the Keys with that or cutting the rider off coming out of side streets or parking lots,” said Rupert Staudner, manager of Florida Keys 1st Motorcycle Riding School. Staudner would like to see more education for drivers on the rules of the road.

Sunshine Scooter Inc. has two rental locations and about 136 scooters on the road. They follow the City of Key West’s Safety Ordinance Sec. 18381: all rental companies must provide training before allowing riders to leave the parking lot. Also, renters must read the ordinance which details rules such as not driving on sidewalks, passing on the right, or excessive horn use. The ordinance also warns there is no liability insurance. Sunshine Scooter Inc. does provides free helmets, not required by law, and when riders choose not to use one, they must initialize their contract.

“I tell renters the stupidest thing they can do is drink and drive on a scooter. I caution everybody to drive defensively, I do when I am on a scooter,” said Jon Brenner with Sunshine Scooter. Over five years, he said Sunshine Scooter has lost six mopeds in its fleet to crashes.

Looking at statistics and talking with victims, police, doctors and businesses, one thing is clear — when it comes to two wheeled riding in Key West it boils down to patience by all motorists. Practicing caution whether an experienced or inexperienced rider, following the rules of the road and avoiding alcohol could save a life. Remember it’s not the scooter or the car that causes the crash, but the driver.

On behalf of Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the Florida Keys (VNA/Hospice), I wanted to take the time to publically thank the Human Services Advisory Board (HSAB) and the Monroe County Commission for their tremendous dedication and the invaluable service they provide to not only to the residents of Monroe County but also to the numerous non-profit health and human service organizations that bridge the “gap” by providing much needed services and programs to residents of the Florida Keys.

The HSAB voluntary advisory board has a daunting — and sometimes thankless — task to ensure the county’s $2 million allocation is properly dispersed to organizations that have a proven track record in providing quality support services and programs that will enhance the quality of life for residents in need.

As a volunteer TDC Cultural Umbrella board member representing District 5, I cannot begin to tell you about the insurmountable hours that go into reviewing and grading grant applications such as the HSAB application process. With the ever changing reductions in Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance reimbursements, as well as federal and state cutbacks in funding for health and human services, the HSAB is a critical component for the health and well-being of our community.

VNA/Hospice is extremely thankful for the continuous support that we receive from the HSAB. The reimbursable grants that are distributed annually help to offset the cost of providing over $150,000 in charity care to the uninsured and underinsured annually. This year we were very blessed to receive an increase to help fund a new Palliative Care initiative –specialized care for people whose lives are changing when they are affected with a life-altering or chronic illness or disease. Thanks to the increase, we were able to leverage those fund for additional grants earmarked for this special program. We still need additional philanthropic support from donors to reach our goal of $250,000 to initiate the program, and we are well on our way thanks to the HSAB and the generous support of the Ocean Reef Community Foundation.

All of the wonderful non-profit organizations that apply to the HSAB want to ensure that residents and visitors alike have the same access to health care and human service programs that one would receive on the mainland. We could not do it without the support of the County Commissioners and the remarkable members of the HSAB Advisory Board. So on behalf of all the residents and the non-profit community that provides these invaluable services – thank you – thank you – thank you!

magine listening to some the biggest names in music while lounging about the only concert venue in the world that can boast views of both the Atlantic and Gulf waters. That dream, which is more than 15 years in works, became a visual reality as city officials unveiled renderings and plans during a presentation for the new Truman Waterfront amphitheater on Tuesday.

The theater, which is yet to be named, is scheduled to start construction in January and comes with an estimated price tag of $3.7 million.

(However, $2 million of that amount will be offset by a grant from the Monroe County Tourism Development Council.)

“I’m feeling good about the design and layout in the park,” said Mayor Craig Cates who has made the proposed Truman Waterfront park project a priority during his first two terms. “We’ve been talking about this for fifteen years and we’re finally moving forward with it. It’s going to be a huge asset for Key West and future events.”

City Engineering Director Jim Bouquet provided the commission with renderings and figures for the amphitheater, which includes plans for 500 permanent seats and additional lawn seating, restrooms, vending areas and a myriad of other features.

“We took direction from Mark Mason [formerly with VMI] and J.L. Jamison [legendary soundman for Jimmy Buffett] and both recommended we look at Clyde Park in Dallas and Cumberland Park in Nashville,” said Bouquet. “Both parks are very unique. We wanted something that accommodates as much opportunity as possible — something that can host large concerts and smaller local events.”

While a maximum capacity has not been determined for the amphitheater, Bouquet said he is confident the venue will accommodate up to 1,500 patrons. That approximates the number in attendance at the recent Keystock concert which featured Huey Lewis and the News.

Mayor Cates and Bouquet both expressed appreciation for the guidance provided by two of the most experienced names in the music business, referring to Mason and Jamison. Bouquet said their input led to many of the amphitheater’s components, including leveled seating and a contemporary, covered stage designed for sound quality.

“The seating will give people a clear view to the stage, no matter where they are,” said Bouquet. “And J.L. [Jamision] said it has to be a good venue, not just for the audience, but for the performers as well.”

The completion date for the amphitheater is planned for August 2017. There is still no word on who will be the first act in the theater, but many residents have already expressed a hopeful wish list that includes Key West’s most famous muse — Jimmy Buffett.

Chris Case plays the island chain

O

ne of the most popular musical performers in the Florida Keys, is Chris Case. He has been playing up and down the Keys from Key Largo down to Key West for 26 years. Although most of his work is performing solo, you will find Chris performing as part of two different duos and four different bands.

Chris played with Barabara Payne, the gospel queen, for 12 years on the road before moving to Daytona Beach. There he was the guitarist for the band named “Windjammer,” voted “Best Island Band” in Central Florida from 1986-1990. “Those were great spring break years as a lead guitar player,” Chris said, adding he has wonderful memories of times when Greg Allman would sit in with the band and play guitar.

He moved down to Key West in 1990 after bumping in to Steve Mellow, the former drummer of Windjammer at Sloppy Joes. “Steve asked me to play a gig that night at the Islander (now the Rum Barrel). We then began playing Sloppy Joe’s every Monday and Tuesday for the next two years.” Since then Chris Case has

Many people remember Chris from the band “Double Bucci” where he played with Carl Wagoner at Boston Billie’s House of Blues (now the Smokin’ Tuna).

“Everything was huge — the steaks, the potatoes, the music!” Today Chris plays everything from calypso to reggae, ska, blues and rock, R&B, Motown.

Chris grew up as a drummer in the Bahamas. His parents were top billed entertainers at resorts and casinos in Bermuda and the Bahamas. His parents would bring Chris and his brother and sister on stage as part of the performance to show that “you're never too young to start.” He grew up immersed in music, so drums came naturally. Then, after listening to the Jimmy Hendrix album, “Are you Experienced,” he started playing the guitar. Soon he found that he had to leave Nassau, Bahamas because all the musicians expected him to play drums, and not guitar.

Chris speaks fondly of Key West and the camaraderie within our music community. He really enjoys playing with bass players Keith Ricks, and Samson Ramos, and the blues harp player Jersey Slim. “I am very thankful to Michael McCloud for setting me straight on how to perform as a single act. He was, and still is, the best.”

here’s a hidden gem tucked away across the street from Tropic Cinema inside The Saint Hotel. Passing a giant throne and velvet seating in the lobby, bartender Paul, hailing from London, shows off his St. Clement, a delicious, but dangerous cocktail named after a traditional English nursery rhyme “Oranges and Lemons.”

“I fell in love with Key West 14 years ago, and then I fell in love,” said Paul, who has made his home in Key West for the past two and a half years. He squeezed fresh lemons and oranges right before the customer’s eyes and then strained the concoction before serving.

But the St. Clement, as delicious as it is, isn’t what Paul is famous for, his Bloody Mary takes top 10 lists across the nation and overseas. The bar is topped with mason jars filled with marinating cherry tomatoes, and fresh bacon, and pastries to top the Bloody Marys off.

A friend, and patron that evening, said he’s the best in town when it comes to making drinks, but she wouldn’t let him dock her boat. An inside joke, we’re sure.

Before we run out of room, it would be a terrible tragedy to not mention The Saint Hotel’s restaurant, Tempt. Happy hour is from 4:17 p.m. to 7:17 p.m. and they offer gourmet light bites, known as “Scooby Snacks” at that bar – it’s everything but cartoonish.

n Sept. 17, Archbishop Thomas Wenski blessed the renovated parish center for Saint Mary Star of the Sea Basilica, the Convent of the Holy Spirit Sisters and the Adoration Chapel in Key West. The new Klaus Murphy center, named in honor of two former parishioners, is a foundation that provides financial support to organizations whose efforts assist the poor and needy of Key West.

Over the years, this foundation has provided millions of dollars in support of the church’s service efforts to Star of the Sea Outreach Mission, The Basilica School, St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen and a leadership gift of $750,000 towards this renovation. The Convent of the Holy Spirit Sisters has been redesigned to accommodate four Sisters of the Holy Spirit from the Mt. Kilimanjaro province who serve in the school and parish ministries. The fourth Sister Elizabeth Gati, OSS arrived in August.

Local SURVIVES first week TV show stars Paul Wachter of Sugarloaf Key

aul Wachter sat with adoring friends, family and new fans at the Looe Key Tiki on Wednesday for the premiere of “Survivor.” Set on the same island in Fiji that Tom Hanks washed up on in the movie “Cast Away,” the 33rd season of “Survivor” stars one of our own — Wachter is a Sugarloaf Key resident, band member of Haywire, and American Marine owner. He’s also 21 pounds lighter than when filming started, although he’s not allowed to divulge much else; no spoilers here.

“Can I get my picture with you?” people kept asking while waiting for the premiere to begin. The premiere actually had two purposes — a night of fun, plus a chance to raise money for Florida Keys SPCA. His wife, Connie, stood proudly by his side, while he helped raise money for the organization that cares for Keys animals.

Standing 6 feet tall, with a tattoo that reads “DILLIGAF” (Do I Look Like I Give A _ _ _ _), Wachter isn’t easily intimidated. Plus, this isn’t his first brush with a television camera. He was in a pilot for a television show “Treasure Warriors,” that never took off.

“I told them that if they made that show like ‘Survivor’ it would have been successful,” said Wachter. A young man who worked on the show, and now works on the “Survivor” team, remembered the comment.

“I got a call and was asked, ‘Do you still have the long hair? Do you still go to the gym?

His answer was yes to all and after 11 months of background checks, Wachter was shipped out to the Fiji island, only to spend the first night in pouring rain as a tropical depression turned to a cyclone in the Pacific. For the first time ever, the contestants were evacuated. (Again, this isn’t Wachter first brush with a hurricane. He’s braced many in his home state of North Carolina, but none in the Keys since taking up residence 10 years ago.)

This season of “Survivor” pits Generation X-ers against Millennials. Wachter is the oldest cast member, born in 1963.

“We didn’t always get a trophy in our time,” he said during the introductions. “We know how to work hard.”

In the first episode, his blue team lost the first challenge and were sent to deliberation to see who was voted off. His name was never mentioned. “Survivor” airs on CBS on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. The teaser for next week included someone being seen by the medics for heart trouble; let’s

Artist Tyler Buckheim wows at Burning Man HAYS BLINCKMANN

ocal artist Tyler Buckheim has gained national attention with her sculpture at this year’s Burning Man installation. Each year the non-profit Burning Man Organization hosts 200-plus artists who create interactive 3D sculptures in a temporary city in Black Rock Desert, Nevada. Over 70,000 people attend the weeklong festival celebrating principles such as self-reliance, self-expression, community cooperation, civic responsibility, and leaving no trace. In other words, Burning Man is an incredibly advanced version of Woodstock with artists instead of rock bands.

The application process is lengthy — 18 to 30 pages for forms to fill out depending on your sculpture piece — but the nonprofit isn’t looking for experience or wordy resumes, just sculpture that would be pretty damn cool to look at in a desert far away from modern life. Buckheim’s first sculpture application was accepted in 2013, “Lighted Mandela,” when she

applied on a whim. This year, Buckheim spent more time composing her sculpture, “Horizon Lines,” and again was fortunate enough to have an honorarium; a grant footing the bill for her installation’s materials and tickets for her crew (which can range from $400 to $900). There are no more than 60 honorariums given each year.

“It was amazing, so many people knew about my sculpture beforehand,” said Buckheim referring to the Huffington Post’s article listing her sculpture one of 12 “must sees” at this year’s festival, a pretty high achievement for a 26-year-old native Key Wester. The sculpture itself is 25 4x4 wooden posts,

each 12 feet long. Once planted in the ground and spaced apart, the visible 9 feet was painted to match the existing horizon line of mountains over 10 miles away. It was an interactive optical allusion for the viewer to move around determining foreground, background - a moving painting without one point of view.

Buckheim spent two weeks working and living in the scorching desert. While the heat felt easier than the humidity of home, she developed a cough from the dust and the tips of her fingers peeled away.

But she shrugged off wearing ski goggles constantly, “You get used to it.” And when it was over, Buckheim left no trace and donated her wood sculpture to Habitat for Humanity for houses.

Buckheim credits her artists’ genes to parents, well known locals Dick Buckheim and Susan Bailey.

Q: How long did the store renovation take?

David Miller’s locks did double duty last week when he raised $632 for Samuel’s House and another local charity. His goal was to chop it off “live” — but only if he could raise $500. Julie Hanson for Hot Cuts came over to do the deed at Friday’s happy hour tips event at Bottle Cap Lounge’s Blue Room. He said it took him five years to grow it that long and is happy to donate the hair for a wig for a cancer patient. Miller spends most Fridays at Bottle Cap and even has a table reserved for the weekly events.

Cyclists undertake 100-mile ride to help MARC clients

How long have you been riding?

20 years.

What made you want to do the 100mile Tour De Keys? I wanted to set up a ride that would not only raise money for MARC House but would bring recognition throughout the entire Keys for what MARC House does for developmentally disabled adults. If the community does not know what we do, they can’t help. (Editor’s note: MARC client Michael Neary is riding the 100 miles on Jo’s team!)

Other notable rides/races? MS 150 in Jacksonville and here in South Florida.

Favorite race fuel? Bananas and NUUN.

lthough the Overseas Trail is largely complete, riding bicycles 100 miles from Key Largo to Key West still presents a challenge. But local riders like these are ready to take on the task to raise money for MARC House, a Keyswide organization which helps local adults who are developmentally challenged.

The second annual Tour De Keys happens on Saturday, Sept. 24.

“Cycling has become a really big sport in the Keys,” said Becki Balcer, Tour De Keys co-director out of Key West, who has completed The Smart Ride through the Keys, and other century rides. “Most of the riders this year are Keys residents.”

The event will be capped at 100 riders, and participants number 83 as of presstime. “You know how people are in the Keys, so it’s very possible we will max out this year,” Balcer said.

Mark Terrill of Islamorada Sports, who hosts 100-mile rides through the Keys frequently, is the other director of this weekend’s race.

Balcer said she’s excited to see a lot of first time riders this year. “It’s reaching a different rider and shows that we will be able to continue to grow the ride,” she said. “And, we couldn’t do it without the volunteers who man the eight water stations throughout the Keys.”

As for the riders, be on the lookout for them this Saturday, Sept. 24 from sunrise until 5 p.m. There are many places where the Overseas Trail ends and cyclists must ride on the shoulder of the bridges. The ride is expected to raise more $15,000 — registration fees plus sponsorships — this year for the MARC Clients. For more information on MARC House, visit marchouse.org.

When I came home, I was different. Once carefree, my persona had become far more serious and stern.

Apart from becoming really angry at even the slightest thing, I was unable to feel stress without it avalanching into anxiety. As my anxiety grew so did my unhealthy coping methods.

Most days, following work, I found myself drinking to feel better. I cut myself off from most of my friends and family. I was isolated, and the limited social interaction was taxing and felt awkward. I found it difficult speaking to anyone outside my military peers about my experiences.

I developed sleeping and anxiety issues.

I’ll never forget the first family Christmas party I attended and how ashamed I felt to have two family members approach me separately and ask if I was “okay;” especially because I was purposefully trying to mask how “not ok” I was.

But I had someone I could relate to, my cousin, Uriel Flores.

After graduating Nutley High School in New Jersey, he enlisted in the Navy, became a Corpsman (the Navy’s version of medics), and had a deployment to Iraq already under his belt. Uri kept “his” Marines safe and healthy, and had the type of grit you’d expect from a north New Jersey kid. I eventually found my way into the Navy Riverine Force, whose job it was to conduct maritime security operations on the rivers of Iraq and its surrounding coastal waterways.

Our jobs required extreme skills, physical readiness, and mental strength. We welcomed the challenge. We would both go on to proudly serve multiple tours, pushing our minds and bodies further than we had ever thought we could.

Our jobs paralleled each other in many ways, and we would sometimes call each other to laugh and compare our journeys. We talked about Iraq, coming home, and how different things were. Uri had always been a passionate person with a strong will and I took a lot of comfort knowing I wasn’t alone in readjusting. We talked about how difficult it was for even family to understand our experiences.

The years that followed would be harder than I imagined, and contact with Uri became less and less.

Struggling to find balance, I would seek counseling at the veteran’s resource center on campus and for three years, work on myself to find healthy ways to cope with stress. In the end, I graduated the University of Central Florida in 2015, healthy and prepared to continue on with my life.

For reasons that are still unknown, Uri decided to take his life on Sept. 6, 2016, and on Sept. 10, Suicide Prevention Day, my family buried our hero. Aside from sadness, anger, and regret, confusion has dominated my thoughts recently.

What would compel someone with a bright future to choose this route?

Uri was enrolled at Columbia University in New York. He was handsome and genuine and loved to laugh. I don’t know what he might have been feeling lately, or what circumstances in life had made him feel like he had no options. These questions linger and hurt immensely.

Perhaps a misconception of veteran suicide is that men and women come back from what they’ve done and feel ashamed. I don’t believe this is the case with Uri. He was proud of his service, and as a Corpsman, he spent his time healing and helping people rather than hurting anyone.

He traveled many places and made many friends.

What I do know, is that a strong support system of people who can empower and listen, and have the patience to confront your shortcomings, are the catalyst for improving quality of mind and life. A gesture that simple can make a world of difference to a person struggling to find worth and motivation.

The complex paradigm of veteran suicide will not be solved by a single initiative or by new a President. When the issue of veteran suicide isn’t relegated to political talking points, maybe 22 will be more than just a number.
