The rat race of life isn’t going to get any easier, so “shortcuts” are necessary to edge out circumstance and competition and, of course, not look like a fool. While encouraging locals not to incriminate themselves, the Weekly asked locals …

What is one thing you cheat at, and call it a shortcut?

Capt. Carsten Huppertz, lead captain at Florida Keys Dive Center, said, “ My diet and my lunch. Yesterday, I packed half a sandwich for today’s lunch. The sandwich never made it.”

reopens Key West shelter Middle Keys shelter closed for renovations

he Domestic Abuse Shelter, (DAS) has reopened its 21-bed emergency shelter in the Lower Keys since being temporarily suspended by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) back in May. It has also temporarily closed the Middle Keys 38-bed facility for renovations. The arrangements came after an agreement reached by DAS, the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence, (FCADV) and Victim Response.

“Our first priority continues to be for survivors of domestic violence and their children,” said Jennifer Powell, president of the board of the DAS. “These newly forged partnerships provide additional resources and critical life-saving services to anyone seeking safety from abuse throughout the Keys. We are working hard to retool.”

Since May, the Keys shelter has been operated by The Lodge, a MiamiDade based agency, one of 42 statecertified domestic abuse shelters. The Lodge took over operations in order to provide Keys victims of abuse a safe haven.

“When the Middle Keys shelter closed for renovations, our existing clients had the option to go to Key West or resettle at either another mainland shelter or find a private situation,” said Powell. “We do not have a target date to re-open the Marathon shelter.”

Powell said she is not privy to the financial arrangements between the

FCADV, a state agency that distributes funds to shelters statewide, and The Lodge in return for operating the Key West shelter. She added The Lodge will continue to pay the rent, as per lease agreement, on the Middle Keys facility until it reopens.

The Key West shelter facility is owned by the city housing authority.

The DAS recently undertook some routine maintenance and deep cleaning of the facility. DAS is awaiting some final contractor quotes before beginning renovations on the Key West shelter, including installing a handicap ramp and an ADA-compliant bathroom.

“We are awaiting a few pieces of information on the quote before we commit to that work, which will be paid for by a private donation,” Powell said, adding the housing authority has already agreed to the scope of the work.

In May, when the DAS’ license was suspended, the DCF noted it was taking the “least restrictive” option available and gave the DAS six months — until early November — to take corrective action. The DCF report also said, “it must also demonstrate the willingness and capability to change its management and operations …”

Joseph Pinder Jr. Joseph Bertram Pinder Jr., 86, an Islamorada founding family member, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 7, 2016. He was born in Key West on March 9, 1930 to Joseph B. Pinder Sr. and Ida Cothron Pinder.

His great grandparents homesteaded in Key West and moved to Indian Key in 1870 where Joseph’s grandfather, Preston Pinder, was born in 1875. The family moved to Upper Matecumbe circa 1877. Pinder survived two of the most devastating hurricanes to hit Islamorada; the Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 at only five years old and Hurricane Donna in 1960. His strong work ethic developed at 10 years old when he began working at A&B Fish House. He would also manage lobster traps and work in construction. On Feb. 7, 1953, he married Roberta “Bobby” Jacoby. Together they settled in Matecumbe and raised three sons.

Pinder worked as constable before serving six years as the only Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy patrolling the Upper Keys. After his law enforcement career, he worked with his father at Pinder & Son appliance store before becoming the supervisor of maintenance at Cheeca Lodge. Joseph went on to open Pinder’s Refrigeration, where he offered local installation and repair services. Pinder was originally appointed to the Board of Monroe County Mosquito Control by Florida Governor Reubin Askew in 1977, where he would serve 17 years including time as chairman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorie Brothers and grandson Jamie Pinder. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Roberta “Bobby,” sister Alma Pinder Dolton, sons Jack (Teresa), Joseph “Buddy” (Cerise), and Henry (Barbara), grandchildren Alisha Aviles (Chris), Andrea Barth (Ben), Brandon and Carrlee Pinder, Jake and Hank Pinder, and great grandchildren Tyler Pinder, Mason and Ethan Aviles, and Brody and Brantley Barth.

81 Years Later …

T

he Village of Islamorada once again united to remember the lives of those lost to the infamous 1935 Labor Day Hurricane. The Matecumbe Historical Trust hosted the memorial service on Aug. 5. The ceremony honored the more than 400 lives lost during the storm.

Boy Scout troop 914 and Honor guard Paul Mosczynski began the ceremony by parading and raising the colors. Mayor Deb Gillis gave a speech honoring the civilian and World War I veterans who perished. As tradition, a wreath was laid atop the memorial, which was donated by Centennial Bank. The ceremony included “Amazing Grace,” and Alexis Duran performing “America the Beautiful,” and the “National Anthem.” At the end, all in attendance, including eight survivors of the storm, bowed their heads in silence, as Pastor Tony Hammond offered kind words and condolences.

ine members of Key Players are currently meeting twice a week to rehearse its upcoming farce, “Move over Mrs. Markham.” It’s a comedy, produced

by Samuel French and written in 1969 by authors Ray Cooney and John Chapman and locally directed by Brad Shenk. Jonelle Kop is leading the group, which has met only a handful of times to rehearse at the Key Largo Lion’s Club.

The Key Players is opening Nov. 11 at the Key Largo Lion’s Club. It will run for two consecutive weeks.

The whole play revolves around a bed. “Move Over Mrs. Markham” is set in an elegant top floor London flat, belonging to Philip and his wife, Joanna. The flat has been under renovation, and has been largely empty.

Both Philip and Joanne agree to loan their apartment out for the evening, unbeknownst to each other. Coincidently, the interior designer has decided to take advantage of the open space as well. When all parties arrive at the rendezvous, chaos ensues.

The Key Players formed in 1978 and has since performed hundreds of productions.

Keys Players is looking for more actors and volunteers.

According to director Brad Shank, there are usually 26 hands “behind” the actors, creating a strong demand for backstage help. To volunteer as a stage hand, call 305-942-4339.

The group is also holding auditions for six actors/singers for an upcoming February production, “Midlife! The Crisis Musical.” Auditions will be on Friday., Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Key Largo Lion’s Club in Key Largo.

The musical will be performed in early February.

Champion of the underdog ohn Donnelly is as tough as nails. The Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, has had his fair share of turbulent times which ultimately, led to triumph. After returning home from the war wounded, Donnelly was homeless for four years in New York City. “In the winter I slept in the subway, in the summer I slept on the rooftops,” said Donnelly. The will to keep going is a trait common amongst Marines, and Donnelly is no exception.

Donnelly soon got back on track, and began working with the Juvenile Justice System at a maximum-security facility for criminally insane adolescents. It was here, that his passion for helping kids began to grow. He advocates for juvenile justice and eventually moved to Key Largo. Years later, he spearheaded a successful movement to free an innocent man who was scheduled to be executed.

How would you say the criminal justice system needs to reform?

Reform needs to come in the form of not prosecuting innocent citizens. Also, in making certain that criminal investigations are conducted in a fair, transparent and ethical manner.

What is the hardest obstacle facing veterans transitioning to civilian life?

Combat veterans have a hard path to follow. It takes time. I believe the VA has a better handle on assisting veterans in the re-entry process now, as opposed to when the Vietnam vets returned home.

What are some school reforms you could see as beneficial?

I've been pushing for a "How To Live Curriculum,” a course that teaches and practices meditation, energization exercises and consciousness expanding techniques. I've submitted a scholarship proposal to the Monroe County School District, but haven’t gained much traction.

How do you compare the Vietnam vets with Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom vets?

I feel a strong kinship with veterans serving in all operations. I respect their sacrifice and service and, for the most part, I know what they've gone through.

Name one thing you enjoy most about teaching college students.

I brought my "A" game into the classroom. Just as the Marines in my squad depended on me; the young minds depended on me to educate them.

Is there a strategy in helping the less fortunate?

You have to have inner drive and determination to help people. People respond in kind to your sincerity, graciousness and kindness. It's contagious.

How have you been a role model for your students?

I've developed a positive attitude towards myself, I'm not ashamed of my imperfections. I've learned to use them to measure how far I've grown.

On Nov. 10, 2015, the Marine Corps’ 240 birthday, Donnelly was awarded the Distinguished Citizen Medal by the Commandant of the Marine Corps. It recognizes his lifetime of service to country and community.

Which is the last book you read?

“The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho.

What is your pet peeve?

I kind of give everybody a wide berth.

Not too much gets under my skin.

What is your favorite memory of teaching?

The present. Living in a small community, I regularly meet with my students and I'm happy they take the time to talk with me and tell me about their lives and families.

Which is your favorite movie?

“Full Metal Jacket.”

What decade of music had the best?

Motown.

What television show do you remember growing up?

“Sky King.”

If you could bring back one historical figure for lunch, who would it be?

Jesus Christ.

In his first year of being a firefighter and paramedic, MIKE HAMPSON is excited about his new job. He said he has always wanted to help people.

“My dream is to protect the community I grew up in,” said Hampson. After undergoing the necessary training, he volunteered at the Islamorada fire house until a position opened up. He credits his father, Tim Hampson, for influencing him to put others first, and put 110 percent effort into all aspects of life. His proudest American moment was when the American flag was raised at Ground Zero.

CARLOS MORETON didn’t become a firefighter until he 39-years-old. “I’m a late bloomer,” said Moreton. After serving in the United States Navy, Moreton worked as a sales manager until realizing he wanted to be part of the small percentage of the population that does extraordinary things to help people. “I wanted my kids to be proud of me,” said Moreton. He says his proudest American moment comes every day, doing something he set out to accomplish, and knowing he sets a good example for his family.

CAPTAIN ROBERT YOUNG has been serving the community he grew up in for more than 10 years. Right out of Coral Shores High School, Young went on to earn his certifications. He then spent a year at the Key West Fire Department, until returning to the Village. He credits his family and friends for steering him in the right direction.

“Some older gentlemen I knew were in the fire service and I thought they were pretty cool.” said Young. His favorite aspect of his job is the versatility. “We have to adjust to different situations.”

CAPTAIN GARRIDO has been serving Florida as a firefighter and paramedic for more than 10 years. Originally, Garrido began volunteering in Palm Beach County, but eventually joined the Key Largo Fire Department. Garrido says his inspiration for joining stems back to when his grandfather went into cardiac arrest. Just out of high school, and already trained in CPR, Garrido helped his grandfather to the floor and began chest compressions. After EMS arrived and stabilized him, one of the EMS told young Garrido that he ultimately saved his grandfather’s life. His proudest American moment was having his twin boys.

“Everything I do, at this point, is for them. I want to set the example.”

Originally from Venezuela, LT. PEDRO MARIN has been a firefighter and paramedic for more than 11 years.

Marin came to the United States to study medicine, but after three years of medical school, circumstances led him to another career path. Years later, a friend mentioned that there was a Fire Department in Key Largo that could use his experience. “I like the challenge of diagnosing trauma and medical emergencies on the spot.

After studying medicine, I wanted to continue working in the field, and this was a great way to help people,” Marin said. There are many misconceptions about being a firefighter, though Marin concedes that he has, in fact, had a “cat in a tree” call.

• The Key West Firehouse Museum, in cooperation with the Key West Fire Department, has invited the public and all first responders to attend the 15th Anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy at 8 a.m. with the ceremony beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the museum on Grinnell Street.

• The Kirk of the Keys Church in Marathon, in cooperation with the City of Marathon, will be holding a tribute service at 10 a.m. The public and all first responders are invited, and lunch will be served afterwards. perfecting rosé until Americans woke up and realized they were missing out.

Here’s what is great about rosé — it’s actually dry (NOT syrupy sweet), it goes with everything (meaning its flavor is light and neutral, not “oaky” or “buttery”), and it’s cheap. Yep, no sommeliers needed. Just chill, drink and repeat. And rosé’s are meant to be drunk — they aren’t investments for your kids’ college fund, no aging or de-corking or sniffing or spitting; just drinking.

“I would say rosé was being written about, produced domestically, imported and consumed in culinary hotspots like Miami, New York and San Francisco for the past five years,” said Stephanie Southgate, fine wine consultant for Noble Wine Estates, a division of Breakthru Beverage. “I did see a distinct increase in the popularity of rosé in the Keys about two years ago. Certainly the most popular profile seems to be the dry and zesty style from the South of France.”

Here’s rosé 101: Rosé is made by the maceration method, where grape skin is left to sit and stain the wine for a few hours or the Saignée (“San-yay”) method when some red wine juice is bled off and put into a new vat to make rosé. Red and white wines can be blended but that is uncommon, and not encouraged. The primary flavors of rosé wine are various red fruits, flowers, and citrus.

“There’s been a renewed popularity in rosés,” said Karen Trujillo, a sales rep for Southern Wine & Spirits for the past 15 years. “A year ago, it wasn’t easy to sell. Now all the restaurants are asking for them because their customers — men and women — are asking for them.”

Trujillo said her favorites are Le Caprice de Clementine (served at Alma at Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key, and Oltremare at Amara Cay Resort in Islamorada) and Mionetto’s Prosecco Brut Rose, a sparkling rosé (served at Florida Keys Country Club in Marathon, and Bumby’s and The Islander Resort, both in Islamorada).

Marathon Liquors recently added new French rosés to the inventory: Chateau La Gordonne (Cotes de Provence), Billete Provance, Pink Flamingo, and Listel Grain de Gris.

• Dress for the weather. In the middle of winter, it’s easy to spot the tourists. On a cool January day, the locals will be wearing sweaters and slacks while the tourists will be in T-shirts and shorts. Even though it feels cool to us, fur is really never acceptable when standing next to a palm tree. Save your cold winter attire such as fur for the truly cold weather up north — like when you’re visiting Tallahassee.

• Avoid socks. I remember when we first moved to the Keys, the weather got cool and I knew I’d become a local because I threatened to put on socks. Unless you are planning to go for a run, there really isn’t any need for socks in the Keys. The Keys are all about comfort and the one who can get their toes in the sand quickest always wins.

• Wear sunscreen. Tourists always have the most amazing tans … said no one ever. When friends visit us from the North we are constantly reminding them to apply sunscreen.

They seem to think that in January, when the weather is cooler that they

won’t get a sunburn. As locals, its important to wear sunscreen every day unless you want to make weekly trips to the dermatologist.

• Capture the moment. You used to be able to spot a tourist a mile away by the bulky camera hung around their neck. Today’s tourists are a bit more techie and can instead be found huddled around their selfie sticks. We locals know it’s important to capture the important moments in life, but we leave our selfie sticks at home. Instead, we ask our local bartender friend or acquaintance at a neighboring table to take the picture.

• The fanny pack. The 1980s popularized this awful contraption as a way to keep valuables safe and tourists have been donning them ever since. I realize the fanny pack could be considered convenient with its hands-free wearability, and easily accessible zipper pockets. But even if you are chasing after your kids at the park, opt for a crossbody bag or backpack to keep your items secure.

• Slow drivers. I always know when it’s a holiday weekend in the Keys because of the horrendous traffic. It’s especially bad the closer you get to bridge. The cars slow, the cameras come out and everyone seems to forget that they should be focused on the road. We locals know that the best place to take in the view and the salty air is at our favorite watering hole with a drink in hand – not while driving on the Overseas Highway.

If you’re a tourist reading this and I just described you, no hard feelings. We get you. After all, most of us came to the Keys on vacation and never left.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you?

I’m involved in the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta National Math Club, Key Club, the International Thespian Society and our Drama Club. I’d have to say Drama Club is by far the most significant to me. Theater really just is my escape from the real world.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why?

Either Mrs. Rehmann or Mrs. Coopersmith, who’ve taught me AP Chemistry and AP Biology, respectively. They are both such strong women who have persevered against all odd with hardships and are still phenomenal teachers through it all and I love them both.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why?

I think my participation in drama prepared me for life better than any class has because it is a team effort towards accomplishing an extraordinary good, rather than singular, personal effort in class.

Drama has taught me how to be flexible, how to be a team player, how to rely on others other than just myself. That’s important Instagram or Snapchat?

What’s your favorite filter?

Definitely Snapchat, but I don’t really use filters. I just use snapchat to message people. The stickers are fun, though.

What are your plans after high school?

I’m hoping to go to a college at either Georgetown University, Reed College, or Swarthmore College, where I will be majoring in biology with a concentration in zoology or wildlife biology depending on what’s available. After that, I’m going to save the animals were annihilating with our ignorance.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home?

Why or why not?

Definitely not. It’s way too hot and way too humid all year round.

There are no real trees and no seasons and the Keys basically has no soul. I’m not a water baby so there’s not really anything for me here.

Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me… … people are really good at messing up natural systems, and I want to help fix them and protect what’s left of the Everglades and our reefs.

evon Spaulding and a microphone go hand-in-hand. His ability to sing is one of his best attributes and his on-stage persona undoubtedly strikes a chord with audiences.

Spaulding, 29, has been lead vocals of the high-energy rock band, Colbert the Band, for the last seven years. Growing up playing guitar, he’s always been musically talented, but it’s when he began to sing that his career began to take off.

Spaulding started singing while in college at Florida State University, in a reggae rock band, Boxa Phillies. The band played gigs for a year in Tallahassee along the popular college strip and in a few in Jacksonville.

“I started singing a few radio commercial jingles. That was the first time I actually got paid for singing,” said Spaulding, and he’s been honing his craft since.

It was at FSU when he met drummer J.P. Farr and the two still play gigs together Thursday nights at Sharkey’s Pub and Galley as the threepiece band, Mr. Stix, with B.J. Toohey on guitar.

Spaulding said he has a number of influences: Brandon Boyd from Incubus, Robert Plant, Stone Temple Pilots, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Foo Fighters. Colbert the Band is a top-40 rock hit demo band. They play weddings, at bars, corporate events and private parties. Spaulding’s favorite songs to sing are high-octane hits including: “The Ocean” by Led Zeppelin, and “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns ‘n’ Roses.

“Colbert is definitely the locals’ favorite and Devon [Spaulding] gets the crowd going. He’s the crowd favorite, he’s well known,” said Kristen Peterson, a bartender at the Big Chill.

As for stage presence, Spaulding delivers. He’s never suffered stage fright or shied away from the spotlight. Spaulding said he’d like to play more big stage events — “they fuel me” — and the band’s biggest show to date was the 6,000-person crowd at the Palmetto Bay Fourth of July concert last year.

The five-piece band has three members at its core: Justin Truscello on bass, Andrew Johnston on guitar and Spaulding. It plays the Big Chill, Sharkey’s Pub and Galley, and Bayside Grille, among other venues.

When Spaulding is not playing at gigs, he’s at home with his wife and two daughters or at his day job installing and programming home automation systems, making homes “smart.”

Next weekend, the Upper Keys will play host to two popular water contests — a ‘marathon’ swim for a historic lighthouse, and a two-day paddle extravaganza where racers can test themselves in three categories.

SWIM: Alligator Reef Light The fourth annual Swim for Alligator Lighthouse is set for Saturday, Sept. 17. The event is part of a three-day weekend invitation for swimmers to explore Islamorada. The non-profit group Friends of the Islamorada Pool sponsors the challenging open-water swim started by local artist “Lighthouse Larry” Herlth. Net proceeds of the swim then provide scholarships for high school students. The swim also raises awareness of preserving our treasured historic lighthouses.

“Thanks to our underwriters, they’ve made it possible to have the proceeds benefit high school students, but some of the money raised will also go towards acquiring zinc anodes for the light house,” said sponsor coordinator Betsy Keteltas. “The anodes are ‘sacrificial’ devices that slow saltwater corrosion of the metal lighthouse.”

Swimmers may compete individually, as teams of two or teams of four. Throughout the nine-mile race, swimmers are accompanied by support craft.

Look for the large buoys stretching from The Moorings to the lighthouse, as those designate the swim course.

Swimmers will begin at a designated in-water starting point just off Moorings beach located behind Moorings Village and Spa at 123 Beach Road in Islamorada and finish in the same spot no more than seven hours later, followed by an awards ceremony.

PADDLE: Triple Crown On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18, the fifth annual Florida Keys Triple Crown returns to the shores of Islamorada. The Triple Crown is comprised of three events: the Flying Mile solo paddle, BoardX Challenge (which tests paddlers’ maneuvering ability), and the 10-mile “around the world” course. The competition kicks off with the first of the three rounds at 11 a.m. on Sept. 17 at Paddle 88!

“It’s an opportunity to get together and celebrate our paddling skills and fellowship with each other,” said Scott Baste, owner of Paddle! the Florida Keys.

The Flying Mile is a mass paddle that starts at 11 a.m. The 2 p.m. race — BoardX Challenge — begins at 2 p.m. (In that race, all the participants use the same make of board to even the playing field.) Paddlers have the rest of the day to recreate before Sunday’s “Around the World” challenge. It’s a 10-mile course that traverses both Toilet Seat cut and Cow Pens cut. It starts at 10 a.m. Soon after the experienced paddlers have set out, a shorter 2.5-mile race begins for novice competitors.

‘Leisure Seeker’ scouting locations in Marathon, Key West

Movie to star Mirren, Sutherland Weekly Staff report

A

fter hosting auditions in Key West on Sept. 1, and posting Facebook appeals for extras, production scouts are reportedly scouring in the Middle Keys and Key West for locations for the filming of “The Leisure Seeker” starring Donald Sutherland and Helen

Mirren.

“A lady came through and said she was looking for locations,” said Mark Matthis, a Marathon business owner.

The casting is being handled by Ellen Jacoby Casting, the same company that also worked on “True Lies,” which famously features the Seven Mile Bridge. She said the filming will be in Key West on Sept. 13-14 (including The Hemingway House) and in Lower and Middle Keys on Sept. 15-16.

The movie is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Michael Zadoorian. It features the madcap adventure of an elderly couple who “kidnap themselves” for a final adventure — a road trip in a recreational vehicle. In the book, the female lead has cancer and quit treatments; the male lead has Alzheimer’s Disease.

Mirren and Southerland will be reuniting after sharing the screen in 1990 in the movie, “Bethune: The Making of a Hero.”

The movie is being produced by European companies The Indiana Production, BAC Films and Rai Cinema. The production plan always called for the Keys locales, but the movie was recently rained out by Hurricane Hermine in Georgia.

"Although the Marathon locations may be attributed to Key West in the movie for storyline purposes, it’s still good publicity for Marathon and the Keys overall,” said Daniel Samess, chief executive officer of the Marathon Chamber of Commerce. “There is some economic benefit, whether its taxes or visual recognition. And it’s a positive-comedic movie which I’m happy to have associated with the Keys."
