INSIDE
The third annual Bubbas Awards, Key West people’s choice event, draws 300 dignitaries, friends and supporters at the Key West Theater for a night of celebration and laughs. One of the highlights included a game of ‘political’ charades, pairing political opposites on teams and reminding us why Key West is truly One Human Family. Seen here: U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, left, candidate Trish Gibson, Monroe County Mayor Heather Carruthers, candidate Kevin Madock, candidate Robert Lockwood, and candidate Ron Saunders. KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Keys Weekly

KEY WEST WEEKLY / JULY 22, 2016 HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
Hurricane season is here and anytime until November we could be faced with the winds blowing over the Keys. But the same goes for married folk, anytime the phone could ring, plane tickets could be bought and the in-laws could be on their way. So we asked locals…
Which would you rather live through: a small hurricane or the in-laws coming for a visit?
Thank you Key West & Lower Keys! JJ Noah would choose a small hurricane. Definitely. “But shhhh, don’t let my husband read this.”
Joe Lytton, assistant manager at Small Dog Electronics, understands the true nature of a blow. “A small hurricane means a party. I could live through that.”
Laura Williford, of Key West Aquarium, said, “A small hurricane is fun. I like my inlaws, I really do, but hurricanes are perfect for doing nothing and having party.”
For voting us #1 LUNCH in the 2016 Key West People’s Choice Awards! (Thanks, too for voting Square Grouper as runner up for Best Seafood and Best Key Lime Pie!) We are Delighted and Very Grateful for Your Support! Lunch 11:00 – 2:30 Dinner 5:00 -10:00 Closed Sun & Mon until January

“I’d take a large hurricane,” said Mike Gibson of the Shipwreck Museum. He answered rather quickly.
Runners Up for Best Beer Selection & Best Margarita! Thank you! Come check out our New Menu!
Compass Realty’s Michael Behmke said, “A small hurricane is a vacation.”

BUBBA BLAST
Annual awards evening
Weekly Staff report
T
he third annual Bubbas, Key West people’s choice awards, took place this past weekend at the Key West Theater. Nearly 300 dignitaries, supporters and winners were in attendance to share a night of laughs while celebrating some of the best businesses, people and places in the Southernmost City — all while supporting Samuel’s House. The event raised more than $10,000 for Samuel’s House. The agency provides housing and supportive services for homeless women and intact families. This year’s event was presented by the Key West Weekly Newspaper and Florida Keys Media, with generous support from three title sponsors: First State Bank, Waste Management and the law firm of Horan, Wallace & Higgins. In addition, silent auction items included original art from Rick Worth and Wyland, dinner at Tavern ‘N’ Town, lodging at Cheeca Lodge along with other donations to cap an incredible evening. Food was provided by Two Friends Patio and Square Grouper, while the Key West Theater crew and staff provided professional bar and stage services to what has become one of Key West’s premier events. “The Bubbas have certainly taken on a persona beyond anything we imagined three years ago,” said Key West Weekly’s Britt Myers. “Rick Lopez and his team at Florida Keys Media added an incredible element of talent this year and I am always overwhelmed by the community involvement and support. At this point, we simply buckle up and enjoy the ride. In 2016, we were proud to support Samuel’s House with every dollar raised at the event.”
Key West Weekly Newspaper Publisher Britt Myers, left, and Managing Partner Jason Koler emcee the event every year.

BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE: Strunk Ace Hardware “Our staff works hard, but having great customers makes it a pleasure to give good service.” — Andy Strunk, Stunk Ace Hardware, Winner of Best Customer Service Bubba
BEST FISH SANDWICH, BEST PIZZA, BEST SEAFOOD, BEST BUSINESS, BEST FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS: Hogfish Bar & Grill & Roostica Someone get these two a truck to haul their awards away. The Mongelli’s rake in a ton of Bubbas for Hogfish Bar and Grill, and even some for Roostica.
BEST VENUE: Key West Theater The Key West Theater is the new hot ticket in town in the name of music, plays and movies, but also voted Best Performing Arts Venue. Keep up the good work, and thanks for letting The Bubbas use the space for the evening allowing even more dollars to be donated to Samuel’s House. Key West Theater’s Mike Marrero and Kelly Norman show off their plaque.
BEST HAPPY HOUR: Tavern ‘N’ Town
BEST DENTIST: Claude Harris
BEST BREAKFAST: Blue Heaven
Up against some very toothy competition in the dentist competition (think Troxel and Guzman), Dr. Claude Harris got to show off his pearly whites at last week’s Bubba Awards while accepting the Best Dentist Bubba.
When thinking about breakfast in Key West, the first place that comes to mind is Blue Heaven. Blue Heaven is synonymous with breakfast. It’s no wonder they brought home first in this category.
There’s a reason why Key Wester Michelle Maxwell wished for a reserved seat at Tavern ‘N’ Town at Beachside Marriot in her Christmas list to Santa – and it’s because it is without a doubt one of the best happy hours on the island. All entrées are $19.95 if ordered before 7 p.m. (yum, filet mignon, local seafood) and two-for-one drinks (even the expensive ones) during happy hour. Locals know it’s where to find their friends because everyone hangs out there.

Andrei shows off Amarone Della Valpolcella at New York Pasta Garden.
New York Pasta Garden
P
assing through New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and visiting Key West on a cold winter season from Chicago, New York Pasta Garden bartender Andrei said he moved down after meeting the love of his life. He’s been at the restaurant for the past two and a half years. “We get to be our own bosses here,” he said. “We don’t have to worry about anyone else not holding up their end.” His fiancé, who is a chef, said this is her favorite wine. Andrei said he doesn’t drink wine often, but when he does it’s Amarone Della Valpolcella. He added this red goes best with shrimp and scallop scampi topped with fresh parmesan cheese. The wine is full bodied, balanced, and silky with aromas of cherry and notes of chocolate and spice; the perfect accompaniment to the rich, savory dishes at the pasta garden. “You can just sip on it and enjoy the evening,” he said. “It’s really amazing.” When he isn’t bartending, Andrei enjoys spending time with his new baby and heading to the Ramrod swimming hole or exploring Bahia Honda and Ft. Zach. The New York Pasta Garden is located at 1075 Duval St., Key West. It’s open seven days, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

ivers Alert Network (DAN) will offer a series of presentations addressing lobster mini-season and risks associated with this two-day event. The series will start one week prior to this year’s mini season throughout the Keys and South Florida. Dr. Peter Buzzacott, director of Injury Monitoring and Prevention at DAN, and staff have developed a presentation that includes a review of accidents, identifies common hazards and tips for how to avoid them. Buzzacott, a native of Western Australia, said the opening of that lobster season bears many similarities to the Keys. “We have the same issues with recreational divers the first few days of season. It’s madness as people go after their limit,” he said. The seminars will offer practical information, Buzzacott said. “I have tips to reduce the cardiac work load while diving. or 20 years, Jon “Tosh” McIntosh has called Key West his playground. Always with a sense of humor and a battalion of creative ideas, McIntosh has given back to our community a plethora of artistic achievements. A graduate of Hobart College and Rhode Island School of Design, he spent most of his career illustrating books and logos (Legal Seafood) in Boston, until he had enough of New England winters and made Key West permanent home. Now, McIntosh’s artwork and designs can be spotted regularly. Locals recognize McIntosh’s work all over town — from his pointed political cartoons, three Fantasy Fest posters, and logos for popular businesses such as Key West Film Society, Michaels Restaurant and Flying Monkeys/ Fogarty’s, and his charity work with Ann McGee, AIDS Help, VNA, Womankind and Wesley House. He was a 2014 South Florida Consortium Grant winner for his artwork which varies from marine paintings to sculpture to contemporary art. Next McIntosh will embark on his next venture as co-owner of the 30-year-old gallery, Lucky Street, to be re-opened this fall.

M
ARC recently hosted the 20th annual Don Moore Memorial MARC House Grunt Tournament at Hurricane Hole Marina. The event is named after MARC’s late founder, who began the tournament in the ’90s as a way to thank MARC supporters and friends. Today, Moore’s wife, Diana Flenard-Moore and current MARC executive director, continues to carry the torch for one of Monroe County’s most vital organizations. The fishing tournament boasts more than 18 boats and “provides MARC clients an opportunity to see their world from the water and to have fun fishing.” The awards ceremony, which included accolades for prettiest fish, largest edible catch and the Joe Greene Snapper Trophy, took place at the end of the event. Hurricane Hole cooked the catch and every participant received an award from Sloppy Joe’s and a certificate from the Key West Fishing Tournament Association. More than a dozen fishing captains and other volunteers donated their time to keep the event 100 percent cost-free, and many of the captains return year after year. Contributed

ey West City Commissioners typically make the news from the dais, but Commissioner Sam Kaufman recently took a break from politics to celebrate his birthday — and the Key West Weekly had the privilege to join the fun. Sam’s wife, Julia, organized the event at UVA Wine, which has become one of Key West’s premier locations for exceptional wines. Although it was not disclosed which birthday Sam was celebrating, the local attorney indicated that age is much like the wines at UVA — they only get better with time. — Weekly Staff report BRITT MYERS/Keys Weekly 1. Ron and Mary Teschendorf Demes joined the birthday boy, Sam Kaufman, to discuss some politics and wine; but mainly wine. 2. Sean Farrer and Kevin Kenny were among the VIP guests at Commissioner Sam Kaufman’s birthday bash. 3. Beauty comes in threes! The lovely Nicole Kenny, Alicia Farrer and Stephanie Kaple brought a red carpet vibe to the soiree at UVA.

Bubbas on Parade The Bubbas, an annual people’s choice awards celebration for Key West, brings out the best and brightest of the Southernmost City. All together, more than 80 awards were handed out.
5 SARA MATTHIS & KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Keys Weekly 1. Ron Saunders, left, and Kevin Madok — both candidates for the upcoming Clerk of the Court election — partnered for charades. Madok was tasked with acting out one of the toughest clues — Zika virus.
6
2. Robert Lockwood points with emphasis at Tricia Gibson. Both candidates for public defender, the two played on the same team although Lockwood was clearly the most skilled charades player on stage. (People will be talking about ‘Michael Jackson’ for quite some time.) 3. Food donated by Square Grouper and My Two Friends dominated the length of the Key West Theater. Two Friends won the Bubba award for Best Bloody Mary, while Square Grouper won for Best Lunch.
4. U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo mimes for Monroe County Mayor Heather Carruthers during charades. Curbelo nailed “Trump,” and Carruthers was all-in for her “Conch Salad.” 5. Paul Ritli, left, hangs with his friend Brandon Pinder and his fiancée Kelly. Pinder is a candidate for Mosquito Control in District 3, Key West. 6. The Weekly Newspapers partnered with Florida Keys Media for the annual Bubba awards. On-air talent and behind-the-scenes VIPs showed up in force. Back row from left: Bill Bravo, Chuck Thomas, Steve Miller, Rudey Tyler, Bill Hoebee, Leigha Fox, Tiny, Courtney Cruise, Rachel Mathewson, and Erika Perkins; front row from left Carolyn Guarini and Rick Lopez. The Lost Kitchen Supper Club starts sizzling HAYS BLINCKMANN

ld friends, Bobby Mongelli, restauranteur, and Martin Liz, personal chef, are teaming up to create a new culinary adventure in Key West unlike any other called the Lost Kitchen Supper Club. The club’s motto is as intriguing as the prospects, “Let your culinary curiosity lead you.” The idea is the club will be fueled by a membership of foodies who want something a little different and out-of-the-ordinary whether it comes to food, venue, chef, or theme with their dining experience. Mongelli and Martin have procured a place in the Safe Harbor Marina as the clubhouse; a renovated warehouse space reminiscent of Hemingway days. Filled and built with found objects from around Key West, the two-story space was constructed by Safe Harbor owner Joe O’Connell with wood from old shrimp boats, Jimmy Wray originals, vintage art work, a blackjack and pool table, and a large Hawaiian teak bar. Mongelli and Chef Liz have equipped it with both an indoor and outdoor kitchen — making it a usable venue for either the supper club or private events. But the Supper Club won’t be limited to one space or one chef. Mongelli studied supper

clubs around the world and said, “A lot of chefs don’t have a chance to showcase their talent if they are limited by place or menu.” He promises every event will be different — food, chef, location. “For example, we could take people out to Snipes Key for an authentic ‘Backcountry Shrimp Boil,’ the kind of meal that can’t be done in a restaurant,” said Chef Liz. Chef Liz, a native Conch who first worked for Mongelli as a sous chef, has been cooking since he was 15 years old. His specialty is blending native Cuban and Caribbean with Asian and French influences. He enjoys creating Key West Conch cuisine fueled by the “Ocean to Table” movement. Also, Chef Liz incorporates indigenous plants, herbs and fruits into his cooking to make it truly native. “This is the natural evolution of dining in Key West,” said Mongelli. It is bound to be delicious. For more information, visit www.LostKitchenKeyWest.com.
KWHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK
KEY WEST WEEKLY / JULY 22, 2016
TALIA SANTIAGO
SENIOR
Faculty and students at Key West High School chose a Weekly Student by selecting candidates with good character, achievements and involvement. These students standout amongst their peers and are recognized by the Weekly Newspapers. What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? KWHS Conchettes, National Honor Society, Executive Board, Choir (Mistys), Conch Student Athletic Leadership Team, Peer Mentoring, and Yearbook. Conchs Care is my own non-profit organization that raises money for the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. These are all important to me because I have been taught that it is our responsibility to give back to our school and our community through leadership, community service, and giving. We are a small town, and it is up to us to support each other in any way that we can. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? Amber Russell, a special needs student at KWHS and our Conchette manager. She is an amazing person who inspires me to be a better person and to enjoy the small things in life. Every day she is excited and ready for Conchette practice, and she is truly the glue that holds our Conchette family together. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Mrs. Betty Ford’s Advanced Placement Language class has helped me come out of my shell to write to the best of my abilities and gain confidence in my public speaking, all important qualities for a career in law. Mrs. Ford has influenced me in helping to determine my college major and career I would like to pursue in life. What is your favorite social media and why? Who do you follow? Facebook is my favorite social media because it connects everyone to everything. It brings back old friendships and allows current ones to thrive. My favorite Facebook accounts to follow are the KWHS Conchette page, the KWHS Athletics page, and especially Mrs. Michelle Anderson’s page because she takes such great pictures at KWHS events. These accounts allows for all parents and students to keep up to date on important activities. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? Key West and the Florida Keys are facing serious issues when it comes to our coral reefs and our endangered species. It is our job to protect these aspects of our local environment. Without these living treasures, there would be no tourism. No tourism means no Key West. What are your plans after high school? It has always been my dream to attend University of Florida and to study law.

HAYS BLINCKMANN is an oil painter, author of the novel “In The Salt,” lover of all things German including husband, children and Bundesliga. She spends her free time developing a font for sarcasm, testing foreign wines and failing miserably at home cooking.
ummer in the Keys is synonymous with two things: heat and vacation. Ninetynine percent of residents will do just about anything to get “off the rock,” even if it means visiting the in-laws or flying 10 hours with a toddler, anything. But no matter where we go, inevitably we will all go to the same place, the mall. Malls are everywhere — except here because we are “mall” snobs and live in paradise. But admit it, we secretly binge on them the moment we are off the island. If only to serve the purpose to remind ourselves once again, we hate malls and we choose to live in a place with out malls. I grew up on a 70-acre farm in North Carolina. I don’t actually remember shopping for clothes until my teen years. Consumerism wasn’t on my family’s Top 10 activities; it just never took hold as a sport even though we were a household of women. I read and watched TV a lot, I wore my older sister’s hand-me-downs, and if I proclaimed I was bored my mother shot back, “Then you are boring.” The latest jelly shoe trend or neon stirrup pant was never as important as watching “Used Cars” or “Caddy Shack,” again. Fast forward to adulthood, I have accepted the mall is not my natural habitat. While everything is so spectacularly shiny, new, mmm pretty, 10 minutes into the adventure my eyes dilate, the fluorescent lights begin to burn and I feel like I need a horsegrade Xanax. It’s too much. Inevitably, I just hit a Mini Gap for the kids and call it a day, too overwhelmed. I see people dripping with shopping bags like Christmas ornaments and think, I don’t need any of this crap, get me outta here — or at least to the nearest Cheesecake Factory for a martini. I have found a lot of us have this affliction, convincing ourselves a trip to the mall is a good idea. Well, we know better now don’t we? Wait to get home to your Amazon Prime and enjoy your vacation, or at least a martini (or three) before you go back to the in-laws.
Our Volunteers: The Keys Weekly Staff (Lynn, Kristen, Javier, Sara, Ben, Anneke, Lesley, Travis and Hollie), Rick Lopez and his team at Florida Keys Media and the incredible ladies of Samuel’s House. hills. That’s what will shiver up and down your spine while watching “Water By The Spoonful” at Red Barn Theater. The Pulitzer Prize winning play puts the dark side of addiction front and center with good puns along the way, but also with thought provoking commentary of how addiction affects families – blood and adopted.
“This is a really tech heavy show,” said Theater XP Founder and “Water by the Spoonful” Director Bob Bowersox. “We saw it in Philly a couple years ago because a friend was in it, and we were just blown away by how powerful it is. We knew we had to bring it to Key West.” Some of the play takes place in chatroom forums for crack addicts, and the simple stage comes to life with the lighting and characters. The cast is brilliant and their dramatic execution is perfect. Cousins Luis Febo, as Elliot, and Melody Moore, as Yazmin, charm the cast while dealing with yet another death in their Puerto Rican family. Meanwhile, Elliot, an injured in the Iraq war, deals with his inner demons, played by the talented Tony Konrath. Paula Cabot, chatroom name Haikumom, dazzles as a recovering crack addict and truly brings the audience into her struggle of staying clean. Karl Stahl, Tammy Shanley, and Bob Bowersox capture the audience with their back and forth chatroom banter. “The way the writer intertwines the two webs is brilliant,” said Bowersox. “You’ll see why it won a Pulitzer.” Lighting Designer John Jaworski honors the actors — “It is such a good, really cool cast.” But his lighting design is just as notable. Bowersox said it best: this is a rare masterpiece that shouldn’t be missed. The play runs Wednesdays through Sundays through July 31 with an 8 p.m. curtain time. For tickets, call 302-540-6102 or visit keywestsummerstage.com.
“If you’re eating a s#!t sandwich, chances are you ordered it. — Karl ‘Chutes and Ladders’ Stahl in ‘Water By The Spoonful.’
In a move mirroring New York City’s free Public Theatre offerings in Central Park, Key West’s TheatreXP will be offering free performances of their powerhouse Summer Stage production of the Pulitzer Prize winning “Water By The Spoonful”, opening Wednesday for a two-week run. Seats may be reserved for specific performances by calling XP at 302-540-6102. Reservations are required, as all seats are reserved as assigned seating. “I recently read the biography of Joe Papp,” said Bob Bowersox, founder and producing artistic director of TheatreXP. “He was the Broadway producer who started the whole Off-Broadway genre with his Public Theatre, and who insisted that theatre should be free to anyone who wanted to see it. I was impressed by his story and what he accomplished, and thought, I wish we could do that.” As luck would have it, Bowersox and XP had just received a very generous gift from a supporter who put no limits on what they could do with the funds. The lightbulb went off in Bowersox’s head. “Combined with our sponsorship funds and grants, the gift more than allows us to do this,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to make Summer Stage a special theatrical event for Key West. It just occurred to me, what better way to do that than to follow in Joe Papp’s footsteps and offer it for free to anyone who wants to come? And it’s one hell of a play – you don’t win the Pulitzer for lousy writing. The more I thought about doing this, the more excited I got.” Bowersox said he’s researching the idea of making Summer Stage a free festival going forward.
