The 2016 summer is an awesome time for sports, whatever your fancy. Wimbledon, Tour De France, MLB, Olympics and this month soccer mania with Copa America and Euro Cup. Head to any bar in the Keys and, guaranteed, a game will be on. With Euro Cup starting Friday, June 10, the Keys have no lack of residents from the participating European countries. Neighbors and friends will face off as their country of origin battles it out for 90 minutes on the green fields of France. So we asked some of the experts to put it in writing …

Who will win Euro Cup 2016?

“Ireland will get out of the group stage,” said Annette Foley, a native of Ireland. “Switzerland will surprise everybody — but just definitely not Germany or Spain, I don’t want them to win.”

Shanna Key Pub owner Barry Geary said, “When there’s nothing expected of England, they go far. But watch Ireland and Belgium — they can do it.”

Less waiting where it matters most – our emergency room.

Nancy Rouse, with a little German heritage, said, “Germany, World Champions, what more can you say?”

In a medical emergency, every minute matters. So, at Lower Keys Medical Center, you’ll find faster care in the emergency room. We work diligently to have you initially seen by a medical professional* in 30 minutes – or less. And, with a Rich Fox, native of England, has his picks. “I would love England to win, but you know that’s not gonna happen. Iceland will surprise everybody and Belgium will take it.”

team of dedicated medical specialists, we can provide a lot more care, if you need it.

The 30-Minutes-Or-Less E.R. Service Pledge – only at Lower Keys Medical Center.

“Ziggy” Burnatowski Zbigniew, native of Poland, is a realist. “Robert Lewandowski (lead Bayern Munich Striker) is good, but Poland as a team, not so much. I don’t like it but I think France will win.”

Between the Navy and a seawall City ponders future of Truman Annex Harbor

I

By Britt Myers

t was difficult to determine whether it was Key West City Commissioner Richard Payne or revolutionary activist Thomas Paine at Old City Hall this past Tuesday evening. The former Key West judge passionately lambasted the Navy over rights to the Truman Annex Harbor — even receiving outward cheers of support from the audience throughout his fervent plea. “Thank God for George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and John Adams and others who had the sense to give us a Bill of Rights,” said Commissioner Payne from the dais. “And the Fifth Amendment, of which shrined the principle that private property cannot be taken by our government without first making payment of just compensation to the owner of that property. After all, we are not a communist or third world country where property can be taken without recourse.” Since being elected to the commission last year, Payne has called for the Navy to grant the City access and usage of the Truman Annex harbor — citing a long-standing agreement that he claims is being neglected by an abuse of power. In recent months, Payne reached out to several Monroe County legislators, including U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo, asking them to intervene on behalf of the City’s interest.

Although the City is still awaiting a response from the Navy, the issue was ushered back into the spotlight at Tuesday’s City Commission meeting when an agenda item asked commissioners to approve a $150,000 grant. The grant funds, plus another $50,000 of in-kind dollars, would be the City’s contribution for repairs on over 300 feet of dilapidated seawall around the Truman Annex harbor. Commissioners Payne, Samuel Kaufman, and Billy Wardlow all expressed reservations. Payne argued the wall was solely the responsibility of the Navy — at least until a new agreement could be reached. Kaufman cautioned that approving the grant could hinder current negotiations between the City and the Navy. “Fellow Commissioners, there is absolutely no benefit to the citizens of Key West to refurbish this [seawall],” said Commissioner Payne. “And as far as the City of Key West being a partner with the Navy and NOAA, what kind of partner gives you property and then shuts you off from going to and using it so they can have exclusive use of the harbor?” City Manager Jim Scholl characterized the item as basic “house keeping” and cautioned commissioners that failing to repair the wall could lead to greater costs should the damages become significantly worse during hurricane season. The opportunity to accept the grant expires at the end of this month. Commissioner Jimmy Weekley offered the compromise: postpone the item until the Navy formally responds to the overlying issue, which are the City’s supposed rights to harbor access. Dissenting on the postponement were Commissioners Billy Wardlow, Kaufman and Payne. Scholl said the Navy has indicated they will respond to the matter by Friday, June 17.

‘WINNING CHANGED MY LIFE’ Third annual Bubbas awards are back! By Britt Myers

A

fter months of speculation, the Key West People’s Choice Awards, officially coined the Bubbas, are finally back. And on July 16, the people of Key West will know which restaurant serves the best fish sandwich, who has the best customer service and which elected official is a town favorite. In fact, more than 50 categories will allow locals to vote on all of the incredible-ness that is Key West. And the best part, it will benefit Samuel’s House — with the generous support of First State Bank, Horan Wallace & Higgins and Waste Management. Fill out the ballot on page 31 and follow the directions for submission. Your vote can change a life! BASCOM GROOMS 2015 Bubbas – Won Best Realtor for a second consecutive year. Bubba Ancestry: 11th generation Conch. His ancestors are responsible for driving out the indigenous population from Key West in 1691, while introducing many of the simple luxuries the island still enjoys today (such as rum, cigars and dengue fever).

How did the Bubbas change your life? After last year’s win I decided to take a spiritual journey for perspective and enlightenment. A lot of people recommended places like Mt. Kailash and Machu Picchu, but I ultimately decided on Dollywood. BOBBY MONGELLI: 2015 Bubbas: Mongelli holds the record for most Bubba nominations. In 2015 he won Best Fish Sandwich, Best Lunch and Best Pizza. Bubba Ancestry: Great grandnephew of General Bocephus Belvedere Cartwright, who served in the confederate army but deserted to Key West and changed his name to Mongelli, establishing Key West’s first Italian eatery at Union-controlled Ft. Jefferson. How did the Bubbas change your life? Although I live outside of the city, I finally received lifetime resident parking passes for myself and the entire family. I also get a free piece of key lime pie at Kermit’s, rubberstamped building permits, a seat next to Mayor Cates in the Fantasy Fest parade, Coast Guard emergency escorts in the event of a hurricane and a free fade at Conch Cuts. Not to mention I don’t have to wait in lines at the DMV, the Whitehead post office and IHOP. LANDON BRADBARY: 2015 Bubbas: Won Best Bartender Bubba Ancestry: Although most are fully aware that Landon is in the witness protection program (he constantly blabs about it at The Porch), it is widely assumed that he is the illegitimate son of Bum Farto. How did the Bubbas change your life? I actually ordered a Nile crocodile off the Internet with my winnings. I named him Spanky, but my girlfriend forced me get rid of him. He was way too big to flush down the toilet so I let him go free in the Everglades.

Secrets Revealed Annual mystery writers festival this weekend

T

Contributed he third annual Mystery Writers Key West Fest launches Friday, June 10, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Grand Key Resort on S. Roosevelt Blvd. The “Murder & Mayhem in Paradise” themed weekend of total mystery immersion — open to published authors, aspiring authors and non-writing book lovers alike — features New York Times bestselling author and renowned trial lawyer Robert K. Tanenbaum as keynote speaker. The festival combines workshops presented not only by a laundry list of talented authors, but also a local law enforcement. The latter will talk about procedure and the strange criminal element in the Keys. Participants also have a chance to socialize at dinners and poolside gatherings. Mystery Writers Key West Fest is produced by Shirrel Rhoades, a publisher who has held executive positions with Reader’s Digest, Scholastic, Harper’s, Marvel Entertainment and other wellknown publishing companies, and Florida Keys-based author Michael Haskins, creator of the popular Mad Mick Murphy mystery series. "It’s not just writers and fans of

mystery fiction and true-crime that come to our Fest," said Rhoades. "In our first two years we quickly discovered that, because of the caliber and accessibility of our guest authors, the fascinating panels and unique social events, our ranks were being infiltrated by enthusiasts of many genres. After all, how many writers festivals are there in which leading, world-class authors are hanging out, having fun and rubbing elbows with the audience members every day?" The cost is $175 for full access to three days of panels, presentations and social events, plus four meals. “It’s practically criminal,” says Rhoades. t’s a common saying among musicians that you can “never have too many guitars.” Well, when you live on an island and space is limited, this may not always be the case. For New York native Daryl Brooke, the struggle was real. Having moved to Key West with his family in 2012, Daryl soon realized he was going to have to get creative if he was going to hold on to all his equipment. So what did he do? He opened his very own music store, The Grateful Guitar. Daryl Brooke was born in NYC and grew up in Long Island. He began his musical career playing the trumpet in the school band, but soon found a higher interest in the guitar. Upon hearing Duane Eddy’s “Rebel Rouser,” Brooke took to the guitar at age 10 and hasn’t set it down since. And when he witnessed Jerry Garcia play the pedal steel in 1970, Brooke began exploring the instrument himself and found a new passion for which he continues to study daily. Taking lessons from the likes of Neil Flanz, steel player for Graham Parsons/ Emmylou Harris on the Fallen Angels tour and currently from John Ely, steel player for the band Asleep at the Wheel, Brooke is constantly learning, not only the steel but all facets of music and music production. Daryl is also a very busy man. From running the Grateful Guitar,

As a production leader of the Sunday Ramble series, Brooke along with Nick Norman, James Whitehead, Jeff Clark and Derik Reay have successfully launched what has become an incredibly popular and acclaimed concert series at the Key West Theater, something that is a first here on the island, of which he is very proud. “It’s Key West musicians supporting other Key West musicians to perform music they wrote in a world-class venue. The preparation, rehearsals, and contributions from everyone involved all make for a unique show,” Daryl said. “We are thankful for all the local and visiting fans that make the Ramble so special.” Daryl is also a member of the Ramble Band, playing the steel pedal on each show thus far. Brooke has also become very active in the daily music scene, performing alongside Norman, Whitehead and a host of others in and around town.

‘DANCE AROUND’ Laney Jones and The Spirits play Key West

A

By Hays Blinckmann

t 24 years old, Laney Jones has already been dubbed by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the “Top Ten Country Artists You Need to know” in 2016 and it’s obvious why. Listening to her sing echoes greats such as Emmy Lou Harris, Lucinda Williams, and Patti Griffin. Her voice is vintage, soothing, piercing and distinct. Her songs are soulful and melodic, capturing your heartstrings with her ability to play the banjo, ukulele, guitar and harmonica. Singing since she was 10, it didn’t dawn on her to make it a career until she picked up a banjo one day in college. “It felt instantly right,” said Jones. Jones has been on the musical fast track. Just three years ago, she started recording while studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since then she has worked with songwriting great Kara DioGuardi, sang with country superstar Allison Krauss, performed her hit, “Broken Hearts” at Lincoln center in New York and won the prestigious John Lennon Songwrit-

ing Contest. Her songs range from potential pop hits, Indie staples to country classics. Jones recognizes it’s hard to stay in just one genre. “The difficulty I find is being attracted to a lot of different types of music such as jazz, old-school country, Latin grooves, ’70’s rock, hip-hop, and a plethora of other sub-genres. It’s hard to pinpoint the essence of why I like what I like. All of it influences me and I just try to write good songs.” Her Indie hit, “Run Wild” is an anthem worthy of any movie-esque moment, and earlier hits like “Broken Hearts” take you to her country roots. Her latest hit, “Allston (Dance Around)” is a catchy cross blend of pop genres that leave you wanting more. “If my music can move someone

enough for them to want to tell me about it, I know I’m doing something right.” Jones said. “Key West appreciates legitimate artists who are honing a solid craft. At the same time, we're a town that wants to have a good time and leave a concert humming. This show accomplishes both,” said Erin Stover-Sickmen, artistic director of The Studios of Key West, who was excited to nab Laney on her Florida tour. Hailing from Mount Dora, Jones is coming back to her Florida roots to play at the The Studios of Key West on Friday, June 17, at 8 p.m. Backing her up is the “The Spirits” — Matthew Tonner, Tre Hester, and Brian Dowd on electric guitar, bass and drums.

Joe and Michelle call the annual Kentucky Derby party at Half Shell Raw Bar a ‘local’s appreciation day.’

or a brief moment in the spring of 2000, Michelle and Joe’s eyes met in the office of Half Shell Raw Bar. The next day Joe was training Michelle behind the bar at the popular restaurant, and they worked really well together. “I knew there was something good in our future,” Joe said. For almost five years, they kept their relationship under wraps, but it all worked out — they’ve been married since 2005. “Now pretty much everyone knows we’re married, but occasionally a seasonal guest we’ve known for years or a new employee will pull one of us aside and say, ‘I didn’t know you two were married,’” he said. It’s pure old school. Bill Schult and Kris Roehrig are taking skateboards out of the factory and putting them back into the hands of craftsmen. These two woodworkers-inventors are combining their passion for wood and skateboarding with their new business Bone Island Originals, or Bio. The unique, one-of-a-kind skateboards are sold only in Key West. Schult and Roehrig use native wood harvested and milled in the Keys such as Cuban mahogany, tamarind, maple and woman’s tongue. Instead of layering the deck with only plywood, they use one layer of plywood, a fiberglass cloth, and then a patterned combination of native wood. Lastly, a marine grade epoxy coats the board, creating a sturdier deck. The construc-

CHANCE PARKER originally hails from Texas, and is currently the wine director at Prime Steakhouse in Key West. He has more than 15 years experience in fine dining and catering, and is a certified sommelier, as well as certified specialist of wine.

here is a new player in the breakfast game in Key West, and it brings a variety of unique offerings that you probably have never seen before. For that reason, I strongly suggest all coffee and breakfast enthusiasts get to Keys Coffee Co. immediately. You will of course find some standard fare, like Goldman’s Bagels, with a wide variety of toppings, including house-cured Salmon — as fresh as it is flavorful. Likewise to be found are fresh blueberry muffins, coconut macaroons, and banana nut bread. A variety of delicious smoothies await, as well as innovative breakfast and lunch sandwiches, and you can wash it all down with one of the many fresh-squeezed juices including carrot and celery and apple. But it truly is the coffee selection that steals the show. Keys Coffee has a full espresso bar; that’s to be expected. Of course you can enjoy a latte or mocha with your warm croissant. Keys Coffee also has all your favorite Cuban coffee options. (After all, we are in Key West; bucci and cafe con leche runs in our veins.) But the options continue to go on and on: Turkish coffee, French press, iced coffees in either house or hazelnut flavors, with frozen coffee ice cubes, of course. Then things start to get interesting. How about a frozen coffee, blended with ice cream, for a cold treat on a hot day? Or a coldbrewed coffee, with less acidity for a milder flavor, and an increased caffeine kick? The piece-de-resistance, however, is the cold-brewed Nitro Coffee, short for nitrogen. This otherworldly delight is infused with tiny nitrogen bubbles over its two-day brewing process; it’s where supremely mellow coffee meets Guinness. Owner, Gino, originally hails from Belarus, and is a coffee master. While living in New Jersey, he decided to move to the Southernmost City and do what he does best: make amazing coffee, and serve a small, but eclectic, menu of quality items. He is doing a brilliant job. When you stop in, try the Oslo Sandwich on a toasted Everything Bagel, with scallion cream cheese, and the aforementioned two-day, house-cured salmon. Another delicious option is the Capri Breakfast Sandwich, with egg and fresh mozzarella on a flaky croissant. No matter what you select, Keys Coffee Co. will have just the pick-me-up you need.

JULIEN OHAYON SENIOR What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School and why are they important to you? I am involved in Interact Club, Wakeboard Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, Executive Board, and Reef Relief. Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why? Mr. Whaley inspires me because he taught me way more than calculus. He cares for his students and teaches life lessons along with AP Calculus. What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Mr. Smith’s T.V. Production class because no matter how good the program is, there is still a lot of pressure students need to learn to overcome. Also, we are put in front of a community with people we don’t know. What is your favorite social media and why? Who do you follow? My favorite social media is Facebook because there are always such funny videos on there. I follow a lot of people I know in town. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenge is the “Bubba System.” This system affects many adults and children only because they haven’t been here for a long time. Non-bubbas have less of an opportunity to stand out. To meet it, try going to games, events, and things in the community. What are your plans after high school? I would like to attend UC Berkeley and become a computer programmer. Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? In the future, yes, but I think I would like to take a break for a while after high school. What are your plans for the summer? To read and study and hopefully create an app for the App Store by summer’s end.

K

ey West Rotary Club prides itself as being a volunteer club raising money for everything under the sun, but the annual casino night is the one time when most of the members can just sit back with a glass of wine and shoot some dice and play some cards. “We work our butts off all year,” said Casino Night organizer and co-chair Jessica Cranney, who will be found with a stack of chips in front of her at the black jack tables this weekend. “This is a stress free event.” Last year’s Mardi Gras themed event raised $17,000 for Rotary scholarships. This year, the money raised will be going toward Take Stock in Children Monroe County scholarships. Cranney, who has been a Take Stock mentor for the past three years, is a big supporter of the nonprofit. “All funds are matched by the state dollar for dollar,” said Take Stock Program Coordinator Chuck Licis. “So everything this raises will be doubled for scholarships for Monroe County students. We are very appreciative of Rotary for doing this.” Professional level casino games like black jack, roulette, Texas Hold Em, and slot machines will be available for guests 18 years and older. The games are for entertainment only and all donations go to Rotary Club of Key West.

The Second Annual Rotary Casino Night “Denim and Diamonds” will be held on Saturday, June 11 starting at 7 p.m. at Key West Marriott Beachside. Pre-purchased tickets are $75 (call 305-7734016) or pay $100 at the door. This will also be the last evening to purchase a ticket to win a 2016 Nissan Altima or $10,000 cash. Limited tickets are available for $100 each.

Howard Livingston’s fans (called “Castaways) will come from across the nation to Key West for a week of fun and fundraising. (In 2015, proceeds helped the KOA Care Camp for kids with cancer.) Some of the top “Trop Rock” performers in the country will be playing at such venues as Hogfish, Smokin’ Tuna, Schooner Wharf Bar and Kelly’s Caribbean. For more details, visit www. meetmeinthekeys.org.

Fringe Theater Key West will present its final production of the season, the hilarious and offbeat “Hate Mail,” next week. It tells the story of a love-torn duo whose fast-paced and sardonic story is at the heart (so to speak) of the show. Pianist Michael Robinson provides the musical backdrop. The show will be performed at the Little Room Jazz Club in Key West.

Key West Art & Historical Society presents “Pencil Me In: The Sketches of Mario Sanchez” at the Custom House Museum on Front Street in Key West. The exhibit lauds the celebrated Cuban-American folk artist’s sketches done on brown paper bags, a process Sanchez used to guide the layout of his famed bas-relief woodcarvings. More than 70 sketches will be on display through December.

Reef Perkins, will debut his latest book, “Deep Air” at Grand Vin, 1107 Duval St. A blow-up sex doll, gems and beer are all catalysts for an outlandish misadventure rolled out in the author’s signature style. The author draws inspiration from his own diverse life adventures. “I took a true story from my salvage days and with the help of a fruitful imagination concocted this Keys tale,” he said.

SEA GRASS DIEOFF SPARKS GRASS ROOTS MOVEMENT

Florida Bay Forever begins organized advocacy campaign

U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo, left, Capt. Elizabeth Jolin, Capt. Xavier Figueredo and Islamorada Councilman Mike Forster discuss solutions for the backcountry’s health.

JASON KOLER/Keys Weekly

arge swaths of skinny waters between Islamorada and the Everglades are no longer the stuff of TDC photo essays. The chocolately brown water is closer to the hue of Lake Erie and the faint sulfuric scent is clear evidence of the massive seagrass die off in the Florida Bay that has resulted in localized fish kills, extensive loss of marine life habitat and led to ideal conditions for a massive algae bloom. “The trigger has already been pulled and it will happen,” says Capt. Xavier Figueredo. “We are probably looking at the worst algae blooms that this bay has ever seen because the grass die off this time around is about 40 percent larger than last time.” Figueredo is a founding member of the new 501c4 Florida Bay Forever formed to “call on policymakers to take immediate action toward Everglades restoration.” He joins Islamorada Councilman Mike Forster, Daniel Burkhart, Capt. Steve Friedman, Mark Gregg, Mindy Conn, Figueredo, Capt. Gary Nichols and Capt. Elizabeth Jolin — the group’s executive director and Figuerdo’s wife. The seagrass die off has already affected at least 40,000 acres and as it continues to spread across the Bay, the group is concerned about spider web of adverse affects across the fragile Florida Keys eco-system. “It intersects other bodies of water,” Jolin warns. “The reality is that this is critical to the coral reef. We talk about it as if it is a closed system, but it’s not.” In a report released by the South Florida Natural Resources Center (SFNRC), last summer’s drought “resulted in an acute, catastrophic loss of seagrass.” The findings also allude to the biological and economic impacts of the die-off, reporting “Florida Bay provides the nursery area for a multibillion dollar fishery and tourism-centered economy. When Florida Bay is unhealthy, the impacts are felt across South Florida.” U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo and State Representative Holly Raschein recently toured the affected area with Florida Bay Forever agents. Rashcein told the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce that more help is needed at the federal level.

“Florida Bay is a critically important ecosystem in addition to being a vital component of our local economy. That is why it is crucial that we continue to pursue strategies to send more clean water to Florida Bay,” Raschein said. “We should consider all available options to not only increase water quality but to complete projects like the Tamiami Trail that will help send more water south." Curbelo has said that the state needs to purchase acreage south of Lake Okeechobee to build reservoirs of fresh water. Call Captain Elizabeth Jolin at 305393-0994 or email fbfvr@gmail.com for more information. Watch for website www.floridabayforever.org and membership opportunity in the coming months. Puppy Prosthetics Pet orthotics give local ‘good boy’ mobility GABRIEL SANCHEZ

ike most puppies, Moon has an insatiable curiosity about the outside. His favorite hobby in particular is chasing lizards. The fivemonth-old beagle mix gets along with all the other dogs at the dog park, too. “He loves dogs, people, and life in general,” said Diana Bassett, a first grade teacher at Key Largo School and Moon’s foster mom. But Moon is a little different. He has no paws on either of his hind legs. “When he came to us, his paws were bloody nubs,” said Kat Spiegel, rescue coordinator at Marvelous Pet Rescue in the Upper Keys. “We had to clean up his wounds and focus on keeping his legs from developing infections.” The cause of Moon’s physical condition is unknown to this point — Kat said it could have been a birth defect or an injury. After he was rescued, staff had to ask themselves some hard questions about Moon’s quality of life. Three professionals recommended euthanasia as an alternative to a painful life of immobility. But Kat and Diana kept looking for answers while encouraging Moon in his “therapy” to keep him strong. Then they found veterinarian Marta Sanchez of the Animal Health and Rehab Center in Miami. She has 11 years of experience in this specialized work of fitting animals with prosthetics. “He had very strong stumps and the length was adequate enough to make him a good candidate for orthotics,” said Sanchez. “When he came to me, he was two months old. We had to wait on X-rays to confirm he had no protruding bones or fragments. The concern was pain he may have felt when putting weight on the orthotic.” There was a sense of urgency for his new appendage to work. “If he rejected the orthotic, we would have been left with minimal options. The day he put on his slippers he started walking around within moments. There were a lot of tears and excitement,” said Diana. With the slippers working, Moon is “He had very strong now able to run and swim. For now, he stumps and the wears his “Rambo slippers” three times length was adequate a day for two hours until he’s acclimated to the prosthetics. They are the first set Moon will have as he grows to maturity. —Marta Sanchez “He’ll probably have one more set of orthotics until he is grown enough

to be fitted for his permanent prosthesis,” said Kat of Marvelous Pet Rescue. Being a special needs dog will require attentive care from an owner. Prospective families need consider medical expenses, have adequate time to care for Moon, and be willing to guide him through physical therapy. “My goal is find him a forever home that’s ready to take on whatever comes with him. He’s fought his way to this point and he deserves a chance,” added Kat. For now Moon seems content to accompany his siblings Virginia and Bailey on daily walks, slippers and all. Serious applicants can apply online at www.marrvelouspetrescues.org or stop by and inquire at Marvelous Pet Rescue at 99900 Overseas Highway in Key Largo, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
