By Hays Blinckmann It's TAX TIME and those who are dutiful and patriotic will fill out the confusing forms, sign multiple lines and hand over the moolah to Uncle Sam. U.S. citizens are familiar with the same old taxes, penalties and percentages but just what if, for fun, we could make up our own? So we asked locals…

If you could invent a tax, what would it be?

“A water bottle tax that goes to filtered water stations so you can refill it — or better yet, buy a freakin’ canteen already!!” said Alma Alemendariz.

Ricki Cavow, artist, said, “Let’s face it - SOME people just shouldn’t walk around naked!” He would impose the tax on drooping, flabby folks whose public display of nudity serves no purpose other than to horrify locals and scare small children. “The more offensive, the higher the tax.”

Martha Fitch, Crossong guard, said “A tax on those who speed through a school zone!”

Chris Needham, of WeCycle, proposes a “stupid” tax. “It’s for when people act stupid by walking in crosswalks when the signal is green for cars, biking the wrong way on a street and asking how many sunsets there are.”

Dr. Timothy Mackey, owner of Truman Medical said, “I was thinking there should be a tax (or at least a fee) for continuously and unintentionally getting photo and video bombed by people from around the world. I mean, I bet there is at least one Key West local who is, at this very moment, being viewed in a Danish family’s vacation selfies. We should at least get royalties.”

Musician rounds up his talented buddies for concert

I

t never fails. It can be the Key West Seafood Festival, a local bar or the stage at the Key West Theater. When Nick Norman picks up a guitar and begins to sing, people stop what they are doing and become hypnotically engaged.

It’s hard to pinpoint just one attribute on why Norman, who cut his roots performing at a Baptist church back in his native South Carolina, is so compelling as a live performer. After all, he has all the attributes of someone on the verge of legitimate stardom. He is a prolific writer, a

consummate worker and has a distinct voice saturated in fervid soulfulness.

But ask anyone who knows Nick Norman, and the first thing one will point to is his patented smile. Norman, who

has performed everywhere from The Fillmore in Detroit to bars all over Key West, is rarely seen without his trademark — whether it be in person or on stage.

When asked about his affable grin, Nick is quick to reveal the source of his genuine exhilaration. He is a man living out a dream. Not only has he carved out a successful career in music with multifarious blends of Southern soul, bluegrass and rock — he has been able to do so alongside his friends, a band of brothers to some extent, that he grew up with in Columbia, SC. “There is nothing more important,” said Norman, referring to the musical pact. “I want to play music with my friends. It’s why I started doing it and it’s what made me who I am.”

This Sunday, April 10, Nick Norman will take the stage at the Key West Theater, where locals will clamor to hear his unique hits, such as “Adeline” and “Good Whiskey & Cheap Cocaine.” But Sunday night will

be far from one of Norman’s typical shows, as his pals Joal Rush, Lewis Brice, Finnegan Bell (made up of Shane Williams and Warren Bazemore), and Chris Weaver will join him on stage.

Each artist, who either share their South Carolina roots or Nashville ties with Norman, are all widely accomplished artists — an improbable feat for a group of best friends with similar aspirations. The pack has scored appearances on CMT, label deals and performances alongside some of the biggest names in show business. But it is Nick’s journey alongside them, not the accolades, that promise to a make Sunday’s show an unforgettable experience.

“You can expect a hell of a show,” said Norman. “It will be like sitting in our living room as we tell our stories from over the years, with a collection of our songs.”

OBITUARY

The Colorful Commish in pain no more Tom Oosterhoudt passed away on April 1

A

year and a half ago, I sat in Tom Oosterhoudt’s home office, surrounded by 200 framed pictures of him and celebrities gracing the walls — super models, political powerhouses, actors, singers, television hosts. (If you were famous and you came to Key West, Tom had a picture of you and him hanging on his wall.)

On this particular day, we sat there on a Tuesday night, Conch Color deadline night, before he went to Tampa the next day for his fourth surgery. His editorial read like an obituary, explaining once again his surgeries, and thanking all he loved. I wouldn’t let him print it in the paper, because he was a fighter, his pain meds were strong, and I knew he was coming back. The obit, I slid in my back pocket, and promised that if he didn’t come back, I would put it in Conch Color for him.

Luckily, after 12 hours of surgery and weeks of recovery in Tampa, he was back at his Casa Antigua home. I visited a few times a week to tell him about all the people wishing him well around town. Never once was he without a hat on his head, or his hair perfectly in place.

He would joke about how cute his doctor was, or how bad Christopher Walken was in “Peter Pan Live.” When he was feeling well enough, I would bring my girls and they’d sit at the bottom of Uncle Tom’s bed and tell him stories of being my sidekick. He’d known Summer, my eight-year-old, since she was in diapers in a play pen in his office.

He was in a lot of pain, but

Tom was a true Key West champion of the arts, having the first symphony performance in Key West in his garage years ago — the same garage where he hosted his open-invite holiday party for years. The Colorful Commish embodied acceptance in the community, making sure the party was inclusive of everyone. He received awards and thanks from almost every non-profit in town for covering their events.

My favorite memory of him was how he loved to tell people he had the biggest rod in Key West — his spine supported by a titanium pole. He’d always receive a giggle over that, and he will always be remembered as making Key West a lot more colorful. His service will be held Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s. The cathedral will be picture-perfectly packed with all the lives he’s touched.

member of Sunday’s troop, along with Lewis Brice’s brother, Lee, who has become a household name in Country Music.

“Lewis was like my little brother and Lee [Brice] and I were leading music together at a summer camp,” said Norman on his days growing up in South Carolina “Music was just something we always did. I just never thought we would still be doing it today. It’s a special group.”

And while Norman always had his sights set on a career in music, he whimsically reflects on an array of side jobs he worked to stay afloat as a young man, including stints at a pawnshop, an income tax service and Chick-Fil-A. “As far as my music career, it really started in high school when I traveled as a guitar tech with Warren and Shane,” said Norman. “I got to travel with their band called ‘Silers Bald’ at the time and it was one of my biggest influences.”

But it wasn’t until 2005, after Norman visited Key West to hear Joal Rush at Hog’s Breath, that the local favorite made the move to the Southernmost City. Soon after, Joal and Lewis began to call Key West their second home and the group quickly became some of the most notable musicians on the island.

Today, Nick Norman is known throughout Key West and beyond. But when the devoted husband and father is not spending time with his wife (Kelly) and their daughter (TK), he continues to diligently perfect his craft.

my time with them. But having a child makes you realize the important things. My old songs tell a story — and now I write songs to tell my new story. It’s the perfect life for me.”

In humble fashion, Norman finds himself at the reins of a musical renaissance in Key West and Sunday’s show will certainly evoke emotions and artistry between a group of pals that typically do not need additional motivation. But for Nick Norman, a man who cut his teeth in the bowels of a Baptist Church,

it will be a spiritual experience between friends.

“For me, there’s just something about performances in a theater that transcend coliseums,” said Norman referring to Sunday’s show at the Key West Theater. “To put on an intimate show is the hardest thing to do.

You have to be real and pure — and a theater presents the best opportunity for that to happen.”

Shastina Chiles’ talent belies her age

H

ow many 16-year-old, high school seniors can say they just opened for Deanna Carter at the Key West Theater? Raise your hand Shastina Chiles — you are in a league of your own. Bermuda-born and California-raised, Shastina Chiles moved to Key West eight years ago and has been wowing the local music scene with her powerful voice, intelligent song-writing and impressive guitar playing ever since.

Singing since she could speak, Shastina began playing the guitar in the fifth grade. She soon began to combine the two talents and started performing around town, becoming the youngest musician to play

the Margaritaville stage here in Key West. Shastina recently began writing original music and showcased a handful of them as the opening act for the legendary Deanna Carter on Nov. 15, 2015 at the Key West Theater. She not only got things warmed up for the popular singer-songwriter, but she absolutely shined and brought the sold-out crowd to their feet.

Shastina returned to the Key West theater last month as part of the Sunday Ramble “Women Who Rock” show along side Claire Finley, Robyn Whitehead, Leah Orlikowski, Adrienne Z and Karri Daley.

“The Ramble was a wonderful experience for me, an incredible event with amazing, generous and people,” she said.

“They work so hard to promote

and work with other’s and the only expectation is putting on a great show in return. It’s a reoccurring event with familiar faces, bringing people together and introducing many different sounds. One Human Family!”

Shastina has recorded a few of her songs at the Ramble Room Studios to prepare for the Sunday Ramble and hopes to return with some new material moving forward. As she prepares to finish high school, Shastina is looking forward to possibly attending college and studying music production and recording while continuing to write and perform.

Fronted by female/male impersonator, Gina Maseratti — "Key West's High Heeled Pink Piano Playin' Queen" — this multi-talented band can cover an array of genres including, but not limited to, jazz, swing, rock, pop, blues, reggae, ska, N'awlin's funk R&B, country, rockabilly, ballads and more. Originally from New Jersey, Maseratti also has an affection for the standards made famous by another blue eyed boy from "Joisey," Frank Sinatra.

Gina is currently working in the studio on her soon to be released, "Gina Does Frank" which includes standards made famous by Ol'e Blue Eyes, Nat King Cole, and Tony Bennett.

The Pink Tones lineup is currently staffed by drummer John Saussen, who can be seen at many venues with some of Key West's top musicians, guitarist/singer Tony Napoli, whose smooth guitar work is known by many in the Middle Keys, and trumpeter/vocalist/rhythmist Hannah Kompier, whose sultry horn lines and strong vocals round out the 'Tones.

Laughs are never absent at a Pink Tones show, as Gina performs parodies such as "Devil went down to Key West," "All my ex's have changed sexes," "State of transition" and originals such as "Look Like your Mama, Sing Like your Papa."

Don't expect another lip-syncing drag queen! Gina plays keyboards, upright bass, guitar, and flute, and she may appear as anything from Lady Gaga, Sonny and Cher, Nat/Natalie Cole, Frank or Nancy Sinatra, sometimes changing from one to another while singing "My Way." Maseratti and the Pink Tones plays the Gas Monkey Grill on Sundays starting at 4:30 p.m.

Annissa has been at Boondocks since she moved from Massachusetts three years ago.

“I love our customers here,” she said. “They are always happy to be outside in the sunshine, or enjoying their lunch break.

I’ve worked all over the United States, and this is the best job I’ve had because of the great people I get to work with.”

Softball player makes all-star team Weekly Staff report

ocal Key West softball standout, Isabella Perez, recently received the honor of being named to the USA Elite Select Futures—Southeast Regional team.

Perez, 11, who currently attends Poinciana Elementary School, joined more than 75 other emerging softball stars in Clermont, Florida recently, where USSSA professional softball players graded the youngsters’ skillsets and talents.

Although Perez listed her primary position as catcher, she also auditioned for middle infielder, which consists of second base and shortstop.

And to put the accomplishment in prospective, Perez was not only selected from the group in Clearwater — she was one of 12 athletes chosen from a simultaneous tryout in Georgia, which hosted players from all over the Southeast.

Zonta Club receives grant The Zonta Club of Key West has received a Community Foundation of the Florida Keys grant award from its new “Vision 20/20” Florida Keys Future Fund. The $4,000 award allows members of the Zonta service club to further develop its new “Journey To Success” workshop, debuted in January, designed to enhance the skills of women and high school students in Key West and the Lower Keys seeking to advance their careers.

Sister Noodle House: A Family Affair

n the short time Sister Noodle House has been open at its unassuming location on North Roosevelt (now blocked, sadly, by a Starbucks), it has developed a strong local following, as was clearly evidenced on my last visit. At our busy lunch service, I personally knew several of the patrons, as did owner Peng, by name. Between running out steaming hot plates from the kitchen, Peng would crack wise with some members of local law enforcement, and schmooze local entrepreneurs, all while deftly attending to every diner’s needs, just like they were family.

My table began with the pan fried dumplings, which had the most delightfully crispy, yet chewy and resistant texture on the exterior, with a savory, moist pork filling. These Page 16 • Key West Weekly • April 8, 2016

Since noodle appears in the title of Sister Noodle (the sister comes from Peng’s own sister-in-law and her sister, who run the kitchen expertly), we thought we would be remiss not to sample a couple noodle dishes. The House Special Lo Mein, with shrimp, chicken, and pork, satisfied my Lo Mein craving in every way. Sister Noodle’s version of this deep, rich Chinese takeout staple will soon have you craving the comfort classic. And no visit to Sister Noodle House would be complete without a piping hot bowl of Pho, the House Special Pho in our case. A heavily, but not over-seasoned broth contained floating morsels of rare beef, Vietnamese meatballs, and tripe: a classic hangover helper or cold remedy, good for whatever ails you.

Sister Noodle also offers a variety of rice dishes, such as the scrumptious Scallion Chicken Stir-Fry, a chef’s special. Tender pieces of chicken are tossed with scallions, red onions, cilantro, and mushrooms in a fiery wok, all while being glazed with a garlicky sauce, which has a subtle, lingering spiciness that I thoroughly enjoyed. Sticky white rice, served on the side, is the perfect accoutrement to soak up that heavenly sauce.

Peng and the Sisters have something to suit every taste, but the menu is indeed very large. Do not hesitate to ask Peng or Sam, our server on every visit, for suggestions. They will not steer you wrong, and after that initial conversation, you will no doubt be ushered into the fold of the loyal Sister Noodle family, as I gladly was.

nchantment: “To impart a magical quality… to delight to a high degree.” The Waterfront Playhouse will be brimming with enchantment when they present the charming romantic comedy, “Enchanted April.”

Nominated for a Best Play Tony Award, “Enchanted April” is based on the novel

by Elizabeth von Arnim and was adapted for the stage by Matthew Barber. It was made into an Oscar-nominated movie starring Miranda Richardson and Joan Plowright in 1992.

But the magic of the story truly comes to life on the stage.

The action moves from the somber, post-WWI atmosphere of London in Act I to the sunny enchantment of the wisterialaden villa of the Italian countryside in Act II. There are also plenty of laughs along the way.

The Daily News raved, “It’s the kind of play that reminds you of why you love theatre.”

“Enchanted April” is about two London housewives who

are dealing with their strained marriages and the incessant London rain. On a daring whim, they decide to rent a villa in Italy for a ladies-only holiday away. Reluctantly, they recruit a pair of difficult upper-class women to share the cost and the experience. Together under the Mediterranean sun, the four women clash — and then begin to bond and bloom — until men once again upset the balance. Daily Variety called the play, "A comical, restorative journey of discovery…from darkness to light, from inhibition to unrestrained joy. Beautiful and theatrically rewarding.”

Opening night is Thursday, April 14 with a gala after party.

There will be one low-priced preview on Wednesday, April 13 and the show will play until April 30. All performances are at 8 p.m.

Roberta Marks’ images on display at Customs House

rt is a visual language, complicated with its own syntax, grammar and vocabulary — but simple with emotion. For decades, artist Roberta Marks has created works that speak to her audience in surprising ways and she has been very successful at it. Beginning on Friday, April 8, the Key West Art and Historical Society will present “Roberta Marks: A Retrospective,” at The Custom House, with more than 50 works of art spanning 40 years of her illustrious career.

Marks, a Florida native and Key West resident since 1981, has exhibited her art in galleries, universities and museums throughout the United States and Europe. She has also influenced the art world as a dedicated teacher, and as a local favorite at The Studios Of Key West.

She said her prolific career has taken her around the globe and has been guided by her dedication to Buddhism, the process of letting go and living in the moment guiding her images.

“I use a lot of things becoming extinct, I want to hold on to the past but I also want to revere it,” said Marks referring to the old suitcases, clocks, antique books and pictures she combines together in a precise and meticulous manner. Looking at her constructions becomes a mesmerizing foray into Marks’s creative process and personal fascinations, “I work with the energy of other people’s leftovers.”

At first inspection, Marks’s work invokes a curious excitement similar to finding a hidden treasure chest or a dusty attic filled with artifacts. It is not just a journey through history but a personal story filled with love, loss, and occasionally the wryest sense of humor.

Mixing found objects, paint, canvas, and paper, Marks builds artwork that engage a sense of familiarity. “I show my work because I want to help people.”

In doing so, she is crafting her own history that is not so dissimilar to others. Marks transforms shared cultural artifacts into chapters telling her story as a whole. In that way, she forms a connection with her audience, without words, rather images filled with meaning.

Michael Gieda, Executive Director of the Customs house, calls Marks a natural fit for the museum. “Roberta has had a long and highly successful career as an artist. Residing in Key West, she is part of the artistic tradition and community that makes the island so special and unique.”

Roberta Marks: Retrospective will be open Friday, April 8 with a special reception from 6-7:30 p.m. and will be on display until June 7.

Sarah Maschal, 38 Why did you start running and how old were you?

I started running when I moved to the Keys when I was 23. I didn’t make a lot of money, and running was free.

I’ve ran the bridge probably 12 times.

What’s your training regimen like? How many miles do you log every week?

I log between 0-30 miles a week. It is all dependent on how many excuses I can come up with why I just can’t seem to fit running in my schedule.

What are your best times?

Those don’t really exist anymore. I haven’t seen a best time since I was 25.

Marathon High School Teacher What’s going through your mind when you race the bridge?

Pre Race: I hope I trained enough for this. What running mix should I listen to? Was that the gun? Did the race start?

Mile 1: Yep, people are moving, there are so many people.

The bridge is shaking! Don’t trip. Did I start out too fast? Too slow? It’s only been one mile!

Mile 2: It’s hot out. I should have brought a water bottle. No, then I would have to carry it.

Where is the water station? Mile 3: Oh look, there is my friend.

How is she running so fast? I should train with her. She has such a cute outfit on, I should get more cute outfits. She looks like a weightless gazelle, I feel like an awkward elephant. I should have trained more. Mile 4: It’s sooo hot. I can’t wait to run through the shower thingy. Someone already finished? How do they run so fast? I wonder where my fast friend is, I really should train with her... Mile 5: I’m almost done. Mile 6: Should I start sprinting? Oh, people are passing me, I should start sprinting. Finish line: Thank goodness that is over. I don’t think I will do this race again. This bottle of water is the best thing ever. OK, I’ll do it again next year. Where is the beer?

What’s your favorite aspect of the 7 Mile Bridge Run? Besides the finish? I also enjoy running over the hump and seeing the swarm of runners. It’s exciting knowing there are only a limited amount of people each year who get to race this span.

Besides the 7 Mile Bridge run, what are some of your other favorite races?

Another favorite race of mine is the Keys 100, it’s such a bonding experience with your team. And, I am a sucker for any themed race, especially if it includes a tutu.

Do you have any inspirational thoughts for other runners?

Move your legs faster than the other runners.

The 35th annual 7 Mile Bridge Run starts at 7 a.m. sharp on Saturday.

Scores of volunteers, more than 1,000 athletes and dozens of beer-handeroutters are ready for the challenge. The racers cross the bridge from East to West, where they are picked up by a swarm of yellow school buses for the return trip to Marathon.

The Seven Mile Bridge Run will shut down traffic both north and south for two and a half hours at the Seven Mile Bridge.

Travelers should plan to be across the bridge by 6:30 a.m. to avoid being stuck on one side or the other. Traffic flow will resume at 9 a.m., but usually takes at least an hour after that to get back to normal flow.

Francisco Cook Ramirez, 25 Why did you start running and how old were you?

I started running when I was in 7th grade in Jacksonville. But I didn’t start running seriously until my junior year of high school. I ran the Bob Hayes Track and Field Invitational and finished third place overall.

What’s your training regimen like?

How many miles do you log every week?

I run three or four miles every day except Sunday. If I have to work in the morning, sometimes I’ll run at midnight or sometimes at sunrise. I also like afternoon runs when it’s hot. I run when no one else would so I get used to it What are your best times?

My best time in a 5k is 17:04. My second half marathon I dropped my time to 1:34.

What’s going through your mind when you race the bridge?

This is the first time I’ve ever participated in the 7 Mile Bridge Run. I missed the last two registrations and am so excited to do it this year. I just turned 25 so I am in a new division. I hope to win and especially be the first young Latino to win.

What’s your racing strategy?

I watch the other runners; I am the cat that chases the mouse.

I’ve always run, but I am not a runner per se. I do CrossFit very regularly, however, at the I AM CrossFit center in the Upper Keys.

What’s your training regimen like?

How many miles do you log every week?

Well, right now I have an eye injury so I am not doing any running because the jarring motion is bad for the condition.

But if I were training, I would probably do a couple of long-distance runs, a couple of 10ks, in preparation. Physically and aerobically, I am already in shape to run that distance, I would just want to prepare my legs for the pounding they are going to take on the bridge run.

No. I have been here my whole life and I really want to explore, meet new people, and live in different places.
