What would be your personal political party platform?

Arthur Giraud of Islamorada has formed the Trump the Trump Party. His platform is decades old, and has elements derived from very influential figures in American culture. “Be excellent to each other, drink and eat whatever makes you happy, and party on dude,” he jested.

Dori Fagundo, of Habanos, stressed how her Equality Party would refocus politics around that cornerstone of modern democracy. Her party takes a positive approach at problem solving, and believes in looking at global issues through an anti-war perspective.

Former State Rep seeking his first county office

T

here were rumors, but many doubted the validity. Yet at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, former Monroe County State Representative Ron Saunders officially threw his hat in the ring for the position of Monroe County Clerk of Court.

The move will most certainly make the Clerk of Court election one of Monroe County’s most enticing conversation pieces throughout election season. Not only is Saunders returning to politics, he is doing so in a potential matchup between the current incumbent, Amy Heavilin. Saunders is employed by the Clerk’s office as general counsel, but shortly after filing, offered his letter of resignation. Policy dictates that Saunders must serve out 20 working days, or four weeks, before stepping down— meaning his last day will be June 17.

For me, I’m not going into this as if I’m running against someone,” said Saunders. “Instead, I’m running for the position. I think I can add some leadership and knowledge to the position and I’m excited about the opportunity to serve.”

Heavilin, a Republican, is already facing heavy opposition from Kevin Madok, who currently serves as senior director of planning for Monroe County.

Heavilin and Madok are set for a showdown in August’s Republican primary. The winner will face Democrat Ron Saunders.

Saunders served as Monroe County’s State Representative in Tallahassee from 19861994 and again from 2006-2012.

Prior to the 2012 election, Madok served as assistant finance director in the Clerk’s office from 2004-2012.

Heavilin is completing her first term in office having previously worked as Finance Director for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

ust in time for Memorial Day Weekend, Monroe County will officially open Rowell’s Waterfront Park in Key Largo to the public.

The kid- and dog-friendly park along Florida Bay will open Friday, May 27, featuring picnic tables, benches, a place to swim (at you own risk) and a launch for kayaks, canoes and standup paddleboards. The park, located at MM 104.5, will be open seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to sunset. And, admission is free.

“This is exactly what we promised on the day we purchased Rowell’s property,” said Monroe County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy, who represents the Upper Keys. “We said we were buying it because the price was right and that we would develop it at a future time. And we are now in the process of beginning that development.”

The eight-acre site was purchased in December 2013 for $5 million and has been used as an event site. The County has been putting together a five-year plan to develop the property into a park.

Saturday, May 28 marks the return of the MaraTri, the local triathlon benefiting youth athletics and athletes with disabilities via the Special Olympics.

This year will be the first year the race is listed as an official USA Triathlon event. There has also been a change to the course to improve safety conditions for the participants. “In previous years traffic guards were utilized for intersecting bike and run paths; the change separates the paths,” said Mark Felts, co-founder of the event. There are two race distances: “Mini” and “Sprint.” The Mini is half of a standard Sprint distance. Organizers are offering a free training session for participants on Friday, May 27, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Sombrero Beach and packet pick up is immediately after. — Gabriel Sanchez

Starting in Key Largo in the wee hours of Saturday morning, relay teams and individual racers will start the 100-mile trek from Key Largo to Key West. Along with the 125 six-person relay teams running, about 350 individuals will be taking on the 100- and 50-mile feats and a 50-kilometer run. Most teams will finish in the evening hours of Saturday into early Sunday morning. “From the first day, we have been very sensitive about being good guests in Monroe County, which of course includes the requirement not to disrupt traffic along Overseas Highway,” said race founder Bob Becker. Racers will start in waves from MM 100 to help with traffic flow. Proceeds from the race support the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. — Kristen Livengood

The Amara Cay GM talks about rented clothes, the chamber and critical paths

S

ome two years ago, Kara Lundgren stood on the highway at MM 81 as workers ripped the old Hampton Inn and Outback Steakhouse signs from her oceanfront resort. The young, type A leader was embarking on her greatest challenge – to transform the dated and ordinary chain resort into a swanky and unique boutique hotel.

When are you going to be transferred? I love the Keys. I thought I was going to take a path from Houston to Austin to New Orleans to Miami Beach and I thought the next step was New York City. I detoured to Islamorada and never left.

I really enjoy the barrier entry hotels in a destination where you have to sell the entire destination. It’s not a hotel on I 75. I realized after working in an airport hotel that I did not want to do that. But to answer your question, I have been here longer than anywhere else and this is my home.

How did you accomplish all this while serving as President of the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce and co-chair of the Mariners Hospital Young Philanthropists Group? I don’t sleep. I catch up on news in the middle of the night. During construction, I was able to serve as the president of the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce because there was not the structured, daily routine of running a hotel with guests.

What does “critical path” mean and when did it enter your lexicon? I learned all sorts of new words when construction began.

Critical path is a reverse start date. What target items need to be hit to meet deadlines. Don’t you own a newspaper?

You are affectionately known in your inner circle as “the princess.” Which princess? Why choose?

For every experience there is a different princess that would fit. Like right now I am Cinderella. I am going to be the belle of the ball at the After Hours.

You have been on the chamber board for seven years. What is it like to work with Judy Hull? She has taught me so much patience.

She has the most patience — so many tourists, so many questions.

She always looks at things from a 360-degree perspective. She works it through and looks at every scenario before she even brings it to the board.

Last year you sustained a severe injury to your foot. Other than that instance, has your life ever been in danger? Most people have a piece of their brain that says, “This is a bad idea.” I wasn’t born with that. I have had knives pulled on me. Bottles broken over my head and never once did I think I was in danger.

How many vehicles and days does it take to move your jewelry collection?

It took two vehicles, but also includes my art collection. Those are my most prized possessions.

You have rented hotel rooms, purses, books, clothes and cars.

The one thing you will never rent is … a date. I believe in the enterpise of renting. But not in the case of a friend, date or child. Unless it is for charity.

What does it mean to work hard?

Most days it means that I wasn’t blessed enough to work smart. In all honesty it means having a passion for what you do every day.

You are known as an open book.

What is the first sentence in the book?

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who did not want to grow up and was never told “no.”

What is your worst kept secret?

I rent all my clothes.

You are severely allergic to mosquitoes. Does this mean you have an affinity for bats and lizards? From a distance I love them dearly. I get super sick. Even the no-see-ums. When I was 12 years old I fell into a beehive and stung so many times that I was rushed to the emergency room.

What is a sweet deal?

A room at Amara Cay on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. Those are the best deals. Only amateurs go out on weekends. The rest of us go out on Thursdays … and Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

You are co-chair of the Young Philanthropists at Mariners Hospital. Why young philanthropists?

I believe that everyone should have a cause that they believe in. I was watching people much more successful and much older than I who were doing so many great things. And I didn’t have a million dollars or even $50,000 dollars. Building a young business network allowed people to instill a) a community hospital and b) give to something. It gets in the mentality. I believe fully in what the hospital does.

It allowed me to work with some great people. That is where I met Audra Hill, who is now one of my best friends. It was a great group of people.

If you could have martinis with one person, alive or dead, who would it be?

Princess Diana. I want to know what happened in the car that night. I believe she was taken out. There is a story there.

What was the last book you read?

“Creativity, Inc.” by Ed Catmull. It’s about the man who built Pixar against all odds. He wrote, “Trust the process.

Assume the process will fix things.”

If you could turn back time, what would you change?

I would have to go back to 1972 and rotate this building I work in everyday so that more of it faces the ocean.

What costs $40,000?

My buffet table. It gets cold, it gets hot and it is also my buffet table.

“I

f you’ve ever brought a beer to a job interview, you might have Keys Disease.” That’s one of the telling statements in a new book – “You Might Have Keys Disease,” by Sue Beal of Key Largo. Purchases of the book will help fund the newly established Musicians Relief Fund.

The book contains humorous observations by Beal, a 30-year Keys resident and owner of the graphic design firm Island Information Services, on the unique traits of long-time Keys residents. The book was illustrated by the recently deceased John McKinna, a talented illustrator, a professional musician for 40 years, and operations manager for Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo.

“Over the years, I’ve made my own observations and listened to many others comment on the symptoms of Keys Disease, and one day I just started jotting them down,” said Beal.

Denise Malefyt, president of Prestige Publishing, Inc. and the book’s publisher, noted that many Keys musicians are just an illness or accident away from financial troubles. “Together we decided to publish the observations as a book, selling it to build a fund to help our musicians during tough times,” said Malefyt.

“John McKinna volunteered his talents to illustrate the project, and the idea took off.”

A book release signing and fundraiser will be held on Monday, May 23, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Gilbert’s Tiki Bar, MM 108.

“Keys music is an integral part of life in these islands, and we are pleased to be able to help our local musicians over rough spots,” said Rob LeBrun, general manager of Gilberts. Gilberts is not only hosting the event, but funded the first printing of “Keys Disease.”

Performing at the event are Sweetwater, Kevin Hurley, Bobbe Brown, Scott Youngberg, The Stingrays and more.

All proceeds from the sale of the book and fundraiser will go to the Musicians Fund, which will be administered by Tavernier Elks Lodge 1872. The copies of the book are $10 and can be purchased at the event, the Elks Lodge, or at www.mykeysdisease. com.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you?

I belong to the National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, and Environmental Club. These clubs allow me to be of service to the community and a role model to others.

NSHS and Environmental Club help me further expand my knowledge for science.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why?

My chemistry teacher Ms. Rehmann has inspired me. She has always encouraged me to challenge myself.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why?

My science classes have ultimately prepared me the most, as I would like to pursue a career in the field of science. These classes also gave me the opportunity to compete at the Florida State Science Fair.

Do you tweet? Who do you follow on Twitter?

No. What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges?

Pollution and overfishing are big challenges the Keys face. Pollution destroys mangrove and coral reef ecosystems. Overfishing can also lead to economic distress down here. As a member of Environmental Club, we often coordinate cleanups to better our community.

What are your plans after high school?

My plans after high school are to hopefully attend North Carolina State University to major in forensic science.

After college I would like to pursue a career with the FBI as a forensic anthropologist.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not?

Due to my chosen career path, I do not believe I will have a permanent home, but the Keys will always be special.

Its wooden walls and vintage feel transport patrons to the Serengeti, except … no, that’s the Florida Keys beautiful ocean right outside the windows.

For more than 12 years, Tim Swann has tended the needs of hunter and lush alike at the Safari Lounge and knows exactly what you need after a long day of hunting – the Horny Rhino. Made from Amarula (of the murula tree, indig-

therside Board Sports, and Keys Cable Park, is gearing up for its five days of Epic Adventure camp for kids ages 8-12. The park is scheduled to host the camp in three sessions, June 20-24, July 11-15, and August 1-5. The camp itself is divided into five days where campers of all expertise levels are encouraged to learn new skills. There are days solely dedicated to wakeboarding, rock climbing, paddle boarding, snorkeling, sailing, kiteboarding, and skate boarding.

The staff of Adventure Camp also see to it that campers are taught important skills in teambuilding, ecosystem conservation, composting and recycling. Adventure camp is structured to have campers learn and play simultaneously.

“I designed the camp with my own children in mind. I wanted to build something my son would enjoy and that is educational,” said Mike Walsh of Otherside Boardsports and the Keys Cable Park. “We live on an island, which brings its own inherent problems and opportunities. There are undertones of our eco-friendly mentality in everything we do, and our kids should NEVER say that they have nothing to do.”

Adventure Camp utilizes moments of fun as teaching opportunities for campers trying to learn more about their surroundings. The facilities at Keys Cable Park allow for the kids to be immersed in the local flora and coastal areas.

“Part of our goal is to be provocative,” said Matthew Sexton of Keys Cable Park. We have had kids who came, had a lot of fun, then took home what they’ve learned and started new recycling programs, or began composting.”

Sexton said that parents of campers have told him how their children have a newfound appreciation of their role in eco-conservation.

He said it’s a great feeling to learn about the camp’s impact.

“Watching the campers come and turn into rad little children is the best feeling,” Sexton said. “We want kids to come and have fun learning new skills and also learn that they have a part in protecting where they play.”

ucked in quietly at the back of Stock Island, the COAST property looks like an explorer’s playground, or the perfect place for kids to play during the summer — wooden and rustic — and ready for building, discovering, and getting a little dirty.

“Basic human instinct draws to our childish wants and desires to be outside in nature, to sweat, and run, and fall down and get back up,” said COAST founder and creative director Billy Kearins and dad to a 3-and-a-half-year-old and 8-year-old. “These kids don’t even think about cell phones, iPads and video games when they are here.”

COAST offers two summer programs, the weeklong “Original” camp and the weeklong “Along the Coast” camp, starting June 13 and running through August 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In the original camp, the lineup is jewelry making, beach exploring and environmental ecology, screen printing, survival skills, skateboard making, and more. The week runs $325 for 6 to 12 year olds. (The first week, June 13-17, will “Camp should be be open for 4 to 8 year olds.)

The Along the Coast camp follows the same philosophy. “If the kids are having fun exploring a spot or climbing on a tree, we can stay there,” said Kearins. “It’s rugged, like playing in the dirt, finding shells,” said Caroline, mother to 7-year-old Samara who participated last year. “The creativity just pours out of the kids.”
