‘Ready for Battle’ or ‘Prêts au Combat’ is the theme of this year’s event as we welcome the French to New Zealand and prepare ourselves for tomorrows Test, the first of the Steinlager Series. Excitement and a little trepidation will be on the cards as the French enter the revered grounds of Eden Park. Joining us today are two of the greatest rugby players to wear the number 13 jersey – All Black’s Frank Bunce and France’s Phillipe Sella. The legendary pair will, share some accounts of their time on the field and impart their views on the game ahead, all under the entertaining guidance of MC Scotty Stevenson. For the third year in a row this event is supported by Winger Motors Maserati as our Premium Sponsor. This partnership has grown over the years and we are thrilled to have Wayne Leach and his team as a key part of the day. For Keystone, the importance of this day is significant as the outcome greatly assists us in determining our future student intake. The past five years success has resulted in significant growth for the Trust and we are presently supporting 36 students in their tertiary pursuits right around New Zealand. This success would not have happened without the belief and support we have gained from thirty-three of NZ’s finest property and construction companies. This group whose unwavering dedication has ensured we remain as the primary source of scholarship funding in our sector.

Scotty Stevenson is a sports broadcaster and writer with more than a decade’s experience behind the microphone for SKY Sport. He has covered major sporting events around the world, including the Olympic Games, Olympic Winter Games, Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup. He has been previously recognised as New Zealand Sport Feature Writer of the Year and is also the author of four best-selling biographies, Beaver- The Stephen Donald Story, Legacy – Sir Gordon Tietjens, The Kiwi Pair, and Winging It – Cory Jane. He is currently working on his latest rugby book project and also writes regularly for The Spinoff and RugbyPass, for whom he also hosts a weekly podcast, The Shortball, with All Blacks’ centenarian Mils Muliaina.
Frank Bunce was born in Auckland and attended Mangere College and began his representative career at the Manukau club, in 1991 he moved to North Harbour, which is where his rugby career really took off. Although primarily of Niuean decent, Bunce was selected to play for Western Samoa, receiving international attention at the 1991 World Cup where the team reached the quarterfinals. His performance brought him to the attention of selectors and he began playing for the All Blacks in 1992. After just one match at second five eight position, Bunce became the regular All Black centre until 1997.At the close of his international career, aged 35 he was New Zealand’s most capped test centre at the time.

French legend Philippe Sella is widely recognised as one of the finest players of his generation and touted as the world’s best centre of the 80s and 90s, a theory evidenced by his presence in the French team for 13 consecutive seasons. Sella also held the record number of international caps - 111- for the best part of 13 years and was the first rugby player to ever reach 100 Test caps. Over his playing years from 1982 to 1995 Sella faced the All Blacks 10 times and was part of that winning team that won 23-20 against the All Blacks in 1994. Sella is now head coach of Top 14 side Agen, a team “very close to his heart”.
