Getting management buy-in

While social media usage is growing at a rapid rate, getting management to recognise its value and adopt its usage for business purposes can be a challenge for HR. This is where hard numbers

and data come into play, says Nagaldinne, who will share strategies on how HR can transform their organisations to embrace the social era.

A first step would be to monitor the social network usage of employees to see what networks and tools they are using. HR can also do research on the various enterprise social networks available and consult real-life case studies to see how other organisations are implementing them, Nagaldinne says.

One of the best things about adopting social media is that it does not have a steep learning curve. “Once you have committed yourself to a social platform, you will see that there is very little training or nudging that you will need to do to get this adopted. Man has always been inherently social and the platform is just an extension of something that comes easily,” he says.

Creating the employee social experience

Forward-thinking organisations are able to replicate the offline world online, creating social experiences at work that mirror an employee’s actual world.

To replicate this movement at the workplace, one needs to look at what the workplace in the social era will mean to employees, Nagaldinne says. “At the very minimum, you will need to create a workspace that allows for self-expression by your employees and give them resources to do that.”

Once HR gets the ball rolling, employees will become an organisation’s most loyal soldiers or its harshest critics on everything that will be eventually served to clients. “The more the chatter on these platforms, the more real are the conversations. Real conversations with real people will positively impact the quality of your products and services,” says Nagaldinne who will also address the pitfalls and success factors of using social media in HR. However, the organisation must also remember to close this feedback loop. “You will need to be ready to hear your employees express their opinions about everything in your organisation and then act upon what you are hearing,” Nagaldinne says.

Leading organisational change

The social era marks a time of many new developments and HR can play a central role in leading organisational change.

Helping to create new leadership competencies in the workforce, partnering with the business on the critical question of how work gets done, embracing social technologies, sustaining new employee social networks, and drowning out the voice of opponents are just some of the ways to achieve this, says Nagaldinne. “The seat at the table for HR is open – transforming your organisation to embrace the social era will get you a perpetual invitation to it.”

In his HR Summit presentation, Nagaldinne will also touch upon how the concept of ‘Social Quotient’ factors in the success of a business. ‘Our ability to harness social technologies and build our business and people strategies around the concept of social will transform how we communicate, collaborate and create.”

R

upturing his Achilles tendon six months before the 1994 Commonwealth Games was one of the biggest challenges that former gymnast Brennon Dowrick faced in his life as a professional athlete. However, he persevered by combining twice-daily physiotherapy sessions with swimming therapy. “By focusing on the positives, hard work and using my foundation knowledge, I was able to do what everyone else thought was impossible,” he says.

Dowrick went on to win the gold medal for his Pommel Horse routine at the Games. Twelve years on, he still performs the same routine with aplomb during conference presentations, enrapturing the crowd. Audiences love to hear the secrets of success and how ordinary people can achieve great things, Dowrick says. “It is one thing to show video footage but performing something live and in front of everyone gives the message more substance and impact.”

Getting the basics right

Mastering the basic skills of your own profession can act as a platform or foundation to build on and climb towards the success and results you are striving for.

And HR practitioners more than anyone else, need to have good foundation skills, says Dowrick.

“This aids them in their own careers but more importantly allows them to teach and implement skills to their own team. The best HR practitioners have excellent basics which they use to build on and expand their knowledge and skills tremendously,” Dowrick says.

“Given that it is now 12 years since I retired, and over 20 years since I performed a Gold Medal winning Pommel Horse routine, I like to set myself the challenge of performing the same routine at my keynote presentations. During his HR Summit presentation, Dowrick will also talk about the long-term efforts needed to reach desired outcomes and the importance of processes.

Nurturing employees to produce results

There are many parallels between achieving in business and success in elite sport, Dowrick says. “As I continue to work with companies around the world I can see that in fact elite sport is a simplification of successful business models.”

In sports, an athlete is supported by a team of people so that they can consistently produce their best results. Both the athlete and the team get rewarded in the process. “I would love to see businesses giving that same attention to every employee to help them thrive,” Dowrick explains.

“Individual employees will feel valued and supported and put in their best efforts and their companies will see their results and profits increase.”

About the speaker Brennon Dowrick is one of Australia’s most successful gymnasts. He represented Australia in two Olympic Games, three Commonwealth Games, and seven World Championships. Dowrick was also Australia’s first ever gymnastics Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 1990, a feat he repeated in 1994. He also was Australia’s first Olympic finalist in gymnastics, at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

Dowrick always enjoyed public speaking as a teenager and was often asked to speak to corporate groups and associations that visited the Australian Institute of Sport. “Usually the delegate would beg me to “show them some gymnastics,” to which he would perform, for example, a hand stand or back flip.

After he retired from gymnastics in 2000, public speaking became Dowrick’s full-time career. This is when he decided to integrate a Pommel Horse routine into his presentation to reinforce the steps that he took towards long term success. This saw demand for his presentations increase 10-fold and he spoke at the HR Summit in Singapore in 2003. “Nine years, and some 700 presentations later, I am really looking forward to speaking to HR practitioners at the 10th Anniversary Summit,” Dowrick concludes.
