President's Corner:

Year End Reflections Welcome to December and the heart of the holiday season! It’s hard to believe we’ve reached the final newsletter of 2025. What a remarkable year it has been for the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce and for our community as a whole. When I stepped into the role of Chamber President on January 1, I knew we had important work ahead of us that would require collaboration, commitment, and a shared passion for supporting the business community of the Upper Keys. As I reflect on the past twelve months, I am deeply honored to serve you and incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together. For those who attended our November luncheon and heard the annual report, you already know that 2025 brought several major milestones. One of the most meaningful achievements of the year was paying off the mortgage on our Chamber building. This accomplishment strengthens our foundation—literally and financially—and allows us to reinvest more resources into programs, advocacy, and services that directly support our members. We also celebrated steady membership growth, and I am thrilled to say that your Chamber is on the strongest financial footing we’ve seen in years. Member engagement is at an all-time high, and our team has been delighted to work with so many of you on marketing initiatives, event participation, community visibility, and business-to-business connections. Whether you reached out for help promoting an event, shared updates for our social platforms, or simply stopped in to say hello, your involvement is what makes this Chamber a vibrant and responsive partner in your success.

Of course, we also know that many of our tourism-based businesses experienced a slower-than-expected season this year. The national travel landscape has been shaped by economic headwinds, softening consumer confidence, and reduced international visitation—factors that have challenged destinations across the U.S. Yet, despite these pressures, the Florida Keys have continued to stand out as a rare bright spot in the broader travel industry. Kara Franker, President & CEO of Visit Florida Keys and the Tourist Development Council, recently shared an encouraging look ahead. Her message was clear: the outlook for 2026 is strong, steady, and filled with opportunity. In fact, while U.S. travel demand has dipped in many regions, most of the Keys have outperformed national averages by a significant margin. According to Franker, these numbers tell an important story: travelers still see extraordinary value in the Florida Keys. She highlighted several reasons for this resilience, including our unmatched natural beauty, world-class water-based recreation, strong drivemarket appeal, short booking windows that encourage last-minute travel, and a globally recognized brand rooted in authenticity, culture, and responsible enjoyment of nature. More and more, travelers are seeking meaningful, high-quality experiences. They want to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with the extraordinary. That puts the Keys exactly where we want to be—in the sweet spot of traveler demand, both now and heading into 2026. Franker also emphasized that the TDC is not

simply watching these trends; they are proactively innovating, strengthening long-term strategies, and developing forward-looking initiatives to support both our tourism partners and the broader community. This optimistic forecast is exactly the kind of news we are grateful to end the year on. It validates the hard work of our local businesses, hospitality teams, and service providers, and it gives us strong momentum heading into the new year. As we prepare to close out 2025, I want to extend my warmest wishes to each of you. May your holiday season be filled with joy, peace, and meaningful time with the people who matter most. I am grateful for your trust, your partnership, and your continued commitment to making Key Largo a thriving, welcoming, and extraordinary place to live, work, and visit. Wishing you happy holidays and a prosperous, exciting new year ahead! I look forward to all we will accomplish together in 2026. DECEMBER 2025 3

Turn Your Small Business into a Beloved Brand Establishing a strong brand is key for any business. Branding represents your company internally and externally, sets you apart from the competition, tells people who you are and what matters to you, and encourages them to form an emotional connection. But branding has little value in a vacuum. To make a lasting impression on potential customers, you need to share your brand identity across multiple touchpoints to gain visibility, boost sales, and increase engagement. 1. Share your brand story A brand story is a brief narrative that explains how and why your business came to be. It often includes the idea that first inspired the company, core guiding principles, and background on the founder and their mission. These details ultimately help customers connect more deeply with your brand. 2. Partner with influencers A successful influencer marketing strategy accomplishes two goals: It boosts brand awareness by helping you reach new target audiences, and it influences how those audiences see your brand. Brands can partner with influencers in a variety of ways, from sponsored posts and testimonials to more organic product seeding, where brands gift free products to influencers in the hopes that those who like it will post about it. 3. Run online ads Paid advertising can quickly build brand awareness and increase your business presence in key digital spaces like social media, search engines, and publications. 6

DECEMBER 2025

4. Create valuable content If expertise is a key part of your brand identity, create content that goes deep on nuance and detail, and tailor it for a niche audience. The goal of this type of content isn't to promote your products. Rather, it exists to solve a problem or otherwise provide value to the reader. Doing so can help you establish a strong brand identity by positioning yourself and your brand as an expert in a particular subject. Content strategies to explore include starting an email newsletter or sharing thought leadership or educational posts on social media channels. 5. Start a loyalty program Customer loyalty programs recognize and reward your business's most loyal clients. You can use them to build customer loyalty, increase sales, incentivize repeat purchases, and encourage your fans to promote your company to others. They're also a chance to reinforce brand messages about your commitment to customer service and your investment in customer relationships. A loyalty program also provides additional branded touchpoints for customers: Your loyalty program materials, which could include exclusive email messages, website pages, and even an app, are chances to showcase your brand's visual identity and voice. 6. Create brand videos A brand video is a brief narrative video that promotes your brand identity, products, or both. Many companies use them to share

brand stories, educate consumers, or introduce the faces behind the brand. 7. Invest in custom packaging Custom ecommerce packaging adds a branded touchpoint to an important moment in your customer journey: the moment they receive and open a product. Packaging can also help you make a strong first impression. Using custom shippers and mailers to provide brand continuity and set yourself apart from the competition. For example, you might send mailers in your brand's signature colors or print custom welcome text on package exteriors. 8. Solicit user-generated content User-generated content (UGC) is any content your audience creates and shares about your brand. It can include product photos and videos, social media comments or posts, and reviews posted on your company website or third-party review platforms. You can also solicit UGC from happy customers through campaigns, such as contests, giveaways, and hashtag campaigns. These incentivize users to create and share content featuring your brand. To maximize the benefits, include parameters that encourage the types of content you want. 9. Collaborate with other brands Strategic partnerships with other brands can increase your brand awareness by providing access to your partner's audience. They can also increase brand affinity by lending your brand image positive attributes from the other company's brand identity. A collaboration could mean creating a unique product offering that combines the strengths of each partner brand, or you might team up with another company to promote each other's products or services

10. Commit to a cause According to a recent Statista survey, 61% of global consumers say it's important that a brand's core values align with their own. Additionally, 51% of global consumers say it's very or extremely important for brands to give them a way to connect with those who share their values or lifestyle, according to the 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer report. Your brand values might be built into your product, such as sustainable electric toothbrush brand Suri's plant-based recyclable brush heads. Or, you might share your values through your business practices, like sock brand Bombas does by donating one item for every item a customer purchases. 11. Show up in real life In-person events can also help you increase awareness and build positive associations with your

brand. Choose an event that reinforces a key element of brand identity, provides value to your target audience, and aligns with your business and marketing goals. 12. Prioritize brand consistency Repetition is key to building a strong brand identity, so maintain consistency across brand and marketing collateral. Confirm that your brand guidelines are accurate and current and that your marketing team can easily access them. Use caution changing your brand identity without a plan to implement those changes. Even if you have a perfect approach to your branding, even if it's the best thing that's ever been created, if it's not consistent across everything that you're doing and you don't also have the opportunity to hit your market with it over and over and over again, it's not going to matter.

13. Create branded merch Branded merchandise is any product featuring one of your company's identifying brand assets, such as your name, your logo, or a recognizable slogan. Selling or giving away branded merch can boost brand awareness, encourage brand loyalty, and improve your brand's reputation. Think of it like a mini version of influencer marketing, where each branded coffee mug or zip hoodie signals the owner's implicit endorsement of your brand. To maximize the benefits to your company, create products that correspond with an element of your brand identity, whether that's the value you offer or your brand's distinctive personality. Red Chile Pork Tamales

Tamales are a traditional holiday food, particularly central to Christmas celebrations in Latino cultures. The preparation is a communal, time-consuming process where families gather to make large batches with various fillings, such as pork, chicken, or beans, wrapped in masa and corn husks.

Ingredients

Braised Pork: X 1 tablespoon vegetable oil X 1 medium onion, chopped X Kosher salt and freshly ground black

pepper

X 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth X 6 dried guajillo chiles, stemmed and

seeded

X 3 dried ancho chiles, stemmed and

seeded

X 3 dried pasilla chiles, stemmed and

seeded

X 2 teaspoons ground cumin X 2 teaspoons dried Mexican oregano X 6 cloves garlic X 2 1/2 pounds boneless pork shoulder,

fat trimmed, cut into 2-inch pieces

X 2 bay leaves X 32 dried corn husks X 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Masa Dough: X 10 ounces lard, such as Manteca X 1/2 teaspoon baking powder X 1/2 teaspoon chile powder X Kosher salt X 4 cups masa harina (instant corn flour)

for tamales, such as Maseca Tamal

X 2 1/2 to 3 cups low-sodium chicken

broth

X Lime wedges, for serving, optiona

Instructions

1. For the braised pork: Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the onion, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a few grinds black pepper and cook until just tender, about 5 minutes. Add the chicken broth and guajillo, ancho and pasilla chiles and bring to a boil. Cover, turn off the heat and let sit until the chiles have softened, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a blender with the cumin, oregano, garlic, 2 teaspoons salt and a few grinds black pepper and puree until very smooth. 2. Pour the sauce back into the Dutch oven, then add the pork and bay leaves. Cover and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium low to maintain a steady simmer and cook until the pork is very tender and the sauce is brick red, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. 3. Meanwhile, soak the corn husks in a bowl of hot water, using a plate to keep them submerged, until pliable, about 1 hour. 4. Discard the bay leaves from the pork, then shred the pork with 2 forks. Stir in the apple cider vinegar; taste and adjust the seasoning with more salt and pepper. Set aside to cool slightly. 5. For the masa dough: Beat the lard, baking powder, chile powder and 1 teaspoon salt in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until smooth and light in texture, about 2 minutes. (Alternatively, use a stand mixer with the paddle

attachment.) Reduce the speed to low and add the masa harina. Once just incorporated, slowly add 2 1/2 cups of the chicken broth and mix until combined, 2 to 4 minutes. Test the dough by placing a 1/2-teaspoon dollop in a cup of cold water--it should float. If not, add the remaining 1/2 cup broth and mix until combined, about 2 minutes more. This will ensure that the masa dough is light and fluffy. 6. Drain the husks and pat dry. Starting 1/2 inch from the wide end of a husk, spread about 3 tablespoons of the masa dough down the length of the husk, leaving a 1-inch border on the sides. Spoon 2 heaping tablespoons of the pork filling down the center of the dough, then fold in the sides of the husk, wrapping the dough around the filling. Fold up the narrow end of the husk. Repeat with the remaining husks, dough and filling. 7. Set a steamer basket in a large pot filled with 1 to 2 inches of water. Arrange the tamales standing open-end up in the steamer. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then cover and steam until the dough is firm, 45 to 50 minutes. Remove from the steamer and cool slightly before unwrapping. Serve with lime wedges if desired. Recipe Source: Food Network
