Marine Menagerie Amongst Mangroves Theater of the Sea:
ADVERTORIAL
Where can a family spend a full day interacting with dolphins, sea lions, sharks, and rays, enjoy a few hours relaxing on the beach, and go on a bottomless boat ride?
Located halfway between Miami and Key West, Theater of the Sea has been welcoming visitors to the Florida Keys since 1946. This family-owned business has committed to providing a wonderful home for many rescued animals, including endangered sea turtles, sea lions, crocodilians, and parrots while educating the public via live shows and up-close animal interactions. Many of the rescued animals require specialized, long-term care and treatment, all of which is funded by patronage alone. Upon approaching the park visitors will notice the beautiful fountains, giant conch shell, and award-winning landscaping. After purchasing their tickets,
visitors leave the chaos and havoc of their daily lives and step into a world filled with beautiful green foliage, clearly paved paths, and an amazing menagerie of animals. Not only is all this a visual treat for visitors but the greenery and three-acre natural lagoons provide valuable enrichment for the animals as well!
Guests can expect to spend 2-3 hours exploring the park while getting an intimate feel of a variety of species native to the Florida Keys. There is always something exciting going on as the as the show schedule is continuous, ensuring that you won’t have to choose one over the other. Unique to Theater of the Sea is their famous dolphin show, a stunning showcase of acrobatics and water work. As they stroll the property, guests will also have opportunities to watch a sea lion show, parrot show, learn about sea turtles,
sting rays and sharks, and observe a crocodilian training session.
Children and adults of all ages will have ample opportunities to interact with the animals during their visit. Dolphin lovers will delight in the dolphin swim while snorkeling beside them. Included in this experience are dorsal tows, hugs, and kisses. Those a little less daring can do the shallow water dolphin swim, which entails interacting with the dolphins while standing in three to four feet of water. Want to join the fun but don’t want to get wet? Even land lovers can interact with the dolphins and get a few kisses too in the “Meet
the Dolphin” program. Many encounters are also available with sea lions, nurse sharks, sea turtles, sting rays, crocodilians, and parrots!
After a stroll around the park, visitors can enjoy a quick bite to eat at Papa’s Grill then relax at the lagoon-side beach.
As a timeless tradition of the Florida Keys, Theater of the Sea is something you will not want to miss. For more information or to make reservations, go to theaterofthesea.com, or call 305-664-2431.

Our Most Notable Beaches
WRITTEN BY MANUELA C. MOBLEY
Your guide to the must-visit beach stops from Key Largo to Key West
When you think of the Florida Keys, visions of turquoise water, swaying palms, and a tropical escape come to mind. But if your dream island getaway includes endless stretches of soft, sandy beaches, you might be in for a surprise.
Unlike mainland Florida, the Keys aren’t known for sprawling shorelines. These coral islands are edged more by mangroves and rocky coastlines than by long sandy beaches. Still, for those in the know, there are a handful of stunning beach spots—some tucked away, others part of well-loved parks—worth seeking out. Here’s a guide to some of the most notable beaches accessible by land across the Keys:
Mile Marker 102.5 — Key Largo
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
102601 Overseas Hwy
Pennekamp is best known for snorkeling and diving, but it also has two small, man-made beaches ideal for relaxing after exploring the underwater world. Shaded picnic spots, rentals, and boat tours make this a great all-day stop.
Mile Marker 92.5 — Tavernier
Harry Harris Park
50 E. Beach Road
This local favorite features a protected beach that’s perfect for kids, plus picnic pavilions, playgrounds, and calm waters for a low-key day in the sun. It’s especially lively on weekends when locals come use the park.
Mile Marker 73 — Lower Matecumbe
Anne’s Beach
This peaceful, nontraditional beach is more about wading and lounging than sandcastles. A scenic boardwalk connects shaded picnic areas to sandy coves, where you can set your chair right in the shallow, clear water.
Mile Marker 56.2 — Marathon
Curry Hammock State Park
56200 Overseas Hwy
Wide and quiet, this sandy beach is a hit with kiteboarders and nature lovers. It’s perfect for a relaxing day enjoying gentle breezes soft sand, and a good book—or watching impressive watersport action.
Mile Marker 50 — Marathon
Sombrero Beach
200 36th St. Ocean
One of the Keys’ hidden gems, Sombrero Beach is a true sandy beach with calm, swimmable water. Add in restrooms, picnic
areas, and playgrounds, and you’ve got a beach day classic.
Mile Marker 37 — Big Pine Key
Bahia Honda State Park
36850 Overseas Hwy
This popular park features three beaches, stunning views, and some of the clearest water in the Keys. It’s a go-to for snorkeling, kayaking, or just soaking up the tropical vibes under swaying palms.
Mile Marker 0 — Key West
Clarence S. Higgs Memorial Beach
1000 Atlantic Blvd
Located near downtown Key West, Higgs Beach is a convenient sandy stretch with restaurants, shaded lounge areas, and volleyball courts. It’s one of the few real beaches on the island—ideal for a quick dip or full beach day.
Tips for the Road
• Timing is everything: Arrive early for easier parking and fewer crowds
• Bring water shoes: Some beaches have rocky areas or seagrass.
• Watch the tides: At spots like Anne’s Beach, low tide means more room to wade and explore.
• Stay sun-safe: Many beaches offer little natural shade, so bring umbrellas, sunshades or hats.

Get ready to eat your way through paradise! The Key Largo Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to introduce Taste the Keys, a month-long culinary celebration showcasing the diverse and delicious cuisine of Key Largo and the Upper Keys. Inspired by Miami Spice, this flavorful adventure runs October 1–31, 2025, and invites food lovers to enjoy specially crafted prix fixe menus at participating restaurants.
Financial Strength
But this isn’t just any dining event—it’s a fantasy feast quest through the islands. Expect more than just traditional threecourse meals. We’re teaming up with select restaurants and hotels to create signature dining experiences that reflect the spirit and flavor of the Florida Keys. Think fresh seafood, Caribbean flair, tropical cocktails, and a generous serving of local hospitality. Adding even more spice to the month, Taste the Keys Trolley Foodie Tours will roll out on select Thursday evenings. These guided tours whisk up to 40 guests on a culinary crawl to 4–5 top eateries, where each stop includes a curated “taste” and paired drink. After a successful preview event in 2024, we’re excited to bring this experience back for more unforgettable foodie fun.
We welcome restaurants and hotels across the Keys to participate, but this year’s spotlight shines on Key Largo and the Upper Keys. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, Taste the Keys promises a delicious dive into our island cuisine.

A Taste of Little Italy in the Florida Keys
ADVERTORIAL
Local Keys residents Tony and Isis Wright started building Italian Food Company four years ago with a hopeful idea. Their pandemic origins seem like an unlikely venture with no prior restaurant experience and the state of the service industry in flux. Fast-forward to 2024, and they now have three locations, a loyal following, Italian chefs and top-grade pizza makers, and a new waterside concept slated to open in the coming months.
Italian Food Company Key Largo was the first to open in 2021 and is a testament to their attention to detail and passion for food. Both grew up in a culture of generous hospitality and the comfort of home-cooked food, with large extended family gatherings and the spirit of shared meals ingrained in their upbringings. The couple leaned heavily on Tony’s Italian family and culture, the son of an American Military veteran and Sicilian mother with a deep repository of authentic recipes. The Key Largo restaurant opened with authentic Neapolitan pizzas and many treasured recipes shared by Tony’s mother, Maria. “Dishes like eggplant parmigiana, lasagna, and especially the polpette al sugo (meatballs) were weekend favorites in our family and are now staples at Italian Food Company,” Isis explains. Maria, who lives a few miles from the restaurant, hand rolls the meatballs every Tuesday, Isis says. It’s a labor of love, she details, and the job of meatballs, fresh sauces, soups, and baked pasta is always under the
watchful eye of Maria and the entire family.
Six months after opening their flagship Key Largo location, serendipity and a wave of community support emboldened the Wrights to invest their talents and love of everything Italy in the neighboring Village of Islamorada. There were a few more Italians in town, with the Wrights wooing native Italian Chef Raffaele and tenured Italian servers from Miami to take a chance on the concept of Italian Food Company. “There is a sensory and emotional experience that happens when you travel to Italy,” Isis describes. “Artisans and trades are very much alive in Italy with handpainted ceramics, beautiful landscapes and architecture, a true farm-to-table experience with fresh ingredients, and the laughter and chatter of Italians enjoying life,” she adds. The Wrights took a page from the scenic town of Taormina, Italy, and imported all the essentials to re-create Authentic Italy. The town Mayor of Taormina may give the Wrights a Key to their city, with local Artisan Franco being the chief exporter of all their intricate hand-painted lava tables. Their tables, handpainted murals, imported products, family recipes, and native Italian staff make for a truly Italian experience without a passport. Islamorada made its mark on the dining scene, bringing an extensive menu of seafood appetizers, meat and fish entrees, pastas, and daily specials.
Italy’s food culture has
regional nuances, and they found an opportunity to highlight Roman-style pizzas, sandwiches, and other delights with their third location in Tavernier, Italian Food Company Express. One aspect of Italian Food Company that the owners are most proud of is their appeal to large demographic and generational families. “We have so many groups and families share their special moments with us; it’s very inspiring,” Isis mentions. In Italy, restaurants and neighborhood eateries are where people go to connect, talk, and share stories. “Everyone feels at home at our restaurants, and it is not uncommon for our guests to share selfies and a hug with one of our staff before leaving,” Isis adds. Their third location was previously home to beloved Chad’s Deli, and the Wrights have picked up where the late Chad Gardener left off, offering locals and visitors alike a second home with fresh, flavorful meals served with a bit of Italian love.
Word travels fast in Italy, with Italian tourists stopping at one of the Italian Food Company locations before heading south to Key West. We caught a couple asking the owner, Tony, “Parla Italiano?” in their Tavernier location, to which they chatted and laughed while Tony
recommended an assortment of appetizers and entrees. The local chapter of the Sons and Daughters of Italy makes their weekly rounds at Italian Food Company, and it seems, indeed, a burgeoning community of Keys Italians is taking root and adding a bountiful breadth of flavors and cultural beauty to the Island chain of the Florida Keys. In their unintentional journey as restauranteurs, the Wrights made another big splash with a new concept in the summer of 2024. That’s when they opened Lido 73, a restaurant/snack cafe modeled on a favorite beach club from Taormina, Sicily, with grilled meats and fish, sandwiches, and flatbreads, and a “fun atmosphere.”
The new addition is in a waterside location off Tavernier Creek and accessible by boat or land.” We have many memories of the Mazzaro beach club in Taormina with our family and friends. It is a dream that we’ll be able to share bits and pieces of the things that have filled our hearts with our community and visiting guests. “ Isis concludes.
For information on Italian Food Company, visit their website at www.italianfoodcompany.com. Make sure to follow them on Instagram @theitalianfoodcompany for updates on IFC and Lido 73.

Paws & Claws:
Embracing Key Largo’s Four-Legged Residents
WRITTEN BY SUZI YOUNGBERG
Nestled in the heart of Key Largo, amid the tranquil beauty of our coastal paradise, lies a community that cherishes its furry companions just as much as its breathtaking vistas. From the loyal dogs that accompany us on sunset strolls to the curious cats that share our homes, pets are an integral part of the Key Largo experience. In this article, we celebrate the bond between humans and animals by exploring the array of animal services available in our area, each dedicated to the well-being of our beloved four-legged friends.
At the forefront of our pet-friendly community stands
the Humane Animal Care Coalition, the County Animal Shelter, a beacon of hope for animals in need. Located at the north end of Key Largo, they welcome visitors, inviting them to embark on a journey of compassion and companionship. Here, prospective pet parents can meet a diverse array of furry residents, each with their own unique story and personality. From playful puppies to wise old souls, the shelter offers a second chance at happiness for animals of all shapes and sizes. By providing a safe haven for homeless pets and facilitating adoptions to loving homes, the Humane Animal Care Coalition
embodies the spirit of empathy and kindness that defines our community.
In addition to the county shelter, Key Largo is also home to a dedicated network of pet rescues, each committed to making a difference in the lives of animals. One such organization is MarrVelous Pet Rescues, a grassroots initiative fueled by the passion and dedication of its small staff, board members, and volunteers. Unlike traditional shelters, this rescue operates on a foster-based model, providing temporary homes for animals in need until they find their forever families. Through a combination of
outreach programs, including spay/neuter and microchip clinics, adoption events, and community partnerships, MarrVelous Pet Rescues strives to create a world where every pet has a loving home to call their own.
But our love for animals extends beyond the realm of domestic pets, reaching even the wildest corners of our imagination. Just a bit off the beaten path in Key Largo lies the Pawsitive Beginnings Fox Rescue, a sanctuary dedicated to providing a safe and happy home to foxes that have been saved from fur farms. Through education and advocacy efforts, Pawsitive Beginnings seeks to raise awareness about the continued existence of fur farms and the killing of defenseless animals for their fur. They also offer unique animal-assisted therapy programs, using the inspiring stories of the foxes, who are true survivors, to
provide hope and healing and serve as living examples of resilience.
Of course, no discussion of animal services in Key Largo would be complete without mentioning the unsung heroes of our furry companions’ health and well-being: our local veterinarians. From routine check-ups to emergency care, Island Hammock Pet Hospital works tirelessly to ensure that our pets receive the best possible medical attention. Whether it’s a wagging tail or a contented purr, the gratitude of our beloved animals serves as a testament to the invaluable role that these veterinarians play in our lives.
Key Largo is also fortunate to house a local, family owned pet store, Keys Kritters, where you can find all the supplies and resources for pets from dogs to reptiles!
As residents and visitors alike, we are fortunate to live in a community that values the bond
Empower your future—protect what matters most. With tailored insurance solutions, we’ve got you covered every step of the way. Because your peace of mind is PRICELESS.
— Mary Houston, President & Owner
between humans and animals. Whether we’re exploring the depths of the ocean or basking in the warmth of the sun, our furry companions are always by our side, enriching our lives in ways we never thought possible. So let us continue to cherish and celebrate the animals that bring joy, laughter, and unconditional love into our hearts, for they truly are the soul of Key Largo.

The Florida Keys are a chain of limestone islands that extend from the southern tip of the Florida mainland southwest to the Dry Tortugas, a distance of approximately 220 miles. They are island remnants of ancient coral reefs (Upper Keys) and sand bars (Lower Keys) that flourished during a period of higher sea levels approximately 125,000 years ago (a period of geologic time known as the Pleistocene Epoch).
During the last ice age (100,000 years ago) sea level dropped, exposing the ancient coral reefs and sand bars which became fossilized over time to

form the rock that makes up the island chain today. The two dominate rock formations in the Keys are Key Largo Limestone and Miami Oolite.
During this time of lower sea levels, the Florida land mass was much larger than it is today and the area now referred to as Florida Bay was forested. As glaciers and polar ice caps started melting 15,000 years ago, flooding of land combined with tidal influence changed the geography of the Keys and their surrounding areas.

Imagine waking up on the day of your long-awaited vacation with pure excitement and joy. You jump out of bed enthusiastically, eager to start your adventure; pack your bags, load the car, and head to the airport. As you board the plane and take off towards your destination, you and your companions are all bubbling with anticipation. After a few hours, you land, retrieve your baggage, and pick up your rental car. You set off towards the vacation rental that you found online, feeling thrilled to finally arrive at your destination. However, as you arrive at the rental home after a long journey, you discover with great disappointment that you have nowhere to stay.
In recent years, vacation rentals have gained immense popularity as they provide a comfortable and homely environment and offer exceptional value over traditional vacation accommodations. However, before you decide to rent a vacation rental, you should consider a few crucial factors.
You must know the local licensing and rental restrictions affecting your stay to avoid legal issues or unpleasant surprises during your vacation.
Monroe County has distinct minimum-stay restrictions, license requirements, and laws about vacation rentals. To enforce these regulations, every area has a code enforcement division with a dedicated team to investigate any suspected illegal rental activity. This could be due to a neighbor’s complaint or if the enforcement agents find the property advertised on popular vacation rental websites like VRBO, Home Away, or Craigslist. Suppose an enforcement agent determines that an illegal rental activity is occurring. In that case, the vacationer who unwittingly booked the property becomes a party to this unlawful activity and risks ruining their vacation.
Homeowners and management companies must comply with local rental regulations and collect state sales tax and local bed tax from vacationers. If you plan to rent a vacation property, verifying
that these taxes are being charged and mentioned in the rental agreement is advisable. If a rental property is advertised without explicitly mentioning these taxes, it is a sign that the property may be rented out illegally.
It is recommended to ask questions before renting a private home for less than 28 nights, as such properties require a unique vacation rental number depending on the community. Homeowners operating legally should provide the name and number of the appropriate governing agency to verify the number’s legitimacy. Acquiring the license is expensive and time-consuming, so legitimate homeowners will be happy to provide their number. If homeowners refuse to give the number, it may be advisable to reconsider renting from them.
When renting vacation homes in gated communities, it’s important to note that not all meet the minimum stay requirement. However, they still have other legal requirements that must be met. To protect
your vacation investment, we highly recommend renting through a reputable and locally operated rental agency. These agencies are well-versed in each area’s licensing, tax laws, and minimum-stay restrictions. Moreover, they hold specific vacation rental and tax licenses, so you won’t have to worry about unpleasant surprises during your vacation.

Journey Through Key Largo and the Fabulous Florida Keys
Start your adventure in paradise at the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce & Florida Keys Visitor Center at Mile Marker 106. It’s your go-to resource for insider tips, top attractions, and local secrets that will help you make the most of your time in Key Largo and beyond.
As the northernmost island in the chain, Key Largo is your gateway to the Florida Keys—and it’s a dream destination for nature lovers and underwater explorers. Known as the Diving Capital of the World, it offers world-class snorkeling and scuba diving, vibrant coral reefs, and iconic sites like the Spiegel Grove wreck and the Christ of the Deep statue.
Above the surface, adventure awaits in the lush mangrove forests, eco-tours, and parks like John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, where you can kayak, paddleboard, fish, or explore a 30,000-gallon aquarium. Prefer to stay dry? Cruise the reefs aboard the Key Largo Princess glass-bottom boat for a window into the colorful world beneath the waves.
Key Largo’s charm is in its variety. Hike through Dagny Johnson Hammock Botanical State Park, unwind at Rowell’s Waterfront Park, swim with dolphins,
or even ride the historic African Queen. Whether you’re after a tiki cruise, backcountry fishing, or a DIY boat day, the adventures are endless.
Heading south, cross Tavernier Creek Bridge into the next chapter of the Keys. Once a fishing village, Tavernier is now a quaint stop on the way to Islamorada. Tavernier is home to several restaurants and including a taste of southern Italy on the creek and a new brewery. A little farther down, you’ll spot Betsy the Lobster, a 30-foot roadside icon and Instagram favorite. Next, you’ll find Islamorada, the sportfishing capital of the world.
Islamorada blends laid-back luxury with culture and outdoor fun—perfect for beach days, shopping, museums, and brewery hopping. Don’t miss the Theater of the Sea, where you can meet dolphins, sea lions, and more. Dive deeper into the History of Diving Museum and experience 4,000 years of the quest to explore under the sea. View fascinating exhibits at the Florida Keys History and Discovery Center, where you’ll uncover the story behind Henry Flagler’s visionary Overseas Railroad. Then it’s on to Robbie’s Marina at MM 78—home of the famous tarpon feeding—and Anne’s Beach
at MM 74, a serene spot for a coastal stroll or swim.
Next stop: Marathon, the heart of the Keys. Visit the Dolphin Research Center and Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters, where hands-on marine experiences await. Cross the breathtaking Seven Mile Bridge which is a marvel of engineering and scenic beauty and runs alongside the original Flagler railroad bridge. You can visit Pigeon Key, at mile marker 45, which played a significant role in constructing the East Coast railroad and now serves as a museum.
Outdoor lovers won’t want to miss Bahia Honda State Park, famous for its crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and postcard-perfect sunsets. In the Lower Keys, keep an eye out for the endangered Key Deer around Big Pine Key. Drive carefully, especially at dusk.
Finally, your journey takes you to Key West. This quirky island at the end of the road is bursting with charm—from the bars and galleries along Duval Street, to Mallory Square’s nightly Sunset Celebration, where local performers, music, and fresh conch fritters create a magical end to the day. Be sure to snap a photo at the iconic
Southernmost Point Buoy, just 90 miles from Cuba.
Whether you’re diving into the deep, cruising at sunset, or simply relaxing on the beach, Key Largo and the Florida Keys offer unforgettable experiences at every turn. Start your journey at the Key Largo Chamber Visitor Center and let your island escape begin.
