Marine Menagerie Amongst Mangroves Theater of the Sea:
ADVERTORIAL
Where can a family spend a full day interacting with dolphins, sea lions, sharks, and rays, enjoy a few hours relaxing on the beach, and go on a bottomless boat ride?
Located halfway between Miami and Key West, Theater of the Sea has been welcoming visitors to the Florida Keys since 1946. This family-owned business has committed to providing a wonderful home for many rescued animals, including endangered sea turtles, sea lions, crocodilians, and parrots while educating the public via live shows and up-close animal interactions. Many of the rescued animals require specialized, long-term care and treatment, all of which is funded by patronage alone. Upon approaching the park visitors will notice the beautiful fountains, giant conch shell, and award-winning landscaping. After purchasing their tickets, visitors leave the chaos and havoc of their daily lives and
step into a world filled with beautiful green foliage, clearly paved paths, and an amazing menagerie of animals. Not only is all this a visual treat for visitors but the greenery and three-acre natural lagoons provide valuable enrichment for the animals as well!
Guests can expect to spend 2-3 hours exploring the park while getting an intimate feel of a variety of species native to the Florida Keys. There is always something exciting going on as the as the show schedule is continuous, ensuring that you won’t have to choose one over the other. Unique to Theater of the Sea is their famous dolphin show, a stunning showcase of acrobatics and water work. As they stroll the property, guests will also have opportunities to watch a sea lion show, parrot show, learn about sea turtles, sting rays and sharks, and observe a crocodilian training session.
Children and adults of
all ages will have ample opportunities to interact with the animals during their visit. Dolphin lovers will delight in the dolphin swim while snorkeling beside them. Included in this experience are dorsal tows, hugs, and kisses. Those a little less daring can do the shallow water dolphin swim, which entails interacting with the dolphins while standing in three to four feet of water. Want to join the fun but don’t want to get wet? Even land lovers can interact with the dolphins and get a few kisses too in the “Meet the Dolphin” program. Many encounters are also available with sea lions, nurse sharks, sea turtles, sting rays, crocodilians, and parrots!
After a stroll around the park, visitors can enjoy a quick bite to eat at Papa’s Grill then relax at the lagoon-side beach.
As a timeless tradition
of the Florida Keys, Theater of the Sea is something you will not want to miss. For more information or to make reservations, go to theaterofthesea.com, or call 305-664-2431.

Booking Vacation Rentals Online? Avoid Disasters!
Imagine waking up on the day of your long-awaited vacation with pure excitement and joy. You jump out of bed enthusiastically, eager to start your adventure; pack your bags, load the car, and head to the airport. As you board the plane and take off towards your destination, you and your companions are all bubbling with anticipation. After a few hours, you land, retrieve your baggage, and pick up your rental car. You set off towards the vacation rental that you found online, feeling thrilled to finally arrive at your destination. However, as you arrive at the rental home after a long journey, you discover with great disappointment that you have nowhere to stay.
In recent years, vacation rentals have gained immense popularity as they provide a comfortable and homely environment and offer exceptional value over traditional vacation accommodations. However, before you decide to rent a vacation rental, you should consider a few crucial factors.
You must know the local licensing and rental restrictions affecting your stay to avoid legal issues or unpleasant surprises during your vacation.
Monroe County has distinct minimum-stay restrictions, license requirements, and laws about vacation rentals. To enforce these regulations, every area has a code enforcement division with a dedicated team to investigate any suspected illegal rental activity. This could be due to a neighbor’s complaint or if the enforcement agents find the property advertised on popular vacation rental websites like VRBO, Home Away, or Craigslist. Suppose an enforcement agent determines that an illegal rental activity is occurring. In that case, the vacationer who unwittingly booked the property becomes a party to this unlawful activity and risks ruining their vacation.
Homeowners and management companies must comply with local rental regulations and collect state sales tax and local bed tax from vacationers. If you plan to rent a vacation property, verifying
that these taxes are being charged and mentioned in the rental agreement is advisable. If a rental property is advertised without explicitly mentioning these taxes, it is a sign that the property may be rented out illegally.
It is recommended to ask questions before renting a private home for less than 28 nights, as such properties require a unique vacation rental number depending on the community. Homeowners operating legally should provide the name and number of the appropriate governing agency to verify the number’s legitimacy. Acquiring the license is expensive and time-consuming, so legitimate homeowners will be happy to provide their number. If homeowners refuse to give the number, it may be advisable to reconsider renting from them.
When renting vacation homes in gated communities, it’s important to note that not all meet the minimum stay requirement. However, they still have other legal requirements that must be met. To protect
your vacation investment, we highly recommend renting through a reputable and locally operated rental agency. These agencies are well-versed in each area’s licensing, tax laws, and minimum-stay restrictions. Moreover, they hold specific vacation rental and tax licenses, so you won’t have to worry about unpleasant surprises during your vacation.
If you’re planning a trip to Key Largo and need business recommendations, the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce is here to assist you. We suggest checking out Barefeet Rentals, Florida Keys Rental Store, and Freewheeler Vacations for your accommodation needs. Additionally, in the Guide, you can find a comprehensive list of “Places to Stay” that we highly recommend you browse to find the perfect spot for your vacation. We strive to make your visit to Key Largo as enjoyable and smooth as possible, so feel free to contact us for any assistance you may need.
Safe travels and enjoy all that Key Largo and the Florida Keys.

Help Protect Our Coral Reefs
Here are tips on how you can help protect our valuable coral reefs:
• Support organizations like Coral Restoration Foundation and REEF; they both work to protect coral reefs. In your area find other groups and volunteer to keep the oceans, rivers, lakes or other waters in your area clean. Clean water is important everywhere. All watersheds affect the oceans and eventually, the coral reefs.
• Safeguard our coral during diving and snorkeling by wearing sunscreen that does not contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. These chemicals may harm the reefs.
• Also, don’t touch, stand, or anchor your boat on the reef.
• Organize a beach clean-up.
• Conserve water – using less water, means less runoff and wastewater that resolve in polluting our oceans.
• Use only environmental safe or organic fertilizers. All chemicals and pollutants eventually flow into our oceans.
• Learn more about the vital importance of coral reefs.
• Get your family, friends and community involved…

Key Largo Cuisine
While you’re here, make sure you treat your taste buds to the unusual tastes of Keys cuisine.
Stone Crab: Pictured above, Florida stone crab seasons runs from mid-October to the end of May. For the principled eaters out there, stone crab is considered a renewable food source. Crab claws are harvested and then the crab is returned to the ocean so the claws can regenerate. The claw meat is flaky and white, with a sweet taste. Best served cold, with a sharp-tasting mustard sauce.
Conch: Conch meat tastes like an exotic kind of clam. Though native conch (a large marine snail) is no longer served in the Keys due to overharvesting in the past, imported conch provides the meat for crunchy fritters, “cracked” conch (pounded conch meat breaded and fried), spicy conch chowder or raw, marinated served in salads.
Dolphin: Don’t worry, that’s not Flipper you’re about to sink your teeth into! This firm, white-fleshed, delicious fish really is a fish, and not to be confused with the mammal of TV fame. It’s delicious grilled, Cajun-style or blackened.
Florida Lobster: In season, August 6 – March 31, Florida lobster has no claws like the Maine variety, and is often referred to as the “spiny lobster”. Florida lobster can be broiled and served with lots of melted butter, but there are a lot of recipies out there.
Key Lime Pie: This delicious dessert originated in Key West. But don’t be fooled by bright green concoctions – real key lime pie is yellow.
Key West Pink Shrimp: Very popular here in the Keys and the best shrimp to eat (not farm raised). These sweet shellfish are impeccable when steamed and served with cocktail sauce, sautéed, battered and fried, on top of a bed of greens or pasta.
Hogfish: One of the best fish you will ever eat. Hogfish is mild with a light texture, and a scallop-like flavor. Hogfish is delicious fried, blackened, broiled or baked. Try it with a panko macadamia crust, topped with a tropical fruit salsa… Yum!
A Taste of Little Italy in the Florida Keys
ADVERTORIAL
Local Keys residents Tony and Isis Wright started building Italian Food Company four years ago with a hopeful idea. Their pandemic origins seem like an unlikely venture with no prior restaurant experience and the state of the service industry in flux. Fast-forward to 2024, and they now have three locations, a loyal following, Italian chefs and top-grade pizza makers, and a new waterside concept slated to open in the coming months.
Italian Food Company Key Largo was the first to open in 2021 and is a testament to their attention to detail and passion for food. Both grew up in a culture of generous hospitality and the comfort of homecooked food, with large extended family gatherings and the spirit of shared meals ingrained in their upbringings. The couple leaned heavily on Tony’s Italian family and culture, the son of an American Military veteran and Sicilian mother with a deep repository of authentic recipes. The Key Largo restaurant opened with authentic Neapolitan pizzas and many treasured recipes shared by Tony’s mother, Maria. “Dishes like eggplant parmigiana, lasagna, and especially the polpette al sugo (meatballs) were weekend favorites in our family and are now staples at Italian Food Company,” Isis explains. Maria, who lives a few miles from the restaurant, hand rolls the meatballs every Tuesday, Isis says. It’s a labor of love, she details, and the job of meatballs, fresh sauces, soups, and baked pasta is always under the watchful eye of Maria and the
entire family.
Six months after opening their flagship Key Largo location, serendipity and a wave of community support emboldened the Wrights to invest their talents and love of everything Italy in the neighboring Village of Islamorada. There were a few more Italians in town, with the Wrights wooing native Italian Chef Raffaele and tenured Italian servers from Miami to take a chance on the concept of Italian Food Company. “There is a sensory and emotional experience that happens when you travel to Italy,” Isis describes. “Artisans and trades are very much alive in Italy with handpainted ceramics, beautiful landscapes and architecture, a true farm-to-table experience with fresh ingredients, and the laughter and chatter of Italians enjoying life,” she adds. The Wrights took a page from the scenic town of Taormina, Italy, and imported all the essentials to re-create Authentic Italy. The town Mayor of Taormina may give the Wrights a Key to their city, with local Artisan Franco being the chief exporter of all their intricate hand-painted lava tables. Their tables, hand-painted murals, imported products, family recipes, and native Italian staff make for a truly Italian experience without a passport. Islamorada made its mark on the dining scene, bringing an extensive menu of seafood appetizers, meat and fish entrees, pastas, and daily specials.
Italy’s food culture has regional nuances, and they found an opportunity to highlight
Roman-style pizzas, sandwiches, and other delights with their third location in Tavernier, Italian Food Company Express. One aspect of Italian Food Company that the owners are most proud of is their appeal to large demographic and generational families. “We have so many groups and families share their special moments with us; it’s very inspiring,” Isis mentions. In Italy, restaurants and neighborhood eateries are where people go to connect, talk, and share stories. “Everyone feels at home at our restaurants, and it is not uncommon for our guests to share selfies and a hug with one of our staff before leaving,” Isis adds. Their third location was previously home to beloved Chad’s Deli, and the Wrights have picked up where the late Chad Gardener left off, offering locals and visitors alike a second home with fresh, flavorful meals served with a bit of Italian love.
Word travels fast in Italy, with Italian tourists stopping at one of the Italian Food Company locations before heading south to Key West. We caught a couple asking the owner, Tony, “Parla Italiano?” in their Tavernier location, to which they chatted and laughed while Tony recommended an assortment of appetizers and entrees. The local chapter of the Sons and
Daughters of Italy makes their weekly rounds at Italian Food Company, and it seems, indeed, a burgeoning community of Keys Italians is taking root and adding a bountiful breadth of flavors and cultural beauty to the Island chain of the Florida Keys.
In their unintentional journey as restauranteurs, the Wrights are making another big splash, readying another concept for the summer of 2024. That’s when they aim to open Lido 73, a restaurant/snack cafe modeled on a favorite beach club from Taormina, Sicily, with grilled meats and fish, sandwiches, and flatbreads, and a “fun atmosphere.”
The new addition will also be in Islamorada, in a waterside location off Tavernier Creek and accessible by boat or land.” We have many memories of the Mazzaro beach club in Taormina with our family and friends. It is a dream that we’ll be able to share bits and pieces of the things that have filled our hearts with our community and visiting guests. “ Isis concludes.
For information on Italian Food Company, visit their website at www.italianfoodcompany.com. Make sure to follow them on Instagram @theitalianfoodcompany for updates on IFC and Lido 73.
Places to Dine
Whether you’re famished after a day of island activities or fueling up for a fun filled itinerary, Key Largo’s eateries serve up fine and varied fare. Of course, you can’t leave the Keys without having fresh fish at an exceptional area fish house. Snapper, Mahi-mahi, Grouper and Tuna are among the area’s fresh-caught specialties.
This is your chance to try a warm, fresh conch fritter. And to top it all off, nothing but key lime pie will do. Most dining establishments in Key Largo double as entertainment venues, so be sure to linger over cocktails to listen to the sounds of the island. Dancing the night away is part of the island experience!
Paws and Claws: Embracing Key Largo’s Four-Legged Residents
WRITTEN BY SUZI YOUNGBERG
Nestled in the heart of Key Largo, amid the tranquil beauty of our coastal paradise, lies a community that cherishes its furry companions just as much as its breathtaking vistas. From the loyal dogs that accompany us on sunset strolls to the curious cats that share our homes, pets are an integral part of the Key Largo experience. In this article, we celebrate the bond between humans and animals by exploring the array of animal services available in our area, each dedicated to the well-being of our beloved four-legged friends.
At the forefront of our pet-friendly community stands
the Humane Animal Care Coalition, the County Animal Shelter, a beacon of hope for animals in need. Located at the north end of Key Largo, they welcome visitors, inviting them to embark on a journey of compassion and companionship. Here, prospective pet parents can meet a diverse array of furry residents, each with their own unique story and personality. From playful puppies to wise old souls, the shelter offers a second chance at happiness for animals of all shapes and sizes. By providing a safe haven for homeless pets and facilitating adoptions to loving homes, the Humane Animal Care Coalition
embodies the spirit of empathy and kindness that defines our community.
In addition to the county shelter, Key Largo is also home to a dedicated network of pet rescues, each committed to making a difference in the lives of animals. One such organization is MarrVelous Pet Rescues, a grassroots initiative fueled by the passion and dedication of its small staff, board members, and volunteers. Unlike traditional shelters, this rescue operates on a foster-based model, providing temporary homes for animals in need until they find their forever families. Through a combination of
outreach programs, adoption events, and community partnerships, MarrVelous Pet Rescues strives to create a world where every pet has a loving home to call their own.
But our love for animals extends beyond the realm of domestic pets, reaching even the wildest corners of our imagination. Just a bit off the beaten path in Key Largo lies the Pawsitive Beginnings Fox Rescue, a sanctuary dedicated to providing a safe and happy home to foxes that have been saved from fur farms. They work closely with organizations in parts of the country where fur farming takes place and help provide or find permanent placement for the endangered foxes. Through education and advocacy efforts, Pawsitive Beginnings seeks to raise awareness about the continued existence of fur farms and the killing of defenseless animals for their fur.

Of course, no discussion of animal services in Key Largo would be complete without mentioning the unsung heroes of our furry companions’ health and well-being: our local veterinarians. From routine check-ups to emergency care, Island Hammock Pet Hospital and Mobile Pet Doctors work tirelessly to ensure that our pets receive the best possible medical attention. Whether it’s a wagging tail or a contented purr, the gratitude of our beloved animals serves as a testament to the invaluable role that these veterinarians play in our lives.
Key Largo is also fortunate to house a local, family owned pet store, Keys Kritters, where you can find all the supplies and resources for pets from dogs to reptiles!
As residents and visitors alike, we are fortunate to live in a community that values the bond between humans and animals. Whether we’re exploring the

What are the Florida Keys Made From?
Limestone!
The Florida Keys are a chain of limestone islands that extend from the southern tip of the Florida mainland southwest to the Dry Tortugas, a distance of approximately 220 miles. They are island remnants of ancient coral reefs (Upper Keys) and sand bars (Lower Keys) that flourished during a period of higher sea levels approximately 125,000 years ago (a period of geologic time known as the Pleistocene Epoch).
During the last ice age (100,000 years ago) sea level dropped, exposing the ancient coral reefs and sand bars which became fossilized over time to
form the rock that makes up the island chain today. The two dominate rock formations in the Keys are Key Largo Limestone and Miami Oolite.
During this time of lower sea levels, the Florida land mass was much larger than it is today and the area now referred to as Florida Bay was forested. As glaciers and polar ice caps started melting 15,000 years ago, flooding of land combined with tidal influence changed the geography of the Keys and their surrounding areas.

Key Largo Everglades National Park
The park encompasses the freshwater wetlands at the southern tip of the Florida peninsula and the shallow waters of Florida Bay. Visitors enjoy a view of Everglades National Park on the west side of the Florida Keys Scenic Highway (US highway1) in the vicinity of mile marker 110. Here, where freshwater from the Everglades wetlands mixes with the marine waters of the Florida Keys, mangrove forests line shorelines and form islands. Guided boat tours into Florida Bay are available through the Key Largo Chamber at 305-451-1414 or www.keylargochamber.org
John
Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
The renown attraction is 70-square-nautical-miles of coral reefs, mangrove islands, and shallow waters. The park’s land base is located at mile marker 102.5 on the ocean side of the Florida Keys Scenic Highway. Glass-bottom boat/ dive/snorkel tours are available from the Park’s concessionaire and local operators in Key

The park includes the largest contiguous tract of West Indian Mahogany tropical hardwood hammock in the U.S. and offers approximately 6 miles of trails to explore. Some park trails are paved, making them accessible to bicyclists and wheelchairs. To reach the park’s entrance, travel north on County Road 905, one-half mile beyond the intersection of CR905 and the scenic highway (US 1) at mm 106.5. For more information, call the park office at 305-451-1202 or visit www.floridastateparks.org/ park/Key-Largo-Hammock. (Entrance fee required.)
Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge
Located in North Key Largo, the
refuge protects approximately 6700 acres of tropical hardwood hammock, mangrove forest, salt marsh and shallow open waters. Refuge habitats support several threatened and endangered species, including the American crocodile, Key Largo woodrat, and the Schaus’ swallowtail butterfly. Although the refuge is closed to the public, a public visitor station with a butterfly garden is located at its headquarters on County Road 905, 1.8 miles north of the intersection of the scenic highway at mm 106.5 and CR 905. Visit www.fws.gov/ nationalkeydeer/crocodilelake for more information.
Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
The sanctuary protects 2900 square nautical miles of marine waters surrounding the Florida Keys island chain. Designated by Congress and administered by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and is jointly managed with the State of Florida. The sanctuary protects an extensive coral reef ecosystem and a variety of historic shipwrecks
and other archaeological resources. Views of sanctuary waters can be seen from bridges and overlooks throughout the entire length of the Florida Keys Scenic Highway from Manatee Bay at mile marker 108 to mile marker 1 in Key West. The sanctuary’s main office and the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center are located at the Dr. Nancy Foster Florida Keys Environmental Complex in Key West. For more information, visit floridakeys.noaa.gov or call 305-809-4700.
Dry Tortugas National Park
Located in the Gulf of Mexico about 70 miles west off Key West, the park consists of a cluster of seven islands and surrounding shallow corals reefs, sandy shoals and seagrass beds. Fort Jefferson, a civil war brick fort, and the park’s visitor center are located on Garden Key. The 100-square mile park is accessible only by boat or seaplane through concession operators. Journey Through Key Largo and the Fabulous Florida Keys
BY ELIZABETH MOSCYNSKI AND MICHAEL KANE
To embark on your adventure in the beautiful paradise of Key Largo, you can start by visiting the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center at mile marker 106. You can gather all the information and insider tips about mesmerizing Key Largo and the Florida Keys. The center offers an in-depth overview of the top attractions, hidden gems, and local culture, ensuring an unforgettable experience.
Key Largo, positioned at the northernmost point of the Florida Keys, is a stunning destination that offers a variety of exciting experiences. You can explore the wonders of nature through pristine eco-tours, diverse wildlife, and incredible mangrove forests. Key Largo’s crystal-clear waters also make it an ideal location for underwater adventures such as snorkeling and scuba diving, where you can witness a kaleidoscope of colorful marine life.
Key Largo is a magnificent destination for nature lovers and adventurers. It is known as the “Diving Capital of the World” and offers breathtaking diving and snorkeling sites, vibrant coral reefs, and a wide variety of marine life. You can also discover hidden gems like the Spiegel Grove artificial reef and
the Christ of the Deep statue.
John Pennekamp State Park offers canoeing, kayaking, fishing, short trails, picnicking, and swimming at the beach. The park’s visitor center features a 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium and a theater showing nature videos. The park offers a variety of campsites, ensuring a comfortable stay. Free beach wheelchairs are available for those with mobility needs. You can also stay connected with free 24-hour WI-FI at the Coral Reef Park Company Concession Building and Dive Shop. We recommend booking your explorations early as reservations fill up fast.
For those looking for a tranquil tour of the coral reefs without submerging themselves in the water, hop aboard the M. V. Key Largo Princess for a cruise through the waters of the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park to view the exciting, beautiful underwater world of the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary.
Key Largo has something for everyone. Relax on the beach, explore nature at Dagny Johnson Hammock Botanical State Park, or enjoy family fun at Rowell’s Waterfront Park. Movie lovers can cruise on the African Queen, while adventure-seekers can swim with dolphins or take backcountry nature
tours. Whether you are looking for a Tiki cruise or group fishing, a private or group charter, or even renting a boat to adventure on your own, Key Largo has much to offer.
The next set of keys starts at mile marker 90 upon crossing Tavernier Creek Bridge. Tavernier was initially a fishing village and railroad town, and it was given its official name in 1911 after the construction of a post office. Islamorada is a part of the Florida Keys archipelago, known for its sports fishing and unique shops. It has many attractions like beaches, museums, breweries, art galleries, and a family marine mammal park.
Visit three places in Islamorada for an unforgettable experience. Theater of the Sea, the world’s oldest family-owned marine mammal park, offers interactions with dolphins, seals, turtles, parrots, and reptiles. The History of Diving Museum showcases a 400-year collection of diving equipment. Lastly, the History and Discovery Center has fascinating exhibits, including a scrolling movie theater that tells the story of Henry Flagler and the railroad that laid the foundation for the Overseas Highway.
Continuing your journey, between mile markers 87 and 86 lies Betsy, a sculpted
lobster. At 30 feet tall and 40 feet long, she has become the second most photographed icon in the Florida Keys, following the southernmost public point buoy in Key West.
Driving to the Middle and Lower Keys, you will discover Robbie’s Marina of Islamorada at MM 78. It’s famous for tarpon feeding! At mile marker 74, you will find Anne’s Beach, a natural beach open to the public. While driving along the coast, you can enjoy the beautiful views. You can swim or fish in the clear waters and observe marine life from the secondary fishing bridges.
Grassy Key is the starting point of Marathon City, named after the marathon-like completion of the railroad. While in Marathon, visit the Dolphin Research Center at MM 59 and the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters for an exciting dive among marine creatures.
The Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon offers stunning views, including a look at the original Flagler Railroad Bridge, which has an innovative honeycomb building system. Pigeon Key, at mile marker 45, played a significant role in constructing the East Coast Railroad and now serves as a museum.
Bahia Honda State Park is a stunning
destination in the Florida Keys. It has three beautiful beaches, camping, hiking, birdwatching, and shell collecting. The park is famous for its breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.
The Lower Keys of Florida are home to Big Pine Key, a wildlife sanctuary dedicated to the endangered Key Deer Species. With only a population of just over 700, these deer can be spotted all over the island, but caution is advised when encountering them. It’s a scenic drive from there to Key West.
Key West is a unique place with museums, galleries, and shops. Duval Street has around 67 bars and restaurants, making it the highest-density street in the country. The Southernmost Point Buoy, located at South Street and Whitehead Street, is a famous spot to take pictures. For a beautiful sunset view, head to Mallory Square in historic Old Town and enjoy the Sunset Celebration held every evening with live performances, local music, and delicious food.
