CHAIR’S REPORT
For a year that historians will hallmark for tumult and dislocation, 2025 was, for the Shaw Festival, one of steady realization of plans, advancement of the company’s strategic vision, and pragmatic adaptation to a new order for live performing arts in North America.
The quality of the performances on stage reflected The Shaw’s unflagging commitment to maintaining or elevating standards in production values and ideas that audiences rightly expect – this despite the well-documented financial challenges that must be surmounted by a rapidly dwindling and beleaguered number of active theatre companies in the land.
The critical acclaim and enthusiastic response of the audiences to our 2025 season provides all the members of the company and all the various Boards at The Shaw with the inspiration to grow the company and to realize its strategic vision to best serve our loyal supporters in Canada and the US.
We intend to intensify our long and deep connection with Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Niagara Region through the conscientious advancement of our key projects: the soon to be completed Shaw Artists’ Village; and the construction of the new Royal George Theatre scheduled to open in late 2028.
Not one of our productions, plans, or accomplishments at The Shaw would be possible without the ardent support of you, the patrons of The Shaw. Your generosity and often beautifully articulated support of the aims and spirit of The Shaw form as vital a part of the lifeblood of the company as does the output of its artists, artisans, craftspeople, and administrators whose career work it is.
I and the members of all our Boards are proud of the diversity and reach of the company. From the central defining art to the volunteer outreach programmes that engage communities, students, the aged and infirm, and those whose mental health is in jeopardy –this is all The Shaw Festival.
I thank our indefatigable Board of Directors, our diligent staff, and our visionary Executive and Artistic Directors Tim Jennings, Tim Carroll, Kimberley Rampersad, and Melissa Novecosky for a year of admirable accomplishment in the face of constant challenge.
I also thank the Shaw Guild for the dedication of its members; the attentive Board of Governors; the committed Shaw Festival Foundation (USA) Board; and the wise Board of the Shaw Endowment Foundation.
Most importantly, profound thanks to each and every one of you, our supporters, for your presence, your passion, and your loyalty.
I look forward to welcoming you with your family and friends at The Shaw as often as you will for our intriguing 2026 season in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and in Toronto for our exciting premiere season at Harbourfront.

EXECUTIVE TEAM’S REPORT
Foundation For Growth
All transformation requires a solid foundation – and 2025 was the year we laid ours.
In twelve short months, alongside a successful season of ambitious and joyful productions, we secured, designed, and began construction on the Shaw Artists’ Village, quite literally building the spaces that will house future learning, creativity, and connection. We laid the groundwork for the new Royal George Theatre by securing historic provincial funding, completing extensive design and planning work, and preparing the site for what comes next. And with the public launch of All. Together. Now., we positioned ourselves to grow, deliver and fully activate the vision and promise of this Campaign in the years ahead.
At the same time, the 2025 season showcased remarkable artistic achievement – from musical triumphs and hilarious comedies to sharp dramas and a fresh reimagining of a Shaw satire. Artistic excellence remained at the core of our work, upheld by the dedication and talent of our artists, crew, and craftspeople. Across the Festival, Royal George, and Studio stages, we delivered extraordinary productions, while the final season at the Spiegeltent offered sold-out performances and immersive experiences that celebrated theatre as a shared, live encounter.
Artist training and development continued to be an essential part of the Shaw’s artistic life, extending beyond the acting ensemble to ensure that the foundations of craft, curiosity, and learning remained strong across the company.
This was a landmark year for the Royal George Theatre. As we prepared to close a building that has stood for more than 110 years, we took the time to reflect on its extraordinary history – from vaudeville, silent and talking films, and mime, to more than 12,000 performances of 180 Shaw Festival productions. From podcast specials and written tributes to final SNAGs and farewell events, we have honoured this jewel-box theatre and marked the end of one chapter, even as we laid the groundwork for the next.
Every foundation needs a cornerstone. Ours came in two parts: a historic $35 million investment from the Province of Ontario, and a lead Campaign gift from Frances and Tim Price. Together, these commitments allowed us to move forward in confidence with the foundational design and planning work for the new Royal George Theatre, positioning it to become the first carbon-neutral and fully accessible performing arts venue in North America.

2025 was also the year where we not only secured the new Shaw Artists’ Village site but completed the design and executed Phase One of construction – all in less than twelve months. The full campus will open in spring 2026, but thanks to the generosity of the James A. Burton and Family Foundation we were able to announce the name and purpose of the central building in the Village. The Burton Centre for Lifelong Creativity will become the heart of lifelong learning and creative participation at The Shaw.
Creating new spaces for Real Human Connection requires effort across every department. This year, our staff undertook an extraordinary amount of planning and logistical work, advancing two major capital projects at once. We are grateful for the efforts of our partners at Unity Design Studio, led by Meika McCunn and Michael Gallant, and Govan Brown, our construction manager, without whom none of this would have been possible.
As the physical foundations of All. Together. Now. were laid, so too were the programmatic ones. Our Education, Engagement, and Outreach team launched many new strategic partnerships, piloting programs focused on communication, creativity, and positive aging. With over 5,000 such encounters and experiences now offered each year, we can already see how our new spaces will support this growing and ever deepening engagement with our audiences and communities.
It is also important to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. We have undertaken this Campaign and all that comes with it at a very challenging moment for the performing arts sector. Structural problems within our industry led more than 60% of performing arts organizations in North America to project deficits for last year, many at levels that threaten their long-term sustainability. Costs have nearly doubled since the pandemic, while our ability to increase ticket prices, without compromising accessibility, remains limited. Like many of our peers, we have not been immune to these challenges.
For the Shaw, this has meant we have needed you, our community, more than ever.
We can only achieve this transformation together. What 2025 has shown is that when challenges arise, so does our community: donors, Board, strategic partners, patrons, artists, and incredible staff. As we look back on 2025, it is because of their commitment, belief and collective endeavour that we have been able – together – to lay the foundations for the next 50 years or more of this organization, while continuing to produce world class art that attracted more than 350,000 people from around the world.

IAN WALDRON & TIM REDMAN, TORONTO, ON
We extend particular thanks to our remarkable Board for the extraordinary support this year. Your energy, expertise, and confidence in the vision has made this year possible. To the Shaw Endowment Board, we thank you for your significant contribution this season.
Finally, to our staff and artists, who continue to make the impossible possible, we offer our deepest thanks. Your investment in All. Together. Now. continues to inspire us.
Looking ahead, 2026 will be a year of building on what has been put in place. We will open the Shaw Artists’ Village. Construction will begin on the new Royal George Theatre. Education and engagement programs will expand, and exceptional art will continue to fill our stages. The exhilarating and sometimes painful process of transformation continues.
The groundwork is in place. What follows is growth.

BUILDING BRIDGES AND BREAKING RECORDS
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & OUTREACH IN 2025
Hello friends, I’m Pragna Desai, and as I get ready for my fourth season as Director of Community Engagement & Outreach in 2026, I find myself in a rare moment of reflection. While I love the “chug” of daily momentum, the AGM report is my favourite chance to look at how far we’ve come – and how far we’re going. We aren’t just planning for next week; we are creating a vision for the next ten years.
2025: THE YEAR THE DOORS SWUNG WIDE
This past season wasn’t just “exciting” – it was foundational. We welcomed everyone from wideeyed children and curious academics to lifelong learners and returning friends. The energy was palpable, both on-site and across the digital divide.
EXPANDING OUR LANGUAGE AND OUR REACH
We broke new ground with our French-language programming . Thanks to the Shaw Guild volunteers, we launched French Backstage Tours that thrilled students and teachers alike. The best part? Whenever the sound of French drifted through the hallways, our Francophone company members would “pop out” of rehearsals to greet the children, turning a tour into a living, breathing cultural exchange.
Beyond the stage, our Theatre of Medicine program – in partnership with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons – exploded by 200% . We welcomed doctors from across Canada, residents from McMaster University, and even went international with participants from the UK. We even hosted the Canadian Navy , proving that the communication tools of the theatre are “mission-critical” for our armed forces.
THE MAGIC OF THE WARDROBE
When you stage a show as iconic as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , you don’t just watch it – you enter it. Participation in our family pre-show workshops jumped by 67% . Imagine scores of children parading from the Old Court House to the Festival Theatre, armed with kazoos, drums, and handmade masks, heralding their arrival like Narnian royalty. Thanks to the Martin Family and the Jeffrey Marshall Student Engagement Program, student participation was more accessible than ever, increasing by a remarkable 99% .
PIONEERING “POSITIVE AGING”
Canada’s senior population is expected to grow by 68% over the next two decades, and the Shaw is ready. This season, we piloted workshops in improv, dance, and voice training for seniors –skills that will “graduate” into a full program in 2026 with the opening of the Burton Centre for Lifelong Creativity . As a cornerstone of our $150 million All. Together. Now. Campaign, this centre will transform our campus into a global hub for curiosity.
We aren’t just teaching acting; we are researching the brain. Our partnership with the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI) and Baycrest culminated in our Defy Dementia event. We turned rehearsal halls into cognitive testing sites, shared “brain-healthy” snacks from our chef, and used improv to explore the intersection of live arts and wellness.
As we look toward 2026, our ties to the Niagara community and our national partners have never been stronger. We are fueled by our enthusiastic sponsors, our dedicated Boards, and the tireless Shaw Guild.
Next time you are on campus, please don’t be a stranger. Come find us at the Shaw Artists’ Village . Be brave, be curious, and discover everything we have to offer.
I’ll be looking out for you.
PRAGNA DESAI DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & OUTREACH
THE HIGHLIGHTS BY THE NUMBERS:
• A Digital Surge: Our online community is hungrier than ever. Participation in programs like Happy Hour and The Art of Ideas: Conversations skyrocketed by 54%, proving that distance is no barrier to the Shaw spirit.
• Inclusivity in Action: The most heartwarming victory was the explosive popularity of our Relaxed Performances. Attendance jumped by a staggering 294%, filling our spaces with a harmonious, welcoming spirit that truly defines what we do.

WILL SHAW ACHIEVE THIS VISION?
Experiences
Transforming The Shaw into a true Festival Theatre is a basic human need — stories shared in community. With your support, we will:
• Create new indoor and outdoor events that expand the festival experience
The Shaw must be a home for bold,
voices. With your support, we will:
• Launch a unique classical training program in North America
ALL. TOGETHER. NOW. THE SHAW’S CAMPAIGN FOR REAL HUMAN CONNECTION
• Rebuild and expand the Royal George Theatre into a fully accessible, world-class gathering space
There is an artist inside each of us. It is the essence of our shared humanity. But the world today has our heads down and our minds distracted. We are losing the ability to talk to each other, to look each other in the eye, to find solutions together.
we will raise $150 million from private, government partners to realize our vision for Campaign.
Campaign invests in four key areas, all supported campuses that will transform The Shaw next century.
• Design welcoming spaces for interaction before and after performances
• Encourage audiences to reawaken their own creativity through campus activities
We believe it’s time to change that. And that’s why in May 2025 we launched the most ambitious Campaign in the Shaw Festival’s history.
All. Together. Now.
This Campaign is transforming The Shaw into a buzzing campus of connection, creativity and curiosity. A home for all those who wish to put down their phones and remember that they are alive. A Campaign to create the new Shaw Artists’ Village and Burton Centre for Lifelong Creativity and to rebuild our iconic Royal George Theatre.
Community Bringing art to those who cannot come to us
• Train young artists to communicate complex ideas with beauty and clarity
• Build new classrooms and housing at the renovated Upper Canada Lodge site
It will retain its unique and much-loved character while aligning with our programming goals to create a modern, fully accessible jewel-box theatre that will be the first net zero and Rick Hansen Gold Certified performing arts centre in North America.
As a charity, The Shaw’s mission is to enrich all communities. With your support, we will:
A Campaign for Real Human Connection.
• Connect schools, care homes and community groups to our art
• Ensure every Niagara student experiences Shaw every year
• Employ artists full-time as creators, educators, and ambassadors
By the end of 2025 we have raised $115 million of our $150 million goal to achieve this bold vision. In 2026 we will continue our efforts to achieve this bold vision.
• Transform the property next door to our Festival Theatre (former Upper Canada Lodge) into a hub for community engagement, education, accommodation and personal development — which we call our Artists’ Village
• Create digital programs to help audiences everywhere rediscover their own creativity
• Provide state-of-the-art labs, studios, and workspaces
• Pioneer a new model of financial security for artists in North America
All. Together. Now. is focusing on four key areas: experiences, training, artists and community, supported by enhanced and expanded spaces at the Festival and Downtown Campuses.

THE EMBEDDED ARTISTS AND THE SLAIGHT FAMILY ACADEMY
The Embedded Artist program was already being considered when the events of the 2020 pandemic revealed just how necessary a program like this was to disrupt the precarity of some of the most vulnerable communities in the workforce – self-employed or gig workers, which includes artists. In 2021 the Shaw Festival launched its first wave of Embedded Artists – actors hired as full-time employees to not only practice their art on stage but to offer their expert skills to other parts of the organization. These artists created study guides, co-ordinated relaxed performances, and delivered classes and workshops as teaching artists, supporting the work of the education and outreach department, and in service of the Slaight Academy; performed for and met with government leaders in efforts to secure key funding for our continued growth; supported the development department in the nurturing and cultivation of the relationships, and in the creation of digital content to inspire the community to join in the All. Together. Now. Campaign.
They are the living embodiment of our great belief in the value of being trained as an Artist. Their grace, eloquence, and flexibility enriched every department they touched. They were also able to establish for themselves a new kind of security as they could leverage their full-time employment status with financial institutions, access health care and dental plans, and a host of services and systems normally out of reach to contract workers. As the first wave conclude their terms in 2025, we thank each artist for their generosity as they were foundational in the creation of this program, and it is upon their shoulders we welcome the second wave.
The Slaight Academy is the umbrella which captures our artists training and professional development, the Baillie Cohort, the Neil Munro Directing Internship, the Christopher Newton Interns, the Brock University DART Intern, the music department intern sponsored by the Metcalf Foundation and the Shaw Guild, and the Women in Musical Leadership Intern through Tapestry Orchestra.
The Slaight Academy begins one week before the commencement of the regular season with the Intensive. It is a week-long paid immersion for new and newer company members to learn about our practice at The Shaw and to focus on their craft before rehearsals begin. Foundational practices in text, rhetoric, voice, movement, music and dance are studied, led by senior artists in ensemble, in our greater community, and guest teaching artists.
These classes then continue through the season, anchored by the weekly TC Class, led by our artistic director, unifying the acting ensemble with a shared attack and curiosity of text. The artists enjoy the support of Jeffrey Simlett, the head of voice and dialect, and a roster of coaches who lead classes in singing, movement, Alexander technique and beyond. This past year we were honoured to have world-renowned singer and vocal coach James Oxley join the Academy for several weeks.
The Baillie Cohort of 2025 was an octet travelling through the 2025 season led by Embedded Artist Marla McLean. This program offers both group and individualized classes to these new and newer-to-Shaw ensemble artists, to not only reinforce and refine fundamentals but to also nurture the next generation of leading players.
Sponsored by the generosity of an anonymous donor, the Neil Munro Directing Internship ran for its 37th season. A program like no other, two emerging theatre directors were selected for a paid internship from mid-February to the end of September. The program is divided into two distinct, yet correlating halves. In the first half, the Intern Directors assist on two productions, introducing them to the ways and means of a repertory company and bringing them into the company as fullfledged participants. The second part of the program – the Directors Project – affords them the opportunity to bring to bear some of the techniques of directing and communication that they have observed as Interns. This season the playbill included Ghost Story written by Mark Ravenhill and directed by Allison McCaughey, and The Dumb Waiter written by Harold Pinter and directed by Kerry Ann Doherty.
Since 2011, a senior student from Brock University’s Department of Dramatic Arts has participated in a paid internship here at the Shaw Festival. Created with the interests of the selected student, the program can focus on performance, design, technical production, directing, arts management and education, experiencing the scope of the festival. This year’s student, Victoria Marshall, who was placed on Blues for an Alabama Sky shared: “This internship opened my eyes to so much and gave me unforgettable moments and lasting relationships. This has been an enriching experience, and I am looking forward to what the future holds for me.”
The Christopher Newton interns for 2025 were outstanding. Beyond his performances in Anything Goes and La Vie en Rose, Matt Alfano continued to shine brightly as a leading choreographer in Canada as the associate choreographer on the former – instrumental in the creation of the most memorable moments in the production, and as the choreographer of the latter. And Gabriella Sundar Singh continued to forge her path as a part of the next generation of leading ladies here at The Shaw in Major Barbara and Gnit, following in the footsteps of Mary Haney and Diana Donnelly.
Our gratitude and thanks to Marilyn and Charles Baillie through the Baillie Family Fund for Education for their support of the Baillie Cohort and Christopher Newton Interns and for all the donors who support training, education and outreach programs. – KIMBERLEY RAMPERSAD
SHAW ARTISTS’ VILLAGE
Our vision for an expanded Shaw Festival Campus moved significantly closer to realization with the addition of the Shaw Artists’ Village – a combination of outdoor and indoor spaces for performance, education, artist housing, theatre craft and personal development.
Acquired in December 2024, the Shaw Artists’ Village encompasses five existing buildings (formerly the Upper Canada Lodge) that are being transformed into classrooms, performance spaces and studios, as well as a new wardrobe construction shop and seasonal housing for Shaw artists and visiting school and university groups.
The re-imagined spaces have been designed by Unity Design Studio, led by architects Meika McCunn and Michael Gallant. Construction began in January 2025 in partnership with construction firm Govan Brown. The first phase of the renovation, including the artist housing wings and new wardrobe construction shop, will be completed in early 2026.
At the heart of the Artists’ Village is the Burton Centre for Lifelong Creativity, a unique space dedicated to awakening the inner artist in all of us, regardless of age. Opening in Spring 2026, it will house tailored programming and experiences to reconnect seniors, youth, businesses, tourists, teachers, physicians, artists, theatre lovers and local community members to their own creativity.
Our deepest thanks to the James A. Burton & Family Foundation for their support and belief that theatre reaches beyond performance. Their lead $5 million gift creates a centre that celebrates the art of human connection and positions The Shaw as a catalyst for renewal in community life.

BASIS OF PRESENTATION
The Theatre follows the deferral method of accounting for contributions. Externally restricted contributions are deferred when initially recognized in the accounts and recognized as revenue in the year in which the related expenses are incurred or the restriction is met. Unrestricted contributions are recognized as revenue when received or receivable if the amount to be received can be reasonably estimated and collection is reasonably assured.

SHAW
The Endowment Foundation was formed in 2003 under the chairmanship of Anthony R. Graham, a Past Chair of the Shaw Festival Theatre, Canada. It is a separately incorporated entity in Canada. The Foundation is a registered charitable organization and a public foundation whose objects are to receive, hold and maintain one (1) or more funds and to transfer from time to time all or part of the income therefrom and the capital thereof [unless endowed by the contributor] for the benefit of the Shaw Festival Theatre, Canada.
The Foundation’s funds are used for the long-term support of the Shaw Festival. During 2019 the investment committee of the foundation solicited proposals from 10 investment firms and chose to change portfolio management. The new fund managers are Fiera Capital Corporation and RP Investment Advisors. A portion of the accumulated net investment income provides The Shaw with a reliable source of revenue for operations,
and fosters initiatives such as new play development and education programs. As the endowment grows, it is becoming a significant source of revenue through both prudent investment and continuing contributions from donors who appreciate that a healthy endowment is a sign of fiscal responsibility.
Thanks to the generosity of many Shaw supporters and the Canadian Federal and Provincial endowment matching incentive programs, the Shaw Festival Endowment ended 2025 at $39.6 million. The Endowed Fund includes donor contributions, contributions from the Canadian Cultural Investment Fund of Heritage Canada, and contributions from the Ontario Arts Fund.
Gifts to the Endowment Foundation can be received from both Canadian and American donors.

THE ROYAL GEORGE
On Sunday, December 21, 2025, following a successful run of A Christmas Carol, the final curtain fell and we closed the Royal George Theatre as it currently exists.
Our beloved jewel box theatre on Queen Street has been owned by The Shaw since 1980. Originally intended as a temporary building for training and entertaining soldiers during World War I, the building has housed a vaudeville house, a movie theatre, the Brock Cinema, and the home of the Canadian Mime Theatre.
It has been a beloved fixture of the Shaw Festival for decades, but behind the curtain, the Royal George has not been without challenges. The ‘temporary’ nature of the original construction has meant flooding has increasingly been an issue, as the original foundation – made of clay speed tiles – has been eroding. In January 2025, we experienced a major flood that caused more than $500,000 in damage.
Long planned for and announced in 2024, the closing of the Royal George Theatre was a necessary step in the re-building process. Thanks to early support from lead donors and a critical announcement
in April 2025 by the Honourable Stan Cho, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming, that the province would invest $35 million to support the rebuild, our plans for a renewed Royal George Theatre accelerated.
We were beyond thrilled to announce that thanks to the vision and generosity of lead donors Tim and Frances Price, the Royal George Theatre will proudly retain its name as it is rebuilt and reimagined for the future.
Unity Design Studio, led by Meika McCunn and Michael Gallant, has spent this year designing and planning with the mandate to retain the Royal George’s unique character and create a theatre for the next century: a carbon neutral, fully accessible, Rick Hansen Foundation Gold Certified performing arts centre.
Shaped by feedback from the community and heritage experts, the design reflects the past but will serve modern needs today and for the future. The original theatre’s façade and illuminated entrance marquee will be re-interpreted, maintaining the scale, window openings, moulding and column

details. This ghost façade will be freestanding and connect to the new theatre entry through a small outdoor courtyard, covered by a continuing canopy illuminated with marquee lights.
Inside, the theatre’s intimate charm will be retained using a same colour palette, decorative molding and proscenium arch while adding accessible features like ramps, elevators, universal washrooms and automatic doors. The expanded lobbies and multipurpose spaces will allow for growing engagement opportunities with patrons and students, and the new rehearsal hall will ensure that artists have a well-equipped and safe environment to create magic. Backstage spaces will no longer be an afterthought. They will be fully accessible and serve the needs of the crew and artists.
We are grateful to our community leaders who stepped up to support us through the planning and permitting process. This necessary preparation has laid the groundwork for success as we move into the next phase of construction in 2026.

2025 DONORS
* Shaw Company/Ensemble Member + Board Alumni ++ Board Member
With ticket sales covering just over half of our expenses, and less than 5% of our annual budget from the government, the Shaw Festival simply would not exist without donor support. There is no commercial model for repertory theatre, so the Shaw Festival is more reliant than ever on the thousands and thousands of generous Canadian and American donors at all levels who support our work in our multiple theatres, across our communities and around the world, as well as safeguarding our future through gifts to our Endowment Foundation. Your help is greatly appreciated and definitely needed.
We are grateful to all our donors, and welcome gifts of any size – and every dollar helps to ensure more equitable access for everyone. While we cannot list everyone who contributed in 2025, we acknowledge here our most generous contributors and thank you all for your commitment to ensuring that The Shaw can be a place where everyone is welcome and can connect to the world and each other through art.
