1) How has Key Club had an impact on you? Key Club has had quite a lasting impact on my summer. Most essentially, I was able to reconnect with an old friend that I haven't spoken to for a prolonged period due to Covid and online school. Along with a noticeable increase in comfortability conversing with strangers, mainly those similar to my age. Lastly, participating in Key Club events such as the Tote Bag Painting, the Kehilat Food Pantry, as well as the Queens Botanical Garden Beautification Compost has introduced me to new areas and a taste of work fields I've never paid any attention to!

I would highly recommend others to join Key Club because of three main reasons. One includes the prospect of developing one's social skills through interacting with other club members, adults, and guides during an event. Secondly, upon acquiring the 40-hour requirement and receiving the Key Club certificate, you will be able to put the community service hours from volunteering onto your resume. Which will aid in increasing the chances of being accepted to colleges and occupations as compared to those with the same GPA or grades. Last but not least, joining and participating in Key Club will help the community heavily. Whether it would be lending out food in the pantry to those in need and help carry them to their cart or their vehicle. Aiding workers in the beautification of a Garden or cleaning parks of their litter.

"My favorite event is called BeanBeanBean. I can earn beans by answering questions it gives to me. And once I finish my goal of answering a certain amount of questions, I am able to donate all beans, which is so meaningful! I love doing this event because it's not hard to do it and doesn't need to spend too much time on it. I felt that it was interesting when I was doing it. I also got a sense of accomplishment when I saw the total amount of how many questions I got right."

ZIYI WANG "While there were many fun events over this service year, my favorite would have to be the Queens Botanical Garden Beautification! I’ve always loved nature and helping out at the garden was so fun. At first, I was a bit nervous as the work they had listed sounded very difficult, especially in the heat. However, when we got to the area it was very nice to see that the volunteering was something that everyone can do! Time flew as I was able to volunteer by beautifying the area in which composting will be held to reuse materials. It was a really amazing experience and I appreciate that they provided us with so much resources to use to clean up the garden! In addition to that, it was great to see lots of Key Clubbers volunteering! Lastly, I had so much fun biking there and traveling, as I haven’t been out much during quarantine! It was a great way to get exercise too. "

Members' Favorite Events "My favorite event was the Project Implicit Event. I say this because, for me personally, it was the most interesting. Specifically, Project Implicit offered me IAT tests to take on a variety of subjects, including race, sexuality, religion, and more. These IAT tests are designed to show people their implicit biases. Implicit bias is something that I have always been curious and eager to learn about because the concept discusses how everyone makes judgements based on their stereotypes and biases that they may not even be aware of. Project Implicit allowed me to learn new things about this topic, as well as how to test/evaluate implicit bias properly. I also really enjoyed having the opportunity to see my own preferences. Though I have preferences that I am aware of, Project Implicit had IAT tests about topics that I had never thought to have preferences for. For instance, on the Age IAT, my responses suggested that I have a moderate automatic preference for young people over old people. This surprised me because I thought I would have no preference for age. It then made me think about all the other biases I probably have but am unaware about. Therefore, Project Implicit was definitely my favorite event because it engaged me and taught me imperative information that I can reflect on."

BTHS X GOLDSTEIN X FLHS TOTE BAG PAINTING DAY "The event was very enjoyable and fun! I had so much fun painting the tote bags and making some new friends. It was also fun to see familiar faces from FLHS! The thing I enjoyed the most was probably the environment because it was really nice to see a bunch of kids from 3 schools all coming together to paint for Kamp Kiwanis. To add on, I loved seeing everyone’s tote bag and how much creativity they put into it as well as the event being held at Battery Park. The weather was perfect for painting. Overall, it was such a great fundraiser and I will definitely be attending the next one!" - Matthew Soto

KFAMILY PICNIC

"On August 8th, I attended the 11th annual K-Family picnic. The event started off with DPG Eric Paul giving a presentation about Kamp Kiwanis, a summer program for children ages 8 to 17 and people with special needs. He encouraged us to help support this program by donating money and/or books. After that, we got to hear governor’s Chloe and Chelsea talk about their district projects and how the K-Family can help. During the fellowship sessions we got the chance to participate in an amazing scavenger hunt and play multiple games to get to know each other. At the end of the event, to raise money for Kamp Kiwanis, participants were able to partake in an auction and watch district board members take condiment shots and get pied in the face. A grand total of $724 was raised for Kamp Kiwanis. Overall, this event was really fun, I’d even consider it to be one of my favorite events that I participated in this year! I really enjoyed all the games and learned a lot about Circle K." - Jenny Huang

August Social

"During the August social we watched two episodes of the anime called "The Disastrous Life of Saiki K" and talked about what we did over the summer. I enjoyed that we had an opportunity to talk about our summers and what we are looking forward to in the upcoming year." - Fatumata Dia
