Dear Valued Partners,
It’s been a big year and thanks to your support, we’ve been able to make a real difference!
At Keyano College, we believe in the power of education to change lives. This past year, our students awards program helped hundreds of students move forward with confidence, knowing someone believed in them.
We’re also proud to share that in the 2024–2025 academic year, we distributed $715,399 through 530 student awards. These awards eased financial stress, opened doors, and reminded our students that their community believes in them.
Your support has helped single parents stay in school, mature students reinvent their futures, and Indigenous students thrive in spaces that finally reflect and respect their identity.
Every dollar you’ve given has created real impact measured not just in financial aid, but in hope, confidence, and momentum. We’ve seen firsthand what happens when students feel seen, supported, and valued.
They rise and they bring their communities with them.
Thank you for investing in education and the future of our community. We’re excited for what’s ahead and look forward to continuing this journey together.
Sincerely,
Chantal Beaver Associate Vice President, Public Engagement Keyano College
In 2024, Keyano College was generously donated $200,000 from the Estate of Laurie Guthrie. With this endowment, Keyano College will have the opportunity to support female and Indigenous Trades Students enrolled in Welding, or Steamfitting/Pipefitting at Keyano College.
Laurie Earl Guthrie was an Alberta boy, master plumber/pipefitter, businessman and entrepreneur, family man, world traveller, and a man of charity.
Laurie started his plumber/pipefitter career at 18 in Edmonton. At 19, he found himself working in construction on large oil extraction projects north of Fort McMurray. At 23, he became a partner in a mechanical services company in Fort McMurray; at 31, he started his own company, Guthrie Mechanical Services Ltd. (GMS), which operated very successfully out of Fort McMurray for 45 years.
Very early in Laurie’s business career as the owner of GMS, he started making annual contributions to Keyano College. Throughout his career as a plumber/ pipefitter who had come up through the apprenticeship system and attended NAIT, he was always focused on the building trades; he knew first-hand how valuable a journeyman ticket was, especially in Alberta’s oil & gas business. Laurie never missed a chance to advise young people thinking about and planning their future career, with these words: “Don’t overlook the trades, once you have the ‘red seal’ of a trade, it is something you can use all of your life”. The number of young people from his circle of family, friends, and new employee hires from across Canada that he helped by jump-starting their careers with an apprenticeship position with GMS is too many to count.
Laurie made the world a better place while he was here, and an important part of his legacy is to continue providing grants and scholarships to student apprentices at Keyano College. He was also aware that Indigenous students from outside of Fort McMurray, wanting to get into the trade, needed extra assistance due to their travel and housing costs, and that more women needed to be encouraged to enter the trades. With this concern of his in mind, some of the scholarships are directed specifically to Indigenous and female students.
The Guthrie Family wishes the recipients of these awards ongoing success in your journey to get the highly coveted “red seal”. There could be nothing more gratifying to Laurie’s family and his memory than the knowledge that his legacy continues to assist others while they reach their trade school success.
Keyano College would like to formally thank Laurie and the rest of the Guthrie family for their generous contributions to our students. Your support will change many lives in the years to come.

Dear Marty and Dennine Giles,
I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for being chosen as the recipient of the Northstar Ford Lincoln Marty and Dennine Giles Award. I am truly honoured to receive this award, and I deeply appreciate the support and recognition it represents.
As a mom of two children (a 2-year-old and a 4-yearold) with a baby on the way, my nursing journey has been a family affair. It is only through the kindness and generosity of awards like this one that I have been able to continue my journey while raising a family. This award’s financial support will be invaluable as I strive to balance my responsibilities as a mother and a future nurse. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity it provides.
Once again, thank you for this incredible honour. It truly means the world to me, and I will carry this support with me as I continue my educational and professional journey.
Dear Apex Distribution Inc.,
I am sincerely grateful for the generous scholarship you have awarded me. Your support has made a significant impact on my educational journey, allowing me to focus on my studies and future goals without financial stress. This opportunity means so much to me, and I truly appreciate your commitment to investing in students like myself. Thank you for believing in my potential and for your generosity—I am honored to be a recipient of this scholarship.
To the generous sponsors CEDA,
I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for being selected as a recipient of the Student Advancement Award. Receiving this award is an incredible honor, and I am truly and deeply appreciative of the support and recognition as I continue my journey. My story has been full of ups and downs. I moved to Canada in 2016 and went to school in Ecole Mctavish High School from grade 7-12. Upon graduating, I moved out of my parent’s house to become independent and juggled jobs–sometimes two– to support myself while pursuing my studies in the licensed practical nursing(LPN) program. And although it was challenging, it taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. This award is very meaningful to me. It not only eases some of the financial burden but it’s also a boost to keep pushing forward. Your generosity has made me eager to finish my program and start helping people in healthcare and giving back to the community to make a positive impact. Thank you once again for this opportunity and for believing in me. I’ll carry this encouragement with me as I finish with my program and step into my career.
Dear Fore the Ladies Classic Female Empowerment Award Committee,
I am writing to you in gratitude for choosing me to receive the Fore the Ladies Classic Female Empowerment Award. Being selected for this award is a true honour, and I am sincerely grateful for your kindness and acknowledgement of my achievements.
It is beyond words how much this award means to me. It not only offers financial assistance for my educational pursuits but also acts as recognition for the commitment I have made to my studies and to giving back to our community. This award inspires me to keep aiming for excellence in anything I do.
Thank you for your dedication in helping students just like myself. Your generosity has truly impacted me, and I promise to use this award to further my studies and make a meaningful impact on my community.
I sincerely appreciate this amazing opportunity.
Dear Spartan Controls,
I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for being selected as the recipient of the Spartan Controls Indigenous Power Engineering award. It is truly an honor to be recognized for my efforts and achievements at Keyano College.
I am incredibly thankful for the opportunities. It motivates me to continue working hard and pursing excellence in my academic and personal goals.
Thank you again for your support. I will continue striving to make the most of this opportunity, and I look forward to successfully completing my program at Keyano.
To the incredible team at CNOOC,
I wanted to say how grateful I am for receiving this incredible award. Choosing this career was truly life changing, and I am now I am on a path of learning, growth, and eagerness as I start my journey. Thank you so much for this bursary, I’ve worked day and night to be successful during my time in the course, and now I am very blessed to be rewarded for it.
Dear IJ & Uche Ezeala,
I am truly honoured to be selected as the recipient of the IJ & Uche Ezeala award. I deeply appreciate this award. It will greatly assist me in my academic journey, and it motivates me to continue striving for excellence in my academics. I am thankful for your investment in students like me.
Thank you once again for your kindness.
Dear ATCO,
I am honored to be a recipient of the ATCO Energy & Environmental Technology Award. I sincerely appreciate your generosity and support in helping students like me pursue our education and career goals.
As an Environmental Technology student, this scholarship will greatly assist me in focusing on my studies and furthering my knowledge in land reclamation, GIS, and environmental monitoring. Your investment in my education motivates me to continue striving for excellence and to make a meaningful impact in the field.
Thank you once again for your generosity. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and look forward to applying my education to contribute positively to the industry and community.
To the scholarship donors of GPM Industrial Inc.,
I am incredibly honored to be the recipient of the GPM Lynda Oberg Community Involvement Aware. As a finalyear Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) student, this recognition is deeply meaningful to me, as community involvement has always been an integral part of my personal and professional journey.
Throughout my studies, I have been committed to serving my community in meaningful ways, whether through volunteer work, mentorship, or advocacy. Balancing academics, clinical placements, and community service has been both challenging and rewarding, and this award reinforces my belief in the power of giving back. Your generosity not only eases the financial pressures of my final year but also encourages me to continue making a positive impact, both as a student and in my future nursing career.
Indigenous Business Bursary Keenen Caribou
Dear Enbridge Pipelines Inc.,
I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for your award. Your support means more to me than words can fully convey, and I am truly honored to be a recipient of your generosity.
As an Indigenous student-athlete, balancing academics, athletics, and personal responsibilities can be challenging, and this financial assistance significantly eases my burdens. It allows me to focus more on my studies and my passion for basketball without the constant worry of financial strain. Beyond that, this support also means a great deal to me personally, as I am the legal guardian of my little cousin. Your contribution helps me continue to provide for them while pursuing my education and athletic goals. Both are things that are incredibly important to me.
This award is not just financial assistance; it is a reminder that there are people and organizations out there who believe in Indigenous students like myself. It is uplifting and inspiring to know that my hard work and aspirations are recognized and supported by my community. Your generosity motivates me to keep pushing forward and to one day give back in the same way, ensuring that future generations of Indigenous students receive the same encouragement and opportunities.
Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am truly grateful for your support and for everything you do to uplift Indigenous students.
Dear CNRL,
I am truly honoured to have received the Canadian Natural Environmental Technology Award. As a final year Environmental Technology student, this generous support makes a meaningful difference in my academic journey. It helps alleviate financial stress, enabling me to focus on my studies and career goals.
Beyond financial assistance, this award is a source of motivation, reminding and inspiring myself and my fellow students that hard work, dedication and a commitment to excellence will always be rewarded.
Thank you for your generosity and encouragement
