CAPSTONE PROJECT — SUENO

Immigrantion facilities at the U.S.-Mexico border are overcrowded and lack essential needs creating a humanitarian crisis. Many Latin American immigrants are leaving their home countries to escape political turmoil, an economic downturn, or high crime rates. With this increase of people, facilities are being overrun creating a deficiency of resources and health risks. There is a need to properly care for immigrants and make the immigration process manageable with temporary environments that are livable for individuals. 04

When basic needs are met and the space reflects an organized system to be created, processes will be streamlined, functionality increased, and human needs met. A service facility that provides medical care, legal consultation, and vocational classes and incorporates the design theories of Sense of Place, Interior Ecosystem, and Symbolic Interactionism, border facilities can provide a unique, human-centered transition place for belonging as they enter the U.S., and serve as a recognizable symbol utilized to inspire hope.

RESEARCH The project is located in McAllen, Texas since the state has the highest number of people that cross the border in comparison to other border states. The city of McAllen was chosen because it is a border checkpoint in the Rio-Grande valley which has the highest amount of crossings. Foliage in the interior connects users with nature and prevents a sense of confinment. Plants also help with mental health relieving stress. Climate is typically hot all year round, so proper air conditioning is necessary to keep users at the appropriate tempreature. Building is oriented to the south where sunlight is accessible at all parts of the building Water and sanitation is needed to keep users clean and provide the basic needs for living beings.

Medicine and vaccinations are vital for the program to protect the health of the community and prevent disease and fatal consequences.

MOBILE HOMELESS SHELTER — ELEVATE

Elevate redesigns a bus interior to serve makeovers to the homeless. The project helps them prepare for job interviews by providing outfit styling, haircut, and job-seeking services. The design draws inspirations from René Magritte and his series of paintings named The Empire of Light. The paintings utilize high contrast which relates to the before and after comparison of the makeovers given to those in need.

24

Magritte’s paintings were abstracted in the project into elevating bars and incorporated throughout the bus seen along the floor, walls and windows, and displays. The elevating bars symbolize the uplift of those without a home, while contrasting wood paneling and flooring is used. The displays are also set at different heights to utilize the design concept but also allow for accessible design.

ROBERT BRUCE THOMPSON — SLICE

This luminaire takes inspiration from fresh produce and uses the idea of cutting fruits into slices. The luminaire imitates the shape of a banana which is abstracted to become more modular and uniform to prepares the luminaire for mass-production. This design has two main discs that allow for two distributions of light. One is omnidirectional with a translucent recycled plastic which provides a soft glow for general ambient lighting, and the second disc is an angled direct luminaire that is used to highlight the produce. 32

The luminaire uses an electrified track rod system so that the two types of discs can be repeated or rearranged. The versatility allows for stores to have some customizability to their specific store layout.

EMERGENCY HOUSING

This project was created with a partner and is a creative excercise in designing a shelter that addresses natural disasters. The housing unit is made with reinforced fiberglass and focuses protection in the event of an ice age.

36

The design is derived from traditional igloos and incorporates a built-in water collection system that acts as funnels to provide essential drinking water and plumbing.
