A Note From Kevin Like the true Squiggle that I am, this is NOT FINISHED ….yet (or will it ever be?).

There are some letters in the Squiggle Alphabet to finish—or even start: But I put them in to remind me what needs doing!

I have added a special section (there will be others) on the amazing Squiggliness of the 2016 Chelsea Flower Show (under C) . I will be adding more artisan and trade stands when I get the pics.

The Fourth In The ‘Basic Shapes’ Trilogy - A Homage To Bruno Munari And My Inspiration For This Work

Bruno Munari (1907– 1998, Milan) was an Italian artist, designer, and inventor who contributed fundamentals to many fields of visual arts (painting, sculpture, film, industrial design, graphic design) in modernism, futurism, and concrete art, and in non-visual arts (literature, poetry) with his research on games, didactic method, movement, tactile learning, kinaesthetic learning, and creativity. During the 1940s and 1950s, Munari produced many objects for the Italian design industry, including light fixtures, ash trays, televisions, espresso machines, and toys among other objects. Three essays is ‘Design As Art’ Published separately—The Triangle. 2007. The Discovery of the Circle 1965. Discovery of the Square 1965 and latterly as one book. Authors Note : These works have been reviewed in SQUIGGLE in the context of an ‘update’ with the ‘squiggle’ shape in relation to the Three Basic Shapes. And ...not just Black and White for this book have I used., like Munari. Too constraining. Let there be color to add to (not detract from) the amazing world of the FOUR Basic Shapes.!!!

THE SQUIGGLE THE FOURTH IN THE BASIC DESIGNS TRILOGY Kevin Writes;

The Squiggle, compared to the geometric shapes of Square, Circle, Triangle is the ‘odd man out’ in design terms yet it’s impact on our lives is profound. It’s makes no appearance in Bruno Munari’s trilogy of the Square, Circle, Triangle. Why not? Was it because the Squiggle is a shape so totally unlike the Square, Circle and Triangle he didn’t see it as a ‘shape’; whose sides each contain and determine their (precise) geometric i.e. uniform appearance?

The Squiggle is totally unlike, or even the opposite of the Square, as Munari describes it…. ‘In the rock inscriptions of early man, it signifies the idea of enclosure, of home, of settlement’. Nor, like the Circle is it ‘related to the divine’ or ‘represented eternity as it has no beginning and no end’. Nor like the Triangle does it give ‘the overall formal balance to lots of works of pure art’.

Often it’s job is to create imbalance and chaos, confusion and consternation.

Each of the three shapes of Square, Circle, Triangle leaps out at us in every aspect of our lives and whose impact on art, design, architecture and culture are clearly demonstrated in Munari’s trilogy of the Square, Circle, Triangle. He called these the ’three basic forms’, And yet in nature, art, design and even architecture the Squiggle is as ‘basic’ a form as the other three.

The Squiggle is in the oldest writing going back to cave drawings. To quote the Bradshaw Foundation….

It goes as far back in our psyche as human beings to our very beginning of communication. It is as an important use as a means of expression as the Square, Circle and Triangle. Even more so today when we look to convey our thoughts and feelings in ’abstract’ art, as well as in design e.g. logos, packaging etc. Increasingly, architecture too espouses the shape of the Squiggle. Today we can now travel the Squiggle Road from Kandinsky to Kellogg's Special K logo, to the Gaudi Casa Batllo in Barcelona and go back to caveman and we see the power of the ‘fourth in the trilogy!’

Look for our Squiggle highlighting like this—The Squiggle in and of itself lets our imagination loose with its freeform design and random shape . It generates its own message which we can interpret how we like e .g. chaos, disorder, freedom, fun , sexy, silly, random (and a lot more) in the myriad of ways that it is manifest.

‘These 26 symbols in the paleolithic caves of France (including the Zig-Zag, Spiral and Serpentiform) appear in other parts of the world as well (as France) leading to the possibility that symbolic communication through geometric signs arose with early humans.’ The Squiggle is basic to our communication.

Whilst the Box, Circle and Triangle are found in 20% of the cave sites while the Squiggle shapes are found less, the Squiggle makes a comeback in writing in a big way later—even in drunken Chinese calligraphy!

Does the Squiggle impact our psyche in a BIG way? Look to this statement by the Victoria and Albert Museum on Art Deco—the epitome of Squiggle design .

‘It was the style of the flapper girl and the factory, the luxury ocean liner and the skyscraper, the fantasy world of Hollywood and the real world of the Harlem Renaissance .’

In order to even think of marking something as being yours, you have to have a lot of modern cognitive concepts.

You have to by self-aware as well as have a sense of personal identity.

This could lead you to want to keep certain prized possessions or particularly useful items to yourself, and one way to do that would be to use a specific series of personalized engraved markings.

Kevin Writes: And I just love it that it is The Squiggle - as a ZigZag pattern - of personal or tribal identity.

SPIRAL VARIATIONS ON A THEME OF FIBONACCI—See Opposite The original ‘Squiggle’ was here long before man. And the most amazing of all Squiggles (for me anyway) is—surprisingly– where the Box and the Squiggle meet: The Golden Spiral—or its variation called the Fibonacci.

DNA It's the simplicity of this structure that allows it to replicate.

Inside the cell there are bases which are not attached in a DNA molecule called free bases.

A DNA molecule can split in half. Each rung separates into its individual bases leaving 2 'half ladders'. The free bases will then attach to the half ladder creating 2 copies of the original DNA molecule .

GOLDEN SPIRAL—Wikipedia Link In geometry, a golden spiral is a logarithmic spiral whose growth factor is φ, the golden ratio. That is, a golden spiral gets wider (or further from its origin) by a factor of φ for every quarter turn it makes.

Different? Oh Yes!

Bruno Munari called the Square, Triangle and Circle the ‘Three Basic Shapes’. But we now know, think, believe, can imagine that even space-time, (see Golden Numbers) never mind the spiral galaxies, shells, flowers, logos or even DNA are based on the Squiggle. So maybe the Squiggle rules supreme?!

However, let’s compare the ABC of the ’Three Basic Shapes’ with the Squiggle where the ABC is….

A=Angles including his Triangle B= Boxes including Squares and Rectangles C= Curves including Spheres and Circles.

Here goes with the A= Angles Bruno Munari Writes: The equilateral triangle is one of the three basic forms, along with the circle and square. A full pattern of equilateral triangles touching on a surface creates a structured field (Ouch! Says Kevin the Squiggle—structure– eek!) in which endless (I like this word better!) other combinatorial forms my be constructed, as we can see in many Arab, Chinese, Persian and Japanese decorations.

Many styles of decorative art are based around (and constricted by—not like abstract art and the Squiggle) a triangular structure. Nowadays, many constructions are based on a triangular structure and the modules deriving form it.

Understanding every aspect and formal-structural possibility of this simple, basic form (but without understanding the freedom, depth and unconstrained power of the Squiggle) is a great help to a designer.

In the field of technical-artistic education, experimentation with triangular forms and structures (there’s that structure word again—eek and double eeeeeek!) is common practice in design schools. (And that’s great if, and only if, the education and experimentation is balanced with the freedom of understanding the Squiggle!)

The Greeks proposed the existence of five basic elements. Of these, four were the physical elements – Fire, Air, Water and Earth – of which the entire world is composed. Alchemists eventually associated four triangular symbols to represent these elements.

The fifth element, which goes by a variety of names, is more rarefied than the four physical elements. Some simply call it Spirit. Others call it Aether or Quintessence (literally "fifth element" in Latin).

In traditional Western occult theory, the elements are hierarchical - spirit, fire, air, water and earth – with the first elements being more spiritual and perfect and the last elements being more material and base. Some modern systems, such as Wicca, view the elements as equal. LINK

What Do YOU see?

Here’s what Karen sees—And Monet painted!!!

Karen Writes I love analysing the structure of paintings and did this a lot when I was younger as part of studying art and composition. It is something I take into consideration when I paint as well.

If you look at the Monet painting you will also notice that the girls’ head is at the top of a triangle formed by her body down arms to hands on counter top. This is emphasised by the red triangle posy at her neck with the apex directing you to look at her her face. And another triangle of intricate details is created by the lace, nape and face encompasses her face. The gold bottle tops on each side and her hair are another triangles to emphasise the colour of her crowning glory (gold is precious metal). The red triangles on the 2 beer bottles visible make another red triangle and the corners are 3 bottles of red wine, with a red base – same as the red posy and to make the posy stand out. Note the inverted triangles of the reflected chandeliers bringing the top down and balancing all the upward triangles coming from the bottom.

There is a double triangular diamond head to shoulders into waist, waist out to hips, emphasised by the dark dress (balanced by the block of dark tones in the refection). The diamond shape is emphasised by the posy with the green leaves to make the same shape. Her head is enclosed in a vesica piscis (a pointed oval) made by the black necklace and the darker tone over her head. The VP is a sacred shape symbolic of the female yoni and place of transformation. Her oval gold medallion balances this, connects the pretty flowers to her beautiful face and golden nature.

The guy in the reflection of the mirror behind her is looking directly at her face into her eyes (we are looking at her through his eyes), but if he was directly in front of her we wouldn’t see her face. The white circles on the pillars are connected by a line that joins all the eyes. Various pale and dark horizontal lines are in place to frame the main character in a number of ways, as are side horizontals (bottles and pillars). All of these arrangements are telling us where to look and what the whole centrepiece is.

Notice how important the single woman in white with an gold triangle bow is. If you cover her up the painting’s balance is ruined. She is part of a circle, the centre of which is the posy and the centre of the whole painting. She is also part of a mini triangle of 3 women in the background, the only ones you can distinguish with colour (the rest are a blur). They surround a cob?

Interestingly there is a ‘line’ down the middle of the painting (along the buttons, starting at top of the triangle in her jacket, through the posy up her nose and centre parting). Like ying-yang one side of the painting is dark and the other light.

A curved line comes from the guy’s eyes down the side, along the bottles’ tops, across the oranges, then flower arrangement, up to the posy, to her medallion and up to her face. The oranges are quite striking, contrasting with the purple tones behind them. I think they are there to lift her face and darker side as without them the whole piece loses vibrancy. They may be symbolic in some way (luscious fruit?).

B = Box (Squares) Versus S = Squiggles Different? Opposite!

Bruno Munari Wries: Enigmatic in its simplicity, in the monotonous repetition of four equal sides and four equal angles, (and Kevin replies…. in the Squiggles and Boxes ‘Personality Test’ - see IdeoPsychology- those who choose the Squiggles to describe themselves say—the world over—that Boxes are BORING! The Boxes in turn think Squiggles are ‘WACKY’ and that Boxy people are the ONLY reliable ones!) ….. it creates a series of

interesting (now it gets more fun!) figures; a whole group of harmonic rectangles, from the Hemidiagon to the Sixton (Really– never knew that!) and the logarithmic spiral found in nature in the organic growth of plants and animal parts. (Yep! That Golden Spiral again. The ‘Ultimate Squiggle built with Boxess—eeeek!)

It’s structural possibilities have helped artists and architects of all generations and styles by giving them a harmonic skeleton (and rigid visual straight jacket not released until Malevich and Kandinsky) to apply an artistic construction (now that is a really Boxy word).

In the Eastern Chin dynasty it gave the Chinese (but not the drunk Squiggles—see Calligraphy) a stable square form. According to an ancient Chinese saying, the infinite is a square without angles (sounds like a squiggle to me!)

The square is the finest expression of a spatial idea complete in itself. (And the Squiggle is diametrically opposite as it is never complete in form, or function as a reality or even more as an idea).

It represents an order (eeek—’order’ - such a Boxy word) of charged spiritual symbolism.

All other rectangles, with their different sides, derive form the square but relax its laws by expanding in height or width (while the Squiggle is never constrained or beholden to any ‘laws’ but that of its own making!)

"When, in the year 1913, in my desperate attempt to free art from the ballast of objectivity, I took refuge in the square form and exhibited a picture which consisted of nothing more than a black square on a white field, the critics and, along with them, the public sighed, "Everything which we loved is lost. We are in a desert . . . . Before us is nothing but a black square on a white background!" . . . . Even I was gripped by a kind of timidity bordering on fear when it came to leaving "the world of will and idea," in which I had lived and worked and in the reality of which I had believed. But a blissful sense of liberating nonobjectivity drew me forth into the "desert," where nothing is real except feeling . . . and so feeling became the substance of my life. This was no "empty square" which I had exhibited but rather the feeling of nonobjectivity. . . . Suprematism is the rediscovery of pure art that, in the course of time, had become obscured by the accumulation of "things" . . . . The black square on the white field was the first form in which nonobjective feeling came to be expressed . The square = feeling, the white field = the void beyond this feeling. Yet the general public saw in the nonobjectivity of the representation the demise of art and failed to grasp the evident fact that feeling had here assumed external form. The Suprematist square and the forms proceeding out of it can be likened to the primitive marks (symbols) of aboriginal man which represented, in their combination, not ornament, but a feeling of rhythm. Suprematism did not bring into being a new world of feeling but, rather, an altogether new and direct form of representation of the world of feeling. . . . Givenchy …..the square shape (with a touch of Squiggle ) is used to give a straightforward image, which is unusual as luxury brands are not exactly low-frill products.

The G is arranged to look like a spiral, which in this arrangement makes the square appear to be moving and swirling. This feeling of movement makes the brand appear to be constantly changing, a positive image. The Square Word Calligraphy system presented on this page and developed by Dr. David B. Kelley in 2012 is a new version of the original Square Word Calligraphy (英文方块字) system developed in 1994 by the Chinese artist, Xu Bing (徐冰).

Xu Bing attempted to fuse written English and written Chinese. He designed a system whereby English words are written in the format of a square, so as to resemble the consistent size of all Chinese characters.

Both Xu Bing's and David's versions initially appear indecipherable to English speakers; however, once they see the alphabet chart, they can read everything easily.

Bruno Munari Wries: While the Square is closely linked to man and his constructions (there’s that Boxy word again—eeek—to all Squiggles!)...to architecture, harmonious structures, writing, and so on, the Circle is related to the divine: a simple circle has, since ancient times, represented eternity, since it has no beginning and no end.

An ancient text says that God is a Circle whose centre is everywhere but whose circumference is nowhere. (But I bet He/She/It is a Squiggle—who/what else could have imagined all this???!)

The Circle is essentially unstable and dynamic, all rotary movements and impossible searches for perpetual motion derive form the Circle (like BB-8 in Star Wars— couldn’t help put that in, and the picture.)

The Circle is easy to find in nature, all you have to do is throw a stone in water. The Sphere appears spontaneously in soap bubbles. Trees grow in concentric circular pattern; a section shows its rings.

One of the oldest symbols is a disc made up of two dynamic equal and opposing parts: Yang-Yin, which represent the balance of opposing forces in all living things (yes, and separated by….you guessed it….a Squiggle .)

In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang (also yin-yang or yin yang, 陰陽 yīnyáng "dark—bright") describes how opposite or contrary forces are actually complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. The ensō symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and mu (the void). It is characterised by a minimalism born of Japanese aesthetics.

Drawing ensō is a disciplined-creative practice of Japanese ink painting—sumi-e . The tools and mechanics of drawing the ensō are the same as those used in traditional Japanese calligraphy: One uses a brush to apply ink to washi (a thin Japanese paper).

The circle may be open or closed. In the former case the circle is incomplete, allowing for movement and development as well as the perfection of all things. Zen practitioners relate the idea to (wabi sabi), the beauty of imperfection. Usually a person draws the ensō in one fluid, expressive stroke.[1] When drawn according to the sōsho style of Japanese calligraphy, the brushstroke is especially swift. Drawing ensō is a spiritual practice that one might perform as often as once per day.

This spiritual practice of drawing ensō or writing Japanese calligraphy for self-realization is called hitsuzendō . Ensō exemplifies the various dimensions of the Japanese wabi-sabi perspective and aehetic: Fukinsei (asymmetry, irregularity), kanso (simplicity), koko (basic; weathered), shizen (without pretense; natural), yugen (subtly profound grace), datsuzoku (freedom), and seijaku (tranquility). Not much gets accomplished if you don't. But there is a clear, and perhaps, disturbing trend which I have hereby dubbed Squiggletecture. There is an alarming number of renderings that have discarded straight lines.

What is a bridge? Isn't it just a vital mobility link from one side of a body of water to another? Isn't that really the baseline for every decent bridge in history? Look at a map of Paris or any other city with bridges. They are straight.

From one shore to the other. Providing no-nonsense A to B for the people using it. Only then do differences in design and aesthetics come into play.

Look at the selection of designs opposite. A2Bism had a cement block chained to its feet and it was thrown into the river. It's sleeping with the fishes.

You wonder who thinks stuff like this up. Are they all former interns at Foster + Partners? Wherever they cut their teeth on Photoshop, it is clear that these are people who do not ride bicycles in a city - or who didn't even bother trying before they started doodling a bicycle and pedestrian bridge. Let alone people who walk very much on their urban landscape. These are all designs for meandering tourists licking ice cream on a Sunday afternoon. People with nowhere to go and nowhere to be. These aren't designs for a city in constant motion and citizens moving purposely about.

The ramps. Seriously. Look at all those Squiggletecture ramps. Round and round we go, slowly descending to the river bank like a flower petal on a summer breeze . Not exactly what any human in a city wants, now is it?

Then look at some of those sharp turns on the bicycle ramps. Best Practice for grade and curves on bicycle infrastructure has been around for almost a century. Would it have hurt to spend a little while on Google? Or on a bicycle? Unbelievable.

Whatever. These designs would be great for a Bridge Over the River Why. London certainly doesn't need anymore of this.

Architecture The beautiful piece of land, with the Villa Schöngrün and the Schosshalde graveyard with the grave of Paul Klee in the immediate vicinity, seemed as though created for the construction of a museum which would accommodate the complete work of the Paul Klee Foundation.

The idea of combining nature and architecture in an exciting relationship to one another, met with the best premise here .

The idea

From the outset it was clear to Piano that the artist Paul Klee has «a too broad , too large breath », for him to be locked up into a «normal building».

For the vision of his own work Renzo Piano allowed himself to be inspired by the identity of the place, the gently curved line of the terrain.

The hills

Renzo Piano noticed that the hills in the foreground stand like scenery in front of the horizon of the wooded hills in the back ground.

The three hills blend as terrain contours with the ground and make the entire area into a lan scape sculpture .

Art Deco represented many things for many people. It was the style of the flapper girl and the factory, the luxury ocean liner and the skyscraper, the fantasy world of Hollywood and the real world of the Harlem Renaissance.

Art Deco affected all forms of design , from the fine and decorative arts to fashion , film, photography, transport and product design . It was modern and it was everywhere .

Built in 1936 by Guy Morgan and Partners, Florin Court (better known to Poirot fans as Whitehaven Mansions)

It drew on tradition and yet simultaneously celebrated the mechanised, modern world. Often deeply nationalistic, it quickly spread around the world, dominating the skylines of cities from New York to Shanghai. It embraced both handcraft and machine production, exclusive works of high art and new products in affordable materials.

Art Deco reflected the plurality of the contemporary world. Unlike its functionalist sibling, Modernism, it responded to the human need for pleasure and escape.

In celebrating the ephemeral , Art Deco succeeded in creating a mass style of permanence . Infinitely adaptable , it gave free reign to the imagination and celebrated the fantasies, fears and desires of people all over the world .

Art Deco, like its forerunner Art Nouveau, was an eclectic style and drew on many sources. Designers sought to infuse jaded traditions with new life and to create a modern style based on a revitalised decorative language. To do so, they borrowed from historic European styles, as well as from the pictorial inventions of contemporary Avant Garde art, the rich colours and exotic themes of the Ballets Russes, and the urban imagery of the machine age. They also drew on more distant and ancient cultures. The arts of Africa and East Asia provided rich sources of forms and materials. Archaeological discoveries fuelled a romantic fascination with early Egypt and Meso-America.

Its origins somewhat rooted in the British Arts and Crafts Movement of William Morris, Art Nouveau was popular across Europe and in the United States as well. Leading practitioners included Alphonse Mucha, Aubrey Beardsley, Gustav Klimt and the American glassmaker Louis Comfort Tiffany. Art Nouveau remained popular until around the time of World War I, and was ultimately replaced by the Art Deco style.

Mucha produced a flurry of paintings, posters, advertisements, and book illustrations, as well as designs for jewelry, carpets, wallpaper, and theatre sets in what was termed initially The Mucha Style but became known as Art Nouveau (French for "new art").

Metropolitan - Metro Entrance Paris The curious, inventive Guimard was also a precursor of industrial standardization, insofar as he wished to diffuse the new art on a large scale.

Mucha's works frequently featured beautiful young women in flowing, vaguely Neoclassical-looking robes, often surrounded by lush flowers which sometimes formed halos behind their heads. In contrast with contemporary poster makers he used pale pastel colors. LINK

Beardsley walked a line between fame and notoriety. His work was both admired and reviled.

Bauhaus was founded in Weimar in 1919 as a state-sponsored school of art, architecture, and design. Architect Walter Gropius served as its director until 1928. The school’s curriculum was organized on the principle that the crafts were united with the arts on an equal footing (as they had been in medieval times), on the guild system of workshop training under the tutelage of “masters,” and on the ideas concerning the relationship of art to society developed by the German industrial-design association Deutscher Werkbund, which was greatly influenced by the Arts and Crafts movements in England, Austria, and the Netherlands.

Kandinsky began teaching at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1922.

In 1923 he was given his first solo show in New York by the Société Anonyme, of which he became vice-president.

Lyonel Feininger, Alexej Jawlensky, Kandinsky, and Paul Klee made up the Blaue Vier (Blue Four) group, formed in 1924.

He moved with the Bauhaus to Dessau in 1925 and became a German citizen in 1928.

The Nazi government closed the Bauhaus in 1933 and later that year Kandinsky settled in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris; he acquired French citizenship in 1939.

Fifty-seven of his works were confiscated by the Nazis in the 1937 purge of “degenerate art.”

Kandinsky died on December 13, 1944, in Neuilly.

CHINESE…..Drunken Squiggles!

CHINESE Tsao ShuT he main feature of Tsao Shu is to simplify the left sidepiece (radical) of a character and focus on the right sidepiece (“Yi Zuo Yang Yu 抑 左 揚 右,” literally simplify the left and focus on the right.) Thus a calligraphy work in Tsao Style will look more smooth, connecting and faster with abrupt turning and dramatic effects.

The following is a chart that lists each character in Kai Style and three ways of writing that character in Tsao Style. Like Zuan Style, a character can be written in many ways in Tsao Style. LINK

In the Tang Dynasty, both Zhang Shui ( 張 旭 ) and Huai Shu ( 懷 素 ) liked to write calligraphy after getting drunk. They would yell, stride, and show weird behaviours during their creation. They were peered as “Crazy Zhang & Weird Monk 張 顛 狂 僧.” They established a Tsao Style commonly referred as Wild Cursive "Kwun Tsao 狂 草 ” (“Kwun” means crazy and bold.)

Zhang Chih (?-193) 張 芝He won the title ”King of Tsao Shu 草 聖.” He practiced calligraphy by a pond and it became black because he washed his brushes and ink plate there. He studied Zhang Tsao from Du Du and Tsui Yuan and then established the modern style of Tsao Shu. He had a great influence on Wang Hsi-Chih and Wang Hsiang-Chih.

The Together We Can garden concept combines Evelyn’s motto "Teach the World to Listen", with the vision of Papworth Trust to "Help us create a world where disabled people are seen for what they can do’".A water marimba generates the garden’s acoustic pulse, harnessing natural materials of the landscape – water, sun, wood, earth, and so the garden itself becomes a musical instrument.

The garden’s backdrop is a natural woodland copse of birch and hazel, strikingly interwoven with features that evoke the equipment of a recording studio. In the foreground, water cascades from the pool. Precisely sawn York stone set in

concentric radial patterns resemble sound waves transmitting towards the audience.

Green oak monoliths and solid benches sculpted to mimic the sinuous lines of the garden add to the acoustic pattern. Overall the form of the garden is reminiscent of the structure of the ear. Soft planting creates a diaphanous,

INTERACTIONAL SQUIGGLE DRAWINGS WITH CHILDREN AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE THERAPEUTIC CHANGE PROCESS INTRODUCTION

This paper is centered around a presentation of D.W.Winnicott’s squiggle game as I have come to use it in my work with children. In his book, Therapeutic Consultations in Child Psychiatry, Winnicott presented 20 clinical examples of what looks to be initially a simple drawing game.

He used the game in the first interview with a child and explained it as “one way of getting in contact” with children (Winnicott, 1971b, p. 3). Winnicott did not offer further prescriptive guidelines for its use, beyond his own comments, scattered throughout the text. Initially, I saw his game as a useful diagnostic tool and began to use it in that capacity.

As I began to actually play the squiggle game I became more and more aware of the drawing sequences. I realized that often the child’s drawings were a form of communication to me and often my drawings seemed to be a response to that communication. I then re-read Winnicott and realized that he had always conceived of his game as interactive, as a form of therapeutic “communication with children” (Winnicott, 1971b, p. 8). Looking at squiggles as somehow part of the therapeutic process in the first session with a child increased my interest in and my use of the game.

Winnicott also suggested that the drawings could be used to communicate something of the child to others, as in consultations with parents and teachers. He found that the drawings expressed the troubles of the child in a way that often could be usefully understood by the child’s parents. I began to show some of the drawings to parents, and was surprised that the parents often responded with little defensiveness and great understanding. They often added important historical detail to the situations and feelings expressed in the drawings. I began to wonder how these drawings were able to help so much in the communication process.

I also discovered that squiggles had their difficulties. I often did not understand their meanings and found the communicative process hard to follow. I occasionally found myself disturbed by my own images drawn during the game. I could not tell if my drawings were a further expression of the child’s difficulties or if they came from my own inner world. I could not always tell if my images were useful or harmful. I wondered if Winnicott had some sixth sense available to him, one that allowed him to be so confident in his playing of the squiggle game and so perceptive in his later understanding of its meaning to himself and to the child.

These questions prompted me to consider a more complete understanding of squiggles as the main task of this paper. As a preliminary step, I began to show sets of squiggles to more and more people, inviting responses to the drawings. Often the people perceived important meanings in the drawings, much as the parents had been able to do. As my sense of the meanings within the squiggles increased in this way, my own drawings became richer and fuller. The children also seemed to become more expressive and responsive.

At this time I had not yet attempted to think of the actual process of the squiggle game in any systematic way. Winnicott had presented it as clinical “play” and that definition was an important part of the game’s essence. I was concerned that looking at the game within any kind of therapeutic context other than that provided by Winnicott might spoil the sense of play and delight. I was afraid that they would become concretized within some therapeutic “system,” thereby losing their essential significance.

Without resolving this difficulty in my own mind, and as the next step in formulating this paper, I began to study, the sequential process of the drawings. Because I was interested in the interactional component of that process, I chose to begin my study within the interactional framework provided by Eugene Gendlin’s theories of personality change. I began to think that there was a great deal of overlap between the way Gendlin viewed the process of change and the way Winnicott viewed the process of squiggles. This was true in spite of vastly different therapeutic models and diverse therapeutic backgrounds. Winnicott developed his squiggles out of the frame provided by psychoanalytic theory and practice, while Gendlin developed his theories out of a Rogerian model of therapeutic interaction.

I discovered that looking at squiggles within the context of Gendlin’s experiential focusing model tended to broaden and deepen the significance of the drawings. This context allowed the underlying process of the squiggles to emerge from the sometimes confusing series of drawings. As this process became clearer to me, the drawings themselves gained additional meanings and new significance. The overall therapeutic importance of the squiggling process was more clearly revealed as the pattern of the therapeutic process was discovered and understood within the experiential context.

Examining the connections between Gendlin’s and Winnicott ‘s models also serves to establish more securely the essentially interactive core of Winnicott’s therapeutic model. The interactive process is often hidden by Winnicott’s use of static concepts to describe dynamic processes. When such concepts as “subjective” and “objective” objects are looked at from a process frame, their interactive meanings can be seen more clearly and explicitly.

In this paper I will present a specific formulation of the change process as it appears within the essentially visual motor mode of communication through squiggle drawings. I will discuss the phases of therapeutic change as they occur within the sequence of drawings and I will formulate an interactional model for those sequences. Placing the drawings within a step- by step verbal context will provide a set of words that can make the drawings more easily thought about and talked about. They can then be presented as a process that can he both taught and learned.

I will thus establish a theoretical context for the understanding of the squiggle game as part of the therapeutic change process. I will then take that understanding and demonstrate its usefulness within the context of a case study. This study will include a set of squiggles done during an initial interview with a child. I will use them to illustrate the phases of change as I presented them in earlier chapters. I will also consider, briefly, their diagnostic significance

Get Squiggling with Squiglet—BBC TV The show begins with a theme song. The lead character is a live-action anthropomorphic monster named Squiglet who talks directly to the audience.

The show teaches pre-school aged children how to draw, as well as basic colors and shapes.

The audience is encouraged to use drawing as a method of triggering imagination, and as a means to progress the story. (Kevin says—See Winnicott Squiggle Game) Each episode begins with him against a plain white background, which is gradually filled by the characters that he draws, like animals, objects, and landscapes, using his squiggle sticks and Squiggle Pad. There are six different curves (loopy, bumpy, round, wavy, zig-zag, curved) and a straight line that Squiglet uses to draw.

The main character is then animated by Squiglet saying, "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Let's make our squiggles come alive!" and they join the story. All other content in the show is animated based on his drawings.

If a character encounters a problem, Squiglet draws an object to help them. If a problem cannot be solved, the Squiggle Pad gives them a clue with a short, live-action video. Each episode closes with a song related to the episode, summing up the preceding story. LINK

Years ago I dropped a simple illustration into a proposal to convey the design process to a client. It was meant to illustrate the characteristics of the process we were to embark on, making it clear to them that it might be uncertain in the beginning, but in the end we’d focus on a single point of clarity. Birth of ‘Dazzle’ At the outbreak of World War I, navies struggled how to conceal their ships on the open seas. Painting vessels grey helped reduce visibility, but it was difficult to consistently blend with ever-changing environments and weather conditions. Prominent trails of smoke and wake also left ships vulnerable to being identified by enemies.

In 1917, the British Royal Navy pioneered the “Dazzle” camouflage paint scheme which often consisted of bold stripes and bright colors.

The patterns were not intended to hide the ship, but rather to disrupt the outline so that size, range, speed and heading would be difficult to determine – preventing the enemy from accurately targeting the vessel.

The United States was one of several nations to adopt the practice and experiment with different patterns through the end of World War II. “Dazzle” schemes largely faded from use because there was no clear evidence of their effectiveness, especially against technological advances in radar and rangefinders.

“Dazzle” was however credited with boosting morale of crews who took pride in the unique and intimidating appearance of their ship.

Education—Smart squiggles Children's early drawings can tell us a great deal about how they see the world. So why don't we encourage them more, wonders John Crace Guardia Article LINK Ken Baynes, visiting professor at Loughborough University, has made a study of how children draw, by recording their work on an interactive whiteboard. "It's a far more complex activity than it first appears," he says.

"Squiggles that seem to be random often have a pattern

and the cognitive value of mark-making has been much undervalued.

The fact that we can attribute a meaning to a mark is as important as making it, and drawing is a way for many children of modelling ideas. It would seem to be a simple, if obvious, strategy to make drawing a more important part of the primary curriculum than it is now, if for no other reason than maintaining a variety of learning options."

Beyond the academic and the intellectual, it is also possible to make a convincing case for drawing purely on the grounds of emotional fulfilment.

Whatever else it may be, art is a form of communication. Whether it's the working out of an idea or the depiction of family relationships, children are saying something about their understanding of their position in the world. And for some, it might be the only way they can say it. Which makes it all the more important that this means of communication should be kept open.

"Something sad often happens between the ages of four and eight," says Baynes. "They either decide that they can't draw, because they can't conform to the adult tyranny of representational art, or that they just don't like it because no one seems to value it. Either way, they lose all pleasure in drawing and stop doing it."

From Scribbling to Realism LINK As the child develops, their art passes through a number of stages. 4 of them were for the first time defined by E. Cooke, under influence of Herbert Spencer's evolutionary theory.

Presently, the stages are generally differentiated as follows: Scribbling From about their first birthday children achieve the fine motor control to handle a crayon. At first they scribble. The youngest child scribbles with a series of left and right motions, later up, down and then circular motions are added. The child appears to get considerable pleasure from watching the line or the colours appear. Often however children do not pay attention to the edges of the page and the lines go beyond the confines of the page. Children are often also interested in body painting and, given the opportunity, will draw on their hands or smear paint on their faces.

Later, from about their second birthday, controlled scribbling starts. Children produce patterns of simple shapes: circles, crosses and star-bursts. They also become interested in arrangement and can produce simple collages of coloured paper, or place stones in patterns. Once children have established controlled scribbling they begin to name their scribbles.

Pre-symbolism From about age three, the child begins to combine circles and lines to make simple figures. At first, people are drawn without a body and with arms emerging directly from the head. The eyes are often drawn large, filling up most of the face, and hands and feet are omitted. At this stage it may be impossible to identify the subject of the art without the child's help.

Later drawings from this stage show figures drawn floating in space and sized to reflect the child's view of their importance. Most children at this age are not concerned with producing a realistic picture.

Symbolism In this stage of a child's development, they create a vocabulary of images. Thus when a child draws a picture of a cat, they will always draw the same basic image, perhaps modified (this cat has stripes that one has dots, for example). This stage of drawing begins at around age five. The basic shapes are called symbols or schema.

Each child develops his/her own set of symbols, which are based on their understanding of what is being drawn rather than on observation. Each child's symbols are therefore unique to the child. By this age, most children develop a "person" symbol which has a properly defined head, trunk and limbs which are in some sort of rough proportion.

Before this stage the objects that child would draw would appear to float in space, but at about five to six years old the child introduces a base-

line with which to organize their space. This baseline is often a green line (representing grass) at the bottom of the paper. The figures stand on this line. Slightly older children may also add secondary baselines for background objects and a skyline to hold the sun and clouds.

It is at this stage that cultural influences become more important. Children not only draw from life, but also copy images in their surroundings.

They may draw copies of cartoons. Children also become more aware of the story-telling possibilities in a picture. The earliest understanding of a more realistic representation of space, such as using perspective, usually comes from copying.

Realism As children mature they begin to find their symbols limiting. They realize that their schema for a person is not flexible enough, and just doesn't look like the real thing. At this stage, which begins at nine or ten years old, the child will lend greater importance to whether the drawing looks like the object being drawn.

This can be a frustrating time for some children, as their aspirations outstrip their abilities and knowledge. Some children give up on drawing almost entirely. However others become skilled, and it is at this stage that formal artistic training can benefit the child most. The baseline is dropped and the child can learn to use rules such as perspective to organize space better. Story-telling also becomes more refined and children will start to use formal devices such as the comic strip.

Next I created a "squiggle" for my kinders to sing.

Usually, we start every class with a vocal warm-up that includes "painting" our sound with our fingers, following the sound of our vocal slides.

Because of this, the students we prepared to "draw" the sound of the squiggle as they sang its shape .

The Bauhaus Father of Colour and Design Teaching This page is for ‘design’. The next for ‘colour’.

Design and Form ...One of the landmarks of modern art education -- the famous Basic Course at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany -- written by the teacher who organized it at the invitation of Walter Gropius in 1919.

The Bauhaus and its leaders, among them Gropius Feininger, Itten, Muche, Schlemmer, Klee, Kandinsky and Moholoy-Nagy, have had a determining influence on the development of art and teaching .

(But like Bruno Munari with only T WO of the FOUR shapes in the Trilogy of Square Circle Triangle Squiggle on the cover. Yet wait until you get inside!)

The Basic Course was organized by Johannes Itten as a trial period to judge the students with varying educational backgrounds who arrived from all parts of the country. Its purpose was three-fold: to determine the creative talents of the students, to help them in their choice of a career, and to teach elementary design as a basis for future careers in the arts. After successfully completing the Basic Course, the students were taught crafts in the Bauhaus workshop and at the same time were trained as designers for future cooperation with industry.

Itten describes his methods for encouraging the student to highly individual and creative uses of light and dark, material and texture, rhythm, expressive and subjective form, and colour. Each of the plates has a detailed description which will help the reader to understand the purpose of art education. The wide range of original student works includes studies of nature, pure forms and abstractions, as well as three-dimensional works and projects in the applied arts. In addition there are some very exciting documents on the evolution of modern art education.

As a practical book for art educators today, DESIGN AND FORM far surpasses the many other sources of historical facts on the Bauhaus. It explains the Basic Course as a means for individual creative growth and can be used by all art teachers as a foundation for their own basic courses. In an article on the Bauhaus (Architectural Review, August, 1957) H. Von Erffa states: "Itten was our guiding spirit... the strongest personality at the Bauhaus…” The teaching methods that Itten used in those early days, and which were partly his invention, are now widely used in the United States…..(and the rest of the world!!) Pioneer of Psychological Profiling Creator the Basis for Myers Briggs Type Indicator The essence of Jung’s theory of psychological types is simple; when our minds are active and we are awake, we are alternating between taking in information and making decisions in our internal and external worlds. Kandinsky—Painter Teacher Pioneer of The Abstract (Squigggle!!)

When Kandinsky returned to his native Moscow after the outbreak of World War I, his expressive abstract style underwent changes that reflected the utopian artistic experiments of the Russian avant-garde.

The emphasis on geometric forms, promoted by artists such as Kazimir, Malevich, Aleksandr Rodchenko, and LiubSuprematism ov Popova in an effort to establish a universal aesthetic language, inspired Kandinsky to expand his own pictorial vocabulary.

Although he adopted some aspects of the geometrizing trends of and Constructivism—such as overlapping flat planes and clearly delineated shapes—his belief in the expressive content of abstract forms alienated him from the majority of his Russian colleagues, who championed more rational, systematizing principles. This conflict led him to return to Germany in 1921.

In the Black Square, executed two years later,

epitomizes Kandinsky’s synthesis of Russian avantgarde art and his own lyrical abstraction: the white trapezoid recalls Malevich’s Suprematist paintings, but the dynamic compositional elements, resembling clouds, mountains, sun, and a rainbow, still refer to the landscape. LINK Guggenhiem

But MUCH more important than that is the impact of the ‘Basic Shapes’ (all four of them—Square, Squiggle, Triangle, Circle) on why and how we make decisions.

Kahneman (to keep it simple—which I need!) has two core theories that (I believe) can be used to predict the critical impact of design on our decision making process.

1/ Prospect Theory—If we thing we are going to LOSE something e.g. When we are deciding on a product it may be a ‘special offer’; a ‘limited deal’; a ‘25% off for One Week Only’ etc. then that has a bigger impact than if we GAIN something. That’s why designers will focus on words that appeal to our ’Fast Thinking’ brain…..BUY NOW...OFFER ENDS SOON….. LIMITED EDITION ETC. 2/ What’s this got to do with ’design’ and the Basic Forms. Well, now we come to the ’Substitution’ theory which says that when we are in our ’Fast Thinking’ mode we ’substitute’ a difficult to answer question e.g What is the best fuel consumption? With a simple to answer question e.g. Do I love that colour or design of that (really cool) cart? YES! So, put these two together and the way that a/ the product is designed and b/ the way the marketing and promotional material is designed leads to the Prospect and Substitution to impact on our lives. By How much? I call it the 90-90-90 Rule.

The 90-90-90 Rule—90%+ of our decision making on a product is down to colour and design. We make those (fast) decisions on whether we like something in 90 Seconds or less. And 90% of the time users of the 60 Second Profile Test say ‘That’s SO Me!’ when making choices based on the Basic Shapes.

What is a Labyrinth?

(A Continuous Squiggle!)

A labyrinth is a single path or unicursal tool for personal, psychological and spiritual transformation. Labyrinths are thought to enhance right brain activity.

The Classical Seven Circuit Labyrinth—you enter a labyrinth through the mouth and then walk on the paths or circuits. The walls keep you on the path. The goal is in the center of the labyrinth. When you reach it, you have gone half the distance – you now need to turn around and walk back out.

How are they used? People walk the labyrinth for many reasons.

Chartres Labyrinth

Some do it to relax, some as a walking meditation, some just for fun.

Aren't they strictly some sort of New Age phenomenon? No. Labyrinths are ancient.

The labyrinth was a central feature in many of the European Roman Catholic churches in the middle ages and many of these still exist today.

The most famous of these remaining labyrinths is at Chartres Cathedral near Paris,France . The labyrinth at Chartres was built around 1200. It was walked as a pilgrimage and/or for repentance . As a pilgrimage , it was a journey to become closer to God .

When used for repentance, the pilgrims would walk on their knees.

Sometimes this eleven-circuit labyrinth would serve as a substitute for an actual pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

The cross is at the center of the pattern of the labyrinth and is used in the construction as a guide.

Even today, churches with labyrinths encourage people to walk the labyrinth during Lent and Advent.

Where did they come from originally?

Labyrinths have been found all over the world dating from the earliest antiquity. Their origins are lost in the mists of time .

Kevin Writes..ZIGGY … the name came from (it had to begin with Z) ZIGGY’S a shop he saw on the train and the STARDUST COWBOY. There was also possible reference/homage to IGGY POP and TWIGGY. The Z as a ZigZag appears time and again in his clothes and make up.

Bowie created Ziggy Stardust while in New York City promoting Hunky Dory and performed as him on a tour of the United Kingdom, Japan and North America.The album, and the character of Ziggy Stardust, was known for its glam rock influences and themes of sexual exploration and social commentary.

The Company Culture Cookbook (inspired by The River Café Cookbook) took me TWO Years!

Tougher to create an IdeoGraphic work than a (monochrome) 100,000 words—like The Employee Revolution and Emotional Capital.

Matching copy, pictures, concepts into a ‘Recipe Book’ was fun (and very expensive with a Design Agency) pre packages like this one I used (Microsoft Publisher)and instant publishing with fixed-format or ePub!!!

But now we can all Squiggle , and be Boxy too, and use colour and design with all our communication.

Kevin’s s Notes In Retrospect –In the original test (above) you just had to choose your personality ‘type’ without using words. On the 60 Second Profile Test on Apple and Android we added the words— thanks to our young friend Sam Bowden—and our ‘hit rate’ of getting people’s Myers Briggs MBTI went up from 75% to 90%+. But this was mainly because of the colour choices and aligned to eg sport teams. The amazing thing with the Squiggle v Box is that Squiggles just CANNOT relate to the Box shape and structure and rigidity and Boxes CANNOT relate to the loose, unstructured, chaotic shape of the SQUIGGLE!
