Take a Cruise and Sail the Bay. The waters of Moreton Bay offer the opportunity to beat the city
swirl and catch a breeze. All aboard a sunset sail and watch the sky light up with a rosy orange hue, or get amongst it on a fishing charter. Start living the dream – one wave at a time.
Spot Some Wildlife. Sit and watch who wants to be seen. Sometimes a dugong or a dolphin. Jump when the mackerel are running and wonder at a pelican in flight. They are all there, just be patient. Work up a Glow. Walk, Cycle or Jog along the foreshore, to the end of a jetty; along a boardwalk; to discover a diverse ecological maze of mangroves. If you need an excuse, get a dog and double down to a dog park. Just Move It…!
Meander the Markets. Weekends are made for grabbing a coffee and spending time with the many stall holders who want to sell you a carrot or a candle or whatever . Take the time to say G’day.
Let’s Do Lunch. Whatever you want, we have it. Cafés, restaurants, coffee or bubble tea, bare and naked or tarted up with cream. Once you have done lunch, why not stay for dinner, a drink and some live local music?
Pack a Picnic. There is so much green space for everyone to enjoy, so grab a sandwich, a sausage,
or some fish n chips. Let the kids splash at the Whale Park or gather under a gazebo to catch up with family and friends.
Shop Local and Share the Dream. Manly Harbour Village and Wynnum Central offer a modern collection of boutiques and homewares. Shop local for pots, plants, arts and crafts, all with the personal service that only local owners can offer.
Retro Shopping. Wynnum is renowned for its many preloved shops. You can be on the lookout for
a retro treasure, an Hawaiian Shirt, a race day hat or for anything you can think of. One person’s gift is your gain .. so start hunting.

The Manly Village Medical Centre, Dentist on Cambridge and Manly Harbour Village Pharmacy offer services for residents and visitors alike. Marvel at the yachts cruising over Moreton Bay with their colourful sails or thrill at the fast and furious Dragon Boats.
Tide on the Jetty opened on William Gunn Jetty at Manly in 2016. The overwater restaurant and bar, with its alfresco dining and unbeatable bay views, is owned and run by a group of Bayside friends. The experienced businesswomen and mums had a vision to transform the venue into a destination for both residents and visitors alike. Over the past four years it has become a staple of
the Manly community, where locals meet for coffee, meetings, long lunches and date nights. It also hosts an array of events, from gin and wine tastings to Melbourne Cup lunches and New Year’s Eve parties. With its views over Moreton Bay, modern dining space and extensive breakfast, lunch and dinner options, Tide on the Jetty is one of Manly’s premiere venues. Map for illustrative purposes

FRUITY MARKET IDEAS Head to the Jan Power Farmers Markets in Manly Harbour Village and get amongst the fresh fruit. The mangoes and stone fruit are especially ripe in summer, as are this seasons cherries. Think outside the box and toss together a Salsa to compliment prawns, leftover ham and turkey, as a zesty topper on some Straddie oysters or to add zing to Friday’s fish tacos. Finely dice a ripe mango - or if you prefer pineapple - add a peeled and chopped peach or stone fruit of choice (apricot, nectarine or plums go well). Finely dice a small red onion and as much chilli as you can stand. Toss together with roughly chopped coriander, a pinch of salt, a grind of black pepper, juice from a couple of limes and a small splash of extra virgin olive oil.
Summer is too hot to slave in the kitchen so have a go and play with the flavours till you get the taste you like. You cannot go wrong with this. Out of season, try pineapple and cucumber. Jan Power Farmers Markets are held 1st & 3rd Saturday at Little Bayside Park

MANLY GROWS... When James Warner surveyed this district in 1859, the entire area was covered with dense bushland and scrubby vegetation. On the foreshore there were swamps and mangroves. Most of the newly surveyed acreage lots were in the hands of investors and lay dormant for the next 20 years. In October 1882 David, James and John Arnold advertised the first sale of residential land, “Manly Beach”. Mary Street (now Stratton Terrace) was intended to be the main street of this new development with Mr Savage, a grocer and baker, opening the very first shop there in 1894. There were thirteen residents. The colony was in the midst of a severe depression.
Crutchfield’s Beach Kiosk
But the arrival of a new railway line in November 1889, connecting Brisbane with Cleveland and running through Wynnum and Manly, was the turning-point for future development. Land seekers, day trippers, campers, all streamed down the hill from the railway station along the present Cambridge Parade to reach the foreshore. Or they could choose to be transported from the station in Mr Richard Russell’s horse cab. Cambridge Parade was the natural route, connecting the station to the beach. Two further General Stores opened, opposite each other. Mr Curtis bought land in 1896 for his General Store and Tea Garden. Mr Russell built his Store and Assembly Hall around 1899. Campers arrived and set up tents, rented from Crutchfield’s Beach Kiosk. Here too, they could also purchase hot water and basic provisions. Holiday boarding houses were built. The Albert Hall was a short walk along the Esplanade and provided a venue for dances. Many Jetty Kiosk was built by 1899 with enclosed baths, the Jetty Kiosk and a dance hall. Mary Todd, a later owner of the Beach Kiosk, built a house on the corner of Mary Street and Cambridge Parade, in the hope of obtaining a Liquor Licence and opening the first hotel. In 1907, the population of Manly voted “No Thank You” and Manly remained dry until the 1950’s . Source: Wynnum Manly Historical Society Inc. | December 2020

Taste of Italy in Wynnum The flavours of Italy have grown with the expansion of the Bayside’s best gelato shop with the opening of ‘Matilda – The Art of Gelato’ on the corner of Florence Street and Bay Terrace.
Owners Rudi and Isabella pride themselves serving artisan Italian gelato, freshly made on the premises using the finest ingredients. “Quality is important” says Isabella adding “we are not like a ‘fast food’ ice cream outlet and choose carefully the shops to supply us, such as using Norco local milk and fresh fruit to bring out the natural fruit flavours.”
Rudi started his working life as a nurse in Italy. Whilst helping a friend in a local gelato shop, what started as a bit of a joke adding surplus fruit to the gelato, Rudi quickly became an expert. He arrived in 2012 in Australia to be with Isabella in Brisbane. When she fell pregnant they moved back to Italy for the birth of their first child….Matilda. Rudi took the year to learn the art of gelato making before their return to Australia.
They both thought opening an artisan gelato shop would go down well in Brisbane. Wanting to be close to the sea they fell in love with Wynnum with its seaside charm. As an added bonus it was near their home and work base in Carina and close to friends and family.
The original ‘Matilda’ shop – named after their daughter - opened in March 2018 in Edith Street. They saw the location as a busy CBD with medical centres, shops and post office plus kerbside parking. They quickly picked up a loyal following and became a regular haunt for parents with children post school or looking for a weekend treat.
The new Florence Street premises continues its uncommercial ambience featuring red (for food) and purple (for relaxing), giving it a European vibe that reflects its Italian heritage. It has allowed them to grow their existing business and be able to offer gelato into the evenings and weekends. How does their daughter Matilda feel about her name being so prominent? “She is very popular at Kindy and very happy to be the namesake of the gelato shop.” says Isabella.
They love Wynnum for its community, people and connection with regular customers. “It’s a small village with a seaside vibe” they both say and reminds them of their origins in North East Italy. And what’s the most popular gelato? “Chocolate, strawberry and cookies” Rudi quickly says, adding they have produced special flavours such as pumpkin gelato to tie in with the Wynnum Halloween Street Parade. They cover for all tastes and needs such as sorbet for vegan…gluten free…dairy free. “Gelato with every food” says Rudi. Ciao to that we can all agree!
WYNNUM REPUBLIC Where in the world is this country? It declared independence and set up a republic in 2014, and then announced an aristocracy where anyone could become an aristocrat if they paid for it (online, using PayPal). This small country then announced the appointment of a president, who was elected if they placed the highest bid in an online auction.
Although it’s small, its population is larger than four countries that have seats at the UN. And the final bit of good news – anyone can become a citizen by just applying online and it’s completely free – no lengthy application process, in fact all they need is your name, address, email address and a phone number. You simply apply online. That’s it. Citizens even get issued a passport. Where is this strange country, you may ask? Well you might already be living in it. It’s the Republic of Wynnum.

Property in 2020 and 2021
2020 ends a very different year than it began. It has been a year that nobody could have planned for - no individual, no business, no government. 2020 however turned out to be an overall stable year for property prices in Australia with prices nationally softening only slightly, despite the impact of a once-in-a-century pandemic. The real estate industry responded rapidly to the changing landscape and gave confidence to its customers as it continued providing sales and property management services. Depending on the type and location of the home, owners and investors sold property in good time, often without having to compromise on price and sometimes for well above reserve at auction. Indications are that there will be strong property market growth through the first quarter of 2021, and beyond, with Brisbane likely to be one of the forerunners. The RBA is saying it is unlikely to lift interest rates for up to three years. Home loan affordability is at its best level in possibly 18 years. With affordability, a diverse local economy and a high demand for quality property, there will be sustained growth through 2021, especially with interest rates approaching zero. House prices have rebounded after every recession or downturn in the past 50 years, including the early 1990s recession and the global financial crisis. Perhaps our appreciation for the true value of bricks and mortar as assets has heightened through 2020. We go into 2021 with positivism and confidence in a strong property market. Pair this with the local Wynnum/Manly community adding a wonderful mix of new restaurants, wine bars and cafes, along with the opening of the long awaited cinema complex in the first quarter of 2021, our local market is destined for continued growth. It is no wonder we are seeing such a large influx of buyers and renters to our area from inner city and interstate.
To discuss all your real estate needs, contact Tandi and Travis Gill of RE/MAX Advantage on 0422 804 419.

IT STILL FEELS LIKE HOME Even though I moved inner city, I travel to Wynnum every Sunday to visit my mother.
Pick up is at St Peters Anglican Church where she attends morning service, and we head to the mangrove boardwalk. Both mum and the dog enjoy the walk with the views always changing. I remember when the site was the local tip, my father would take us kids down for a ‘visit’.
Pandora’s Thrift Shop Pick up a bargain at this great pre-loved shop next to St Peters in Wynnum. This shop raises funds to ďŹ nancially support the Wynnum community as well as our ongoing outreach programs. Donations welcome.
Heading off for morning coffee we drive through Wynnum Central. Mum remembers all the old shops and is amazed with the transformation of the former Moreton Bay College site where she attended school, now a vibrant spot with Mr Hibachi and The Fat Duck opening. It is on our to do list, as is the new cinema. The drive is slow along the high street as mum likes to look in the shop windows. Lucky for me they are closed or we would never get coffee.
Mums’ favourite is Frenchies on the Terrace or a walk through Manly Creative Markets to Tide on the Jetty to enjoy breakfast with a view. On the way home, Matilda’s gelato is a must – lemon for her & something different for me. Special memories of a special place. Kathy Robertson
