Wynnum Profile Karen Bradfrod - Owner & Manager Sonny Jim, Wynnum

It was the thrill of selling adventure in the form of surf and snow gear and accessories everywhere from Perth to the Victorian snowfields that Karen established her love of retail. It is meeting and getting to know her customers - helping them find the perfect purchase that she enjoys most. Now Karen has brought her love of retail to Wynnum with the opening in mid 2021 of Sonny Jim. Located in Edith Street, it is part filling the void after the closure of DBS Mensland two years prior. However Karen has stepped up saying “Its more than menswear. We stock a wide range of product from unique designer clothing to leather goods, watches and skin care.” She adds with pride that all but a few of the 40

brands in store are Australian owned with a focus on environmental reach. Suppliers must demonstrate a thinking towards the earth, people and place. This covers even the skin care range with a botanical base. Branching out and opening her own store had been a vision of Karen’s for a few years. With the closure of Wynnum’s only menswear store and in the midst of the pandemic with a lot of people working from home and shopping local, Karen realised the potential and took the plunge. The overall look of the shop was inspired by Ralph Laurens ‘handsome’ interiors. Karen has added items sourced from backyard sheds to create a quirky look and feel to the store which is inviting and fun. The product range includes John Lennon labeled shirts and accessories creating a one stop shop for

all men and those wishing to buy gifts for the men in their lives. The store frontage has a slightly in cheek motto promoting itself for “The discerning fella…” which is exactly what you will find when stepping inside. And the name? “Sonny Jim is a mischievous fella inside every bloke. He is friendly, outgoing, and sociable.” Karen explains, “Many men were called that by their grandfathers. It’s a name many of us can relate to.” After years of travelling around Australia working in various retail outlets, Karen settled in Brisbane some 15 years ago with her children attending local schools. Son Jesse is co-managing along with modeling the latest looks and trends in various photoshoots. Karen loves the Wynnum community saying “Everyone has each other’s backs” adding she finds the local community

“Creative, Fresh and Motivated.” She sees a bright future for Wynnum with its unique community and Moreton Bay close by, adding to an ideal place to work and live.

Situated on Tingal Road just across from Barton’s car dealership and once billed as the ‘Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre for the Over Fifties’ the centre has always been a great space for live performance, with a polished wooden floor, a great stage area, a good backstage and a bar. All the requirements for a world class music venue.

Leisure Centre and instantly recognised its potential. Originally built in the 1970s as a community facility for the over fifties, the centre is now being reinvented as the Bayside Music Hall. Tom Oliver Productions launched its first concert in June with Thirsty Merc headlining the launch event. Subscribe for event updates at

When Tom Oliver – founder of the Wynnum Fringe festival – was hunting around for venues for the 2021 festival, he stumbled upon the Waterloo Bay WYNNUM PROFILE - STEVE RICKERTT Proprietor Tru Blu Trophies & Tape Convertors Music has been in Steve’s blood all his life, developing an interest from an early age. It saw him performing as DJ at The Wynnum Tavern in his teen years to providing sound equipment to many local and high profile events. Recently he has branched out providing local music supplies with the closure of his neighboring business, The Wynnum Music Centre. Steve continued his interest in music during his twenties working for BJ Sound Lighting in The Valley with servicing and sales for AV’s and sound systems for clubs across South East Queensland.

Steve, along with his wife Debbie, has run Tru Blu Trophies & Engraving since 2014. The pair invested in the business following time off due to Steve’s motorbike accident. Located on Bay Terrace, mid-way between Wynnum and Manly it has played an important role in the community. They added Tape Convertors to provide year round business and a valuable service to reclaim memories from old video tapes, cassettes and 8mm film. He sees both young and older customers come in wanting to preserve special memoires, some that often bring them to tears. Many come with stored precious memories of loved ones prior to their final farewells. Over the years Steve has branched out to service many smaller jobs both in business

and the community. He worked for 15 years at the Gold Coast Turf Club providing the sounds for races such as the Magic Millions. In 1994 he volunteered for the Gold Coast Indy and continued for several years managing track communications. He has fond memories of being on the grid with driving stars such as Max Pappas. Locally Steve has volunteered on many Manly Harbour Village events setting up Movies in the Park with Lota PCYC. He was also key in the operation of the famous Halloween Street Parade each October. Steve has been an Exectutive Executive member of the Manly Chamber for many years. In 2022 his volunteering work was recognised with a Scope Australia Day Award. A Manly West local for most of his life,

Steve loves the water and gets out on his jet ski for fishing whenever he can. He sees good future for the Bayside with Manly having huge tourism potential. With further investment in building he can see Wynnum CBD to thrive even more.

FAREWELL TONY, THE SMILING BANANA MAN A familiar smiling face has sold his last banana at the Jan Powers Farmers market. Tony from Crystal Creek Bananas said goodbye in June to early rises on Saturday mornings, and to move on to pastures new. A regular feature at farmers markets for nearly 25 years Tony has been growing bananas for some 35 years over the New South

Wales border in Mullumbimby, Terranora, Cobaki and Crystal Creek. Tony’s typical 6-7 day working week for a Saturday market is to harvest yellow bananas on a Wednesday and those green on Friday. It’s a 1.30am wake up call for the two-hour drive – in good weather - to Manly setting up by 4.30am in Little Bayside Park. Once the market finishes at noon he packs up and is hopefully back at Crystal Creek by 3pm. He’s up

picking bananas on Sunday ready for the City Farmers Markets where Debbie and his son have an even longer day to 6pm. Tony is looking forward to some well-earned lie ins and time to explore places with Debbie and to recover more from a farm accident in late 2021 that laid him low for several weeks.

Majestic Cinemas in Wynnum has a great season of special movie showings. Australian National Live Theatre is theatre filmed live for the big screen. July features Platee, a deliciously twisted comedy by one of the greatest French baroque composers about the irresistibly outlandish marsh nymph Platee being tricked into believing that Jupiter is in love and wants to marry her. August sees the screening of Diving for Pearls. This is a story about aspiration and reinvention set in Wollongong during the economic rationalism of the late ‘80s. Ursula Yovich stars as Barbara, a character as

significant in the history of Australian theatre as Willy Loman is in America’s. Art lovers will be literally drawn to the special screening of Canaletto & the Art of Venice, an immersive journey into the life and art of Venice’s famous view-painter. The remarkable group of over 200 paintings, drawings and prints on display offer unparalleled insight into the artistry of Canaletto and his contemporaries, and the city he became a master at capturing. Screenings details are available at www.majesticcinemas.com under the Special Events menu for Wynnum. “Tape Converters did a great job converting an old VCR tape from 1999 to DVD and USB - some priceless memories preserved - thank you.” - From Storyteller “My adult son was brought to tears by seeing childhood images that he thought were lost. We also discovered footage of grandparents which brought back happy memories.” - LR, Manly

BULKA BOOANGUN: CALLING THE DOLPHINS Initially built in 1884, Wynnum Jetty has been extensively rebuilt over the years. In 2005 the jetty got a makeover with the official opening of the Quandamooka Art Project. An initiative of the Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly and local Winnam Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Corporation, a public design competition was conducted to create a symbol of goodwill and mutual respect. Paul Songhust won with his design ‘Bulka Booangun: Calling the Dolphins’ which revolves around telling a story of place, people, time and tide.

It also recognises the traditional fishing practice of the local indigenous peoples with sculptures and in-ground artworks. The impressive jetty entrance is a timber and ceramic ‘totem’ sculpture made from three recycled hardwood pylons. “This sculpture reflects on a connection between land and sea, a connection with the senses, to the past, present and future, a connection to the processes of reconciliation, cooperation and sustainability and importantly an opportunity to open one’s mind for the journey ahead.” The totem is a nod to the original timber jetty but also identifies with the tall trees

which once grew in the area. It also represents the Quandamooka fishermen who would wade in the Bay waters to call the dolphins. Upon hearing the men clap their spears and slap the waters, the dolphins would herd the fish into gutters where rows of towrow nets were set to catch the fish. “This special way of fishing was celebrated in a corroboree called Bulka Booangun.” * Songhust’s design incorporates six inground ceramic panels which explore the concepts of “Flotsam and Jetsam,” “Time and Tide”, and the connection between land and sea. *Auntie Margaret Iselin and Uncle Keith Borey Minjerribah / Moorgumpin Elders
